Meet Meche

THE JOURNEY, THE DOUBT, THE PERSEVERANCE Meche Van Der Vent-Stewart is a 29-year-old LLB graduate who has recently launched her own IP Consultancy, Venture 54. She explains that every entrepreneur has their own personal definition of what it means to be an entrepreneur based on what they have experienced – “It’s a journey, a constant flurry of highs and lows – sleepless nights and doubtful thoughts; enthusiasm and happiness,” says Meche. A short journey of entrepreneurship and my way forward

My journey started at an unexpected time of my life, only because I thought I was too young. A lie I soon came to realise after reading about young kids making money online through Youtube. In 2017 I started my first business called Philda, a women’s clothing brand. I made beautiful pastel-coloured Aline skirts for women and enjoyed the production process thereof – buying material, having the skirts sewn and then selling them to friends and family.

"I had to learn to separate my business from who I am as a person" Philda is named after my grandma, who was our family’s personal dressmaker. Philda taught me a lot. It taught me to provide my customers with the best shopping experience and to listen to my customers when they had a critique about my clothing. Initially, receiving criticism was not a great feeling because one immediately assumes that you, as an individual, are not doing well – I had to learn to separate my business from who I am as a person.

PAGE 05 IAMPASSION | 2021

I come from a family where entrepreneurship is deeply rooted in our DNA and I am grateful for the encouragement I received from my parents, especially from my late dad. He was a full-on entrepreneur, stuck in a day-to-day job yet close to the end of his life, he revived that entrepreneurship gene and excelled at it! Now, four years later, I found myself starting

Often times, we assume that we start off with credentials but a great coach and business mentor told me, “You don’t start with credentials, you build yourself to achieve certain credentials.” The ‘right time’ is the time you decide to start. What we do after that, is only up to us. It’s up to me. My legal background allowed me the opportunity to start this business.

What’s ahead

The next year for Venture 54 is to grow line by line and precept upon precept. To provide online education and advise many business owners about brand protection and exclusivity. The entrepreneurial journey requires so much resilience and strength in moments of tiredness and weariness – to continue even when it seems impossible, to not be the person who gave up but instead, the one who persevered even when circumstances said to give up!

rich. The wealthy are more concerned about longterm building, while the rich are more concerned about instant gratification. Inherently, a wealthy person’s mindset is directed to building a system to leverage multiple streams of Income. It starts with your passion and what you like doing – once you have mastered your craft and know your market, the very next level is how you can help make the lives of communities and nations better, easier, and more efficient.

To measure your capacity of wealth is to test the capacity of your mind

Being wealthy is unlike being rich which is measured by things – wealth is measured by time. The essence of wealth is measured by the length of time you are

able to live and uphold your current lifestyle without earning a monthly or regular income. This understanding of not having a regular income but instead having a continual cash flow, and/or inflow of financial resources, is the difference between being wealthy and being rich. Commonly generated through assets, skills, or systems of work. We are in a time and space where the difference between being wealthy and rich is being totally misunderstood. Being rich shows what you have attained but does not necessarily mean you have a cash flow.

MENTAL HEALTH VERSUS MENTAL ILLNESS

By MEGAN-ANNE PRESS

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO Mental illness, according to research, refers to the conditions that affect a person’s thinking or behavior. Whereas mental health reflects our social well-being; how we think, feel, make decisions and problem solve.

What we think is determined by what we put into our minds – poor thinking is therefore largely a result of our environment. It is important that post-pandemic, we have a clear understanding that our thought lives have been disrupted – we are now forced to think differently and behave differently. For some, this may come easy but for others, adapting to change may be a reminder or trigger of past trauma which then affects their mental well-being. Mental illness and mental health often go unnoticed because many do not know the difference; when to seek professional help or simply redirect their thinking.

"What we think is determined by what we put into our minds – poor thinking is therefore largely a result of our environment" Complete the questionnaire below that’ll help you overcome and reconsider your mental health: Describe one thing that, if it happens, would make your life 100% better. Explain why. What are five things you do really well? What do you most admire about your personality? What do you value most about today? What are the top three things you are grateful for?

Thought Piece By Intishaam Cupido TO TECH OR NOT TO TECH, THAT IS THE QUESTION.

It gets increasingly hard every day to imagine a world without social media.

We all know the saying, “Love makes the world go ‘round" and since love is at the core of the relationship, ultimately – relationships make the world go ‘round. Today, social media plays a huge role in how we interact in relationships but before Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter – before we had the ability to peer into people’s lives and nit-pick every moment shared on the world wide web – how did we stay connected? How were relationships strengthened and fortified?

“Love makes the world go ‘round" and since love is at the core of the relationship, ultimately – relationships make the world go ‘round.

You don’t know? Well, same here.

It gets increasingly hard every day to imagine a world without social media. A world where people rely on coffee dates, regular meetups, and face-toface, eye-to-eye contact has become old school. While technology has been one of the greatest advantages society has ever come across, it easily doubles up as a disadvantage. Day by day people admit that technology and its counterparts have stripped them of quality family time, honest connections, and real living experiences; yet these same people continue to base everyday interactions on the opinions of people on the world wide web, people they hardly know.

So, the question arises, do we really want to build strong, meaningful relationships or do we just want another story to use as an inspirational caption on our ‘aesthetically pleasing' #instafeed?
