When planning their July wedding, Charlot and Jonathan, who live in Toronto, knew they needed a destination where their families, who are scattered throughout England, Norway and Canada, could “meet in the middle.”
They settled on Portugal’s Valverde Sintra Palácio de Seteais, a five-star hotel set on the mountainside of Sintra that instantly brought tears to Charlot’s eyes. With its expansive grounds and opulent interiors, Valverde was the perfect choice for a wedding that blended European elegance with a touch of Portuguese charm.
“My husband, who is half Portuguese, and I embraced Portuguese culture and infused our welcome party with local cuisine, traditional music and tile and cork trivets as thank-you gifts to our guests,” says Charlot. Lunch was served buffet style, with classic Portuguese dishes including grilled sardines, to give guests a taste of local flavours.
The following day, the couple celebrated their marriage in Sintra “at the historic Valverde Palácio De Seteais, a UNESCO World Heritage Site,” she adds. The hotel, set in a romantic palace, offers breathtaking views of the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace and even better, it housed the majority of the couple’s 124 guests.
“I wore my dream wedding dress by Pnina Tornai and made my entrance in a classic horse and carriage accompanied by my father and the strains of a string quartet.”
The couple also had the privilege of having the award-winning Portuguese cake designer Julie Deffense create a stunning custom wedding cake – a four-tier masterpiece with layers of caramel and almond Swiss meringue buttercream encased in an all-white palette with subtle gold accents.
“Our goal was to create a timeless, romantic atmosphere that felt both intimate and enchanting, capturing the spirit of old-world sophistication,” says Charlot. “Additionally, since it’s a hotel, we could stay there with our family, making the experience even more intimate and meaningful. Once we decided on Portugal, we wanted to make sure that if people were travelling all that way, they really got to experience the beauty, the culture and the food. It really meant everything to bring our families and friends to the same place.”

AN ISLAND WEDDING DELIVERS AN UNCONVENTIONAL YET INTIMATE EXPERIENCE ON ULTRA-ROMANTIC SANDY SHORES. DOUG WALLACE GOES ON LOCATION TO FIND OUT HOW TO DESIGN A TROPICAL DAY TO REMEMBER.
The scenario is a familiar one for many brides-to-be. You want your destination wedding to be small and intimate, but there’s something missing – a special ingredient to take it beyond the ordinary. Then, the “aha” moment arrives. “An island wedding offers an unmatched sense of intimacy and privacy,” says Patricia Rozos, event planner at Almare, a new Marriott Luxury Collection resort on Isla Mujeres, off the coast of Cancún. “It allows couples to truly get away from it all – the natural scenery provides stunning backdrops.”
It’s an excellent idea, but this plan requires a few extra steps. And while there will be trade-offs, the benefits are myriad and well worth the effort. You will be in your own little world, enjoying the exclusivity of a tranquil island vibe, your guests easily bonding and feeling part of something special.
Isla Mujeres is an excellent natural location, one anchored to unspoiled beaches and lush scenery. A mere 25-minute boat ride from Cancún, it’s smaller and more serene than mainland Mexico, yet still easy to reach. It’s small enough to feel informal, but big enough to have proper amenities. You can have a low-key, budget-friendly Caribbean-style wedding without the full isolation or complication of smaller
islands farther afield. “Planning a wedding on Isla Mujeres begins with understanding the couple’s vision and setting a clear budget,” Rozos says. “We then discuss the different options for the ceremony, cocktail and reception, coordinate transportation through our service desk and assemble a team of trusted vendors. Given the island setting, we also prioritize logistics early on, such as ferry schedules, equipment rentals and any additional details.”
Rozos says that costs and logistics for any off-island requirements need to be factored in. Vendors may need to travel farther to participate. Items such as fresh florals and large décor pieces may cost extra to import. Entertainment professionals need to be experienced with island events and understand the logistics involved. “Our process is very handson,” Rozos notes, “from the ceremony setup to the last guest’s departure.”
Almare is also currently pursuing certification as a Queer Destinations designation. This is an international credential that tourism businesses can earn to demonstrate their commitment to offering LGBTQ+ couples and wedding parties a safe and inclusive environment.
The coziness of an adults-only, all-inclusive like Almare is one of many reasons why weddings are starting to fill the function calendar. “The ideal size of a wedding here is 50 or 60 guests,” Rozos says, “although the rooftop can accommodate 200 people.” With the hotel’s 109 rooms, 200 wedding guests can have the entire place to themselves. There are multiple areas of the property to make your own – on the roof or at the beach that is mere steps from the large pool. “As you can expect, all our brides are very different,” Rozos adds. “We draw inspiration from their ideas to create something splendid within their guidelines. My favourite part of the job is to see their faces when they see what we’ve done.”
Island weddings understandably also require maritime transportation plans, which can be a concern for guests with mobility issues or those with children in tow. But Rozos feels the longer travel day pays off. “We coordinate timing carefully to ensure a smooth experience. We also provide guests with detailed travel guides and can arrange shuttles from the airport to the [Cancún] pier.”
As with any sunspot, the weather report is always a consideration. Islands can be more susceptible to storms, with fewer contingency plans. “Weather-related delays or transportation challenges can occur,” Rozos says, “but with proper planning and strong local partnerships, these potential issues are manageable. We always build in contingency time and have backup plans in place. We monitor weather forecasts leading up to the event and stay flexible to adjust timelines if needed. Our goal is to make sure the celebration goes ahead beautifully, rain or shine.”
It’s not all about the ceremony. Many islands like Isla Mujeres also offer ways for a couple to take a few moments for themselves while experiencing the local culture or being immersed in nature. A wedding planner can help arrange these little “retreats” using their approved tourism partners. Take, for example, an early morning hike to Mirador Punta Sur, which makes for a kaleidoscopic romantic hour or two. This seaside point and observation park is renowned as the easternmost point in Mexico – the first part of the country to welcome the sunrise, they say. Beyond exploring the ample hiking trails, visitors can also sign up for local adventures, island tours, snorkelling and scuba diving, a whale shark tour or golfing. The island’s Underwater Museum of Art features more than 500 life-sized sculptures that focus your attention on the conservation of coral life.
Come sunset, guests can congregate to toast the day’s events or nuptials. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect place to celebrate your pinch-me moment in time. And as the moonlight begins to shimmer off the pool and the servers swirl about, you will no doubt start planning your anniversary.

In the breathtaking beauty of St. Ann, Jamaica, this styled shoot at Borghinvilla Wedding Venue was the essence of a lush, tropical romance.
“With its dramatic cliffs, crystalclear waters and gorgeous gardens, Borghinvilla provided the perfect backdrop for a wedding that blends natural beauty with modern sophistication,” says Danielle Andrews, president of The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada (WPIC) and one of the designers behind this wedding project. “Every detail was thoughtfully curated to highlight the unique character of this destination
venue and to inspire couples dreaming of a wedding as vibrant and unforgettable as their love story.”
The models brought their rich cultural roots, which added even more depth to the setting, notes Andrews. The groom, though Canadian, has Trinidadian and Ecuadorian heritage, while the bride is from Jamaica with Jamaican-Chinese roots as well. This diverse Caribbean background influenced Andrews and her team’s vision, inspiring them to incorporate elements that celebrated the vibrancy and warmth of the couple’s shared island roots.

The day began with a glamorous first look, where the groom arrived in a sleek Mercedes to find his bride waiting in front of Borghinvilla’s grand entrance, says Andrews. Against the villa’s stunning architecture and lush tropical surroundings, the couple shared a private, heartfelt moment, setting the tone for the rest of the celebration.
Before the ceremony, they enjoyed a quiet poolside toast at a beautifully styled Mimosa bar, where fresh tropical fruits and chilled champagne awaited them. This intimate preceremony ritual, surrounded by the vibrant flowers floating in the pool, offered the couple a chance to soak in the joy and excitement of the day.
The theme, Tropical Romance, came to life through an overabundance of fuchsia and red roses intertwined with monstera leaves, setting a lush, exotic atmosphere from ceremony to celebration. The ceremony arch –overflowing with hundreds of vibrant blooms – created a captivating focal point, enhanced by a sparkling chandelier and a delicate crystal curtain backdrop. This transparent curtain provided an elegant frame for the couple without obstructing the view of Borghinvilla’s rugged cliffs and the endless blue sea beyond.
After exchanging vows, the couple transitioned to a chic reception area adorned with sheer fuchsia curtains and another magnificent floral arch. A mirrored table served as the centrepiece, brimming with even more fuchsia and roses, monstera leaves and elegant tableware. Flowers floated across the pool, and the garden swing, wrapped in blooms and greenery, invited guests to enjoy the space from every angle. There were custom-etched coconuts and a tropical cake adorned with coconuts.
Our bride and groom radiated style with three distinct looks throughout the day. For the ceremony, the bride wore a stunning strapless ballgown, while the groom looked dashing in a green linen suit that added an effortless island charm.
At the reception, the bride’s look transformed to an elegant beaded blush gown, complementing the groom’s salmon pink linen suit.
To end the day on a playful note, the couple donned chic swimwear for a poolside champagne toast. The bride’s asymmetrical white swimsuit with oversized floral accents and the groom’s fitted black-andwhite bathing trunks were perfect for a champagne moment on a clear kayak – a fun, adventurous touch that captured the spirit of the Caribbean.
Every bloom, detail and moment brought this vision of Tropical Romance to life, says Andrews, capturing the possibilities of a Borghinvilla wedding and leaving everyone inspired by this dreamy destination.
Thinking of making your big day a big getaway as well? Here, an insider’s take on where to start.
THE EXPERT
SANDRA PRIETO ROBLES
Regional Wedding Manager of the Americas, Palladium Hotel Group
TODAY’S BRIDE: How far in advance should you start planning a destination wedding?
SANDRA PRIETO ROBLES: It’s best to start planning your destination wedding 12 to 18 months in advance to secure your preferred venue, accommodations and vendors. This gives you ample time to research locations, send save-the-dates and ensure guests can make travel arrangements. If you’re planning during peak season, booking early is even more important. For a more intimate celebration, a shorter timeline of six to nine months can work, but flexibility is key!
TB: Your top tip to the couple when deciding on a destination wedding?
SPR: Choosing a destination that resonates with both partners is key! It’s not just about finding a beautiful location but selecting one that aligns with your shared vision, budget and the experience you want for your guests. Consider factors like weather, local culture and available amenities to ensure a seamless and memorable celebration.
TB: Do you recommend the couple visit the destination prior to the wedding?
SPR: Yes, if possible, I highly recommend visiting the destination before the wedding. A pre-wedding visit allows couples to tour venues, meet with vendors, sample menu options and finalize important details in person. It also helps them get a feel for the atmosphere and ensure the destination aligns with their vision. If an in-person visit isn’t feasible, virtual tours and video calls with the Weddings by Palladium team can be a great alternative.
TB: Favourite Destination(s)?
SPR: Jamaica is a top choice for couples seeking a vibrant wedding destination, where lush tropical landscapes, live reggae music and authentic island flavours create an unforgettable celebration. Meanwhile, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, with its whitesand beaches and endless opportunities for romance. For those drawn to a mix of culture and excitement, Cancún stands out with its stunning Caribbean waters, world-class hospitality and nearby Mayan ruins, ensuring a wedding experience as dynamic as it is breathtaking.
TB: Any new, up-and-coming destinations you're seeing?
SPR: There’s a growing trend toward Riviera Nayarit and Tulum, both in Mexico, which offer a more intimate and eco-conscious vibe. These destinations are perfect for couples seeking something a little more unique or off-the-beaten-path while still providing incredible natural beauty and high-end experiences. However, we have also seen a surge in popularity for Punta Cana which has been very trendy lately due to flight connectivity, great service, amazing food, hospitality and culture!

“We are an LGBTQ+ couple with a mission of normalizing queer love and travel through our platform,” says Kirstie Pike, one half of the duo along with Christine Diaz, behind the social platform, On Airplane Mode. “Over the last year I planned a secret proposal in Bora Bora, and I am so happy with how it all came together,” she adds. “We wanted to share the story with you … to continue sharing positive queer joy!”
The unforgettable moment took place during a surprise proposal on a faux “work trip” to the breathtaking island of Bora Bora. Kirstie meticulously planned the proposal of a lifetime at the luxurious Four Seasons Bora Bora. Under the guise of a romantic photoshoot, the couple took a beautifully decorated canoe with vibrant tropical flowers to a secluded sandbar that could only be described as something out of a movie. As the sun gently peeked through the clouds, they were greeted by a stunning aisle of tropical blooms, leading to the top of the sandbar. There, with the serene sound of a ukulele playing “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” Kirstie got down on one knee and asked Christine to be her partner for life. In a heartwarming moment that will be cherished forever, Christine said yes!
