Fresh out of college, I was working three jobs, while Paul “ Yashi” Lubitz, was the high energy guy that always had a ton of ideas for businesses he wanted to start but had never held a “real job” for any stretch of time. NOV/DEC2014

Who doesn’t remember PETA’s “I’d rather go naked than wear fur” ads? With the help of celebrities like Pamela Anderson and Christy Turlington, the horrors of the fur industry entered into the public conscience in the early 90’s and the sale of fur plummeted to an all time low. However, 2014 has seen a dramatic resurgence in the popularity of fur.

As temperatures have dropped, the prevalence of fur on the runway has skyrocketed. An estimated 70% of recent catwalk shows have featured fur. In addition to coats, vests, and hats, everything from fur-trimmed sunglasses to fox fur hairpieces were modeled in 2014 (1). However, it is not only designers like Alexdander McQueen and Tom Ford that are embracing fur like never before. Browse the websites of Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, or Bloomingdales, and the number of fur items for sale will require minutes of scrolling. Brands such as Intermix (by Gap) and Altuzarra (soon available at Target) are also embracing the current fur fad. There is no denying that fur is ubiquitous this season. The fur industry was worth an estimated 15 billion in 2011, a number that has been on this rise since the turn of the century (1). The lucrative fur industry confers great benefit to furriers, but what is the cost of this controversial fashion trend? Animals that suffer at the hand of the fur industry include foxes (red and arctic), rabbits, mink, ferrets, and raccoon dogs. An estimated 50 million animals are killed for fur every year (3). When rabbits (which are often used for meat) are included, this number easily exceeds one billion (1).

The number of animals killed annually for their fur is set to increase as the popularity of fur on the runways of New York City, Paris, and Milan have lead to increased demand in Asian Markets (2). In Dubai alone, there are now 400 shops dedicated to the sale of fur (2). The large majority of fur comes from China, a country with nonexistent animal welfare laws. Animals are stuffed into cages so small that they are forced to live on top of each other. Species that are housed separately live in cages only slightly larger than the animal itself. Arctic foxes on Finnish fur farms are kept in 31 square inch cages (1), only 4 inches greater than the average length of the animal itself. Animals on fur farms are afforded no protection from the elements and many have infections that go untreated. Beyond the abhorrent physical conditions in which these animals suffer, an estimated 85 percent develop behaviors consistent with extreme psychological trauma. These behaviors include rocking, head bobbing, self-mutilation, and even cannibalism (4). Furs that do not come from fur farms are no more humane. Wild animals trapped for their fur are caught in steel leg traps or in strangulation snares. Cont... 2014NOV/DEC | FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM  19

Foxes caught in the jaws of a steel leg trap have been known to attempt to chew off their own feet in an attempt to escape. Their only other option is to wait in pain and panic for someone to put an end to their lives (in a manner equally as barbaric as the method in which they were caught).

Additionally, millions of companion animals are also killed for fur each year. Such an act would be unheard of in Europe or America, but there are no Chinese laws that protect cats and dogs. Furriers capitalize on the fact that most consumers cannot tell the difference between the fur of a fox and that of a dog. In 2013, Marc Animals on fur farms endure Jacobs was caught selling dog extreme suffering in life, as fur. Early this year, stores well as in death. “Faux fur is a perfectly humane alternative to real fur, looks like the real thing, and is available at a fraction of the price.”

With or without fur, the catwalk is here to stay. Fashion is innovative, spontaneous, and inspirational, but must it be so cruel? Despite the popularity of fur in the current market, more and more consumers are questioning the ethics of slaughtering innumerable animals in the name of fashion. Does it matter that the animal is a fox, mink, or a dog? More and more, consumers are asking, is this a way to treat a life? These questions become even more relevant given the availability of fur alternatives. Faux fur is a perfectly humane alternative to real fur, looks like the real thing, and is available at a fraction of the price. Faux fur is widely available and there are plenty of guides to help customers shop compassionately.

www.humanesociety.org/issues/fur_fashion/tips/fur-free_shopping.html

The success of the fur industry is largely dependent on the blissful ignorance of the consumer. It is much easier to wear a fur coat when the immense suffering necessary to produce the item is never considered. Only once consumers are educated about the horrors of the fur industry, will the suffering end. It is high time to put the compassion back in fashion. 1) http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2582226/How-fur-industry-clawedway-Lavishing-gifts-celebs-Targeting-children-classroom-The-cynical-ploysmaking-fur-respectable-again.html 2) http://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2014/ mar/01/animal-campaigners-protest-fur-fashion 3) http://www.humanesociety.org/ issues/fur_fashion/?credit=web_id168075326 4) http://www.bornfreeusa.org/facts. php?p=372&more=1

Our Fall ‘14 collection is best described as Valley of the Dolls meets Reality Bites. We were influenced by a vintage 1960’s look. This is reflected in our A-line silhouette of the Alexander dress, black and white houndstooth pattern, exaggerated plaids, faux fur coat, ankle cropped track pant, flounced skirt, etc. To keep the collection modern and fresh we added an edgy feel with the burnout tees, flannel, 90’s baby doll floral, pinstripe and body con skirt silhouette. This balance of the two played well off of each other and combined seamlessly to create the perfect O&M collection for Fall 2014.

W

e packed our bags and headed for the mountains. We passed through the city on highway 70 to make our way up the mountain. We passed through Golden, Colorado and were amazed at the beauty all around us. There were fall leaves of many different colors. Faded greens, orange, red and yellow, to name a few, were nestled along the rolling hills of the Rocky Mountains. A little more than an hour after leaving the great city of Denver, we had arrived in the beautiful town of Vail, Colorado. We drove through the roundabouts and soon we were at our destination. Upon arrival, you feel as though you’ve driven into a different part of the world. The cobble stone roads and architecture that resembles that of 16th century Rome. When we pulled into the corridor of Antlers at Vail, two huge elk statues that sat in the middle of the roundabout welcomed us. We drove around the feature to find a place to park so that we could check in. Smiling faces greeted us upon entry. A few minutes later, we were all set to go. They had underground parking which are perfect for the winter months. We parked and took the elevator to our room.

The two-bedroom condo in which we would spend our two days was beyond perfect. They had all of the amenities to include washer, dryer, full kitchens and two full baths. The dinning area had oversized tables, which was provided plenty of seating. There were nearly ninety-degree floor to ceiling windows, which extended from the dinning room to the living room. There was a huge sliding door that opened to the balcony, which overlooked the pool. There were many aspen trees near the balcony. There crisp leaves rustled in the slight afternoon wind and offered a feeling of euphoria. I sat down for a moment to take it all in. It was a beautiful moment, and then it was back inside to finish unpacking. The master bedroom was beautiful featuring a king size bed and 42 inch mounted television.

THE

CONDO

Once we were done packing, we made our way into the living room where we sat in front of the fireplace to talk. We had 3 hours to kill before our dinner reservations and that was nice. We talked and played eye-spy with our four-year-old daughter who was also excited to be there. It was soon time for dinner so we made our way to Terra Bistro...

THE

DINING We were most excited for dinner at Terra Bistro, because 90% of the food served is organic. And if you’re big on eating organic foods, you know that those are difficult to find. They also have seasonal menus so you know that you’ll be able to try a new delectable dish almost every time. When we arrived, Robbie, the

manager, greeted us warmly with a big smile. We were promptly seated near a huge wood-burning fireplace, which set the mood for the evening. Our waitress, Marjean really knew the menu well and was able to suggest great meals and appetizers for my wife and daughter who are vegetarian/vegan. From appetizers to

desserts, we were extremely pleased. They presented us with dishes that we’d never before experienced. It was all displayed beautifully which made it even better. Afterwards, we thanked Marjean and Robbie for a great night of dinning and headed back to the condo for a good nights sleep. As the temperatures became warmer, we headed to spend a little time at the heated pool and hot tub. It was very relaxing just to sit back in the hot tub and look at the beautiful leaves and snow at the mountain peeks. Later we played games with our daughter

in the heated pool. We talked about hiking or biking on the mountain trails, but we opted for a day of relaxation instead. We went back to the condo for our daughter to take a quiet nap, and we sat in front of the fireplace in the living room where we had a couple hours of uninterrupted conversation. Soon it was 5:00 in the afternoon and we had a sitter to take our daughter for the evening. We were off to Vail village for a little shopping before dinner. If you’ve never visited Vail village, you definitely need to add it to your list of things to do. It’s more than a shopping

experience; it’s a life experience. After visiting many of the beautiful shops, we headed to Matsuhisa for dinner. This Japanese restaurant was a site for sore eyes. It was as if we walked out of Vail into New York City. This restaurant boasted 40 Ft. ceilings with floor to ceiling windows, which allow for a great view of the mountains as the sun began to set. We had the best seat is the house and we could ask for a better waiter than Austin Smith. He was just the waiter that we needed as the menu had a lot to offer. There were many other delicious items

not included on the menu. He was patient enough to walk us through all of them. We tried many different types of sushi; all of which I would rate as excellent. Cheers to a second great night of dining. Our daughter had a great night with the sitter because she was able to play with another kid her age and we enjoyed at great and relaxing night out. The next day we packed our bags and prepared ourselves to leave this beautiful peace of heaven. We didn’t want to leave, but we knew that we’d certainly be back. Antlers at Vail is now on our “A” list of places to visit.

Modern and Sustainable Children’s Fashion Collection Made from Milled Loden The children‘s fashion label HILDA. HENRI was founded in 2013 by fashion designer Verena Wondrak. Her modern sustainable couture is made from milled loden, an Alpine farming fabric in pure new wool, that is normally used for traditional costumes. Centerpieces of the collection for boys and girls are finely-crafted jackets, coats and capes. For her new collection Fall/Winter 2014 “Snow Mountain Fairy“ Verena was inspired by the romantic Czech folktales which enchanted children for generations with the extraordinary rise in fortune of a humble hero or heroine through winning out over daunting forces. Let Hilda.Henri charm us with their beautiful and fine collection for Fall/Winter 2014/15. Hilda.Henri speaks to everyone who aspires to live sustainably and at the same time has a sence for trendy and innovative fashion. “Outwardly expressing the search for that special something is important to trendconscious buyers, and that also includes the way they dress themselves and their children.” explains Verena her business aim. My target group should find the Hilda.Henri collection in selected retails next to attractive, individual and high quality products.

80  FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM |

NOV/DEC2014

Since September 2013 the collection is also available online. The designer is liberating the erstwhile Alpine farming fabric from the context of traditional costumes, breathing new life into it with her designs and giving it a fashionable focus. For the Fall/Winter 2014/15 designs Verena found her inspiration in Russian folklore, the last nomads of the north and Czech fairy tales. The result is a stylish and modern children’s collection for sizes from 1 up to 12 years. “The unique product characteristics of milled loden, as a natural material, are ideally suited for use in children’s and youth fashion,” says Verena, describing her favourite fabric. “Milled loden is light, breathable, water-repellent, temperature- balancing, warming and cooling, and adapts to the wearer’s body shape.” The designs are inspired by old handcraft traditions, magical places in nature, enchanted buildings and the magic of childhood. The collection includes dresses, skirts, trousers and knitwear. Various accessories complete the range. All parts are manufactured and processed in Austria.

The Fit Effect

with Briana Phillips

Indulging in Health

If fitness was your biggest indulgence how would you take each bite? Slow, steady and in pure enjoyment? Or would it be rushed, harsh, and unsatisfying? Or just simple, delicious, and straight to the point? There is so much satisfaction, comfort, and nourishment found in a daily routine designed around fitness. The act of planning out your fitness routine, showing up to the gym, doing the work, and acknowledging your disciplined action whether it was hard or easy can be a source of pure enjoyment. 90  FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM |

A well designed fitness routine has the benefits of bringing us real comfort and joy. Comfort comes from something we find familiar and something we can depend on. It can be a person, place, or thing that fills us up with peace of mind, and soothes the need of feeling embraced by something good. Joy can be the result of accomplishing an exercise or pushing yourself past your edge. It’s incredible that we have access to both of these powerful feelings just through creating momentum around daily exercise. It may not always be a pretty process, but it has the potential to move us beyond where we are. Do you need some positive movement, and a big dose of comfort and joy in your life? I know the answer, YES. We all need to indulge in something that conjures up good feelings and elimi-nates stress. Get ready because the holidays are coming up, and along with this festive time of year comes the joys and the struggles of the season. Most people struggle with maintaining a fitness routine within the busy bustle of holiday preparations. We get lost in the lure of pumpkin spice lattes, or pumpkin anything, and forget everything we have gained from exercising control of our goals. There is nothing wrong with seeking comfort around the holidays just NOV/DEC2014

don’t buy into the com-mercial, sweet, sugary, unhealthy influences thrown upon us this time of year. Sipping on pumpkin flavored anything might seem like what you need, but take a minute to stop and really ask yourself what you want and what you are really seeking. It is possible to fill yourself up with something warm and fuzzy, and it does not need to negotiate with your health and fitness rou-tine. My advice for making it through the holidays in a healthy way is to create your own spiced up perspective of what this time of year really means. We typically associate it with giving, renew-al, rebirth, celebration, and most of all comfort. What kind of activities can you do that enhance each of these feelings that are healthy and most of all non sugar related? Being fit and strong is a lifestyle that knows how to endure outside temptations, and maintain your fitness values while stile enjoying life. Instead of focusing on the stress of the season, giving in to temptations, and overeating your way to a list of all new New Years resolutions, be proactive about your healthy options. Indulge in a plan. Understand that you are the only one who can make up your mind to find acceptable alternatives to the things that lead us to making resolutions that should have been resolved a long time ago.

THE 1st STEP

If you want to be proactive, the first step is being prepared. Come up with a plan that you feel excited about. if you are not excited about it, the odds of you sticking to it through the holidays are very low. Up your odds, and try something new you have always wanted to do. Maybe ded-icate yourself to a month of unlimited hot yoga classes. If you are seeking something warm and fuzzy, hot yoga takes it up the next notch from warm to hot. Just bring some fuzzy socks to wear afterwards and you’ve got it covered!

THE 2nd STEP

once you have outlined your plan is to execute. It can be easy to put it all down on paper or in your head, but until you actually move, and make it happen the changes can’t take effect. This step is where commitment comes in. Even if you can commit to deciding to make your own organic pumpkin protein drinks vs buying a sugary drink that is one big step in the right direction. Most of us love to treat ourselves and order something special at our favorite coffee shops. If you want to order a sweet treat try healthier alternatives like simply substituting with almond milk, or eliminating the milk completely then

There are 310 Calories in a Grande Pumpkin Spice Latte!

If you want to order a sweet treat, try healthier alternatives like substituting with almond milk, then adding a small amount of agave nectar or honey and sprinkles of warm cinnamon.

Grande

adding a small amount of agave nectar or honey and sprinkles of warm cinnamon. There are lots of great non sugary teas to select from this time of year as well.

THE 3rd STEP

step is acknowledgement. This is the step where you acknowledge your highs and lows, your struggles and triumphs. If you don’t stop to acknowledge it all you will never know what you can do to improve. The beauty of this step is that this will lead you back to step one to begin again with new better ways of indulging in it all. Take it one day at a time. Indulge in the possibility of what you can change now. Hiring a per-sonal trainer who knows how to make an effective results oriented plan for you while motivating you to execute the plan is a great way to combine all three steps above. And who knows, you might unlock the secret to unleashing your best spiciest self!

Shrouded in mystery, purpose, and power, purple is a color rarely found in nature. It is so rare, in fact, that it’s possible that many of our ancient ancestors were unlikely to have ever seen the color purple. It is considered to be the ideal color, being a perfectly balanced combination between the warmest (red) and coolest (blue) colors of the spectrum. Red is generally considered dynamic and active while blue is calming and expansive, therefore purple is focused serenity, dynamic expansion, active calming. Purple (or Violet) is the highest color in the spiritual and radio wavelength spectrums. It is the color of good judgment and re-balancing your life. It is associated with the Crown Chakra (which links individual and universal energies), and is an excellent focus during meditation. Purple is the color most favored by artists.

BORN TO THE PURPLE Purple, as a dye, likely didn’t exist before 2000 BC. In fact, archaeological evidence suggests that the Minoan civilization in Crete may have been the first to use it around 1900 BC. Phoenicia (or what was also called Canaan) literally translates into “land of the purple” and was the center of the ancient purple dye industry. Text dating back to 1600 BC mention “Tyrian Purple” produced from the mucus of the hypobranchial gland of primarily Murex, a marine mollusk. It took approximately 12,000 shellfish to extract 1.5 grams of pure dye (Podhajny). It’s said that Herakles’ dog’s mouth was stained purple from eating the little snails after a visit to the Levantine coast and that was how he discovered they could be used for dye. He then made a garment for King Pheonix, who declared that the rulers of Phoenicia should wear purple as their symbol of royalty. From then on, the custom of purple being the color of kings spread through Rome, Egypt, and Persia because of its rarity and expense. You can find references to insect and snail based colors in the Old Testament, but with the decline of the Roman Empire came the decline of Tyrian Purple and large scale production ended with the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and was replaced with the less expensive dyes of lichen and madder (Podhajny). However, purple never lost its luster. Popes and Kings still favored it as a color of divine authority. In 1464, Pope Paul II introduced “Cardinal’s Purple”, which was really more of a scarlet and extracted

from the Kermes insect. However, as the years passed and the industrial revolution came along, synthetic dyes made it so that purple could be made available to the masses. The first anilinebased purple dye was actually found by William H. Perkin in 1856 while searching for a cure for malaria! But it was this discovery that made it very fashionable to wear clothing dyed “mauve” (named such for the actual dye name, mauveine) (Podhajny). Fortunately for us, purple comes in all shades for anyone to wear now! But genuine “Tyrian Purple”, which still exists, remains in the domain of the rich and famous. If you want to add some purple in your life, but aren’t sure you’re ready for a full outfit, try out a pair of deep purple ankle boots or tote to accessorize your outfit. Purple goes with most colors in the spectrum because it is both warm and cool. It can be worn with reds, blues, greens, yellows, browns, and oranges. And, because of its duality, choose the tone that works best with your coloring (more red or more blue) and go all in with a fabulous fall suit! And for a truly bold statement, purple lipstick or lip gloss looks good on almost any skin tone and violets shades of eyes shadow are perfect for bringing out the best in your eyes no matter what their color. In wearing purple you are encouraging fantasy, mystery, and imagination.

IF PURPLE IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR THEN…

• You are a visionary with high ambitions • You dislike being a part of the crowd • You are free spirit • You are good judge of character • You can be selfish and self-indulgent if you’re not careful as you don’t like having others beliefs and regulations imposed upon you

IF YOU DISLIKE THE COLOR PURPLE THEN…

• You are a realist • You live in the present • You may not be an artist, but you may like to be a critic • You prefer to conform to society’s ideals • You may find it difficult to express your creativity

The purple Mokara orchid, tropical and delicate, has lush, velvety petals and strikingly rich color that makes it especially captivating. Orchids represent beauty and love. Purple orchids, especially, symbolize love. The purple Mokara’s star-shaped allure is deepened by its color, traditionally associated with royalty and refinement in many cultures. - ehow.com

PURPLE IN YOUR HOME

Chandelier: apassionforhomes.wordpress.com

• Abundance • Calming/Soothing/Tranquility • Dignity • Exclusive/Expensive/Nobility • Intuition/Mystical/Spiritual

When you go with a lighter color such as lavender or lilac, the tone is very sensual and seductive, creating an intimate atmosphere. These are ideal to use in a bedroom or private sitting area. Darker purples, like plum or eggplant, evoke feelings of dignity, wealth, and nobility. Maroon even falls within this category. However, you will want to be careful how you use the darker colors as they can also create a sense of foreboding, loneliness, and even come across as pompous so make sure you keep a touch of whimsy in your overall design if you like these darker tones.

THE PROJECT

Amani ya Juu (“peace from above” in Swahili) is a sewing and training program for marginalized women in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and Liberia. Women at Amani are learning to work together through faith in God who provides a peace that transcends all cultural and ethnic differences. Amani portrays a unique picture of diversity, with women coming from Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Uganda, South Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Mozambique, and other African nations.Amani began in 1996 with four women sewing placemats together in Nairobi. Since then, Amani has grown to over 100 women representing ethnic groups and experiences from all across Africa. As women return to their homelands, they carry Amani with them. Amani has established a presence of peace in five African nations (Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Liberia, and Uganda) and two US cities (Washington, DC and Chattanooga, TN). Each Amani center is locally registered and independently managed with support from an international leadership team.

THE PURPOSE

Amani is committed to holistic development. Women gain experience in stitching, quality control, purchasing, bookkeeping, management and design. As new women enter the program they are mentored in quality workmanship with strong emphasis on ethical business practices and harmonious relationships with people of different backgrounds. Relationships built upon God’s peace transform even the most troubled lives.Amani women participate in singing, praying, and Bible study as part of daily activities. Visits to one another’s homes also help them care for one another. As women live out peace, they also pass it to their neighbors in need. The women 170  FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM |

extend Amani’s culture of peace by sharing resources with other Amani centers—mentoring new leaders, conducting skills training, and contributing toward start-up costs.

THE PRODUCTS

The ultimate products of Amani are women of peace. In the face of conflict and poverty, these women have regained stability and are sharing this gift of peace in their homes, communities and nations.Amani’s wide selection of high-quality handbags, home & kitchen décor, jewelry, and children’s items are made out of local African materials. Innovations by Amani trainees in stitching, tie-and-dye and batik result in uniquely designed products. The sale of products by volunteers and in Amani shops makes Amani financially self-sustaining and enables each woman a chance to earn a consistent income.Product sales also sustain the growth and development of the Amani centers. Over the years Amani ya Juu has sought creative ways to support the training program for the women who come through her gate. We often work with local artisans in the Nairobi Maasai Market in Kenya to supply Amani with home goods and jewelry accessories while promoting local creativity and talent. Each who supplies us with jewelry is a partner in Amani’s vision of using natural materials, all handcrafted, to compliment Amani’s line of beautiful products, and, each artisan is a partner in promoting peace and economic support in the lives of those beyond the gates of Amani. Individuals who work with Amani, from a refugee just learning to cut cloth for a coin purse to a skilled artisan at the Nairobi Maasai Market, are paid a livable wage that enables them not only to provide basic needs, but also adequate healthcare and education for their children. Amani also uses donations

NOV/DEC2014

to support specific outreach programs, such as Amani Watoto, the Elizabeth Sumwabe Scholarship Fund, emergency support, and infrastructure and facilities development. Amani ya Juu is a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation

OUR SYMBOL (above)

Africa often communicates her wisdom through symbols. This African motif, Nkyinkyimiie (twistings) from the Adinkra of Ghana, is used at Amani ya Juu to symbolize how God can make the crooked road straight. Throughout the journey of life there are many hardships and difficulties. It can often seem as if life is leading nowhere, wandering from place to place. But when the God of peace is discovered He makes the road straight giving purpose and meaning to life.
