If you’re planning a destination wedding, there are a few things you’ll have to understand right away.

Number one: this is going to be the most epic life experience ever. Getting married is exciting enough, but travelling to a faraway venue with your closest friends and family takes things up a notch. You’ll have the memories of your wedding day, plus long-lasting images of an amazing trip with your people.

Number two: you have to accept that some things will be out of your control. If you’re a type-A personality, this can be a struggle, but a reality. Chances are you’re booking your venue sight unseen (cue the heart palpatations). Rely on advice from experts, online reviews and your gut instinct when it comes to selecting your wedding location. Aside from that, there’s not much you can do. Once you sign the contract, there’s no point in stressing over the venue. You can, however, work closely with the on-site coordinators or your own wedding planner to be sure you have the day of your dreams.

Number three: not everyone will be able to attend. Inviting people to a destination wedding is a big ask; it takes money, babysitters, vacation time and, well, I’m going to say money again. Don’t be o ended if some people decline the invite, and don’t push to change their minds. e reality is that they probably want to go, but just can’t swing it for any number of reasons.

Number four: in the end, whether it rains or the sun shines, you’re saying, “I do” to the love of your life. And that’s worth all the planning stress.

Let me o er my pre-congratulations. And let it be known that I am ohso-jealous of the adventure you’re about to have.

GETTING THERE

PLANNING YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING

If I told you that I found and booked the perfect destination wedding venue without ever setting foot outside of Canada, would you believe me? It sounds like a tall order, but it’s totally doable with the right preparation. After all, if I can do it, you can too. Here are my top five tips for booking your own dream venue.

2 1 4

SET A BUDGET

Once you have a rough idea of how many guests your destination wedding is likely to have, setting a budget will help narrow down the type of location you can realistically afford. Luckily, many destination venues offer wedding packages that include food, drinks, and décor, which can be customized to suit your needs. However, you’ll want to work with your vendors to stay on budget – which could mean making some sacrifices along the way.

GATHER INSPIRATION

When it came to choosing my dream venue, I took my time carefully considering the type of wedding I wanted. Social media is great for gathering photo and video inspiration, so that you can nail your perfect beach/ vineyard/castle vision. I’m a huge fan of saving your favourites to Pinterest or Instagram, and frequently checking in with your partner to make sure that you’re both on the same page.

3

GET IN TOUCH

When all is said and done and you’ve narrowed down your potential list of wedding venues, getting in contact with the events teams can give you a lot more information. In my experience, some overseas vendors are quick to respond, while others may keep to a more relaxed schedule. Depending on your personality, that could be a dream come true or a total nightmare. Finding a team that you feel comfortable and confident working with will only help your wedding day run more smoothly, so send an email or schedule a video chat, and you’ll be sure to find the destination wedding venue of your dreams in no time.

SET YOUR GUEST LIST

READ REVIEWS

If you’re opting to book your wedding venue without seeing it in person first, reading reviews from couples who have already gotten married there is an amazing resource. Google, wedding planning sites, and social media (again) will become your best friends. I also recommend searching up photographers that have shot weddings at the locations you have in mind as a way to gauge the overall experience. Scrolling through wedding albums online is a great way to see how the finished event comes together.

SMALLER

As with any kind of special event, knowing how many people you plan to invite can majorly influence the type of venue you choose. When planning a destination wedding though, you’ll also want to consider where your guests will be staying. Hotels are a great choice since they come with built-in lodging, whereas smaller venues might require a little more planning on your end to ensure that there are enough nearby accommodations for everyone on your list.

FUN AND GAMES

GIVE A WARM WELCOME

At this point, welcome bags are pretty standard when it comes to destination weddings. Leave the perfect bag of necessities in your guests’ rooms upon their arrival. Don’t forget the sunscreen, lip balm, hangover kit and sunglasses, plus local treats and alcohol.

Aside from the goodies, a firstnight welcome party is always fun and more appreciated than you think. Chances are that you’ll have some guests travelling with you that have never met each other. By the end of the week, you’ll all feel like family, but when you first arrive, things may be a little more awkward. Be sure to introduce each person and how you know them, then connect them to other people in your group by offering common interests. “Scott, meet Mark. Scott, you’ll be happy to know that Mark is a huge Star Wars fan.” And let the bonding begin.

Brewery. In Punta Cana, there is a street filled with fun bars and restaurants. Be sure to inquire about safety, stick together as a group and be respectful of the city you’re in.

ANY DESTINATION WEDDING WILL BE THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME, FOR YOU AND YOUR GUESTS. BUT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LEVEL-UP THE CORE MEMORIES, PLAN SOME EPIC EVENTS FOR YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

DRINK THE DRINKS

We hear that while people are on tropical vacations, they may indulge in a drink or two (shocking!). If this is the case for your group, work with your resort to set up a local pub crawl, or hit the craft breweries in the area. Costa Rica is filled with unique breweries, including Fuego Brewing Company and Whale Tail

You can also set up private tastings. Rum in Jamaica or Barbados, tequila and mezcal in Mexico, or Scotch whiskey in Scotland. There’s an art form to creating these yummy drinks and they all have different taste profiles. And no matter where you go, make sure you have a designated driver, of course.

designated driver, of course.

GET TO CLASS

Ask about a group class at your resort – yoga, snorkelling or maybe dance lessons so your guests can work on their moves before the wedding reception. Attending a private class allows you the freedom to be loud and have some fun with your people without annoying others.

HOST A SCAVENGER HUNT

If your group is a competitive bunch, organize a scavenger hunt within the grounds of your resort, or take it up a notch and hit the local area, Amazing Race style. The concierge at your desk may be able to help with fun clues, locations and maps. Be sure to have a prize for the winners, although bragging rights will usually suffice.

GIVE YOUR GUESTS SOME ALONE TIME

REMEMBER:

SET EXPECTATIONS FOR BOTH YOU AND YOUR GUESTS.

Keep your guests aware of “mandatory” events like the rehearsal dinner and “voluntary” events like wine tasting class. Do not be disappointed if some people don’t want to be involved in every activity.

Give your guests some alone time. Some couples may want a romantic dinner on their own, or perhaps a group will head off on a scuba diving excursion. You don’t have to be together every minute of the day.

Stream important events for those who can’t attend: the ceremony, reception speeches, and crowning the winner of the scavenger hunt.

Justine Allen

After creating magical days for others, this wedding planner (Ever After by Justine) finally had her big day! Wearing a Pronovias gown, Justine exchanged vows with Allen at Halekulani Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii in a fun, laidback event filled with good food, good music and 25 guests.

PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

“Once you have a date, let guests know ASAP,” says the bride. “It takes time and money to attend a destination wedding and people need to plan it in advance.”

FOODIE FUN:

e bride is a big foodie, so the menu was over the top. ey passed hors d’oeuvres such as crab cakes with tobiko aioli and a canapé of foie gras mousse with tru e. ere were also antipasto stations featuring hand-carved watermelon lled with fruit salad, peking duck station and kiawe grill station with lamb chops and shrimp. Justine says, “Most of the guests were from Canada so they actually thought the cocktail hour was the reception because there was so much food!”

TROPICAL DÉCOR:

Florals (by Flowergirls Hawaii) consisted of birds of paradise, anthuriums, Hibiscus and Protea. As for the dinner reception, a mix of bright emerald goblets and brown rattan chargers with gold cutleries really set a tone for a warm, intimate tropical get-together. (Rentals by Accel Rentals, day-of coordination by Engaging Moments)

Justine Kevin

With great risk, comes great reward. This couple took a chance on planning a wedding in Spain just by researching online and hoping for the best. The result was a magical week for themselves and 32 of their closest friends and family.

THE VENUE:

Masia Victoria is a 15th-century manor located in Sant Pere de Ribes, Barcelona, Spain. It is the perfect combination of old-school charm and modern amenities.

COMING TOGETHER:

“My favourite part was being able to spend the week in Spain with our favourite people,” says Justine. “Our vision was to create unity between our two families, friends included, just as a marriage uni es two individuals. It was amazing seeing everyone together enjoying each other’s company. It was a dream come true to see and now we have these memories for the rest of our lives.”

DESTINATION ADVICE:

Having planned everything herself, this bride says, “One piece of advice I have is to just bite the bullet and hire a planner! ey are the experts in their area with all of the right connections. Another piece of advice is to get out and explore the area. We met so many friendly people and found so much charm and beauty in the little town that made the experience that much more memorableand great for photos.”

THE LOOK:

Justine wore a gorgeous gown with a large bow accent, designed by Wtoo, and the groom looked handsome in a blue Harry Rosen suit.

Melissa Gerrardo

Looking gorgeous in a Justin Alexander wedding gown, Melissa said, “I do” to Gerrardo, who wore an Azzaro suit. A group of 64 guests, all from Toronto, watched the couple exchange vows at Bahia Principe Grand in Runaway Bay, Jamaica.

PHOTOGRAPHYBY TKM P HOTOGRAPHY REAL Weddings JAMAICA

WORDS OF WISDOM

“Surround yourself with love and support. After all, it is your day! You’ll want to look back with zero regrets, and memories to last a lifetime,” says the bride.

WARM WELCOME:

e Toronto couple placed welcome bags in their guests’ rooms, with toiletries and an extra special message. “ e welcome bags were personalized tote bags with “Jamaica - Sept 2022”, and they contained useful items such as Aloe vera, lip balm, bandages, just to name a few things” says Melissa. “ ey also had itinerary options for the week and itinerary for the wedding day. And a special note from our dog and cat back home. (Special shout-out to Carlos and Dolce!)”

FAVOURITE MOMENTS:

e groom says, “My favourite part was turning around and seeing Melissa walk down the aisle. She looked breathtaking, and I couldn’t wait to say, ‘I do.’” Melissa says, “My favourite part was having all the people I love the most together in another country. Everyone got to meet the people who have a special place in our lives. Plus, a vacation for everyone was well overdue!”

Alexandra & Jake

Twenty-four guests made the trip from Toronto, Halifax and New York to see Alexandra and Jake marry at Villa La Selva in Tuscany, Italy. When it comes to what will guests remember most, the couple says it was simply being able to travel as a group and coming together to celebrate.

LOOKING GOOD

THE REVEAL:

It’s tough to plan a destination wedding without seeing the venue in person, but the upside is the feeling of when you nally do get to see it. e bride says this was one of her favourite parts. “ at ‘wow’ moment when you show up to the venue and see how much better it is than you ever could have imagined. Planning from a di erent country really lowers unnecessary expectations and reduces stress so you get to enjoy the moments more.”

ENJOY YOUR LOCATION:

“Don’t get hung up on the small details,” says Alexandra. “Your guests will be wowed by the location alone, and will be most excited about being there with you to celebrate this special time. Planning a destination wedding really allowed us to step back and focus on those big moments, rather than getting hung up on the little things.”

STARS City of

Like it or not, many of us look to celebrities to set trends when it comes to fashion, travel and even weddings. Hollywood stars often venture to unbelievable destinations to exchange vows, and while you may not have the bank account of a celebrity, it is possible travel to their favourite places and create the destination wedding of your dreams.

Kourtney Kardashian & Travis Barker – PORTOFINO, ITALY

While the reality star and Blink-182 drummer initially tied the knot in Vegas, that ceremony came with no marriage license and therefore wasn’t legal, technically speaking. The two eventually legalized things in Santa Barbara, CA, but truly celebrated in Portofino, Italy.

The small fishing village located on the Italian Riviera might be one of the most stunning and romantic places to be married. The tiny, beautiful harbour is dotted with colourful boats and lined with vibrant homes. You’ll have epic views of both the Mediterranean Sea and the Italian countryside. There is no shortage of gorgeous venues, including churches, hotels and outdoor terraces, where you can take advantage of the crisp, clean air. Kardashian and Barker opted to exchange vows at a private villa, and then celebrate at Castello Brown, a centuries-old castle overlooking the Gulf of Portofino.

Penelope Cruz & Javier Bardem –BAHAMAS

This private celebrity couple were secretly married at a friend’s home in the Bahamas in 2010. And that’s the great thing about the Bahamas, you can choose a large resort or a private venue. There’s no shortage of options.

The islands of the Bahamas are known for crystal clear waters and its various islands, all with different vibes. While New Providence is the more popular island of tourists (it’s where you’ll find the capital of Nassau), you can also be married on the more intimate Islands like The Grand Bahama Island or Harbour Island. And we can’t forget Paradise Island, which is home to Atlantis (worth a visit, even if you don’t get married there).

No matter which Island you choose, you’ll be greeted with stunning beaches and colourful backdrops. The best part is that you can be married on one island and then move to a second island for your honeymoon, so you’ll truly feel like you’re on vacation.

Ross Matthews & Dr. Wellingthon Garcia –PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO

If the name isn’t quite ringing a bell, picture Ross Matthews judging your favourite drag queens on RuPaul’s Drag Race, or beside Drew Barrymore on her talk show, probably watching her sit much too close to a guest.

Ross married his now-husband in 2022 at Almar Resort in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Among the 110 guests was Drew Barrymore herself, as the flower girl! Matthew welcomed guests to the wedding with gift bags of skincare, including toner, sunscreen and lip balm.

Puerto Vallarta has been a long-time favourite destination for Canadians and an ideal place to tie the knot. There are numerous all-inclusive resorts, many with dedicated wedding planning staff. Additionally, there are various private villas available for rent, as well as smaller beachfront properties that can accommodate fewer guests, but allow for a romantic ceremony in the sand. And of course, there are a number of churches available as well. For the best weather, plan your day between October and April to take advantage of the dry season. By the end of May, you’re heading into rainy season (with rain nearly every single day), so you’re taking a risk with a summer wedding date. But no matter which season you choose, be sure to be ready with an indoor back-up plan.

Keleigh Sperry & Miles Teller – MAUI, HAWAII

While Keleigh Sperry is an actress herself, you’re probably more familiar with Top Gun star Miles Teller. The two were married in 2019 at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua Hotel in Maui. The couple chose the location as it held a special place in the bride’s heart as the setting of her childhood family vacations.

Maui is truly a magical place. The air smells like sweet fruit. The island is overwhelmingly green and lush. The white-sand beaches are pristine (although, the black volcanic sand beach is a must-see as well). And you’re almost guaranteed to see rainbows nearly every day. Maui is tropical and romantic, and perfect for a small or large-scale wedding.

Host your ceremony and reception at Haiku Mill, a gorgeous old sugar mill that has been transformed into a wedding venue recognized around the world as one of the best. Be adventurous and get married at sunset aboard the Pride of Maui, a 65-foot catamaran. Stand hand-in-hand cliffside, overlooking the ocean as you exchange vows. Or, book with one of the many 5-star resorts and hotels on the island.

While in Maui, your family and friends will love the relaxed vibes, but also the many unique activities, like the Road to Hana tour – an 8-hour drive through the island, visiting majestic rainforests, taking in incredible views and maybe jumping into a waterfall.

Sophie Turner & Joe Jonas –PROVENCE, FRANCE

France just might be the most romantic country in the world – the food, the wine, the language, the music. Most people automatically think Paris, but Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner and boy-bander Joe Jonas selected Provence to say, “I do.”

After a very surprise ceremony at A Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, the couple chose Château de Tourreau in Provence to truly commemorate their vows. The 20-acre property is the definition of lavish, so not exactly achievable for the average pair of newlyweds, but there are other possibilities in the south of France.

Provence is home to gorgeous wineries, private estates and lush gardens, all perfect for ultra-romantic wedding ceremonies. When it comes to photos, the rolling lavender fields provide a magical backdrop.

La Lauren, for example, is a whimsical garden that can accommodate 80 guests, and you have the option to be married in the garden itself, or in the lavender fields. Baumanière Les Baux-De-Provence is a lovely farmhouse surrounded not only by lavender, but also rose gardens. The Provence countryside is simply like no other.

Chrishell Stause & G Flip – LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

The question about the legality of this marriage was still present at our press date, but we’ve seen the photos (just not the license). Either way, Las Vegas is a go-to for celebrity nuptials and it was no different for Selling Sunset’s Chrishell when she married Australian singer G Flip. It seems to be a trend for celebs to tie the knot in Sin City without the government documentation, and then make it legal in a second ceremony at a later date.

When you think Vegas, you think tacky chapels and Elvis impersonators dressed in white, most likely. And while it’s totally fine if that’s your thing, Vegas is actually a town of luxury. Hotels like The Venetian, Caesars Palace and Aria all have stunning wedding venues. Many hotels have their own in-house florists, hair and makeup stylists, jewelry retailers and everyone else you’d need for your big day.

If you’re interested in a truly unique experience, couples can be married on the High Roller Ferris Wheel, 550 feet above the ground. Or maybe exchange vows at the Mob Museum, a popular tourist attraction geared toward the history of organized crime. (They also have a speakeasy in which you can order cocktails hidden within books, so not to be caught breaking any prohibition laws.) And The Neon Museum – a graveyard for retired flashy signage found on the Vegas strip – provides a one-of-a-kind, Instagrammable wedding venue.

And of course, you can also be wed in a helicopter, at a Taco Bell, in the faux Eiffel Tower, or in the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay. The options are endless.

Amal Alamuddin & George Clooney –VENICE, ITALY

Famous for being a bachelor, it was surprising when George Clooney finally said, “I do,” but he became a married man in 2014 in Venice, Italy, when he exchanged vows with Amal. Family and friends joined the couple for a three-day celebration, starting things out with separate bachelor and bachelorette parties.

The two were married in a brief civil service and then joined for a reception at the Aman Canal Grande, which is one of Venice’s most recognizable palazzos on the Grand Canal. The elegant and sophisticated venue suited the stars perfectly.

Hosting a destination wedding in Venice is no easy feat; it’s a pretty glamorous location and will definitely take some planning. But the scenery, the photo ops by the Rialto Bridge and the beyond-stunning architecture are all well worth the planning process. While it may seem like a good idea, and definitely unique, getting married in a gondola isn’t the best concept. It is small, obviously, and the canals can get crowded. The last thing you want to do is share your first married kiss as another gondola knocks into you. Instead, focus on the many opulent hotels, lavish churches and magnificent palaces that exist in the city.

After the wedding events come to a close, you and your guests can tour the city, exploring Doge’s Palace and Saint Mark’s Basilica, indulging in pasta and gelato, and sipping wine in cafés.

SEA, SUN and SAND

9 beachy wedding rules to live by

Getting married with your toes in the sand and the sun shining down sounds like a magical dream, doesn’t it? Well, that dream can become a reality, but there are a few steps to take to be sure it goes as smoothly as possible. Make your beach wedding one to remember.

DRESS THE PART

A beachy wedding wardrobe is quite different that your normal wedding attire. Consider lighter, more breathable materials for both gowns and suits. You don’t want to be sweating your lace off as you exchange vows. Know that veils and wind don’t mix, so if you had your heart set on a veil, rethink the choice. Wear proper shoes (or none at all) so you aren’t sinking in the sand.

PROTECT THE RINGS

Sure, it’s cute to have a toddler wander down the aisle with the rings. Having your wedding bands dropped and possibly lost in the sand? Not so cute. Be very, very careful with the transfer of the rings and the exchange of rings, too.

GIVE SHADE

If possible, try to have some kind of shade, especially for older guests. If it isn’t an option, provide umbrellas and bottled water.

STOP SHORT

Keep things sweet and simple. Some ceremonies, particularly your more religious ones, tend to push the time. No one wants to be baking under the sun for longer than they have to, so get straight to the point.

CHOOSE A GOOD SPOT

Not a fan of being the centre of attention? Then select an appropriate time and place for the ceremony. Many resorts are on public beaches, which leaves the possibility of random guests.

And some resort guests may stumble in to watch, as well. If this doesn’t bother you, go crazy; but if you’d rather keep things more intimate, speak with your wedding planner about finding a new location.

GET A PERMIT

If you have your heart set on a private, secluded beach, you better be sure you’re allowed to be on it, let alone be married. Investigate any necessary permits for the ceremony, sound equipment or temporary structures (like tents or chuppahs).

SPEAK UP

The sound of crashing waves is really romantic, until it drowns out your vows. Have a microphone handy so your guests won’t miss a word.

PICK THE RIGHT FLOWERS

If you’re in a tropical setting, go with tropical blooms. Makes sense, right? The colours will provide great contrast against the sand and water, plus they will hold up under the heat. Be sure your décor florals are wind-proof by strapping them down tightly to your chairs or gazebo.

BACK IT UP

This should go without saying, but have a back-up plan in case of rain. This may mean selecting a different location, or just being able to push the time by an hour or two. Be sure to ask your onsite wedding coordinator for all the options.

ARUBA ONE HAPPY ISLAND

JUST SOME

THINK ABOUT MONEY, HONEY

When budgeting, don’t forget about conversion rates. Prices may seem good, but when Canadian dollars are converted to foreign dollars, you may be surprised at the difference. Take into account prices for excursions or meals, or if you’re at an allinclusive resort, tipping.

CARRY-ON, MY FRIEND

Never pack your essentials in your checked luggage. Your dress, suit, accessories, rehearsal outfit and shoes all need to be safely stowed in your carry-on. Remind your wedding party, family and friends of the same thing. All important items should stay with you.

LOOK FOR PERKS, PAL

You’re getting married so you deserve all the special treatment. Don’t be afraid to “name drop” your wedding plans when booking things. Who knows? You may get bumped to first class, be upgraded to a suite, have a romantic dinner comped or be blessed with a pre-wedding massage.

KEEP IT SIMPLE, BUDDY

The little details are what makes a wedding unique, but that doesn’t mean you have to bring in a million personal décor items. Small things like menus, place cards and other signage can really add to your vibe. But try to lean into your destination setting. You may not need to spend as much on florals if you’re surrounded by palm trees and hibiscus plants. Speak to your contact person/planner at your venue about shipping ahead, because (shockingly), they often don’t have the space to store your dozen boxes of Edison bulbs or cases of wedding favours.

Embrace everything local.

You’ve secured the date, booked the venue and sent out the invites. Now that the big stuff is out of the way, it’s time to think about the little things. Here are a few tips to make your destination wedding go smoothly.

5 6

PICK A PLANNER, PARTNER

We all know that planning a wedding is stressful, but a destination wedding? That’s a ceremony, reception and group trip, all in one. Working with a planner could be the best decision you make. In fact, working with someone at home along with an on-site planner at your destination is the perfect combination to take the details off your plate and allow you to relax and enjoy the day (or week!).

BE ACCESSIBLE, MATE

Take a good look at your guest list. Is there anyone who may have difficulty with a long walk to a ceremony on the beach? Is the resort friendly to those with mobility needs? How long is the drive from airport to destination? These details need to be worked out well before the day to avoid anyone missing important parts of your wedding celebrations.

7

SPLURGE ON ONE THING, CHUM

Leave room in your budget to hire a really great photographer. If a photographer is included in your wedding package through your venue, ask to see a portfolio, or images from their last five weddings. You may want to invest in a local professional who is more your style, or even bring a photographer with you. After spending a lot of cash to be married in a stunning location, you’ll want photos that showcase that.
