S’more

Delights: Elevate Your Campfire Treats with These Delicious Twists

Confession time: I’m not a happy camper. I really don’t enjoy camping. Roughing it, sleeping in a sleeping bag in a tent in the wild. No thanks. It’s a little too quiet for me. If my hotel room faces the trees, I would consider that to be camping. But it seems like everyone’s going camping, and that got me thinking about the one camp tradition I can get behind: S’mores!

This warm, ooey, gooey treat always leaves us wanting some more. Which is where the name is believed to originate. As in “I want s’more!” It’s uncertain who invented the s’more, but Loretta Scott Crew, who made them for Girl Scouts by the campfire, is given credit for the recipe when it was first published in a 1927 publication called “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.” But it wasn’t until 1974 when Merriam-Webster added it to the dictionary, making it official.

Of course, much of the fun of s’mores is cooking them with friends and family over a campfire, but if you don’t have access to a fire, don’t despair! These can be made on a BBQ, the stovetop or, my personal favorite, with a kitchen torch.

Here’s how to make classic s’mores and a few creative variations to enjoy.

The Recipe The Recipe

CLASSIC S’MORES

Yield: 1 serving Total Time: 3 minutes

• 2 graham crackers

• 1 large marshmallow

• 1 piece of milk chocolate (about 1 ounce)

If you’re using a campfire, roast the marshmallow on a skewer over the flames until it’s golden brown and gooey (about 1-2 minutes). If you’re indoors, you can toast it over a gas stove or in the oven under broiler for a few seconds. Place one graham cracker on a plate. Top it with a piece of chocolate. Once your marshmallow is toasted, carefully place it on top of the chocolate. Add the second graham cracker on top and press down gently. Let it sit for a few seconds to allow the chocolate to melt a bit, then dig in!

There is nothing lacking in the traditional s’more. The ingredients are inexpensive and easy to find. But let’s take the humble s’more and give it a Diva makeover, because it’s what I do. We can switch out crackers and candy bars, and add some unexpected ingredients. This way you have a ridiculously delicious finale for every BBQ, cookout or campout for the rest of the summer.

9. Banana Split S’mores: Graham Cracker + Chocolate + Banana Slices + Strawberry Slices + Marshmallow

10. Black Forest S’mores: Chocolate Graham Cracker or Cookie + Grilled Cherries + Chocolate + Marshmallow

Now that we have all these s’mores ideas to try, we’d better get started. With or without the camping part, let’s roast some marshmallows!

On Dec. 4, 2024, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed outside the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan. Five days later, authorities arrested Luigi Mangione as the suspected shooter.

Two days later, in an Atlantic op-ed titled “Decivilization May Already Be Under Way,” Adrienne LaFrance cited Thompson’s murder as evidence that the United States may be slipping into “decivilization.”

“The line between a normal, functioning society and catastrophic decivilization can be crossed with a single act of mayhem,” she wrote, arguing that the healthcare CEO’s murder “amounts to a blinking-and-blaring warning signal for a society that has become already too inured to bloodshed and the conditions that exacerbate it.”

Personally, if I were to write such an op-ed (as I am writing now), I would not cite a healthcare CEO’s murder as a sign of “decivilization.” Rather, one year later, I would point to the murder of a political pundit.

I don’t need to tell you about Charlie Kirk, a conservative pundit who was assassinated during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on Sep. 10, 2025. I already wrote extensively about his murder and my opinions on it in last month’s column.

As I explained in that column, I did not agree with Kirk or his political opinions. But as much as I vehemently disagreed with him, I would never want to see him or anyone else of his political affiliation killed for their beliefs or opinions.

1. AD SLOGANS: Which company was advertised with the slogan, “Think Outside the Bun”?

2. TELEVISION: Which TV show spawned the spinoff sitcom “Mama’s Family”?

3. U.S. CITIES: In which city would you find the USS Arizona Memorial?

4. ANATOMY: What are the bones that make up the spine known as?

5. GEOGRAPHY: What is the lowest point in the United States?

6. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: What is the traditional material in a 40th anniversary gift?

7. MOVIES: What is the name of the tow truck in the animated movie “Cars”?

8. CURRENCY: Which former president is depicted on the U.S. $50 bill?

9. LANGUAGE: What does the texting acronym SMH mean?

10. LITERATURE: Where do Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends live?

LaFrance didn’t point to the murder alone as evidence of “decivilization,” but also to the praise and admiration the killer received in the aftermath. Combined with America’s high rates of violent gun crime and deaths, she argued, these factors signaled the country’s unravelling as a civilized society.

“The process of decivilization may begin with profound distrust in institutions and government leaders, but that distrust gets far worse in a society where people brutalize one another, as violence acts as a catalyst for further societal breakdown,” she wrote.

To be clear, a single CEO’s murder did not cause America’s societal decay. Arguably, our country has long been declining with growing inequality and wealth disparity, rising healthcare costs and debt, and a steady drift from democratic norms toward authoritarianism. Rather, the killing, as LeFrance argues, served as a tipping point that accelerated an already worsening situation.

To me, killing someone over what they said signals a deeper societal decline than killing someone for amassing wealth by running an insurance company. Murdering someone for their speech or beliefs belongs to primitive societies in centuries past. As a liberal democracy that values free expression and tolerance, we should have progressed beyond it.

I’ve been writing this column for nearly seven years now. In that time, I’ve ticked off many people with my personal and political opinions. I’ve received my fair share of hate mail. I’ve even received an angry anonymous text. When I asked that person how they got my number, they told me: “Don’t you mind that. Don’t go bad mouthing our president.” (For the record: that was over a column where I quipped how Trump had been wasting our taxpayer money playing golf.)

You know what never happened to me during that time? Someone threatening to kill me or commit violence against me. Why? Because here in America we disagree with people with our words not our fists or bullets.

Following Kirk’s murder, I can’t say that’s the case anymore.
