Membership Welcome to our newest TISED members: Professors Sara Mahshid, Alessandro Navarra, Lijun Sun, and Melanie Tetreault-Friend

Sara

Mahshid Prof. Mahshid's research focuses on engineering new approaches in

lab-on-chip devices via synergistically combining nanostructured materials with micro/nanofluidic sample delivery systems for rapid detection of pathogens in environmental and human samples. Her research has led to the successful implementation of the nanosurface fluidic devices for rapid and quantitative detection of E. coli and S. aureus in biological samples. Currently, she is exploring the application of proposed fluidic platforms for detection of parasites and bacteria in environmental samples for the purpose of controlling infections among vulnerable populations. Prof. Navarra's expertise lies in quantitative methods for industrial development projects, especially in mining and extractive metallurgy. He has an interest in multi-criteria optimization that balance opportunities and risks over different timeframes and has previously focused on adaptation of Monte-Carlo simulation, discrete event simulation, life cycle assessment, and other techniques in the context of multiphase industrial development projects.

Alessandro Navarra

Lijun

Sun Dr. Sun's research focuses on the area of smart transportation and

Melanie Tétreault-Friend

urban computing, developing innovative methodologies and applications to address efficiency, resilience, and sustainability issues in urban transportation systems. He is particularly interested in integrating advances in machine learning into human mobility modeling, agent-based simulation, and intelligent transportation systems.

Prof. Tétreault-Friend's research interests are in high temperature thermal energy conversion in sustainable and low-carbon energy technologies. Her most recent research focuses on enabling the next generation of efficient and reliable carbon-free molten salt energy technologies by developing accurate tools for predicting thermofluid behavior for systems design.

Our membership base now includes 63 tenure or tenure-track faculty members from the Faculty of Engineering at McGill University, see Appendix A: TISED Members. These members span across all departments and schools in McGill’s Faculty of Engineering and carry out important sustainability-related research projects, included in this report, see Appendix B: TISED Members’ Funded Research Projects. For our members’ publications from this past year, see Appendix C: TISED Members’ Publications.
