This is a chance to apply for an infrequent and exciting opportunity to work for a forward thinking Local Authority at City of York Council in their Street Lighting Department. This vacant Highway Electrician role does not come up often due to the size and nature of the team, and we have a current vacant position for the right person to work within our street lighting team.

We are looking for somebody who has preferably worked within the Highway Electrical industry but open to all suitably qualified electricians who either fancy a change of routine or are looking for a new or different challenge for their career path.

As a department we undertake a variety of tasks/projects including lighting maintenance on York’s bridges, housing developments and other street lighting projects and alterations to existing adopted highway schemes due to junction alterations, WIFI based colour changing floodlighting schemes on the city’s monuments, work on private network street lighting circuits/CCTV and Bus RTI digital signs and power supplies. All this and the maintenance/replacement of all existing 23,000 highway electrical assets under the street lighting department’s umbrella. New LED lighting technology lantern replacement schemes along with concrete column replacements are also being undertaken on capital programs.

The management of this team is only one aspect of my role within City of York Council but throughout the years this team has never ceased to amaze me, with their ingenuity and team spirit they work through any issues dynamically and thoroughly. It has been seen and commented on by other departments as to how dynamic, thorough and professional this small team has been since the service was brought under the authority’s responsibility in 2013.

We rely on the initiative of and the confidence in the team to work through issues with necessary support if required.

Development/implementation of a strategy to maximise income from grant making trusts/ foundations, research eligible trusts and foundations to apply for funding and respond to requests for funding from hospice departments.

The successful applicant will be qualified to City & guilds 236 pts 1 and 2 or equivalent electrical installation qualification.

Previous experience in the industry will come hand in hand with industry qualifications such as IPAF, G39 safe isolation of DNO supplies and NRWSA operative street works qualifications. However, we can support the right candidate through any necessary industry training. The working week is 37 hours and a 24-hour out-of-hours service is also in place for the department to respond to emergency calls from police, utilities or residents. This will entail the successful applicant being on the emergency standby rota 1 week in 4 with additional pay. A works van will be provided for this requirement.
