Acknowledgement of Country

Today and every day, we acknowledge the Bunurong People as the Traditional Owners of the land we live and learn on, here at Toorak College. With open hearts we pay our respects to Elders past and present. We recognise their ongoing connection to the land and the bay, Nairm.
Our students, teachers and families are knowledge seekers. As we listen to the stories of the First Nations, we will question and reflect in order to continue our reconciliation journey.

Principal’s Message
Empowering students since 1874, we are proud of our heritage, attuned to our changing world, and focused on ensuring an exceptional education for future generations.
At Toorak College you can learn without limitations or ceilings, you can stumble and understand we are behind you, you can be brave and push yourself outside of your comfort zone, you can be bold knowing that anything is possible and you can be yourself - proud of who you are.
We encourage our students to think critically and creatively and to be resilient and confident in their endeavours. We ensure a consistent academic and personal growth approach throughout our students’ journey from ELC through to Year 12.
Far from just a place of learning, education takes many forms for our students. Be it social development, moral development or cognitive development, the journey our students travel is complex, varied and completely individual.
As Principal of this wonderful School, I am so humbled to witness daily the spirit and courage that our students show. They display these attributes towards each other, to their teachers and to themselves. It is this positivity and encouragement that truly enriches our School and promotes such an empowering environment.
We look forward to welcoming your family to Toorak College and working together to deliver forward-thinking educational experiences for our School community.

To support our Vision to develop aspiring young people with confidence and character, and strengthen our mission of empowering our students through academic and personal growth so they will thrive in their future, our Project Shine program represents a whole school approach to growth and development.
Our overarching educational philosophy, Project Shine, sits atop four pillars - Academic Growth, Personal Growth, Empower and Thrive - to create a holistic and enriching learning and wellbeing experience for students. Each pillar is viewed as integral to developing young people with confidence and character and are equally important in a young person’s development.
Project Shine is shaped by educational neuroscience, developmental psychology and the future world of work to inform decisions in a child’s educational journey that enable skills such as collaboration, problem-solving and innovation that supports them to thrive in the world beyond our gates.
Individual growth along each of these pillars is underpinned by the focus and support of developmental milestones in social, cognitive, moral and emotional development that occur throughout a young person’s life and enable them to become curious and self-aware individuals.
See how each of our offerings at Toorak align with these four pillars in the educational journey of all our students.
Each pillar is viewed as integral to developing young people with confidence and character and are equally important in a young person’s development.”

Learning Enhancement
USING DATA
One of the biggest changes to the world of education lies in our ability to effectively access, learn and respond to data. Toorak College is a leader in the educational landscape of data analysis. Data is frequently gathered on student learning and growth to enable a developing picture to emerge on each of our students.
1 Content and concept knowledge
The use of data ensures that we create a truly personalised and individualised program for every student. It also ensures that every student is being mapped and tracked, taking the guesswork out of education. Our use of data looks at three main fields:
2 Skill development
3
Self-reflection goals and growth patterns
SUPPORT AND EXTENSION
One of our specialties at Toorak College is the emphasis on personalised learning programs. We believe every year level is important, which is why we have small class sizes in every class, every day. This allows us to truly tailor learning to suit the individual. Through an emphasis on data gathering, monitoring and tracking we aim to provide at least one year’s growth for each student, every year they are at school. With so many social, emotional and cognitive areas of growth developing at any one time, there are often occasions where our students need further academic support or extension.
Learning Enhancement at Toorak College caters for students who require support or enrichment. Our specialised team works in partnership with the student’s family as well as a team of internal professionals to ensure the program being implemented for the student is outcome based and goal orientated. Where appropriate, the team will also communicate with external professionals working with the student.
Students who qualify for our support program will receive an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which clearly communicates the strategies to be implemented to support the students’ learning in the classroom. These plans are shared and discussed with the student (if appropriate), their family and staff working directly with the student.
Our Head of Learning Enhancement has oversight of these programs and is supported by qualified Learning Enhancement specialists teachers. Support for students in Years 7 - 9 who meet the criteria may take the form of; in class support in English and/or Mathematics classes, small group classes for English and/or Mathematics and assistance with organisation and completing homework. Students in Year 10-12 may receive help with organisation and time management. All students are invited to attend ‘Homework Hub’ an afterschool homework and study assistance group.
Enrichment is catered for beyond the classroom context and revolves around extension of thinking, application, quality of argument, maturity of engagement with material and additional opportunities. Extension happens in all subjects, not just English and Mathematics, and is supported all the way through to VCE level where students may select to apply for a University Enhancement subject in Year 12.
INTENSIVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTRE (IELC)

Toorak College has long been the leader in international education in Australia and was one of the first schools in the country to establish international connections and these are proudly supported in our environment every day.
Toorak has taken its decades of expertise in English Language Acquisition for school students and created a bespoke model of immersive language acquisition for all international students.
Toorak College supports students with their language acquisition by working with each student prior to entry to their mainstream class and front loading them with the vocabulary, definitions and knowledge required for the class. Students are then easily able to follow the mainstream teacher and classroom activities, giving them more confidence to participate in the class and accelerating their learning and language acquisition rapidly.

Toorak deeply understands the needs of international students and the way in which they acquire language as well as the need for each student to build confidence in speaking, learning and living in an English environment. The Immersive Language Acquisition program supported by our IELC is just another way that Toorak College sets itself apart from all other schools with its unparalleled support for international students.

Toorak College students access mainstream classes from day one and they always have the support of the onsite Intensive English Language Centre (IELC) until their graduation. This unique blended learning model accelerates their academic journey.
Personal Growth
Adolescence is a pivotal stage in a young woman’s life, marked by self-discovery, growth, and the development of self-esteem. At Toorak College, we understand the unique challenges that adolescent girls face during this critical period. Our commitment to nurturing their self-esteem goes beyond academics; it’s about building strong, confident, and empowered young women. Research conducted by Garnita Pleas (2022), shows educators play a vital role in the development of girls’ self esteem & wellbeing. Four key themes were identified in this research which showed different ways educators can successfully support adolescent girls’ development of self esteem.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH COMMUNICATION
The first theme observed by Pleas (2022) was the importance of ‘building relationships through communication’. Effective communication is the cornerstone of healthy relationships and self-esteem development. At Toorak College, we prioritise open and honest communication between teachers, students, and parents. We believe that when girls feel heard and understood, they are more likely to develop a positive self-image leading to an increase in academic and social engagement and overall wellbeing.
PROVIDING GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH CHALLENGES
Pleas (2022) identified that helping adolescent girls through tumultuous times filled with personal, academic, and social challenges can improve their self-esteem. At Toorak College we are dedicated to helping girls navigate these difficulties with confidence and resilience. The term challenge can often be associated with a negative connotation, perhaps something that will be difficult and unfulfilling. In reality, challenging ourselves and stretching beyond our capabilities is how we grow and develop as individuals. We see value in helping our students to flip the narrative around difficult and unfamiliar situations so that they develop an attitude that has them comfortable in a challenging space because challenges provide opportunities for growth. In order to do this well, we focus on helping students identify the right amount of stretch for them to build their capacities while providing that safety net to catch them through our supportive and connected school culture.
EMPOWERING GIRLS WITH AFFIRMATIONS, INSPIRATION, EMPATHY, AND COMPASSION
The second theme identified by Pleas (2022) focused on empowering girls through affirmations, inspiration, empathy and compassion. Self-esteem is deeply intertwined with a sense of self-worth and empowerment. We employ various strategies to empower our students and help them recognise their strengths.
The first step in the Toorak College design thinking process is ‘empathise’. How do you understand what motivates others, what thoughts, feelings and emotions they may be experiencing and why? The meaning of empathy and how to show compassion is explicitly taught as a strength in the Agile Learning program. It is the foundation for the direction of student design projects along with the driving force behind the service activities students choose to engage in.
ENCOURAGEMENT OF LEADERSHIP AND ROLE MODELLING
Teachers play an important role in influencing our students by providing real-life examples of leadership in action, and serve as a source of inspiration, guidance and motivation for aspiring leaders. At Toorak College, we believe that every girl has the potential to be a leader and we actively foster leadership qualities so all students develop the mindset needed to confidently make a positive impact within the community. We recognise that leadership and positive influence comes in many forms and we encourage students to practise and build on their skills through the many opportunities offered to them.

Student Wellbeing
CONSISTENCY
Every morning begins with a wellbeing tutorial where every student is seen by their classmates and teachers. It is a time to set priorities for the day and ensure each student starts with a positive mindset and a purpose for what is to be achieved, enabling their own self confidence and sense of self efficacy.
WELLNESS
Our curriculum offers students a deep understanding of themes surrounding health and wellbeing, ensuring our students are equipped with a range of strategies and are informed of the risks and responsibilities, which are taught by qualified teachers in this specialised subject area.
RESILIENCE
We believe in empowering our students to be in control of their own strategies for overcoming adversity, obstacles and difficult situations. Our school psychologists, wellbeing staff and teachers guide our students with techniques and advice. Our students are then encouraged to use areas of the School to enact their strategies. We desire our young people to learn that they are in control of who they are and who they surround themselves with.
FLOURISHING
Flourishing is a self-reflection tool that uses a positive psychology approach to assess the degree to which individuals have developed the “pillars” of good mental health. The data provided by the survey allows students to map and track their own emotions and behaviours, both positive and negative, so that they can look at the things that influence their mental health and wellbeing and start conversations that can then initiate mentoring.
Emotions
Engagement

The Toorak Exhibition showcases the students’ artwork and is a highlight of the School calendar.
CLUBS
Students have the opportunity to create their own pathway by joining a club that they are passionate about. Being part of a club also enables students to work collaboratively with students from other year levels, strengthen friendships with those who share common interests and demonstrate leadership skills. These include:
Challenge Experiences
At
Toorak we believe that camps are an essential part of a student’s development. They provide an opportunity for our students to put their skills into practice, especially in areas such as resilience, stepping out of their comfort zone, building relationships, communication and leadership.
Camps are crucial for student development, offering hands-on learning, fostering independence, enhancing social skills, promoting physical, social and emotional wellbeing, and creating lifelong memories. They provide a unique blend of education and adventure that prepares students for life’s diverse challenges.
YEAR 7
The focus of the Year 7 Camp is to support students through a crucial transition period, helping them adapt to new academic and social environments while building connections and forming new relationships with their peers and teachers. Central to this experience are the wellbeing group and year-level connection activities, designed to foster a sense of belonging and collective identity. The camp emphasises connection, collaboration, and teamwork, encouraging students to work outside their comfort zones. By engaging in challenges that require problem-solving, collaboration, and adventure, students develop independence and resilience, essential skills for their future growth and development.
YEAR 8
The focus of the Year 8 Camp is to immerse students in adventure while fostering resilience and independence. Safety is a top priority as students engage in outdoor education activities designed to build essential skills. The camp emphasises discovering, appreciating, and learning how to respect the environment for years to come. Through various challenge activities, students develop a deeper understanding and respect for the natural world, while enhancing their personal growth and development.
YEAR 9
For our Year 9 students our camps cultivate a sense of service and global citizenship among students. Beyond Boundaries provides opportunities to travel interstate or overseas, exposing students to diverse cultures and environments. Emphasising resilience and independence, the camp fosters new connections and promotes an appreciation for cultural diversity. Preparation activities, including the City Experience, equip students with the skills and knowledge needed for a successful camp, enriching their personal growth and broadening their global perspectives.
YEAR 10-12
For students in Years 10-12, the focus is on leadership and personal development. Optional experiences like internships, community service projects, and cultural exchanges expand perspectives and cultivate interests, offering opportunities for growth. Activities to build resilience and independence are crucial. Service projects foster global citizenship and community responsibility, while interstate or overseas travel enhances cultural understanding. Encouraging new connections, teamwork, and collaboration through group projects and leadership workshops as well as Year 11 to Year 12 transition retreats, prepares students for future challenges, ensuring they are well-equipped for their future pathways.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
We believe education goes beyond academics; it’s about cultivating resilient individuals ready to lead and positively impact the world.

Leadership Opportunities
At all levels of the School, students can be leaders through their actions.
We understand that we are not born leaders, it is how we respond to our experiences that makes us leaders. Student Leadership offers opportunities for young people to serve their school and the community. Through these experiences they are able to learn about making a difference and what can be achieved they are prepared to have a voice and to work hard.
Students learn the importance of having goals and then deciphering what is necessary to achieve them. Working collaboratively with others and understanding that it requires the participation of many to achieve outcomes is a valuable lesson that can be acquired through Student Leadership. Student leaders also learn the importance of being role models and that one’s behaviour influences others. Through Student Leadership the skills of listening and building rapport with the student body are acquired. From the successes and failures achieved through being a leader in a school, students obtain valuable skills that they take with them into the future.
At Toorak College we aim to ensure that students have the ability to grow as leaders with explicit teaching around leadership styles, public speaking, conflict resolution and team work. This is taught through curriculum, in Agile Learning classes and throughout the senior years.
SRC REPRESENTATIVES
The Student Representative Council (SRC) is made up of three elected representatives from each year level. SRC representatives are elected through a process of written application, speech and voting by their peers. The SRC members are supported in their leadership role by the Head of Student Experiences and Leadership and led by the Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl.
WELLBEING TUTORIAL LEADERS
Each tutorial group elects a leader/s who liaise closely with their Tutor and Head of Year in organising tutorial and year level activities as well as being a key voice in communication with the students of that year.
TRANSITION BUDDIES
Buddies are assigned to new students to welcome and support them with their transition into our school. Buddies are all volunteers and we partner together students from the same year level. Our buddies help new students settle into the School environment quickly by assisting with any questions that new students may have. But more importantly, they are a friend to the new student.
CAPTAINS
Each sport elects a Captain. The Captains assist the Head of Sport in the overall management of her sport. She motivates, encourages and sets the example of good sportsmanship to all the students that she leads. The Music and Drama Captains act as role models and mentors to all students involved in Performing Arts. They work closely with the Director of Music and Head of Performing Arts to promote student participation. In addition there are other Captain roles available in Debating and Public Speaking, Literacy, Duke of Edinburgh, Joan Ansett Hall and various other clubs.
HOUSE CAPTAINS AND DEPUTY CAPTAINS
There are six Houses and each of the House members elects their Captain and two Deputy Captains. Students are responsible for the majority of the coordination and preparation of House events.
PREFECTS
The Prefect body is composed of the Head Girl, Deputy Head Girl and Prefect positions. The Prefect body meet regularly with the Head of Student Experiences and Leadership and the Deputy Head of Senior School - Personal Growth. As the voice of the student body, they organise a range of social and fundraising events for the School Community.

Thrive

Our Thrive pillar embodies our educational philosophy by leveraging the world around us to shape our programs. This approach ensures our students become confident, globally-minded, and resilient decisionmakers, capable of adapting and thriving in complex, ever-changing environments.
To support students in developing their character and confidence, Toorak promotes and actively seeks opportunities for students to explore first hand a variety of career opportunities. The School places a strong emphasis on empowering our students to be in control and lead their futures both personally and professionally.
The various partnerships we have across STEM, Finance, Construction and Health allow students to hear first hand from an expert in the field about their journey and the reality of working in these industries. For our staff, exposure to the latest information and knowledge in this space is vital for us to continue to design and facilitate programs that ensure our students are ready for work in the future.
To thrive means different things to different people, but put simply at Toorak it is the fire in the belly that drives you towards what you want to pursue. We see it when students advocate for new clubs in the School, sign up for scholarships at university or attend events that they now run long after graduation. At Toorak we know that it is during these formative years at school that young people build their sense of self. We then love seeing them fly.

Connections
Our House system is a window into the spirit of Toorak, showcasing the connection and unity that make our school so special. The Houses hold significant places in Toorak College’s history, which spans over 150 years. This rich tradition of connection extends beyond our campus, as Toorak College graduates step into the world with lifelong connections and a devoted love of their house.
School Houses contribute to an increased feeling of identity and belonging and provide an abundance of activities to be involved in as well as leadership opportunities. House events are a revered part of school life and provide lasting memories. The ‘spirit’ of Toorak shines through, especially at House events where students show their loyalty to their House by dressing up in a range of costumes and competing.
The friendships made on these days strengthen the bonds between girls at all year levels and these connections continue to grow long after they have graduated.

Pathways
Toorak College graduates have the world at their feet, equipped with a strong academic foundation, diverse skills, and a global perspective. Our rigorous curriculum and supportive learning environment prepare students to excel in their chosen fields and pursue opportunities across the globe.
Toorak College students are accepted into prestigious universities within Australia, including the University of Melbourne, Monash University, the University of Sydney, and the Australian National University. Graduates are increasingly also choosing “younger”, forward-thinking universities such as RMIT, Deakin University and Swinburne University. Our students predominantly study Science and Biomedicine, a variety of Health fields, Business and Commerce, and Design.

Toorak College holds a prestigious partnership with The University of Melbourne. Every year, Year 10 students apply and The University of Melbourne chooses the most outstanding student based upon not only the student’s academic results but their participation within the School’s co-curricular activities and their involvement in leadership roles at school and in the community. The University organises a range of activities tailored to a student enrolled in Year 11 to inspire them about their future study. This partnership also offers the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program for Toorak College girls.

Industry Partnerships
Toorak College’s Pathways & Partnerships Program provides students with career insights and experiences through mentoring, networking, work experience, cadetships, and industry immersion excursions.
Partnerships with STEM-focused companies such as The Downer Group, CellCare, NAB and Seymour Whyte offer unique opportunities for students to gain real world experience and develop skills across Science, Technology, Design, Marketing, Engineering, Finance and Mathematics. The program has also secured cadetships for graduates studying a complementary university degree.
By working closely with our industry partners, we are able to bring meaningful challenges into the classroom and give young women opportunities in industry learning.

The Benefits of Boarding
Toorak College offers a range of boarding options such as full-time, weekly, and casual arrangements, accommodating students who are looking to practice their independence and social connections. Our flexible boarding solutions enable both local and international students to study at Toorak College. We provide the opportunity to:
DEVELOP LIFE SKILLS AND INDEPENDENCE
Boarding school teaches students a great lesson in what it means to be independent and responsible for themselves. Whilst the School offers meals, accommodation, supervision and support, students learn valuable skills including time management, organisation, and important life skills which they can develop from as young as Year 7. This might include keeping their accommodation clean, cooking for themselves in the common room and even looking after their own washing!
IMPROVE SOCIAL SKILLS
As a child first begins to develop their social skills their parents and siblings are able to provide them with all they require. However, as children grow and become more socially adept, their most important interactions will involve their peer group. By enrolling your child into weekly or short stay boarding, they will improve their negotiation skills, sharing, social cues and empathy skills and also experience the feeling of what it is to be truly seen and valued by your peers. An invaluable lesson for your children in developing self-confidence.
BROADEN PERSONAL VIEWS
Our Boarding House is an international mix. Students who attend Toorak College will become more aware of diversity in all its forms including, but not limited to, cultural, religious, physical abilities and age. Studies have shown that children who are exposed to an array of opinions and beliefs acquire stronger social skills and improved confidence and greater acceptance of others. They learn how to approach situations and people with an open mind which helps them grow as individuals.
FLEXIBILITY FOR WORKING FAMILIES
With fresh meals prepared daily, organised transport to co-curricular activities, allocated study times and access to school facilities after hours, it is easy to understand how boarding schools appeal to parents. If your child is boarding on a weekly or short stay basis, the School provides transport to and from Toorak activities allowing children and parents to focus on the meaningful parts of these experiences. It also provides an opportunity for the family unit to invest quality time with one another when it counts.
Toorak College has been a wonderful school for our daughters. It is a positive learning experience and a safe pathway for my children to meet new friends and integrate into Australian culture.”
