Toko CACTUS 2024

Toko CACTUS (Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit Support) has started off strong! We are now halfway through the programme and Kelvin McSkimming, our Trainer, has had the 18 students focusing on teamwork, self-control, new connections and trust within the group. He has also been working on mental strength and agility with the team.

At the end of week one, Keely Hill from Sport Otago and also plays for Otago Spirit came to speak to the group about the importance of balancing our well-being, drawing on the Te Whare Tapa Whā model, which encompasses mental, spiritual, physical, social and land connections. She also emphasized the significance of fuelling our bodies with nutritious food to maintain energy throughout

In the second week we had Amanda Slade join us. She is the Personal Development Manager for the Otago Rugby Football Union and asked the students to think about what defines them as a person; such as identifying things that filled their cup and what things that didn’t. If we fill our cup with things that make us feel good, it will make us feel better, perform better and keep up with our commitments. Last Friday we had Chase Haley visit. Chase holds multiple boxing and kickboxing titles and shared his inspirational journey, which has now led to teaching at Ōtepoti Boxing Club. He talked about how life’s challenges reshaped his path and resulted in becoming a better person which motivated him to help everyone that came through his doors through fitness, building community and improving health and

Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...

SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.

As we reach the midway point of the final term, we are truly in the “business end” of the year. NCEA exams are in full swing, junior testing is underway, and our preparations for end-ofyear activities and celebrations are picking up pace. Meanwhile, we’re already looking to 2025, planning the new timetable, implementing exciting initiatives, and gearing up for a smooth transition to our BYOD program. There’s a lot happening, and we deeply appreciate the ongoing support of our kura and whānau as we work together to finish this year on a high note.

Sun Safe

Last week brought some pretty warm days, which served as a timely reminder of how strong the sun can be in Aotearoa. We have plenty of shady areas for students to enjoy during lunch and intervals, along with multiple water fountains around the school. To keep our students sun-safe and hydrated, we encourage everyone to bring a water bottle to school each day, wear a hat, and apply sunscreen. Let’s protect ourselves while making the most of these sunny days.

Well-being and Exam Support

With exams in progress, we remind our students to care for their hauora (well-being) with a few helpful tips:

• Stay Active: Regular movement boosts energy and helps relieve stress.

• Balanced Study: Short, focused study sessions with breaks work wonders!

• Sleep: Prioritise rest. A well-rested mind is an effective one.

This week, we were thrilled to see the temporary fencing go up around B Block as we begin the long-awaited upgrade of our science labs. These new facilities will include more functional learning spaces, with updated windows, plumbing, and heating.

The modernised labs will support hands-on, inquirybased learning and provide a stimulating environment for exploring the wonders of science.

We look forward to unveiling these exciting spaces in the new year and can’t wait to see the opportunities they will bring for our students in science!

BYOD for 2025

Looking ahead to 2025, our kura will be transitioning to a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) system. Year 7 and 8 students will continue to have access to Chromebooks during school hours, while older students are encouraged to bring their own devices to enhance their learning.

Details on recommended devices and the BYOD agreement form are available on our website and at the school office. Our preferred supplier, Noel Leeming, offers a selection of approved devices, and special deals will be available for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Cellphone Policy Reminder

A quick reminder that our cellphone-free policy, introduced in Term 2, remains in place. Students are to keep their phones away during the school day, including breaks. If caregivers need to reach students, please contact the school office. This policy also applies to senior students on campus for study or exams, helping everyone stay focused and connected in their learning.

Upcoming Events Calendar

End-of-Year Activities: Our end-of-year activities will take place on December 5th, 6th, and 9th. More details will be provided to students this week.

Annual Prizegiving: Our prizegiving ceremony will be held on Tuesday, December 10th, at 7 PM in the school hall. Students are expected to arrive by 6:30 PM, and we ask the audience to be seated by 6:45 PM. This is a highlight of our school calendar and a special time to celebrate student achievements. We look forward to seeing you there!

Squash Proving Popular

We would like to thank the Milton Squash Club for generously providing their venue for our use over the past two terms. Both 9/10 Junior and Senior PE classes have spent time learning the basics, and for most, playing for their first time. Squash fever is taking off!

We have a group of 10+ students wanting to play competitively for our kura. We have unearthed some raw talent that needs to be nurtured by a keen community squash player.

Genesis Visit for SPEC Class

Last Tuesday the SPEC class went to visit the Genesis office. We learnt a lot from Carolyn Shanks. Carolyn has been running Genesis for over four years. We asked her some great questions and we got amazing replies. Some of our questions were about how Genesis is designed and printed. We talked about where stories and information come form and she showed us how she sets it out on the computer, like a jigsaw puzzle!

The Genesis is printed with toner on A3 paper and we were surprised to learn how much is used! We watched one of the printers as it copied the Genesis and created a booklet. We also found out what days the Genesis office is open, which is Tuesday. We found out about business advertising in Genesis and how this helps Genesis to run. Carolyn said one downfall could be running low on ink and paper. We learned about how many people help to deliver the Genesis. We were able to look at old copies of the Genesis from 1996 and see how it has changed. We were amazed to see the old copies.

Students Enjoy 10-Pin Bowling

Last week, a group of our students (the Toko Tigers) went to Bowline in Kaikorai Valley for a 10-Pin bowling competition with about 70 students from other schools. They all had a blast, learning new skills and cheering each other on and consistently showing our school values. Chloe C was the overall winner in our group with her dynamic bowling skills.

School Partners with KidsCan

KidsCan has now partnered with Tokomairiro High School to assist in providing the essentials for Kiwi kids in need and give them the opportunity for a better future.

Kidscan believes that education is a child's ticket out of poverty, and gives them the opportunity for a better future. But kids can't learn when they are cold, wet and hungry.

They are helping to provide nutritious, hearty breakfast, snack and lunch food that is shelf stable and supplements to the services provided by the school.

They help children in need by providing new fleece-lined jackets and comfortable shoes, so they arrive at school warm and dry, no matter the weather. At the beginning of Term 1 students/whanau who may need support in this area can contact the school and receive assistance to access these amazing options.

This term we have already started to distribute food items to students who are hungry or need something to "top them up." This has been met with huge success, and has already had an impact on attendance and inclusion at school.

With your support, we can continue to provide the essentials for Kiwi kids in need and give them the opportunity for a better future.

The Rebus Club of Milton

We were fortunate to have Delia Stammers step in at short notice to talk about her career. She introduced herself with a mihi and mentioned how lucky she was to have been brought up in Milton, being able to maintain a strong relationship with many of her school friends.

On leaving school, she graduated as a Physiotherapist from the University of Otago, and worked in Taumarunui before travelling overseas. Back in NZ she returned to the area, working in Balclutha, while also studying Nutrition and Sports Physiotherapy. She was encouraged to join the NZ Army Reserve Forces and started basic training, graduating into the Infantry. This led to her being offered Officer training in the Regular Force. The training for this was at the Officer Cadet School in Waiouru, where she learned tactics, leadership, and how to assess situations and make decisions. After graduation, she remained in the Infantry, conducting the Platoon Command Course, and moving on to the role of Platoon Commander in Burnham. COVID-19 was a tough time for the military. However, during this time, she began her training to become a Captain.

In 2021 she had the opportunity to deploy to Lebanon to work as a Military Observer for the United Nations Treaty Supervision Organisation for a year. It was a new experience in such a different country and much was learned and experienced.

Back in NZ the challenge became planning training, exercises and supporting the welfare of her soldiers. She also finished her courses for promotion to Captain which was awarded to her while attending a training exercise in Australia.

Delia has learned the following things from being in the Army: leadership, ethos and values, and that everyone can add value and provide opportunities to learn, be they good or otherwise.

Delia was thanked by Lex Adam and presented with a gift. The November meeting is on Tuesday the 19th at the RSA hall at 10 am. The speaker is Helen Ryan who will tell us about her travels in South America. Committee please meet at 9.30 am.

Genesis Articles

We are very grateful for articles received about any news that is happening in the community. We try our best to publish articles on the week provided but due to space restraints we are not always able to. If your article is not printed in the week submitted, our goal is to publish it in the next Genesis issue.

Waihola/ Carendon Women’s Institute

Our October meeting was held in the Waihola Hall with a large attendance of visiting members of local Women`s Institutes as it was our annual Coffee morning. The speaker was Dr Charlotte King who talked about her work researching the Colonial Women of Early Otago and what can be found out about their lives, their health and what they eat. Samples of teeth, the hair and the bones of deceased people can help us to know about their lives. Sometimes their area of origin can be pinpointed, when the names of the buried are not known.

Dr King has been involved with the Back Road cemetery, (Milton) the Lawrence cemetery and the Drybread cemetery. This was an amazing talk that was illustrated with slides and photos. Members then held the usual meeting afterwards. We were reminded that November`s meeting will involve a bottle auction, and the entertainment is to bring along your wedding dress and talk about it. Plus the theme of the meeting is Mexico and to bring a mexican meal for our shared lunch. We will be meeting in the Waihola Bowling Clubrooms at 10.30 am All are welcome to attend.

Two $1000 Hato Hone St John scholarships for prospective new healthcare workers in Milton.

Hato Hone St John is offering two $1000 scholarships to Milton residents and students who are looking to take up a career in healthcare.

Funded by donations from the local community, the two scholarships offered by the Milton Area Committee are to help residents and students who wish to study a healthcare-related course or degree at a time when communities struggle with the cost of living, and the country suffers a growing shortage of doctors, and nurses across multiple disciplines.

Hato Hone St John Milton Area Committee Chairperson, Marie Smith says it is important that local fundraising is used to give back to our local residents and students.

“Otago University and Otago Polytech are a stone’s throw from Milton. A large portion of our local high school students typically study some form of health-related study there.

“After tremendous local fundraising, we wanted to give back to the local Milton-Bruce District, and to support the healthcare industry nationwide.”

Applications can be submitted from Monday 4th November until Sunday 1st December 2024, with successful recipients being notified by Friday 6th December. The minimum age for applicants is 16 years old.

Contact oli.blackbourn@stjohn.org.nz for an application form, or any questions.
