Ask the Experts: Bank of the Bluegrass C: If one or both partners have an obsession with stuff, it can become very visible.

Beth Prewitt, V.P. Wealth Management Advisor 2

It’s Valentine’s Day—let’s talk relationships. One of the most important relationships you can have is with your finances, so we brought in the financial experts: Beth Prewitt and Caroline French of Bank of the Bluegrass.

Q: What’s important when it comes to a financial relationship with a partner? Caroline (C): It requires being open & honest during all the stages of planning and budgeting as a couple. It requires a lot of trust, communication, & willingness to take on responsibilities together. Beth (B): Being completely transparent regarding your financial situation as a couple. It can be one of the hardest conversations that you can have, but it’s probably the most important one in your relationship. Money is an emotional topic for most people. We tend to be very private about our feelings about finances.

Q: What have you seen as couples navigate their finances together? C: Opposites attract! Savers and spenders, practical buyers and lavish gift givers. B: I’ve seen a lot of people end up in specific roles when they don’t necessarily

need to. One person might take on the responsibility of managing money and paying bills—but it can be a lot easier if both partners collaborate and communicate. Ask each other about spending habits, financial goals, and debt!

B: Exactly! Take “retail therapy” for example. It can make us temporarily feel better, but it’s common to slip into buyer’s remorse when we see how it has affected our budgets. It’s easy to trick ourselves into doing these things to get what we think we want in the moment, at the expense of our long-term goals. C: It’s not that different from mindful eating. Think of your budget as mindful spending—is it a good balance of quality and quantity? Does it bring you joy, or solve a need? And, ultimately, is what you’re purchasing worth the money, both now and in the future? B: When you have goals you’re working toward together, it helps. How much does this dream cost? What are we going to cut out or cut back on to make it happen? And then once you achieve it, it’s so much more meaningful—because you did it together.

Q: How can couples foster stronger financial relationships? B: It starts with being honest about your finances. But it also comes from shared goals— do you want to go on a vacation together every year? Major purchases coming up? Retire early together? Figure out your dream life, then start building it together. C: A business coach I admire introduced me to this exercise years ago, and I’ve found it applies to a wide variety of situations. Start by jotting down as many lofty financial ambitions you can imagine—as individuals, and then as a couple. Weed these down to a top ten list, and then to your top three. Write a mission statement for your financial lives that combines these three main goals, and weigh each important financial choice against your stated mission for alignment with your identity together.

Q: What issues can come up when you’re consciously working toward goals together?

NEXT STEPS: Want to get started on your financial plan? Looking for your perfect advisor? Come see Caroline, Beth, and the rest of the experts at Bank of the Bluegrass & Trust Co. We’ll help you build a solid financial strategy that works for you. Call (859) 233-4500 today!

YOU

in the name of (self) love! Valentine’s Day is looming. While it’s always nice to appreciate the romance in our lives, have you taken any time lately to think about your relationship with yourself? This month, we’re encouraging you to leave behind some bad behaviors and how to imrpove your relationship with yourself. Comparing yourself to others Some people are motivated to achieve through others’ success. For the rest of us, it feels like an ever-moving goalpost in an impossible to win competition. Social media and LinkedIn make it virtually impossible to shut out messages that we’re not doing enough. As Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Try instead: When you catch yourself measuring yourself by the yardstick of others, take some time to reflect on your own successes and goals. If it helps, write a list of things you’re proud of and keep it handy for these moments. Minimizing Yourself It’s so easy to fall into the trap of lessening ourselves when we’re in public spaces. We make ourselves smaller, blend in and stay quiet. Try instead: For one month, try being bolder. Take up space. Wear loud colors and outlandish styles. Join in conversations. Ruminating Each of us has our regrets. But ruminating on the “coulda, woulda, shoulda” of life can make anyone miserable. We all make mistakes and miss opportunities. But staying stuck in self-blame prevents you from accepting the reality of your life or having hope for the future. Try instead: When you start thinking about what might’ve been “if only,” stop that train of thought in its tracks. Shift your focus to forgiving yourself for past choices and embracing making the best of the present moment – while using what you’ve learned to make better choices going forward. Saying “yes” when you really mean “NO” There are always situations when we’re roped into something we don’t want to do. But how many times a month do you consciously prioritize someone else’s comfort over your well-being? Try instead: Ask yourself if their comfort is really worth more than your happiness – and whether it’s worth eventually resenting them for forcing you to make that choice. As Prentis Hemphill once said, “Boundaries are the distance at which I can love you and me simultaneously.” Being mean to yourself. Almost all of us is guilty of talking about ourselves – and our bodies – in ways we would never talk about a friend. There’s nothing wrong with having goals for selfimprovement, but harsh, negative self-talk is absolutely out of bounds. Try instead: Accept every part of yourself as part of the wonderful, amazing, dynamic, talented whole. That doesn’t mean loving and celebrating each facet of yourself; rather, it means being able to see “negatives” in a neutral way – and without talking trash about yourself.

After years and years of envisioning your dream wedding day you finally said, “Yes!” to your number one man and it’s time to actually plan this thing. You’re probably wondering where to even begin. You’re asking yourself, “What do I do first?”, “When do we want to get married?”, “How am I going to get everything done?” This is where a Wedding Planner comes in. From partial planning to full service, they all have one thing in common; becoming your partner-in-crime during the entire planning process. If you decide to hire a Wedding Planner, here are some of the services they can offer to make your wedding journey as stress-free as possible:

Overall Wedding Design

Your pinterest board is probably jam packed with all the gorgeous inspiration you have for your wedding decor. Sometimes it’s hard to bring those ideas to life for your own wedding. Questions like, “where can I rent that chair?”. “What color tablecloth should I do?”, “How should I lay out my reception space?” all come to mind. These are the details a Wedding Planner can help compile for you into one complete design plan so that your wedding turns out just the way you envisioned it, and maybe better! Details like a cohesive floral vision, venue floor plan, table setting designs and more can be brought to life by your wedding planner to help create a seamless and beautiful event for everyone!

Vendor Booking + Logistics

If you’re at the beginning of your planning and need help researching different vendors before booking, having a planner is the perfect resource. Most wedding planners will have a “preferred vendor” list of vendors they’ve previously worked with and enjoy working with. They can provide you with a suggested list based on your vision, style and budget which can help narrow down your search from the start! In addition to booking your vendors, handling all communication is another service your wedding planner can offer. Things like keeping track of invoices/contracts, payment deadlines and meetings can be taken off your plate, making planning feel like a breeze so you can focus on the fun!

Day of Coordination + Setup/Teardown Services

One of the biggest perks of having a Wedding Planner is that they are also your “day-of” coordinator. They will help in creating a Master Timeline from start to finish that is then shared with all of your day-of vendors (ex: DJ, Photographer, etc). You get to wake up on your wedding day and not have to worry about anything other than enjoying every second and living in the moment. A Planner will keep your timeline on track and make sure your wedding day goes off without a hitch! Additionally, a lot of wedding planners will assist in decor setup and breakdown if that’s something that is not provided by your venue or catering team. This is a huge help in making sure your vision comes to life on the big day. Sign placement, table decor, etc. can all be taken care of by your planner and allow your Mom or overachieving Aunt Judy enjoy the day right by your side!

Jayme and Mark met 5 years ago when he became a client/ advertiser with TOPS magazine as the owner of Carson’s restaurant. They instantly struck up a friendship and enjoyed each other’s quick-witted banter. Their connection grew over time, and, fast-forward 4 years later they were planning a future together while deciding to take the next step and get married. They debated having a wedding at their age, as it was not a first marriage for either of them. Ultimately they wanted to throw a great party for family and friends and hopefully walk away with a nice photo or two to frame. As former President of TOPS Marketing, Jayme knew of several possible venues, but they knew they wanted a “nontraditional” feel, and decided that since they met at Carson’s, that was where they wanted the wedding to be. They knew the food would be great, and they wanted the entire Carson’s team to be a part of their day. They closed the restaurant on a Tuesday and transformed the entire place into a vision of southern elegance. “Anyone who knows me knows I love all things southern. My personal philosophy is that you can never have enough chinoiserie ginger jars, urns, wicker, or cabbage plates.” Jayme stated. She took the cabbage plates to the next level by requesting vegetables as her mainstay for flowers. She wanted a combination of her southern style and Mark’s culinary love. Florist Alexandra Pallos never hesitated to design the arrangements utilizing sweet pea and ivy, cabbages, artichokes, peppers, carrots and radishes supplied by Lindi Biles. Also making the day special was their friend Judge Lindsay Thurston officiating the wedding, as Lindsay’s calming spirit comforted them on the big day. “Lindsay ties a knot that can not be untied!” they said. Haley Michele Designs was chosen as the wedding planner, and after working side by side with Haley they knew entrusting her with the execution was the perfect choice. If there’s one tip Jayme would give to any bride no matter the budget, it would be to hire a wedding planner for their guidance and a stress-free ceremony so that you can enjoy your day!

Brooke and Jed first met in their 8th grade year at Lexington Christian Academy and spent nine years dating before getting married this past fall. They have cherished getting to watch each other grow up and sharing all of their biggest milestones with one another. Both being born and raised in Lexington, the couple has loved sharing such deep connections with their Lexington and Phillipine heritage. When meeting with their wedding planner and brainstorming the details of their big day, Brooke and Jed were stunned by the beauty of the Kentucky Castle and the different spaces they had to offer. They note that the most important reason they chose the venue was the staff they were able to work with! Both of Brooke’s parents helped bring the space to life with a handmade wooden cross at the altar and floral centerpieces at their reception. Having such personal touches truly made a world of a difference! After getting ready with their favorite people, the couple shared a private touch and shared vows with one another. They remember how calming it was to have time together alone before the big ceremony. During the ceremony, the couple was able to include the cultures that made them so unique by having Brooke’s grandfather read the scripture in English and Jed’s grandfather read the same passage in Ilocano. To couples planning their own weddings, Brooke and Jed recommend living in the moment and keep yourself from becoming too wrapped up in the stress of planning. They note how special the time is with your soon-to-be spouse and assure that everything will fall into place with the right team!

Beyond the “Four Cs” What Else You Need to Know About Selecting Your Perfect Diamond...

Everyone is familiar with the “four Cs” of diamonds: Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat. While the carat weight of diamonds is perhaps the most famous – and most obvious – it’s the other three that confuse customers the most. All four of the “Cs” affect a diamond’s value and price. The diamond industry grades every diamond in each of these four categories based on guidelines set by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). So what should you know about these four diamond qualities?

(Lack of) Color

Diamonds are meant to be colorless (with the exception of fancy, vibrantly-hued diamonds, such as a canary diamond.) A structurally perfect diamond has perfect absence of any hue. The GIA’s D-to-Z diamond color grading system measures a diamond’s degree of colorlessness. Any tinge to the diamond’s color affects the overall vibrancy and sparkle.

A Cut Above

People often use “cut” interchangeably with “shape” when referring to diamonds. Generally, when considering the value of the diamond, its shape – round, oval, pear, emerald or princess, for example – factors in less than its cut. The cut in this case refers specifically to the way a master craftsman has cut and polished the diamond to maximize its sparkle. Each unique shape has a recommended number of facets, and that plays a role in determining whether the cut is ideal or not. But in grading the cut, experts also take a look at factors such as the depth, table size, symmetry, polish and facet length. A poorlycut diamond will usually have much less sparkle and brightness than one that is rated as Very Good or Excellent. 66

I Can See Clearly Now

As a naturally-occurring stone, almost every diamond contains some small imperfections, which are referred to as inclusions. The number and visibility of these inclusions determine how the clarity of a diamond is graded.

How Do They Play Together?

Diamond artisans typically look at a rough stone and allow that to determine how it will be cut. An Ideal cut might be altered to mask some inclusions or to change the way light flows through a stone with a less-than-perfect color grade. They do all of this while creating a stone that yields the largest, most valuable diamond possible. When purchasing a diamond, your jeweler will work with your budget to find the perfect balance of the Four Cs. Your jeweler may recommend, for example, sacrificing a little color in order to get a cut that offers more fire. Or they may suggest a ring with slightly lower clarity in order to get the carat weight you desire in a more ideal cut. It’s all a balancing act!

Does the Setting Matter?

Aside from the aesthetics of the ring, the setting can greatly alter the appearance of your diamond! Solitare settings are the most traditional; they’re classic for a reason! This timeless look works for everyone, and it can be dressed up or down with wedding or anniversary bands. A three-stone setting – often representing your past, present

and future together – can enhance the center stone’s brilliance or even make it appear to have a more unusual shape. A halo setting will make your center stone appear larger or help fancy colored diamond center stones “pop.” Rings that set the diamonds up high can appear more sparkly and visually impactful while rings that set the stone lower can be more comfortable to wear and do more to protect the stone’s edges. White gold or platinum can “cool” down a warm diamond while yellow or rose gold gives the entire ring a warmer look. The band size even comes into play. A thin band will make a smaller center stone appear larger. A thicker band, however, will add gravitas to the entire ring; it brings its own sparkle to the party!

Why Shop In-Person?

No matter how much you educate yourself on the Four Cs, it’s still important to speak to a jewelry expert when selecting your diamond. Our years of experience and expertise allows us to help you choose the absolutely ideal balance of Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat weight for your budget. The differences in each grade may sound minor in theory, but it’s vital to see the stones in-person to get a sense of what the grades truly mean for your diamond. You’ll really be surprised at how much of a difference it makes! Interested in buying a diamond? Come see us. With highly skilled jewelry professionals on staff, you can rest at ease knowing you’re in good hands at Rivard Fine Jewelry. 

stationy styles One of our team's favorite things about wedding planning is the stationery, and I'm sure that many of our readers would agree. Crafting the perfect save the dates, invitations, RSVP cards, and place cards can be one of the most satisfying (and tedious) tasks a couple faces during the planning process. We've collected a handful of our favorite trends to inspire the soon-to-be spouses and design lovers. And—for the more involved crowd—we've included a tried-and-true timeline for when you should create and mail out each paper good.

Hand-Made Momentos What better way to tell people about your marriage with your favorite person than by including a few of your favorite things? We love the idea of including unique illustrations and hand-written text in your wedding stationery. Not comfortable with the idea of picking up the pen? Artists like ShopSouvenirFlowers, JennsNiceDesign, and Ten Story Stationery offer custom pieces and easy-to-use templates to make this trend even easier! Bonus points if you decorate your envelopes, too!

Die-Cut Designs We've been seeing die-cut stationery on our timelines for a while now, and for good reason! Try a wavy edge on your save the dates or coordinating shapes for your whole invitation suite. We love stacks like these from Paper Grace and Truly Engaging!

The Minimal Type Sometimes less is best. If deciding on your favorite picture is too daunting, there's nothing wrong with keeping your stationery strictly text! Pair your favorite typefaces with an eye-catching envelope liner if you want to spice things up a bit! Bonus points if you opt for letterpress from a studio like Orchard Letterpress to add the right amount of texture!

Her team guides, supports, and cheers all brides through the journey of finding THE dress from start to finish. “Our mission is to help brides navigate through the noise of what look they “think” they should have, and make the gown shopping experience part of the overall magic of their wedding day.” Chasta says.

“We want our brides to feel confident and aut hentic on t he biggest day of t heir life so t hey can lk in t he mior and see t he best vsion of t hemselves.

“Helping them to understand the options, consult on different styles and looks, and guiding them with a nopressure approach is paramount in that journey.” After building a successful bridal business back home in Tennessee, Chasta knew when it was time for her to make the “jump” and open a store where she felt the bridal experience was missing. She saw an opportunity in Lexington and it was an easy decision. Relix has one of the largest selections in the region and carries many designers that can’t be found elsewhere. The store provides a modern inviting atmosphere and the team stays in direct contact with the bride throughout the process. They view their brides as “family” and the Relix bride community consists of hundreds of customers that stay in touch through social media.

Chasta finds inspiration through the bridal community and other wedding boutiques around the world. Relix Bridal is part of the White Dress Society; which allows each member to communicate often and lift each other up. When not minding the shop, Chasta is busy raising her daughter Emmerson and two Doodle boys, Ryder & Tuxe. She embraces a healthy, balanced lifestyle and strives to live a “simple” life. She recognizes that starting or owning a business is all about hard work and taking a lot of time and effort to build the vision and plan it out. Doing the homework necessary and understanding the market is also key. Most importantly, figuring out what consumers are asking for is critical. Well, this business owner certainly does what it takes and it shows every day!

When Allie’s family moved to Kentucky from upstate New York during her 3rd grade year, she quickly began falling in love with the south. It wasn’t until a Super Bowl party years later that she would begin to fall in love with longtime classmate Nick. Since officially meeting, the couple has grown to cherish Kentucky and southern hospitality, fall in the Bluegrass, Keeneland meets, bourbon trails, and an abundance of other things that make this state unique and wonderful! When Allie and Scott first began planning their wedding, they decided to plan their ceremony’s decor around a custom-made wooden cross with draping florals and a huge floral chandelier by Drury Florals. With those things in mind, the Apiary made perfect sense as their venue with its unique atmosphere, absolutely stunning outdoor gardens, high attention to detail, and quality of food. That being said, they wish they would have started the ceremony a bit earlier in the day so they could have avoided the extra butterflies that came with anticipating the ceremony and reception that awaited them. One of the couple’s most cherished moments was their choice to have a private dinner right after the ceremony in a separate space from the rest of the party. Having a moment to be present and soak in the moment together made the day much more intimate, while still allowing them to spend time with their closest friends and family! Allie also notes that having an incredible live band, like Honeychild, is incredibly important for getting guests up dancing and singing along and keeping everyone’s energy high all night long. To other couples planning their own weddings, the couple recommends “to truly be present and take it all in!” and cannot recommend enough to have a day-of coordinator to make sure everything stays organized and keep stress off of the couple’s closest family members and friends.

Four years after Nicholasville couple Bailee and Liam started dating, he popped the question by her grandparents’ pond, bringing one of her childhood dreams to life. The duo— longtime friends from high school—was brought back together during the pandemic and quickly became inseparable. They love to spend their time going to Boyd’s Orchard in the fall, cheering on the Cats at Kroger Field, and watching the races at Keeneland. The couple even chose to take pre-ceremony photos on the Keeneland grounds to commemorate one of their favorite places! When it came time to plan their wedding, the couple knew they wanted to incorporate huge pine trees and lots of candles to bring the magic of winter in Kentucky indoors. In order to save guests from traveling between their ceremony and reception, the couple opted for local venue The Grand Reserve. “When we first walked into the Grand Reserve, it really gave us that ‘Aha!’ moment that you want to feel for your special day!” remembers Bailee. Between having their first look in private to getting to spend an entire day with their closest friends and family members, Bailee and Liam say there isn’t a single thing they would change about their wedding day! One special touch they included was a table featuring photos of family members that had passed. They say that being able to honor and remember those people gave them extra peace in knowing they were being looked out for on their special day. The couple notes that their wedding wouldn’t have been nearly as much of a success without such incredible and reliable vendors. Having a group of people that communicate well with every party made things much smoother and stress-free. To couples planning their own weddings, they recommend hiring a team that has experience and a planner to help you manage day-of details!

The Dress Code you are cordially invited.. now what ? BY CHLOE DAY

86

TOPS | February 2024

W E DDI N G S

white tie

What it Means:

Though the most uncommon dress code, white tie can be the most exciting (and most daunting) of all! Plan to dress as if you're royalty for the evening, with a full-length gown, heels, your favorite jewels, and silk gloves. Men are typically expected to wear a full tuxedo (complete with long tails) and black patent leather shoes.

black tie

What it Means:

If your invitation calls for black tie attire, picture what someone might wear to a gala. Women are encouraged to wear floor-length gowns and heels. Not comfortable walking with the extra height? Go ahead, opt for a dressy flat, we won't mind! Men are typically still expected to wear a tuxedo for this dress code style, preferably the standard black and white look.

formal

What it Means: Formal attire is possibly the most common dress code for indoor weddings. Also referred to as black tie optional, this refers to a look one step down from black tie. Floor-length dresses are still an option, but picking a classy cocktail dress won't make you look underdressed. Men get the better end of the deal here, too: tuxedos are great, but any dark suit will do!

cocktail

What it Means: Cocktail attire is easily one of the most flexible options for dress code. Whether you pick a short dress or matching set, you really can't go wrong here. Avoid sundresses and wrap dresses for this look. Men are expected to wear some kind of tailored suit, but a tie isn't required!

semi-formal What it Means:

For semi-formal – or "dressy casual" – look for a more relaxed version of a cocktail dress! We love midi or wrap dresses and elegant jumpsuits. Men will fit right in wearing a light sport jacket, button-down shirt, and chinos. Base your attire's color scheme on the time of day the ceremony takes place, as an evening wedding is more apt for a darker-colored look!

casual

What it Means: You should feel comfortable in your outfit for casual weddings. However, shorts, tee shirts, and flip-flops aren't going to cut it. A cute sundress and sandals or espadrilles is perfect for women, and men should rock a polo shirt and khakis.

A Legacy Continues...

L.V. Harkness Enters a New Generation of Beautiful Memories L.V. Harkness has been a Lexington mainstay for nearly 24 years since Meg Jewett founded the fine gift store named after her great-grandfather, Lamon Vanderburg Harkness. She grew up in the house he built, surrounded by interesting and unique items he would collect from his travels overseas. He ventured around the world on his yacht, the Wakiva, and would often buy amazing things from the different places he visited and bring them to his home in Lexington.

Meg’s offer was the perfect opportunity, and it’s been a whirlwind ever since.

His collections sparked within Meg a love of fine china, crystal, sculptures, and beautiful things handmade by artisans around the globe. She wanted to create a space where she could showcase all of these exquisite items and share her love for them, along with the beauty she found in them.

“People can sometimes think that a luxury and fine gift store isn’t for them, but we truly aim to have something for everyone,” Jennifer says.

Meg’s son, Harky Jewett, along with his wife Jennifer and their two sons, moved to Lexington from Los Angeles in September of 2023. They knew that one day they would move back here so that Harky could take over the family’s horse farm operations, but the plan was to wait until their boys were older. A recent health scare for Meg prompted them to make the move earlier than expected, and they’ve loved calling Lexington their home ever since. Meg Jewett is healthy now but decided it was time for her to step away from the day-to-day operations at the store; she asked Jennifer if she would be interested in taking over. Jennifer is no stranger to owning a business, as she was successful in her own right in Los Angeles as a chef and the owner of a school lunch delivery company specializing in wholesome to-go meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. When they decided to move to Lexington, she was uncertain as to what she would do;

Jennifer is continuing to build on the great relationships her mother-in-law started years ago, allowing her to bring a variety of amazing brands that no one else carries. She’s also using her own experience to introduce many new and fun brands to the store to enhance the shopping experience. L.V. Harkness will soon become a one-stop location for all things home and personal.

Jennifer’s inspiration comes not only from Meg but also from her dear friend Kevin Luzande, a chef she worked with in L.A. who motivated his team on a daily basis. “In the professional kitchen world, we always want to ‘work clean’ and have our ‘mise en place on point.’ This means that you want to be well organized and have all of your tools and ingredients prepared and in place. It’s a philosophy I carry with me to all professional areas,” Jennifer explains. “At the store, being prepared and wellorganized just makes the experience for our customers that much better. I am definitely bringing this philosophy to our showroom as well, so our customers do not feel overwhelmed and can more easily take in the space and the beautiful items we carry.” Jennifer is deeply devoted to her two sons and wants to ensure they are acclimating well to their new surroundings while soaking up culture – and fun. Lexington has become a place she and her family love, from their first true “fall” weather to UK football and basketball games. They’re looking forward to exploring Lexington and the entire central Kentucky area.

These days, technology makes things easier and more convenient, but also disposable. It’s nice to have things that are “permanent” and which encourage us to slow down just a little bit and take a pause. Whether it’s something like a luxurious bath towel that you can’t wait to envelope yourself in after a morning shower or a set of fine porcelain dinner plates that make you want to throw an incredible dinner party, these are the things that change the world around you. L.V. Harkness strives to find items that are not only beautiful and exceptionally well made but also have a story behind them, as well as a history. They believe it’s not just about these beautiful things, but the people and stories behind them, and the way they help us all connect with those we love and cherish in our own lives. Makeup Tips

your momma

Got Wrong...

There are some tried-and-true things we learned from our mommas, from the magical power of cold cream to the timeless power of a bold, red lip. But there are some makeup tips our moms gave us that are simply… wrong. Whether it’s outdated advice or “helpful tips” that are quite questionable, here are some of momma’s “words of wisdom” we think you can safely forget. by Amanda Harper

Foundation goes right onto your bare skin. A good moisturizing primer is your makeup BFF. It prevents foundation from settling into fine lines while helping your makeup last longer. We won’t judge momma too much; primers are a relatively recent addition to everyone’s makeup bags.

Pencil those brows in a little darker... and higher! Your brow shape, color and definition should always work with the architecture of your face and your personal style. There’s really no one size fits all advice for brows that anyone can give – not even old Hollywood screen sirens. Today’s brows are favoring a much more natural look, so if you are looking to change up your look, start with the brows.

Skip the rouge or you’ll end up looking like a tart! There’s nothing wrong with wearing blush. It’s a step that helps your overall look really come to life. Pick a shade that works with your skin tone and undertone, then apply it according to your face shape. And if you want to look a little tarty? We won’t judge. Try a shade that’s just a bit deeper than your usual blush.

Blush goes onto the apples of your cheeks. You should apply blush based on your face shape... and for some people, this advice will hold true! But for the majority of us, it’s not quite right. Folks with rounder faces absolutely should put blush on the apples of their cheeks, blending the edge up towards the temple and down toward the earlobe. Heart-shaped faces sport the current trend of “C-shape” blush well, which sweeps from your cheekbones up to your temple. Oblong and oval faces can hit the apples of their cheeks and blend outward toward the ear, then add a little on the sides of the brow. Square-shaped faces sport blush best when it’s applied all over the cheekbone up toward the corner of the brow – add a delicate swipe down the sides of your nose.

Separate your lashes with a safety pin. Do we even need to explain why this is so wrong? There are eye-safe tools specifically designed to fix clumpy mascara – use those, for heaven’s sake!

There’s no need to clean your makeup stuff ! Though many makeup products and tools are somewhat resistant to germs – for a while – it’s inevitable that products that you put on your face almost every day eventually get a bit grody. All products have expiration timelines to follow upon opening; these timelines exist to let you know when it begins to be susceptible to bacteria and mold! If you have any concerns about your products or you ever share them, learn how to sanitize after use.

Cleaning your makeup tools regularly is very important. Aside from preventing breakouts and infections, this will also ensure a clean makeup application free of muddy leftovers from previous applications.

Finish off with powder. Most folks these days finish up a face of makeup with a setting spray, which helps extend the wear of the products – including powder. Some folks skip an allover powder and prefer to wrap up with a highlighter or blush. Depending on your makeup routine, you may not even use any powder products at all – and that’s okay! Dewy looks are very in right now.

White eyeliner on your waterline will make your eyes appear larger. The idea is that this will make the whites of your eyes look bigger. That’s great, but the whites of your eyes aren’t actually that white, so the effect that this “trick” has is a bit off-putting. Instead, try an eyeliner that’s a soft peach. This is more subtle, yet offers that eye-brightening effect you’re going for. Then again, your optometrist probably wishes you would stop tightlining your eyes altogether. It’s okay for rare special occasions, but putting product on your waterline can block the glands along your lashline, causing dry eyes – among other complications.

Only highlight one area. The old wisdom was that a bold lip with bold eye makeup would be too much. And we agree – if there’s a ton of contrast in your products. Today’s makeup allows for an all-over dramatic look so long as the colors are cohesive. So if you’re doing a bold berry lip, use those berry tones in your blush and eyeshadow.

Makeup should always enhance – and hide your flaws. Define “enhance” or even “flaws” for us, won’t you? Sure, you want to put your best face forward, but beauty is entirely subjective. Makeup should be about expressing yourself. If you want to play up your assets, go right ahead. Just shake off any makeup “rules” that focus on negatives and have fun instead! •

Momma doesn’t always know best. February 2024 | TOPS

FITNESS & EXERCISES

TOPS | Sponsored Content

In the perpetual quest for achieving weight loss goals, we often find ourselves searching for the most effective and efficient exercises to expedite our fitness journey. While a healthy diet and regular physical activity is crucial for sustainable weight loss, certain exercises have gained prominence for their ability to accelerate the process. Here’s a look at the kinds of exercises that experts believe can expedite weight loss.

HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (HIIT)

High-Intensity Interval Training, commonly known as HIIT, has risen to the forefront of the fitness world due to its effectiveness in burning calories and boosting metabolism. HIIT involves short bursts of intense exercises followed by brief periods of rest. This type of workout not only burns calories during the exercise, but also continues to do so even after the session, known as the afterburn effect or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC).

STRENGTH TRAINING

Building lean muscle mass is a key component of weight loss, as muscles burn more calories at rest than fat tissue. Incorporating strength training exercises, such as weightlifting or bodyweight exercises, into a fitness routine can help increase metabolism and contribute to a more efficient fat-burning process. Additionally, strength training promotes overall body toning and improves body composition.

CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISES

Traditional cardiovascular exercises, including running, cycling, and swimming, remain effective in expediting weight loss. These activities elevate heart rate, burn calories, and improve cardiovascular health. Engaging in moderate to high-intensity cardio workouts for at least 150 minutes per week, as recommended by health authorities, can lead to significant weight loss when combined with a balanced diet.

COMPOUND EXERCISES

Compound exercises target multiple muscle groups simultaneously, making them highly efficient for calorie burning and overall strength improvement. Examples of compound exercises include squats, deadlifts, and lunges. These exercises engage large muscle groups, stimulating the metabolism and promoting fat loss.

CORE WORKOUTS

A strong core is essential for stability and balance, and targeted core exercises can aid in achieving a toned midsection. Incorporating exercises like planks, crunches, and leg raises can help strengthen the abdominal muscles and contribute to a more defined waistline.

MIND-BODY EXERCISES

Stress management plays a crucial role in weight loss, and mind-body exercises such as yoga and Pilates can be beneficial. These exercises not only contribute to physical well-being but also promote mental relaxation, reducing stress and emotional eating.

WHICH KIND OF EXERCISE IS BEST?

Whichever kind you enjoy the most and will do on a consistent basis. If you love swimming, do that. If you only have a few minutes a week to exercise, try HIIT or strength training since you can spend less time on these and still see results. While these exercises can expedite weight loss, it’s important to note that a comprehensive approach is essential. Pairing regular physical activity with a balanced and nutritious diet, adequate hydration, and sufficient sleep will optimize the chances of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Before starting any new exercise regimen, it is advised to consult with healthcare professionals or fitness experts to ensure that the chosen activities are suitable for their specific health conditions and fitness levels.

Smell Like a Jammy Croissant Snif Crumb Couture ($65)

We don’t see that slowing down any time soon. In fact, perfume houses are getting more creative to cater to the ever-widening interest of consumers, bringing out new scents that will suit just about any sniffer.

Moody Fragrances

There’s an uptick in brands creating a vibe with their fragrances. Rare Beauty just launched a line of body and hair mists designed to help you find calm and comfort. On the flip side, Phlur just launched Mood Ring, a bright, zesty scent designed to help you feel happy. Look for orange, golden amber and patchouli.

Avant Gourmands

From Snif’s buttery croissant scent, Crumb Couture, to the popular Yum Pistachio Gelato from Kayali, foodie scents had a big moment in 2023. This year, look for perfumers to take it even further; think savory notes, breads and photorealistic desserts. Rhubarb and lychee are buzzy notes.

Body Mists

With the increased interest in perfume comes a reckoning with the cost of a wide collection of scents. Body mists are less concentrated versions of the scents you love, making them more affordable – and more wearable for a quick spray after the gym.

Updated Florals

Florals have gotten a bit stale for many consumers, and perfume houses have taken note. They’re updating classic floral notes in unexpected ways, adding modern twists to traditional fragrances. Iris, in particular, seems to be having a revival.

Your Skin, But Better

Inspired by Your Birthday Suit... by/rosie jane Rosie ($75)

Not every perfume needs to announce itself when you walk into a room. More intimate, subtle scents are gaining traction for everyday wear. These are striking for their impression that you naturally smell amazing – not your perfume. Notes like musk, cashmere, Iso E/Gamma Super and dry woods give this stunning impression.

Why Unisex? Unisex and gender-neutral beauty products have very much been on-trend lately. While this may seem like a fad designed to cater to Gen Z, it’s actually an exciting opportunity to try something new in your beauty routine – and maybe even share with your partner! So why should you go with unisex beauty products?

Boy Smells Woodphoria ($98)

The Dreaded Pink Tax

It’s long been shown that products marketed specifically towards women tend to be more expensive. That may not seem like a big deal if ingredients are better, but this is not always the case; in fact, the products are often essentially identical while product volume may be lower with smaller packaging. And the hit to your pocket rings in at around a 7% markup – in a year, that's a lotta bucks.

Earthy & Mysterious DIOR Gris Dior ($330)

Men’s Products Can Be Lacking

Products marketed exclusively towards men can fail to address some of the specific skin and haircare needs you’re hoping to address. The idea that one product is sufficient for your face, underarms, butt, feet and hair is just ludicrous. And more often than not, they come in “masculine” scents like “Swiss Pine” and “I Just Wrassled a Tiger.” If those aren’t your jam… well, too bad.

Fragrance is For Everyone

The recent boom in niche fragrances has shown that we’re all gravitating towards more interesting perfumes and colognes. While Chanel No. 5 and Creed Aventus will always be classics, we’re all adding more scents to our lineups. Unisex fragrance products offer a whole new world of scent exploration that isn’t hemmed in by the traditional notes (Baccarat Rouge 540 is a great example!)

Floral & Surprising Le Labo Lavande 31 ($230)

Myth: Skin Care Isn't “Manly”

Fun fact: one survey found that nearly two-thirds of men think women's skin is more sensitive to UV rays... so therefore, only women need sunscreen. Less fun fact: the opposite is actually true, and men are putting their health at risk. Let's normalize men taking care of their skin – and health – okay?

COMMONWEALTH PLASTICS Dr. Jared Nimtz High-definition liposuction allows us to really contour close to the skin, sculpting the body to reveal the muscles below.

HOW DOES HIGH-DEFINITION DIFFER?

Using high-definition liposuction with Vaser liposuction, I am able to get some skin tightening not available with traditional liposuction equipment. Vaser Liposuction adds ultrasound energy, removing fat through a gentler suction process. This allows for smoother contours with less pain and recovery time than traditional liposuction.

CAN YOU COMBINE HIGH-DEFINITION LIPOSUCTION WITH OTHER PROCEDURES?

I often combine this technique with Renuvion, or J Plasma. Renuvion adds heat energy to the underlying tissue, causing it to constrict and tighten. Renuvion with Vaser is a great option for patients who have excess fat and loose skin needing tightening, but who have fairly good skin quality. When I combine Vaser liposuction with body contouring procedures like a tummy tuck, I can offer more precise sculpting below the skin, revealing muscles or an hourglass shape. We can even add Renuvion to a facelift, arm lift or thigh lift for more skin tightening.

WHAT IS RECOVERY FOR LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction typically requires one to two weeks of downtime depending upon the area and the amount of liposuction. By 4-6 weeks out from your surgery, you should be able to go back to exercise and full normal activity with your surgeon’s evaluation and approval. Your final contour should be visible 3-4 months from the date of surgery.

Dopamine Décor

the latest design trend: to use what you love... no matter what.

In recent years, design trends have favored a “use everything you like” approach, mixing styles to achieve an overall look that is entirely unique. While this has taken many forms – from “grandmillennial” style to maximalist mayhem – designers are referring to this approach simply as “dopamine décor.” Dopamine is a chemical messenger that tells your brain that you feel good. How on earth would that relate to decorating your home? Pretty directly, actually! by Amanda Harper

Your home’s style and all the things in it should, ideally, inspire good vibes. But getting stuck in a certain interior design lane can sometimes mean you’re bringing in furniture, fabrics or accessories that fit the overall look, but which you might not exactly love. How many times have you found yourself looking for a lamp (for example), only to settle on something that works for the space or “matches.” That lamp you ended up getting probably wasn’t the most exciting one you saw during your search. You probably saw several that virtually made you light up inside, but they were the “wrong” color, size or style. Dopamine décor would tell you: those are the lamps you really should’ve bought! The dopamine décor creed is that you should furnish your home in ways that make you feel good… regardless of what’s on trend, or what conventional style would dictate. We admit that, at least for people who don’t have a very narrow aesthetic, subscribing fully to the dopamine décor method would probably result in visual chaos. But letting yourself be steered by this kind of joy generally creates an atmosphere of playfulness where whimsy can breathe.

Do it Yourself:

CORTNEY BISHOP DESIGN

Keep it Personal

No one else can tell you how you want to feel in your home. While the dopamine décor method’s name suggests feeling good, only you know exactly what that means to you. Maybe you want to feel calm and cozy… or perhaps you want to feel like a kid in a candy store! Keep that exact feeling in mind as you select each element of your space.

Decide on a Color Scheme While this method encourages you to be playful, you still have to start with a visual theme. Begin with a neutral and a bold hue you love, along with a pattern that incorporates both colors but offers you a jumping-off point for incorporating more hues. This gives you a firm design foundation.

Shop Your Home Like Marie Kondo, we suggest evaluating your belongings one by one to see if they give you the feeling that you are after. If a piece doesn’t quite fit, that doesn’t mean it must go; instead, reevaluate it in context once you’ve made changes to see if it works. If it’s still not working for you, try it in another room. A side table that feels out of place in your dopaminedecorated living room might find new life in your guest room, for instance.

HOUSE BEAUTIFUL

ELLE DÉCOR

Get Nostalgic One way to bring good feelings into your home is to feature pieces that remind you of good memories. Wallpaper that reminds you of the hotel where you spent your honeymoon, an armchair that reminds you of a family vacation to New Orleans, curtains that remind you of your grandmother… these little touches make a space personal and infuse it with happiness, everywhere you look.

Feel Like a Kid Again More and more people are embracing their inner child through décor. Think about what you dreamed your home would look like when you were a kid. While some details won’t work – that life-sized portrait of the New Kids on the Block you imagined would probably be regrettable – you can still emulate elements of that in your design. Let childlike whimsy guide your choices and you’ll be smiling in no time!

Be Thoughtful It’s easy to assume that dopamine décor encourages you to buy everything that strikes your fancy. But in actuality, it encourages you to be much more mindful of your purchases. Take your time and reflect on everything you consider bringing into your home. Does it spark the emotion you wish your space to evoke? Is it filling a particular need, or is it just a fun whim? And most importantly, is it something you will love a year from now? •

MUDROOMS You Can LOVE Winter in Kentucky is beautiful. It’s also wet, muddy and icy with salt everywhere you step. Even if you’re not a believer in the power of mudrooms the rest of the year, wintertime will convince you that they’re a necessity. Many people are hesitant to commit space to mudrooms because they can seem like a one-trick pony. Sure, it would be nice to have a place to set everything down and take off your boots, but most folks are fine making do with an entryway bench and a prayer. But mudrooms can do so much for your home. We’ll give you some ideas to make your mudroom a space you can truly love.

Tidy Up The mudroom function that everyone is most familiar with: keeping things tidy. A smart cabinet system can help you keep so many things in order, from your kids’ backpacks to towels for the pool. Think of it as the place to store all the items you tend to grab on your way out the door and dump as soon as you come inside. But instead of that spot being right by your front door or your kitchen island, it’s now its own, orderly space.

Designer Dreams Locker System Inspired to use bold colors and patterns, but shy to take it throughout your whole home? Mudrooms can be a fun way to experiment without a big commitment.

Give every member of your family their very own cubby in your mudroom. This will help keep things organized – and make chore assignments easier!

Small Space We get that not every floorplan has an extra room to spare. A smart closet system can make even the smallest of spaces into a multifunctional mudroom. This unit makes use of an area that was previously just wasted space. Now, it serves as a command center for the entire family. That’s smart design! CLOSET FACTORY

Pet Project

Dog owners know that muddy paws and wet fur are the natural enemy of domestic bliss. If you love your pooch but hate the mess, then mudrooms are here to save the day. The cabinets can store all of your pet necessities, from leashes and squeaky toys to those 20-pound bags of dog food you’ve been (inconveniently) storing in the garage. Many homeowners set up doggie spas in their mudrooms so they can hose off Rover before he gets on the couch. But even just having a spot for towels so you can wipe off those paws will feel like a godsend. • ELLEN KAVANAUGH

S d ke a B Eggs 1 c. salsa verde 4 large eggs 1/4 c. cotija 1/4 c. fresh cilantro leaves 2 radishes, thinly sliced Warmed tortillas 4 lime wedges (optional)

Preheat oven to 400F. Grease a 10” ovenproof skillet. Pour salsa into the skillet. Press the back of a spoon gently into the salsa to create a wide indentation, then crack an egg into that indentation (this helps keep the eggs separated); repeat for remaining three eggs. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

1/2 loaf sliced white bread, cubed 1 lb. bulk pork sausage 10 oz. sharp Cheddar, grated 2 c. half-and-half 1 tsp. dry mustard 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper 5 large eggs, lightly beaten

Grease the inside of a 9x13” casserole dish. Spread the cubed white bread in the bottom. In a medium skillet, brown the sausage until fully cooked, separating as you stir. Remove the sausage with a slotted spoon, allowing to drain. Spread over bread. Top with shredded cheese.

Bake about 12 minutes, or until egg whites are no longer transparent; cook longer if you desire egg yolks that are more set.

In a bowl, whisk together half-and-half, dry mustard, salt, pepper and eggs. Pour mixture over cheese.

Sprinkle cotija over the eggs. Top with cilantro and radishes. Serve with tortillas and lime wedges on the side. (adapted from The Modern Proper)

Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.

Notes: This works just as well with traditional red salsa, though we think salsa verde agrees with our tummies a bit more early in the morning. If you’d like to add a protein, sautée mushrooms or brown crumbled chorizo until fully cooked and add them hot at the end. This is also great topped with drained, cooked chickpeas or piping hot, crispy home fries.

Cheesy Hashbrown Skillet 4 1/2 T butter, divided 2 T olive oil 3 c. frozen, shredded potatoes 1/2 c. white cheddar, shredded 3 large eggs 1 T chopped chives

Preheat oven to 375˚F. Warm a cast iron skillet in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove skillet and add 2 T butter and the oil, moving the skillet to coat the entire surface. Add shredded potatoes in an even layer. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Use the back of a spoon to create 3 indentations into the potatoes. Sprinkle surface of potatoes with shredded cheese, avoiding the indentations if possible. Crack an egg into each indentation. Return to oven. Bake until egg whites are set and yolks are creamy, but potatoes are golden, around 9 minutes. Sprinkle with chives. Serve with toasted bread. (adapted from Spoon Fork Bacon)

PREPARE DOUGH: Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in the butter until crumbly mixture forms. In a small bowl, whisk together milk, egg, vanilla and almond extract. Pour over dry ingredients and mix until just evenly moistened.

Roll remaining dough into an 8” round. Place on top of filling, pressing down gently. Place in freezer while you preheat oven to 375°F. Gently flip dough onto parchment paper. Remove cake pan and plastic wrap. Divide into eight equal wedges and separate wedges slightly. Transfer parchment paper to baking sheet. Bake 30-33 minutes, or until golden broken. Remove to a wire rack and allow to cool for 10 minutes while you prepare glaze. PREPARE GLAZE: Stir together powdered sugar, vanilla and enough heavy cream to make a glaze that’s thin enough to brush onto the tops of the warm scones. While the glaze is still tacky, sprinkle with color sugars (purple, green and yellow/gold are traditional.) (adapted from King Arthur Baking/Susan Reid)

1 tsp. salt 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 2 c. all-purpose flour 2 T sugar 2 eggs, separated (see notes) 2 c. buttermilk 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 2 T butter, melted and slightly cooled (plus more for cooking) In a large bowl, whisk salt, baking powder, baking soda, flour and sugar until combined. In a medium bowl, add egg yolks, buttermilk, vanilla and butter; mix until combined. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients. In a small bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. Fold in egg whites until just combined. Let sit for around 10 minutes while you heat skillet over medium heat (or heat non-stick griddle to 300°F). If using a skillet, add around 1T butter to skillet before each pancake, and allow to melt completely. Scoop around 1/3 c. batter into skillet or onto griddle. Cook until bubbles form around the perimeter and a few appear in middle, around 3 minutes; flip and cook 2-3 minutes more, or until done. (adapted from Salt & Baker) Notes: When we tested this recipe, we found that the pancakes were plenty fluffy if you skipped beating the egg whites, though they took a bit longer to cook; if you go this route, lightly beat the eggs and add them with the wet ingredients as you did the egg yolks. But beating the egg whites resulted in some of the fluffiest pancakes we’ve ever eaten, so it’s worth the effort!

KI TC HE N CULTURE

CAVIAR DREAMS Caviar is having something of a revival. While this delicacy has long been available at high-end grocers, it’s increasingly accessible online. Rather than being a stuffy nibble at posh parties, caviar is becoming a “treat yourself” weekday snack. You probably know caviar is made up of salt-cured roe – or fish eggs, to the layperson. You probably also know it’s pretty pricy. But what else should you know about this wonderful little luxury? Technically speaking, true caviar refers to sturgeon roe, though “caviar” is now harvested from other fish species. You’ve probably had salmon roe on sushi. The cost of caviar can vary wildly. Premium caviar comes from select fish; the price goes up and down based on the rarity of the fish, the amount of caviar each fish can produce and the taste of the caviar itself. The labor required to extract and grade the caviar is also a factor in cost. The declining population of sturgeon species has greatly contributed to the price of caviar in recent years. Overharvesting of sturgeon roe means fewer sturgeons

144

TOPS | February 2024

are hatched; unsustainable fishing practices have also caused a decline in their numbers. It’s essential to understand how your caviar was produced. What does caviar taste like? Almost all varieties maintain a taste of seawater, but it shouldn’t taste fishy at all; good caviar offers an unexpected nutty butteriness. As you expect, the roe slips and slides around in your mouth and bursts with flavor. Never eat caviar directly from a metal spoon, as it can alter your perception of the taste (though it’s fine to use metal or silver for spreading). Instead, eat caviar from spoons made of wood, bone or plastic. Better yet, sample your caviar on blinis or crackers! It pairs well with other fresh seafood and brut champagne – perfect for a romantic date night. Caviar is delicate and highly perishable. Store it in the coldest area of your refrigerator, typically in the back and near the bottom. Unopened caviar generally lasts up to 3 weeks; once opened, caviar is best when consumed within 24 hours. • by Amanda Harper

ONIONS I N SE A SO N

Make no mistake: no onions are being harvested outdoors anywhere close to us in the month of February. So why are they considered “in season” this time of year? Onions are fine when just harvested. But you may have noticed that the skin is soft and not at all papery like the onions you get at the grocery store. That’s because onions have to be stored a while to develop an exterior that makes them more fit for transport. This process is known as “curing.” A side-effect of the curing process is that the flavors deepen, losing some of the sweetness that a garden-fresh onion offers. So, in February, you’ll want to cook your onions to temper some of that pungent flavor.

KNOW YOUR ONION: Burpee

Rare Seeds

Yellow Onion

These are the most versatile onions, and most widely available. If a recipe doesn’t specify what type of onion to use, you can safely assume they mean a yellow onion.

Eden Brothers

Sweet Onions

With a lower concentration of sulfur, these onions are the sweetest of the bunch. Vidalia, Walla Walla and Maui are popular varieties. Sweet onions are great for making onion rings!

Urban Farmer

Eden Brothers

Red Onion

These onions have a sharper flavor profile, but their signature beautiful look that makes them a popular choice for salads and garnishes. These are a wonderful option for pickling.

Burpee

Burpee

Scallions

Also known as green onions, you’ll be enjoying the long stems more often than the bulbs, which most people reserve for stock. Use these as you would other herbs for a savory kick.

Johnny’s Selected Seeds

Cipollini

These squat Italian onions are what makes all the difference in a great red sauce, as they’re less acrid than yellow onions. They’re also great grilled, roasted or creamed. Buon appetito!

White Onion

As the name suggests, these have a pale flesh. Sweeter and more balanced than yellow and red onions, these are popular for finishing Latin and Central American dishes.

Pearl Onions

These little cocktail onions have a sweet, delicate flavor. Pickled or creamed, these always make a lovely side dish. And to answer your question, no, they’re not just baby onions. (haha)

Shallots

These small onions have a sweet, mild flavor yet are surprisingly pungent. These are popular in French and Asian dishes. You can use these in lieu of other onions, but not the other way around.

Burpee

Leeks

These are actually a member of the onion and garlic family! They have a sweet, oniony taste. The stalks are what you’ll use in most recipes. Reserve the tough green leaves for vegetable stock.

Mixed Onion Agrodolce

Pastry crust, unbaked 1 c. Gruyere, shredded 1 1/2 tsp. fresh thyme 2 tsp. fresh chives, minced 1 1/4 lbs. sweet onions, thinly sliced 1 T heavy cream 2 T unsalted butter, diced 1 tsp. salt

5 T butter, divided 6 shallots, halved and trimmed 10 oz. cipollini onions, halved and trimmed 2 tsp. garlic, chopped 2 T dry sherry 1 15oz. pkg. frozen pearl onions, thawed and patted dry 1/3 c. sherry vinegar 1/3 c. white wine vinegar 1/4 c. honey 1 T thyme 1 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 c. pitted prunes, quartered

Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. If necessary, roll the pastry dough between two sheets of lightly flour waxed paper. Form into a roughly 10x14” rectangle, trimming the edges as needed. Place the dough onto the prepared sheet pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes. Working right to the edges, sprinkle the dough with the cheese, thyme and chives. Top with onions, creating a pattern, if desired (see notes). Brush onions with heavy cream. Evenly sprinkle with butter and salt. Bake for 40 minutes, or until tart is golden brown. Cut into squares and serve. (adapted from What Should I Make For) Notes: If desired, cut the onions into half moons, keeping the slices together. Place the little half moons in diagonal lines, just overlapping.

Add sherry to skillet. Scrape bottom to loosen any browned bits. Add pearl onions to skillet along with vinegars, honey, thyme, salt and 3 T butter. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-high. Simmer for about 4 minutes, stirring frequently. Add prunes and simmer 2 minutes, or until onions are lightly glazed. (adapted from Food & Wine) •

Remembering Music Legend

Les McCann BY KATE SAVAGE

Les McCann (September 23, 1935 – December 29, 2023), was an American jazz pianist and vocalist. Les was born and brought up in Lexington, the son of James McCann, a water company engineer and his wife Anna who was a homemaker. He and grew up in a musical family and all four of his younger brothers and his sister sang in the Shiloh Baptist Church choir. “Everybody was in a position of doing the best they could with whatever,” he recalled in a 2015 interview with Red Bull Music Academy. “We never thought of ourselves as being poor.” Les started to play the piano as a three-year old. He explained that with limited resources and apart from some piano lessons he received for only a few weeks as a six-yearold before his teacher (who charged 35 cents a lesson) died, he was almost entirely self-taught. While attending Dunbar High School he played drums and sousaphone in the marching band, and at age 17 left to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He would tell the story about hearing Erroll Garner’s recording of “Lullaby of Birdland” during his service, and having the sudden realization that the piano was his calling. McCann first gained some fame while he was stationed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1956 when he won a talent contest in the Navy as a vocalist. A success that resulted in an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show that same year.

After his discharge he formed a piano trio and found work backing Gene McDaniels at the Purple Onion Jazz Club in San Francisco and then going on tour with them. After this he moved to Los Angeles where he studied music and journalism at Los Angeles City college and hosted a Monday night jam session at the Hillcrest Club. It was while Les was performing in one of the LA clubs that a representative of Pacific Jazz Records heard him and asked if he had a record contract. When Les told him no, the representative pulled one from his pocket and offered it to him. McCann went on to record more than a dozen albums for this label from 1960-1964 and gained some fame with his albums Les McCann Plays the Truth and The Shout. Although McCann was a skilled modern jazz pianist, brought up in the bebop era, the defining character of his music was his love of the blues and the gospel music he had absorbed during his childhood in the Baptist church, a subgenre that went on to become known as gospel jazz or soul jazz.

“The president, he’s got his war / Folks just don’t know what it’s for / Nobody gives us rhyme or reason / Have one doubt, they call it treason.” The song was released as a single and would peak at No.35 on the Billboard R&B Chart. Swiss Movement was nominated for a Grammy Award and went on to sell a half-million copies. Lexington’s Chester Grundy, who for many years ran the Spotlight Jazz Series, and knew Les, booking him several times as an act at The Lyric Theatre, said of this song, “It just resonated with people, it became like an anthem, a critique of social and political conditions at the time.” The song remained a calling card for McCann the rest of his musical career. He went on to produce many more successful albums.

His breakthrough moment came in 1969 at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Already by then a recording veteran, with albums on Pacific Jazz, Limelight and more recently the Atlantic label, McCann was nevertheless appearing at the festival for the first time. He gave a semi-impromptu performance co-leading a quintet with the saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Bailey joining halfway through the set. Neither had performed with McCann before and there had been no time for rehearsal. By happenstance the performance was recorded and filmed on the fly by the event’s sound engineers.

In 2008 McCann was inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame.

Atlantic Records released the set as an album under the title Swiss Movement, and an eight-minute track called

He died of pneumonia in a hospital in Los Angeles on December 29, 2023. •

In 1975 Les McCann became the first artist in residence at Harvard University’s Learning from Performers program. He was also known to be a painter and photographer of jazz and black history. His work was collected in 2015 in the book Invitation to Openness: The and Soul Photography of Les McCann 1960-1980.

“Compared to What” was singled out for radio exposure. The tune struck a cultural nerve at the time, addressing in plainspeak the greed, religious hypocrisy and the disaster of the Vietnam war. McCann’s own singing had previously taken second place to his keyboard work, but about two minutes into the set he delivered the powerful lyrics with what was described as “a soulful holler, and a combination of soulful passion with a sardonic edge”.

Be who you are and not who you ain’t. Because when you are who you ain’t, you’re not who you are. - Les McCann TOPS | February 2024

By Larry Vaught When Tre Mitchell saw his mother, Erin Tortorice at the Kentucky basketball women’s clinic, he immediately stopped what he was doing to hug her. “I hadn’t seen her in a couple of days and was missing her, so I had to give her a big hug,” the Kentucky forward said. “My mother is my rock. She is my best friend. At times there was just me, her and my older sister before she had my little sister. God bless her. She sacrificed so much for us growing up.” He remembers her working multiple jobs and enduring things he knew nothing about until he was 20 years old. “She sacrificed so much for us. She kept a brave face through it all. The fact she was able to raise us the way she did and instill the things in us she has is really unbelievable when I step back and think about it,” Mitchell, a West Virginia transfer, said. “She taught me that no matter how hard things get you have to keep pushing forward and find a way to make it through.” His mother has also been his inspiration/motivation on the basketball court. She played basketball at the College of Charleston. “I don’t know if it is true or not but my mom tells me I was dribbling a ball before I could actually walk,” Mitchell said. “She told that to me all the time. I always grew up around the game and basketball has always been there for me. I don’t think I can really tell you when I started because as long as I can remember I have been playing. “I always had a love for the game and she taught me things with my game as well. She knew the physical side of basketball too. She has just always been there for me and now I am finally in a position where I’m able to provide for her and I’m not even a pro yet.” His journey to Kentucky took time. He played his final two years of high school basketball at a prep school and was the Connecticut Gatorade Player of the year. He then played at Mass for two years before transferring to Texas for one season before moving to West Virginia for a year. He made a combined 93 starts in those four years before coming to UK after West Virginia coach Bob Huggins was fired in the spring. “I had some mental health issues at Texas. I’ve seen how emotions can waver and how your thought patterns can change. I tried to keep a brave face but at the end of the day you never know what someone is going through in their internal world,” Mitchell said. “If you can be a light to somebody, even if it’s just for a couple of seconds, that has the potential to change someone’s mind about something they might think of doing to themselves. Whether it is through sports, your job or wherever, we’re all here for a reason. Our connection with others is what helps get a lot of people through their day-to-day life.”

a question of etiquette:

Date Night

Q: This first date is... not a love connection. How do I get outta here with everyone’s dignity fully intact? • Friendly behavior. Say something like, “I’m noticing that I’m getting more of a ‘friend vibe’ here. Is that what you’re feeling?” Either they’ll agree and you’ve made a new local pal or they’ll want to high-tail it out of there. • Sleepy time. Generally, saying that you’re tired is a universal sign that it’s time to wrap things up. If they try to talk you into staying, fake a big ol’ yawn and explain that you’ve got to hit the hay. • Be honest. If your date seems like a reasonable human being, honesty may be the best policy. Just explain that this date isn’t what you’re looking for. Wish them well, split the tab and shake hands at the door. • Lie a little. Fake a reason to leave. Great examples: work in the morning, tummy troubles, broken water lines at your place, grandma’s in town and she wants to party, strict observance of some mysterious made-up holiday that requires you to be in bed before 9pm... whatever works. • Ride it out. What’s an hour (or two) of boredom, discomfort and confusion compared to another great “bad date” story on the pile? Just go through the motions for the remainder of the date and split the bill as you leave.

Q: My date is super weird. Can I bail? I’m sure you’re wonderful, but odds are good that your date also thinks you’re a total weirdo, too. That’s the thing about dating: it’s awkward! It’s impossible to know the fullness of your one, unique spirit or whatever in 30 minutes. If you’re getting bad vibes, sure, you can bail. If they’re being rude or you know it’s not a good fit or they’ve got spinach in their teeth, sure, leave if you want to. But dating is a grueling, awful game of trial and error. Instead of making an instant judgement about this person as a “no,” why not try getting curious? Maybe they’re not the love of your life, but no doubt, they’re more interesting than your first impression suggests. You never know, you might learn something!

Q: Who pays? There are many schools of thought on this one, and many of them are super outdated. We endorse: • Whoever asked for the date pays. It’s a good social grace that if you ask someone out, then it’s your treat. • Split. This is fair for everyone. If you leave a date early, split the check if at all possible. • Take turns paying. This requires a little negotiation. But from experience, there’s no better way to end a really great date than saying, “The next one’s on me.” So what do you do when your date clearly has very different ideas regarding who pays? Take note. You can assume that those expectations are going to continue – and possibly translate to other aspects of the potential relationship, as well.

Q: Our date nights are getting super stale. What are some fun, fresh ideas? • Progressive dinner. Have drinks, appetizers, entrées and dessert at different spots. • Couples’ massage. Get a little side-by-side pampering. • Have a laugh. Go to a comedy show or see a funny movie. • Get cookin’. Take a cooking class together. Spicy! • Get a room. Spending the night in a new bedroom will certainly add some spice to your life. • Do a little art. Paint together. If it gets naughty, so be it! • Date roulette. Write a list of places in town you’ve always meant to visit or try. Cut it up, drop them in a bowl and draw for it on date night.

Q: So our first date went well... what now?! Who texts? Who initiates the second date? • First thing’s first: stop worrying about who should do anything. If it’s on your mind to communicate, you should do so. Just remember to allow room for the other person to initiate contact, too; if they don’t, take that as a sign regarding their level of interest. • Text right away. You should text as soon as you get home from the date (assuming that it’s a reasonable hour). Ask them if they made it home alright – that’s just good manners – and let them know you had a good time. • Next day check-in. At some point the next day, text them to reiterate that you had a great time. • Maintain the status quo. Take your texting/calling cues from your pre-date communication. If you were both texting frequently before the date, feel free to continue with that energy. If it was infrequent, a once-a-day text is probably more appropriate. • Ready for a second date? Within a couple of days, ask if they’re interested in getting together again. If your first date was on a weekday, arrange something for the weekend (assuming there’s a couple days in between). If your first date was on a weekend, arrange something for the middle of the following week. • Respect boundaries. If they’re not matching your energy, respect their choices. There are other fish in the sea!

Q: I have no idea how to date and I am so awkward. What are some questions I can ask to break the ice? • What was your dream job when you were little? • If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? • What’s your “last meal” meal? • How do you like to unwind after a busy day? • What’s the best book you’ve read lately? or... What’s the best show/ movie you’ve seen lately? • What’s the most amazing vacation you’ve ever taken, and what made it so special? • What’s one thing you can’t leave home without? • What do you think is important for a successful relationship? • What’s the biggest mistake you made in your last relationship? • So go on, tell me: what was your first impression of me? • What does your perfect weekend look like? • Pineapple on pizza: for or against? • What’s your guilty-pleasure music? • Do you have a favorite holiday? Why? • If you knew for certain you wouldn’t get caught, what’s the wildest thing you would try to get away with? •
