For the purposes of laying out this “state of the city” in terms of economic achievement, direction, plans and implementation, we consulted with Mayor Greg Fischer and the Mayor’s Office, Greater Louisville Inc., and the Louisville Downtown Partnership.

Letter from the publisher

T

Louisville’s Premier Blow Dry Bar

o answer your first question – Christie Brinkley is a glorious 65 years young. She has been featured on over 500 magazine covers worldwide, served as a spokeswoman for CoverGirl, performed on Broadway, in television and film and succeeded as an entrepreneur in multiple industries.

We are here to help you find that special look for all occasions! Fine quality furniture, accessories and gifts for outside – and inside – your home!

Also, Ms. Brinkley has worked as an illustrator, photographer, writer, designer, and activist for human and animal rights and the environment. She is one busy woman. Like many of us, we grew up being wowed by the “Uptown Girl” and her many memorable Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Editions. She was indeed one of the original “Super Models.” All of us at TOPS are thrilled that Ms. Brinkley is partnering with our magazines and social media outlets in both Louisville and Lexington to help launch her new prosecco, Bellissima. Some of the toughest critics I know are on the staff here at TOPS, and they all say it’s truly delicious. It is a dream come true to have one of the biggest stars in the world on our cover. Ms. Brinkley helps remind us that while good genes play a part in our health and appearance, having a plan to nurture our bodies with the right nutrition and exercise is one of the best investments we can make in ourselves. We have a terrific Q and A with Ms. Brinkley. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed interviewing her. While we started 2020 with a pop, TOPS readers can look forward to lots of exciting content in our magazines, websites, social media outlets and email newsletters this year. Make sure to log on, follow and subscribe for the Who’s Who, What’s New and What to Do. Here’s to your best year ever. And remember, 65 is now the new fabulous.

t’s almost time once again for one of Louisville’s favorite annual events. The American Heart Association Heart Ball is a fantastic night of enjoyment for a deeply important cause. It’s a night of cocktails, dinner, and dancing to live music. Money raised at this elegant soiree goes directly towards research that could ultimately result in longer, healthier, and happier lives for many. Heart disease, in some form or fashion, fractures the lives of millions every year; the American Heart Association labors relentlessly towards medical breakthroughs. They also raise awareness for lifesaving matters such as learning Hands-Only CPR, controlling blood pressure, and recognizing the signs of heart attack and stroke. They also emphasize the importance of practicing good health habits and controlling nutrition. Altogether, the event raised $600,000 last year. This year’s goal stands at $800,000. The American Heart Association hosts Heart Balls all around the country, but the Queen of Hearts Court is an institution unique to Louisville. They are made up of ladies with a passion for fundraising. The Queens advocate for their “why.” That is, their motivating factor in participating. It might be in

memory of a friend or family member, for themselves and their own experiences or struggles, or just from a desire to promote healthier living. They campaign for the cause in a friendly fundraising competition. These devoted women aid the Ball towards raising colossal money every year.

You can help save lives and have a fantastic time doing it. The 2020 American Heart Association Heart Ball will be held on February 8th at the Kentucky International Convention Center. For tickets or to make direct donations, please visit LouisvilleHeartBall. Heart.Org. 

The Fillies: 60 years strong and getting stronger BY KATHIE STAMPS PHOTO BY DICK ARNSPIGER

22 TOPS LOUISVILLE | January 2020

I

n January 1959, volunteer experts were needed for a new Derby event, a lavish ball that would include a ceremonial crowning of the Derby Queen. Frances Askew Davis, who had appeared in Life magazine the year before, spotlighting her fundraising efforts with the Younger Women’s Club, led 13 other women in planning the event. Their work was so valuable and appreciated, they became a social and civic entity of their own, the Fillies, and the gala became known as the Fillies Derby Ball. Six decades later, the Fillies are still supporting the Kentucky Derby Festival (the year-round organization founded in 1956) and its charitable arm, the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation. The Fillies work with KDF to produce five major events. Besides the Fillies Derby Ball, there’s also the Official Kentucky Derby Festival Program, Derby Queen and Derby Princess Program, Children’s Tea, and the Royal Court Float in the Pegasus Parade.

Membership in the Fillies is capped at 250. The 2019-20 year (July 1 to June 30) has six

executive members of the board of directors: Susan Meyer Moore, president; Paula Bishop, president-elect; Melanie Miller Kane, vice president; Joanne Hurst, treasurer; Ashley Brooks Hoffmann, corresponding secretary; and Shari Broecker, recording secretary. The Fillies are active in the community with 17 special committees and 15 standing committees. The 2019-20 standing committee chairs are Angie Springate, membership; Barbara Gargala, historian; Barbara Wainwright, bylaws; Connie Schilffarth, ways and means; Debra Rayman, immediate past president; Jenn Matthiessen, newsletter and yearbook; Jocelyn Dave, nominations and elections; Jude Elkins, arrangements; Kimberly Gant, computer information and technology; Sheree Bollinger, parliamentarian; and Stacy Serad, publicity. Susan Meyer Moore is the 2019-20 president of the Fillies. She joined the organization in 1995 and has chaired 13 different committees as well as serving as vice president and president-elect. Her mother, Mary Lou Meyer, was

president in 1980. “Her love of the Fillies and Derby Festival definitely rubbed off on me,” Susan says. “I have several wonderful memories, including John Wayne walking in our backyard, seeing my mother photographed with dignitaries and celebrities while representing the Fillies, and riding in the Pegasus Parade, wearing the coveted Festival jacket. All of these wonderful memories inspired me to want to achieve the same, while giving back to our community.” The Fillies Derby Ball, chaired this year by Julie Hinson, is Saturday, April 4 at the Galt House Hotel. This year’s theme is the Fillies “Pegasus” Ball, with special attendee Monte Durham. The 2020 Derby Queen will be chosen the same way she was in 1959, by the random spin of a wheel from the five young women chosen as members of the Royal Court. Chaired by Pat Harrison, the 2020 Children’s Tea is Sunday, April 26 at the Crowne Plaza with the theme “A fairy godmother’s guide to being a prince or princess.” Over 300 children will meet the Royal Court and have a formal tea party. Well over a half-million visitors to Louisville will be keeping up with all the Kentucky Derby Festival goings-on throughout the entire month of April thanks to the guide published by the Fillies. Chaired by Cindy Lewandowski in 2020, the Official KDF Program is 100+ pages filled with event details. Tabitha Rhodes chairs the Royal Court Float, which will be in the KDF Pegasus Parade on Thursday, April 30 on the parade route down Broadway. The Weber Group in Sellersburg, Indiana, is sponsoring the refurbishing of the beautiful Fillies float. Each year’s president of the Fillies takes over leadership with certain goals for the year. “I have truly wanted to inspire and energize our organization this year,” Susan says. For example, each meeting has had a theme, like “Fillies Fiesta” in September and the November general meeting “Fillies at Tiffany’s,” which included a fashion show and 20+ local shopping vendors. “Our January meeting will be a “pink out” as we celebrate and introduce the 2020 royal court to our organization,” Susan says. “I am excited for the future of our organization and the new leadership of KDF CEO Matt Gibson. Our commitment to community service and engagement truly sets us apart.” For ticket info to any event and for anyone who is interested in becoming a member of the Fillies, please reach out to Susan Meyer Moore or any other board member at fillies.org. 

10th annual

Wrapped in Red Gala BY TAYLOR RILEY PHOTOS BY CANDICE GENTRY AND DICK ARNSPIGER

I

n its 10th year, the American Red Cross Louisville Area Chapter will be hosting the Wrapped in Red Gala to raise money for its Home Fire Campaign and other community programs. The programs from the Red Cross save lives, according to the Red Cross Kentucky Region Senior Director of Communications, Amber Youngblood.

The Home Fire Campaign is a national American Red Cross initiative which has been in existence for over five years. Money raised from events like the Wrapped in Red Gala, and other donations, go to placing smoke alarms in homes, as well as fire safety education pieces for Red Cross volunteers who go door-to-door to educate homeowners and their families on fire safety. According to Amber, the Red Cross in Kentucky has saved 62 lives with the program; the regional program is in the top 10 nationally for the number of lives saved. “When a fire breaks out, a person only has an average of two minutes to get out,” Amber says. “That’s not that much time. Our preparedness programs, like the Home Fire Campaign, allow us to install smoke alarms, as well as provide fire safety education to families, so they have plans in place, and practice those plans, should the need arise as a result of a home fire.” Wrapped in Red, to be held this year on Saturday, February 15th at Omni Louisville, will help provide financial assistance and resources for families impacted in a disaster. The 700 attendees at the “party for a purpose” will experience a specially prepared

three-course dinner, premiere auction items, music from CMA honorees Thompson Square, and a silent disco in the Red Lounge area. “We have built this event to incorporate

new elements every year,” Amber says. The majority of funds collected for the American Red Cross go to help people in the community––about 90 cents per dollar, says Amber. “This event helps showcase what we do every single day, but in a fun and engaging way. We couldn’t do what we do without the work of our volunteers and without the support of our donors.”

AFM Threads BY ROCKO JEROME PHOTOS BY DICK ARNSPIGER

I

f you think you know what to expect from a store in the mall, it might just be time to think again. Over the last couple of years, the electrically eclectic AFM Threads has brought some truly cutting edge clothing to Louisville via their shop in the Mall St. Matthews. Now, with a new second location just across the expressway at Oxmoor Mall, the AFM Threads brand is growing and expanding.

AFM is a place where you never quite know what to expect, but you know it will be interesting, engaging, bohemian, chic, and feel completely independent of anything one could ever consider "pedestrian." Not only is the store an explosion of color and style where you will find the dress to impress for any festive occasion. If you're lucky, you might be able to catch a fashion show parading through the place, have a cocktail, enjoy the music of a DJ, or appreciate the work of local artists on display. You can book a makeup expert to put the bam in your glam. This isn't just a shop in the mall; it's a shopping experience.

32 TOPS LOUISVILLE | January 2020

It's all the brainchild of entrepreneur on the go Tawana Bain. In addition to AFM, you might know her from the growing and thriving Derby Diversity Business Summit, her multi-day Derby event that's bringing an inclusive spirit to Louisville's greatest tradition. She's also now the owner of Encore on Fourth, the hot spot downtown for those who love live Jazz and R&B, as well as signature cocktails that will make your taste buds stand up and salute. She's a Queen of Concepts and excellent at presiding over their execution, so the opening of a second store has had him and her fashionistas buzzing. While the new location features the same sort of fashion forward flair that the style conscious have been loving straight from the jump at the original AFM, the new store also features a business casual flavor. Anyone stuck in a rut when it comes to their "work clothes" situation should brace themselves because their wardrobe is about to get rocked. For the ladies, there's a wide array of dresses, rompers, and jumpsuits from brands like Joseph RIbkooff, Latiste, and Yellow Seed. Men can peruse suits in many-a-styles, including far

out floral prints from Bently Fonzworth and three piece classic showstoppers from brands like Paisley and Gray, Bugatti and Robert Lewis. “Individuality is our favorite fashion concept. We understand how our customer wants to look and feel," shared store manager Tielyn Redd, whom you can catch at either location offering on the spot personal styling sessions. A feature that you can't miss at the new Oxmoor store- there's a literal fashion runway, and it's free to use. That is, so long as there doesn't happen to be a fashion show in progress. You can try on what you

like and then feel like a star, strutting the catwalk like the fierce warrior you are inside of AFM's elegant styles. 

IF YOU GO

AFM Threads is conveniently located in both the St. Matthews Mall and the Oxmoor Mall. For more information call (502) 444-1450 or visit afmthreads.com.

We need to move faster; and we can always do more. So we’re never ones to sit back and just take a victory lap. We want to keep pushing the city forward, and our citizens deserve that. That’s what you’ve got to do to really compete. What I want everybody in Louisville thinking is we can compete with any city in the country, and we can beat them. We may not be the biggest, but pound-for-pound we should be the best.

Shaping With the dawning of the new year and a new decade, what better time to take stock of the economic growth and development of our beloved city of Louisville? For the purposes of laying out this “state of the city” in terms of economic achievement, direction, plans and implementation, we consulted with Mayor Greg Fischer and the Mayor’s Office, Greater Louisville Inc., and the Louisville Downtown Partnership. his is also the perfect opportunity to take the pulse of the physical health and wellness of Louisville citizens. To that end, we looked into some Kentucky Derby Festival events that could serve as inspiration and a springboard for getting or staying in shape in 2020. “The overall word I would say is, we’re flourishing,” says Mayor Greg Fischer. In the last decade the city of Louisville has added 83,000 new jobs and over 3,000 new businesses. Since 2014, the city has added more than $14 billion dollars in capital investment, about $1 billion of which has been invested in the west end of Louisville. From Beecher Terrace in the Russell neighborhood to the Norton Sports Health Athletics & Learning Complex to the new YMCA of Greater Louisville at 18th & Broadway, these investments will serve as a catalyst for additional projects and show the commitment of the city and the Louisville Urban League to revitalizing a long-underserved area.

life + style Tourism in Louisville has added so much to the local economy through “bourbonism” and its year-round impact, resulting in an explosion of the hospitality and hotel industries here. As the mayor characterizes it, “We punch way above our weight in hospitality; and the good news is that those are all four and five-star experiences, so we just see really high rates of satisfaction from our tourists.” Rebecca Matheny, Executive Director of the Louisville Downtown Partnership, agrees with how vital hotels, restaurants, and bars are to continuing the downtown Louisville renaissance. She points out that these, along with the ongoing success of the newly redeveloped Kentucky International Convention Center, “do not exist in a vacuum. They all work together.” Rebecca emphasizes the importance of ensuring that these and other street-level businesses are enjoyed responsibly and contribute positively to a downtown that feels clean, fun, and safe for families, as well as the nightlife crowd. Louisville’s employment outlook remains strong. “This year marked our ninth consecutive year of job growth since The Great Recession,” says the mayor. “We’ve seen 19% GDP growth versus 15% for the entire country. Unemployment stays low; and the two

sectors that are leading our job growth are tech industry and advanced manufacturing.” Deana Epperly Karem, Senior Vice President of Economic Growth for Greater Louisville Inc., explains that these two sectors are also intertwined. “Technology and innovation are causing disruption in manufacturing in the best way.” Improvements in efficiency, safety, and lessening impacts on the environment are important for a healthy future in big business. And with an emerging startup culture and density in NuLu particularly, Louisville is poised to help lead the way. Greater Louisville, Inc. is a private, nonprofit, “independent organization that serves as the Metro Chamber of Commerce and economic development leader for the Greater Louisville region.” This region includes not only Louisville and Jeffersontown, but also southern Indiana, and 15 surrounding counties. GLI works to attract businesses large and small, aiding them in site selection, workforce, data, resources, incentives eligibility, introduction facilitation, and more. GLI has a three-part strategy for building big business and the technology sector in the region in 2020. They intend to continue to connect subject matter experts in the industries to pitch their economic development strategies. For three years, their Live in Lou initiative has marketed

and promoted Greater Louisville to talented professionals from all over the country, with great momentum around the online toolkit www.liveinlou.com. Finally, in conjunction with the Mayor’s Office and TEConomy Partners of Columbus, Ohio, GLI is taking a deep dive into a study of our current and future innovation economy, focusing on economic development and informed public policy. As Louisville upscales in the areas of technology and big business, with announcements such as the Microsoft regional artificial intelligence hub and Future of Work initiative, so does it seek to “upskill” its workforce. This is important to offset those traditional manufacturing jobs that may be lost to automation. To shore up the foundation for education and job training and attract and retain a skilled workforce, the city must continue to make investments in affordable, stable housing, the completion of our regional library system, and the continued development of built environments and “edge neighborhoods” such as the new soccer stadium district, Butchertown, Paristown Pointe, NuLu, Portland, and Russell. The Mayor’s Office and Louisville Forward seek to integrate their to economic and community development “by combining business attraction, expansion and retention activities, and talent and workforce attraction, with all of the city's real estate development, land use and planning and design functions to present a unified solution for job growth and quality of place.” Their focus is on five business clusters: Advanced Manufacturing, Business Services, Food and Beverage, Lifelong Wellness and Aging Care, and Logistics and Ecommerce. “Those are five areas where we think we're either the best in the world or can be the best in the world.” The mayor goes on to say, “So we have workforce development strategies in each of those clusters.” With regard to real estate development, land use, city planning, and public spaces, these are what give the city and the region character. Whether it is Class A office space occupancy, our beautiful Olmsted-designed parks system, or landscaping and art installations, this attention to our physical surroundings contributes to a safer and more positive environment for natives, citizens, and tourists alike. These along with our thriving arts communities and institutions with dynamic leaders make up the soul of the city and add to its authenticity, diversity, and inclusion.

The mayor wanted to be sure to include our chefs and culinary arts in this category. “They work with each other. They’re not primadonnas. They’re all kind of elevating each other’s performance.” Looking at the month of September alone, with major events such as WorldFest, TRIFESTA (Hometown Rising, Bourbon & Beyond, Louder Than Life), and culminating in the St. James Court Art Show the first weekend in October, Louisville truly shines as a destination for culture. The biggest celebration of all remains the Kentucky Derby Festival. This is where we turned for a discussion of the physical health and wellness of our citizens. Tara Jo Thomas is an Ambassador for the miniMarathon/ Marathon/Relay. She describes herself as a cheerleader for the KDF races as she not only spreads the word about her personal experiences running, but also guides prospective runners through their training programs. Registration for the races opened briefly in the summer and again in September and continues into the spring. The Norton Sports Health Training Program begins in January and supports everyone from novices to experienced marathoners. all with the support of medical professionals. “Kentucky is statistically so unhealthy.” But Tara says that anyone who finds the courage to start and gathers with all the other walkers and/or runners will get “chills at the starting line” and “feel like Louisville is giving (them) a giant hug.”

Homes for Heroes® is dedicated to serving and giving back to firefighters, law enforcement, military (active, reserves, and veterans), healthcare workers, EMS, and teachers when you buy, sell, or refinance a home.

And that as they enter Churchill Downs for a portion of the race it is so inspiring and brings to mind the athleticism of the amazing horses that run there. Similarly, the KDF Tour de Lou helps get the city moving. Andy Murphy, President of the Louisville Bicycle Club, believes “We’ve got to get people up off the couch!” He also encourages beginners to join the more seasoned cyclists. The Tour de Lou has 20, 35, and 62.1371 (100km metric century) mile ride options. With all the improvements to biking infrastructure and the parks system, this form of exercise is more accessible and attainable than ever. The training program for Tour de Lou begins Sunday, February 22, 2020 and offers Saturday and Sunday rides for eight weeks leading up to race day. The rides increase by five miles each week. Last year saw over 100 new cyclists show up for the first day. The future of the city of Louisville and its citizenry grows brighter every day. This message from our mayor, Greg Fischer, sums it all up: “We need to move faster; and we can always do more. So we’re never ones to sit back and just take a victory lap. We want to keep pushing the city forward, and our citizens deserve that. That’s what you’ve got to do to really compete. What I want everybody in Louisville thinking is we can compete with any city in the country, and we can beat them. We may not be the biggest, but pound-for-pound we should be the best.” 

Chri ie BRINKLEY A SPARKLING EXAMPLE PHOTOS BY CRISTOPHER BREDA

C

hristie Brinkley, model, actress and entrepreneur, is known across the globe for her legendary beauty. But her passion for helping others and the planet is what makes her beautiful to us. Her involvement in multiple nonprofit organizations has earned her awards and honors from The American Heart Association, Make-A-Wish Foundation, March of Dimes and many others. While she has been the face behind some of the world’s top brands, Brinkley launched very own prosecco brand, Bellissima, last year. The 100% organic line offers 3 varieties: a D.O.C. brut, a zero sugar sparkling wine and a sparkling rosé. Creating Bellissima made perfect sense for this health-conscious lifelong vegetarian and environmental rights activist. She advocates that eating organic is better for our bodies and for our planet, and her brand ensures that it’s easy to do. At 65-years-young, Brinkley is busier (and more beautiful!) than ever. In addition to Bellissima, this multi-hyphenate also has a skincare line, hair extension line and eyewear line. This past fall, she had a tough break – literally. Just a few days before she was to hit the stage on Dancing with the Stars, Brinkley fell during rehearsal and broke her arm. (Her daughter Sailor was able to step in to replace her for the season.) Despite the injury, Brinkley barely missed a beat, bringing Bellissima to store shelves across the nation. While she has graced the cover of over 500 magazines in her career, we think Brinkley looks the best on TOPS. Keep reading to learn about her new line, her top health and beauty tips, and her New Year’s resolutions.

What inspired you to create the line? I have always been passionate about champagne and prosecco but I always thought that all wines should be made organically. Grapes are always showing up on the “dirty dozen” list of fruits and vegetables with the most chemicals on them. In a world already inundated with chemicals – in everything from frying pans to carpets, in the clothing we wear, on our lawns – we need to try and limit our exposure in every way that we can. In choosing drinks that are organic, you are making a much healthier choice for your body as well as for the planet.

What is your favorite Bellissima cocktail recipe? I have two that are neck and neck for first place! My Bella Sprizz is for sure one of them. A Bella Sprizz is so delicious! It is mixing Bellissima prosecco with my Bella Sprizz aperitivo, which tastes like the popular Aperol Spritz… only I can offer my Bella Sprizz at half the price. When you make it with my zero sugar sparkling wine, it is less guilty of a pleasure! My other favorite cocktail is one of the endless ways to make frosé using Bellissima. This summer at my home, we were always freezing grapefruit juice into ice cubes and putting them in the blender with the sparkling rosé, chunks of fresh watermelon, sometimes a dash of vegan, organic, sorbet and blending it all to perfection. It is delicious!

Have any resolutions for 2020? My New Year’s resolution is to make sure I take time from work to relax and squeeze in hopefully a little more travel. And learn a new language! And of course, I want to physically get out and do more work for the environment: plant trees, pick up plastic, do what I can as much as I can to help our planet in crisis. 

TIPS FROM CHRISTIE! A longtime heath, beauty and fitness guru, Brinkley wrote and illustrated Christie Brinkley’s Outdoor Beauty and Fitness Book in 1983. Her 2015 New York Times Best Selling book Timeless Beauty offers guidance on what to eat, how to apply makeup and what to wear to look and feel fabulous. We asked Christie to share some of her favorite health, beauty and wellness tips with TOPS readers. Here’s what she had to say:

As with alcohol, moderation and balance are key to a healthy life.

Eat organic when you can. It is better for your body and the earth!

Good nutrition, regular exercise and getting enough sleep are all the foundation to a healthy, beautiful life.

Never underestimate the power of laughter and smiling! I believe it releases powerful hormones that are so good for us. It is the most fun beauty secret I know! A smile will brighten up any face and light up any room.

A happy attitude is both beautiful and youthful, so make sure you take time to relax and enjoy! Literally and figuratively, lift your spirits!

PAIR IT!

Having a dinner party? Creating a pairing of food and wine that works in perfect harmony can make every element of the meal sing. A dish that perfectly complements your chosen wine brings forward the more subtle notes of the wine while simultaneously enhancing the individual elements of the food it’s served alongside. Wine pairing is something of an art form, so we turned to an expert: Barry Manning, director of wine sales at Kentucky Eagle, Inc. Manning selected dishes to pair perfectly with Christie Brinkley’s Bellissima wines. Your dinner guests will love the bright, fresh ingredients!

BELLISSIMA SPARKLING ROSÉ WINE Tasting notes: Made from 100% organic Pinot Grigio grapes, this is an elegant, bright rosé, with hints of strawberry and grapefruit, and a soft, persistent foam. Pair with: Sea Bass Crudo Salad! Zippy lime and cilantro crudo of succulent sea bass, atop fresh torn mixed greens and garnished with a chopped marcona almonds, ginger and dried cranberries.

BELLISSIMA PROSECCO D.O.C. BRUT Tasting notes: Brut is the driest (i.e. least sugary) version of Prosecco, and Bellissima’s is aromatic and elegant, with delicate scents of green apple and freshly baked bread. Pair with: Stuffed “Pear” Croustade! Pear shaped bowl of puff pastry stuffed with sliced cinnamon and/or cardamom poached pear (poached in the Prosecco is great) topped with tangy crumbled goat cheese, crowned with candied walnuts and shaved coconut, drizzled with just a little white balsamic vinaigrette, and a dash of cardamom and lemon zest to finish.

Cocktail time! Bellissima’s Sgroppino is a perfect sip for any cocktail hour or after dinner wind down. Tip: make your own lemon sorbet for the ultimate refreshment!

INCREDIENTS:

PREPARATION:

½ c. chilled Bellissima Zero Sugar Sparkling Wine

Pour Bellissima and vodka into a Prosecco flute, then scoop in lemon sorbet.

1 T chilled vodka 1 scoop frozen lemon sorbet

A Southern Indiana family wanted to modernize their 20-plus-year-old home, and Lisa Lynn of Lisa Lynn Designs knew she was up for the enormous job. The designer worked with the New Albany homeowners and contractor to gut the entire main floor, creating a more crisp and open floor plan for the 4-bedroom, 4-1-2 bath family home.

The home now also boasts a dashing dining room with crystal wallpaper on the ceiling, glistening through a grand gold chandelier, walk-in closet fit for a queen, and a marvelous master bath. “They had a lot of faith in us,” Lisa says about flipping the old house plan on its head. “They were quite excited about the prospective changes.” Switching to all new furniture, countertops, custom window treatments, cabinetry, rugs, accessories and flooring can seem daunting to some clients. That’s why our clients hire us,” Lisa smiles.

ith the flip of a coin, the underdog Superfoods have won the toss and elect to receive. Play starts with a big return by Lueberry Açaí. Although primarily known for their colorful, nutrient-packed açaí bowls, supertoast, and smoothies, Lueberry seasonal salads have been coming on strong. Their Classic Southwestern Salad is made with mixed greens, grape tomatoes, corn, black beans, red onion, bell pepper, cucumber, red cabbage, and egg, with dressing on the side of course. Be sure to check out their salad offerings closer to game day to make your carryout selection. In the midwinter time, Lueberry is first and goal with comforting and restorative chicken bone broth and a mildly fiery and savory red pepper tomato soup. Bring them on home with some salads and score a touchdown for your willpower.

This one is piled high with all the meats and serves up to fifteen of your famished friends. As a member of the US Pizza Team, Vic DiOrio competed at the World Pizza Games in Italy. In addition to their award-winning pizza, DiOrio’s has its versatile “wingbacks”, too. Football without chicken wings is practically unthinkable. Sharky’s Wings come mild, hot, or Fire in the Hole, and are served with celery and your choice of bleu cheese or ranch dressing. Want to please everyone? They make their move with homemade chips and salsa, cheese dip, and Mummy Shrimp. Gustavo’s catered taco, burrito, enchilada, and quesadilla bars cover plenty of yardage. But Gustavo Reyes’ recommendation of the fajita bar gets them into the end zone with beef, chicken, or a mix, green bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, Mexican rice, beans, flour or corn tortillas, sour cream, guacamole, and cheese. They throw for a first down with oven-style buffalo wings and a meat lover’s pizza with a cauliflower crust. But it’s the “Swachos” catching the Hail Mary and doing the touchdown dance with sweet potato waffle fries covered in pulled pork, cheese, jalapeños, and Greek yogurt. Shaping the Future of Cosmetic Plastic Surgery in Louisville

ing to my community over and over, a better way to approach common cosmetic issues. But I also hope that in my relentless pursuit of timeless beauty and self-restoration, that I have helped Louisvillians explore their best selves through new and innovative surgical and non-surgical techniques we haven’t always had access to in this town. I trained in Dallas, and I have big ideas like many of my Texan friends and mentors, whose progressive and thoughtful insights into our specialty shaped my own surgical thoughts and plans. It was instilled in me early on that in changing the human form, it is as important to preserve classic and natural beauty as it is to provide safe and practically affordable care in ways that thoroughly and consistently improve upon old techniques. These surgeons taught me by example and by daily practice how to think and care for patients in very unique ways. As a result of the cumulative efforts of these great thinkers and mentors in both General Surgery and Plastic Surgery, I came to believe that the best surgeons and specialists relentlessly seek innovation and new ways to deal with old problems, which are timeless in their own right. Leaving a legacy of new thought, new techniques, new friends, new patients, and new “shapes” is a fun way to spend a career. So below is a short list of some of the most exciting new technologies I have brought to you to “shape” Louisville.

s I prepare to enter the 26th year of my surgical practice, I think back upon circumstances and events that have had the most impact in “shaping” my career as a cosmetic plastic surgeon...fitting that this month’s TOPS is devoted to “Shaping Louisville.” I feel lucky to have chosen a career that combines both art and science, so that I can use whatever surgical talent and insight I may have to positively impact the lives of others. I hope I have done this through the years with a style and a flare that is all my own, shaped as it has been by my mentors and past patients. Even the name of my chosen specialty of Plastic Surgery denotes the notion of “shaping” the human form... and no, the word “plastic” does not really mean “plastic” as in credit card (!), but it is derived from the Greek word “plastikos”, which means to mold or to form...to shape. Whether it is the male or the female face, breast, or body, I work daily to reduce the negative, enhance the positive and to bring all into a better balance, shape and propor-

rittnay Judy never considered herself an exerciser throughout her early life. But, when she and her husband, Charlie moved to North Carolina from West Virginia seven years ago, she says driving past a parking lot changed her mind. In that parking lot, she says she saw a few mothers working out together; that comradery made want her to change her body and career direction. Brittnay and her husband are now proud owners of the fitness facility that began in that parking lot, a franchise called Burn Boot Camp. Back in Charlotte, North Carolina, the couple knew they wanted to go somewhere that would be a great starting place for their branches, and therefore, Louisville became the spot. In 2017, Burn Boot Camp on Hurstbourne Lane opened and then in March 2018, the Crestwood location was formed, and finally, in October 2019, the Prospect location was created. “The founding principles (of Burn)

are to make the mom healthier and happier and the family will follow,” Brittnay says. The success stories from Burn Boot Camp line the ways as the welcoming “community” practices high intensity, core and strength exercises, as well as athletic conditioning. Brittnay’s gym has quick, 45-min boot camp classes that are “always harder, never the same,” Brittnay says. They have focus meetings, one-on-ones with trainers, body diagnostics and members make goals and track their progress. But there aren’t any machines, because there’s a sign on the wall that says, “I don’t use machines, I am one.”

says. “The community here is huge,” she says. “They motivate and inspire each other and rally around each other.” Burn Boot Camp is “really nice for women and children,” she says, as the gym has free childcare for mothers. There are modified pregnancy workouts, too, to keep mothers in shape until their due dates.

There are group training sessions that can be modified for “any client, any injury, any fitness level,” she says. “We care about our clients as individuals. We modify for anything.”

At the beginning of a new year, many women want to change things about their body, confidence or mental well-being. Brittnay says her boot camp is great for anyone who wants to achieve a healthier lifestyle at any time of the year, but a special 6-week fitness and nutrition challenge called Raise the Bar will take place at the beginning of 2020 for $99. Members do not have to sign up in advance--just show up and work out.

The gym’s 500-plus members are mostly women (there are some classes that allow men) who care about each other, Brittnay

Dr. Hope Zoeller HOPE LLC HOPE@HOPEFORLEADERS.COM HOPEFORLEADERS.COM After 13 years of success in the corporate world, Dr. Hope Zoeller discovered her true passion: developing leaders. “True leadership is not about what you accomplish, but what you help others achieve,” Hope says. “Because many people have helped me get where I am today, I feel a responsibility to do the same for others. The legacy I would like to leave as a leader is making a positive difference in the life of each person I meet. “ HOPE stands for Helping Other People Excel. After holding a career as a learning and development supervisor with a Fortune 100 company, Hope recognized the need for a more integrated, customized approach to working with clients of all sizes. She founded her own company to make real impacts on the quality of leadership and work-life for her clients. “Over the last 10 years, we have greatly expanded our coaching, professional development, assessment tools, and support services to better help implement the core IP we teach,” Hope says. “Each company is unique, but to go a step further, sometimes the individual applications of that customized training need a coach’s hand to shepherd the skills into direct, real-word application. We customize our professional development and leadership coaching to maximize implementation and impact. None of us arrived at where we are today without the guidance and support of others. Flights to Fight Cancer “Let’s see more smiles, more singing, more silliness and more survivors.” This directive is found on the website of the Steven Vanover Foundation. BY KATHIE STAMPS • COURTESY PHOTO

S

teven Vanover was 24 when he passed away on March 12, 2015, from a rare form of sarcoma. He battled DSRCT, desmoplastic small round cell tumor, for 15 months at Norton Cancer Institute but never lost his own ability to smile, sing and be silly. Two months later, friends and family got together to start a scholarship in Steven’s honor at the University of Louisville J.B. Speed School of Engineering. The effort quickly grew into a full-fledged nonprofit foundation with a 15-member board of directors and dozens of volunteers, all of whom are supporting efforts to eliminate sarcoma, an uncommon type of cancer that starts in bones or connective tissues. “We’re here to make a difference in the world of sarcoma through community engagement and fundraising,” says SVF board president Lauren Raque. She was Steven’s fiancée.

To fund two major projects at Norton Healthcare and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the SVF has created the inaugural “Flights to Fight Cancer.” The fundraiser takes place in February at Mellwood Art and Entertainment Center will feature flights of craft beer, bourbon and wine. Beverage flights will also be accompanied by flights of food, to showcase the culinary talents of multiple local partners who are creating appetizers, main courses and desserts. There will also be live and silent auctions, a bourbon pull and dancing during the evening.

We have created the Steven Vanover Foundation to preserve the memory of someone who truly embodied what it means to live and love fiercely, and to raise money to support the cutting edge research that could bring about better treatment options and a cure for sarcoma. – S T EV EN V A N O V ER. O RG Michael, Amy, and Steven Vanover.

“As we’ve grown our impact and commitments, we knew it was time to throw an even larger event that could unite the Louisville community around the cause,” Lauren says. Flights of food and beverage mean gala-goers will have options, which is a core value of the Steven Vanover Foundation. “Just as we want to raise money so that cancer patients can have treatment options and the option to get great care close to home, we want our guests to have options as well,” says Lauren. The Flights to Fight Cancer gala will provide funding for sarcoma patients in a couple of different ways. One is in Louisville, where the Steven Vanover Foundation has gifted a $250,000 genomics lab technology to Norton Cancer Institute. This in-house technology, “Next Generation Sequencing,” means physicians are getting faster lab results to help them determine personalized treatment options for patients. At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, the Steven Vanover Foundation has donated more than $300,000 to support a clinical trial led by Shakeel Modak, M.D., one of the only trials in the world studying treatments for the type of DSRCT sarcoma Steven had. More research funds are needed, of course.

Lauren’s sister, Krissy Raque, is also on the board of directors and has been involved with the organization from the beginning. “To me, the Steven Vanover Foundation is providing hope our community and in our country,” Krissy says. “It’s the hope that no one with sarcoma or another rare cancer has to hear the words “we’ve run out of options.” It’s hope that a sarcoma diagnosis doesn’t mean that a young person has to travel far away to get the care they need. And it’s remembering Steven’s enthusiasm for life that drives us to approach this work with a sense of hope.” Steven Vanover survived just over two weeks after being told that there were no more options for treatment. “In those final 16 days, we realized that we needed to carry on the grace that he showed during his battle with DSRCT,” Lauren says. “To see someone you love go through a disease with virtually no treatment options is heartbreaking. Our goal has been to help those who have been affected by cancer, and make sure they never have to hear those same words Steven heard on February 25, 2015. If we can prevent this 16day stint for others, we would be thrilled. We would be thrilled to say that we lived out the same grace that Steven showed in his final days.” 

ith two dental practices in Kentucky, Signature Smiles in Louisville and Designing Smiles in Frankfort, Dr. Arlene Baluyut can’t help but laugh a little when asked about her work/life balance. While this clearly presents a challenge, she faces each day with a passion for life, as she has for herself and her family over the full course of her career. Dr. Baluyut and the two new associates who have recently joined her practices rotate between the two locations. Dr. B, as her patients fondly refer to her, is passionate about improving her patients’ smiles and, by extension, their confidence, self-esteem, and overall health. Running the two dental practices is demanding, especially considering her dedication to staying on top of new techniques, technology, and equipment options. Dr. B depends on Operations Director Lisa Materna as her right hand, tasked with achieving business objectives and creating an office culture that promotes staff commitment to her vision and mission. Lisa keeps her organized and on schedule with the many demands on her time and talent. For a closer look into how this business owner, career woman, and SuperMom has managed to juggle it all for 34 years, we begin with her own upbringing. Dr. Arlene Baluyut was born and raised in Manila, Philippines and lived there until the age of nine when she and her family immigrated to the United States. She witnessed the hard work of her parents, who strove to give their children an opportunity for a better education and life in the USA. Her parents’ dedication to serving humanity in healthcare inspired her eventual career choice. Her father was a urologist and her mother was a nurse. The family lived in Chicago before they moved to Marion, Indiana and then settled in Peru, Indiana where she attended high school and graduated in 1978. As bright as she was as a student, she was equally as gifted in athletics, playing basketball, tennis and volleyball. She attended the University of Kentucky on a tennis scholarship. However, her good friend, UK men’s basketball All-American point guard Kyle Macy, and his father

convinced her to play as a walk-on for the UK Lady Wildcats. Dr. B played on the University of Kentucky women’s basketball team for two years until she tore her ACL. Following her knee injury, she threw herself into her pre-med/ pre-dental program and was accepted into the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry after only three years of undergraduate studies. She ultimately chose dentistry because she loves not only the science, but the artistry involved. After graduating dental school with highest honors, she did a general practice residency and became the chief resident at the UK Chandler Medical Center from 1985-1987. She raised three children: Ryan (32), Kellie (30), and Logan (27). As dedicated as she was to the development of her career, Dr. B was determined to balance that with continuous involvement in the lives and interests of her children. Dr. B and her children were active in the YMCA; and she coached each of her children in youth sports leagues, including basketball, through their freshman year. She coached basketball in the Amateur Athletic Union and at Franklin County High School. Her daughter’s high school team won 3 state championships. Dr. B continued coaching basketball in UK Club Team Level Sports, winning an NCBBA Championship with her daughter on the team. Dr. B’s oldest son, Ryan, now works for the NBA team, the Golden State Warriors, and her daughter, Kellie, is an event planner in San Francisco. Her youngest son, Logan, is a captain in the Air Force and a dentist stationed at Andrews Air Force Base. Getting the whole gang back together is no easy feat. But when they do, they enjoy sports, the outdoors, and travel. Dr. B also serves on the board of the YMCA at Norton Commons and teaches children’s liturgy at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church. She lives by the motto “Work hard. Play hard.” Her sons and daughter are surely following in her footsteps. As Ryan, told us, “Mom gave me an invaluable model for work ethic and undoubtedly has been my bridge to the game of basketball. I am living the dream she helped shape. I could not be more grateful for her instilling that passion.” 

Bronze Ceiling

JULIA BLACKBURN DUKE [1875-1961]

Developing a trusted relationship

Across the country there is a growing movement to recognize noteworthy women and their historical contributions through public monuments. Unfortunately, less than 7% of the 5,193 monuments in the United States presently recognize women. We are about to change that statistic with the “Breaking the Bronze Ceiling” initiative. Each month TOPS will feature a Kentucky woman who impacted the Women’s Rights Movement. For more information visit breakingthebronzeceiling.com.

ulia Blackburn Duke was born July 23, 1875, the youngest of five children and only daughter to Civil War Confederate Brigadier General Basil Wilson Duke and Henrietta Morgan “Tommy” Duke. Her father was born in Georgetown, Kentucky and eventually practiced law in St. Louis, Missouri. With the start of the Civil War, he enlisted as a Second Lieutenant in the Lexington Rifles under the command of Tommy’s brother, Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan. As a Colonel with the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry, Wilson was captured in the raid into Indiana and Ohio. In 1864, he was promoted to Brigadier General and served in southwest Virginia. As the war ended, he was with the party that accompanied Confederate President Jefferson Davis in his infamous attempt at escape with the Confederate treasury. As fans of the History Channel show “Civil War Gold” will recall, legend has it Jefferson Davis managed to abscond with and hide wagons full of gold bars and coins before being captured by Union forces, despite being disguised as a woman. Julia’s great great grandfather was Colonel Thomas Marshall. He was a land surveyor and colleague and close friend of George Washington, High Sheriff of Fauquier County in Virginia, and superintendent of the Lord Fairfax estate. He was also a lieutenant in the French & Indian War, member of the 1776 Virginia Convention, and organized the Culpepper Minutemen.
