Letter from the publisher

one small favor...

Louisville’s Premier Blow Dry Bar

Y

ou know how great it feels when someone compliments you. “I love that new outfit,” or “your hair looks great,” or that all-time favorite, “have you lost some weight?” Sometimes, getting noticed and some encouragement can make a person’s day a whole lot better. With perfect timing, it can even turn a bad day into a good one. One of the best moments that I enjoy being the founder of TOPS magazine is meeting people out in the community and hearing “I love TOPS magazine! I pick it up every month. It’s the best magazine in Louisville!” Now, maybe they are saying all that to be polite, but I really don’t think so. I like to say we have “fans” even more than “readers.”

We are here to help you find that special look for all occasions! Fine quality furniture, accessories and gifts for outside – and inside – your home!

20 years of helping Louisvillians create their dream bed with personalized service. CHENOWETH SQUARE Your source for fresh seafood in St. Matthews.

When someone tells me about an article that inspired them or they learned about a new restaurant or business around town or saw someone they know or themselves in the magazine, it makes me feel very proud and a little humbled.

We pride ourselves in specializing in safe, sanitary, and truly customized Eyelash Extension applications.

Now comes the small favor. This premium size, glossy magazine would sell for around $6 or so on a newsstand. Of course, you get it free at over 120 locations. We like to say that it’s “priceless.” This is all made possible courtesy of the many businesses you see advertising in this magazine, the types that are a cut above the rest. Our intention, as always, is to showcase the truly exemplary local businesses that you find in the 502. These advertisers TRULY appreciate your business. It keeps Louisville local and strong. You see, TOPS magazine is like a giant mirror that reflects and amplifies the very best of Louisville. The arts, entertainment, dining, culture, fashion, the most exciting and inspiring people, businesses, nonprofits, and the always popular social event photos. So please take a moment to let one of the many businesses who advertise with us know that you appreciate them supporting this magazine that in turn supports our city, and helps provide a fresh and free magazine each month.

Walter Wagner:

The Man Behind Chenoweth Square

Walter Wagner just celebrated his 87th birthday, but he insists that you not call him Mr. Wagner. "Please, call me Walt," he says with a laugh. An endearingly cheerful gentleman, he's the man behind that St.Matthews institution, Chenoweth Square. He told Rocko Jerome about his place in Louisville history. PHOTO BY DICK ARNSPIGER

W

hen Walter Wagner graduated from Notre Dame in 1952, he had no dreams of entering into the real estate business. "A couple of years later, I took this test on a lark with a friend of mine, and I passed! So suddenly, I had a real estate license. I didn't even study. I think they're probably harder to get now, though," he quips. Two years later he founded the Walter Wagner, Jr. Company, at which time he borrowed $5,000 from his father. He found enough success to pay back the loan in 5 months. He's always specialized in commercial real estate rather than residential. "It's worked out pretty well," he observes. Chenoweth Square became a reality for

him in 1973. "We very deliberately called it a square and not a center," he says, "because we've always wanted it to have a unique feel. The idea is for people to come and be very comfortable in this one place." Walt has carefully curated everything about it over the years, from the wide variety of unique and inviting businesses to the lovely landscaping. "Early on, my wife Beverly and our kids would go out there and weed." In a world full of high tech glare constantly competing for our attention, Chenoweth Square has remained a successful oasis of calm and elegance. Each of the boutiques and shops that Walt hosts is unique and offer

something indispensably pleasant. "I've been blessed by the tenants that I've had over the years," Walt says. "They've been good to me, and I strive to be good to them. I think our customers are sort of above the internet, I like that they can come here and really enjoy their time shopping and engaging." For our photoshoot, Walt had a keen idea, after confirming that TOPS is indeed a color magazine throughout its pages. "I like to wear these britches with really wild colors and patterns, and I've got an orange drop top convertible. Do you think that would look good in the magazine?" Indeed it does, Walt. Indeed it does. 

Heather French Henry

Defying Expectations and Making Differences Every Day Heather French Henry is a truly remarkable lady. She works tirelessly to make a difference daily in the lives of all Kentuckians, as well as doing big things for our veterans. We would be remiss not to mention that she also means a great deal to TOPS, as she was our very ďŹ rst cover story back in January of 2017. Heather was gracious enough to take a quick break and spend some time with our own Rocko Jerome. PHOTO BY DANNY ALEXANDER

18 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2019

IN EVERYTHING THAT I DO, MY MAIN INTENTION IS ALWAYS TO

Make Kentucky Proud With those simple words, Heather French Henry has lived a life of purpose, service, dignity, and intent.

R

aised in Augusta, Heather came from a working class family. The lessons of her father still guide her today. "He's a decorated veteran of Vietnam," she says, "and he's of that generation where we're only just now recognizing concepts like PTSD and its long term effects. He's always been a figure of great strength to me." The first line about Heather's life story is almost always that she was Miss America in 2000 and the first from Kentucky, but perhaps her most important work has been in devotion to improving the lives of veterans. Selflessly, she used the attention directed towards her from that pageant's accolade towards the monumentally important task of making a difference for those who served. All too often, these brave men and women are left disabled or fall through the cracks and become homeless. Heather formed the Heather French Foundation for Veterans. It's an ongoing campaign of compassion. The organization's motto is "Honoring those who died by serving those who live." It's about as personal as it gets for Heather. "Their sacrifices are incalculable, and that doesn't stop after wartime ends," she says. In 2014, she was appointed as Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, where she's served as an outstanding advocate. She also worked as Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of KDVA, serving under two governors, Steve Beshear and Matt Bevin. "One of the things about the great honor of becoming Miss America is that it changes the course of your life and plans," Heather says. "I was on a trajectory for a career in fashion design before winning that title afforded

me so many new options and avenues, so when I came back to that it was with fresh eyes." Heather had graduated from the prestigious University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning just before she took the crown. In the years since then she's put her passion for fashion to work creating elegant designs for every woman. It was something that she knew would be important to her from an early age. “For as far back as I can recall, I always found fashion and style captivating," she says. The name of her line is Frenchy, and you can peruse her luxurious work online.

For all of the tremendous work that Heather has done, her greatest pride comes from her daughters. She beams when she talks about the family she's formed with her husband, former Lieutenant Governor Steve Henry. "I watch the way that they engage with all kinds of people, they're so far ahead of most kids their age. There's so much importance in a handshake, eye contact, and a smile, it makes all the difference in opening doors of opportunity for everyone." As she gears up for a run at becoming the Kentucky Secretary of State in next year's election, Heather has built a life full of defied expectations, making impacts and improvements to the world in ways few might have expected, a Miss America leading foundations to help homeless veterans, a fashion designer serving in public office. Heather’s is a life well lived. "Maybe I just like the challenges," she says with a laugh. "One thing that I can tell you for sure is that as much as I like getting fixed up, I'm just as happy in a ballcap!"

Budding artists of all ages can enjoy the popular “paint your own” experience as the new studio is being enlarged to accommodate up to 50 people. The studio can also be rented out and is perfect for all kinds of parties and special events like girls night out, bridal showers,

Jennifer Faitelson, Manager of Stoneware’s acclaimed retail space enthusiastically notes, “Brides are going to love spending time in the new bridal registry area.” Complete with a table and chairs, the intimate area is designed to provide a bride with a non-rushed, relaxed atmosphere where they can plan out, actually set, and redesign their product choices with special attention from one of Stoneware’s bridal registry experts. ROCKO’S CORNER

Meet Tops Photographer

dick arnspiger BY ROCKO JEROME PHOTO BY DICK ARNSPIGER

Rocko’s Corner is the space designated to the TOPS Louisville Brand Ambassador at large, Rocko Jerome. He’s our staff writer, manager of distribution, liaison for event photography, a man about town, and a point of communication regarding all things TOPS.

F

rom the first issue of TOPS back in January of 2017, Dick Arnspiger and his photography have been an ever present fixture. He's been our man on the scene at countless events, snapping shots and taking down names for Out and About and Top Shots sections. Always quick with a smile or an amusing quip, Dick understands that it's definitely not just about pointing a camera and taking a photo. "I think of myself as a sort of photographic ambassador," Dick says. "For many people, I'm their first point of contact with TOPS, and I've certainly gotten to know a lot of different folks."

That's definitely an understatement. Mr. Arnspiger is a man in high demand, with his name often coming up specifically by request

from event planners and business people all across the city. In addition to events, Dick also captures moments for much of our editorial material, including frequently taking pictures for features like our Meet the Media and Boutique Spotlight sections, as well as special content like last month's Women in Business spotlights. As usual, you will see his name many times throughout this very issue. Perhaps surprising considering the amount of work that he takes on for TOPS, Dick is technically retired. He ended a long and lucrative career in sales at Hewlett Packard in 2014 before devoting himself to photography. "I guess you could say that I like to keep busy," he says with a smile. He's definitely always on the go, and with the wide variety of events and features that TOPS covers, he never quite knows what might come up on his calendar next. It could be a ribbon cutting for a grand opening, one of many fantastic fundraisers around town, parties of many sizes and themes, or portraits of the special people that we here at TOPS make a mission to recognize. He has tremendous technical skill as a photographer, but it's really his nature as a people person that really makes him shine. "I think at the end of the day, I just really like interacting with interesting individuals, and I sure meet a lot of those!" 

Dracula

BEGINS! Fall is in the air, and that means that it's time for Fifth Third Bank’s “Dracula” at Actors Theatre. The yearly productions of this timeless institution are always a wonder to behold, with a classic story, amazing special effects, and exciting acting. This year's production has an exciting twist- actress Rebecca Hirota portrays vampire hunter extraordinaire Van Helsing. Rocko Jerome has the scoop.

A scene from the 2018 production

COURTESY PHOTOS

O

ne of Louisville's favorite Fall traditions, the Actors Theatre production of Fifth Third Bank’s “Dracula” returns to the stage this month. The thrilling and chilling crowd-pleasing show is a treat as sweet as any Halloween candy, sure to leave you smiling despite its dark and gothic subject matter. Whether you're a fan of the arch vampire as depicted by Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, Gary Oldman, or a devotee of Bram Stoker's original novel, you are sure to find something to love in this performance... and also discover new ideas to engage with. “Dracula” has been a major staple of Actors Theatre's yearly programming going back decades, but they've never been known to rest on their laurels. If you haven't been since a long-ago class field trip, you owe it to yourself to check it out again. Chances are, it's evolved quite a bit since you last saw the show. Recent years have brought a modest dose of sly humor to the production in the form of Neill Robertson's maniacally wild take on Renfield, a perfect comic foil for Santino Craven in the role of the undead title character. Craven portrays Dracula as an entity equally pragmatic as malevolent. His

22 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2019

Rebecca Hirota as Van Helsing

depiction strikes a chord as an entity who has survived thousands of years by feeding off of mortals and simply considers our ideas of right and wrong as beneath him. He plays the role with a particular world weariness about him, creating a new view of this very familiar archetypal character. We don't usually think of Dracula as particularly relatable, but Craven makes it so. In a bold move, this year's production features Rebecca Hirota as Van Helsing. Hirota is an acclaimed actress new to Actors Theatre, sure to do something exciting with the part of the vampire hunter, classically depicted as a British man. On the matter, Rebecca says, “As for any character with a long history, the challenge lies in making it your own. I would

Santino Craven as Dracula

say that's also where the triumph lies. You want to grow and respect its legacy without either on one hand, gratuitously changing it for the sake of change or on the other, falling into the pre-existing idea and simply emulating it. Finding your own honest path that still rings true, that's the triumph."

E

ven if it’s not a part of your daily life, it’s impossible not to get excited about classical music when you’re in conversation with Teddy Abrams. “Orchestral music is meant to be shared,” he says. “It’s absolutely a two way dynamic. When you’re experiencing an orchestra live and in person, it becomes this living relationship. When it’s working at its absolute peak, a concert is a reflection of community at it’s best. It’s giving and taking, and ultimately about sharing- an experience, a moment in time, a part of ourselves.” Teddy has become something of a beautiful anomaly: a 21st century classical music star. Having been featured prominently on CBS This Morning, NPR, and PBS, the Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra is nothing short of a point of tremendous pride for our city. He's been recognized far and wide

30 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2019

across international media not only for his vast virtuosity but also for his boundless enthusiasm. "I'm always intent on developing a deeper, more personal exchange with the audience," says Teddy. "We want to build a familial, ongoing bond with music and orchestra, a living relationship. This music is designed to be stirring; it's completely timeless. The idea is to build a dynamic that creates engagement and active listening. The competition for the orchestra isn't other kinds of music. It's Netflix! It's the cellphone that you can't quit checking. It's never been easier to live in front of a screen. We intend to connect with people, encourage them to leave home, put the phone in their pocket and leave it there. Have a shared experience. Coming to see the orchestra perform is about disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with humanity."

THE LOUISVILLE ORCHESTRA's 2019 SEASON

There's often a cynical sense in society that classical music is somehow inaccessible. That without some background or research, a full appreciation of this music is always intangible, just out of reach. Teddy feels that's not so, and he lives to prove it. "We intend to make this presentation so engaging that every second is joy. My approach is simply that if you don’t get it, there's something wrong with us and what we're doing because I know the power in this music. It's a living thing, and it's so important to keep it alive." Teddy has always loved music, and as one might expect, there was a pivotal moment early on where lightning struck him. He was nine years old when he first heard Gershwin; it was a free outdoor concert in a park in San Francisco. "My life changed that day," he recalls. Looking back, the path was a clear one. He devoted himself and grew into an accomplished clarinetist and pianist. He built a career in places around the world both as a soloist and orchestral performer before he assumed the role of conductor, settling here in our River City. As enthusiastic as Teddy is about his life's work, he's equally so about Louisville. When you think about our burgeoning arts scene, it feels like a whole new world is being born here, and what Teddy is doing is no small part of that. The continually evolving Louisville Orchestra stands shoulder to shoulder with the revitalized Speed Museum, 21c Museum Hotel, Kentucky Opera, and Actors Theatre, to name a few. "It's so fantastic to watch how Louisville grows, how these connections build. I watch what's happening, and it feels like a renaissance. It's an honor to be active with artists both outside and inside of this orchestra. You know, Louisville Orchestra members don't just live here, they often move here. They're consummate professionals who make it through a rigorous audition process and come to make a life here in Louisville. This is a city where art happens, and art isn't about living in the past or spending your time in reflection. Art is about what you’re about to do.” 

This season marks Teddy's sixth with the Louisville Orchestra, and it represents a stellar sense of balance between the past, present, and future. It's a very carefully curated series of performances, all designed to strike a profoundly personal chord with listeners and engage with a wide variety of interests. Here are just a few highlights:

September

FREE AT THE IROQUOIS AMPHITHEATER September 7, Iroquois Amphitheater A twilight performance at a beautiful outdoor venue, this night will feature stirring music by Dvorak, Kittel, Tchaikovsky, and feature a guest spot from renowned Kentucky cellist Ben Sollee. Sponsored by LG&E and Brown Forman, it's sure to be a lovely evening for all, open to the public and absolutely free.

October

FAMILY: SUPERHEROINES AND HEROES October 5th, The Brown Theatre It's an undeniable fact that movie scores make up the primary exposure to orchestral music for many of us. The performance on this day centers around some choice favorites from modern composers like John Williams and Danny Elfman, celebrating those familiar and undeniably catchy tunes from Superman, Star Wars, and the 1989 Batman.

November

vIOLINS OF HOPE October 25th-26th, Kentucky Center In a two night series and part of a touring exhibition, the Louisville Orchestra performs using restored violins that survived the holocaust. Performances will include music from the John Williams score for Schindler's List as well as Michael Tilson Thomas' From the Diary of Anne Frank. If the idea of this gives you cold chills, you are not alone.

Abby Shue Chief Advancement and programming Officer – Speed Art Museum

A

bby Shue wants everyone to experience the Speed Art Museum. And if you’ve been wondering what has been going on since the Speed reopened, just go and experience a day in one of Louisville’s civic treasures.

If you haven’t stepped foot there since the renovation, you’ll see that it’s not your parents’ Speed Museum. The architecture, the exhibitions and the programs provide something for everyone. And it dazzles in the process. “We may be 92 years old, but we are also a bit like a start-up,” Shue said with a chuckle as we spoke in the Wiltshire (café) at the Speed. A ballerina in her youth, Shue is brand new at the Speed. In the past ten years she has worked at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts where she began her career and moved up to the Vice President role before taking a position leading the campaign with the Fund for the Arts. While there, she earned her M.B.A. from Vanderbilt University. All of those experiences have proven valuable in her current role at the Speed Museum. “I’m fortunate to have built connections with leaders and organizations across the entire arts community through my work history, and those connections help to enrich the partnerships and programming efforts at the Speed.” “The Speed has done a remarkable job using its 92-year history to change lives through the arts and

34 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2019

become ever more relevant and accessible to the entire community,” Shue continued. “The (Speed) team takes seriously not only its role to curate world-class exhibits, but also to create a welcoming space for all, to facilitate dialogue, build connections and create shared experiences in an increasingly divided world. The community invested sixty million dollars during the renovation to make the Speed a place to convene and we’re excited to bring in new partners and people to experience that.” Upon completion of the renovation in 2016, the Speed Art Museum has approached programming by answering the simple question, “How do we use art to spark dialogue about real things happening in the community?” From the ever-popular Owsley Free Sundays supported by Brown-Forman to the monthly After Hours at the Speed, Shue and her staff oversee the endless opportunities for the community to utilize the facility and all that it has to offer. “We’re passionate about serving the public,” Shue said. “Our mission is simple and clear: ‘At the Speed Museum, we invite everyone to celebrate art, forever.’ In just the past year, we’ve grown our Advancement and Programming staff from two to eight employees so that we can align the support to fully realize our mission.” “On September 19th, we’re thrilled to hold our 2nd Annual ‘Art of Bourbon’ auction, an event that has quickly become not only the premier national nonprofit bourbon auction, but also the second largest annual fundraiser to support the operations, the Speed’s exhibitions, and education programs.” That bourbon auction is going to be strong, just like the products. For more information on the auction go to www.artofbourbon.com.

The Louisville Arts scene enjoys a rich, diverse history. From world-renowned organizations such as the Louisville Orchestra and Actors Theatre, to the 92 years of the Speed Art Museum, the arts in Louisville are not a hidden gem; rather, these entities are ingrained in the fabric of the community and are an attraction for young talent from across the country and around the world. F

or the past century the arts in Louisville have been in great hands. Standards of excellence in the arts locally, nationwide and around the globe have set the bar high for those who have maintained positions of leadership in these organizations.

Supported for more than 70 years by a robust Fund for the Arts, a fund that has supported the large arts groups as well as the growth of emerging arts companies and disciplines, the foundation for the Louisville arts scene is on solid ground. In the past year alone the Louisville Arts community has experienced an infusion of talent as new leaders have been hired in significant roles at the Louisville Orchestra, Actors Theatre, the Speed Art Museum and the Kentucky Opera. The current stewards, supported by outstanding boards of directors across the artistic landscape, are bringing about a 21st-century renaissance for arts lovers and fans of all ages. These leaders bring to the city’s art scene a distinct energy, fresh ideas and an abundance of talent. And rest assured, they all see plenty of potential for growth.

Christen Boone President and CEO – Fund for the Arts

C

hristen Boone is a premiere advocate for the local arts and culture community. As President and CEO of the Fund for the Arts, Christen oversees one of the country’s oldest and most successful annual arts campaigns. In its 70th year, the Fund for the Arts raised more than $8M to help support a diverse array of local arts organizations. “Our community has grown and evolved, and we have grown and evolved with it,”

36 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2019

Boone said. “We are more than a fundraising organization. We are a driver of community impact and collective action. We work to lift our local arts organizations through capacity building opportunities. We work to identify and build new leaders. “The arts drive Greater Louisville’s economy through tourism and by attracting top-notch talent. And the arts improve academic performance, unify communities, and improve general well-being. Understanding that, our goal is to ensure community-wide access to arts and culture experiences.” The big picture is clear: Christen and the entire Fund for the Arts organization work to give as much exposure and opportunity to the

arts as possible. From programs in schools and community centers to supporting large organizations, the Fund for the Arts positively impacts every zip code in Greater Louisville. “Greater Louisville is recognized nationally and internationally as a leading city of arts and culture,” Boone said. “We are one of the only cities our size with an opera, ballet, orchestra, children’s theater, and regional theaters. Not only do we have those amazing organizations, we ensure unparalleled access to them. But, it’s the generosity of our nearly twenty thousand donors that have helped to create that quality. They are the true difference makers. It’s our job and privilege to honor their commitment by creating a stronger, more vibrant city.”

Robert Massey CEO – Louisville Orchestra

W

hen going through the interview process with the Louisville Orchestra, Memphis native Robert Massey and his wife Lisa knew that this is where they wanted to be; back in the Midwest, a return to their roots. Having held positions in Jacksonville and Cedar Rapids prior to his move to Louisville, gravitating towards the center of the country held great appeal to him and his family. What he’s discovered in his six months on the job as Chief Executive Officer in charge of leading the $8M company has affirmed their decision. The opportunity to work with a world-renowned orchestra and one of the budding superstars in the music world in Music Director Teddy Abrams was a major attraction to Massey and his wife. “I remember coming to town for the first time and I hadn’t yet met Teddy,” Massey said in his sixth floor office overlooking Main Street and the Ohio River. “Here is this guy who plays the piano, the clarinet, he composes, he conducts; I was really interested to meet him in person to get his perspective. His artistic vision, his ideas, what he views is possible for this orchestra literally knows no bounds. You know he’s committed to executing and fulfilling that vision. I’d known his reputation, but to meet him and experience that was special. “I called my wife, who’s also a lifelong musician (a violist) and told her, ‘This guy is the real deal.’” And so is Massey. A gifted trumpet player in his youth, Massey knows well the organizational workings of an orchestra from the talent to the board room, from the box office to the volunteer workers.

It helps to have an Ace in your hand and Massey knows what he has in his music leader. The popular and affable Abrams is a music wunderkind. Appointed Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra at age 27, he has dazzled audiences here and around the world with his infectious energy and innate artistic sense. But worldwide recognition is nothing new to the Louisville Orchestra. Founded in 1937 and with a superb reputation locally, nationally and globally, Massey is the current caretaker of a history-making musical treasure and a strong advocate for promoting its excellence. “I’m not a leader if no one is following me,” Massey said. “We are a group of incredibly skilled musicians and staff dedicated to this community. From our ‘Music Without Borders’ program to our Education Week initiatives, we want to continue to promote growth and foster a love and appreciation for what these talented artists do. We want to inspire the community through our unique and diverse offerings through our performances and performances with the Kentucky Opera and Louisville Ballet.” The rich tradition the Orchestra maintains here and abroad is a testament, Massey says, “to the depth and commitment of our business and community leaders. Their investment in us, whether monetarily or as consumers or volunteers, goes right back into the community.” As one of the bedrocks of the Louisville Arts community, Massey appreciates and understands the orchestra’s role as a vital member beyond the performances and presentations. “This is a vibrant and collaborative arts community,” he said. “We look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead of us. And we are committed to extending our reach and look to make a deeper impact through our work in this community and in the music world.”

Conrad Bachmann Founder – Louisville International Festival of Film

A

proud Louisville native, Conrad Bachmann has enjoyed a healthy career in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. Movies, television shows, commercials; you name it, he’s performed it. A song and dance man from his days in the Air Force, Bachmann speaks fondly and with great passion about his hometown and all of the opportunity it can bring to the film industry. Indeed, he founded the Louisville International Festival of Film (LIFF), now in its 10th year, and will preside over the festivities October 10-12 in several downtown locations including the Muhammad Ali Center and the Kentucky Science Center. “We want to show off downtown in a way that our guests, traveling from all over the world, will enjoy,” Bachmann said. “We’re thrilled to have great partnerships with the Ali Center, the Science Center, the Slugger Museum and so many others. “I am blown away by this year’s entries that come from about 30 nations around the globe. We have entries from nations large and small including: Argentina, Spain, France, Germany, Russia, China, Ukraine, Honduras, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Wales, India, Austria, Bosnia, England, Portugal and South Africa,” Bachmann noted. “One interesting entry called, ‘Against the Wall’, is from a man who rode his bike the entire length of the Great Wall of China. So it’s going to be another spectacular event here.” The three-day event is designed to show these aspiring filmmakers, as well as those well-established in the industry, the beauty and depth of what downtown Louisville and its surroundings have to offer. The veteran actor beams about the city to his friends in the business. “I want to spread out the viewing locations around the town to let people see the greatness of the city,” Bachmann said. “The idea for LIFF came up when I saw that Goshen had a film festival and I thought, ‘Why wasn’t it in downtown Louisville?’

“So we got the idea going. My son Brett, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the festival, and the staff and I work to give as much opportunity and exposure as possible to all entrants. We want to make a difference in the lives of filmmakers around the world.”

the winners with a piece of the city.

In giving Louisville the LIFF, Bachmann reaps the benefit of watching others achieve their filmmaking dreams in a unique setting. A leader by example, Bachmann brings filmmakers from around the world to Louisville and sends home all of

“From the preview locations to the Holiday Inn Express downtown on Market Street, to Southern Wine and Spirits, to Masterson’s catering and Angel’s Envy bourbon, this event shows off Louisville in a true collaborative fashion,” Bachmann said.

“Everyone knows the Louisville Slugger bat and we’re proud that they create such a unique award for us,” Bachmann said of the iconic bat company that makes the LIFF version of “Oscar.”

A choreographer, actor and director, Fleming brings an abundance of talent to Actors Theatre and he’s thrilled for the opportunity. He’s also mindful of the national reputation of the Tony Award acclaimed Actors Theatre. He cites as his strength, “My eclectic background and the unique way that, that seems to synthesize and influence how I frame and perceive the world. “I'm inclined to focus on the growth of others and effective stewardship of my organization as my primary role and responsibility,” he said via email as he’s in rehearsals in Cincinnati. “I believe that is the way to increase my chances of creating great art. Standards are high for Actors Theatre, a credit to the thousands of actors, directors, designers, costumers, choreographers and all who support the company. “We tell stories and that gives us the opportunity to speak the unspeakable and reflect what it is to be human,” Fleming wrote. “The conversations initiated are a central function of how we invest and participate in our ecosystem, create meaningful relationships with our stakeholders and offer a key value proposition that is mutually beneficial. I believe the poetic and metaphoric rendering and reflecting what it is to be human, simultaneously, encourages us to see the world as it is and imagine it as we hope it to be.” Distinct goals to be sure but reaching new heights in performance has been a staple at Actors Theatre. And that’s something that Fleming promises to continue to do. Photo by Jonathan Roberts

mind-blowing. I look forward to being a part of the collaborative, radically humanizing and inclusive artistic work at Actors Theatre of Louisville.”

Artistic Director – Actors Theatre

Having grown up in Frankfort, theater has taken him from the east coast, where he was Director of Artistic programming in the nation’s capital at the acclaimed Arena Stage, to the west coast, where he served as Chair of the University of San Diego’s Theater Arts and Performance Studies Department. Since 2016, Fleming has served as the Associate Artistic Director at the Cleveland Play House.

W

hen hired as the 5th Artistic Director of Actors Theatre of Louisville, Robert Barry Fleming stated, “To come home and lead this singular organization with its distinguished legacy of artistic excellence is humbling and simply

“I'd love to see Actors Theatre be a cultural watering hole and civic meeting place where disenfranchised and polarized communities can heal and grow together,” he wrote. “Less of a melting pot, but a place where our difference creates more curiosity and compassion because we accept the world is one of abundance rather than scarcity. Sharing stories is one of the most powerful tools of creative collaboration and knowing ourselves. It's how the human-animal reifies values, attitudes, beliefs and social locations. And there remain many untapped and untold in our region and community; so, more active commissioning of work that allows us to deepen our relationship to our own stories is an area to investigate.” 

Acting Against Cancer continues five-year tradition with annual staging of “The Rocky Horror Show” BY REMY SISK • PHOTO BY STEVE SQUALL

46 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2019

Again

W

hen I first decided to stage a production of “The Rocky Horror Show” – the stage version of the 1975 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” – I did not expect to still be working on it, carrying on a Louisville tradition, five years later. As artistic director of nonprofit theatre company Acting Against Cancer, I knew “Rocky Horror” would appeal to our audiences when we produced it the first time, and I had a vague idea that maybe we could do a concert version or something similar the next year. I’ll admit, at that point, I didn’t really get “Rocky,” as so many people don’t the first time they’re exposed to it. Wait so this guy wears fishnets and has a hunchback butler? And his Frankenstein monster is actually a bodybuilder in tiny gold shorts? And wait, they’re all aliens?! Is it comedy? Horror? Musical? Parody? It’s weird! Because the material didn’t immediately resonate with me, that first show in 2014, which ran for two weekends at The Henry Clay Theatre, was just okay – I didn’t get it. But once it was over and I reflected more critically on it, I knew we could do better because I started to understand “Rocky.” And over the last five years as we have produced the show every Halloween season, I can now say with certainty: I get it. “Rocky Horror” is a glorious, zany, irresistible celebration of being who you are. It exalts individuality and embraces the things that make us different. It unapologetically sends a much-needed message of love, encouragement and originality. Consequently, it only makes sense that in recent years, we have partnered with PLAY Louisville as our venue, a place that, under co-owner and operator Micah McGowan’s leadership, is an all-inclusive haven, a safe place for every kind of person with the same mission as the message of “Rocky Horror.” As we have established our “Rocky” as a concrete new Louisville tradition – taking the

torch from the beloved 1980s and ’90s Vogue and Baxter Avenue screenings – we have seen our “Rocky” show up in places outside of its usual last-weekend-in-October engagement at PLAY. The last two years, we have taken it to PLAY Nashville earlier in the month, we regularly serve as the shadow cast (silent actors in costume acting out the movie in front of the screen) at Copper & Kings Distillery’s biannual screenings, we performed as the shadow cast at the Speed Art Museum's Vogue retrospective screening and even had the opportunity to perform the “Time Warp” for the film version’s Brad and Magenta – Barry Bostwick and Patricia Quinn – at a recent sci-fi convention in Louisville. This fall, we’re taking on yet another project in addition to performing at Copper & Kings and PLAY in Nashville and Louisville: a brand new event called Rocky Horror on the Hill. Iroquois Amphitheater will be hosting a screening for the first time, complete with “Time Warp” dance instruction led by AAC as well as a costume contest. The September 20 event will officially kick off what we call “Rocky Season” and hopefully be a wonderful new collaboration that will introduce new audience members to the magic of “Rocky.” If you’ve never been to “Rocky Horror,” we can help. Check out one of our shadow cast performances, or better yet, visit us at PLAY Louisville October 25, 26 and 31 for our live show complete with singing, dancing and acting! Audience participation is highly encouraged, so bust out your fishnets, don’t be shy and come along for the ride! And if you’re hesitant, you can take solace in knowing that all proceeds go to support a very worthy cause, as AAC’s mission is to change the lives of children touched by cancer through the arts. There’s no wrong way to enjoy “Rocky,” and with October 2019 marking our sixth annual production, I’d like to say we know what we’re doing by now. Remember, it’s just a jump to the left!

odd and Denise Hadley like home projects, but they took on quite a task when they moved into their current home. "My wife and I downsized from a bigger house. Our home here in New Albany was built around mid-century, it's a Gunnison home in a subdivision," Todd says. He's referring to the type of pre-fab houses that were all the rage during World War II and after. Affordable and sturdy, they've been around for generations...but this one needed a little work.

Luckily, the Hadleys found reliable friends at the PC Home Store. "Brent Cox is awesome," Todd says of his main consultant at the store. "PC has been very helpful, they made great suggestions starting with our windows and then on to add ons we've been doing since. I always know that I can call them up and get everything that I need. Every step of the way, PC offers counsel and provides the goods." Much of the house is a work in progress, but the bathroom is ready to show off. It features a Craftsman-style look overall, including printed tile and marble top on just about everything. A designer at PC handled every

little piece of the puzzle- from working with the Hadleys to create a concept to ordering every necessary element, right down to the caulking. The vision became a reality thanks to a thoroughly personal experience, and the Hadleys could not be prouder. PC Home Store isn’t just renowned among do it yourselfers. Leslie Lewis Sheets, IIDA,CID,RID of LL&A Interior Design marks 2019 as her 34th year in design. It's something that has been of interest to her since she was around the age of 12, and it's been a singular drive for her throughout her illustrious professional life. "I know this business well-It's all I've ever done," she says of the passion that she's made a vocation. Her clients love her and her work; her reputation is top notch and she's regarded for her hard work and the love that she brings to every project. Leslie works with her clients every day to make their home and office design dreams come true, and PC Home Store is an important piece of her process. "In my opinion, they truly are the go to design center in our metro area," she says. "It's a one stop shop with a diverse showroom where you can really see, touch, and feel everything from cabinetry to floors to lighting." She also notes that PC Home Store has a fantastic staff. "You can tell that PC rewards loyalty because there's very low turnover, and also, everyone there is very outgoing and engaging. Members of their salesteam will even go out with me to sites and they always provide excellent insight and feedback. It’s always a collaborative effort." 

oon Bahrami and her husband, Joe Workman both have challenging and time-consuming careers––she’s a dermatopathologist, he’s a dentist. But the two also have another portion of their professional lives they take seriously; the couple loves to buy property. Their Highlands home, located on the top of the Falafel House in the Highlands and built in 1889, was a “ginormous” renovation, but anyone who walks in would say it was worth it.

oon and Joe bought the place in 2010. In the middle of a bustling Bardstown Road, Joe, the contractor, and Soon, the decorator, got right to work. The space was in “horrendous shape,” according to Soon, where multiple walls made for small spaces. So, the couple demolished the excess walls, opening up the property, rehabilitated the hardwood floors and lifted the ceilings 2 feet to utilize it as a residential space. But, Soon says, they wanted to retain the “original flavor” of the industrial-themed unit.

ow, the 1,700-square-foot space is a 2-bedroom, 2-and-a-half bath getaway with a 600-squarefoot studio unit next door. The inspiration for the décor came from two dark brown industrial light fixtures Soon says really “spoke” to her. “I want this place to look vintage,” she says. And it certainly does with a late 1800s British carousel, steam-punk artwork and old sewing machines used as shelves. Other distinguishing features include porthole mirrors in an upstairs bathroom, a desk made out of airplane material in the master bedroom and stairs leading to a skylight that goes out to an outdoor entertaining space on the roof. The couple uses the space as a getaway from their Cherokee Gardens abode, as well as to rent to and entertain guests from outside the area. They love to redo homes, Soon says, because it’s how they decompress. “I don’t have children, I have buildings,” Soon says. 

BATHROOM REMODEL

Luxurious and Glam Bathtime BY TAYLOR RILEY • COURTESY PHOTOS

L

auren and Robby Neutz are a husband and wife remodeling team; they recently transformed a dilapidated and dated bathroom into a glamorous and luxurious lavatory. The Jeffersontown Monticello Place fixer-upper had a solid footprint, according to Lauren, but just needed an update. “It makes things a little easier,” Lauren says about a room having a good core. “It cuts down on cost and time.” Their company, Neutz Flipz, only had to make some minor changes to plumbing and electric, which are often two of the most labor-intensive jobs.

Robby, a general contractor, managed the project. He opened the shower and added glass to make the room look and feel bigger. The statement piece of the room is definitely the acrylic oval sloped reclining tub. “Every house is different,” Lauren says. ”Sometimes, the house has the character, or sometimes we go with what the client is looking for.” Lauren was inspired by Carrara marble and diamonds; she wanted to convert the room into a bright and shiny oasis with whites and grays to give it a “glamorous feel.” Lauren especially liked using chrome fixtures and crystal pieces for an opulent feel. “Sometimes I get really fixed on a color or material.” Her favorite part of the re-do? Everything. “I got to do everything I wanted to do with it,” Lauren says. 

KITCHEN REMODEL

Cooking Up Elegance Rick Miller is a master of transformations. Just ask Laura and Michael Gruenthal. They commissioned Rick, owner of Miller’s Fancy Bath & Kitchen, to renovate the kitchen in their River Road condo, taking it from an outdated space lacking in personality to an inviting area of traditional elegance. BY NANCY MILLER PHOTOS BY EVETTA MILLER

66 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2019

S

ince the Gruenthals were living in New York at the time, much of the communication between them and Rick was online. “After we sent the initial drawing to them, they came into our showroom to review it and make some changes. But, throughout the project, our actual face-toface interactions were minimal. That was a really very interesting process that worked well,” says Rick

“We wanted the kitchen to be bright and more in keeping with the rest of the condo, which is open and light and airy. We also put an emphasis on how it would function,” says Laura. The result is a stunning orchestration of style and function that blends gracefully with the

adjoining living and dining areas. White Shaker-design cabinets replaced former birdseye maple cabinetry. On some of the cabinets, glass doors without mullions allow decorative objects to be displayed while also minimizing the visual heaviness of the wood. Further reducing the bulkiness of what Rick said could have been “a big box of a cabinet” was the placement of open shelving, accommodating plates, above the sink. Undercabinet lighting was installed to provide task lighting and a soft glow when the overhead fixture is turned off. Deep drawers, in lieu of shelves, were designed to offer easy accessibility to cookware, spices and other kitchen necessities.

We picked a spectacular piece of quartzite that has wonderful movement and veining of tan, brown and black tones for the island countertop. The entire color scheme of the kitchen was based around that Perimeter cabinetry features a Ludlow Tan Velvet quartzite countertop. A backsplash of hand-painted, multi-colored, neutral color glass tiles contributes a subdued but definite dazzle. Rick suggested to the Gruenthals that rather than retaining the original curved island, a simpler rectangular island would complement the long run of cabinets. The new island is the eye-catching centerpiece of the kitchen. “We picked a spectacular piece of quartzite that has wonderful movement and veining of tan, brown and black tones for the island countertop. The entire color scheme of the kitchen was based around that,” says Laura. “Granite has been a popular countertop choice for quite a few years, but the newest, latest and greatest things in countertops today are quartz and quartzite. The quartzite we used in this kitchen is a fresh change from the black granite that was there previously,” says Rick. “We cook almost all of our meals at home. The induction cooktop we selected is fast on and off and I like the clean look of the flat glass top instead of a gas range,” says Laura.

68 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2019

Above the cooktop is a recirculating hood that vents out the top. A wall oven and convection microware are within easy reach for four-star meals. Miller’s Fancy Bath & Kitchen installed all the new drywall and did all the plumbing and electrical work for the new kitchen. Rick and his team also designed and constructed a concealed enclosure for a stacked washer and dryer and shelves, cleverly removing the appliances and laundry products from view. Pantry storage was built next to the double door stainless-steel refrigerator that’s recessed into the wall, an option the Gruenthals preferred over having cabinets built around the refrigerator. “The island countertop and the backsplash are probably my favorite things about the new kitchen. Everyone who walks in says,

‘Wow!’ when they see the backsplash. But, I’m happy with everything in the kitchen. It’s beautiful and super organized. I just love it,” says Laura. 

ach of the designers on her award-winning design team specializes in any size project, from a simple paint consultation to a full renovation on a home. Speaking of full renovations, Lisa has tons of tips for your next design project. But, before starting the design process, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Lisa Lynn Designs’

Tips for A

Lisa says to remember that the process from concept to completion of a home remodel can take anywhere from three months to a year. “Prepare your family for this short-term lifestyle change and be sure to schedule your start date at a convenient time of the year.”

Successful Remodel

“Remodeling can be overwhelming, due to chaos in the home, unexpected expenses and the length of time to finish the project. Being prepared for the process and expecting bumps in the road will help you prepare mentally for the undertaking ahead.” Just remember there is always a solution and a great professional will find the best route to take,” says Lisa.

Lisa Knight started her design career back in 2002 out of her home. Her business, Lisa Lynn Designs is now in its eighth year in the heart of Middletown, with a 6,500-square-foot showroom, design space and resource center for your home and retail needs.

Included in your plans should be a budget for home furnishings and décor. “Don’t forget to budget for the icing on the cake,” Lisa says. “Beautiful additions, kitchens and bathrooms are always a great way to freshen up and increase the value of your home, but it’s the next phase that makes it complete. Adding new textiles, furnishings, art, window treatments and accessories bring added beauty and comfort, making it feel like home.” 

5Remodeling Tips for home

70 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2019

Research, research, research Always research professionals that have a good reputation in the business and someone you can build a trusting relationship with when taking on a large project for your home.

2

Hire a professional designer A designer can help bring your vision to reality and save you time and money in the long run. It is important to feel comfortable with the designer you choose. Your designer should ask lots of questions and should be a good listener.

3

List your likes and dislikes Make a list of what you like and don’t like about your current home. Create a wish list for the remodel, even if you think it’s not possible. Your designer can tailor your remodel to create a functional space that is aesthetically pleasing.

4

Communicate a budget you have in mind and be prepared to make changes Your designer will work diligently to provide selections to meet your style and budget, but often clients are not aware of material and labor costs.

5

Finally, try to enjoy the process. Take lots of before and after photos. Lisa says. “There is nothing more fun than having friends and family over to show off your completed masterpiece and reminiscing on how far your home has come. It is such an exciting time.”

outhern California girl turned Louisville transplant Karla Jane Kipling loves her high-rise apartment at the Residences at the Omni. Karla is a brand developer who moved to Louisville from Newport Beach, California in May to work for several local companies specializing in consumer products. And, of course, she brought her beachy, sea-shelled SoCal vibes to the River City.

Karla’s one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment has an open feel and the killer views she always wanted. She found the apartment online before the move, and took a chance that it would be just the right space for her and her two exotic felines, Greta and Gunter. She brought virtually nothing but artwork with her from the West, and started fresh with bright and light dÊcor.

She never pulls the blinds in the many windows in the space, watching the sun rise and fall over the city. “I never get tired of looking out,” she says. “I’m so happy here.” She loves cooking meals in the stainless steel appliances and Williams-Sonoma cookware located in the wide, white kitchen and then takes it to the deck lined with a white table, faux grass and Karla’s herbs. She does most of her brand work from home, as she enjoys many of the Omni’s amenities, including the rooftop pool. “Every day I feel like I’m on vacation,” Karla says. “I wake up every day saying, ‘I love this place.’” 

The couple’s first remodel took place on their home in Prospect, which quickly made Jordan realize it was time to hang up her dancing shoes. The young couple moved to their Rugby Place residence when Jordan was six months pregnant with her second boy. Although she goes by the alias @SimplySemder on Instagram, her style is anything but simple. And moreover, cannot be described in one word or placed into a single category. Her style is many things, therefore she chose not to focus on one aesthetic. very detail was thought out from start to finish to ensure the overall comfort and functionality for her family. Being a mom of two small children, Jordan said it took a village to do the renovation. She is grateful for the design assistance from Tassels and Jason Black. In the kitchen you will notice all-white quartz spanning from the countertops to the ceiling. Exposing raw brick throughout the house has played a part in this design, and her previous remodel. It continues to be a conversation piece when people walk through the home. One of her favorite design elements include Egyptian stripped pine pantry doors that were salvaged from buildings around the Mediterranean. These beautiful doors were perfectly placed in the kitchen, adding a unique taste of history.

or over 40 years, Elite Built Homes has been a business synonymous with excellence. The locally-owned building company brings a long history of expertise, experience, and a commitment to excellence in building homes. “It’s an imperfect process, but we chase perfection every day,” says Joe Pusateri, CEO. “We constantly strive to be the very best builder that we can be.”

There’s a misconception that the art of building homes has diminished over the years. Nothing could be further from the truth. Thirty years ago, builders were unaware of radon, mold, and other issues that are paramount today. “Building has evolved at a rapid pace. Our team strives to keep abreast of new technology and up-to-date on the latest science.” Elite has always been a name that you can trust, with a devotion to taking care of customers. They had not originally intended to keep their most recent property, part of this year’s Tour of Remodeled Homes, but were so impressed with the work of Java Construction that they are making that house their home. Steve Hartung has already built an accomplished, experienced network of subcontractors and handles all the scheduling himself. Brandon Jones says working with Steve was “an enjoyable experience from beginning to end” and he will not hesitate to work with him again. Tru Fit Windows

502-499-9797 • TRUFITWINDOWS.COM Tru Fit Windows, a completely female-owned exterior remodeling company, was founded in 2008 by Sabra Mutters. Years before, Sabra (a former realtor) had the unfortunate experience of haggling for three hours over a replacement window price estimate for her own home. Her frustration planted a seed that developed into what is now a business organization dedicated to principles of honesty and integrity. Tru Fit professionals are experienced and committed to listening to customer wants and needs, without trying to talk them in to unnecessary products and services. The company tagline “Go Green Without Going Broke” is reflected in their energy-efficient solutions which not only save money on utility bills, but prevent UV color fade damage to interior fabrics and materials and ultimately reduce greenhouse gases. Their window installation includes a combination of low emissivity coated glass

panes with argon gas filling the space between, resulting in extreme temperatures and damaging rays kept outside while maintaining comfortable, stable air and light conditions inside. Tru Fit Windows handles exterior remodeling and door replacement as well. Some of their services include, siding, roofing, gutters, and glass replacement, not to mention their replacement doors and windows offered in a variety of colors and grains with custom-cut glass. The four cornerstones of their business are competitive pricing, professionalism, green energy solutions, and customization. Sabra and others in her industry are concerned with experienced people in the field aging out and looking forward to retirement. She encourages young people not planning to go to college to explore the trades. Those who are willing to learn, eager to work, and take pride in it can earn a good living. “One of my best installers is a Cuban immigrant. This allows the business to respond quickly to clients’ needs in a flexible manner, while keeping costs down and still offering a large assortment of decor options. Living Spaces By Lyn 502-762-6449 • LIVINGSPACESBYLYN.COM

Lyn Mabry was destined to be a designer from before she was born. Lyn’s mother was a well-known interior designer in Nashville. As Lyn grew into adulthood, she honed her aesthetic and developed the skills necessary to succeed in business. After 20 years in the luxury hotel industry (including a stint at The Brown Hotel) and many successful entrepreneurial ventures, Lyn returned to Louisville to invest in property and design businesses. In 2012, Lyn invested in herself and launched Living Spaces by Lyn. More than an interior design business, Lyn and her team also handle home staging and renovations.

104 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2019

Living Spaces by Lyn serves Realtors, builders, and individual customers in the U.S. and beyond. Four members of the Living Spaces design team are certified staging professionals, and 95% of homes staged by these professionals average 11 days or fewer on the market and a 17% higher final selling price. Home Stagers save Realtors time and money by getting the job done independently. When tackling home renovations, Lyn has developed a trusted team of subcontractors. She combines the wants and needs of the homeowners with the expertise of her team to bring the design vision to life. Interior design is so much more than color swatches. Lyn and the four other interior designers on her team understand how to plan and present, incorporate building codes and structural needs, consider factors such as light and texture, and source materials and furnishings. Lyn’s passion turns personal when delivering interior design services. “We each put our soul into a house. It’s what makes it a home rather than just a place to live. The design, the layout of the rooms, the colors, the pictures we hang, and the lights that illuminate our paths or our bed-side tables - they each say something about us.” Schedule a consultation today.

and exhibits, such as the recent Hunter S. Thompson After Hours at The Speed which was held in conjunction with GonzoFest Louisville. Such 3rd Friday events can feature art demonstrations, Museum Store sales, pop-up shops, workshops, special exhibits, musical performances, and Speed Cinema films.

Chef Johnson graduated from Sullivan University with culinary and business management degrees. He has worked in top restaurants and for the best restaurant companies in Louisville. Wiltshire has been a great fit for Chef Reed, as owner Susan Hershberg is committed to supporting local farmers, seasonal food programs, and sustainably-sourced ingredients. Wiltshire Pantry Inc. includes the original Wiltshire Pantry Bakery and Cafe on Barret Avenue in the Highlands and Wiltshire At The Speed Art Museum. 636 Market LLC, Susan’s other company, manages the restaurant Wiltshire on Market.

Whether a table for two, a corporate function, or a lavish wedding, Wiltshire At The Speed accommodates special requests while maintaining consistency in quality. They provide anything from concession-style snacks out of a mobile kitchen at the Cinema to sitdown dinners requiring elaborate staging and plating. Yet, there is a level of intimacy and thoughtfulness in each dish. Chef Reed likes to think of himself and his staff as “mad scientists” who draw inspiration from the art all around them every day. They enjoy researching artists’ favorite foods and the geographic regions in which they lived and worked. For example, a botanical-themed exhibit conjured ideas beyond edible flowers: extracts, vinaigrettes, and candies to make Wonka proud.

A museum location presents limitless inspiration for creative culinary expression and a variety of events that require a wide range of logistical solutions. Wiltshire At The Speed serves up themed menus to match events

Wiltshire At The Speed is proud to feature here caprese and watermelon salads, bison burger sliders, and a classic cacio e pepe. Delight all the senses before, during, and after the show. 

Tips For Your Best Skin This Fall BY TAYLOR RILEY COURTESY PHOTOS

I

t may still be scorching out, but autumn is right around the corner. And with the changing of the seasons, you should know that your skin can also change with the color of the leaves. Two skincare experts reveal what you should do to protect your largest organ, plus give the best products and procedures for colder weather. With colder weather, you should remember to add moisturizing products to

your routine. The air can be cooler, causing the skin’s natural protective barrier to be stripped. This means that skin can be inflamed and itchy from broken blood vessels, or blisters can rise up from underneath the surface. Also, certain skin conditions can flare up, such as eczema, psoriasis and acne. The first thing to do as the seasons change is to cue the moisture, as in a good, nongreasy lotion. 502 Hemp CEO and Founder Dee Dee Taylor suggests products that are all-natural, chemical free and have no preservatives. Products with the cannabinoid compound like CBD soap, topical lotions and bath bombs are really good for moisturizing dry and sensitive skin. “CBD and hemp seed oil have moisturizing benefits that are second to none,” Dee Dee says. “Chemical-free products are overall better for us.” For those suffering with psoriasis and acne, the topical hemp root salve helps with inflammation and also arthritis pain and wrinkle prevention. And if you want a relaxing night and to destress, Dee Dee suggests a natural skin mask. “If you’re really wanting to have a nice night, get your face mask and bath bomb on,” she says.

The winter months are also good for certain long-term skin procedures, according to Janelle Willoughby, medical esthetician for The Skin Group. She says it’s imperative to “refresh the skin after the summer.” With a season change, Janelle sees an influx of customers with brown or sun spots and broken capillaries. To “clean up anything new that developed over the summer” to the skin, she suggests a series of facial visits; The Skin Group offers the IPL photo facial to “even out the skin.” The VIPeel, designed for darker skin types, sheds away pigmentation and dry skin. “Fall is a great time to get back into procedures that may be sun sensitive,” she says. Janelle suggests topical products infused with antioxidants to get a “glow” in the fall. “As the season starts to change and heat turns on in homes, be mindful of hydration of the skin,” she says. Men often aren’t as mindful when it comes to their skin, but Janelle says they, too, need to exfoliate and hydrate. “We typically try to get them to pack more punch with less things.,” Janelle says. “Trends have been changing, lots of men coming to us to be more proactive.” 

So, as a reminder, this is what you need to do for your skin as the days become shorter: MOISTURIZE: Choose all-natural, vitamin enriched facial cream that’s both thick and mild. PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE ELEMENTS: Always use SPF even if it’s cold out. Remember to apply to the face, tops of ears, backs of hands and use a lip balm. WARD OFF FLAKY SKIN: Remember to use warm, instead of hot, water when bathing and always use a light lotion after you get done. ALTER YOUR DIET: Drink more water during colder months, because your skin is robbed of moisture during this time. Replenish your skin’s natural oils by incorporating omega-3 and omega-6 into your diet.

Get it Straight: ALIGNING YOUR BODY AT CORE CHIROPRACTIC We've come to often expect that with age as well as wear and tear, aches and pains are unavoidable. We reckon with the idea that sometimes invasive surgery on our backs and limbs could become a necessity. However, what if there was a way to minimize or even prevent these maladies and surgical solutions? Rocko Jerome brings us insight from the experts. PHOTOS BY DICK ARNSPIGER

"T

he main thing that we want people to understand is that they have options to feel their best in a holistic manner," says Dr.James Harding, founder of Core Chiropractic. "When we focus on the root causes instead of just the symptoms, our bodies can heal naturally." Dr. Harding, who had been a prime mover and shaker in the corporate world, didn't initially believe there was much to the holistic approach to health. His wife, Jennifer, regularly visited a chiropractor, but he didn't see the benefits...even though she did. "I kind of teased her and gave her a hard time about it," he admits. "I knew I felt better," Jennifer says, "so I was unbothered. I'm just glad that he came around." Come around he did- after returning to school at age 31, Dr. Harding would open CORE a few years later. He heads a team of authorities in their field, who impact lives every day, healing injuries and preventing them from worsening. It has become a

preeminent spot for those seeking to end pain, maintain health, or reach their optimal state. "We have a lot more control over our bodies than we often realize," Dr. Harding says. "We're here to facilitate healing, and we are actively engaged in that process." The Hardings have devoted themselves to serving and helping others to live a fuller life through stretching, exercising, massage, physical therapy, and neurofeedback...and avoiding going under the knife. CORE offers a wide variety of services, including massage therapy, a gym, and physical therapy, all from a team of dedicated professionals. "When you're in proper alignment, everything in your body is operating at a heightened level," Dr. Harding says. "I believe that what we have to offer are some of the keys to a happy and healthy life. We're here to serve you and help you reach your fullest potential.

ew mom Mikka is beaming. Well, we think she’s beaming. At least she seems to love being the mother to a healthy 275-pound son. Mikka, a 33-year old African elephant, took up residence at the Louisville Zoo when she was two years old, having come from Southern Africa where she was saved from being euthanized during an elephant population control program.

She’s not a mother who worried about weight gain during her pregnancy. According to Steven Taylor,

Assistant Director of Conservation, Education and Collections at the zoo, she weighed about 8,500 pounds when she became pregnant. She packed on another 500 pounds before welcoming her son. “She wasn’t on a special diet during her pregnancy but we spent a lot of time making sure she was getting the appropriate amount of food. We didn’t want her to gain over 500 pounds. Elephants will eat and eat and eat, then the calves will be awfully large and the mother will have more trouble delivering them. The staff spent two hours a day doing nothing but walking her

Mikki is a great mom. She’s very tolerant and easy going but she will correct her calf when he’s doing something she doesn’t think is quite right. to burn calories and control her weight,” says Taylor. The shortest gestation on record for an elephant is 612 days; the longest 699 days. Mikki came in the middle at 651 days. Because there were two sperm donors for her artificial insemination, biologicals are still being tested to determine who the father is. As she neared her due date, she had her progesterone levels checked every day and she had a daily ultrasound. Once her progesterone levels dropped back to the baseline after having risen as they normally do during an elephant pregnancy, Taylor and his team knew they were one to five days away from the big day. Very few elephant births have been seen in the wild because the moms typically wander off a little to be by themselves when the time comes, and most elephant births are at night. Mikki gave birth in the zoo’s elephant barn where it was quiet, most of the lights were off and there was a comfortable rubber floor. Only the minimal staff she works with every day were in the barn. “She wasn’t in labor very long. As we got closer, the hard contractions were every ten minutes apart. All of a sudden, she had two or three hard contractions that came pretty quickly. Then, we had a calf,” says Taylor. The zoo health team immediately did a neonatal exam,

determined the calf was male, removed fluid from his trunk, and checked his heart and breathing. An elephant in the wild is most vulnerable to predation when it is a calf. So, nature helps a calf get on its feet relatively quickly to be with the herd and avoid predators. Nature’s help was also present at the zoo. Mikki’s calf was up and walking within half an hour. “Mikki is a great mom. She’s very tolerant and easy going but she will correct her calf when he’s doing something she doesn’t think is quite right,” observes Taylor. Punch, the third elephant at the zoo, is nearby, observing Mikki and the calf, and not appearing to be at all jealous. Punch is the matriarch of the three elephants. Her role will be like that of an aunt but she will ultimately rule the roost. Taylor isn’t sure how long the calf, who will be named through a naming contest, will remain at the Louisville Zoo. At some point he will be moved so that he doesn’t breed with his mother. However, there will be plenty of time for the public to watch him grow up. There are only about 160 African elephants, an endangered species, in North American zoos. About 120 are female. Elephant reproduction in zoos is managed in order to maintain diversity within the small population. Elephants live to be 40 to 70 years old. It’s possible that Mikki could reproduce again. “We’re just going to enjoy this one and do all we can to see him grow up to be a vibrant, active participant in the population, Mikki is genetically very valuable among zoo elephants. It was a significant birth and we want to do everything possible to pass along those genes,” says Taylor. Three iconic Louisville landmarks celebrated the birth of the calf. Churchill Downs lit the twin spires green. The Big Four Bridge glowed green, and LG&E, the zoo’s partner during Earth Month, dedicated its green lighting the week after the birth to the new baby. 

New this year

This year is our biggest yet and will mark some big changes for the festival. Things are going to look a little different this year. We are rearranging, and moving booths to the center of the street of Market Street, clearing the way for guests to browse our unique storefronts at the same time as enjoying vendor booths. Market Street isn’t the only gem of NULU. This year’s festival is expanding to include side street activations with the addition of a Farmer’s Market, petting zoo, and kids’ area. More music means more fun! We are doubling down on the entertainment this year with two main stages. The entire festival will be capped on both ends of East Market Street with stages that will alternate live music sets, while featuring local cultural entertainment in between bands. We are grateful to our partnership with SonaBLAST Records (a former NULU Resident) for their dedication to this event. Hungry? In the spirit of highlighting the neighborhood, our food providers have been thoughtfully curated to compliment the brick and mortar establishments within the NULU streets. Food Truck Alley will feature carefully selected food trucks and all local restaurants and bars will be ready to serve guests looking to take a break from the busy festival thoroughfare. Thirsty? The Green Building parking lot, located in the heart of the festival area, will include The Kentucky Guild of Brewers Beer Garden, featuring local craft beer, and the NULU Bourbon Row, offering handcrafted cocktails

from the finest in Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey. In addition, two full bars located next to each stage, at either end of the festival, will conveniently serve beer, wine, and spirits. ur kids face special challenges in their life,” Keith Inman, president of Kosair Charities, says. “The arts are a vehicle to enhance inclusion …it is a learning platform where all people are equal and a very important piece of their development.” Kosair Charities awarded multiple grants this year, totaling several hundred thousand dollars, according to Inman. “We look at the arts community and where we can spend our funds wisely,” Keith says. Arts grants and sponsorships in recent years have included StageOne Family Theatre, Louisville Visual Arts, Commonwealth Theatre Center and Actors Theatre. A multi-year grant was given to Fund For the Arts, which allows children to participate in programs like the Louisville Youth Choir, Louisville Visual Arts, and more.

“The arts means something different to every one of us,” Keith says. “Music, museums, performing arts … it is in our core fabric. Arts brings us all together and creates and enhances a community. It enhances our ability to grow and get through difficult situations.” Kosair Charities, the largest charity for children in the history of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, wants to make sure all the kids in these programs have access to the arts. “We want to help every child overcome every obstacle,” Keith says. “To find creative ways to help our

kids grow; arts is just one of them. Kosair Charities is the last remaining community chest for the kids and a job we take very seriously.” 

Bourbon Heritage Month BY PAUL NAJJAR • COURTESY PHOTOS

With the calendar turning into September, we look forward to raising a glass to Bourbon Heritage Month. Louisville and bourbon distilleries everywhere take center stage for this opportunity to feature Kentucky’s signature elixir. It’s a celebration of history, tradition and homegrown excellence. Quick story: twenty years ago, in May 1999, I attended a dear college friend’s wedding on the outskirts of New Hope, PA; the New Jersey side of the Delaware River. My friends were New Yorkers through and through, Brooklynites. Several of their NYC friends were there to celebrate and we all communed at a rural bed and breakfast. Following the rehearsal dinner we gathered in the vast living room and veranda of the B&B. I plopped down a 1.0 litre bottle of Woodford Reserve on the bar. “What’s this?” the New Yorkers queried. My retort: “In Kentucky, we call this ice tea.” Bottle was emptied in a couple hours. At this time of year, ads are popping up all over the media for bourbon tastings, bourbon-themed dinners and bourbon-centric parties that elevate the profile of Kentucky’s gift to the world. We spoke with a couple of master distillers about Bourbon Heritage Month and their products. And caught up with the creator of the Whisky Chicks, a website devoted to those who love, want to love or simply have an interest in learning more about bourbon. As Woodford creator Lincoln Henderson once told me, “Pour yourself an ounce or two, just a couple of ice cubes, and enjoy.”

Linda Ruffenach » Founder/Owner, Whisky Chicks

T

he Whisky Chicks web site brands itself as, “Real Women. Real Whisky.” And when you spend just a couple minutes talking to the creator/founder/owner Linda Ruffenach, you get the point quickly and enthusiastically. “Whisky Chicks was started in January 2014 and had to do with my desire to engage with acquaintances and friends without my husband, my kids, my work involved,” Ruffenach explained. “What better way to do that than over a glass of bourbon? “My husband and I were sitting by the fireplace on a cold winter’s night and we came up with the name,” she recalled. “I checked to see if the website was available and we were a little surprised so we knew that being first could be a good thing. We debated on the spelling of ‘whisky’, with the e or without the e, but we wanted to emphasize the KY at the end of it for Kentucky.” They hosted their first event on a freezing night that January and over 35 women attended. She immediately sensed that she was on to something. Events and ideas for events began to pour in.

“People really wanted then, and still want, to hear and learn more about bourbon,” she said. “The passion I have centers around making sure that every event is approachable and fun and that everyone feels welcome. At most every event we have something for the novice, the enthusiast, the connoisseur. That’s been a big part of how the Whisky Chicks idea has grown.” The business has grown in its fiveplus years and has made an author out of Ruffenach. “How to Be a Bourbon Badass” was published in 2018 and her mixers, events and gatherings are all well publicized on the whiskychicks. com website. Sounds easy, this party-holding business, but it’s about as complex as the potion to which it’s devoted. “The Whisky Chicks is a philosophy; an experience,” she said. “But it is a business, too; and a lot of work. I like to call our mixers ‘anti-networking events.’ We just want to keep getting others engaged in a fun atmosphere with the opportunity to get input from those who love it as much as we do.”

Jade Peterson » Master Distiller, Kentucky Artisan Distillery

U

nique. Special. Reserve. Small batch. You hear those terms often in the bourbon industry. But, all of these descriptors describe the Kentucky Artisan Distillery operation in Oldham County. And don’t forget the omnipresent “farmto-(insert destination)” label too. Because at Kentucky Artisan Distillery, you can see the exact grains of your future barrel of flavor being grown in the nearby fields. Master Distiller Jade Peterson came up through the bottling division of the small company and rose through the ranks to become the Master Distiller. His wife trains horses and he makes bourbon. For the Illinois natives, how Kentucky is that? “I may not have the right family name for the bourbon industry, but I had the work ethic,” Peterson said of his position. “I got my foot in the door in logistics and it’s been a series of opportunities and challenges ever since.” The farm-to-barrel aspect of Kentucky Artisan Distillery makes for a niche market. The barrel production they get in one year is surpassed by the larger, more established distilleries in less than a week.

“This is hard work, but it doesn’t feel like work,” Peterson said. “We want to stay true to the heritage of Kentucky bourbon and whisky distilling so we use a lot of equipment that’s been in use for over 75 years. We have hand-hammered copper stills and we contract with a farm less than a mile away to grow all of our grains. We want to make this as traditional as possible and keep craftsmanship as the number one aspect of the product. You just can’t replicate the flavor of the old copper stills, in my opinion.” At KAD, you can create a custom barrel to your own mash bill specifications and company President Stephen Thompson has found some interesting ways to age some of the product. One example is the Jefferson’s Ocean brand, which sends barrels on the open seas allowing the rocking of the ocean-going vessel to swirl the liquid throughout the course of the journey. Makes for a sweeter tasting product. “With the success of Jefferson’s Ocean, we’re working on a new product called

‘Jefferson’s Journey’,” Peterson revealed. “We’re putting barrels on smaller boats that travel down the Ohio, to the Mississippi, to New Orleans, then to Key West and up the coast to New York. This journey replicates how the product was delivered during Prohibition. The empty barrels were then brought back to Kentucky via railroad.” Unique craftsmanship, style and flavor; Kentucky Artisan Distillery brings the farm to barrel to bottle directly to your home.

“Let’s talk Bourbon” at the Distillery in Lawrenceburg. This is a great event for anyone wanting to know more about our brand and the Bourbon making process.

On Bourbon Heritage Month – As we do every year, we will release our Limited Edition Small Batch this September to celebrate Bourbon Heritage month. This is always a unique blend of some of our ten recipes that are aged longer than our standard releases and bottled non-chill filtered at barrel strength.

On the unique offerings from Four Roses - Part of our uniqueness lies in our use of ten different recipes to craft unique flavors in each of our offerings. By utilizing two grain recipes and five proprietary yeast strains, we create these ten recipes that are used in different combinations for each of our products, enabling us to offer unique flavors in each one. This is demonstrated in our Small Batch bourbons. The original Small Batch uses four of our ten recipes, our recently released Small Batch Select uses six of the recipes, and our Limited Edition Small Batches always use different combinations. Each of these has its own flavor profile, but each has the distinctly mellow and smooth characteristics that people expect form Four Roses. 

The industry will be celebrating Bourbon Heritage month with the Kentucky Bourbon Festival September 16th through the 22nd. This is an opportunity for guests from all over the world to immerse themselves in the Bourbon culture with events that entertain and educate people on the history, production, and uniqueness of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Marking Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month:

Kids Cancer Alliance

Every day, Kids Cancer Alliance works to make a difference in the lives of children, and their families, suffering from cancer. The burden placed on these young souls and the people who love them is truly monumental, but with the help of this wonderful organization, it's a little less stressful a struggle.

S

eptember is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, a particularly salient time to note that thousands of children are diagnosed with some form of cancer every year. The Kids Cancer Alliance works tirelessly year round to make an impact, helping kids to live as kids despite their illnesses. Growing, sharing, learning, just having simple fun, these things are of immense importance to all kids, but that's especially so for kids facing this terrible disease. They are forced by circumstance to grow up far too quickly; they are at high risk of losing a sense of joy in their lives.

During Summer months, the organization hosts special weeklong camps for young patients as well as their siblings. Here, they enjoy doing all the things indispensable to the camping experience- arts and crafts, swimming, hiking and of course, making s‘mores. A staff of doctors and nurses are ever present and vigilant in case of emergency and to administer ongoing care. For children too ill to travel, the Kids Cancer Alliance has the Camp-In program, designed to bring the experience of camp directly to them. Family Retreat Weekends are also part of the organization's offerings. These allow full families with kids fighting cancer to take trips where they can relax, rejuvenate, and bond. At quarterly events throughout the year, the kids reunite and reconnect for recreational outings. Making friends with other people experiencing the same challenges is such an essential part of life, and these kids need that kind of companionship perhaps more than anyone. With Meals and More, KCA offers unique

hot meals to these special kids and their families. These dining experiences make special occasions out of regular days and help to break up the monotony of time spent in the hospital. Thanks to the Flashes of Hope program, families can also receive professional quality photos. These photos document the progress of treatment, as well as capture moments of happiness during difficult times, providing something positive and full of love

to reflect upon for years to come. If you wish to help, there are two big ways: you can donate, or you can volunteer. All of the programs offered by KCA are absolutely free of charge for families, and they need people of all walks of life to help them keep running smoothly. t’s the one-day cycling event that provides benefits that last a lifetime. In 11 years, the annual Bike to Beat Cancer event has raised more than $3.49 million in support of Norton Cancer Institute; it raised over $603,000 in 2018 alone. These huge numbers are due not only to the merit of the cause, but to the success of the event that provides a fun, healthy challenge for both inexperienced riders and serious cyclists alike. There are options to fit all fitness levels. For those looking for a family outing and a taste of cycling, the Family Ride is the right speed. It costs $10 per rider, follows a relaxed 5-mile route around Norton Commons and ends at the Family Fun Zone at Norton Cancer Institute – Brownsboro, where riders enjoy free food, games, bounce houses and face painting. There’s also an hour-long spin ride

More serious riders can choose from a 15-, 35-, 65- or 100-mile route, each with their own fundraising requirements, pit stops, motor support and safety teams. Participants in the 35- to 100-mile courses must raise $400, while those riding 15 miles are required to raise $200. (Survivors are asked to raise $100 and $50, respectively.) In addition to the thrill of the ride and the satisfaction of contributing to lifesaving cancer initiatives, there are plenty of perks provided by dozens of community sponsors. As riders gather at the starting line at Norton Cancer Institute – Brownsboro, they’ll enjoy free breakfast from Chick-fil-A and, once they return to cross the finish line, they can feast on food from Tumbleweed and enjoy massages from Louisville School of Massage and stretches with rehab specialists from KORT. Riders of the 65- and 100-mile courses also get a special free lunch from Morrison Healthcare Food Service served on a stunning farm. Juliana

Valencia With genuine enthusiasm and an upbeat, positive attitude, WHAS 11 anchor Juliana Valencia strives to bring a kind, personal touch to local news. She visited with our own Rocko Jerome at a local pub, where she shared just what she loves about the city that we share. PHOTO BY DICK ARNSPIGER

B

orn in Florida, spending much of her childhood in South Texas, the latter part of her teen years in Nashville, then attending college in Florida, Juliana Valencia had many rich experiences growing up, experiencing the cultures of different parts of the country. "My father was a university professor, and my mother was a Spanish teacher. It was very important to them that they set me up for success," she says. "I deeply appreciate it, but as an only child sometimes you really felt the pressure to succeed."

I love the way that making friends here tends to lead to making more friends, as everyone kind of likes to get together and have a good time. You don’t really ďŹ nd that everywhere; this innate friendliness. She has nothing to fear. Already an anchor at a top local station in her twenties, her hard work and can-do attitude has brought her to a fantastic place - both figuratively and literally. "I love Louisville so much," she says. "It's such an active city with so much passion and history." Juliana's path to here and now was an unusual one. Growing up with a love of theater, piano, and dance, journalism was not necessarily her first chosen path as she enrolled in the University of Florida. She was hesitant to commit to journalism because of the pay and transient lifestyle. So, she started out trying to also major in Hospitality and tacked on a business minor.

community

The business minor stuck, but ultimately journalism persevered over hospitality. As she says, "Things kept working out." She was absolutely bitten by the bug in her Junior year when she landed an internship at CNN in Atlanta. After graduating in 2013, she took an on-air job as a one-man band reporter in New Bern, North Carolina, then made it as a weekend anchor and reporter in Paducah. Along the way, she was told that she would never be an anchor...making it all the more sweet when she became just that when WHAS hired her as a weekday anchor in 2016. She initially served on the morning and noon shows, but in March she took over the 4:00 p.m. It’s the same show the well-loved Rachel Platt did before she left broadcasting to begin a new role at the Frazier Museum. "Rachel is really fantastic, and it's a tremendous honor," Juliana says. "I also really like these new hours, because it means that I don't have to get up at 3 AM!" Besides bringing a youthful energy to the news, she also endeavors to bring new ideas as well. A first generation American, Juliana's parents hailed from Colombia. Juliana is bilingual, and she produces a daily online version of WHAS news in Spanish. "I feel that we live in a time in which it's just very important to be inclusive," she says. Juliana enjoys Louisville's rich social scene and the charm of it’s different neighborhoods. "I love the way that making friends here tends to lead to making more friends, as everyone kind of likes to get together and have a good time. You don't really find that everywhere; this innate friendliness. I love it here." She loves exploring new places to eat, and that Bourbanism is a thing. There are a few things that have led to making Louisville so special to her. Getting a little slice of heaven and love at Butchertown Pizza, running more than a 5k for the first time in her life through the Triple Crown of Running series, and Louisville City FC. She only overslept twice (still making it before air) while working the morning show... the two times LouCity won the national championship the night before. 

Juliana's Juliana

LOUISVILLE Juliana's best friend Wilson has been with her since her college days. He's a furry little pup, a poodle and shih tzu mix. His first months of life were as a secret puppy living in her sorority house. He grew up used to occasionally hiding away or going on clandestine rides, perhaps the reason that today he's very agreeable to being carried around in a bag, enjoying looking around the world as seen from Juliana's hip. She doesn't take him to all of her favorite destinations around town, but she sure takes him to a lot of them. His favorite being her gym, White Buffalo Training Systems. "He's even been on TV a few times," she says proudly.

Here are a few of Juliana's favorite Louisville places and experiences Butchertown Social

Zach Longoria Project

Situated right around the point that Butchertown becomes NULU, this cozy spot has provided a soft landing place for many a night in Juliana's world. She's fond of their Old Fashioneds as well as their various vittles, including their delicious bacon wrapped dates with arugula.

A friend she knew from Paducah introduced her to the band’s members after she half-heartedly agreed to go see them. Her support of the local funk and soul band has led her to discover different music venues in Lou and filled her with a trenmendous sense of pride in witnessing their growth, from playing on Opening Day at Churchills Downs, to Louisville’s 4th of July Celebration this year. "Something that I've found out about this town: saying yes results in great things happening."

Waterfront Wednesday Juliana loves live music and this monthly concert series provides a beacon of fun, and a sense of community throughout the Summer months. since she lives near the river, it's nicely walkable from her home and gives her an excuse to host people.

Susan Sweeney Crum Shines a Spotlight on Jeannie Unruh She made quite a name for herself in TV and radio, and we’re proud to feature her first ever magazine article! Susan Sweeney Crum shares a special story with us of an amazing woman doing big things: her friend and ours, Jeannie Unruh. BY SUSAN SWEENEY CRUM PHOTOS BY BILL WINE

W

hen you meet Jeannie Unruh, she seems to be the picture of health. She’s outgoing, active and loves to be around people. But 34 years ago, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. At 30 years old, Unruh envisioned a future that included being bed-ridden and living in a wheelchair, “a burden” to her family. All those were common among people diagnosed with MS a generation or two earlier. Fortunately, new medications were changing all that, and creating a much brighter future for people diagnosed with MS. Just as important, she was paired with her “angel of hope,” a woman 15 years older than Jeannie, who was mobile, active and showed few “obvious” signs of illness. That’s when Jeannie decided she wanted to be that person for others.

136 TOPS LOUISVILLE | September 2019

So she has been active with the Multiple Sclerosis Society, on the local and national level, educating and encouraging others, and helping raise money for research for the illness. “I’ve been very involved with the mission since I was diagnosed. After the first couple years, I just felt that… that’s what I was made to do.” She and her husband Victor agreed to host a gala at their home in Floyds Knobs that has grown from a few hundred people the first year to the 550 they expect this month. They have successfully developed what she calls a “party with a purpose.” “We have created a party that people like to come back to, it’s lots of fun. They know why they’re here, we always have a mission element.” The gala includes a cocktail hour, dinner, live auction and a band. The auction offers items from a trip to Switzerland, golf at Pebble Beach to concert tickets, but there will also be opportunities to help at whatever your comfort level for contribution.

“Maybe your one dollar is the one that makes a difference, that helps us find a cure. So, every dollar counts. I think we have an event where people get that. So I think that’s why it’s been so successful, it appeals to a lot of different people!” Over the last 9 years, the event has raised $3 million for the National MS Society, which then

distributes funds back to the local chapters. The annual event was growing so fast, the Unruhs decided several years ago to build their own venue for it, a 14,400 square foot “barn” that includes heat and air conditioning and offers a panoramic view of both the New Albany and Louisville skylines. 

Bronze Ceiling

Across the country there is a growing movement to recognize noteworthy women and their historical contributions through public monuments. Unfortunately, less than 7% of the 5,193 monuments in the United States presently recognize women. We are about to change that statistic with the “Breaking the Bronze Ceiling” initiative. Each month TOPS will feature a Kentucky woman who impacted the Women’s Rights Movement. For more information visit breakingthebronzeceiling.com.

taught Kentucky History in segregated Todd County schools; and, realizing her students did not see any representation of themselves in the learning materials provided, Alice developed “Kentucky Fact Sheets” to highlight the struggles and accomplishments of African-Americans. These were compiled into a 1939 manuscript that was rejected and went unpublished until 1982, when it was given

the title “The Fascinating Story of Black Kentuckians: Their Heritage and Tradition.” Throughout her 18-year teaching career, Alice continued her education, wrote for African-American papers such as the Louisville Defender, and supplemented her meager income in the summertime with cemetery, dairy farm, and domestic work. As she moved up the ranks of black journalism, Alice Dunnigan was eventually named Washington bureau chief of the Associated Negro Press in 1947. In that same year, she became a member of the Congressional press galleries. In 1948, she paid her own way as she covered the Truman Presidential campaign tour. Upon her return, Alice was the first black female to be given credentials as a White House correspondent. Eisenhower refused to call on her in press briefings, but later relented only slightly as he required her to submit her challenging questions in advance, something no other member of the press corps was required to do. Still, Alice attended every single briefing without fail, sometimes jumping up and down in vain attempts to be acknowledged. In 1960, she joined the Lyndon B. Johnson campaign and was ultimately appointed to John F. Kennedy’s Presidential Commission on Equal Opportunity and Presidential Commission on Youth Opportunity, where she served until 1970. During her career, Alice traveled to 4 continents and the Caribbean and received more than 50 awards for journalism. 
