Rendkívüli örömömre szolgál, hogy bemutathatom az idei Titanic Filmfesztivál programját. Az itt szereplő 52 film gondos kiválogatása során a változatosság kulcsszavát tartottam szem előtt: olyan összeállításra törekedtem, amely a filmművészet gazdagságát ünnepli, és úgy érzem, büszkén mondhatom, a végeredmény pontosan ezt tükrözi. A világ szinte minden szegletéből (ha pontos akarok lenni, összesen 34 országból) érkezett alkotások műfajok, stílusok, tematikák és hangulatok széles skáláját vonultatják fel. A versenyben szereplő filmek egyfelől kivétel nélkül első vagy második nagyjátékfilmek, tehát fiatal, feltörekvő tehetségek munkái. Ami azonban ezen túl is összeköti a versenyszekció válogatását az idei évben, az, hogy mindegyikük női főhősöket szerepeltet. Az erős női karakterek (vagy inkább a hiányuk) napjainkban „forró témát” jelentenek. Fesztiválunk büszke rá, hogy idén számos filmet mutathat be, amely női hősöket állít a középpontba, közülük is kiemelve a Megmaradt Alice-nek című filmet, amelyért idén Julian Moore megkapta a legjobb női főszereplő Oscar-díját. Szívből remélem, hogy az idei fesztivál legalább akkora élvezetet jelent majd az Önök számára, mint számomra a program összeállítása! AllAn SøRenSen programigazgató It gives me immense pleasure to present this year’s Titanic programme. Diversity has been the keyword for me in making the careful selection of 52 films that you see before you now. I was aiming for a programme that celebrated the diversity of cinema, and I am proud to say that I feel we have accomplished exactly that. The films come from all corners of the world (more precisely there are productions from 34 different nations) and represent a wide variety of genres, styles, themes, and emotions. The films in competition are all first or second feature films, i.e. made by upcoming directors. What truly unites the competition films this year, though, is that I decided as a criteria that they should all feature female protagonists. In general, strong roles for women (or more precisely the lack of them) is a hot button issue in the film world these days. This year, Titanic is proud to present many such films with women at centre stage, not least Still Alice, for which Julianne Moore took home this year’s best leading actress Academy Award. I hope that you will enjoy this year’s festival as much as I enjoyed putting together the programme! AllAn SøRenSen, Program director

Miről szól a jó film? Arról, hogy felkészültünk-e az idegenekkel történő találkozásokra? Vagy épp legbensőségesebb kapcsolatainkról? Vannak-e még olyan senkiföldjei a bolygónknak, melyeken nem játszódik legalább egy jó történet? Ha igaz, hogy a zene mindenkié, mi a helyzet a filmmel? És ha nem készíthet valaki filmet szabadon? Álljanak itt az iráni Jafar Panahi, a Taxi rendezőjének szavai: „Filmrendező vagyok. Nem tehetek mást, mint hogy filmeket rendezzek. A film az életem értelmét jelenti, valamit, amivel kifejezhetem magam. Semmi sem gátolhat meg abban, hogy filmeket csináljak. Amikor a legsötétebb sarokba szorítanak, belső lényemhez fordulok, és az ilyen személyes terekben – az összes korlátozás ellenére is – az alkotás még inkább kényszerré válik. Csakis a filmművészet körül forognak a gondolataim. Ezért csinálok továbbra is filmeket, bármi is történik, hogy kifejezzem az együttérzésemet, hogy úgy érezzem: élek.” Egy film attól nyer értelmet, ha megnézik. Az idei filmjeinket látni kell! Is there a place on our planet where one cannot find a good story? If music is for all, what about cinema? What if someone is not allowed to make films? Jafar Panahi, director of Taxi: “I’m a filmmaker. I can’t do anything else but make films. Cinema is my expression and the meaning of my life. Nothing can prevent me from making films. Because when I’m pushed into the furthest corners I connect with my inner self. And in such private spaces, despite all limitations, the necessity to create becomes even more of an urge. Cinema as an Art becomes my main preoccupation. That is the reason why I have to continue making films under any circumstances to pay my respects and feel alive.” A film gets its meaning by having been seen. This year’s films must be seen! ragályi elemér 1939-ben született Rákosligeten. Több mint négy évtizedes karrerje során közel 100 filmet fényképezett, köztük mozis és televíziós játékfilmeket, minisorozatokat és dokumentumfilmeket. A legtermékenyebb magyar operatőrök egyike, Amerikában és Európában is sokfelé dolgozott. A Magyar Filmszemle hatszoros „Legjobb operatőr”-díjasa. Számos, nemzetközi fesztiválokon díjazott, valamint Oscar- , Emmy- és ACE-díjnyertes filmet fényképezett. Elemér Ragályi was born in 1939 in Rákosliget, Hungary. During his 40-year career, he shot almost 100 features, mini-series, TV movies, and documentaries. As one of the most prolific Hungarian cinematographers, he has worked extensively in North America and Europe. A six-time winner of Critic’s prize for Best Cinematography at the Hungarian Film Festival, he shot numerous films that went on to win major awards at international film festivals, the Academy Awards, the Emmy's, and the ACE's.

Timo malmi 1952-ben született. A Kaurismäki testvérek által elindított észak-finnországi Midnight Sun filmfesztivál művészeti igazgatója. Emellett az Ilta-Sanomat, a második legnagyobb finn napilap filmkritikusa és Finnország legrégebbi filmes magazinja, a Filmihullu („Filmőrült”) szerkesztője. A filmklub-mozgalomhoz régi szálak fűzik – Malmi 45 éve vezet filmklubot szülővárosában, a Jean Sibelius otthonaként ismert Järvenpää-ban, és szervezi a helyi filmvetítéseket. Born in 1952, Timo Malmi is an artistic director of Midnight Sun Film Festival, established by the Kaurismäki brothers, in Finnish Lapland. Malmi is also a movie critic in Ilta-Sanomat, the second largest newspaper in Finland and the editor of Filmihullu (“Movie crazy”), the oldest Finnish film magazine. His roots come from the film society movement – Malmi has been a leader of the film society in his home town Järvenpää (“the home town of Jean Sibelius”) for 45 years, and is also programming the local cinema screenings.

Borislav anđelić Borislav Anđelić a belgrádi napilap, a „Večernje Novosti” filmkritikusa, valamint a FIPRESCI (Filmkritikusok Nemzetközi Szövetsége) szerbiai szekciójának elnöke. Nemzetközi magazinok és TV-csatornák számára dolgozik, napjainkban a régió legjelentősebb filmes szakírói között tartják számon. Több szerbiai filmfesztivál művészeti igazgatója volt, zsűritagként pedig többek között a berlini, cannes-i, torontói, puszani, wiesbadeni és thesszaloniki fesztiválok után idén a Titanic-on is köszönthetjük. Borislav Anđelić is the film critic of Belgrade's daily newspaper “Vecernje Novosti” and president of FIPRESCI Serbia section, today numbers among the most influental film journalists in the region, covering film events for international magazines and TV. He has been an artistic director of various national film festivals. As a jury member, he has been responsible for selecting winners at film festivals in Berlin, Cannes, Toronto, Pusan, Wiesbaden and Thessaloniki, among others, and will do so this year at Titanic Film Festival in Budapest.

1971-ben, a fegyveres konfliktusok kirobbanásának első éveiben, Gary Hook, a fiatal, tapasztalatlan brit katona egységét Belfastba vezénylik békefenntartónak. Gary Hook is a young, inexperienced British soldier, whose unit is sent to Belfast in 1971 to help with peacekeeping in the early years of The Troubles. During a patrol, when one of the soldiers looses his gun, Hook and another guy start to pursue the thief. As a protest escalates, their unit and the police pull out, leaving the two of them behind the enemy lines. Hook sees his fellow soldier shot dead by a young Nationalist before fleeing through streets and back alleys, finally eluding his pursuers. Unable to tell friend from foe, the raw recruit must survive the night alone and find his way to safety through the alien and deadly landscape. With Jack O’Connell’s (Unbroken) brilliant performance in the role of the terrified rookie, the feature debut of experienced TV director Yann Demange is a modern “war is hell” parable disguised in the form of a gripping and suspenseful survival-thriller.

Born in Paris, France, 1977, he grew up in London and began his career filming live concerts and working on promos for international musicians. At first sight, the butterfly collector Cynthia acts as the dominant one, but the director soon reveals that things may not be as they seem – through repeating scenarios we discover that in a certain way, Evelyn is the master. The eagerly anticipated follow up to Katalin Varga and Berberian Sound Studio, Peter Strickland’s artfully shot, stylish pastiche to the 1970s European sex/horror subgenre is in fact a sensual, dark melodrama, which is more about the romantic than the sexual relationship – about bending ourselves to make one person happy.

What Dino doesn't count on, is falling in love, finding herself in the centre of an odd love triangle, an unpredictable struggle for affection as well as dominance. Underdog is a tender story of love and longing, yet at the same time an unmerciful observation of class society and the shifted power balance between Sweden and Norway.

1977-ben született a finnországi Porvoo-ban. Helsinkiben tanult filmrendezést. Valkeapää-t 2005-ben beválasztották a cannes-i Cinéfondation rezidencia programjába, ennek keretében kidolgozhatta a Látogató forgatókönyvét, amelyből később rendezői bemutatkozása készült 2008-ban. A Megléptek (2014) a második játékfilmje. J-P Valkeapää was born in 1977 in Porvoo, Finnland. He studied film direction at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. In 2005 Valkeapää was selected to the Cannes Cinéfondation residency program to develop the script for The Visitor, his directorial debut, which premiered in 2008. Az Antigoné mítosza ihlette Alpha a nem túl távoli jövőbe helyezve teszi fel a máig megválaszolatlan kérdést: igazságos-e az ember alkotta törvény? „Míg a mítoszban Antigoné kész volt feláldozni az életét valamiért, amit igazságosnak érzett, a mi hősnőnk még nem érte el ezt a pontot. A közösségi finanszírozásban elkészült Alpha mozgóképes transzmédia-performansz, amelyet ókori színházakban, múzeumokban, kiállítóterekben, alternatív helyszíneken és hagyományos színházakban mutatnak be, kórussal és színészekkel, élő vonósnégyes kísérettel, összemosva ezzel a mozi, a színház, a performansz és a koncert határait. A rendező szerint az előadás olyan, akár egy szophoklészi dráma, amelyben „az egyik színészt egy film helyettesíti.” Inspired by the ancient myth of Antigone, but transposed into the not-so-far future, Alpha poses the still unaswered question: “Is human law, Justice?” The director: “While in the myth, we see Antigone ready to sacrifice her life for what she feels just, our heroine has not reached that point. In fact, she is at the exact opposite. She is not and does not want to become Antigone. In the play we witness the birth of an Antigone, rather than just seeing her in action.” The crowd-funded Transmedia Cinematic Performance Alpha is performed in Ancient Theatres, Museums, Art spaces, Alternative Venues and traditional Theatres with a live string quartet, chorus and actor, blurring the lines between Cinema, Theatre, Performance and Concert. According to the director, it is like a Sophoclean era Drama in which “one Actor is substituted with a Film.”

Stathis Athanasiou Orvosi, animációs és filmrendezői tanulmányokat is folytatott. Afia Nathaniel informatikusból lett filmkészítő, aki előszeretettel feszegeti a narratív film határait. A Columbia Egyetem filmes mesterszakának adjunktusaként fiatal amerikai és pakisztáni filmes diákokat mentorál. A World YWCA nevű nemzetközi nonprofit nőjogi szervezet munkatársaként fontos beszédeket tartott a nők elleni erőszakról, valamint a művészek társadalmi változásokban játszott aktív szerepéről. A Dukhtar (2014) az első nagyjátékfilmje. Computer-scientist-turned-filmmaker, Afia loves pushing the boundaries of narrative film. She is an adjunct faculty member for Columbia University’s MFA Film program and has mentored student filmmakers based in the US and Pakistan. She has worked for an international women’s non-profit organisation, the World YWCA and given keynote addresses on the issue of violence against women and the role of artists as agents of change. Daughter (2014) is her debut feature film.

De a tettek, akár a való életben, nem maradnak következmények nélkül.” An affluent city woman arrives at a desolate South Korean farm where a pregnant teenaged girl and her mother have agreed to let her secretly adopt the girl's unborn child. As the pregnancy progresses and the three women fall into a new rhythm of life together, their business arrangement becomes more than they bargained for. Both the girl’s mother and the women are determined to make the arrangement work, but things become complicated when the baby's father surfaces. As the social pressure to bare children and continue the family bloodline is immense, secret adoptions are still not uncommon in Korea. The director on his film: “For In Her Place, I wanted each character to be afforded the chance to give their point of view. Nobody is right and nobody is wrong; these are just people searching for a hopeful situation that would offer them a second chance. However, like in real-life, there must be also consequences for actions.”

Albert Shin Koreai-kanadai felmenőkkel rendelkezik, a York University-n tanult filmkészítést. The Inguri River forms a natural border dividing Georgia and the breakaway Republic of Abkhazia. Every spring the river brings fertile soil from the Caucasus down to the plains, creating tiny islands: small clusters of no man’s land. Our story begins when an old Abkhaz farmer sets foot on one of the islands. The old man builds a hut for him and his teenage granddaughter, he ploughs the earth and together they sow corn. As his granddaughter blossoms into womanhood and the corn ripens, the old man is confronted by the inescapable cycle of life. Hungarian cinematographer Elemér Ragályi's artful compositions set the stage for this slowpaced, almost wordless drama. Corn Island has been selected as the Georgian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2015 Academy Awards, and won the Crystal Globe prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Martin is alone on a hiking trip in the mountains and we hear all of his uncensored thoughts and brutally honest observations about himself and the people around him. With thoughts and fantasies ranging from the trivial and infantile to the existential and profound, the film is an honest and funny portrait of a young man wanting to break the mould. Out of Nature is the second feature film by Ole Giæver, written and directed by himself, in which he also plays the lead role as Martin. The film was selected for Hungarian distribution by members of the Scope50 project, who also participate in the creation of a marketing campaign for the film. Their other films include The Fluffer (2001) and the The Last of Robin Hood (2013). Glatzer, who was diagnostised with ALS in 2011, died on 11 March 2015, at the age of 63. Undaunted by his illness, he was on set of Still Alice every day, despite incredible physical difficulties.

As all parties want them dead, the three have to fight their way out.

Gentle and sensitive Linh grew up in a small rural town with her two aunts who treat her poorly and control her life completely. Thien decided to marry her in order to provide her a better life. Their marriage was happy at first, but as Thien’s miserly ways taxed his wife, they started to grow apart, to the point when she could no longer bear living with him. Thien is now forced to look back on their life and examine himself – his materialistic pursuits and the spiritual silence between the two that preceded his wife’s death, in order to make sense of her suicide.

One day, Bi was the last customer in the centre. As he was leaving with the workers, he took the hand of a blind masseur to guide him down the stairs. When they were halfway down, the power went suddenly out, plunging the building into darkness. Bi was forced to stop until the blind masseur led him safely down to the bottom of the stairs. Just like that, a blind man showed a sighted man the way, leading him to the light. In the dark, we all need the guidance of the blind.” – the director.

Gabe Ibáñez 1971-ben született. Palesztin-szír költő, irodalomkritikus és tervezőgrafikus. 1979-ben született Damaszkuszban, 2009 óta Milánóban él. Jelenleg kreatív igazgatóként és grafikai tervezőként dolgozik az emírségekbeli Noon kiadóvállalatnak.

Born in Lucca, Italy, 1982. Writer and independent journalist. In 2006 he founded the observatory of the victims of the borders Fortress Europe and since 2011 he has been covering Arab Springs and the wars in Libya and in Syria.

Now 33, he is an artist in Ukraine, with a singular obsession with the earth-changing catastrophe – why did it actually happen? Was there more to the story than the Soviet government let on? And, most importantly, what did this all have to do with the giant, mysterious steel structure now rotting away 2 miles from the disaster site: a hulking Cold War weapon known as the Duga and nicknamed “the Russian Woodpecker” for the strange, constant clicking radio frequencies that it emits? In Chad Gracia's documentary/conspiracy thriller, Alexandrovich returns to the ghost towns in the radioactive Exclusion Zone to try to find answers. Az Orosz harkály az első filmje. Chad Gracia has worked in New York theater for nearly 20 years as a producer, dramaturg, and playwright, with a focus on plays in verse. His works have seen productions in various cities in the United States and Europe. He co-wrote Gilgamesh, a drama based on the Sumerian epic, with Pulitzer-Prize winning author Yusef Komunyakaa, and has long collaborated with the American verse playwright Kirk Wood Bromley. The Russian Woodpecker is his first film.

2013 januárjában az ismert dokumentumfilmes, Laura Poitras már két éve dolgozott egy megfigyelésről szóló filmen, amikor kódolt e-mail üzeneteket kapott a Citizenfour álnév alatt író Edward Snowdentől. In January 2013, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras had already been working on a film about surveillance for two years when started receiving anonymous encrypted e-mails from Edward Snowden under the name “Citizenfour.” When Snowden revealed he was a high-level analyst driven to expose the massive surveillance of Americans by the NSA, Poitras persuaded him to let her film. Citizenfour gives audiences an unprecedented access to Poitras's and journalist Glenn Greenwald’s encounters with Snowden in Hong Kong, as he hands over classified documents providing evidence of mass indiscriminate and illegal invasions of privacy. Pointras’s film makes you feel the dangers of uncontrolled governmental surveillance – after seeing it, you will never think the same way about your phone, email, credit card, web browser, or profile, ever again. Citizenfour won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature this year.
