Welcome to our August Issue! Every year, in August, our country marks Women’s Month. We pay tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956. The National Women's Month theme for this year is “Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights for an Equal Future”.The concept of Generation Equality is a global campaign and links South Africa to global efforts to achieve gender equality by 2030. Despite our unchanging strength, we, women, continue to face prejudice based on our gender. The pandemic has exacerbated existing gender disparities in practically every aspect of life around the world. Yet, there is still hope. Each of us can do something to contribute towards "lifting off the burden from women’s shoulders". Here are a few measures to consider as identified by Shameela Yoosuf Ali in FemAsia Magazine: Place women as leaders and let them make decisions Alternative imagination of our economy A system that works for all Building supportive networks "We are at a pivotal moment in history. The unfolding world of post-pandemic- Is it a portal for the future for hope and equality or a door to the cave of despair and inequality?" In recognition of the strides being made, we put the spotlight on women in a few of our articles this month. We hope you are inspired and uplifted PHAKAMA!

03 Benefits of Dance Physical, mental, and health benefits of dance - for a stress-free active lifestyle

"Fitness plays an important part in our health as individuals"

"Forte Wolfe, a Cape Town-based dance studio, has recently released some benefits of Dance & Fitness to help our families, friends, colleagues and even strangers achieve their goals - mentally, physically, and in their health. Fitness plays an important part in our health as individuals. It's our responsibility to personally ensure that we look after our bodies so that we can enjoy the fruits thereof, well into our old age.

In this global pandemic, it's important to stay positive and fight off negative energies through different methods. Here are a few:"

"National Women's Day in South Africa draws attention to many of the important issues that women in Africa still face - such as domestic violence, discrimination and harassment in the workplace, equal pay, education for girls, and more"

11 06 Music is a form of expression of one’s true feelings. This expression could in turn bring relief, peace, and safety. Music distracts the mind, slows down our bodies’ rhythms, and boosts our mood. This then could alter our behavior. Like the upbeat music played at supermarkets and restaurants to cause you to shop or eat faster or the music played in zen gardens and beauty spars to make you feel more relaxed, music has the power to change an atmosphere as and the way we think and ultimately act.

A SOUND Mind In this time, where the mental health of many is being challenged, can music be instrumental in dealing with this problem? The answer is yes. Music therapy is defined as the use of music to address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of a group or individual (google definition).

We need to make a greater effort to keep our minds healthy in these trying times, and the right music with positive lyrics and a relaxing vibe could be just what you need to lift your mood on a bad day. This could ensure great mental health so that you can make it to the other side of this pandemic strong.

TOURIST IN MY OWN CITY Things to do in and around Cape Town

Since its Women’s month, this one is for the ladies – Day trips and safe secluded spots to visit As we all know, Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities and has one of the 8 wonders of the world - Table Mountain which is iconic and very well known internationally. Besides the iconic mountain, our beaches are also highly rated as some of the top beaches across the globe.

08 "As we all know, Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities and has one of the 8 wonders of the world" If you're more of a ‘romantic’, I suggest that you try a sunset cruise. Cape Town shows off a stunning sunset. When booking at the waterfront, ask for the “sunset champagne cruise” – it is only 90 minutes long so you will be back in time for a lovely dinner at one of the remarkable restaurants situated within the waterfront.

Fun fact: Our beloved Cape Town has been voted amongst the top 10 most beautiful cities in the world.

That is enough reason for you to get out, especially being in lockdown for so long – I would say you’re probably suffering from cabin fever by now.

A guided tour

Start off by taking a trip to Table Mountain for some mesmerizing views, overlooking the beautiful Atlantic Ocean (more commonly known as Camps Bay). If you decide to go down to Camps Bay for a lovely stroll, on the soft white sand, remember too that Camps Bay Drive is one of the most beautiful and unforgettable scenic drives within the city – a drive that stretches all around the ocean, leading to Chapmans Peak Drive.

The next stop is for the ‘adventure seekers' – if you like swimming in the ocean, close to the sea creatures then this is for you! A seal snorkeling experience – great for exploring the animals of the ocean. It is quite a lengthy excursion, 150 minutes long. After that, you'll be famished so it's best to grab some fish and chips from the locals in the surrounding area – one of the best meals guaranteed! That brings us to the end of our tour, Cape Town has so much to offer and I hope you’ll continue exploring our beautiful home!

Tik (Tok) A modern-day escape One year and five months into lockdown and what an experience it has been so far. This past year and five months changed the lives of millions of South Africans, mostly for the worst but we do not negate the positives that came out of this lockdown. Lockdown became a time of isolation and loneliness yet a time of creativity and ‘finding ourselves as individuals. We found that we had so much time on our hands because we didn’t need to commute to school or work, meet up with friends or family, or any other social activities; instead, everything happened virtually. People (especially young people) became bored and, amongst many things they used to keep busy, they resorted to the famous App called Tik Tok.

Tik Tok became the escape for many and it became one of the new connecting points for people globally. The first challenge I can remember that made many South Africans aware of Tik Tok was the #dontrushchallenge. Suddenly, people channeled their frustrations (of being stuck at home) into fun! Tik Tok is not just a social media app, it also allows for freedom of expression. It became so popular among young people, eventually, adults started to hop on trends and challenges with their kids too! This became a great opportunity for family bonding and spending quality time with one another. It may have even helped some parents understand their children better.

11 I personally did many Tik Tok challenges with my late dad and it became popular in our family, to the point where aunts and uncles would ask my dad if he has any new Tik Tok videos. This app allowed us, as a family, to create beautiful memories that I'll forever cherish – we now have access to those videos and can always be reminded of his fun, loving nature. Tik Tok has fuelled a generation that is innovative and on-trend. In my opinion, this app has influenced young people to daringly try new things – it has challenged them to take creativity to the next level and to simply just express themselves. Many young people struggle with their mental health and self-esteem, and Tik Tok has played an important role in encouraging young people to stay positive, especially during these difficult times. Just the fact that you can have a laugh, stay positive, and be encouraged by videos is something to be grateful for. I myself enjoy Tik Tok so much and I would encourage others to join the Tik Tok gang for fun as long as it doesn’t distract them from important responsibilities.

As it is Women’s month, I wanted to add a few ladies, content creators, influencers' opinions as to why they enjoy TikTok and what makes it so fun. I reached out to Kayla also known as Kaylakimkay, AKA ‘Hunay’, in which she now has her own clothing brand as well as her own hair product called ‘Afrocurl’. She mentioned, “I can’t speak on behalf of everyone however I love the freedom of being creative on the app and that is a platform to learn as well as educate others.

KAYLA KIM TikTok Content Creator

I love that it is a community of people around the world learning about multiple cultures in a fun way. It is also an app that is very relatable where the algorithm is aligned to your specific interest. When in doubt turn to TikTok for a good laugh.” Kayla also mentioned that “TikTok can pave the way for many young kids especially with the guidelines put into place, this is an app that also motivates us to be bold and fearless and at times all that starts with is a trending dance to help build your confidence.” She says she personally loves the inspirational raw and relatable content because as much as we love sharing positives it’s important to share the journey for viewers to understand the process. To add a little spice to this article, I would love if our women could join in on a TikTok challenge. There will be a link attached below where you could follow IAP TikTok account and join in on the hashtag #womensdaychallenge, #iap_yc. A tip when creating your TikTok: Go crazy and have fun while making it.
