America’s Not Great, But It Can Be!

In the first episode of the 2012 HBO drama “The Newsroom”, news anchor Will McAvoy is asked by a college student, “Why America is the greatest country in the world?”

His answer: it’s not.

“There is no evidence,” he tells her, “to support the statement that we are the greatest country in the world.”

Will then rattles off a list of statistics revealing how America lags behind other developed countries. America ranks 7th in literacy, 27th in math, 22nd in science, 49th in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, 3rd in median household income, 4th in labor force, and 4th in exports.

America, he argues, leads the world in only three categories: number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending, as its military spends more than the next 26 countries combined—25 of whom are allies!

“When you ask what makes us the greatest country in the world,” he tells her. “I don’t know what the f*** you’re talking about.”

great and hoped it would be made “great again” under this current presidential administration.

But, like Will, I’m left wondering why anyone would assume America is “great.” How can anyone call this country “great” when it has done so many less-than-great things? Things which, had they happened in any other country, would get it denounced as a tin-pot dictatorship.

1. ANIMAL KINGDOM: What is a female goat called?

2. TELEVISION: What is the name of the town in “Gilmore Girls”?

3. GEOGRAPHY: How many states does the Appalachian Trail cross?

4. MOVIES: Which actress voices the character Jessie in “Toy Story 2”?

5. U.S. PRESIDENTS: What is believed to have caused President Zachary Taylor’s death?

6. ANATOMY: What is the most abundant protein in the human body?

7. GEOMETRY: How many sides does a hexagon have?

8. LITERATURE: Serial killer Hannibal Lecter first appears in which novel?

9. ASTRONOMY: What are planets outside our solar system called?

10. MUSIC: Who was the first women inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

Aretha Franklin

However, Will ends his speech on a positive note. He mentions how America has accomplished great things and still has the potential to achieve greatness.

“America is not the greatest country in the world anymore,” he says. “But it can be.”

I write this column only a few days before the 4th of July, and by the time this magazine is published, the holiday will most likely have passed.

Most Americans would have celebrated the holiday as they usually do every year: grilling hot dogs, watching fireworks, and wearing their reddest, whitest, and bluest outfits. Most of them would have spent that holiday thinking, like that naive college student, that America is the greatest country in the world. Others would have reminisced on how America was once

Our current president was charged and convicted on 34 felony counts. In a just and fair political system, being a convicted felon would have disqualified him from running for public office. Yet not only was he not disqualified, but he won the popular vote and now serves in the highest office in the land. Since then, our president has done many things to dishonor his position. He has allowed a man to be wrongfully deported to a foreign prison without due process. He has defied the Supreme Court by refusing to return that man to America. He has deployed the National Guard to California to crack down on protests. And he has bombed another country without seeking congressional authorization.

Again, if all of this had happened in another country, it would not be considered “great”, and its leader would most certainly not be considered “leader of the free world.”

But, like Will, I remain cautiously optimistic. I know America has accomplished great things. We built great cities. We achieved great milestones. We made great technological advancements. And, most importantly, we were founded on great ideals—most notably, that “all men are created equal.” Sure, we didn’t always live up to those ideals, but we sure strived for them, and that’s what made us great.

America is not the greatest country. But it can be. We just need to do better. The views and opinions expressed in columns are not necessarily the views and opinions of Today & Tonight Magazine or Today & Tonight, Inc.

1. Johnny Mathis and Jane Olivor. The song received a nomination for Best Original Song. The 1978 film starred Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn.

• When cooking meat, you have to take care. Here are two tips straight from my local butcher: First, let meats come to room temperature before cooking. It allows the meat to cook more evenly and you won’t end up with a cold center and a burnt outside. Secondly, when your meat comes off the grill or out of the oven, give it time to rest before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the cut of meat, and you’ll end up with juicy goodness in every bite.

• “Depending on how you scoop it, you can end up with too much or too little flour. Here is a tip about getting the best amount every time. Give the flour a stir with a spoon and then lightly spoon it into a measuring cup. When it is heaped over, use a knife to

2. Phil Phillips, in 1959. Even though the song shot to the top of the charts, Phillips never recorded another song.

3. Ringo Starr, in 1971. The song was supposed to be titled “You Gotta Pay Your Dues” and was written over several years before and after the breakup of the Beatles.

4. Gordon Lightfoot, in 1974.

5. “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” by the Platters, in 1958. The song has been widely covered over the years since first being written in 1933 for the musical comedy “Roberta,” but it was the Platters’ version that topped the charts and put the song in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

level out the measure without tamping down.” -- Y.E. in Arkansas

• “Baking is a science as well as an art. It’s about interaction of ingredients and what happens when they mix in certain ways. So this is not so much a tip as a caution. Make sure of your substitutions, and use the right amounts of things. Then your cakes will be light and fluffy and your pastry will be flaky and moist.” -- B.G. in Pennsylvania

• Berries are in season and there’s no greater time to stock up. But don’t feel like you have to make jam out of all the berries. Freeze in a single layer and transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be popped into muffins and quick breads, as well as eaten straight out of the bag for a delicious treat.

• When searing meat on a stovetop, be sure your pan is oiled (if called for) and at temperature. Otherwise, it’ll stick.
