The last months have seen great changes for the country. Very few remember a time before Queen Elizabeth II and many shed tears at the news of her passing. I found it a very strange time, to be simultaneously mourning the loss of a woman who dedicated her whole long life to her realms and Commonwealth, while at the same time witnessing the pageantry of the accession of the new King.

I attended the reading at the Castle of the Accession Proclamation by the Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Sue Bell.

This may seem to us today to be superfluous, many of us will have watched the Proclamation being read at St James’ Palace, or the London Exchange on live television, or caught up on the News or streaming services, but in times before instant communication, this reading was essential. Any news would have taken days to filter across the country, so the reading of the Proclamation at town and city halls would have been how our forebears first learned of the passing of the monarch, and the accession of the heir.

There is another important function behind the Accession Council’s Proclamation, which is the confirmation of exactly who the new monarch is. This was last of particular importance after the Abdication of Edward VIII in 1936, lending legal and ceremonial weight to the transfer of the Crown to George VI. It was even more essential in times when the identity of the “true” heir was in question, such as when the Crown was passed to Queen Anne’s Hanoverian cousins rather than to her Jacobite halfbrother, or when Elizabeth I died, and the Council decided to offer the Crown to James VI of Scotland, bypassing the will of Henry VIII which would have seen Edward Seymour, Lord Beauchamp or, as his legitimacy was questioned, Margaret Clifford and her descendants accede.

With the accession of Charles III, Tonbridge and Malling takes its place in

history. Barely 24 hours before the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, our MP was appointed to attend cabinet after Her Majesty’s appointment of the new Prime Minister in what was to be her last official engagement, and Tom Tugendhat therefore joined the Privy Council and was a part of the Accession Council.

You may have guessed by now that I am a lover of History and the ways in which traditions are passed through the generations, but we have some wonderful, newer traditions in our town to celebrate. The annual Dragon Boat races have become a staple of the early Autumn calendar, and alongside the Food and Drink Festival brought thousands to the Castle and the banks of the Medway on a beautifully sunny day.

We can now look forward to our autumn and winter traditions including Fireworks displays, the Christmas Festival, pantomimes carol services. Please show your support of our local charitable organisations and retailers as you enjoy the festivities.

Tonbridge Town Team wishes you a Happy Christmas and New Year!

Tonbridge Town Team

What is the Tonbridge Town Team?

The Tonbridge Town Team was established as a result of the Portas Review published in 2011. The main aim is help make Tonbridge a vibrant and exciting place to live, work, visit and do business. The team achieve this by linking together businesses, local government, charities, clubs and the population as a whole.

There are lots of organisations, businesses and individuals who are doing fantastic things in Tonbridge and so the team set out to work with them and celebrate their achievements. They can make even more of an impact on the town by encouraging innovation and entrepreneurialism, and by building on the community spirit that exists in Tonbridge and the surrounding area.

The town team’s vision is an inclusive one that values all members of the community and seeks to build bridges and enable all to prosper in the surrounding area.

By working together and concentrating on what we can do rather than what we can’t, by being open to new ideas and matching enthusiasm with patient resolve we can continue to make our community not just a good place, but a great place to live.
