Message from TISED’s Director I am pleased to present the 2018-19 TISED Annual Report. My thanks and gratitude to all our TISED members and staff for their contributions towards another successful year. This past year, TISED has made considerable progress on many fronts. TISED has been working towards the creation of a Master’s Program in Sustainability in Engineering and Design. The proposed program has reached many milestones including final approval from the McGill Senate in February 2019. The proposal for the program is currently being reviewed internally and it should be submitted to external reviewers by the end of 2019. As part of the future Master’s Program, TISED has been continually developing its Sustainability in Engineering and Design (SEAD) courses. In the past year, a new SEAD course was debuted, SEAD 515: Climate Change Adaptation and Engineering Infrastructure, bringing the total up to three SEAD courses. More new SEAD courses are scheduled to be taught in the upcoming 2019-20 academic year. The latest edition of SEDTalks!, our highly successful communications skills-building training and workshop series for graduate students, was held in front of a full capacity audience in March at the McGill Faculty Club. With the support of our partners from McGill’s SKILLSETS and the SEDTalks! Selection Committee, the final event showcased research on sustainability of our three finalist ChangeMakers. Fourteen graduate students were trained through the program on communication skills to promote sustainability research. TISED continues to grow its research capacity. TISED Chair in Sustainable Engineering and Design, Dr. Laxmi Sushama, has worked hard on establishing a collaborative research program for climate change adaptation in the Arctic, while developing and delivering SEAD 515. TISED also received two Scholars-in-Residence, Drs. Joel Pedersen (University of Wisconsin – Madison) and Thilo Hofmann (University of Vienna) in early 2019. Both scholars worked intensively with TISED members towards two cutting-edge research workshops on technology for sustainable energy and sustainable agriculture. Finally, we want to stress the importance of our partnerships. Thanks to our collaboration with many partners, TISED is able to expand its impact. In the past year, we co-hosted outreach events and research programs with our McGill partners at the Bensadoun School of Retail Management, the Global Health Programs and Sustainability in Engineering at McGill. We also collaborated with our external partners Fondation 3E, Institut en Génie de l’Énergie Électrique and the Institut de l’énergie Trottier. We thank all our donors for their continued support of TISED and our mission. We are deeply grateful for their support to all of our initiatives. To a successful 2019-20 for all,

Partnerships The activities listed below serve as only a few examples of partnerships that TISED built this past year and that we consider an integral part of our foundation. We rely on strong partnerships among researchers, industry, and student groups. Through our ongoing partnership with IET (L’Institut de l’énergie Trottier), we collaborated on several projects and events, including the 6th Annual Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy and Design, and the 3rd annual IGEE Summer School, as well as on policy initiatives such as the Northeast Electricity Modelling Project. A scoping study report on the latter, led by TISED members and HEC Montreal, and with collaboration from IET and other partners, investigates the value of regional integration to decarbonize the Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC) power systems and was released at a public meeting on June 18, 2018 at HEC Montreal. The scoping study, titled A Decarbonized Northeast Electricity Sector: The Value of Regional Integration can be found through the following link here: (http://energie.hec.ca/wpcontent/uploads/2018/06/ScopingStudy_NortheastHydroModelling_13june2018.pdf). Our continuing partnership with the Fondation 3E enabled us to once again offer two for-credit courses, SEAD 510 Energy Analysis and FACC 511 Sustainable Urban Communities, in the 2018-2019 academic year (more information in the Education Section below). This was also our second year of collaboration with the Global Health Programs (GHP) in the Faculty of Medicine. Last year, we co-launched a seed grant initiative that funds interdisciplinary research in Engineering and Medicine and awarded two 18-month grants to research teams with TISED members. This year, TISED hosted a reception on November 19, 2018, for the TISED/GHP Innovative Solutions for Planetary Health Seed Grant Program where the two recipient teams presented their research findings (see the Research and Policy section for more information). In addition, TISED actively participated, sponsored, or advertised in these events organized by our partners: Circular Economy Conference Hosted by the Bensadoun School of Retail, McGill University IGEE Summer School Hosted by the Institut en Génie de l’Énergie Électrique Life Cycle Assessment: A Sustainable Discussion Hosted by SEAM (Sustainability in Engineering at McGill)
Annual Report 2018-2019
Research and Policy High-calibre researchers and practitioners play vital roles in our institute. The past year saw TISED make tremendous progress in growing its research activities and initiatives through the continued research work of the Trottier Chair in Sustainability in Engineering and Design, Dr. Laxmi Sushama, the research fruits generated from last year’s research funding program, the TISED/GHP Innovative Solutions for Planetary Health Seed Grants, and the creation of a second Faculty Scholar Award, the John M. Bishop and family Award. We have also continued to expand our expertise and network of researchers with the collaboration of two scholars-in-residence.
Innovative Solutions for Planetary Health Seed Grants On the 19th of November TISED and McGill Global Health Programs held a reception to highlight their seed grant pilot initiative to fund two joint interdisciplinary projects. The idea behind this program was to launch a collaboration that addressed the nexus between disease, rapid environmental degradation and climate change caused by unsustainable industrialization, urban growth and resource consumption practices. The aim of the grant was to fund interdisciplinary projects that combatted these challenges, and to foster dynamic partnerships between researchers in the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Engineering at McGill. The program was funded by generous donations by the Steinberg Fund for Interdisciplinary Global Health Research and a gift to TISED by benefactor Ram Panda. The proposals to be funded had to be a joint effort between a researcher in the Faculty of Engineering and one in the Faculty of Medicine. The chosen projects focused on Air Pollution and Water Pollution which are two major difficulties that developing nations face regarding development and environmental health. The reception started with presentations from the grant recipients detailing their research projects. Dr. Andrew G. Kirk, James McGill Professor and Department Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Dr. Mark Trifiro, Associate Professor, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism of the Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine gave a presentation on ‘High Speed, portable PCR system for rapid and in-situ water quality testing’. The research aim was to demonstrate an optically driven PCR (Polymer Chain Reaction) system that could provide a portable, low-cost and easy-to-use testing system for water samples and would give a response within five minutes. The current PCR machines in use to test water quality are often bulky and take over an hour to process the sample. Ultimately, this would be applied in testing for impure water in developing regions and greatly reduce incidents of water-borne bacterial infection and help boilwater advisories to be lifted earlier.
10
This was followed by a presentation by Dr. Jill Baumgartner, Assistant Professor and William Dawson Scholar in the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatics and Occupational Health in the Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Omid Rouhani, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering on ‘A pilot study of the acute cardiovascular impacts of exposure to traffic related air pollution and its oxidative potential among adults in urban Colombia.’ The aim of the research was to leverage existing infrastructure in urban Bucaramanga, Colombia and conduct a study that combines novel air pollution exposure metrics and biological monitoring in retired adults in order to investigate the most harmful particulate matter components and sources of traffic-related air pollution. The goal was to find the importance of different combustion and non-combustion sources of traffic pollution on human health to better facilitate the formulation of transportation infrastructure planning and policy to mitigate the effects health risks of wearing. Both the talks were deeply informative and interesting. The audience, consisting of TISED benefactors Lorne Trottier and Ram Panda, various professors from the faculties of Engineering and medicine, professionals from industry and a mix of graduate and undergraduate students, were thoroughly engaged by the presentations and the expert panel that followed. The panel consisted of experts from academia and industry and was in wide agreement over the usefulness of the program stating it had a tremendous impact. The event was closed with a networking cocktail reception in which students, professors, professionals and all others in attendance had a chance to discuss the contents of the research programs and make connections that could lead to further collaborations between the Faculties of Engineering and Medicine.
Annual Report 2018-2019
Trottier Chair in Sustainability in Engineering & Design May 1, 2018 – April 30, 2019 Research Climate change, induced by increased anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gases, is one of today’s greatest environmental threats. Changes are being experienced particularly intensely in the Arctic, where permafrost degradation associated with warmer temperatures, and increasing intensity, duration, and frequency of extreme events, are having significant impacts not only on the natural environment but also on the built environment, especially civil infrastructure, energy, mining, waste, wastewater, coastal, and offshore systems. The average temperature across the Arctic has risen at almost twice the rate as that of the rest of the world and future projections suggest continued higher increases in temperature. Thus, there is an urgent need to adapt the Canadian Arctic’s engineering and infrastructure systems to the changing climatic conditions to ensure sustainability. The Chair led a Letter of Intent (LOI) for an NSERC strategic Network – Canadian Arctic Responsive Engineering (CARE) Network. This proposed pan-Canadian effort is to study Arctic engineering systems in a holistic and responsive manner, and to innovate, develop, and adapt sustainable technologies and practices for the changing Arctic environment aimed at addressing six inter-connected objectives:
Development of high-resolution climate change projections and analysis for the Arctic region at engineering scales; Adaptation and innovation of technologies for cold regions surface and subsurface infrastructure in a changing climate; Development and application of sustainable and cost-efficient approaches, technologies and processes to treat and operate waste, water and wastewater systems in a changing climate; Improvement in the integrity of mining infrastructure via development and implementation of sustainable approaches to operate mines and mining equipment in a changing climate; Identification of the pathway to zero-emission energy strategies and technologies for the Canadian Arctic; and Development of tools and technology for climate resilient northern coastal and offshore infrastructure.
The LOI was selected by NSERC to go to the full proposal stage. The Chair led the proposal development, and hosted planning meetings at McGill, Yellowknife, Iqaluit and Whitehorse. The Chair developed partnerships with 60 organizations, including territorial, federal, provincial and municipal organizations, consulting firms and international organizations. Co-investigators from 10 Canadian universities were involved in the proposal. A workshop with international partners was held at McGill University by the Chair in December 2018, with the goal of developing a robust international strategy for the Net-
12
work. The meeting was attended by representatives from: (1) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) of the United States Army Corps of Engineers; (2) Institute of Northern Engineering, University of Alaska Fairbanks; (3) International Arctic Research Centre (IARC), University of Alaska at Fairbanks; (4) Icelandic Arctic Cooperation Network; (5) University of Iceland; (6) Iceland Construction Authority; (7) The Arctic University of Norway; (8) Arctic DTU and Arctic WASH Network of the Technical University of Denmark; (9) Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI). The application was submitted to NSERC in February 2019, following which a site visit took place in April 2019. Unfortunately, the proposal was not funded, albeit there were positive reviews from the reviewers and the site visit committee. The Chair is reviewing the possibility of submitting the proposal to other programs. Teaching The Chair developed two courses for the TISED Master’s program: SEAD 515: Climate Change Adaptation and Engineering Infrastructure This course focuses on climate-resilience and sustainability of engineering systems such as the built environment and engineering infrastructure in the context of a changing climate, possible mitigation and adaptation strategies and associated challenges and opportunities. The course reviews the basic principles that underpin the science of climate change; the role of global and regional climate models in predicting the behavior of the climate system in response to different forcing scenarios, and the use of climate model outputs in support of across scale climate-resilience of various engineering systems including infrastructure systems. SEAD 550: Decision Making for Sustainability in Engineering and Design. This course focusses on informed and practical decisions for bringing sustainability in engineering and design based on a range of tools, approaches and methodologies including multi-criteria decision-making, uncertainty analysis, game theory, sustainability metrics, life cycle analysis, and evaluation and impact assessment methodologies. The course covers fundamental requirements of a typical design problem, identifying stagedependent alternatives and options that promote sustainable solutions to engineering problems.
Outreach The Chair was one of the two tour speakers for the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) for the 2018-2019 period. The Chair gave presentations in east Canadian provinces, including Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador on ‘Climate-Engineering Dialogue in the Context of Arctic Engineering Systems’, which brought great visibility to TISED activities.

Event Highlight: Sixth Annual Trottier Symposium on sustainable engineering, energy and design The Sixth Annual Trottier Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy and Design was held at the Grand Auditorium of the Bibliothèque Nationale du Quebec on the evening of April 17, 2019. This year’s theme was climate change and the question of discussion was whether society passively suffers from its effects or does society reinvent itself to tackle the problem. The event was well attended as the Grand Auditorium was filled to its full capacity of almost 300 attendees. Two speakers were invited to first talk about the issue from their perspective in front of the full audience. This was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Normand Mousseau, the Academic Director of the Trottier Institute of Energy (Institut de l’énergie Trottier). SPEAKER | Valérie Masson-Delmotte Global Climatologist, Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group, Paris, France: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is tasked with studying the climate risks our societies face in the near and medium future. It collects scientific research from around the world and experts think about strategies to enable societies to adapt. IPCC publications are the main scientific input to international climate negotiations under the auspices of the UN. Ms. Masson-Delmotte, using slides from her group’s report, discusses climate change, its impacts, and how to mitigate it. SPEAKER | Mario Tremblay – Vice President, Corporate and Public Affairs – Fonds de solidarité FTQ: As a member of the Executive Committee, Mr. Tremblay is also Chair of the Sustainable Development Committee. Highly committed to a human-managed energy transition, with respect for the community and the workers, he has at heart the social justice issues inherent in the ongoing changes. He recently participated in COP24 in Poland, the official United Nations event dedicated to supporting the implementation of national commitments under the Paris Agreement. He also sat on the

Education and Training TISED educates future engineers, urban planners, and architects by offering training opportunities, new courses, integrating sustainability into programs, and enhancing education 'outside the classroom'. Teaching focuses on effective, practical, cutting-edge theories and strategies relevant to the development of sustainable engineers, architects, and planners' career paths. TISED offers a growing catalogue of interdisciplinary sustainability-focused courses, and a master’s program in Sustainability in Engineering and Design is under development.
Master’s Program: M.Eng in Sustainability in Engineering and Design TISED is excited to report that substantial progress has be made since the last annual report. The program has passed all the internal review steps at McGill and is almost ready to be submitted to the provincial government for approval. This review of a new degree program has been a long process requiring consultations at numerous stages. Building upon the original business case, the master’s program was first approved by the McGill Faculty of Engineering in May 2018. Over the summer, TISED continued working on building up the internal proposal by obtaining final approval of future courses and setting up the program’s support infrastructure. The program was approved by the Council of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (CGPS) in September 2018. Progress on the program has increased as we get closer to our goal. A new master’s program manager, Gary Ng, was hired in October 2018 to finish the work on the 300plus page proposal to the Government of Quebec. The proposed program and budget were endorsed by the APC Subcommittee on Courses and Teaching Programs (SCTP) in January 2019. In quick succession, the Academic Policy Committee (APC) of the McGill Senate and then the full McGill Senate gave final approval to the sustainability program in February 2019. Now we are working on obtaining physical resources for the program and the final preparation of the document that will be sent out to the Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire (BCI) and to the Québec Ministère de l’éducation et de l’enseignement supérieur. The goal is to deliver the submission to the BCI and the Quebec Government by the end of summer 2019 for review in the fall of 2019.
TISED Course Offerings
In 2018-2019, TISED offered four courses to graduate and upper-level undergraduate (U3) students in the Faculty of Engineering. Three of these courses were returning courses: ‘Energy Analysis’, ‘Sustainable Urban Communities’, and ‘Life Cycle-Based Environmental Footprinting’. ‘Climate Change Adaptation and Engineering Infrastructure’, was offered for the first time this year, and more new courses are planned for the upcoming academic year. These courses will eventually become part of the master’s program. TISED promotes interdisciplinary education through its course offerings, seeking to attract students across academic units. Students from all seven Faculty of Engineering
28
departments and schools, as well as students from Bioresource Engineering in the Faculty of Science and students from outside McGill, have enrolled in TISED courses.
Energy Analysis “Energy Analysis”, now listed in the McGill course catalog as SEAD 510, was offered again by TISED in Fall 2018, with generous sponsorship from the Fondation 3E to promote energy education and literacy. Professor Jeffrey Bergthorson, TISED Associate Director and Panda Faculty Scholar, taught this course for the third consecutive year and continues to inspire his students again. Dr. Bergthorson tweaks his course slightly each year to improve the experience for his students. The course lays out the economic and environmental challenges that our society faces due to our rapid consumption of fossil fuels. Students are asked to assess their energy use and environmental footprint and quickly recognize that the challenge to be sustainable is difficult for all. The course provides students with the knowledge and problem-analysis skills to investigate different solutions for primary clean electricity generation, transport, and backup power generation. To identify and assess potential clean energy options, the course covers the key aspects of energy literacy, including fundamental thermodynamics, energy concepts, and various energy metrics. Students critically analyze and discuss traditional and alternative energy and power systems. For their final projects, students assess why their proposed clean energy solutions are, or are not, viable commercial options. The analysis of alternative power systems uses a multidisciplinary and integrated design approach that includes life-cycle and economic analyses. In this course, students develop their ability to think critically, apply rigorous methodology to complex design problems, and supplement technical design with economic analysis.
By the end of the course, students learn about:
Energy: now and in future Energy metrics Alternative Primary Power-Generation Systems Alternative Energy-Storage and Secondary Power-Generation Critical Analysis and Application of Theory
Sustainable Urban Communities “Sustainable Urban Communities” (listed as FACC 511: Selected topics in the Faculty of Engineering) is sponsored by Fondation 3E and was offered by TISED again in Winter 2018. The course is a logical sequel to the “Energy Analysis” course above. It was Professor Michael Jemtrud’s first time teaching the course. Prof. Jemtrud is a TISED member from the School of Architecture. The course addresses sustainable design theory and applications in the built environment with students from a variety of fields (architecture, urban planning, engineering, sociology, environmental studies, economics, and international studies). Architecture provides the focus for environmental, socio-cultural and economic issues. The course investigates a holistic interpretation of sustainability and resilience by interrogating the
Annual Report 2018-2019
potential of architecture and urban design to affect real change in environmental practice.
By the end of the course, students learned how to:
Paraphrase ideas and writing of scholars, scientists, architects, and urbanists in writing synoptic essays of assigned theoretical texts Enact critical thinking skills through discussion, writing, and presentations by acquiring a historical and theoretical foundation of issues addressed in the course Discuss on a knowledgeable level the key issues facing sustainable design practices relative to course context and theoretical framework Engage in cross-disciplinary discourse with colleagues Engage in research-through-design methodologies as a critical mode of inquiry
Life Cycle-Based Environmental Footprinting “Life Cycle-Based Environmental Footprinting” (listed as SEAD 520 was offered by TISED for the second time in Winter 2019 and taught by Anne-Marie Boulay. Rooted in engineering and looking at the entire life cycle (from cradle to grave), environmental footprints quantify potential environmental impacts associated with the use of a product, process or service. The course covers the concept of footprint and the different types of footprints which have emerged over time, leading to the lifecycle based environmental footprints: carbon footprint, water footprint, and a complete environmental life-cycle analysis (LCA). The course also explores the political applications and implications of the environmental footprints and the related ISO standards. Environmental footprint communication is also covered, including labels, product declaration, and the different rules that apply. Finally, the concept of planetary boundaries and its link with environmental footprints is introduced.
By the end of the course, students learned to:
Understand such essential concepts as life cycle, inventory, impact assessment, water footprint, carbon footprint Be able to understand and assess the relevance of environmental information communicated in a paper, label or website Understand the implications that environmental information can have on policies and the directions in which international governance may be going Understand the key concepts associated with sustainable products and manufacturing Reflect on the impacts of his/her decisions as both an engineer and consumer
Climate Change Adaptation and Engineering Infrastructure SEAD 515 is the latest addition to the list of SEAD courses offered by TISED. This course focuses on Climate Change Adaptation and Engineering Infrastructure and is being taught by our Trottier Chair Prof. Laxmi Sushama. With the growing challenge of climate change faced by everyone around the world, understanding the durability and sustainability of engineering systems and infrastructure
30

Education highlight: SEDTALKS! In 2016, TISED launched ‘SEDTalks!’, a platform for student researchers to share their sustainability research, develop professional skills in public-speaking and communication, expand their academic and industrial networks, and work with other researchers to make an impact on sustainability through engineering and design. In the pilot program, three of the student applicants were selected to receive specialized training. In 2018-2019, we made changes to SEDTalks and increased the number of students benefitting from the program. Fifteen graduate students, all working on sustainability-related research in different disciplines across the Faculty of Engineering, applied to the program and participated in a series of training sessions aimed at improving their research presentation skills. The applicants were then invited to participate in a mock 3-minute thesis competition in front of a Selection Committee panel. The competition required students to present their research in non-technical terms. From these competitors, three were selected by the Committee to move on to the second phase of the SEDTalks program and receive personalized and intensive training. The three selected students, or ‘ChangeMakers’, turned their 3minute thesis competition presentations into 18 minute ‘SEDTalks’. The ChangeMakers worked with trainers, who included professional coaches from Skillsets and TISED Associate Director Jeff Bergthorson, to develop talks that would showcase their great work on sustainability and reach a diverse audience. The program culminated with an event where each ChangeMaker gave an engaging talk about their sustainability-related research to a captivated audience, followed by a networking cocktail. Invited guests included industry professionals, faculty members, students, alumni, and others. Photo Credit: Owen Egan In addition to training, the ChangeMakers receive in-laboratory portraits, networking materials, and a bursary award.

IGEE Summer School 2018 TISED is a regular sponsor of the IGEE Summer School since its debut in 2016. This year, the 3rd edition of the event was held on May 7-9, 2018 in the Lorne M. Trottier Building on McGill’s downtown campus. Since the event was held at McGill, TISED gave an in-kind contribution of logistical support and manpower to help in the setup of the event. The IGEE, or L’ Institut en Génie de l’Énergie Électrique, was created in 2001 as a partnership between Hydro-Quebec, industry members, and university institutions to create high-quality training programs in the field of electrical energy engineering. The original mission of the IGEE was to have such programs that would both meet the needs of the industry and would facilitate research collaboration between universities by pooling their resources in this field. IGEE currently offers a program with a concentration in Power Engineering that consists of ten courses taught at the four Montreal-area universities. The IGEE Summer School is a promotional tool that is designed to attract students to the main IGEE program. Each year, the IGEE Summer School presents a different aspect of electrical energy engineering and tries to simplify the technical aspects of the topic for its students who are currently enrolled in undergraduate engineering programs, including students from McGill Engineering. This year, the focus was on the role of buildings in the sustainable development and decarbonisation of society. Over the three days of the Summer School, the planned activities aim to develop among the students an appreciation of the technological challenges involved in the design and engineering of the energy systems that are found in our buildings. Several TISED members are participants of this year’s edition of the Summer School. As the host institution, Dr. Jim Nicell, the Dean of McGill’s Faculty of Engineering, gave the welcoming speech to participants on the first morning. The entire three-day event ran smoothly afterwards under the supervision of Dr. François Bouffard (Electrical Engineering), the main organizer and moderator of multiple panels and round table discussions at IGEE Summer School 2018. Professors Michael Jemtrud and Nik Luka, both from the School of Architecture, also participated in multiple round table talks on topics such as the design of highperformance buildings and the human being at the centre of high-performance buildings. Other members of the McGill sustainability community also participated at the Summer School 2018. Michael Jemtrud was joined by other members of TeamMTL, a joint McGillConcordia group of engineering and architecture students, who talked about the experience of designing and building a solar house in preparation for their upcoming Solar Decathlon China 2018 competition starting in July 2018. Jérôme Conraud and Philippe St-Jean, from McGill’s Facilities Management and Ancillary Services, presented a case study of the renovations of the McGill School of Environment.
