200 175 169 158 154 96 The College of Business and Accountancy belle, Uriel Minaves, was crowned as the Miss UNO-R 2023 after successfully retaining her poise and wit during the Coronation Night at the University Gymnasium, Nov. 14.

In an exclusive interview, Minaves shared that she would use her competence in journalism to advocate for students to improve their reading comprehension.

“I would really use my advocacy in where I advocate for my major consumption because I, myself, am a journalist. And my advocacy focuses more on promoting [enhanced] reading comprehension and reading habits with my fellow UNO-Rians,” Miss UNO-R 2023, Uriel Minaves, said.

Minaves bagged the Best Speaker award during the minor awarding segment of the pageant period.

CAS Dean Annabee MagbanuaClaur, PhD, conveyed her appreciation to the student council, faculty, and students’ commitment that made their victory possible.

“What truly motivates the college to win this year’s title is the Artians’ unwavering belief in their ability to succeed, and I believe that the support of the faculty, officers, and college as a whole made this happen,” Claur said.

Moreover, Claur expressed her gratitude to the OAR Administrators for organizing this University Week, which showcased the competencies and aptitude of the students.

to understand that hard work and enjoyment are more valuable than winning in any competition,” Claur added.

On the other hand, CAS Governor Laika Mari Watanabe extended her gratitude to everyone responsible for the college’s accomplishment despite having little time for preparation and practice.

“We are thankful to our Almighty Father for guiding us during the University Week 2023. Additionally, I would also like to thank the college for its unwavering support and the students for putting in their best effort despite time constraints,” Watanabe said.

Consequently, Watanabe highlighted their commitment to hold the title as the University Week 2024 champion by continuously displaying Artians’ brilliance and competitiveness in performances.

Moreover, the College of Business and Accountancy clinched the first runner-up with 200 points, followed by the College of Allied Medical Health Sciences with 175 points.

“Before becoming Miss UNO-R 2023, to be honest, I don’t have expectations. I am just enjoying myself on the stage, but I guess, the stars really did align for me,” Minaves added.

The reintroduction and reviving of devotion to Nuestra Señora De La Salud inspired the festival dance competition theme.

“This year, we [the university] introduce a new identity to our celebration, the cultural and spiritual, through reviving our tradition of festivities and our devotion to Our Lady of Health, Nuestra Señora

de La Salud,” Vice-President for Identity, Formation, and Mission, and University Week 2023 Chairman, Rev. Fr. Leo Alaras, OAR, said.

Moreover, the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) nabbed the awards for Best in Costume, Best in Choreography, and Best in Arena Dance, while the College for Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) won the Most Disciplined award.

In addition, the CBA, College of Allied Medical Health Sciences, and CCJE earned first, second, and third runners-up, respectively.

Parading their smiles and team spirit, Luisa Medel National High School (LMNHS) once again secured their championship title besting six secondary schools across Negros Occidental for the Drum and Lyre competition at the University Ampitheatre, Nov. 13.

(TNHS) was given the Best Mother Majorette Award.

“We are super happy because all our efforts in preparing for the competition paid off. I was worried at first because most of our members are new and we were pressured because [Luisa] Medel [National High School] has always been the champion for drum and lyre,” LMNHS Mother Majorette Ashley Homena said.

Drum and Lyre Competition Chairman Fritz Palma said that this is the first time that the University Week celebration was in time for the Feast of Nuestra Señora de la Salud.

The Best Trainer during the competition was also awarded to LMNHS Band Master Agosto Ferrer.

“Fr. [Leo] Alaras and I were talking and we [were] hoping that next year, we will not only have seven contenders but ten,” Drum and Lyre Competition Chairman Fritz Palma said in his closing remarks.

Representatives from the University offices, councils, and college departments kicked off the University Week celebration with the caravan of vehicles as they marched on the streets of Bacolod City, Nov. 13.

“The UNORian experience is not just limited to the UNORians but also include everyone who wants to feel and experience it on hand and in person,” University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Supreme Student Government President Dustin Ryan Veridiano said.

Veridiano further expounded that with this being an open house event, it further exemplifies to everyone this year’s theme of “Embracing Depth and Excellence,” as it encapsulates

“We want to show to the public that we, as a university, are united.

We also want to show to them that we celebrate that fact not just inside the campus, but outside as well,” Veridiano added.

The event started off with a drumbeater demonstration as the caravan rolled out of the campus with a security entourage of Philippine National Police traffic enforcers.

The convoy made its way towards La Salle Avenue, with the colleges’ Miss UNOR representatives at the forefront of each transport, circling back through Lacson St., and finishing its voyage back where it started, which was at the UNO-R campus.

Thrilling UNO-Race flags off in U-Week ‘23

Armored with excellence in mental wits and skill, representatives from various college departments of the University of Negros Occidental Recoletos participated in the UNORace during the second day of the University Week, held at different places around Bacolod City, Nov. 14.

“The UNO-Race is one of the activities this University Week [that will] showcase the physical and mental skills of the students as well as their teamwork as they complete the given challenges,” UNORSSGO Undersecretary Interior Jose Mari Dalisay said.

The race had seven stations, wherein each station had different challenges including solving math problems, reenacting of movie

scenes, and doing TikTok with strangers which the players needed to complete before proceeding to the next level of the game.

“The experience [was] so fun, full of thrill, and at the same time we’ve learned something along the way,” UNO-Race participant Herold Renz Dorado said.

“As UNO-Rians, we can be the light to other people in various ways by showing them forgiveness, acceptance, compassion, and encouragement,” Rev. Fr. Leo Alaras, OAR, said during the blessing of candles.

Fr. Alaras also emphasized that UNO-Rians should also accept each other regardless of the age and status differences.

On the other hand, the University of Negros Occidental - Recoletos Supreme Student Government

Officer’s (UNORSSGO) Secretary of the Department of Religious Affairs Dicken May Guarra stated that “Taize” was a form of expressing appreciation to God for celebrating University Week 2023.

“As this is the first day of University Week, “Taize” allows us to place God at the center of everything by showing gratitude for the talents and skills that He had bestowed upon us,” Guarra expressed.

Moreover, Guarra highlighted that for events and activities to be successful, prayers and acknowledging God’s presence and blessings were essential.

Furthermore, the said event was led by UNORSSGO’s Department of Religious Affairs, in partnership with Campus Ministry Office, and religious organizations.

The game Dakpanay Baboy was delayed for an hour, letting the pig rest after an exhausting travel.

In a strategic partnership with the Amity Volunteer Fire Brigade (AVFB), the Amity Youth Volunteer Recoletos (AYVR) conducted and executed training sessions on rappelling and safety techniques, to enhance emergency response skills and safety awareness at the LC Building, Nov. 15.

“This skill is indispensable for first responders and firefighters, providing a self-reliant capability in scenarios where exits are difficult, and natural structures are inaccessible,” Gorne said.

Operating under the Amity Youth Volunteer Organization and supervised by the Amity Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Amity Youth Volunteer Recoletos actively engages in volunteering for both medical work and fire safety initiatives.

“This proves valuable in disaster scenarios by facilitating access to otherwise unreachable areas and play a crucial role in the domain of emergency response,” Amity Youth Volunteer President Khristian Garbanzos said.

In addition, AVFB Rescue Deputy, Migue Mike Gorne, explained that rappelling is a disciplined descent method utilizing a rope for a secure and controlled progression.

Meanwhile, the participants are mostly new to the activity, while a subgroup brings prior experience; however, rigorous safety measures are in place, ensuring a secure environment and alleviating concerns.

“This activity employs stringent safety measures, including personal protective equipment such as helmets and gloves,” Gorne elaborated.

After emphasizing the significance of rappelling, Gorne encouraged individuals to undergo training and provided practical tips on how to effectively execute this skill.

Furthermore, students from various departments actively participated in the hands-on application of rappelling techniques under the guidance of professionals from the AVFB.

Mark Gimel Paglinawan and Canel De La Cruz from the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) exhibited biblical prowess and knowledge, placing first in the Recoleto Quiz Bowl held at the University Auditorium, Nov. 15.

“It [Rekoleto Quiz Bowl] inspired me to continue studying about the sacred scriptures that govern my faith, with the hope that I can better myself by learning from the lessons they offer and the warnings found within the scriptures,” De La Cruz said.

The seven colleges of the university along with the Senior High School department vied in a three-round quiz bee, testing their wits and knowledge on biblical characters, places, and events.

According to ReEd Program Head Genie Pedrosa, MaEd, the contest with the theme “Exploring the Sacred Scriptures,” was organized to allow the students to have a venue for spiritual formation.

The official recognition and awarding of certificates was held last November 18.

‘Undecided Band’ wins Battle of the Bands

Perfect pitches and harmonious melodies resonated through music grounds, as the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) amassed champions and displayed their subtle impact on music during the battle of the bands held at the University Amphitheater, Nov. 16.

The representatives from the CAS department named their band as the “Undecided Band.”

“This event [served] as a way to showcase our talents in music and to create a field of camaraderie as we engage with other students to form a group and perform on stage,” Undecided Band Vocalist Angel Khate Linda said.

The atmosphere was filled with kaleidoscope genres of music where approximately 1,500 attendees were unified by their passion for music.

“This

platform became a medium to showcase the talent of UNOrians and to improve their confidence as well as to help them strive to get better in this field,” University of Negros Occidental - Recoletos Supreme Student Government Secretary of Advocacies Bea Lovino said.

UNORSSGO embarks on Medical Drive

Organized to maintain, restore, and promote health, the University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos Supreme Student Government (UNORSSGO) in collaboration with the different health organizations and institutions spearheaded a medical mission at the Saint Augustine Building, Nov. 17.

“This endeavor aims to promote health wellness to community, and as a pharmacy student the pursuit of this project also cultivate our skills in the medical field,” UNORSSGO Secretary for Interior Eazel Dawn Amit said.

Furthermore, the Philippine Dental Association – Bacolod Chapter, HealBerg Lifestyle Medical Center and Clinics Inc., Adventist Medical Center – Bacolod, Bacolod Adventist Light Bearers, and Negros Occidental Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist Church were the partners for the medical mission.

The UNO-RHYTHM and the UnoRian DJ, Jericho Conlu, captivated and entertained the audience with a series of performances.

“University Night is exclusively dedicated to UNO-Rians, offering a collective opportunity to relish, have fun, and celebrate the festivities of University Week 2023,” UNORSSGO President Dustin Veridiano said.

Moreover, a diverse array of students from different organizations and various college departments enthusiastically participated in the event, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the party.

The evening’s itinerary included bands of lively music, followed by the energetic foam party and the immersive powder party experience.

“I’m attending this event to alleviate the stress caused by midterms and the preparations for University Week,“ Second-year Civil Engineering student Ruby Anne Novela shared.

“Our objective is to highlight the UNO-Rian community, and that’s precisely why we’ve orchestrated the University Night—to emphasize and celebrate the vitality of our community,” Veridiano shared.

CAS grabbed the Championship title from last year holder, CEN, in the Hiphop category as they cracked the custom hip hop grooves through romance and unique imagery with Arthur Miguel’s “Lihim”.

During the Group Music Television Competition, the CAS deparment once again secured the championship as they displayed a remarkable impersonation of Beyonce’s “Run the World”.

Thirteen models donned looks from aspiring UNO-Rian designers who merged artistry and upcycled materials into a course-related sustainable couture during the AmbassaCourse 2023 held at the University Lobby, Nov. 17.

“The goal of the AmbassaCourse is to showcase each college, emphasizing their engagement with their student organization using sustainable fashion,” AmbassaCourse 2023 Project Leader Kenneth Marfil said.

AmbassaCourse harnessed the legacy of unconventional eleganza, aligning with this year’s theme, “Avant

Garde: Unearthing the Spectrum of Academic Elegance.”

“It felt good that I was able to represent our college [CCJE] and showcase my artistic expression while making our design using recycled materials,” second-year Criminology student Jennyfer Briones said.

Wearing inclusivity as a banner, the Special Education Students Association (SPEDSA) spearheaded an event with a theme “A Day with Special Ones” that aimed to make children with special needs feel a sense of belongingness at the President’s Hall, Nov. 17.

“This event is a medium to show the students their value and importance, it is also an approach to show that they should not be seen and limited by their disability, but are equal in opportunity in every aspect especially in education,” SPEDSA President Jessie Jane Lumawag said.

The event aimed to instill that this advocacy where students with special needs in the educational domain is being treated with equity

and equality which is vital to continually promote diversity and significance of a supportive environment.

“This helps a lot especially for parents like me where our children aren’t exposed to outside world, this activity enable them to enjoy and let them feel the sense of belongingness. This approach also enhances our child’s physical, mental, and emotional quality,” one of the parents Milrey Rose Son Moyong said.

UNORSSGO Project Head Jessea Kyle Marie Perido conveyed her appreciation as the pioneer organizer of the event and her gratitude for being a conduit for students to enjoy University Week with their furry friends.

“This event offers students the opportunity to have an enjoyable, thrilling, and unforgettable event while simultaneously helping animal shelters through their registration,” Perido said.

On the other hand, secondyear Medical Technology student

and pet owner Ica Gugudan expressed her gratitude for the UNORSSGO in including the Pet Pawrade event to the University Week 2023 celebration.

“As a fur mom, I find this UNORSSGO event to be heartwarming since it fosters an advocacy as well as a cause of raising money for local animal shelters while allowing the UNORians to spend time with their furry friends on campus this University Week,” Gugudan said.

The said event was in partnership with various organizations including the BACH Project PH, inSpyRed, Falcor Marketing Corporation, Xander’s Petshop, Just Four Paws Pet Care, and Supplies Center, and Furmacy Bacolod.

08 University News Armored with finesse and talents, representatives from the seven colleges convened in a culminating activity of UNO-R Supreme Student Government (UNORSSGO) entitled “Sigabong 2023,” held at the University Main Lobby, Nov. 18.

UNORSSGO President Dustin Ryan Veridiano acknowledged the governors’ and their representatives’ efforts to foster relationships in his opening remarks during University Week 2023. “[Sigabong 2023] serves as a reminder that even in the face of academic challenges, we can still have fun, gather together, and celebrate friendship and relationships with one another,” Veridiano said.

Moreover, Veridiano voiced his gratitude to all of the councils that

have allocated resources, worked diligently, and made the University Week 2023 a success for all.

On the other hand, UNO-R League of Governors President Rialin Yasay underlined how important sportsmanship is in every competition.

UNO-R Employees joins Sayawit Contest

University of Negros OccidentalRecoletos employees took the stage, turning the Sayawit Cultural Contest into a mesmerizing display of talent and rhythm at the University Gymnasium, Nov 18.

“The purpose of Sayawit is to give a chance to the faculty and staff to showcase their talents in a way of cultural presentation,” Human Resource Management Development Office staff Fritz Palma said.

“Given the fact that we are just 50, we still got it. We became the champions and it could be attributed to the sacrifices, dedication, and the spirit of recollects in Senior High Department,” SHS Principal, Sir Harry S. Magluyan said.

Seven colleges of the University unveiled their state-of-the-art exhibit, welcoming aboard its audiences with varieties of art and specializations held at the La Consolacion Building, Nov. 14.

with its own Emergency-Installed mini room, Patient Boothika, and the College of Engineering (CEN) presented the process behind the process of making sugar, alcohol, and softdrinks.

“Each college really showcased intelligence in their particular field [through their exhibits], by letting us immerse on things they themselves experience,” Second-year Medical Technology student Althea Nichole Mangana said.

The College of Information Technology proudly presented self made applications such as “HELPING HANDS” that aid individuals in need despite distances.

The College of Criminal Justice Education’s crime scene analysis exhibit encouraged students to use their uncanny minds to solve cases, meanwhile, the College of Business and Accountancy launched a young entrepreneurs exhibit.

The College of Education focused on presenting the realm of linguistic exploration, while the College of Arts and Sciences imparted knowledge featuring Radyo Rekoleto with a knowledge incubation hub.

UNO-R Staff clinches victory in B-ball

University of Negros OccidentalRecoletos (UNO-R) Faculty and Staff asserted their dominance in an intense four-quarters basketball championship, 85-69, over the Ceres Corporation Team, held at the University Gymnasium, Nov. 18.

“The game aims to foster fraternal bonds between the Ceres Corporation Team and UNO-R Faculty and Staff,” Basketball Sports Moderator Elma Lina Tejida said.

The first quarter concluded with the UNO-R Team leading 28-21, a result achieved through a series of effective defensive strategies.

“Our strong teamwork is evident as we execute numerous passes, make successful assists, and secure sure shots,” UNO-R Faculty and Staff Team Player Rey Mark Maalihan shared.

During the second quarter, the UNO-R Team dominated with a

score of 49-24, capitalizing on a succession of successful shots and assists.

“Our winning strategy revolves around playing the game with enthusiasm, and putting in our best effort,” Maalihan added.

Moreover, the third quarter concluded with a score of 65-48, marking the result of a series of successful offensive and defensive plays.

“We enjoyed the competition, improved our skills through dedicated practice, and addressed occasional miscommunications through open dialogue and additional training,” UNO-R Team Player Ernesto Peraren Jr., shared.

Furthermore, Ernesto Peraren Jr. of the UNO-R Team earned the title of Most Valuable Player.

Inaugural Academic Olympics draws cerebral minds

Academic enthusiasts from various departments gathered for the ‘Virtutis: First Academic Olympics’ organized by the University of Negros Occidental - Recoletos Supreme Student Government (UNORSSGO) at the Little Theatre, Academic Cultural Center, and Fr. Cuenca Hall, Nov. 16.

“This event is designed to encourage participants to apply their technical and academic skills through a competitive and interactive framework because we are committed to fostering interactive and excellence-driven activities,” UNORSSGO Secretary for Student Development and Academics Jonathan Aguilar said.

In line with this, the event encompasses a series of intellectual challenges, including the Grammar Checker Challenge, Topic Presentation, Pagsulat ng Dagli, and the University Debate.

“We have initiated the Academic Olympics, not only as a part of U-Week but as a platform to provide students with an opportunity to enhance their learning experience,” Aguilar said.

The Grammar Checker Challenge is an activity where participants showcase their proficiency by identifying and correcting grammatical errors in written content, while, Dagli, the Filipino equivalent of

flash fiction, is a concise short story and a hastily composed narrative.

“The competition was undeniably nerve-wracking, given the tight one-hour time constraint for completing our piece,” College of Arts and Sciences Pagsulat ng Dagli Representative, Theresa Mae Dulman shared.

Meanwhile, topic presentation demanded the systematic and structured communication of information or insights on a specific subject, employing verbal delivery with visual aids to convey key points and engage an audience.

to join, our performance turned out quite well, and the experience taught me valuable lessons about teamwork,” College of Allied Medical Health Sciences Topic Presentation Representative Carmela Marie Alinsunurin said.

Notably, the University Debate is a formal and structured competition where two teams engage in an argumentative discussion on a given topic.

Furthermore, College of Arts and Sciences emerged as overall champions in the University Debate while the rest of the results was announced at the Closing Ceremony, November 18.

Studs exemplify artistry in Mono-No-Aware Representatives from seven colleges showcased their creative aptitude during the “Mono-No-Aware: A Pop and Anime Convention,” facilitated by the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Supreme Student Government (UNORSSGO) held at the University Main Lobby and University Park, Nov. 15.

UNORSSGO Senator and Project Head Rayne Christian Contrevida stated that being one of the pioneers of the event helped him a lot to improve and expand the said event than the previous year. “[Even though] last year was an

experimental stage, it provided me with a good learning experience and assisted me in making adjustments, particularly to the location, [since the event] last year was held in a closed venue which was in the Auditorium,” Contrevida said.

Additionally, the project head stated that the UNORSSGO offered and drew a variety of activities that were tailored to the interests and zeal of the students during the University Week 2023.

“There is a lot of K-Pop, J-Pop, and Anime community here in the University, in which students should

celebrate these aspects of themselves by dancing, singing, and cheering with their colleges,” Contrevida expressed.

Moreover, Contrevida highlighted that even with the challenges they faced, organizing the said event gave them the opportunity to grow and learn from their mistakes.

“UNORSSGO offers a ton of exciting events that are more improved and polished,” Contrevida said.

On the other hand, the College of Allied Medical Health Sciences K-Pop Dance Competition participant The Amity Youth Volunteer (AYV) University of St. La Salle Chapter bested three other participating schools during the Respolympics 2023 held at the University Grandstand, Nov. 18.

“I am happy that I was able to participate and help other people but of all the emotions that I felt, nervousness tops them all because I am new to this organization,” University of St. La Salle second-year Special Needs Education student Ma. Eltheah Jephah Elijan shared.

Religious Activities Committee holds free baptism

The Sacrament of Baptism was given to the 29 children during a mass baptism organized by the University Week Religious Activities Committee at the Oratory of St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Nov. 16.

“I took the opportunity to have my child baptized because, first of all, this program is in favor for us, especially that it is free. It is important to have my child baptized for her to be absolved of her sins,” resident of Brgy. Tangub and participant April Rose Emolaga shared.

Campus Ministry and Religious Education Department Director Rev. Fr. Corvin Maturan, OAR, expressed the importance of organizing a free baptism.

“It is good that the university is

having this free baptism because this is to give our indigents the opportunity to have their children baptized,” Fr. Maturan said.

As a part of their spiritual preparation, Religious Education Instructor Gerald Jovan Dapat gave the parents and godparents a Pre-Jordan Seminar prior to the celebration of the Sacrament.

I believe that this U-Week 2023 is a joyful celebration wherein everyone gets to have the fun and experiences that this institution has to offer. I believe that UNO-R is a foundation of experiences that build one’s progress toward excellence. I believe this school is something that one should choose.

for us, freshmen, since this is our initiation,” first-year student and participant Renzy Jainar said.

Moreover, ETC Adviser Nikko Paolo Calumpiano, LPT, MAEL, in his opening remarks, highlighted the importance of the event in allowing the students to embody what it is to characterize a God and in boosting their confidence.

“This is about closing your fourth wall, not breaking your fourth wall.

This means that whatever happens, whatever you may see or hear from your audience, you will not be affected because you are right now a performer, “ Calumpiano said.

Furthermore, the participants portrayed the different Gods and Goddesses from the Philippine, Egyptian, Greek, Chinese, and Norse Mythologies.
