Dr. Arthur Covington was a disturbed man who struggled with inner demons. He often tried to suppress his psychotic traits through experiments on his own body. And the results they wrought only served to wreak further havoc on his own mind and soul.

He attempted to overcome his own mental illness by treating the mental illnesses of others by founding The Covington House mental asylum. Unfortunately, the “specialized immediate care” he provided his patients only made the doctor and his patients all the more mental.

Do you dare step foot inside this asylum, where patients run amok wearing the skinned faces of past patients? And do you dare come face-to-face with the mad doctor himself? Can you confront the madness plaguing him? Or will you make yourself mad in the process?

Winter Haven Moose Lodge will be operating this year’s event on their property. Proceeds will go toward Moose Charities.

The Moose Lodge will also be hosting a trunk or treat, presented by Stewart Auto, on Oct. 18 from 7 to 9 PM to raise money for the Humane Society of Polk County.

Farmer Alwyn Brody had an amazing harvest this year. And he’s dying to have you over for dinner. However, you might be the one dying, as he most likely wants you as dinner.

The “good” farmer arrived at the fertile banks of Red Waer Lake and has since made a “good” living for himself and his family...that is, until a hurricane swept them away into the lake and turned its waters blood red.

“In his madness and desire to rebuild his family, Farmer Brody made deals with Nightmare-ish demons and swamp creatures, vowing not to rest until he could regain what was stolen from him,” the website explains. “Instead of relying on food from the land, he now manipulates the plants and seeks human flesh for nourishment.”

Will you have the guts to tread on his farmland to see what horrors his fields have wrought? Or will you fall prey to one of his many traps and become his next victim?

Tickets are $30 at the door.

Pumpkin Ravioli with Sage and Candied Nuts

Fall’s Most Delicious Shortcut: Pumpkin Ravioli in a Snap

Is it time for all the pumpkin things? I hope you said yes, because I have a scrumptious pumpkin recipe -- pumpkin ravioli! But let’s make it easy. Rather than fresh pasta, we’ll use wonton wrappers, canned pumpkin and a simple two-ingredient sauce.

Imagine tender ravioli stuffed with pumpkin ricotta, bathed in sage-scented butter, and topped with crispy sage leaves and candied pecans and pepitas. This is comfort food at its finest.

This recipe uses canned pumpkin, but you could use fresh pumpkin, butternut or acorn squash. A 15-ounce can holds just shy of 2 cups of squash. If you have 1 3/4 cups cooked, pureed squash, you’re in business.

This creation is topped with irresistible candied pecans and pepitas. This is optional but highly recommended, as ravioli benefits from the crunchy contrast in texture. Any combination of nuts or seeds can be candied using this easy technique, even sunflower seeds.

I suggest you start by making the candied nuts. If you choose not to candy the nuts, you can simply add them to the browned butter sauce, and it’ll still be great.

PUMPKIN RAVIOLI WITH SAGE AND CANDIED NUTS

Fabulous! Visit Patti at www.divasonadime.

CANDIED

NUTS

Yield: 3/4 cup | Total Time: 10 mins

• 3/4 cup nuts/seeds, chopped

• 1 1/2 tablespoons butter

• 1/4 cup sugar

• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Toast nuts in a dry skillet over medium heat until fragrant. Push nuts to the outside of the skillet and melt butter in center. Coat nuts with butter, sprinkle with sugar and stir constantly until caramelized, about 5 minutes. Transfer to parchment to harden. Cool then break apart.

PUMPKIN WONTON RAVIOLI

Yield: 4 to 6 servings | Total Time: 40 mins

Filling:

• 2 tablespoons butter

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 2 tablespoons shallot or sweet onion, minced

• 1 tablespoon fresh sage, minced

• 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree

• 1/2 cup ricotta

• 1/4 cup Parmesan

1 tablespoon brown sugar

Pinch nutmeg

• 1 pkg. (14 ounce) wonton wrappers

• 1 egg, beaten

Melt butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Saute garlic and shallot until fragrant, add sage. Stir in pumpkin. Reduce heat, add

ricotta, Parmesan, brown sugar and nutmeg. Simmer for 5 minutes to thicken but keep it moving so it doesn’t burn. Set aside to cool. To fill ravioli: Beat egg with a splash of water for egg wash. Wonton wrappers dry out quickly so keep them covered with a damp towel. Using your finger, paint the egg mixture over all four edges of the wrapper. Place 1 tablespoon of the pumpkin mixture in the center. Lay a second wrapper over the filling, lining up the edges. Press to seal the wrappers together, pressing out any air bubbles. Crimp with a fork to seal. Repeat with remaining wrappers. Keep covered until ready to boil.

Boil ravioli in batches until they float. Serve with browned butter, sage leaves, and candied nuts.

BROWNED BUTTER WITH SAGE

Yield: 1/2 cup | Total Time: 35 mins

• 1/2 cup butter

• 15-20 sage leaves

Melt butter over medium heat until foaming and golden brown, 5-8 minutes. Add the sage leaves and let them sizzle for a couple of minutes. Remove the now crispy sage leaves to a paper towel to drain. Remove butter from the heat.

Ravioli are easy but a bit time-consuming. Enlist a buddy to make it fun. Makes a wonderful first course or main dish.

We're Better Than This

“Come now, and let us reason together,” - Isa 1:18 (KJV)

“[I’m not here to] suggest that times are not difficult and that we have nothing to fear. They are, and we do. But we live now in hard times, not end times. And we can have animus and not be enemies,” - Jon Stewart

On Wed. Sep. 10, 2025, around 12:30 PM, political activist Charlie Kirk was shot while addressing a group of students on the campus of Utah Valley University. He was taken to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was 31 and left behind a wife and two children.

This is by no means a eulogy for Kirk. I was not a fan of him. In fact, not only did I disagree with him, but vehemently so.

Once upon a time, when I was younger and more right-wing in my politics, I liked and shared the memes from his group Turning Point USA. However, as I matured and leaned more left-wing, I realized how juvenile his political views were.

used the barrel of a gun to stop him from saying it.

What that person did was wrong, not only morally, but philosophically.

As the titular character from V for Vendetta said, “ideas are bulletproof.” You can kill the person, but you cannot kill their ideas. Because an idea, once shared and adopted by others, becomes strong, resilient, even unkillable.

You cannot kill an idea with a bullet. Similar to how the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun, the only way to stop a man with a bad idea is with a man with a good idea.

Look! I know our country is polarized. I know we fundamentally disagree on many issues. But I know we have the capacity to work past our disagreements and come together for the common good.

1. MOVIES: In the United States, what is the title of the first Harry Potter movie?

2. GEOGRAPHY: The Prime Meridian Line runs through which major city?

3. HISTORY: When did federal child labor law start in the United States?

4. ACRONYMS: What does the acronym VPN stand for?

5. U.S. PRESIDENTS: Which president appeared on the 1960s comedy show “Laugh-In”?

6. TELEVISION: Which teen show starred Mayim Bialik before she got the role as Amy Fowler on “The Big Bang Theory”?

7. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: Where did the Minoan civilization flourish?

8. SCIENCE: What pH balance is considered neutral?

9. LITERATURE: In which of Shakespeare’s plays does the character Polonius appear?

10. ANIMAL KINGDOM: In which African country can the Bonobos species of ape be found in the wild?

So, yes. Kirk was a person I disagreed with, even opposed. He said many things that rubbed me and other people the wrong way. Even then, I never wished death on him or anyone else in his political camp.

Because as much as I disagreed with what he said, at the end of the day, he, as an American citizen, had the right to say it. This is America, the land of free speech. Under the First Amendment, everyone has the right to speak their minds without fear of being jailed, arrested, or even shot.

Or, at least, that’s how it should have been.

Much has been speculated about Kirk’s shooter. Some place him on the far-left; others, the far-right. That young man’s political views were as mixed up as he was. But one thing is certain: this person hated what Kirk had to say and

More than 15 years ago, Jon Stewart addressed the nation at the Rally to Restore Sanity. We were divided then, and we remain divided now. Regardless, Stewart believed Americans could still work together.

“We work together to get things done every damn day,” he said. “Most Americans don’t live their lives solely as Democrats, Republicans, liberals, or conservatives. Americans live their lives more as people who are just a little bit late for something they have to do—often something that they do not want to do—but they do it— impossible things every day that are only made possible by the little reasonable compromises that we all make.”

America would be a different place if more Americans had heeded his words. Perhaps Kirk would still be alive.

America, we’re better than this.

The Concert Band & Soldiers’ Chorus are the oldest and largest of The U.S. Army Field Band’s performing components. Founded in 1946 and 1957 respectively, these two ensembles combine to present joint concerts on their national tours. They have performed in all 50 states and 30 foreign countries for audiences totaling hundreds of millions. The 60-member Concert Band and 29-member Soldiers’ Chorus per-

form regularly in some of the most famous concert halls in the world, and just as often in the humblest auditoriums in the smallest of communities. The joining of these two ensembles allows them to offer unparalleled versatility of programming, ranging from orchestral masterworks and operatic arias to Sousa marches, jazz classics, and Broadway musicals. The band and chorus also perform independently and have recently shared the stage with such ensembles as the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra.

Central Florida Health Care

30-million-dollar Capital Campaign

Central Florida Health Care is in the midst of a 30-million-dollar campaign to help with the new Lakeland Primary Health Center and Winter Haven Primary. Both projects will replace existing buildings to pave the way for more patients, providers, and services.

The Lakeland Health Center will be home to a Diabetes Center of Excellence & Teaching Kitchen to help patients manage their disease and improve their health outcomes. The Winter Haven Health Center will be dedicated to administration and healthcare. Both clinics will continue providing a full range of services including Adult and Pediatric Medical and Dental, OB/GYN, Behavioral Health, Lab and X-ray, and complete Pharmacy services.

The Winter Haven Health Center will serve approximately 12,000 additional patients, while the Lakeland Health Center will serve an additional 16,400 patients. The new health centers will allow Central Florida Health Care

to bring 'Healthcare with a Heart" to nearly 30,000 additional residents in Central Florida and improve the quality of life throughout the region.

In 2024, Central Florida Health Care saw nearly 80 thousand patients throughout its 16 health centers and received more than 268 thousand visits. CFHC opened a 17th health center, Bartow Pediatrics, in June 2025. Central Florida Health Care provides healthcare to anyone, regardless of their ability to pay, which is an essential resource for many families without insurance.

Central Florida Health Care is hosting its second annual “Classy & Comfy Gala” taking place on October 9, 2025, from 6-9 pm at Adams Estate in Lake Alfred. The enchanting evening will raise funds for the campaign designated for building two vital health centers in

Lakeland and Winter Haven.

The success of the "Thank You" Campaign will ensure that Central Florida Health Care continues to bring high-quality, affordable healthcare, covering the cost of real estate and construction of the health centers, equipment purchases, and staffing.

For more information on how best to get involved, please reach out to Sherrie Pratt (863) 624-8614 or spratt@cfhconline.org

Founded in 1972, Central Florida Health Care is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving the Polk, Highlands, and Hardee Communities. 1. Who wrote and released “Band on the Run”?

2. Which group released “Winchester Cathedral”?

3. Who wrote and was the first to release “Rhinestone Cowboy”?

4. Which group released “Don’t Leave Me This Way”?

5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Now I’ve got a guy and his name is Dooley, He’s my guy and I love him truly.”

ANSWERS

1. Paul McCartney, in 1974. Demo tapes of the song and others were stolen from McCartney and his Wings band when they were recording in Nigeria. They had to record all the music again from memory.

2. The New Vaudeville Band,

• “To speed the healing of bruises, try eating pineapple. Drink lots of water, too. I play contact sports, and this has always helped me.” -- R.E. in Missouri

• Need new tires? Don’t overlook big-box stores with automotive departments. Sometimes the best deals aren’t at the tire places!

• Are you dreaming of a beach vacation right about now? Maybe you’re looking to make an early booking. Here’s a travel tip: Skip the ocean views from your hotel room. The rooms facing the ocean have a 20-25% higher rate. There’s

in 1966. It was intentionally made to sound like the singer was using a megaphone. It later won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Song.

3. Singer-songwriter Larry Weiss, in 1974. The most popular version was covered the following year by Glen Campbell.

4. Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, in 1975. Their album version clocked in at 6 minutes 8 seconds.

5. “Pink Shoe Laces,” by Dodie Stevens, in 1959. In the song, the singer loves her guy because of his clothes, not just his pink shoe laces, but a polka-dot vest and a hat with a purple band.

UMA

Uma is a 4-month-old calico with a big personality packed into a tiny, colorful body. She's a playful little whirlwind who’ll chase lasers, pounce on toys, and entertain herself (and you) for hours. When she’s not in play mode, she loves cozying up on soft blankets for a well-earned nap. Uma is also quite the talker—she’s not afraid to let you know when she wants something.

TONI

Toni is a beautiful 3-year-old female domestic short hair with a lovely mix of black, brown, and white fur and striking green eyes. She’s super social and full of energy—always ready to make a new friend, human or toy! Toni absolutely loves to play and explore, and she isn’t shy about using her claws or giving playful nibbles when she gets excited. She’s also an outgoing adventurer.

BUZZ

usually a nice common area where you can admire the view, anyway.

• “If you’re thinking of getting a new TV, don’t forget about safety. Be sure to use a wall strap, or just go ahead and mount it to the wall!” -- E.S. in Virginia

• Ease stress when dropping off a child at day care by creating a special, just-for-the-two-of-you ritual. Maybe a secret handshake or a kiss for your cheek and one in the hand to “save for later.”

Reinforce with your attitude that it’s a good and fun thing to go to school.

• Here’s a great school tip from a young reader, P.J. in Florida: “Take a photo of your spelling words with your mom or dad’s cellphone, and you can go over them anytime, anywhere!”

Buzz is a 1-year-old hound mix with a heart as big as his love for playtime! This sweet, happy-go-lucky boy does wonderfully with both adults and children, making him a great companion for families or anyone looking for a loyal and loving pup. He is always ready for fun—whether it’s playing fetch with balls, rope toys, frisbees, or even his beloved stuffed animals. One of his favorite games is hide and seek.

COCO

Coco is a 3.5-year-old Chihuahua mix with a big personality and an even bigger heart. She’s energetic, alert, and always ready for an adventure. Because she’s strong and loves to jump, Coco would do best in a home with older children who can handle her playful spirit. She thrives in open spaces and would love a big yard to run and explore. She can be a bit nervous in new environments.
