Glowing DOWN THE AISLE
FEELING BEAUTIFUL ON THE BIG DAY – AND EVERYDAY – STARTS LONG BEFORE THE MAIN EVENT. TWO SKINCARE EXPERTS GIVE US THE INSIDE SCOOP ON TREATING SKIN CONCERNS SO BRIDES AND GROOMS CAN FEEL CONFIDENT ON THEIR SPECIAL DAY.
BY LUCY MAZZUCCO
he countdown to the big day is often filled with stress and heightened emotions, which can take a toll on the skin. For brides and grooms who struggle with skin conditions, prioritizing self-care is key to avoiding flareups. “I often tell patients that skin health is a marathon, not a sprint. For conditions like rosacea, eczema or psoriasis, it is ideal to start planning at least six to 12 months ahead of the wedding,” says Joanna Auguste, aesthetic nurse practitioner, The Face Lab. “This allows time to calm inflammation, strengthen the skin barrier and introduce more collagen-stimulating treatments in a gradual way so the skin has time to adjust.”
“I advise patients with any conditions to use a skincare routine that is simple and to limit the number of products used. In practical terms, I tell them to cleanse and then apply any prescription treatments to clean skin prior to using a moisturizer”
Dr. Lisa Kellett, dermatologist at DLK on Avenue in Toronto, also recommends starting skin prep at least six months in advance of the wedding. “The most important step that brides and grooms can take is to see a dermatologist as soon as possible – preferably at least six months before the big event as medical treatments for some skin conditions might require systemic or topical treatments that can take time to work,” she says. “In general, I advise patients with any conditions to use a skincare routine that is simple and to limit the number of
products used. In practical terms, I tell them to cleanse and then apply any prescription treatments to clean skin prior to using a moisturizer.”
Keep Calm and Carry On
When tackling skin conditions, Auguste says the goal is to keep the skin barrier strong and calm. In order to do so, she recommends a gentle, non-foaming cleanser, a fragrance-free barrier repair moisturizer and a mineral sunscreen. “Niacinamide and ceramides are perfect ingredients for supporting the skin barrier. I love Epicutis’ Lipid Serum and Lipid Recovery Mask, Alastin’s Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer, and AlumierMD’s HydraCalm Facial Moisturizer and SensiCalm Gentle
Facial Cleanser,” she says, adding that it’s important to avoid products with harsh scrubs, high concentrations of glycolic or salicylic acids and those that are heavily fragranced, as they can all worsen sensitivity.
Dr. Kellett notes that both eczema and psoriasis can affect the epidermis and make the skin more sensitive to certain topicals agents. As a result, she also advises against using harsh cleansers, strong toners and creams and lotions with glycolic and lactic acid. “Rosacea is an inflammatory condition characterized by blushing, flushing, papules and pustules. These patients are very sensitive to multiple topicals and should look for products that are formulated for more sensitive skin types,” she says.
The betweendifference the various skin “acids” and how they should be used, according to the experts
LACTIC ACID
Auguste says lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that gently exfoliates while also providing hydration, making it more suitable for sensitive skin.
GLYCOLIC ACID
According to Dr. Kellett, glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that can help with skin exfoliation and superficial brown spots.
SALICYLIC ACID
Auguste says salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that penetrates pores to help with congestion and acne but should generally be avoided on inflamed skin.
MANDELIC ACID
Dr. Kellett says that mandelic acid is often used as a gentle alpha hydroxy acid for exfoliation in patients with more sensitive skin.
HYALURONIC ACID
Despite its name, Auguste says hyaluronic acid is not categorized as an exfoliating acid at all. “It is actually a humectant, which means it draws water into the skin for deep hydration and plumpness, a perfect ingredient for sensitive, dry skin.”
Glow Therapy
When it comes to tackling skin concerns, Auguste says laser treatments such as Aerolase or an Nd: YAG laser can help reduce redness and visible blood vessels with no downtime. She suggests pairing this with calming facials and GlacialSkin (CryoFacials), which she says use controlled cooling to help skin appear more even and less reactive and also target inflammation. For an eczema flare specifically, Auguste says the initial focus should be on barrier repair. “Treatments such as GlacialSkin, hydrating and barrier repair can help calm inflammation and reduce itching or sensitivity. We typically avoid aggressive treatments and instead emphasize gentle hydration if there are
outbreaks.” For psoriasis, Auguste says laser therapies such as Aerolase or UV light therapy may be helpful, but notes that it is a complex condition and that treatments should align with any medical care provided by a dermatologist. “Once the skin barrier is intact and there are no flares, treatments such as non-ablative laser rejuvenation and microneedling can help build collagen and tighten skin when done under careful guidance,” she says.
Daily Defense
When it comes to protecting the skin, Dr. Kellett says that consistent SPF protection year-round is key for all patients but is especially important for those with an abnormal epidermis. Auguste also believes that SPF is non-negotiable when it comes to tackling skin concerns as sun exposure is a top trigger for flare-ups in rosacea, eczema and psoriasis. “Daily use of a mineral SPF helps protect against irritation and future flare-ups, preserves the results of any treatments and minimizes post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation,” she says. “SPF is your skin’s best insurance policy for looking calm, even-toned and having glowing skin.”

You’ve probably thought, “I want my wedding day makeup to look like me, only more polished and beautiful.” These top tips will position you to win the day, feeling fabulous, calm and completely like yourself.
Set Yourself Up for Success
If you’re hiring a makeup artist, make sure your bridal party understands that you’re the priority and they may not be able to do anyone else’s makeup (or one or two others – at most). Sharing an artist among too many people leads to stress. If you’re doing your own makeup, approach it professionally. Set up somewhere quiet and comfortable, and with natural light (ideally by a window). A relaxed start sets the tone for your day.
Do a Trial Run
A makeup trial is a must, whether working with an artist or doing it yourself. It’s a chance to test different looks and see how they wear in real life and on camera. If you can, schedule the trial for your engagement shoot or bridal shower for added value and testing.

Essential Wedding Day Makeup Tips
Here, a pro makeup artist gives us her best advice on how to make your look last the whole day
By Tana D'Amico
Prep, Protect and Prime
If you’re getting a facial, book it at least three weeks before the wedding to give your skin time to recover from any reaction. Equally important, avoid using any new products, especially things such as eyelash glue or anything applied all over your face, to prevent surprise sensitivities.
On your wedding day, start with a lightweight moisturizer that hydrates without heaviness. Let it fully absorb for smooth, long-lasting makeup. ILIA The Base Face Milk is excellent for soothing and reducing redness.
If your wedding is outdoors, you need SPF. After moisturizing, use a sunscreen that’s fast-absorbing and doesn’t leave a white cast. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer DryTouch SPF70 is a favourite.
Next, apply a primer to help your makeup last. Let it dry fully before applying foundation (a handheld fan can speed things up). Tatcha Liquid Silk Canvas Primer works well with any foundation.
Build a Foundation – Lightly
Full-coverage foundations can look heavy in daylight and in photos. Instead, choose medium/lightweight, buildable options like Armani’s Luminous Silk or Maybelline’s Super Stay 30HR Lumi-Matte.
Waterproof Everything
When tears, hugs and heat are expected, it’s crucial to use waterproof products. L'Oréal Paris Waterproof Voluminous Mascara is a go-to, and for liners, Lancôme’s Le Stylo Waterproof Eyeliner or Maybelline Tattoo Studio Gel Pencil are favourites. For a softer, more romantic look, choose a brown pencil over black. Finish with a waterproof and transfer-proof setting spray like Urban Decay’s All Nighter.
Stay in Your Colour Zone
Pick shades that suit your undertone. Warm tones work best for peach, gold and soft brown; cool tones suit taupe, rose and mauve. Not sure? If you tan easily, you’re likely warm; if you burn rst, you’re probably cool. Try Anastasia’s Soft Glam Palette for warm/neutral skin or Urban Decay’s Naked3 Mini for cool tones.
Shine Happens, Be Ready
Set your makeup with a loose translucent powder. For touch-ups, keep a pressed powder compact (with a mirror) to control the T-zone shine.
Buy Your Lip Colour in Advance
Lipstick will need reapplying, so own the exact shade used for your trial. Avoid ultra-glossy formulas that smudge easily. Instead, go for a creamy, long-wearing option like MAC Cosmetics’ MACximal Sleek Satin Lipstick. For higher shine, try Maybelline’s SuperStay Vinyl Ink. Use a lipliner to prevent the colour from feathering.
Layer Your Blush
For dewy freshness, apply powder blush rst; then, with a clean brush, gently layer cream or liquid blush on top. Peach and pink shades are always attering.
Mind the Details
Choose natural-looking false lashes like Ardell DemiWhispies and avoid thick, heavy strips. Keep contouring soft and well-blended. When you look back at your wedding photos, you’ll still love what you see: a glowing, timeless version of you.

to what the groom may actually wear outside of his wedding day. The goal should be to bring a groom's uniqueness and own style to the big day and not feel he was simply ‘renting’ or buying a suit/tux that he would only wear once. It should be something he would keep in his closet for any occasion.
STYLE NOTE: Go sandstone and subtly striped in a doublebreasted, or a classic navy twobutton. Up the wow factor with a textured bow tie or a pop of colour against a white shirt and add a refined wrist watch for a touch of elegance.

VINTAGE Appeal
A love for nostalgia and bespoke style is fuelling the modern bride’s choice to wearing something old on their wedding day
BY ALISON MCGILL
hen Chenelle D’Cruz began shopping for her wedding dress, she hit two bridal boutiques in hopes of finding ‘the one.’ Though she loved a few of the gowns she tried on, she realized the styles she gravitated towards were trying to look vintage. “Something felt off for me and I thought, why not try on the real deal?” D’Cruz shares. She booked an appointment at Toronto’s Vintage Bride and when she arrived at the shop, she got chills. “I was in awe of the quality of the fabrics and unique dresses,” D’Cruz says. “It was like taking a magical walk through many different eras all at once. I found myself envisioning all the different brides and their wedding days.”
“It
was like taking a magical walk through many different eras all at once. I found myself envisioning all the different brides and their wedding days”
Walking in, D’Cruz says she had no idea what she wanted and had a blast trying on dresses from several different decades guided by store owner Cher Thornton. She ultimately landed on a 1939 candlelit gown with a V-collar, covered buttons, gigot sleeves and a sweeping cathedral train. Recent Toronto bride Lauren says she had a similar experience shopping at Thornton’s boutique for her wedding gown, a silk and lace layered slip dress design from the 1920s.
“I loved finding out the history behind my dress,” Lauren shares. “It originally came from the New York-area, which made it feel even more special, like it had lived another story before mine.”
Going with a vintage wedding dress guarantees a romantic air of nostalgia and a one-of-a-kind look, and it’s also a sustainable fashion choice you can feel good about. Giving new life to something old that's also a piece of fashion history is a special thing, and it’s something Canadian custom bridal designer Catherine Langlois is particularly passionate about.
“The excitement of a bride bringing in her mother’s dress or a ‘found’ dress is like Christmas for me,” Langlois says. “Many times, we can’t use the entire gown because the style is too dated, or the fabric may not be in the best condition. I have also done complete restyles of an existing gown.”
Trend wise, Langlois says currently the biggest throwback decade brides are tapping into is the ’90s. “The drop Basque waistlines, Vivienne Westwood-inspired corsets and full or draped skirts are having a moment. I’m also seeing a sleeper trend towards dresses from the 1930s, which had an ease and sensual femininity about them. Though it’s not quite hit vintage status yet, Catherine Middleton’s gown from 2011 is also an iconic style many brides are asking for.”
“I loved finding out the history behind my dress... It originally came from the New York-area, which made it feel even more special, like it had lived another story before mine”
If you are looking to land an old-world wedding gown, Lauren’s best advice as a vintage bride is to be open-minded and patient when shopping. “This is a different experience; you’re not walking into a boutique where you can order your size. Focus more on the feeling a dress gives, not the label or decade it’s from. When I found my dress, I knew it was the one because it made me feel like a piece of art.”

Hallmark Memories
A devoted fan of Hallmark Christmas movies, Emily wanted nothing more than to feel like a star on her wedding day – and that dream came true when she married Marcello in December 2024 at Toronto’s Eglinton Grand, a historic theatre brimming with old Hollywood glamour. Festive florals and twinkling lights set a magical tone, while custom ornaments and classic carols paid tribute to the season. The result was a love-filled celebration straight out of a Hallmark fairytale.

WINTRY DETAILS: Embracing the ‘Winter Wonderland, Christmas Fairytale’ theme, Emily wore a sparkling Calla Blanche gown adorned with frosty, shimmering details that made her feel like a princess. Guests were greeted with a Christmas movie-style poster of the couple and later took personalized Christmas ornaments as cherished keepsakes.
MUSIC TO OUR EARS: A pianist set the tone during cocktail hour with instrumental renditions of Christmas classics such as ‘Silent Night,’ while a saxophonist provided a smooth soundtrack for dinner. Adding a personal touch, Emily’s cousin performed on acoustic guitar for the couple’s first dance.
Love on the East Coast
Allison didn’t have high expectations after connecting with Gregor on Hinge, showing up to their first date in an old T-shirt with holes in it. But as the couple has since shown, the unexpected can lead to happily ever after – a journey that culminated in their June 2025 wedding. Surrounded by about 150 friends and family, they exchanged vows on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, at the same lodge where a young Allison once watched a wedding ceremony that sparked her own dreams of a fairytale celebration.

OUT-OF-TOWNERS: With the nearest airport two and a half hours away, attending the wedding was no small feat for guests. “Having so many of the people in our lives up in a remote area that holds such significance was really surreal,” said Allison and Gregor.
PHOTO OP: The day after the wedding, the couple and their photographer set out on a short sunset hike to make up for photos missed during the busy wedding morning. Even without makeup or styled hair, Allison says the results were unforgettable. “Had things gone as planned, we would not have been greeted with the most stunning sunset on an empty trail – it was pure magic.”
Well Worth the Wait
Sometimes the best things in life are worth the wait – just ask Emma and Bryant. The couple matched on a dating app in 2019, but with Bryant living in South Carolina and Emma in Toronto, and the pandemic hitting soon after, they didn’t meet in person until more than a year later. Beginning their relationship long distance made their December 2024 wedding in Toronto all the more meaningful, with 180 friends and family from both sides of the border adding the icing on the cake.

DOWNTOWN LUXURY: The recently renovated Park Hyatt Toronto set the stage for the couple’s elegant winter reception. White roses and baby’s breath created a modern yet timeless atmosphere, while late-night favourites like chicken tenders, smash burgers and beignets added a playful twist. Instead of a traditional cake, a stunning croquembouche tower served as the sweet centrepiece.
Emma and Bryant debated whether to wait until the ceremony for their first look but ultimately chose to see each other beforehand – a decision they’ll never forget. “Having that private, intimate moment together before the celebrations began was so special.”

GLANCE:
An Italian Dream
It seemed destined that Marie and Marc-Anthony would marry in Italy. Their first trip together was there, they got engaged there, and both of their fathers were born there. So in September 2024, the couple returned to Italy to say “I do” in Puglia, known for its stunning Mediterranean coastline and whitewashed hill towns. Over four days of celebration, the couple was showered with love and well wishes from 80 of their closest friends and family from around the world – including Marie’s 97-year-old grandfather, who travelled all the way from Colombia.
Photography: 515 Photo Co. | Wedding planning: The Knot in Italy | Venue: Masseria Salamina | Flowers: Fiori Di Nadia | Bridal dress: Mira Zwillinger | Hair and makeup: Daniela Farano | Menus: So Pretty in Print
THE PERFECT VENUE: Marie and Marc-Anthony instantly fell in love with Masseria Salamina, a family-run 17th-century castle surrounded by olive groves and farmland. With its picturesque courtyard and ample rooms to host their guests, it offered everything they envisioned for a dream wedding.
TALK OF THE TOWN: The couple’s family and friends are still raving about the Italian feast that was served, which included eggplant parmigiana, branzino, fresh pasta, canapés and an array of decadent cakes and fruits. Marie and Marc-Anthony also had a hand in creating their traditional Italian wedding cake.
WELL WISHES: Marie credits the friendly locals with helping to calm her nerves as she arrived at the church. “There were so many people in the piazza taking photos and wishing me well, which helped put me at ease before walking down the aisle,” she said.
A Decade in the Making
Sometimes love shows up when you least expect it. Back in 2015, 18-year-old Sabrina arrived for her first day of work at Copper Creek Golf Club, not looking for romance. But when 21-year-old Nick, assigned to train her, walked in, sparks flew instantly. A shared love of classic cars, a thrill for speed and the surprising discovery that they lived just four doors apart sealed their fate. Ten years later, their journey came full circle as they celebrated their June 2025 wedding in Elora, Ont., surrounded by family and friends who had watched their story unfold from the very beginning.

JUST US TWO: Before the ceremony, Nick and Sabrina shared 20 quiet minutes together, holding hands, laughing and soaking in the moment. “We kept pinching ourselves that this was finally happening,” they said. During the ceremony, they read the vows they had written for each other, describing it as a raw and beautiful moment that left them equally moved.
THE DRESS: Sabrina chose the Demeter gown in full ivory from the Élysée Atelier collection at Mona Richie Boutique. “Once I had it on, I did not want to take it off,” she said. The fully beaded Chantilly lace mermaid gown, complete with a high slit, exposed boning and a sweeping train, was the vintage-glam dress of her dreams.
THE PERFECT PLACE: For Nick and Sabrina, Elora Mill Hotel & Spa was an easy choice – the couple often rode their motorcycles to Elora for lunch, making the town already meaningful. “When we toured the ceremony, reception and rooftop spaces, we were blown away. It was by far the most gorgeous wedding venue we had ever seen.”
Love in Perfect Harmony
Some venues feel like pure magic, and for Samantha and Marius, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto was exactly that. From the moment they first visited on a crisp November evening, they were captivated by its sweeping views and the airy, elegant space. In August 2024, they exchanged vows in the intimate Mazzoleni Hall, where moody architecture and timeless beauty created a dramatic backdrop for their ceremony. With Samantha’s eye for design shaping the details, their wedding was a romantic and unforgettable celebration that felt both timeless and deeply personal.

TIMELESS BLOOMS: Samantha and Marius envisioned a wedding that was both classic and personal. An all-white floral palette brought timeless elegance, while Samantha’s bouquet of calla lilies paid tribute to her mother, who carried the same blooms on her wedding day.
UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS:
The wedding was the culmination of so many cherished moments, says Samantha – the private intimacy of their first look, the joy of their families, the laughter of friends, and the thrill of seeing every detail they had envisioned come to life.
A PERFECT MATCH: Samantha’s silk Romona Keveza gown made her feel effortlessly elegant the moment she tried it on. Her long-admired lace Zuhair Murad veil completed the bridal look of her dreams.

How to curate the perfect soundtrack to your ceremony
BY REVS. JASON AND MICHAEL, THE MARRY MEN WEDDING OFFICIANTS
As wedding officiants, we have seen and heard it all. When it comes to the music you choose for your ceremony, it should provide more than background ambience – it should resonate with your love story and speak to the depth of devotion and emotion that your wedding day represents. The songs you choose for your processional, recessional and other key moments of the ceremony are the background tracks to the vows you are going to vocalize. That’s why your personal playlist should reflect both your personalities, promises and plans for the future.
THE PROCESSIONAL: AT LAST
The music you choose as the overture to your ceremony will frame the memories of your wedding day forever. Consider a timeless classical piece that speaks to tradition or a contemporary love song that mirrors your relationship. Whether it’s the song that was playing when you first met or a tune you both love to sing along to, personal connections will make the music even more memorable so choose something that is going to hit all the right notes.
GOING SOLO?
Consider giving each key entrance its own distinct and dynamic soundtrack. A unique song can help the groom “get into the groove” and highlight his personality, while a different selection for the wedding party can add some pomp and circumstance. Finally, a bold or sentimental piece for the bride’s entrance will ensure that this breathtaking moment stands apart from all the rest. Thoughtfully curating these musical selections can create an emotional experience that will, as Madonna famously suggests, “make the people come together.”
THE RECESSIONAL: SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED
The music you select for your recessional doesn’t have to be a showstopper, but it should capture your excitement and add a burst of energy as the ceremony
MUSIC TO MAKE YOU FEEL MY LOVE
transitions into a celebration.
Whether it’s a Broadway ballad, a Disney ditty or a timeless classic, make sure the lyrics are meaningful for the moment and reflect the promises you just made. Upbeat pop songs, lively classical pieces or something playful can provide a joyful chorus for the smiles, laughter and applause that will help you “shake, rattle and roll” your way down the aisle as newlyweds.
Many couples like to include music for other personalized moments during the ceremony. Consider a soft acoustic piece to serenade the signing of the marriage license or a favourite melody to underscore a unity ritual or family tradition. The prelude might be serene, the processional reverent, the signing soft and reflective, and the recessional upbeat and joyous. Think of it as an emotional journey that starts from anticipation and culminates in celebration. If you’re hiring live musicians, discuss your vision with them and make sure they’re comfortable with your song choices. If you’re using recorded music, invest in quality sound equipment to ensure every note can be heard.
From the first note of the processional to the last beat of the recessional, every song you select should be a meaningful part of your wedding day. Let the rhythms move you up and down the aisle and let the music tell your story.

It’s Easy To Be GREEN
How to plan a chic and sustainable wedding
BY ALISON MCGILL
Awedding is a beautiful, joyful celebration, but behind the scenes of every big day there’s one detail that may be not so pretty: the environmental impact.
Being kind to our planet and living an eco-conscious life are values that should be embraced every day – most especially on a wedding day, which can come with a ton of waste and a huge carbon footprint. This is something Holly Perrier, principle at Perrier Planning Inc., saw happening firsthand when she started her eco-conscious wedding company in 2019. She made it her mission to help couples create beautiful, stylish celebrations with a focus on sustainability.
“In today’s politically charged climate, values are increasingly influencing personal decisions, including wedding planning,” Perrier says. “Many couples are now prioritizing sustainability, incorporating eco-conscious choices to reflect their concerns about the climate crisis. Traditional wedding norms are being reimagined with thoughtful planning that emphasizes sustainability, from locally sourced flowers to zero-waste catering. As awareness of the climate crisis grows, more couples are making intentional decisions to celebrate love while minimizing their environmental impact.”
Perrier shares when it comes to weddings, there are a few main environmental offenders. The first is toxic materials like petroleum-derived paraffin wax candles,
which emit harmful compounds like toluene and benzene and contribute to indoor air pollution and carbon emissions. Another item high on the toxicity list is floral foam, a non-biodegradable, single-use plastic that breaks down into microplastics and contributes significantly to long-term pollution. And then there’s food waste: uneaten meals end up in landfills producing an excess of methane gas. Weddings can also come with an excessive use of plastics.
“To protect them, many rental décor items arrive wrapped in single-use-plastics,” Perrier reports. “Florals often arrive wrapped in cellophane, which further contributes to the environmental footprint of floral design,” Perrier notes. “Another consideration with florals is that sourcing them from overseas involves extensive air freight, refrigeration and transportation, all of which generate significant carbon emissions. These practices also contribute to deforestation and resource depletion in producing countries.”
Perrier says making your day stylish and sustainable is easy to do; putting a little extra effort into thoughtful and responsible planning can make a significant eco impact.
Be Intentional With Your Guest List
Less people mean less stuff, and a significantly reduced carbon footprint. Intimate weddings continue to trend, with couples loving them not just for the coziness of the gathering but also because they are more sustainable. Perrier says though trimming your guest list can be challenging, she has a suggestion she shares with clients to help determine who should be there on your day. “My rule I always ask my couples to think about is if you could FaceTime that person right now and it wouldn’t feel awkward, they’re probably someone you should invite to your wedding.”
Photography: Hannah Stepaniuk
Choose Natural Materials
Dress your table in luxe layers of linen fabrics. Select sustainable stationery detailed with natural ink dyes. Style wise, go for wedding looks made from fabrics with a lower environmental footprint like ethically sourced organic cotton, silk, hemp, linen and Tencel. You may also want to consider creating bespoke looks with a small-business designer, which guarantees less waste and more customization.
Pick Seasonal Blooms
In Perrier’s opinion, locally sourced and picked florals in their natural season are the only way to go. She suggests looking for flower farms near your venue to give your day a highly personalized, hyper-local vibe. Also work with your floral designer to create multi-purpose arrangements and installations that can be moved and re-imagined from ceremony to reception.
Burn Beeswax Candles
There’s nothing like candlelight to set the stage for a romantic celebration and Perrier says choosing tapered candles made from beeswax is not only a smart aesthetic choice but also an environmentally savvy one. “Beeswax candles burn cleaner and even act as an air purifier.” They also have a longer burn time than paraffin candles, which means they will maintain the magical ambience of your event into the wee hours.
ONE Fine Day
What’s trending now?
From budgets to going big, weddings are never one-sizefits-all. Here, two top event planners talk shop.
BY VIVIAN VASSOS
Quality Over Quantity
We all want to have the ultimate wedding, but for some of us, it may be Champagne taste on a Prosecco budget. Kudos, though, to a couple that recognizes less can still mean more. “Having an affordable wedding can also be considered ‘ultimate,’” says Tammi Foster, the founder of I DO Weddings and Events Okanagan, and a recommended event planner at Watermark Resort in Osoyoos, BC. “You never want to extend what’s in your pocketbook and cause stress after such a happy time. Focus your spending on the things that are most important to you.” Size doesn’t matter but quality does, she adds. “I’ve seen weddings with more than 300 guests where the couple felt
frustrated they didn’t have enough quality time with everyone who came to be part of their big day.”
An ultimate wedding is one that feels deeply personal and true to you as a couple, says Natalie Stanbra, who, as the director, national event sales at Oliver & Bonacini, oversees events at the company’s many restaurants and event spaces, including the newly opened SixtyEight in downtown Toronto. “It’s not about size, it’s about style, intention and experience. Whether you’re hosting an intimate gathering or a grand celebration, what matters most is that the day reflects your love story.” Small weddings can be just as luxurious and elegant as larger ones, she says, and big weddings don’t have to be extravagant to be meaningful. “At the end of the day, the ultimate wedding is one where you and your guests feel joy, connection and celebration.”
Sustainable – and Affordable
“From a decor perspective, I enjoy seeing gently displayed items that are repurposed over and over,” says Foster. “I’ve seen couples rent arbours or resell them, which helps with budget. Keeping things simple is so beautiful. Going minimal with flowers or doing them yourself can also save so much. Your guests act as decor as well. They show up in the most beautiful clothes and take care to look amazing for you. Once they arrive, the room fills with love, laughter and amazing style!”

Stay City Centred
There is an emerging trend planners are seeing in urban weddings, says Stanbra. “We’re noticing a shift toward more intimate, vibe-driven celebrations. Couples are opting for cozy backyard ceremonies, stylish restaurant receptions and smaller guest lists that allow for more personal touches.”
Formal and Casual Dining
With smaller venues, elopements, micro-weddings and other downsizing trends, is a multi-course, sit-down formal dinner still popular? “Definitely,” says Stanbra. “It remains a timeless choice for couples who want a more traditional dining experience.” That said, she adds that she’s also seeing a rise in more casual formats – like cocktail-style receptions with late-night bites. “It’s a relaxed, budget-friendly option that still brings people together in celebration, just with a more laid-back vibe.”
The Low-to-No Movement
Stanbra says she’s also seeing a trend toward low- and noalcohol at weddings. “And we’re here for it! More couples are embracing wellness and inclusivity by offering elevated mocktail menus.” Guests, she notes, love having thoughtfully crafted non-alcoholic options that are just as delicious and creative as their spirited counterparts. “It’s a refreshing trend that proves you don’t need alcohol to have a memorable, stylish celebration.”
Get the Look
It’s all about creating a unique atmosphere that feels effortless and elevated. Some standout style trends Stanbra is loving right now include:
• Serpentine table setups for a dramatic, flowing aesthetic
• Delicate florals paired with fruit centrepieces for an organic, vibrant feel
• Mismatched bridesmaid dresses that reflect each one’s personal style
• Oversized dessert displays as a playful alternative to traditional wedding cakes

From warm, amber florals to citrus-inspired beauty looks, the signature orange shade at the heart of Taylor Swift’s latest album is setting the tone for this season’s wedding trends
BY LUCY MAZZUCCO
Enter the Orange Era
With the colour orange stealing the spotlight, various experts have agreed that this season’s bridal trends will be anything but muted. Between makeup and bridesmaid dresses to tablescapes and décor, many couples are passing on traditional pastels and opting
for a bold pop of colour inspired by “Portofino Orange Glitter,” the aesthetic of Taylor Swift’s album The Life of a Showgirl Sydney Stanback, global trends and insights lead for Pinterest, says that since the announcement of the album, searches for “Taylor Swift orange” have surged. “This momentum is carrying into weddings, with searches for ‘orange wedding’ up by 115 per cent. ‘Orange wedding dresses’ and ‘orange wedding guest dresses’ have also increased,” she says, noting that more couples are leaning into the bold, celebratory shade. “Searches for ‘orange wedding cakes’ and ‘orange wedding flowers’ are also on the rise, as is ‘orange glitter’ – inspiring sparkling tablescapes, statement cakes and festive invitations.”
Décor Dreams
From bouquets with vibrant orange blossoms to finer details such as glittery menus, vision boards are already sparking creative ideas among venue professionals as this iconic shade makes its way into the decorative elements found in wedding receptions. “We find that fall weddings are naturally drawn to those oranges and warm tones in florals and tablescapes, as they reflect the changing foliage and general seasonal colours,” says Sonia Borkar, director of events and roundhouse operations at Steam Whistle Brewing. “Draping, florals, tablescapes, dancefloor vinyl, seating charts, lounge furniture, photobooths and dessert buffets can all be on theme. We could even do an edible orange glitter signature cocktail or orange glitter menus shaped like a vinyl record at each place setting to really lean into the vibe.”
Fashion Forward
From a style angle, grooms, too, are adding juicy accents with ties and pocket squares. Fashion designer Joseph Tassoni also says there’s been more excitement around glitter, playful textures and bold colour palettes. “For our 2026 presentation, we showcased rich orange tones in our actual fabrics made of sustainable fibres that reacted beautifully to the different shades of light. It brought warmth, energy and sophistication to our show, which filters through everywhere,” he says, noting that he has noticed more brides shifting towards orange shades. “The shift to orange makes things a little bit more personal, as it is less seen throughout all of the seasons.”
Mandarin Magic
Maria Molchanova, NARS Cosmetics Canada communications manager, has also noticed an emerging trend in orange makeup, which she says has likely been influenced by Showgirl “Orange makeup is having a moment and already gaining virality. We recently saw that with the NARS Morocco lipstick selling out when Swift’s makeup artist confirmed it as the shade she’s been wearing,” says Molchanova.
RING MASTER
“For
bold brides who want to bring a glittery orange into their bridal manicure, there are several creative options”
Erica Nieuwenhuis, CEO of Bio Sculpture Canada, says that since the announcement of the album, she has seen more requests for orange nails. “It’s especially popular among true Swifties,” she says.
“For bold brides who want to bring a glittery orange into their bridal manicure, there are several creative options. A chrome powder with an orange shift adds subtle shimmer, while floral nail art accented with orange makes for a meaningful detail. Orange glitter can also be incorporated through an ombré design or a French tip for a striking, yet elegant effect.” Nieuwenhuis says she also anticipates seeing orange nails appear in other bridal-adjacent moments, such as themed bridal showers, bachelorette parties or even European summer honeymoons, where brides and their parties can feel free to embrace a bolder, more playful colour story.
Chau Lui, co-founder of the Canadian jewellery brand CELI in Toronto and co-owner of Paris Jewellers Canada, and Dana Smith, a trained goldsmith and gemmologist, of Dana’s Goldsmithing in Port Perry, Ontario, give us their takes on Taylor Swift’s engagement ring
BY VIVIAN VASSOS
What’s your first impression of Taylor’s engagement ring?
Chau Lui: I think it suits her so perfectly, her style, her vibe – everything! The ring is a stunning glamourous statement piece with an heirloom quality to the design.
Dana Smith: We love the ring with its vintage flair, heavier band and custom aspects.
reimagined – designed in a way that feels classic and modern. We actually started seeing the Old Mine diamond trend building over the past year.
The elongated old mine cut is a unique choice. The shape itself is trending, as we’re seeing many elongated radiant and cushion cuts. The old mine cut is a perfect focal point to the ring’s other vintage
Does size really matter?
Size matters only to the person wearing it. What matters most is how it makes you feel, and that you love the ring everytime
Every diamond is unique just as every bride is. The sheer size of Taylor’s diamond is impressive, and consumers are tending to go larger with the option of laboratory grown diamonds if natural diamonds are out of their budget. We prefer to focus on the uniqueness of each design and the diamond that’s best suited for each bride, just as Taylor’s ring is for her.
Any guesses on what Taylor’s wedding band might look like?
CL: I could envision a secondary band similar to the first but with rubies instead of diamonds, as she loves rubies and wears them often.

How this low-key Canadian couple ensured their big day in France was everything they dreamed of – elegant, simple, casually formal and utterly magical
BY VIVIAN VASSOS
olin and Jason travelled from Halifax to the enchanting town of Mouriès de Provence in the south of France for their wedding day. They invited 21 of their dearest family members and friends to share this special moment – and a private villa. “As two fairly casual guys, we didn’t need an entire day to prepare, so we took our time, laughing, chatting and savouring glasses of exquisite French wine,” says Colin, of the relaxed atmosphere. Here’s what kept them calm and carrying on.
1. Take a Quiet Moment Before Forever
“Just before the ceremony, we stood together on the villa’s terrace, looking out at our guests seated below,” says Colin. “The sun was shining, and we were surrounded by lush trees, vibrant gardens and timeless historic architecture. It was a moment suspended in perfection – just the two of us, sharing an intimate pause before stepping out of our relationship and into our marriage.” Walking down the aisle together made the day all the more meaningful, and this quiet instant beforehand will forever be etched in the couple’s hearts.
2. A Touch of Love Passed Around
Unbeknownst to Colin or Jason, the family member officiating the ceremony included a heartfelt and symbolic gesture. Before presenting the wedding rings, the officiant passed them among the guests, allowing each person to imbue them with their love and well wishes. It was a deeply moving surprise that added an extra layer of connection and meaning to the moment the couple exchanged their vows.
3. The Dinner: Make it a Culinary Dream
The villa’s Michelin-starred chef created a meal that was nothing short of perfection. The whole party gathered around a grand table in the villa’s dining room “where we celebrated, laughed and listened to heartfelt words from family and friends. It was the perfect trifecta: exquisite food, fine wine and the most incredible company,” says Colin. The evening was a true testament to love, joy and togetherness.
Photography: Loick Senant
4. Choose a Location and Picture-Perfect Venue
The wedding venue set the stage. This elegant 18thcentury farmhouse, featuring 10 bedrooms and nine bathrooms, lies near the charming villages of SaintRémy-de-Provence and Maussane. With its refined interiors and picturesque surroundings, the villa offered both luxury and tranquility. It is located just 25 minutes from Arles and less than 45 minutes from Avignon, Aixen-Provence and the Marseille airport. This made it the perfect base for both peaceful retreats and exploring the French countryside and vibrant culture of Provence.
5. Send an Elegant and Playful Invitation
“With only 10 invitations to send, we saw an opportunity to create something truly memorable,” says Colin. Each invitation arrived in a beautifully packaged 10 x 10 box wrapped in custom-designed paper. Inside, guests discovered a cream cardstock invitation with gold embellishments, an itinerary outlining the week’s events in the south of France and a map highlighting the villa’s location and nearby attractions. “The highlight, however, was a retro viewfinder featuring images of the villa, giving our guests their first glimpse of the stunning property where they’d be staying,” he adds. This unique and playful touch set the tone for the excitement and adventure to come.
6. Handmade Boutonnieres
The boutonnieres were handcrafted by one of the grooms, using fresh flowers picked from the villa’s grounds. This personal touch brought a creative and meaningful element to the wedding. Adding to the sentiment, the grooms’ nephews joined in to help make the boutonnieres, turning the task into a heartwarming family activity and making these small floral accents even more special
Gut Guide
While champagne and celebratory snacks may be tempting in the weeks leading up to the big day, nourishing the body with proper fuel can help brides and grooms feel their best
BY LUCY MAZZUCCO
ith wedding prep comes stress, and stress often leads to snacking. While it’s important to be kind to your body and respond to hunger cues, being strategic with snacks that will both nourish and satisfy is key for brides and grooms looking to avoid that bloated feeling. “The most common causes of bloating are stress, lack of sleep, excess sodium, carbonated drinks and processed foods. Even healthy options like beans or raw cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower and kale can cause extra gas if you increase the amount you eat,” says
“The most common causes of bloating are stress, lack of sleep, excess sodium, carbonated drinks and processed foods”
Lisa Mastracchio, certified nutrition coach and owner of the Coach Lisa online training platform. “In the weeks leading up to your wedding, stick to meals you know your body tolerates well and avoid experimenting with big diet changes as the day approaches.”
HEALTHY HABITS
According to Mastracchio, it’s best to start eating clean two to three months before the wedding to give bodies time to adjust and settle into a routine. “This way, you’ll know what foods and supplements work best for you without last-minute surprises. Think of it as training your body to feel its absolute best during your wedding week,” she says. When it comes to choosing foods that help prevent bloating, Mastracchio says protein is key because it stabilizes blood sugar, reduces cravings and helps maintain a lean, toned look. “It also digests more steadily than a carb-heavy meal, so you won’t feel sluggish or puffy afterward. Aim for 25 to 30 grams of protein at each meal to keep your energy high and appetite balanced,” she says.
Mastracchio notes that fibre is fantastic for digestion because it naturally holds water and helps the gut stay balanced and comfortable. “Greens are a great source of both fibre and hydration, plus they give you a boost of vitamins and minerals. Lightly cooking them makes them easier to digest. Keep in mind, however, if you’re not used to a lot of fibre, introduce it gradually so your body feels its best leading up to the wedding,” she says. Mastracchio recommends lean protein sources such as chicken breast and fish, low-fat lactose-free plain Greek yogurt, vegetables such as
zucchini and cucumber, rice, sweet potatoes and cooked greens, which she says are all gentle on digestion. “Foods to limit are carbonated drinks, salty processed snacks, alcohol, fried foods and large portions of raw cruciferous vegetables. Keeping meals simple and whole-food based will help you feel light, energized and wedding-day ready,” she says.
“Spread your intake throughout the day to stay refreshed without feeling overly full”
WELLNESS BOOST
In terms of supplements, Mastracchio says a quality probiotic can help balance gut bacteria, which supports digestion and reduces gas. “Magnesium is great for regularity, and digestive enzymes can help if you find certain foods tough to break down,” she says.
“Start these several weeks ahead so you know how your body responds before the big day.” For brides and grooms who are trying to drink more water, Mastracchio says a simple guideline is drinking about half one’s body weight in ounces of water each day. “Staying hydrated helps flush out excess sodium, which causes bloating,” she says. “Spread your intake throughout the day to stay refreshed without feeling overly full.”
FITNESS FIX
When it comes to developing an exercise routine, Mastracchio recommends starting eight to 12 weeks before the big day. “Consider working with a trainer to fast-track results. They can ensure proper form, keep you safe and provide a structured program tailored to your pre-wedding goals,” she says. She also notes that walking is great for digestion and can help reduce bloating.
While starting an exercise routine several weeks in advance can be a great way to prevent bloating, certain factors such as stress or lack of sleep can cause it regardless. For brides and grooms who wake up feeling bloated on their wedding day, Mastracchio suggests keeping their first meal light and familiar, taking a short walk to stimulate digestion and help calm nerves and sipping on peppermint or ginger tea. “Stress and poor sleep disrupt digestion and often trigger bloating. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep so you wake up rested, refreshed and glowing,” she says. “Avoid carbonated drinks, gum or anything new to your system that morning. These simple steps will help you feel more comfortable and confident.”

Tea & Tradition
There’s something special about seeing tradition and modern love stories come together, says Tracey Manailescu, co-founder and vice president of The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada Inc., and the designer behind this editorial shoot at The Ritz-Carlton Toronto. “It was a heartfelt tribute to Chinese wedding customs with a stylish, modern twist,” she says. “We started with the traditional Chinese tea ceremony. Every part of it symbolizes deep respect, love and the union of two families.” The bride wore a gorgeous Cheongsam in the most vibrant, lucky red. For the Western ceremony, the team played with a warm and romantic colour palette: blush pinks, gold accents and rich pops of red that brought a festive, joyful vibe to the space. The groom wore custom cufflinks featuring the double happiness symbol, which was such a thoughtful nod to Chinese culture. The reception design made the most of the space’s floor-to-ceiling windows showing off Toronto’s skyline, with tables overflowing with lush florals and gold flatware that reflected the candlelight. The cake was a showstopper: three tiers with gold fortune cookies that elegantly tied the theme together.

Mellow Yellow
“We created this romantic and playful styled shoot to inspire brides to embrace Butter Yellow, the colour of the year for weddings,” says photographer Eunice Kwok. “We paired it with a baby blue that adds sophistication and chose a classical venue full of stained glass and traditional architecture, creating the perfect setting for a microwedding of up to 50 guests.” The menu, courtesy of Hawksworth Restaurant in Vancouver, was a three-course affair: beet and goat cheese salad, salmon with orange miso sauce and buckwheat carrot cake. Three signature cocktails complemented the overall vibe: Hotel Georgia, Passionate from Miles Away and Through the Grapevine. Florals of roses and hydrangeas adorned tables alongside lemons and pears. “Including fruit is a great way to add some personality to your tablescape, and totally doable for a DIY couple,” says Kwok. The cake featured hand-painted motifs to match the florals. The bride wore Novelle Bridal, with oversized sleeves and a unique floral design on the fabric, making it both regal and whimsical, as well as a party dress to dance the night away.

Poppies & Peonies
The concept for this styled shoot is based on colour and romance, built around a lush palette of poppies and peonies, says Alanna at Timeless Event Services. Photographed at the stunning Barn Swallow Fields, just an hour northwest of Toronto, this editorial makes the most of the venue. Only a couple of years old, it offers a beautiful blend of charm and elegance, making it the perfect canvas for this unique shoot. The bride’s fashion-forward gown features whimsical puff tulle sleeves that perfectly echo the vintage character of the space, adding a distinctive twist to the overall aesthetic.

A Novel Idea
“Your big day doesn’t need to come at a cost to the planet. The choices you make matter and can go a long way in ensuring you’re starting the next chapter sustainably,” says Melany Redman, venues assistant at the Kitchener Public Library, the location for this sustainable-inspired shoot. Digital invites instead of paper, a vintage dress, donations instead of favours are all little ways to minimize waste, says Redman. “Imagine getting married at a venue that values sustainability as much as you do.” She suggests looking for an energy-efficient building, such as the Southwest Library in Kitchener, Ont. “It is one of the first public libraries with a Net-Zero designation in Canada.” Design inspiration flows from the natural elements in the space. Tall ceilings drench the Sunroom with natural light. Clean crisp edges add a modern touch to the wood and greenery all around. The space is crowned with a warming Indigenous art installation that will surely inspire conversations among guests of all ages. “The library is a stunning backdrop to your love story, and it does all this while secretly ensuring your wedding day is eco-friendly and environmentally responsible," adds Redman.
Light Bright
Inspired by the joy of spring, this photo shoot at Tapestry Hall in Cambridge, Ont., was designed to show couples how to brighten the space with colour, says photographer Wendy Alana. The creative team wanted to reimagine traditional wedding palettes, swapping muted tones for bold, painterly blooms and unexpected colour pairings. Layers of texture, from rattan chairs to sculptural florals and soft candlelight, brought warmth and depth to the industrial backdrop. The result is a celebration of contrast: refined yet fun, elevated yet approachable, romantic yet joyfully unexpected.

THE MOST FABULOUS DESTINATION WEDDING TRENDS COME COURTESY OF SOCIAL MEDIA
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO
Social media has evolved into a hub of inspiration for nearly every moment in life –including weddings. More couples are turning to their favourite platforms for destination wedding ideas that are fresh, fun and endlessly shareable. From trending décor to musthave photo moments, here are the looks and ideas taking over your feed.
FIND YOUR MATCH!
SHOTS & SEATS
Getting hitched in Mexico? Kick off the celebration with a spirited twist on the classic seating chart. Set up a display of tequila shots, each glass tagged with a guest’s name and table number. This festive setup that we found on Instagram is a fun nod to local culture and guarantees plenty of laughs as everyone finds their seat. It’s a built-in icebreaker that sets the tone for a lively, unforgettable night.
Everyone loves a good party game, and this one – first seen on TikTok – is as sentimental as it is fun. Print two copies of photos from milestones in your relationship – your first date, your first trip, moving in together – and place one at each guest’s seat. Guests must mingle to find the matching photo, and the first pair to succeed earns the honour of giving a toast to the newlyweds. It’s a charming way to get everyone talking and laughing, especially at a smaller, more intimate destination wedding.
FLIP FLOP STATION
Beach weddings call for easy, breezy style – and that includes footwear. As seen on Instagram, set up a flip flop station for your guests by filling a basket with colourful pairs and place it on an outdoor rug or beach blanket with a sign inviting everyone to take one. Add a personal touch by customizing the flip flops with your names and wedding date or choose colours that match your theme. Bonus: they make
trend adds a nostalgic twist to the traditional guestbook. Instead of signing a standard keepsake, invite guests to jot down their messages in your old high school yearbooks. Whether you met in the halls or years later, this retro-inspired idea – spotted on TikTok –is sure to spark memories and laughter. Keep the theme going with prom-inspired décor, a punch bowl and even a “prom king and queen” first dance.
SURPRISE RING BEARER
We spotted this trend on Instagram and instantly loved it! Instead of having a traditional ring bearer, tape the rings to the underside of one guest’s chair before the ceremony. When it’s time to exchange rings, invite everyone to check under their seats. The lucky guest who finds them gets to deliver the rings to the couple at the altar, becoming the surprise ring bearer. It’s a lighthearted way to add laughter to the moment and make guests feel part of your celebration.

LGBTQ+ COUPLES ARE TYING THE KNOT IN THE WORLD’S MOST WELCOMING DESTINATIONS
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO
ove knows no borders – and increasingly, neither do weddings. For many LGBTQ+ couples, a destination wedding isn’t just about the view – it’s about freedom and the joy of celebrating without hesitation, surrounded by the people who matter most, in a place that welcomes every kind of love. From beachside vows in Mexico to rainforest rituals in Costa Rica, these love-filled weddings are proving that romance shines brightest where it’s free to be itself.
A GROWING WAVE OF WANDERLUST
John Hawks, Executive Director of the Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association (DWHSA) is seeing steady demand for destination weddings among LGBTQ+ couples for 2026 and even 2027, saying the uptick reflects both a love of travel and a desire for more meaningful, inclusive experiences.
“Compared to other couples, they’re generally more experienced travellers and they want to get away and spend time with friends and close family on these trips,”
says Hawks. “Plus, there’s so much flexibility with the ceremonies – they can go very informal or dress things up as they wish.”
LOCATION IS EVERYTHING
Mexico continues to top the list for LGBTQ+ destination weddings, especially Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, along with the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Puerto Rico, says Hawks. These destinations are convenient, affordable and home to an array of resorts that welcome same-sex couples. “As LGBTQ+ travel has become more mainstream, destination wedding couples find it’s easier for their guests to get to and from these destinations,” says Hawks.
For couples dreaming of a European flair on their wedding day, Malta continues to lead the way in inclusivity. According to A3M’s 2025 Risk Map, the Mediterranean archipelago ranked as the world’s safest destination for LGBTQ+ travellers for the tenth consecutive year. Located between Sicily and the North African coast, Malta legalized same-sex marriage in 2017 and reports minimal hate crime, with inclusive hotels
that make every guest feel welcome. Rounding out the top five safest destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers are Iceland, the Netherlands, Canada and Spain.
THE RIGHT RESORTS
A welcoming resort can make or break the destination wedding experience. Hyatt Inclusive Collection, Hilton All-Inclusive and Iberostar properties rank among the most LGBTQ+ friendly, says Hawks, with inclusive ceremony packages, experienced coordinators and staff trained to serve diverse couples with respect and care.
“It’s critical to get a definitive answer on whether a property truly welcomes openly LGBTQ+ visitors,” Hawks emphasizes. “In 2026 and beyond, there are simply too many welcoming resorts out there to get stuck on a property that’s lukewarm about hosting you for your wedding.”
Amber Lynn Hernandez, owner of Enchanted Vacation Travel in Texas and a DWHSA member, recommends Hyatt Ziva, Hyatt Zilara and RIU properties to her LGBTQ+ clients. She also notes that couples should be asking their travel advisors the right questions prior to booking their destination wedding. “Has the advisor planned a destination wedding before? Are they certified in destination wedding planning? Which safe destinations would you recommend? Asking the right questions will help couples find an advisor who understands their vision, respects their needs and can guide them to destinations and resorts that truly celebrate love in all its forms.”
DWHSA now offers two certifications that help couples identify qualified specialists: the Certified LGBTQ Romance Travel Specialist (in partnership with the Equality Institute) and the Certified Destination Wedding Ceremony Planner. DWHSA currently has 850 travel advisor members, including 80 based in Canada. For more details, go to dwhsa.com
“I DO” Ask before you say
16 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR RESORT’S DESTINATION WEDDING PLANNING EXPERT
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO
lanning a destination wedding is thrilling, but it can also feel overwhelming. From coordinating travel to ensuring every detail of your ceremony is flawless, there’s a lot to consider. That’s why speaking with a resort’s in-destination wedding expert is essential. We sat down with Isabel Flota, Weddings Sales and Operations Manager at Playa Hotels & Resorts, to find out the top questions couples should ask when booking their dream wedding abroad.
1. HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK? Destination weddings require careful planning because there are many moving parts, including travel, accommodations and guest logistics. The sooner you book, the more options and flexibility you will have. Flota advises, “Booking early gives you plenty of time to plan every detail, send invitations and allow your guests to arrange travel and accommodations. Destination weddings require coordination for everyone
attending, so advance planning is key.” Booking early also increases your options for venues and dates, helping you create the celebration you’ve been dreaming of.
2. WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE WEDDING PACKAGE? Every resort handles wedding packages differently, so it’s important to understand exactly what is included before booking. Packages can range from simple ceremonies for two to full celebrations with guests, receptions and entertainment. Flota explains, “Our packages range from simple,
intimate ceremonies for just the couple to full celebrations with guests, cocktail hours, receptions, live musicians and DJs.” Couples can select a package that matches their vision, whether it’s a small, romantic gathering or a grand celebration with every detail planned.
3. WHERE WILL THE CEREMONY AND RECEPTION BE HELD? The venue sets the mood for your wedding day, so ask about all the available options. Outdoor spaces, rooftop terraces and ballrooms all offer different vibes and logistics. Flota shares, “Our resorts offer a variety of stunning locations. Couples can choose beach ceremonies with ocean breezes, romantic gazebos, rooftop terraces with panoramic views or lush garden lawns. Indoor ballrooms are also available as a classic option or backup.” Your wedding coordinator will guide you to a space that reflects your personality and complements your desired aesthetic.
4.
WHAT HAPPENS IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER? Weather can be unpredictable, especially in tropical destinations, so always ask how your resort manages contingencies. Flota says, “While we hope for sunshine, we plan for every scenario. For each outdoor venue, we reserve a beautiful indoor backup space.” Coordinators consider timing, setup logistics and guest comfort to ensure the day remains magical, rain or shine.

5. CAN WE PERSONALIZE OUR PACKAGE? Your wedding should reflect you as a couple, so check how much flexibility there is to customize your celebration. Flota notes, “Every couple is unique, and so are our weddings. You can choose your favourite colours, décor themes, floral styles and special enhancements to make your celebration one-of-a-kind.” While packages themselves aren’t swapped, Playa’s on-site team helps couples tailor upgrades such as lighting, live entertainment or luxury details.
6. HOW MANY WEDDINGS HAPPEN PER DAY? Privacy and attention can make a big difference in your experience. Knowing whether multiple weddings occur at the same time helps you set expectations. Flota explains, “We usually host one wedding per day to ensure each couple receives full attention. Occasionally, multiple weddings may be scheduled, but we carefully plan timing and locations so every celebration feels private and special.”
7. IS THERE A MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM NUMBER OF GUESTS REQUIRED? Guest lists can vary greatly, from elopements to large family affairs. “We welcome weddings of all sizes – from intimate elopements with just the two of you to grand celebrations with hundreds of guests,” says Flota. “There’s no required minimum or maximum; however, each resort’s indoor backup space determines the true capacity limit.” She adds that confirming your guest count early helps ensure every detail – from venue setup to catering – runs seamlessly.
8. DO YOU OFFER SPECIAL GROUP RATES OR PERKS FOR GUESTS STAYING AT THE RESORT? Many destination wedding resorts offer attractive incentives for booking multiple rooms. Flota says it’s a win-win for everyone involved: “We offer special group rates and encourage couples to secure a room block to guarantee availability for their loved ones. Group bookings often come with perks such as complimentary nights that couples can use for themselves or assign to special guests.”
9. ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS FOR THE CEREMONY OR RECEPTION? Every destination has its own event guidelines, which can vary by venue. “Each resort follows specific rules related to setup, music curfews and timing,” Flota notes. “Outdoor events may have sound restrictions, especially during turtle nesting season. Our in-house vendors know the logistics and regulations, ensuring everything runs smoothly from start to finish.”
10. DOES THE RESORT ASSIST WITH LEGAL PAPERWORK AND LICENCES? Legal requirements differ by country, but couples won’t have to navigate them alone. “Our on-site wedding team will guide you through all the legal requirements needed for your ceremony,” Flota says. “Some documents may need to be notarized or translated, but we’ll connect you with the right local resources and make sure the process stays stress-free.”
11. WHO WILL OFFICIATE THE CEREMONY? Resorts typically provide flexibility when it comes to officiants. “Our wedding packages include a nondenominational officiant for symbolic ceremonies, while legal weddings are performed by a local judge,” Flota explains. “Some couples even have a friend or family member officiate – we’ll help with logistics to make it personal and meaningful.”
12. WILL AN ON-SITE COORDINATOR BE THERE ON THE DAY? Having a dedicated coordinator ensures everything runs smoothly from start to finish. “From the moment you book, you’ll be connected with your on-site coordinator, who will guide you every step of the way,” says Flota. That same coordinator will be present on your wedding day and can also assist with pre- and post-wedding activities. “For excursions, we partner with trusted local DMCs who take great care of wedding groups, all in coordination with your on-site team.”
13.CAN WE DO A WEDDING REHEARSAL BEFORE THE WEDDING DAY? “Yes, absolutely!” Flota says, noting that a rehearsal helps everyone feel confident and organized. “Your on-site coordinator can arrange a
walk-through to practise the ceremony flow and key moments. Just book it in advance to secure the space – it’s a fun way to review details and start the celebrations early.”
14. DO YOU OFFER A SITE VISIT BEFORE THE WEDDING? Seeing the venue firsthand (or virtually) can help couples visualize their big day. Playa Hotels & Resorts has a Big Day Preview program that includes a two-night stay at a special rate so couples can meet the team and explore venues. “If you book afterward, we’ll credit the room rate toward your wedding. We also offer discounted planning visits and virtual tours for those unable to travel,” says Flota.
15. DO YOU HAVE A PREFERRED LIST OF VENDORS, OR CAN WE BRING OUR OWN?
Many resorts partner with trusted local vendors but remain open to custom choices. Flota notes that Playa collaborates with preferred vendors who know the properties well to ensure flawless service. “If you’d like to bring your own vendors, such as a photographer or DJ, just let your coordinator know in advance. Outside vendors may require a site visit and are subject to fees, but we’ll coordinate everything for a smooth experience.”
16. DO YOU OFFER HONEYMOON UPGRADES OR PACKAGES? For couples looking to extend the romance beyond the big day, many resorts offer special touches. “We love celebrating every chapter of your love story,” says Flota. “Honeymoon and anniversary guests receive romantic in-room amenities, while vow renewals can be booked using our wedding packages. Some premium options even include a complimentary anniversary night when you book four nights.”
Nature Meets ROMANCE
A NEW WEDDING INSPIRATION FROM SANDALS AND BEACHES LETS COUPLES TIE THE KNOT IN STYLE WHILE HONOURING
THE ISLANDS THEY LOVE
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO
andals Resorts and Beaches Resorts are helping couples plan weddings that are as stylish as they are sustainable. For 2026 and beyond, the Caribbean brands have unveiled Nature’s Vow, a new wedding inspiration that blends eco-conscious design with the effortless elegance of the islands.
“With Nature’s Vow, we’re not only giving couples a stunning new design inspiration but also a way to celebrate responsibly – in harmony with the islands we call home,” said Marsha-Ann Donaldson, Director of Weddings and Romance at Sandals Resorts. “Our guests are increasingly seeking meaning behind every moment of their celebration, and Nature’s Vow delivers just that.”
ECO-INSPIRED DESIGN
Nature’s Vow draws its inspiration from the Caribbean’s lush landscapes, incorporating earthy tones, natural textures and locally sourced accents. Couples can exchange vows amid greenery-filled arches, bamboo details and eco-forward florals, while potted plants offer a sustainable touch that can be reused for future celebrations. Plant selections vary by resort, with Turks and Caicos featuring Areca and Kentia palms, banana plants, monstera, bird of paradise, philodendron and dracaena, providing a tropical backdrop for memorable ceremonies.
The inspiration joins Sandals’ existing collection, which also includes Jamaican Tropical Hues, celebrating bold island culture, and Azure Tides, reflecting the calm beauty of the Caribbean Sea.
WEDDINGS WITH PURPOSE
Nature’s Vow aligns with Sandals’ broader environmental initiatives through the Sandals Foundation. Couples can incorporate meaningful, eco-conscious touches into their celebrations, such as symbolic tree planting ceremonies in Jamaica and Turks and Caicos that support reforestation projects. Locally made gifts from the Caribbean Artisan Collection can be included in welcome packages, and wedding garments can be donated to support food programs and shelters for women and children. Leftover reception food is repurposed into organic fertilizer for resort gardens and nearby farms, while Island Routes excursions allow couples to take part in turtle releases or guided cycling tours.
A SPECIAL OFFER FOR COUPLES
To mark the debut of Nature’s Vow, Sandals and Beaches Resorts are offering a complimentary Sweetheart Wedding package for couples who book a minimum of seven nights in a Club or Butler Suite. The package covers a ceremony for up to 10 guests, décor, a dinner party, wedding cake, pre-arrival planning support and a US$200 credit towards photography and videography. For couples seeking a celebration that honours both their love and the environment, Sandals’ Nature’s Vow offers an unforgettable way to say “I do” in the Caribbean.

Put Your STAMP ON IT!
HOW TO ADD A PUNCH OF PERSONALITY TO A DESTINATION WEDDING PACKAGE
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO
Booking a wedding package at a hotel or resort comes with plenty of perks. It’s convenient, cost-effective and takes the stress out of planning by covering most of the essentials. But while packages simplify the process, they can sometimes lack those personal touches that make your celebration truly yours. Add some flair and individuality to your big day with these creative ideas that bring your love story to life.
BOUQUETS & BOUTONNIERES
Most basic wedding packages include a bouquet for the bride and a boutonniere for the groom. While lovely, they can sometimes feel a bit generic. Fortunately, it’s easy to add personal touches that make these floral details truly your own – without needing extra luggage space. Consider pinning a family heirloom, like your grandmother’s brooch or your father’s cufflinks, to the bouquet. For the boutonniere, incorporate small items that reflect your shared story, such as a fishing lure, a golf tee or the key to your first apartment. You could also craft fabric flowers together, wrap both
pieces with ribbon from a loved one’s garment, or fold origami blooms using paper from old love letters for a sentimental, handmade touch.
WEDDING CAKE
No celebration feels complete without a wedding cake, which most resort packages include as a standard one-, two- or three-tier creation. While hotels and resorts may have limited flexibility when it comes to flavours and decorations, there are plenty of ways to make it your own. Add a touch of personality with a custom cake topper, like a miniature of your pet, or surround the cake with your favourite candies and chocolates. You can also drape the table with antique linens or handkerchiefs for a vintage look, or top the cake with fresh flowers you picked together that morning for a simple, romantic finish.
MUSIC
This is where you can really let your personalities shine! Most wedding packages can be upgraded to include a DJ or live music. Come prepared with a list of must-play
hits to get everyone on the dance floor. You can leave request sheets on each table, letting friends and family help shape the night’s playlist. Consider a musical theme, such as songs from the years you were born, or kick things off with a game of musical chairs to break the ice. An open-mic hour can also add a fun twist, giving guests the chance to serenade you with love songs. Whatever you choose, make sure the music keeps the energy high and the dance floor jumpin’ all night long!
DRINKS
A toast to the happy couple is a wedding staple, whether you’re celebrating at a five-star resort or a villa in Italy. Give it a personal twist with a signature cocktail inspired by your first date, your wedding colours, or even named after your pet or couple nickname. Dress up each glass with custom charms that reflect your shared interests – like a pickleball paddle, wine bottle or suitcase – or add acrylic drink tags or stir sticks featuring your initials. Serving wine? Create custom bottle labels with your names and wedding date, or add a touch of humour with coasters illustrated with your caricatures
Destination Weddings,
START YOUR NEW LIFE TOGETHER ON A LITERAL HIGH BY OPTING FOR A CELEBRATION IN ONE OF THESE STUNNING MOUNTAINOUS LOCATIONS
BY JEN O’BRIEN
f life is a journey, your wedding day is undoubtedly one of its peaks – so what better place to celebrate than on top of the world, literally! With crisp fresh air, tranquil natural surroundings and jaw-dropping views, mountain destinations are the pinnacle of romance, not to mention the best places to capture gorgeous atmospheric wedding photography. These destinations are also rising in popularity. A recent report from Pinterest noted a marked uptick in searches for so-called “elevacation” inspiration.
Though they may require a bit more effort to access than your average all-inclusive beach destination wedding location, mountaintop venues are ideal for adventurous couples who prefer outdoorsy activities over umbrella drinks – as well as those who want to keep the guest list intimate.
If the mountains are calling for your big day, we’ve scouted some of the most stunning spots around the globe to host the celebration of a lifetime.
Dreamy Dolomites
There is something almost otherworldly about the sharp, jagged peaks of this mountain range in northeastern Italy. Among the highest limestone walls in the world, the area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site drawing thrill-seeking skiers in winter and avid cyclers, hikers and paragliders in summer. Picture serene forests, crystalclear waters, dramatic, charming alpine villages with unique Italian flair and sunsets that cast a magical pink alpenglow on the summits.
Surreal scenery aside, marrying in this part of the world means you’ll have access to wonderful farm-to-table fare, luxurious accommodations and a tranquil atmosphere that will completely squash any pre-wedding jitters.
For a marvelous micro-wedding in the area check out Forestis, a spa hotel outside the historic town of Brixen and roughly two hours from Verona boasting a secluded location at an altitude of 1,800 metres. The property’s exclusive five-bedroom villa provides the perfect venue for an intimate celebration. With a private chef, 24-hour concierge and bespoke amenities including a cinema, wine cellar, outdoor dining area and indoor-outdoor pool, it’s the embodiment of quiet luxury.
Riveting Rockies
Among our most revered national treasures, the Canadian Rockies, with their steep slopes and jagged peaks, make a beautiful backdrop for a destination wedding closer to home.
Head to Canmore for a celebration that combines breathtaking views and laid-back vibes. Set in the Bow Valley along the eastern slopes of the Rockies, Canmore is just over an hour west of Calgary and revered for its small-town charm and vast surrounding wilderness.
Say your I-dos with unobstructed mountain views during an outdoor ceremony at The Canmore Ranch followed by a rustic-chic reception at The Cornerstone Theatre with its barnwood interior and cathedral ceilings. Nearby, the Malcolm Hotel offers upscale accommodations and unrivalled views of the Three Sisters mountain range and Mount Lawrence Grassi.
Don’t be surprised if guests want to extend their stays in the area to explore the hiking trails, embark on rafting, e-bike, food and brewery tours or hit the slopes in nearby Banff.
Stunning Swiss Alps
Few countries are as scenic as Switzerland. With its rolling green hills, sparkling lakes and, of course, its iconic peaks, it’s an adventure-lover’s paradise equally renowned for its world-class chocolate, cheese and precision – a characteristic that will be especially handy while planning your wedding from afar.
For some of the best Swiss hospitality and views opt for a wedding in Interlaken, just over two hours by train from Zurich. Nestled between two turquoise lakes and set against the snow-capped Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks, guests will delight in exploring the area via hiking trails, lake cruises and cable cars.
In the heart of Interlaken, the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa is the ideal venue for an opulent fairytale wedding with its elegant ballrooms, exquisite culinary offerings and breathtaking views of Jungfrau massif.
Want to add a hint of alpine charm to your celebration? Opt for yodellers and alphorn players to pay homage to the heritage of the region and try the trychler tradition where large cowbells are rung to celebrate and bring good luck.
Awe-inspiring Andes
These snow-capped Peruvian peaks, some of the highest in all of the Americas, are more than just a geographical marvel –they’re a symbolic connection to the divine. Indigenous peoples of the Andes believe that the mountains are embodiments of Pachamama, the “Mother Earth” deity, and protective spirits called apus.
Soak in the unique energy of the area in Peru’s Sacred Valley. Nestled in the Andean Highlands and framed by Machu Picchu and the vibrant, historical city of Cusco, the area is ideal for couples who appreciate the beauty of nature and ancient spirituality in equal measure.
There’s plenty for guests to explore in this enchanting area in addition to the obvious nearby Wonder of the World. The Maras Salt Mines, a stunning system of ancient mountainside salt evaporation ponds that are still in use, and circular Inca terraces of Moray both boggle the mind and make great wedding photo backdrops.
Plan your celebration at Mountain View Experience, a gorgeous property just over an hour outside of Cusco, boasting individual A-frame style cabins, panoramic views of the mountains and free-roaming llamas and alpacas. Choose between traditional vows or a ceremony guided by a Q’ero priest where the union is sealed with an offering to Pachamama, then celebrate with a reception featuring Peruvian food, textiles and live Andean music and dance performances.

Scenic Sunnmøre Alps
Norway’s fjords undoubtedly top the bucket lists of many avid travellers. The country is home to more than 1,000 of these long, narrow inlets of saltwater framed by steep cliffs carved by glaciers. They’re symbolic not only of the country’s Viking history but also its ongoing connection to nature.
In a country renowned for its landscapes, the Sunnmøre Alps are singular in their magnificence, and Hotel Union Øye – nestled in Norangsfjord about two and a half hours from Ålesund Airport Vigra – is the perfect place to bask in their beauty while celebrating your nuptials.
Host your ceremony in the hotel’s beautiful garden then follow your I-dos with a reception in the conservatory, where you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the fjord and alps. Add a little local flair to the party by opting for a traditional Norwegian kransekake or “wreath cake” featuring an elaborate tower of 18 chewy almond cookie rings in lieu of a typical wedding cake.
Afterwards, spend your days enjoying fjord cruises, wilderness picnics, taking part in hiking and helicopter tours or exploring the underwater world of Lake Lygnstøysvatnet on a snorkeling excursion.
GIVING BACK HONEYMOONS
NEWLYWEDS ARE CHOOSING PURPOSE-DRIVEN GETAWAYS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO
orget the traditional beachside honeymoon – today’s newlyweds are seeking something deeper. A growing number of Canadian couples are choosing honeymoons that combine romance with purpose, embracing voluntourism and community-based travel as a meaningful way to start married life.
According to G Adventures’ Sarah Marcucci, Manager of Public Relations, modern couples are choosing journeys that align with their shared values, making community tourism-focused honeymoons a meaningful option for celebrating one of life’s biggest milestones.
“While it might sound cliché, we hear it all the time: our trips offer life-changing experiences. To go through such a deeply transformative experience with the person you love most and to start a new chapter together by making a positive impact on the world is a truly incredible way to begin a marriage,” she says.
HONEYMOONS WITH HEART
Through G Adventures, newlyweds can choose from more than a thousand itineraries designed around community tourism. The company’s Geluxe line,
for instance, combines luxury with intention – offering elevated accommodations, authentic local experiences and a bit of free time to relax.
Marcucci points to several destinations that make for unforgettable honeymoons. Vietnam offers romance and adventure, with an overnight stay aboard a traditional junkboat in Ha Long Bay. Italy’s Tuscany and Umbria Vineyards Walks trip invites couples to cook alongside local chefs and wander through quiet medieval towns, while in Jordan, travellers can stargaze from a glamping tent in Wadi Rum after a cooking class led by women entrepreneurs.
Each of these itineraries carries what G Adventures calls a high “Ripple Score,” a measure of how much traveller spending directly benefits the local economy. It’s an added reassurance for honeymooners who want to know their tourism dollars are doing genuine good
PURPOSE MEETS LUXURY
The perception that giving back means giving up comfort is quickly fading. “Adventure travel doesn’t have to be rugged,” says Marcucci. “For honeymooners, our Geluxe trips are the perfect blend of elevated experiences and positive impact.” G Adventures’ brand new National Geographic Signature Journeys also focus on luxury travel with intention and purpose.
While these trips promise romance and adventure, they also serve a larger purpose. “Romance and giving back go hand-in-hand,” says Marcucci. “Community tourism is an act of love and care for the world and its people.” She explains that itineraries are designed so that couples give back simply by travelling – supporting local businesses, staying in community-owned accommodations and learning from local guides.
As Marcucci puts it, “When you travel with purpose, your journey becomes part of a global love story.” For couples seeking connection – with each other and the world – voluntourism honeymoons offer a new kind of romance: one rooted in compassion, curiosity and the joy of giving back together.

HONEYMOON CAPTURED
Make the most of your post-wedding getaway with a professional photographer by your side
BY CINDY SOSROUTOMO
veryone’s a photographer these days, armed with a smartphone that can capture the perfect Instagram shot. But while filters and apps can work wonders, they can’t compare to a professional photographer’s trained eye and expertise. That’s why more couples are booking honeymoon photographers to capture stunning images of one of life’s most memorable milestones. Sound extravagant? Perhaps. But with breathtaking photos of you hand-in-hand in Jamaica or watching the sunset in Greece, hiring a professional might just be the best decision you make as newlyweds.
WHAT DO THEY ACTUALLY DO?
Most honeymoon photographers don’t literally follow you around while you explore. Instead, they plan one or two dedicated photo sessions that fit naturally into your trip. They’ll scout locations for the best photo opportunities – think cobblestone streets, a white-sand
beach or a quaint outdoor café – and guide poses while considering lighting and composition to capture both your newlywed glow and the beauty of your surroundings.
Some photographers offer a more documentary-style experience, spending a full or half-day with you to capture candid moments, like exploring a local market, sailing on a catamaran or enjoying dinner on a rooftop patio. Though more expensive, this immersive approach produces a wider variety of natural, spontaneous shots.
WHAT’S
TYPICALLY INCLUDED?
Honeymoon photography packages usually include a photo shoot lasting one to four hours, resulting in roughly 50 or more high-resolution images. Photographers often handle logistics like permits and local travel costs if they’re based in your destination. If you’re bringing your own photographer, expect to cover flights, accommodation and meals. Optional add-ons may include drone or aerial photography, video highlights or reels, printed albums and extra hours or sessions.
DON’T FORGET TO ASK!
Be sure to confirm what’s included in your package – ask about the number of hours they’ll be shooting, how many photos you’ll get and whether travel time and entrance fees are extra. Inquire about their shooting style (timeless, editorial or candid?), whether they’ve shot at your destination before and if they have experience capturing honeymoons. Be sure to view their portfolio ahead of time and ask about turnaround time for your images, including whether ‘sneak peeks’ are provided. And clarify who covers travel costs upfront to avoid any surprise expenses later.
TIPS TO REMEMBER
If you’ve booked a shoot, plan it early in the trip before tan lines and travel fatigue set in. Also try to snap a few shots around golden hour – the period shortly after sunrise and before sunset – when the light is softest, warmest and most diffused. Choose coordinating outfits that suit your surroundings (think flowy dresses, easy linens or bare feet on the sand). Take potential logistics into account, including travel time and any permits or entrance fees for landmarks. And above all, keep it fun and relaxed! The best shots come from genuine interactions and simply being present in the moment.

WHY NEWLYWEDS ARE TRADING WHIRLWIND ITINERARIES FOR SLOW, SOULFUL HONEYMOONS THAT SAVOUR EVERY MOMENT
BY VAWN HIMMELSBACH
Lavendar Valensole Plateau, Southern France
After post-pandemic lockdowns, people wanted to experience the world. They booked bucketlist trips, travelled to far-flung corners of the globe and packed in as much action (and Instagram shots) as they could. But over the past year or two, that’s shifted: people are now looking to slow down and connect with the places they visit.
That ‘slow travel’ trend has also caught on with honeymoons. Taking it slow doesn’t mean lying around on a beach for a week or two — it’s more about being intentional and experiencing a destination at a slower pace.
It’s also about authentic travel; more couples are seeking unique, meaningful travel experiences rather than cookie-cutter honeymoon packages. They may even want off-the-grid experiences so, rather than documenting every moment of their honeymoon on social media, they can create memories together instead.
“When a couple says we want a slow travel honeymoon, I don’t hear lazy — I hear intentional,” says Deanna Beatty, travel designer with Romance and Foodie Travel in Toronto. “Instead of a packed itinerary hopping between three countries in 10 days, I’m planning for the couple to stay in one or maybe two places for a longer period of time.”
Slow travel honeymoons aren’t ‘niche’ anymore, she adds — more couples are specifically requesting them. “Over the last few years, more couples are coming to me and saying things like, ‘We don’t want to feel like we need a vacation after a vacation.’ Especially after planning a wedding, they would like to just take the time to be together.”
Longer stays, fewer places
Beatty likes to combine experiences with open days where nothing is scheduled. But it’s not about taking experiences away. “It’s about removing the need to overplan, over-move and over-commit yourself,” she says.
So, instead of changing hotels every two nights, couples can pick one or two hotels as their home base and do day trips from there, leaving plenty of time for transitions. So, for example, when travelling between
cities or regions, they can take a train or private transfer instead of a flight (nothing kills the romance like a stressful airport experience).
Slow travel honeymoons often mean longer stays in fewer places, with more cultural experiences — not packed guided tours with a bunch of strangers.
If couples want to prebook excursions or experiences, Beatty likes to find more meaningful ones, such as cooking with a local chef. Booking private, customized itineraries offers a more relaxed pace, so “the trip becomes more about savouring moments rather than rushing to tick off the checklist.”
Art de vivre
Some destinations have a slower-paced lifestyle that can be a natural fit for a slow travel honeymoon.
“The theme of slow travel fits perfectly with the French Riviera lifestyle, especially in more intimate destinations such as Antibes, Mandelieu-la-Napoule, Théoule-sur-Mer and Mougins,” says Florence Lecointre with Côte d’Azur Tourisme in France.
These destinations offer a more intimate experience for honeymooners “in search of serenity, authenticity and sensory discoveries,” she says, “far from the hustle and bustle of the big cities on the coast.”
Mougins, for example, is a hilltop village known for its ‘art de vivre,’ a French phrase that refers to the art of living well, savouring the moment and prioritizing pleasure in everyday activities — a perfect philosophy for a slow travel honeymoon.
This, of course, extends to gastronomy. In Mougins, newlyweds can base themselves in the newly renovated La Mas Candille for an authentic Provençal atmosphere, while taking cooking classes, discovering local artists or taking a wellness break at the spa.
Then there’s Antibes, which is perhaps not as wellknown as its glitzy neighbours (it sits between Cannes and Nice). But this resort town has a bit of everything, including golden-sand beaches — unlike the pebble beaches the French Riviera is known for.
Newlyweds can stay in the art deco Hôtel Belles Rives, former home of F. Scott Fitzgerald, which features a private beach, Michelin-starred restaurant and historic Bar Fitzgerald. But there’s plenty to do in town, too, such as exploring Old Antibes, a maze of narrow cobbled lanes lined with boutiques and pavement cafés,
Côte d’Azur
wandering the Marché Provençal market (a traditional French covered market) and visiting the Musée Picasso (the artist was a frequent visitor to the area).
Off-season appeal
Ultimately, when it comes to slow travel honeymoons, the destination itself doesn’t really matter; it’s how the trip is designed.
“Even in a popular destination, if you travel just outside the peak season, the whole trip can feel different,” says Beatty. When crowds are smaller, local life comes back. “You’re not waiting in lines to see things, in turn giving you more time to relax and take things at a slower pace.”
Another bonus is that the off-season almost always brings more flexibility, more hotel choices and better rates.
Paris, for example, may be a sprawling city, but travelling in the shoulder season, planning fewer activities each day and booking private excursions can help couples embrace the City of Love at a slower pace. After all, why wait in line to go up the Eiffel Tower when you can get a private tour that also includes a stop at the Pierre Hermé macaron bar?
Couples may want to consider basing themselves in a small Parisian hotel, such as Hôtel Rosalie with its romantic hidden gardens and rooftop terrace, and signing up for one of Wecandoo’s workshops that include everything from learning to make Champagne-based cocktails to creating custom perfumes.
For a spa day, the iconic Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace – Versailles is just 20 minutes from Paris, with a 2,800-square-metre spa. It’s also a great way to experience views of the Parc de Versailles without having
to wait in a long lineup. You could also combine a stay in Paris with a getaway in the Loire Valley – maybe even spend a few nights in a Renaissance castle like the Château du Rivau.
Slower journeys
A honeymoon by train is another way to slow things down – you get to explore a country (or two or three), but you don’t have to repack your suitcase every night.
And there are plenty of options, like the Belmond Andean Explorer, Peru’s only luxury sleeper train, which you can combine with a stay at Las Casitas, a Belmond hotel, in Colca Canyon. Or there’s the Rovos Rail, where you can spend 17 days travelling through South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania, including two nights on safari in the Madikwe Game Reserve.
For some couples, slow travel might involve immersion in nature. Buahan, an adults-only Banyan Tree Escape deep in the jungles of Bali, offers 16 private villas with a no-wall, no-door concept – so you’re completely immersed in nature, with unobstructed views of Bali’s seven peaks.
To literally unplug, there are a growing number of options where Wi-Fi or cellular access isn’t an option.
On Australis expedition cruises, which navigate the dramatic peaks and glaciers of the Patagonian Fjords, there’s no Wi-Fi or Internet — on purpose. In Canada, Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort in B.C.’s Great Bear Rainforest is so remote, there’s no cell signal. Couples can spend their time heli-hiking to hidden waterfalls, meditating in a floating sauna in the Pacific Ocean or just lying around with a good book.
“More couples are choosing slow travel honeymoons these days because they feel more honest. They give space for real rest, for connection,” says Beatty. “At the end of it, you truly feel like you’ve had a vacation, not just checked off a to-do list.”
