Hello, TOPS Louisville Readers!

Our readers shared with us via social media the products and indulgences that make them feel like they are living in luxury. We put together a list of 12 of these items, Editor-in-Chief from self-care services to and Senior Advertising luxury cars, from sumpAccount Executive tuous bedding to fine wines and bourbons, and more! We have provided information on these luxuries and where to find them right here in Louisville. Sounds like a lovely escape for these quarantine days, right?

KATHY THUERBACH

For me, the greatest luxury of all is the luxury of time. Now there is a luxury that money can’t buy, yet provides a high return on your investment! If gifted with more time, how would you spend it? Would you share more time with family and friends? Perhaps plan that trip you have dreamt of all your life? I realize that now, more than ever, time is a real luxury we can all afford and enjoy. You can never have too much time! I encourage all of you to take time for yourselves, in whatever way makes you feel most gratified. Kick back with a cup of coffee and read TOPS. Get more exercise. Read the book you have meant to read for two years. Volunteer with a community organization. Spend time communing with nature. I find that time well-spent in pursuit of mental and physical rejuvenation is the most luxurious gift I can give myself. While luxury objects may fulfill your aspirations, the luxury of time can fulfill your inspirations. I hope you enjoy this month’s issue and all the luxuries that life has to offer, especially the luxury of time. All the best to you and yours,

Kathy Thuerbach

ancer doesn’t stop for a pandemic. Neither does Norton Cancer Institute’s mission to find a cure. Next week, beginner- to veteran-level cyclists will participate in an energetic fundraising effort that builds momentum year after year. It’s not too late to join Bike to Beat Cancer, benefiting Norton Cancer Institute, on Saturday, Sept. 12, and help fuel local cancer prevention and treatment. It’s the one-day cycling event that provides benefits that last a lifetime. In 12 years, the annual Bike to Beat Cancer has raised more than $4 million in support of Norton Cancer Institute; it raised over $539,000 in 2019 alone. These huge numbers are due not only to the merit of the cause, but to the success of the event that provides a fun, healthy challenge for both inexperienced riders and serious cyclists alike. For the health and safety of the riders, participants can complete their miles by riding at home, a park or a gym. In addition, riders can choose from four fully marked routes located in parks across Greater Louisville or complete a Family Ride From Home. This year, participants are able to choose their fundraising level to receive exciting incentives for reaching their goals. Another standout feature of this popular fundraiser is that riders are able to designate where the money they raise goes — choosing from options that include the Brain Tumor Center, Breast Health Program, patient financial assistance and even specific hospital locations. Of course, all participants receive a T-shirt or jersey, great exercise and the satisfaction of being part of a massive effort that supports a cause that touches every one of us. 

IF YOU GO:

Bike to Beat Cancer takes place on Saturday, Sept. 12. For more information or to register, visit BikeToBeatCancer.org or call (502) 629-8060.

Give For Good Louisville BY KATHIE STAMPS COURTESY PHOTOS

T

he 7th annual Give For Good Louisville, hosted by the Community Foundation of Louisville, is going to be a little different this year, because it’s completely virtual for the first time ever. CFL’s 24-hour online event is Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020. Think of it as very, very late on Wednesday night, because when the clock strikes midnight it will become Thursday the 17th.

20 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2020

Give For Good Louisville is a community-wide movement of good. The Community Foundation of Louisville is a force for good. Founded in 1984, CFL is one of the largest charitable foundations in Kentucky with over $600 million in assets and more than 1,800 charitable funds that have individual names and purposes. CFL’s Give For Good Louisville campaign began in 2014 and has raised over $26 million, with each year breaking the previous year’s record. “The 500-plus organizations that participate represent every sector and area of our community and they are the people working to make our community a great place to live, work and play,” said Molly Melia of CFL. “On top of all of that, the people that come together to make gifts during the giving day represent how amazing and resilient our community can be.”

Molly is the senior associate of marketing and communications for CFL. She is also the project lead on Give For Good Louisville. She said that yes, you should always support organizations year-round, but doing so on Sept. 17 is extra special. An extra $300,000 worth of special. Every year, community partners support a prize pool. In 2020, the $300,000 prize pool means the nonprofits can win cash prizes, based on different challenges and randomly selected donor gifts, throughout the day. So your donations on Sept. 17 are putting more money directly in the hands of the nonprofits. Which nonprofit? You can search by geographic location or by cause, allowing you to find a nonprofit or two that aligns with your passions. “Through Give For Good Louisville, we aim

Passion for Future

to make philanthropy more accessible for everyone,” Molly said. This year's goal is to increase the number of donors and donations. The minimum online gift is $10 and the max is entirely up to your heart and wallet’s capacity. Gifts can be made by credit card, mobile pay options or by direct bank/ACH transfer, and by anyone in the world. The digital platform makes this year’s Give For Good Louisville campaign more important than ever, because many organizations have lost out on in-person fundraising events, and because “our nonprofit community has stepped up to take care of our city during the pandemic,” Molly said. “This year has been a tough year on communities around the world, and that means that the rallying together of our city in September will just go to show the generosity and power we have when we all come together.” 

Scott’s grandfather opened the plumbing supply house before Scott was born. “I’ve worked here since high school, almost 20 years,” Scott says, “and I’ve been here the least amount of time.” Some of the employees have been at East End for 30 to 40 years. “You’re not talking to a guy who just filled out an application to work here. We know the products and can coach you through the process.”

omeowners and fixer-uppers have remodeled their kitchens and baths with products from East End Plumbing Supply for almost five decades. The local family-owned plumbing supply house has served Louisville since 1973. The showroom in East Louisville looks brand new and that’s because it is. It’s bigger too. A complete remodel in 2020 meant a new ceiling and walls, a metallic epoxied flooring that makes it look like you’re walking on the ocean, and a very cool new front door. “The western

cedar portico entrance looks like you’re walking into a lodge out west,” says Scott Jackson, president of the company. There are new professional-grade products in the showroom from manufacturers like American Standard, Brizo, Delta, DXV and Moen. “The things you see at the big-box stores, you’re not going to find here,” Scott says. “We pride ourselves that no matter what your budget, we're going to find you what you need for your project.”

IF YOU GO:

East End Plumbing Supply has a new showroom at 1705 Research Drive which can be reached at (502) 491-4070. A second location in Shively (4901 Dixie Highway) can be reached at (502) 477-3374. Visit eastendplumbing.com for more information. Shop Monday through Friday 7:30am-4:30pm.

lustery fall weather can be drying for the skin, causing the face to appear dull and lifeless. How can you keep the glow up going as the colder months approach? Book an appointment for dermaplaning, follow it up with a moisturizing facial, and let that youthful radiance shine on.

Dr. Juan Quintero’s plastic surgery practice in St. Matthews, JQ Plastics, performs dermaplaning and HydraFacial® treatments. Dermaplaning is a favorite of Medical Aestheticians Danielle Overton and Brittany Wesson to brighten the skin and improve the performance of skincare and makeup. The cell turnover provided through dermaplaning is key to combating dullness. The patented Vortex-Fusion technology of the HydraFacial®’s machine and treatment uses three steps: cleanse and peel, extract and hydrate, fuse and protect. According to the HydraFacial website, “The spiral design of the HydraPeel® Tips, used in conjunction with the HydraFacial® proprietary vacuum technology and serums, creates a vortex effect to easily dislodge and remove impurities while simultaneously delivering hydrating skin solutions.” Danielle often performs dermaplaning and HydraFacial® in the same appointment. “People just love the two together,” she says because dermaplaning increases the effectiveness of the HydraFacial®. These treatments are perfect for special occasions such as holidays, weddings, and reunions. Benefits of dermaplaning are better skincare penetration and makeup application, removal of facial hair that traps dirt and oil, smoother skin, removal of dead skin cells, reduction in the appearance of scarring, diminishment of fine lines, and instant results for all skin types with no downtime. The treatment is generally recommended every three to four weeks. Some benefits of HydraFacial® are hydration and nourishment on a deeper level, collagen stimulation, smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles, skin resurfacing, pore minimization, and reduction of brown spots and hyper-pigmentation. BEDDED BLISS LINENS

ith the stress levels of 2020, we could all use a soft place to land at night. Restful, restorative sleep helps reduce anxiety and boosts the immune system. Bedded Bliss in Chenoweth Square has silky pajamas, plush robes, and luxury linens to wrap you up like royalty. Owner Donna Osif developed her exquisite taste at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, NYC. For twenty years, she was a clothing buyer traveling extensively through Southeast Asia, until she was lured to Louisville by the owners of The Fashion Shop. Donna opened her boutique in 1997 as a gift shop with just two bed displays. Customers were so drawn to the lovely linens, particularly mattelassé coverlets, that Donna realized this was her niche. Today’s Bedded Bliss customers are most interested in simple, elegant coverlets. Duvet covers can be a hassle to take off for washing and then put back on. Heavy quilts can be too hot for quality sleep. “The trend continues to grow for lightweight, easy-care coverlets in solid colors with textured fabrics in quilts, mattelassés, and luxurious silk/cotton blends. The most beautiful way to accent the coverlets is with luxurious embroideries from Italy that complement other fabrics in the room.” The best examples come from Donna’s best-selling Matouk® line. With many boutique owners unwilling to travel to Atlanta Market this year, vendors are hitting the road instead. They say color is making a comeback in the world of home goods and linens, especially shades of green. Velvet is also seeing a resurgence in popularity for the coming fall and winter months. Bedded Bliss carries a selection of incredibly soft cotton knit pajamas and silky satin ones from PJ Harlow. Fluffy chenille and lightweight cotton robes come in a variety of textures and colors. CARS AND MOTORCYCLES ROLLING STOCK SPECIALTY AUTO SALES

W

hether you are looking for that specialty auto of your dreams or rewarding yourself with an almost-like-new pristine daily driver, Cary Donovan at Rolling Stock can steer you to the ride of your life. After more than twenty-five years with the Sam Swope Auto Group, he learned what people disliked about buying a car, and knew exactly how that experience should be improved. Conventional car buying involves high-pressure sales, dealing with a salesperson and a sales manager, then waiting in queue for the finance officer. To "get past those pain points," Cary's customers receive individual, personal attention by appointment only. He is their trusted advisor, rather than a salesman. Whether you are buying or selling a vehicle, there is no pressure at Rolling Stock. This is a retirement hobby for Cary. "I do this for fun." He is living proof that "if you do something you love, you'll never work another day in your life.” Rolling Stock opened about three years ago, and the business has grown in sales and repeat customers. With a little help from the

internet, Cary has sold luxury automobiles and motorcycles to customers in 45 states. Louisville-area customers are fortunate to be much closer to the one-of-a-kind experience at Rolling Stock. There you will find vehicles for everyday dependability parked among the bling and performance automotive genius. Cary comments, "These vehicles are like my foster children." He wants the customer driving one home to "be an even better parent than I am."

PERFUMES

AMERICAN PERFUMER®

B

espoke perfume can cost thousands of dollars. For a luxury perfumery experience at a slightly more reasonable cost, American Perfumer® is the first retailer in the US to focus exclusively on American artisan perfume. Dave Kern started the business in August 2018. He is originally from Massachusetts and followed his wife to Louisville in 1995. After many years in nonprofit and for-profit businesses, including a successful commercial real estate career, Dave followed his nose to pursue a lifelong passion for scents. As a lover of food, wine, and whiskey, especially appreciating the olfactory experience involved, the pivot to perfumes felt quite natural.

There are a plethora of options for purchasing fragrance. Other points of sale involve salespeople often working on commission, but with

30 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2020

Cary's policy is to be upfront and transparent about the vehicle’s pricing and condition. The website has extensive descriptions and photos of all inventory, links to CARFAX reports, Kelly Blue Book, and a trade-in value request form. The fun, ever-changing inventory in late August included a Ferrari Spider, Mercedes-Benzes, Porsches, a Jaguar, a Land Rover, a Ducati Superbike, Harley-Davidsons, a Polaris Slingshot, and many more. limited product knowledge. Dave knows perfume and artisans’ intentions inside out. He recommends Five Perfumes to Wear Right Now: 1.

LA PETITE PRAIRIE BY SHAWN MAHER (CHATILLON LUX - ST. LOUIS) “Herbal,

juicy citrus and tart rhubarb threaded by a cool-spiced-floral accord to woody, earthy vetiver. Instant classic.”

2.

IDYLLWILD BY INEKE RUHLAND (INEKLE PERFUMES - SAN FRANCISCO) “Idyllwild

smartly updates the classic lavender-citrus Fougere with bright grapefruit, sticky pine, and gently smoky oud.” 3.

TUBEREUSE ORGANIQUE BY CHRISTOPHE LAUDAMIEL (THE ZOO - NEW YORK)

Tuberose deconstructed and reconstituted as a clever accord of lavender and agave bridged by jasmine to herbaceous and green angelica, marigold and moss. Brilliantly, comprehensively fresh.”

4.

HONEYSUCKLE BIRD BY LIZ ZORN (SOIVOHLE - CINCINNATI) “Nectarous,

honeyed florals and oakmoss underpinned by earthy amber and warm musk. Sweet comfort.” 5.

MOUSSE ILLUMINEE BY MANUEL CROSS (ROGUE PERFUMERY - LOS ANGELES) “A full range of deep greens

- at turns grassy, herbal, coniferous and resinous - the forest in all of its reverie-inducing glory.”

“Our perfumes are as good as any in the world,” says Dave, “from imagination to formulation to production to the bottle.”

FINE WINES AND TOP-SHELF BOURBONS THE WINE RACK

W

hether new to fine wines and quality bourbons or a dedicated oenophile/ bourbon expert, The Wine Rack in Crescent Hill can stock your bar with the best. Owner John Johnson graduated from U of L in 1991 with an Economics degree and spent ten years in the financial industry in Houston. An interest in cooking led him to Cook Street School of Culinary Arts in Denver, where he

Dave is also happy to do virtual consultations, spending as much as 30 minutes to an hour via Zoom or phone to discuss scent preferences and what the client is looking for in a perfume. Customization is ontrend in the world of fragrance. Dave listens to the customer and then hones in on just the right blends from his wide selection of award-winning, Made in the USA perfumes. He sends some samples; the customer makes a choice and completes the transaction from the comfort of home. To browse more perfume descriptions and fragrance notes, visit american-perfumer.com.

also studied wine. After traveling to France and Italy with the program, John eventually completed sommelier training and returned to Louisville. He felt the city needed a more refined liquor store emphasizing education, enjoyment, and personal attention. In January 2003, John opened The Wine Rack on Frankfort Avenue and has been in the current building since 2009. In light of COVID, many wine and bourbon connoisseurs are shopping online or arranging in-store or curbside pick-up and treating themselves at home. Trying new wines from around the world is one way to travel vicariously, exploring different cultures and regions. John encourages potential customers that wine appreciation does not have to be intimidating. “I want to demystify wine. It’s not rocket science.” He has consistently offered free education and “guided flight” tasting events, including live Zoom tastings! On May 9, he held a Bordeaux Zoom tasting with Veronique Barthe of Château La Freynelle, Bordeaux, France. The virtual

event was open to anyone, whether or not they had purchased the wine for tasting. Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon C.C. Ranch and Harris Vineyard Merlot are currently priced at around $140 for the pair, a tremendous savings. The left-bank Bordeaux vines of Chateau Meyney have been cultivated since the 1600s. Château Meyney St. Estephe vertical set (different vintages of the same wine) of 2015, 2016, and 2017 would be perfect for tasting at a socially-distanced porch party. Bourbon and beer lovers enjoy The Wine Rack’s “On Location” Instagram Live series and following John’s Barrel Pick Program via social media and email. The Wine Rack features about six Barrel Picks per year, sometimes split with local restaurants. But act fast! A full barrel of 180+ bottles has been known to sell out in just two days! Be sure to check out The Wine Rack’s seasonal and customizable Gift Sets at wineshoplouisville.com. Follow The Wine Rack on Facebook to join the September 11 Willamette Valley, Oregon Zoom tasting.

MERKLEY KENDRICK JEWELERS

he trappings of success often develop high sentimental value as well. Nowhere is this more in evidence than at Merkley Kendrick Jewelers. Merkley Kendrick has devoted 188 years of service as Louisville’s oldest and most trusted source for fine jewelry and watches. James Lemon and William P. Kendrick established their jewelry business in downtown Louisville in 1832. After generations of name changes and relocations along Fourth Street, the Kendricks sold the company in 1966 to the Merkley family, operating out of the old Vogue Theater Center in St. Matthews. Merkley Kendrick opened their current Chenoweth location in 1971. “Merkley Kendrick is the second oldest independently-owned retail jeweler in the United States,” says third-generation President & CEO Brian Merkley. rom the moment you walk into the beautiful atrium of Louisville’s CaloSpa® Rejuvenation Center near Holiday Manor, the experience is meant to feel “first in class, first in service.” Started 23 years ago by board-certified, West Coast trained Dr. Brad Calobrace, the MediSpa and Plastic Surgery Center offers the latest techniques and technology. Because plastic surgery is elective, spa services go perfectly hand-in-hand to provide various surgical and nonsurgical options that make you look and feel your very best. Dr. Calobrace’s partner, Dr. Chet Mays, took some time to explore several of those options with us. Dr. Mays is originally from Somerset, Kentucky, and attended the University of Louisville School of Medicine. His father and three brothers are also surgeons, although

You walk in the door and say, “Alexa, turn on evening.” Like magic, the lights come up, your favorite music turns on, and the thermostat adjusts to the perfect temperature. Phil Chaney of Automated Lifestyles in Louisville can make that dream a reality. Phil’s roots in the business come from custom car audio in Louisville and Bowling Green. While living in Bowling Green, he worked in home audio/video and returned to Louisville to work with Ovation in the early 1990s. He started Automated Lifestyles in April 2007 and is in his 14th year of business. The business began by building home theaters doing business as Visual Concepts and evolved into a total turn-key smart home technology company. Automated Lifestyles focuses on being a “turn-key, one-stop-shop with concierge-level service and one point of accountability.” They build custom solutions for their clients with a proactive approach to maintenance and service. As part of their commitment to community, Independence Bank is investing in education in a big way. Since 2001, the Bank has awarded over $1 million in college scholarships to high school seniors throughout the state. What started with one $10,000 scholarship, has grown to 30+ scholarships today. Former CEO, Charles Reids’ dying wish was to start a scholarship program so that everyone could be aaorded the opportunity of a higher education.

The Bank’s investment to education extends beyond scholarships. It supports various organizations with an emphasis on higher learning. One of those being the Catholic Education Foundation. With the motto "The Answer is YES," the CEF has been helping kids from nancially challenged families to receive a K-8 Catholic School education for nearly 25 years. "With our rst grants in 1995, we helped about 200 kids," says Richard Lechleiter, President of the Foundation. "Now, we're up to over 3,000 annually. For the past several years, 100% of families who met the necessary conditions received assistance.” "The impact of a well-rounded education is necessary for cultivating tomorrow's leaders. This opportunity shouldn’t be limited, which is why we must invest in future generations now,” said Louis Straub, President of Independence Bank. Trinity High graduate and VP for Independence Bank, Brad Savko, learned rsthand the importance of a good education. "I was fortunate to attend a catholic school from kindergarten through high school. My education continued to build on what my parents instilled in me, and I wouldn't be where I am today without that strong foundation,” said Savko.

Independence Bank has answered YES to the CEF and is teaming up with them for their annual Salute To the Game fundraiser, one of their main fundraisers of the year. “By supporting events such as this, we play a role in planting the seeds of tomorrow,” said Straub.

Boutique Spotlight:

Rodeo Drive BY KATHIE STAMPS PHOTOS BY DICK ARNSPIGER

hen you think back on the big moments in life, you can remember the weather that day, what you were wearing and the song you heard before or after the event. “Our customers are really like family. We’re part of their lives,” said Michelle Tasman, co-owner of Rodeo Drive Boutique. “We are with them during life's biggest events, from first dates to marriage and everything in between."

44 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2020

Michelle is a partner with her mom, Raquel Koff, who opened Rodeo Drive in August of 1993. Yes, it’s pronounced Ro-DAYoh in honor of the famous street in Beverly Hills, California. At the time, the Louisville store was a high-end evening wear boutique on Shelbyville Road and 10 years later the boutique moved to its current home at Holiday Manor Center. “My mother, Raquel, is my role model. She is a wonderful mother, daughter, friend and businesswoman,” Michelle said. Michelle joined the store in 2008 when she moved back home from New York City where she was a producer for ABC News and “Good Morning America.” Michelle brings the media and marketing expertise to her mother’s business skills and fashion industry acumen to make a strong family-owned business.

“My grandmother, Sara, is also an influential part of this store,” Michelle said. “We dress three generations of women.” Because the owners believe fashion should be fun, they produce a live show that they call “The Real Housewives of Retail” on their Facebook page (@ShopRodeoDrive) at 4 p.m. daily, and a longer weekly show, also live, on Thursdays at 7 p.m. Customers from around the city, state and even the world tune in to watch the videos and purchase merchandise right then and there. Customers can also shop online (shoprodeodrive.com) and on their app, Shop Rodeo Drive, which is available to download for iPhone or Android. The boutique carries contemporary fashions, designer brands, shoes, jewelry, belts and other accessories—a ton of different products, and some of it is from local businesses.

DESIGNER TRUNK SHOWS are a frequent treat at Rodeo Drive, like this one featuring Lafayette 148's fall collection.

“We want everyone to be successful. We want the money to stay in the city of Louisville,” Michelle said. In fact, anytime you’re buying anything and a local store offers it, she would love for you to buy it locally. At the boutique, they have a “Rodeo Drive-thru” for curbside pickup and a website for online ordering and making virtual appointments with a stylist for a closet consult. Rodeo Drive and other stores in Louisville shut down during the most profitable time of year: Derby. “Now we can move forward with fall,” Michelle said. “The people who are pivoting are the ones that will be successful.” For many designers and for Rodeo Drive, that means more casual and loungewear attire than eveningwear. “We have something for everyone,” Michelle said. “If this pandemic has taught us anything it should be

that we should do what makes us happy in life. Life is short and retail therapy is real. So please let us be your shopping therapist.” 

eptember weather in Louisville is a bit unpredictable. Temperatures begin to moderate following August’s dog days of summer. Some days are bright and sunny; others hold the remnants of tropical storms. For the first time in a few months, the garden has finally cooled enough to work through an afternoon. Time to gather and enjoy the harvest and make preparations for bedding down to face the winter months. With one last turn of the compost pile, you can add those cut-back perennials that have finished their blooming. Discard any diseased vegetation separately. Keep cuttings of any plants that performed well. While September is a time for clean-up, there is plenty of planting left to do. Start some more tomato and pepper seeds; and direct-sow cool-season annuals, beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, greens, lettuce, onions, radishes, and peas. The pea plants will boost the nitrogen in the soil, preparing it for final plantings now and future spring plantings. Staying on top of harvesting fruits and vegetables as they ripen, will encourage more growth. If you’re

DESIGN GURU

Mees Tile Directs All Your Design Needs BY TAYLOR RILEY PHOTOS BY DICK ARNSPIGER

F

amily-owned Mees Tile and Marble has served Louisville and Lexington since 1954. They maintain a large inventory of ceramic, porcelain, glass and natural stone tile and are one of the largest importers and fabricators of natural stone and quartz in the midwest.

Todd Meyer, owner and CEO, says his showrooms are staffed with professional designers to assist customers with the selection of over 1,000 colors of ceramic, porcelain and natural stone into their homes. A customer of Mees can choose from a $5 million inventory of raw material that can be fabricated in Mees’ own production facility using state-of-the-art equipment. Mees has both materials and facilities, which puts the company in a unique position to offer “exquisitely crafted material in a timely manner,” says Todd. Todd said the company is a “one-stop shop” where customers can select prefinished hardwood, ceramic tiles and porcelain, and natural stone for flooring and walls. You’re only charged for what you use, not the entire slab, which is more cost-effective for customers; even usage of the inhouse design service is without extra charge. The company also offers financing options.

Mees restores stone, granite and marble for statues, natural stone altars, baptismals, church railings, furniture and other home improvement projects. The one-stop-shop restores tile and grout, as well as stains grout. So, why choose stone? Todd says it’s durable, affordable and can be used indoors and outdoors. It’s a focal point of any room and adds value to a home or business

odd says he’s seeing multiple trends when it comes to remodeling and building homes, including detailed finishes in kitchens and flooring. Many customers are requesting multi-dimensional items on backsplashes and shower walls. “Natural stone is everywhere,” Todd says. Marble is a hot item on kitchen countertops with multiple finishes such as leathered on the island and a polished finish on the perimeter. Mees can leather any color on countertops and then incorporate the countertop colors accordingly.

W

hen it comes to flooring, Todd says large format wood and ceramic tiles that look like wood are being installed at a rapid pace. These materials are great for those who have pets and don’t want to bother with upkeep. “It’s such a fantastic look,” Todd says. “It’s hard to tell the difference (between real and faux wood).” If you’d like to update or create your new space, Todd suggests taking pictures of your room and drawing the dimensions before arriving at the showroom in Louisville or in Lexington. Then, the customer will sit down with a designer to help create the new room with new flooring, backsplash and countertops. Visit one of the Louisville or Lexington showrooms or call their showrooms for more information. 

Layers of texture and color can make a significant impression in a room. Layering fur over a sofa or chair with varying textured pillows on top can yield an inviting and deluxe space that would make anyone want to curl up in. Layering elements of similar colors into accessories is a great way to add interest and uniqueness to a room. Mixing shades of blue, green with some natural elements such as silver, gold, or wood will brighten a room. Adding plush fabrics into window coverings, bedding, pillows and throws will also add layers of luxury into a room. Panel drapes in a living or dining room soften the space and add an element of luxury and elegance. Blackout panel drapes in a Master Bedroom are also particularly important to create a comfortable retreat.

W

e all know it is the small things in life that can really make an impact. Our living spaces are no different. Accessories can make or break an outfit in fashion and likewise, details can also transform a living space into a posh, distinct area. There should always be consistency throughout a home, a “flow” if you will. By adding unique details and layers of texture and color you can add luxuriousness to a room. There are some simple rules to live by when designing a luxurious space. Here are a few to follow:

think

Larger items make a bigger impact in a room. It is not always about more furniture but sometimes about larger furniture. You want to fill a space but not over-pack a space. Blank space is okay. For example, if you have a long wall where you would place a television, be sure the scale of the sideboard is significant enough to balance the empty wall space and the room layout. Additionally, large colorful artwork can make a huge impact, especially with neutral furnishings.

LIGHTING & Finishes

Lighting is everything! It is the jewelry of a room. It creates the mood, ambiance, and can elevate the overall feeling of a space. Mixing metals is okay, however, there should be a consistency in style throughout the home. Again, opt for larger pieces to make more of an impact in a space. Less is NOT more in this case. Whether flooring, hardware, faucets, or tiles, having updated, quality finishes in a home will not only enhance value but also add elements of opulence. 

Joey Spaulding OF ABUNDANT REDEMPTION CONTRACTING

Joey Spaulding is a man on a mission, devoted to following his passion for helping people grow. After years of working in the home remodeling business, he felt a strong calling to do business differently. "We started Abundant Redemption Contracting in 2017 with the vision of creating a business that puts God first," Joey says. "That starts with caring more about purpose than profit and loving our neighbors well." BY ROCKO JEROME PHOTOS BY DICK ARNSPIGER

W

ith the simple ideas of putting integrity and transparency first and doing for others as he would have done for himself, Joey and his tight-knit group of contractors treat each client as a member of their own family. "I know it can be a very stressful experience, uprooting things in your home and making big changes to the place you live," he says. "We treat everyone we work with with the greatest respect, and make certain that we make each and every residential remodel as close to the client's vision as possible." With Joey's leadership, ARC has had an incredible response from homeowners

in the Kentuckiana area. The growing company's good name is becoming more and more well known through positive word of mouth. "Our clients are engaged in every part of the process," says Joey. "For any renovation, we will set up an appointment at the space to talk about inspiration, design ideas, and go over any questions or concerns that you might have. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that coordination is everything with these projects. If you handle the front end correctly, everything else falls into place. After that free initial consultation, we can make a budgetary proposal and a succinct and accurate quote before we get into the design phase."

ARC employs a highly skilled designer and a first-rate Project manager. Joey works with a stellar kitchen cabinet company along with a great number of other remodeling experts in every field necessary to make your home remodeling dreams come true. "ARC was created out of a desire to see people grow into their God-given potential," says Joey. "We are all works in progress, but the beautiful thing is when we accept that we need help and allow Him to work, He creates something far greater than we could have imagined. Crafting Excellence isn't just a catchy phrase; it's a commitment to living on purpose!" 

ost people enjoy seeing chateau-style homes overseas on a European vacation, but you don’t have to take a day-long trip to feel like you’ve stepped into an Old World garden. At the end of a long, wooded driveway, you’ll see a French-Victorian mansion, Wooldridge Place, and it’s fit for a foliage fanatic.

Contractor Michael Gordon, and his family, own the 7,862-square-foot, 6-bedroom, 7-bathroom house that’s been renovated to its pristine current state. From the elaborate Old World kitchen to the ornate crown molding and trim, this house has both the elegance of the 21st Century and the charm of the 19th Century.

History History

Wooldridge Place was built in 1870, according to a historical writeup. The place originally held the address of LaGrange Road, but now is part of a residential neighborhood and sits on Wooldridge Place. Rapid industrial and urban expansion in the area led city residents to the countryside during the 1800s, including Orville Truman, a Louisville dry goods merchant, who built the Pewee Valley mansion. The original two-and-one-half story house, built in the Queen Anne Victorian style, had a parlor, reception room, dining room and kitchen on the first floor, four bedrooms on the second floor and three small rooms on the next half story, according to the home’s history. It was sheathed in 5-inch painted poplar clapboard with decorative areas of cedar shakes and fish-scale shingles. An octagonal tower stood at the rear of the home and sleeping porches were built on each side of the second floor. In 1923, the home was bought by Gregory Taylor and Ophelia W. Blackley who operated a school in the back room of the second floor until 1933. When the home was bought by heirs in 1941, it was considerably altered. The wrap-around Queen Anne porch was removed and a two-story Neoclassical porch with terrazzo floor and steps was constructed on the front of the house, according to its history, as well as a rathskeller which was built under the porch.

he home would eventually house the Bingham family, who owned and published The Louisville Courier-Journal and The Louisville Times. It was then owned by Donald and Karen Henson in 1994 who extensively remodeled the home. Sonny Whittle, an architectural artist, was employed to design and oversee this renovation. The porte-cochere, added after the original construction, was taken down. A one-story rear wing was designed to match the style, materials, and trim of the original home. The southeast section contained a master bedroom, bath, closets, vestibule, and halfbath; the northeast section had a large kitchen, great room and foyer. The back porches, terrace, and a story-and-a-half carriage house, which held three vehicles and had a living space above it, were added in the 1994 renovation. It was adjoined to the house by a pergola and drivethrough breezeway, according to the history.

Current Current

The current owners, self-proclaimed old home lovers, purchased Wooldridge Place in 2011. Michael says his goal was to bring the home back to its original French Victorian style after decades of modern renovations. He stripped down the whole home creating dramatic, three-piece crown moldings throughout with 1,600 4-piece dental blocks. Many of the floors were scraped and redone to create cognac, bourbon-colored finish. The cabinetry was made to be an Old World style with hand-carved woodwork. Countertops were replaced with granite and appliances were upgraded to all Viking fixtures. The family room was renovated to hold a dark library with all wood walls, a carved-woodwork fireplace with bookshelves on each side, and a coffered ceiling. In another room, MIchael reused a wooden mantle he found with a carved angel on a fireplace. He also used recovered stone in the breakfast room to continue the same style throughout the inside.

O

n the outside of the home, the front and rear porches were pulled off and rebuilt to stamped English stone. Chateau chimneys were replaced with aged copper to make the home look older. The roof now has specialty tile to look like slate to continue the look of the Victorian style. “(We wanted) everything to look old but redone,” Michael says. The carriage house remains with a full apartment and three-car garage. Landscaping was a great feat for the contractor. The plan included a forever lagoon pool, which was totally concrete, molded, and hand-done to look mature. The pool house holds a restroom, kitchen and seating area with the look of an English cottage, complete with vines on the exterior. Vines cover the main house, too, which is magnificent in the autumn, says Michael. “We are truly amazed at the color and looks of everything throughout the seasons.” Also worth noting are beautiful Old World bronze statues, a double-tiered bronze angel fountain, hand-made bronze prancing horses flanking the entrance stairs, along with bronze knights guarding the entrance door.

The contractor took two ash trees that were poisoned a few years ago, cut them down to 14-feet and had an artist hand-carve a statue of a highly-detailed wizard and a winged dragon to guard the castle. “I was always fascinated with castles and chateaus,” Michael says. The exterior is guarded like a medieval home with gothic fencing. After nine years of an on and off continuation of a dramatic recreation of an Old World English Victorian chateau, Michael and his family believe, in their eyes, that this masterpiece is finished. 

The Details: Size: 7,862-square-feet Bedrooms: 6 Bathrooms: 7 Neighborhood: Pewee Valley Style: French Victorian Built: 1870 Lot: 2.08 acres Design Features: Hardwood throughout; ornate crown molding and trim throughout; stonework; gothic fencing; stamped stone concrete; handbuilt Lagoon pool; stone pool house; carriage house with full apartment, 3-car garage; mature trees, variety of ornamental trees.

WAREHOUSE 764

E

veryone knows that particular chain store that gets in new homewares shipments every week from top designers, continually changing inventory, which creates that feeling of absolute bliss when you score some totally awesome buy. Well, meet your Central Kentucky game-changer, Warehouse 764.

Located in a sleepy part of Lexington, you would never know that the old Merit Furniture Building at 764 East 7th Street has been completely salvaged and turned into Lexington's best-kept secret. Warehouse 764 owners Keith and Carrie McCollum describe their store as "that bargain-hunting home décor store but on the next level. We sell furniture and accessories that are a step above your average chain or internet store." Upon entering the store, you'll find so much to love, including shockingly low prices! You can decorate your home with designer pieces that you thought were completely out of your budget.

764 East 7th Street, Lexington • (859) 948-5675 facebook.com/warehouse764

Keith, a Nicholasville native, has been in the furniture business for over 16 years, and he has designed a unique shopping experience. Instead of being open your typical Monday through Saturday, he has what he describes as “furniture events. Each week he receives three to four 53-foot semi truckloads stacked full of new merchandise. He and his crew then take the next two weeks to unload, unpackage and stage each item from the trucks. Warehouse 764 will then open for a two-day furniture event on Sat and Sunday. Gone are the days of waiting six to eight weeks for a sofa or dining table to be delivered. You can take your furniture home the same day or set up delivery the very next week. After each event, the system starts over again in preparation for the next opening two weeks later. This business model allows Keith to price the furniture, accessories, wall art and area rugs at a price much lower than the internet or traditional furniture stores.

Louisville, this store is a must-do. So, check the event dates on their Facebook Page or call (859)-948-5675. Not only will the store blow your mind, but so will the shopping experience. Keith, Carrie and their team (including son Cooper) are just about the most genuinely nice people you could meet. So, save the date. We all could use a weekend day trip. So, hop in the car and turn on your favorite jams and enjoy a quick ride to Lexington. You can thank us later!

ining the walls of the newest OLÉ Restaurant Group establishment, La Bodeguita de Mima, are several photos of a smiling beauty pageant winner. The lovely young lady also performed at the world-famous El Tropicana Night Club in Havana, Cuba. In 1994, she and her son Fernando Martinez, Jr. set sail for the United States in a homemade raft. They left behind the political unrest of Communist-ruled Cuba, were picked up by the US Coast Guard just off the coast of Key West, Florida, and spent months in Guantanamo Bay. Fernando and his cousin Yaniel have more than fulfilled Mima’s American dream.

Cubans, Cuban-Americans, Louisvillians, and visitors from all over will appreciate this latest in an impressive series of OLÉ ventures. The Martinez family waited years for the right building to be available and brought back to life as La Bodeguita de Mima. The Spanish/Cuban colonial architecture is accented with vibrant paint colors and has the cultural, traditional feel of 1950s Cuba. Along with the photos of Mima herself, the bar and restaurant proudly display portraits of prominent Cubans. La Bodeguita de Mima General Manager Ruben Plasencia is another Cuban-American success story. Ruben was a teacher in Cuba who came to the United States ten years ago. He worked as a bilingual instructor for JCPS and supplemented his income by working in restaurants. Seven years ago, while serving at Mussel & Burger Bar, his work ethic was recognized and rewarded with a promise to one day play a pivotal role in La Bodeguita de Mima. Ruben spent the intervening years operating an OLÉ-owned food truck and managing catering and private events. His passion for La Bodeguita de Mima is evident, as is his gratitude for a promise kept.

Ruben’s new home away from home is not just a restaurant but a multi-layer experience. On the first floor of La Bodeguita de Mima is an expansive front porch for outdoor seatings, a large dining room, a full bar, and a festive back patio. The second floor is perfect for private events, and cigar aficionados will flock to the cigar lounge and cigar deck opening by month’s end. There, torcedores will be rolling tobacco from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. But first, the feast! Ruben took us on a tour of the Dinner Menu, which at first glance might bear some similarities to other Cuban concepts in Louisville. La Bodeguita de Mima has surprises in store. For a twist on Mexican nachos, start with Cubanchos: plantain chips topped with black beans, pico, queso, guacamole, cilantro aioli, mojo onions, and a choice of lechón asado, chicken ropa vieja, or beef ropa vieja. Another Aperitivo option is Cuban Pork Tamal: a corn tamal stuffed with pork, topped with lechón asado, mojo onions, pico, and cilantro aioli. A vegan version features a mushroom picadillo. Ruben highlighted two Entradas. The Ropa Vieja en Lata is braised and shredded short rib cooked in a tomato wine sauce with onions

and peppers made fresh but served in a sealed can. The server opens it tableside with a can opener and a little Cuban food history lesson. Celebrate 400 years of Spanish culture with Arroz con Pollo la Chorrera: a Cuban risotto with Spanish paella influences. Delicious boneless chicken cooked in yellow rice with beer, sofrito, peas, green olives, and roasted peppers is served with tostones (crispy fried plantains) and chives. For Postre, anyone can finish the meal with this cigar: the Habano de Chocolate. A chocolate “cigar” is made with almond cake, Nutella mousse, chocolate ganache and served with coffee ice cream. The smoking cigar box presentation takes this dessert delightfully over the top. In addition to the cigar lounge, the end of September also marks the start of Mima’s car service. A pristine 1957 Chevy Bel Air transports guests from their homes, touring around town before arriving at La Bodeguita

de Mima for dinner, drinks, and dancing to live music. Then travel home safely in style. La Bodeguita de Mima social media will be announcing all the details soon! In the meantime, escape your quarantine routine or celebrate a special occasion in a fun, safe atmosphere. Enter as a guest; leave as part of the family. 

hether venturing out for the evening or celebrating a special occasion in the comfort of your home, La Chasse delivers literally and figuratively. Delivery is free within 15 miles of their Highlands location. Dine-in and carryout service are continuing for the foreseeable future. Guests can experience the same elevated, yet rustic wood-fired European cuisine they expect in the La Chasse dining room. According to owner Issac Fox, La Chasse is “warm and welcoming, without being stuffy and pretentious.” The real luxury lies in the quality of the fresh seasonal ingredients and the “seriousness of the craft cocktail menu.” As for the food, La Chasse is thrilled to welcome back Executive Chef Alex Dulaney and his “intricately-woven Southern French and European menu that is prepared with classic French technique.” Isaac recommends some of their more

decadent menu options. Begin with an Appetizer of Sautéed Prince Edward Island Mussels du Jour with pomme frites, or Prosciutto e Melon: honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon, prosciutto, lime vinaigrette, and Fior di Latte mozzarella. Isaac’s salad of choice is the Campagnarde of frisée, broccolini, bacon, softboiled egg, dressed with whole-grain mustard-apple cider vinaigrette. For the main event, Issac suggested a few entrees. The Cast Iron 8 oz. Filet is always a classic, with Three Sisters crab hash, haricot verts, and Béarnaise sauce. The Pan Seared Scallops St. Jacques are cast iron seared Bristol scallops with buttermilk-English pea mash, prosciutto dust, roasted cherry tomatoes, and garlic-thyme beurre blanc. Vegetarians will enjoy a beautiful Heirloom Tomato Pie with puff pastry made in-house, balsamic onions, basil, parmesan aioli, and green salad. Dessert soufflés have returned on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. La Chasse is now hosting Saturday Backyard BBQs in the rear parking lot. Customers can call ahead, drive up, walk up, or dine outside in a safe, socially-distanced environment.

he signature dining room and pinnacle of The Brown Hotel’s trio of world-class dining experiences, the English Grill blends contemporary American cuisine with Kentucky culinary tradition. The Brown Hotel opened in October 1923 and was swinging throughout the Roaring Twenties. Following nightly dinner dances that stretched into morning, guests would wander down to the hotel restaurant for early breakfasts and hangover cures. Chef Fred Schmidt whipped up The Hot Brown in 1926, and the rest is history. The Brown Hotel is a downtown Louisville landmark of architectural elegance and Southern hospitality with updated guestrooms and modern amenities. English Grill and Lobby Bar Manager, Sommelier, and Bourbon Steward J. Troy Ritchie describes English Grill as “the quintessential place to say ‘I love you.’ The sound softens coming

Those proposals and moments in time are accentuated by the oak paneling, plaster inlays, chandeliers, the long bar, and oversized tables.” Troy previously worked under Dean Corbett at Corbett’s and Equus. In a long and impressive pedigree of chefs, English Grill’s Executive Chef is James Adams, and Dustin Willett is Chef de Cuisine. Troy suggests Farmers Salad with Groganica Farms heirloom lettuce, baby heirloom tomatoes, watermelon, Marcona almonds, pecorino cheese, and champagne vinaigrette. If you’ve never had the original Hot Brown, settle in for roasted turkey breast, toast points, Mornay sauce, and Pecorino Romano cheese, baked to a golden brown and topped with bacon and tomatoes. The Colorado Rack of Lamb is a stunner with saffron risotto, grilled broccolini, olive and red pepper relish, and red wine jus. On the lighter side, Verlasso Salm-

It’s like a time machine.” Equally exciting is the food crafted by Jack Fry’s new Executive Chef Jonathan Exum, who has already made his mark. Start things off with the decadent Raclette Appetizer. His Lobster Carbonara is “bucatini, lobster claw meat, langoustine tails, pancetta, and English peas in a classic egg sauce with parmesan, cracked black pepper, and garlic bread crumbs.” Chef Exum’s Catch of the Day is always the freshest, flaky white fish he can find with “preserved lemon soubise, Marcona almond-quinoa pilaf, charred Shishito peppers, heirloom cherry tomatoes, and almond-herb gremolata.” Beef Filet is a Jack Fry’s classic, and the Pork Chop has remained a comfort food favorite for over 20 years. oused in the Art Deco/Streamline Moderne terminal building of historic Bowman Field, Bistro Le Relais provides a unique ambiance with impeccable service and authentic French bistro cuisine. An evening out on the deck at Bistro Le Relais watching the planes land feels like a scene straight out of Casablanca. Owner Anthony Dike revels in his role as consummate host and Louisville ambassador. Anthony, born and raised in Switzerland, moved to New York in 1981 for a job with E.F. Hutton. He also began working in the city’s fine-dining scene. In April 1988, An-

thony partnered with Jean DeNoyer, whose wife was from Louisville, to open Le Relais. They were thrilled with their first Derby season when they managed to clear the funds for an industrial dishwasher. Anthony Dike eventually became sole proprietor. After two successful decades, Anthony felt they should roll with the changing economy and attempt to attract a younger clientele. He changed the name of the restaurant to Bistro Le Relais. “That’s when I decided to take off my tie and add French fries to the menu.” The atmosphere became a bit more relaxed, but the authentic French cuisine and multiple award-winning wine list remained.

For starters, Anthony recommends the Escargots de Bourgogne in traditional garlic herb butter and the Wild Chesapeake Oyster Salad with cornmeal-crusted oysters, grilled corn, and charred scallion buttermilk dressing. For the Main Course, the Truitte Picatta is brioche dusted rainbow trout with preserved lemon and caper beurre blanc. Or try the Carré d’Agneau, herb-roasted rack of lamb with ratatouille and cavatappi in a fourcheese bechamel. Their “New Fashioned ~ Old Fashioned” is a perfect nightcap with orange bitters, La Perruche pure cane sugar, and Woodford Reserve Bourbon. Oasis Spa at Baptist Health/Milestone Wellness Center BY DAWN ANDERSON • COURTESY PHOTOS

T

o enjoy the rejuvenating luxury of a spa day but still feel safe and secure, Oasis Spa at Baptist Health/Milestone Wellness Center is the answer. Oasis Spa has served clients in its current location for 20 years. The spa has undergone a couple of renovations to keep the experience fresh and modern. Spa Director Jennifer Romero joined Oasis Spa four years ago after working for 15 years as a massage therapist and then teaching massage, anatomy, and physiology. Her staff is highly-trained as well. “We have the best therapists in the city. I would put them up against anyone in the country.” Oasis Spa services include massage therapy, skin and body care, including microdermabrasion, facials, and waxing, and manicures and pedicures. Massage therapists are skilled in various massage therapy methods such as reflexology, trigger point therapy, deep tissue, manual lymphatic drainage, pre- and post-natal, Pillossage, and Swedish massage. They begin by listening to the client about any problem areas and combine different modalities to personalize treatment for significant effects. Patients undergoing cancer treatments get massages tailored to their specific needs. Onsite Baptist Health physical therapists can also walk patients down to the spa to receive additional therapy through massage. This communication between therapists and the client is invaluable in maximizing results. Massage therapy can ease anxiety, depression, and seasonal affective disorder in the coming fall and winter months. At Oasis Spa, they believe in “pampering with a purpose,” says Jennifer, “We want our service to not only feel good for you but help keep you healthy in the long run.” For example, manicures emphasize and enhance all-natural nails only, as acrylics and dip powder nails can be damaging. Oasis Spa

manicurists and pedicurists are trained to keep an eye out for possible warning signs of underlying health issues or diseases. In this age of mask-wearing to protect public health, facial treatments can be especially helpful. The struggle with “maskne” is real! Oasis Spa’s Detox Facial, for example, is perfect for refreshing and renewing after mask-wearing. Express, European Deep Cleansing, Enzyme Deep Cleansing & Collagen Mask, Rosacea, Skin Renewal, Vitamin C, Firming HSR, Brightening, Hydro, and Reversive Facials are also available. “At the Oasis Spa at Baptist Health Milestone Wellness Center, all facial treatments feature the BABOR Skincare System, a premium European line made of active natural ingredients and used by estheticians worldwide.” Eco-fin Paraffin Alternative for face, hands, or feet “made with 100% natural plant-based emollients and a blend of oils including soy, jojoba, organic coconut as well as shea butter, vitamin E and essential oils for aromatherapy” can be added for a small fee. In September and October, the spa is offering free skincare consultations to suggest

facial treatments tailored to your particular skin issues or needs. Because Oasis Spa is located in a healthcare setting, you can be very confident in their safety and sanitation procedures. “These days, safety, self-care, and relaxation are more important than ever. For years I have been a client/member of Oasis Spa. Facials, massage, manicures, and pedicures - each treatment better than the last. When they re-opened their doors during the pandemic, I was thrilled. They created a safe, clean environment and are professional and conscientious of today’s new health challenges. The spa is clean, and each provider wears a mask. I feel totally comfortable with the procedures and policies Oasis Spa put into place to accommodate their customers so I can still enjoy the wonderful treatments they have always provided.” said Oasis Spa client Terry Ely. Other services offered at the spa are facial peels and brow and lash tinting. Milestone members receive a discount on spa services. Dealing with 2020 Anxiety BY DAWN ANDERSON PHOTOS BY DICK ARNSIPGER

T

o say that 2020 has been a tumultuous year thus far is an understatement. With an ongoing pandemic, continuing economic uncertainty, social unrest, and an upcoming presidential election, how do we prevent feeling overwhelmed from becoming our default setting? The CDC offers the following “Healthy Ways to Cope with Stress”: the side effects that go hand in hand with traditional prescription antidepressants, Whitney was able to take MAGNA’s Denovo® supplement to manage her symptoms.

• Know where and how to get treatment, counseling, or therapy. • Take care of your emotional health. • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including those on social media.

According to the product drug facts, “Denovo® is a dietary supplement used for the metabolic management of low folate levels associated with mood disorders.” Although Denovo® is not an antidepressant drug, this readily absorbable folate helps regulate imbalances in the neurotransmitters, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, that lead to depressive symptoms and provides “adjunctive support for individuals who are on an antidepressant.” For about $1 a day, most patients begin to feel results in two to three weeks.

Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Eat healthy, well-balanced meals. Exercise regularly. Get plenty of sleep. Avoid excessive alcohol or drug use. • Make time to unwind. • Connect with others. • Connect with your community or faithbased organizations. If you have made a valiant effort at the usual healthy coping mechanisms but still feel anxious or depressed, a discussion with your primary care physician may be in order. However, many people are uncomfortable with the idea of prescribed benzodiazepines or SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) antidepressants, primarily due to unpleasant side effects. Prescribed drugs may be necessary for some, and you should always consult with your doctor before beginning any over-the-counter medications or supplements. However, there are safe, effective alternatives available which may be combined with SSRIs to increase their effectiveness or lower the dosing of SSRIs. MAGNA Pharmaceuticals offers allergy, cough and cold products as well as three dietary supplements, Denovo®, Nufola®, and MAGNA Omega-3, that can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, mild depression, and other mood, inflammatory, and nervous system disorders. MAGNA Pharmaceuticals is owned and operated right here in Louisville. Dr. Warren P. Lesser founded MAGNA in 2000 after acquiring another small pharmaceutical company. After working in Big Pharma in the

late ’70s and the 1980s, he made it his mission with MAGNA Pharmaceuticals to provide safe, effective and affordable products. He accomplished this by acquiring off-patent “legacy drugs” and formulating OTC efficacious allergy, cough and cold products, and dietary supplements. “I realized we could make a living by providing patent-expired, tremendous products, which were abandoned by Big Pharma,” says Dr. Lesser. MAGNA sells to wholesalers as well to the general public through e-commerce. Because all of MAGNA’s products are OTC, they can eliminate the middlemen and PBMs, who contribute to driving up drug prices. By shopping with MAGNA, you can support a local company and not even leave your house. Knowing how good these products are, every MAGNA employee personally takes one or more MAGNA products themselves. Whitney Schulten, MAGNA Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Director of Communication and Business Optimization suffered from postpartum depression after the birth of her son. Not wanting

Nufola® and MAGNA Omega-3 help reduce inflammation in the body, which has been linked to depression. Nufola® with readily absorbable B-6, B-9, B-12, and ALA supports a healthy nervous system. MAGNA Omega-3 is formulated with the clinically recommended ratio of EPA:DHA for cardiac and cognitive health support. In addition, MAGNA Pharmaceuticals’ antihistamine Ahist®, and antihistamine/decongestants Stahist AD® and Stahist TP® help treat Louisville’s infamous seasonal allergies that can otherwise cause sleepless nights. Sleep deprivation often contributes to anxiety. Another consideration regarding anxiety and depression is that depression can manifest differently in men and women. Men tend to experience feelings of anger and irritability, whereas women feel deep sadness, worry, and fatigue. In treating these symptoms, MAGNA Pharmaceuticals focuses its efforts on quality versus quantity. Dr. Lesser says, “There is nothing better than a patient coming back and saying, ‘This MAGNA product really helped me.’”

Women’s Collaborative BY KATHIE STAMPS • COURTESY PHOTOS

“C

reating and sustaining artistic, peaceful spaces in West Louisville.” This is the mission of the West Louisville Women’s Collaborative. WLWC started in 2014 and is going strong as a group of multiracial, multigenerational women who focus on transforming vacant and abandoned property in Louisville’s West End. ”We’re a creative bunch of women who use our gifts and talents to offer healing through art,” said Mariel Gardner, president of the WLWC board of directors. The board has 14 members, ranging in age from 29 to 89, all of whom either live, work, worship, own property or offer services to the West End. “We are friends first, and that's why the organization works so well; we are accountable to each other because we are friends, and we like each other. It is a real sisterhood.” The group’s flagship project was the creation of a peace labyrinth in Chickasaw. Designed as a place of meditation and healing for the families of those who were victims of gun violence, the labyrinth is a walking path lined with 450 bricks painted with inspirational messages by members of the community. “It also doubles as a butterfly garden. It is a good place to go and relax your mind,” Mariel said. WLWC owns the peace labyrinth property at 3831 Hale Avenue, and they are looking to purchase the property next door and turn it into an artist-in-residence space for the West End. “We hope we can help other neighbors purchase other properties around us,” Mariel said.

106 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2020

The members of the WLWC think everybody is an artist. “It's in you,” Mariel said. “It's up to us to help you reveal what's already inside of you. Art is for everybody.” In a typical year, WLWC offers a monthly community jam session, an open studio for people to make art and talk, and a Bahari sisterhood circle. “We try to give people the tools to be active in their community,” Mariel said. “West End residents deserve everything. We want to give people the tools to do the thing.” Give for Good is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser. The 2020 event will be WLWC’s fourth year to participate. “We wanted to do something that had an immediate impact in these COVID times,” Mariel said of this year’s 24-hour fundraising campaign. “What we are planning to do is offer a free subscription service to West

End residents. We are calling it Spreading H.E.A.L.I.N.G.” This stands for Healthy Entertainment and Love Inspiring Neighborhood Good. The monthly service will be a kit containing items for making soap, candles, kites or herb gardens for recipients to gather together, virtually, and make their projects at the same time. And if you’re looking for a great opportunity to volunteer? “WLWC exists in everybody; and if it doesn’t, we want to get our vibe into you,” Mariel said. “We look for people who want to be useful, connect with others and believe that art has the power to heal.”

Asia Institute

Crane House In the mid-1980s, an Asian cultural center was established on South 3rd Street in Louisville. It was originally called The China Institute, but more popularly, it was known as Crane House. In 1996, the name was changed to Asia Institute – Crane House (AICH) to reflect its expanded coverage. BY KATHIE STAMPS • COURTESY PHOTOS

ICH serves as a community resource for promoting the understanding of Asian cultures and heritage through education, outreach and the arts. Cultural programs and events include performances and activities at festivals, elementary schools, high schools, the University of Louisville, community centers and at AICH itself. In addition to artistic performances, staff and volunteers have taken educational programs into schools, community centers and libraries to help people develop cultural sensitivity, appreciation and understanding.

“AICH has been a community resource for over 33 years and loves to pull from the local talent of Kentuckiana to share Asian art, food, culture and crafts,” said Joel Buno, executive director of the organization. “Food is a great way to learn about other cultures.” Asia Institute – Crane House holds cooking classes from time to time; the last one in person was in February on how to cook dumplings and lumpia. On Feb. 29, there was plenty of fun and festivities with the Leap Year Karaoke Party at AICH, co-hosted with NoraeBar. Local Asian chefs are featured to celebrate the Asian Lunar New Year, an occasion that falls on a different date every year (it will be on Feb. 12 in 2021).

108 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2020

Offering community dialogue is a cornerstone of AICH, bringing people in the community together to “exchange information and develop cooperation among greater Louisville’s diverse Asian communities,” Joel said. Throughout the year, AICH has exhibitions of work by emerging and established Asian artists from Louisville, southern Indiana and across the United States. “Exhibits have focused on geography, history and diverse art forms

including ceramics, textiles and clothing, photography, installation art, calligraphy, brush painting and culinary arts,” Joel said. In partnership with the Freeman Foundation, AICH sends 12 or more teachers to Asia each summer to teach English, learn about Asian culture, and bring back new resources to their classrooms. AICH also hosts a summer immersion Mandarin language program for rising middle school and high school students, taught by native speakers. Although these popular programs were suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, AICH looks forward to reinstating both programs when it is safe to do so. Asia Institute – Crane House is excited to be participating in the Community Foundation of Louisville’s annual Give for Good campaign again. During last year’s campaign, AICH hosted an open house featuring the Louisville Lion Dance Team, UofL’s Cardinal K-Pop Dance Team, hands-on Asian arts and crafts

demonstrations, and dumpling, samosa and eggroll tastings. “We love participating with CFL’s Give for Good campaign to help raise funds for our organization and to showcase the mission work that we love sharing with the community,” Joel said, calling the campaign a great opportunity for the community “to contribute to the many charitable organizations which enrich and enhance the Louisville community and experience. From arts organizations to health and human services institutions, any donation, big or small, impacts the community for the better. We hope to share dumplings or sake soon.” 

AMPED TOPS CARES

They come into the building, log in, take their classes and ideally they go home, but that never happens, they hang out.

Academy of Music Production Education & Development

– DAVE CHRI STOP HE R

BY KATHIE STAMPS • COURTESY PHOTOS

AMPED gives parents the resources, and they do the work. “That's how we hold our kids and families accountable,” he said. “We are a resource provider. In addition to financial resources, we provide mentoring, support, love, care and the concern that it takes.”

A

cademy of Music Production Education and Development is one organization that lives up to its acronym of AMPED. Dave Christopher is the founder and director of AMPED. It began as a summer program in 2014 and now the music and technology nonprofit organization operates year-round as a recording studio where kids from 8 to 18 learn how to play the drums, piano, guitar or the musical instrument of their choice—including voice, the most portable instrument of all—and they learn music theory, audio engineering and production, videography, web design and marketing along the way. In academy style, they take classes and have a major and minor. “They come into the building, log in, take their classes and ideally they go home, but that never happens, they hang out,” Dave said. AMPED has great support from JCPS because the school system knows how important and effective AMPED is. Students’ grades go up and behavior issues go down.

From day one, tuition for the AMPED academy has been free, thanks to grants and donations. “We took 11 kids to Belize last year to study music,” Dave said. “We took 24 kids to

110 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2020

New Orleans in October 2016 to study with a jazz band. Both were weeklong trips. That's a lot of fundraising, a lot of community support.” In 2016, AMPED got a grant from the National Center for Families Learning. “I heard the founder, Sharon Darling, make a statement. ‘There’s no such thing as a child in poverty that doesn’t live with a family in poverty.’” The quote stuck with him and Dave knew AMPED was missing a critical piece of the puzzle, because the kids were going back into homes where the family was struggling. Thanks to the national grant, and through fundraisers like the annual Give for Good campaign, AMPED now gives kids a place to go, feeds them, tutors them and brings the adults in with them. “We're a multigenerational organization that focuses on youth and their families,” Dave said. He comes from an IT background, so he teaches the parents about technology. He tells them, “You do your part, we’ll do our part.”

“Give for Good is an amazing event,” he said. “It brings so much awareness. It's an opportunity for those organizations to get that shine, to get that opportunity for people to see who they are and what they're doing. It’s hard to express how great that is.” The academy’s music instructors aren’t volunteers. They’re paid, because consistency is of utmost importance. “These are kids people don't normally show up for,” Dave said. The students learn how to write songs, how to put trauma and hurt into artistic expression through notes, beats, chord progressions and harmony. “Once we can get that out of them and talk about that, when we get all the garbage out, then we can start pouring good in,” Dave said.

bout 70% of properties listed for sale contain rooms that are empty, ugly, or both," says Matt Langan of Stuccco. "This is a problem for Realtors® because 90% of buyers report being unable to imagine how to design rooms like this. Historically, Realtors® would hire in-person home stagers to overcome this obstacle. The problem is the cost of traditional staging- thousands of dollars, weeks of time, and possible property damage. Virtual staging allows Realtors® to get the power of staging without the drawbacks of in-person staging."

Here's how it works: a Realtor® sends property photos to Stuccco, who add furniture and decor to the pictures. In 24 hours, the Realtor® gets virtually staged photos which they use to help sell the property. "Virtual staging is 98% more affordable and 93% faster than traditional staging and guarantees property photos will look great," Matt shares. "It's also a COVID-19 safe and environmentally friendly solution, which is top of mind." What's unique about Stuccco is that it's the only virtual staging company in the world that can turn staged designs into reality via its Online Interior Design service, which involves a homeowner hiring a Stuccco designer. "We can design any space to suit any budget, style, and room size. It's a virtual collaboration that's $1,500 more affordable and 14 days faster than in-person interior design." en Palmer-Ball has made Digs Home and Garden an oasis in Chenoweth Square, a fabulous source for quality interior and exterior furniture and accessories as well as gifts, jewelry, and wearables. Digs also offers design services and consultation. “I moved back from California after 15 years working as an architect,” says Ben. “I loved the way people blend their indoor and outdoor spaces and I wanted to introduce this trend in Louisville.” With no retail experience, Ben opened Digs 20 years ago. “We are blessed to have loyal and dedicated customers,” Ben continues. “We constantly restyle and restock the store to keep abreast of trends and to keep the merchandise fresh. That provides a creative challenge and keeps me looking forward to coming to work, trying to be the best we can be.” 3905 Chenoweth Square, Louisville, KY 40207 (502) 893-3447 | DIGSHOMEANDGARDEN.COM

MARIAN SANG KNEPSHIELD

F

or Marian Sang Knepshield, working in the beauty business has been a lifelong vocation. “I was working in my mother’s salon since I was six years old as the Saturday receptionist,” she recalls. “As an adult, I continued to work for my mother, Immy Moberly. I was a stylist at her business for 22 years, where I received the best and most arduous training available by a consummate professional. She had escaped from North Korea as a teenager and was one tough cookie!” After her mother retired, Marian briefly worked for the company that purchased the business. Marian decided it was the perfect time to step up when that owner decided to sell, and she bought the salon herself. Today, it’s known as Omagi Salon Spa, an Aveda Lifestyle Salon offering a full array of Aveda haircare, skincare, and makeup.

achel Southard is a born bartender, but after several years and great heights in that vocation, she turned away from the nightlife into a strong career in sales. “Although I excelled in my career, I needed more family time and my kids needed a happy mom,” she says. “Then, I had this idea.” That’s how Wandering Spirits was born. It’s Louisville’s premiere traveling bar, bringing all the fun of a high end bar right to your home or any location. You supply the alcoholic beverages. Rachel handles the rest, bringing her elegant black trailer, add ons that include a greenery wall and a vintage bourbon bar, and, most of all, her fantastic mixology expertise. “It’s a fully customizable experience,” she says. “It’s been a blast to see the vision become a reality.”

imberly Greenwell, the engaging creator, producer, and host of the weekly program My Southern Home, turned her passion for helping people create their dream home into a oneof-a-kind television show. “The goal of My Southern Home is to educate and inspire homeowners to create their dream spaces,” she says. “Whether it is building a home from the ground up or creating their dream kitchen, I introduce my viewers to trusted professionals that can help them. Many people don’t know where to start, think their dream home is unattainable, or have heard horror stories about building or remodeling a home. We are talking about construction, so something is always going to come up, but when you use trusted professionals, they know how to handle unexpected surprises and can navigate you through the process to achieve your end result.” Barber Cabinet Company, the title sponsor of My Southern Home loved being part of the show so much they asked her to expand to the Nashville

market. My Southern Home Nashville launched in August of 2018, one year to the date after the first airing of My Southern Home in Louisville. Kimberly remains inspired and passionate about what she does. “I love what I do because I love helping people with their home,” she says. “If I can help one person build their dream, that’s a win for me!” Episodes from the latest season of My Southern Home can be seen every Sunday at 10 AM on WBKI-CW 58. You can also view pictures of some of the homes featured on the show by visiting her inspiration gallery on mysouthernhometv.com. TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2020 119
