Message from TISED’s Director Welcome to our 2017-2018 Annual Report! Thank you to our TISED members and staff for all their contributions over the past year.

TISED’s research capacity has been significantly enhanced by our new Endowed Chair, Dr. Laxmi Sushama. As the Trottier Chair in Sustainable Engineering and Design, Dr. Sushama has been actively coordinating several research initiatives with TISED members and sustainability researchers across campus, such as our partners at the McGill Sustainability Systems Initiatives (MSSI). Our research capacity was further enhanced by our Scholars-in-Residence Dr. Stefan Grimberg and Dr. Pedro Alvarez. They were engaged in several activities at TISED, and most notably offered two thought provoking and successful research workshops: Quebec’s Resource Recovery Potential in June 2017, and Opportunities and Challenges for Advanced Materials in Water Treatment and Reuse: Targeting Contaminants in August 2017. These workshops brought together distinguished researchers and experts from industry and government to advance emerging technological and policy solutions for sustainability.

We also hosted the 5th Annual Trottier Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy and Design in April. This year’s theme, Planning for Resiliency in the Face of Climate Change, brought in leading speakers from academia, industry, and government, and drew in hundreds of interested researchers, students, and professionals.

In our continuing committement to train and educate students, we offered three forcredit courses for graduate and upper-level undergraduate students (Energy Analysis, Sustainable Urban Communities, and Life Cycle-Based Environmental Footprinting) and ran our SEDTalks program to train graduate students in communicating their sustainability-related research to the public. Thank you to the TISED Academic Committee for their work on course and educational program development, and thank you to the SEDTalks Selection Committee for their contributions to the program.

Thank you to all our donors for their continued support of TISED and our mission. This year we received major gifts from John M. Bishop and family and Ram Panda to offer a new Faculty Scholar Award and fund innovative and interdisciplinary research on Planetary Health, respectively.

Year-in-Review Advancing Scholarly Research Excellence: With the added expertise of Dr. Laxmi Sushama, TISED’s new Trottier Chair in Sustainability in Engineering and Design, TISED has been able to expand its research capacity and priority research areas. Dr. Sushama’s expertise, the research interests of many TISED members, and the theme of this year’s Annual Trottier Symposium on Planning for Resiliency in the Face of Climate Change, led TISED to add ‘Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience’ to its priority research areas.

Supporting Intellectual Leadership: A generous donation from John M. Bishop and his family created the John M. Bishop and family Faculty Scholar Award in Sustainability in Engineering and Design. The appointment will go to a TISED member with an outstanding track record in research and scholarly activities. In addition, alumnus Ram Panda continued his generous financial support of TISED’s Panda Faculty Scholar in Sustainability in Engineering and Design. The awards help financially support the Scholar’s doctoral students.

Furthering Interdisciplinary Research and Policy Impact: TISED and the Global Health Program (GHP, Faculty of Medicine) joined forces to introduce the “TISED/GHP Innovative Solutions for Planetary Health Seed Grants” program, with funding from Ram Panda and the Steinberg Fund for Interdisciplinary Global Health Research. The grants facilitate collaboration between faculty members in Engineering and Medicine working on new and innovative research that advances sustainability, solutions to global environmental issues, and improving planetary health.

TISED further extended our commitment to collaborative research efforts through our continued investment in our Scholar-in-Residence program and Research Workshop Program. These programs bring renowned researchers and scholars from around the globe to share and enrich TISED’s and the Faculty of Engineering’s research and teaching endeavours. Our invited scholars conducted collaborative research with TISED members and other faculty that was presented in seminars and research workshops, taught in courses, and interacted closely with graduate and post-grad researchers.

Encouraging Student Research and Training: TISED was active in sponsoring events, including the McGill Engineering Research Showcase (MERS), and hosting the poster showcases integrated into our Research Workshop Programs and Annual Trottier Symposium, featuring research from students in the Faculty of Engineering. TISED provided funding and awards for 21 SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering) projects, and funding to graduate students through the TISED MEDA Fellowships and the Faculty Scholar Awards.

TISED offered sustainability-related courses to students in the Faculty of Engineering.

“Energy Analysis” in Fall 2017, and “Sustainable Urban Communities” and “Life CycleBased Environmental Footprinting” in Winter 2018, were designed to lay out and exam-

ine existing challenges relating to sustainability and provide the knowledge and problem-solving skills to enable students to engineer comprehensive solutions. The first two courses were offered thanks to financial support from Fondation 3E. TISED also expanded the ‘SEDTalks!’ program to benefit more students. SEDTalks is a training program and platform for graduate students to learn valuable communication skills and share their sustainability-related research with academia, industrial partners, and the public. This year we allowed all of the students who applied to SEDTalks to take part in professional coaching sessions. Of these students, three finalists received personalized training and presented their research to academic and industrial participants.

Promoting Public Education and Stakeholder Engagement: The electricity system of the provinces and states of the Northeastern region of North America — known as the Northeastern Power Coordinating Council or NPCC — can play a significant role in decarbonizing the region, given the abundant wind power resources and Quebec’s vast hydro system. Researchers from TISED, in collaboration with IET (l’Institut de l'énergie Trottier)and HEC Montréal, asked the question: What would be the benefits of regional power system integration for deep decarbonization of the NPCC in the presence of large hydropower? The team partnered with stakeholders from Hydro-Québec, Nergica, Ouranos, and the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory to start answering this question. A first report detailing the results of the project will be released in June 2018 at a large public launch event held at HEC Montréal.

With its partner IET, TISED hosted the Fifth Annual Trottier Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy and Design on the theme Planning for Resilience in the Face of Climate Change. The flagship event brought in expert speakers on ‘Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience’, TISED’s newest priority research area. We welcomed two local policymakers, the mayors of the St-Laurent and Verdun boroughs, as well as industry professionals in various fields, students from different disciplines, and members of the general public. It was also an opportunity to showcase TISED’s research, student research posters, and the Solar Decathlon project co-sponsored by TISED, provide volunteering opportunities for students, and engage stakeholders.

TISED’s Research Workshop Program further promoted meaningful public and stakeholder engagement on sustainability issues. Collaborating with our partners, students, international experts, and local decision-makers is beneficial in further developing a culture and community of sustainability-minded people while also influencing policy and engaging the public.

Staff Subhasis Ghoshal, Director

Subhasis Ghoshal is a Professor in Civil Engineering and is a respected authority on water quality, nano- and bio- technologies for soil and groundwater remediation, and on the sustainable use of nanomaterials. Professor Ghoshal joined McGill University after completing his Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan. He served as McGill's Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in the Faculty of Engineering from 2006 to 2012. Professor Ghoshal has been the Director of TISED since 2013.

Laxmi Sushama, Trottier Chair in Sustainable Engineering and Design

Laxmi Sushama is a Professor of Civil Engineering and the Trottier Chair in Sustainable Engineering and Design since 2017. Her research focuses on the climate-sustainability nexus with a special emphasis on urban environments, climate resilience of infrastructure, and sustainability in engineering and design. Prof. Sushama is also the principal investigator for the NSERC-funded Canadian Network for Regional Climate and Weather Processes and works closely with federal labs such as Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Jeffrey Bergthorson, Associate Director

Jeffrey Bergthorson is an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at McGill University, where he leads the Alternative Fuels Laboratory. As the Panda Faculty Scholar in Sustainability in Engineering and a William Dawson Scholar, he leads a team conducting research on the combustion and emissions properties of alternative and sustainable fuels and the impact of these properties on their performance in current and future engine technologies. Professor Bergthorson became the Associate Director of TISED in 2016.

Stéfanie Kibsey, Interim Manager

Specializing in advancing sustainability research, education, and industry best practices, Stéfanie joined TISED as interim manager in 2017. She holds a Bachelor degree from McGill University and an interdisciplinary Master of Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo. Stéfanie is a published author and editor on sustainable investing, financial systems, and real estate, and her interests include environmental change, water, and the science-practicepolicy interface.

Lauren Penney, Manager

Lauren holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Public Policy and Public Administration and, for over ten years, she has worked for various community groups, government agencies, and universities.

Lauren has been TISED’s Manager since 2013, coupling her experience in program design and stakeholder consultation with applied strategic communications, marketing, and project management.

David Harlander, Academic Project Manager

David holds a Master's of Architecture from the University of British Columbia and a post-professional Master's in Urban Design and Housing from McGill University. He is a recipient of the "Louis B. Magil Fellowship in Housing” and the "Norbert Schoenauer / David Farley Fellowship in Architecture”. His research explores housing in northern Canada. He joined TISED as an academic project manager in 2017, assisting in the development of the Masters in Sustainable Engineering & Design program.

Irene Toffolo, Administrative Coordinator

Irene is an administrative professional with more than 15 years of experience in general administration, including coordination, logistics, customer services, public relations and finance. Irene holds a BA in Sociology from Concordia University and a Certificate in Public Relations Management from McGill University.

Our membership base now includes 63 tenure or tenure-track faculty members from the Faculty of Engineering at McGill University, see Appendix A: TISED Members. These members span across all departments and schools in McGill’s Faculty of Engineering and carry out important sustainability-related research projects, included in this report, see Appendix B: TISED Members’ Funded Research Projects. For our members’ publications from this past year, see Appendix C: TISED Members’ Publications.

TISED Members’ Meetings TISED held Members’ Meetings in October 2017 and February 2018. Members took the opportunity to share their input regarding TISED activities and priorities for the upcoming year. For instance, we discussed TISED’s plans for a master’s program in sustainability and for increasing TISED’s capacity for policy-related research. We encouraged our members to apply for and participate in our Scholars-in-Residence and Research Workshop programs. We received feedback on past and upcoming TISED events and activities, including SEDTalks and the Annual Trottier Symposium. And we informed our members of the call for applications for the TISED/GHP Innovative Solutions for Planetary Health Seed Grants, as there was much interest in this innovative funding program.

Mission & Goals TISED’s Mission

The Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED)’s mission is to produce innovative engineering and design solutions and intellectual capacity that enables us to protect and nurture Earth and its inhabitants to meet the needs of current and future generations.

TISED’s Goals    

Catalyze interdisciplinary and inter-institutional research that provides solutions to local and global sustainability challenges Inform and advance public policy with governments, industry and other organizations, particularly as relating to engineered and designed systems Educate current and future generations of engineers, urban planners and architects to be leaders in sustainability in their professions Create and participate in forums for sustainability through inspired critical thinking and action by engaging the university community, decision-makers, and the public

Governance TISED creates ad hoc committees and working groups established for project and event-specific initiatives. We’ve also benefited from continual input from the Dean of Engineering, our benefactors, and our professoriate across the University on various initiatives and programming. TISED has also been working towards establishing a permanent governance structure, including a Board of Directors, to guide the strategic direction of TISED and approve the operations of the Institute. The Board will include representation from key internal and external stakeholder groups.

Partnerships The activities listed below serve as only a few examples of partnerships that TISED built this past year and that we consider an integral part of our foundation. We rely on strong partnerships among researchers, industry, and student groups.

Through our ongoing partnership with IET (L’Institue de l’énergie Trottier), we collaborated on a number of projects and events, including our Annual Symposium, the IGEE Summer School, and policy initiatives such as the Northeast Electricity Modelling Project.

A scoping study report on the latter, led by TISED members and HEC Montreal, and with collaboration from IET and other partners, investigates the value of regional integration to decarbonize the Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC) power systems and will be released in June 2018.

Our continuing partnership with the Fondation 3E enabled us to once again offer two for-credit courses in the 2017-2018 academic year (more information in the Education Section below).

This year we also collaborated with the Global Health Program (GHP) in the Faculty of Medicine to launch a seed grant initiative that funds interdisciplinary research in Engineering and Medicine (more about the TISED/GHP Innovative Solutions for Planetary Health Seed Grants in the Research Section below).

In addition, TISED actively participated, sponsored, or advertised in these events organized by our partners: EWB-Week (Engineers without Borders Week) hosted by Engineers Without Borders McGill Chapter IGEE Summer School 2018 hosted by IGEE (Institut en génie de l'énergie électrique) McGill Engineering Research Showcase hosted by McGill’s Faculty of Engineering McGill Open House hosted by McGill University Meetings and Events of the Northeast Power Coordinating Council co-hosted by TISED, IET (Institue de l’énergie Trottier), HEC Energie, and other partners

Research and Policy High-calibre researchers and practitioners play vital roles in our institute. The past year saw TISED make tremendous progress in growing its research activities and initiatives through the appointment of a new endowed Chair, a new research funding program, and a new Faculty Scholar Award. We’ve also continued to expand our expertise and network of researchers with the collaboration of two scholars-in-residence and a visiting scholar.

Innovative Solutions for Planetary Health Seed Grants

TISED partnered with the Faculty of Medicine’s Global Health Program (GHP) to create a new funding initiative for interdisciplinary research. Jointly funded by the Steinberg Fund for Interdisciplinary Global Health Research and a gift to TISED from our benefactor Ram Panda, the TISED/GHP Innovative Solutions for Planetary Health Seed Grants program provides seed funding for research at the interface of global health and sustainable development. Eligible research project proposals must be led by one researcher from the Faculty of Medicine and one researcher from the Faculty of Engineering. The program seeks to fund bold and high-risk research projects at the nexus between disease, rapid environmental degradation and climate change.

Two 18-month grants of $75,000 and $100,000 were awarded to one project on water pollution and another on air pollution, respectively:

Trottier Chair in Sustainability in Engineering & Design The endowed Trottier Chair in Sustainability in Engineering and Design plays a critical role in advancing TISED’s goals through their leadership in research, teaching, and outreach. Chairs are internationally recognized scholars who have excellent track records of collaborative research and policy insights, helping position TISED as a leading institute and encouraging collaboration with others at our university and beyond.

Dr. Laxmi Sushama assumed the the Trottier Chair in Sustainable Engineering and Design position in August 2017, and her appointment has propelled TISED’s research to a new echelon of public influence. Dr. Sushama is a leading expert on climate change modelling, urban environments, infrastructure, climate resilience, and informed climate change planning.

She also teaches in the department of Civil Engineering.

Conducting first-rate climate research, Dr. Sushama previously held a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Regional Climate Modeling, leveraging her research excellence in engineering hydrology, water resources, engineering climate science and earth systems dynamics, at the Centre ESCER (Centre pour l'étude et la simulation du climat à l'échelle régionale). She was an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQÀM). Prior to that, Dr. Sushama worked at Ouranos Consortium on Regional Climatology and Adaptation to Climate Change in Montreal as a climate specialist, and at UQÀM as a research associate and post-doctoral fellow in the area of regional climate modelling with an emphasis on climate change and the regional hydrologic cycle. Before moving to Canada, she was a post- doctoral fellow in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, soon after completing her PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Melbourne, Australia.

The adjacent figure is an example of Dr. Sushama’s research on the weather and climate factors contributing to the 2017 Montreal flood, performed with the Canadian Regional Climate Model. The figure shows that events such as the precipitation accumulation over the Ottawa River Basin that led to the Montreal flood are between two and three times more likely to occur in the present-day climate than in the pre-industrial climate.

Faculty Scholar Awards

TISED members are eligible to apply for the Faculty Scholar Awards, which are funded by our generous donors. The Faculty Scholar Awards support research in sustainability and enrich the teaching and research programs launched by TISED; partly by funding the Scholar’s doctoral students’ research, and partly by providing opportunities for outreach and policy work within the Institute.

The Panda Faculty Scholar Award in Sustainability in Engineering and Design was established through an endowed gift to the Faculty of Engineering from alumnus Ram Panda.

TISED Associate Director Jeffrey Bergthorson held the appointment from Jan 2015 to December 2017, and his appointment was renewed for another three year term ending December 2020.

A call for applications to the John M. Bishop and family Faculty Scholar Award in Sustainability in Engineering and Design, created by a gift from John M. Bishop and his family and intended for research that will reduce society’s dependency on nonrenewable resources, was recently launched for the first time; an announcement of the new appointment will be made in the next fiscal year.

Scholars-in-Residence Program & Visiting Professors

Leading scholars around the world apply to TISED to conduct collaborative research with TISED members through our Scholars-in-Residence Program. During their residency, the Scholars also organize research workshops focusing on policy, deliver public and course lectures, and prepare publications to advance sustainability policy.

In 2017-2018, Dr. Pedro Alvarez of Rice University participated in a six-month residency with TISED. Dr. Alvarez researches environmental applications and implications of nanotechnology, water treatment and reuse, and antibiotic resistance control. TISED also hosted Dr. Stefan Grimberg of Clarkson University until June 2017.

In addition, TISED welcomes visiting professors from universities around the world. TISED invited Dr. Mark O’Malley, a professor from University College Dublin, as a Flaherty Visiting Professor, an award created by the Ireland Canada University Foundation on a competitive basis. Dr. O’Malley worked alongside TISED members during the summer of 2017.

Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Pedro Alvarez, Professor, Rice University In residence at TISED from May 2017 to October 2017

Dr. Pedro J.J. Alvarez is the George R. Brown Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University, where he also serves as Director of the NSF ERC on Nanotechnology-Enabled Water Treatment (NEWT). His research interests include bioremediation, fate and transport of toxic chemicals, water footprint of biofuels, water treatment and reuse, antibiotic resistance control, and environmental implications and applications of nanotechnology.

Dr. Alvarez is a McGill alumnus, having received a B. Eng. Degree in Civil Engineering from McGill University.

He also obtained MS and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan. He is the 2012 Clarke Prize laureate (commonly known as the American Nobel Prize for Water) and also won the 2014 AAEES Grand Prize for Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science. Dr. Alvarez is a Fellow of AAAS, ASCE, IWA, WEF and the Leopold Leadership Foundation, and a founding member of the Nicaraguan Academy of Sciences. He serves as Associate Editor of Environmental Science and Technology, and as honorary professor at Nankai University in Tianjin and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China, and as adjunct professor at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Florianopolis, Brazil; he recently completed service on the EPA’s Science Advisory Board.

During his time as a Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Alvarez worked with TISED on two interrelated areas of research: safe and sustainable nanotechnology, and the resilience of water systems for safe and sustainable water supplies. He also hosted a Research Workshop Program on “Opportunities and Challenges for Advanced Materials in Water Treatment and Reuse: Targeting Contaminants”, more information below.

Dr. Alvarez also gave a public lecture on the “Proliferation and Control of Multi-Drug Resistant 'Superbugs' in Municipal Wastewater Treatment” on September 18th 2017. In his lecture, Dr. Alvarez discussed how antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) pose an imminent threat to global health, and wastewater treatment plants may serve as breeding grounds and point sources for their dissemination. He examined the behaviour and replication of ARBs, and explored novel approaches to mitigate their spread.

Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Stefan Grimberg, Professor, Clarkson University In residence at TISED from January 2017 to June 2017

Anaerobic digestion researcher Dr. Stefan Grimberg collaborated with TISED and others to study the environmental, economic and associated policy implications of diverting source-separated organic waste from landfills to wastewater treatment plants. Additionally, Dr. Grimberg worked with TISED to assess and develop policies that minimize impact on the environment while realizing their energy and nutrient recovery potential.

Dr. Grimberg is a Professor and former Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Clarkson University. He has published more than 50 journal articles, conference proceedings, and reports and has delivered more than 90 professional talks at academic conferences or universities around the world. Dr. Grimberg has been the investigator on research grants from the National Science Foundation, United States Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy, NYSERDA and other funding agencies. His research most recently has focused on anaerobic digestion of agricultural or other high-strength wastes for the generation of energy. In particular, his research group investigated the anaerobic digestion of sand-laden dairy manure for a midsize dairy farm in Northern New York. Dr. Grimberg also has been actively involved in the New York Water Environment Association as the Chair of the university committee and the Advisor to student chapters.

At a TISED seminar in June 2017, Dr. Grimberg spoke about organic solid and municipal waste, including how share resource recovery processes can lead to a more circular resource economy, reducing environmental impact and using resources from waste.

More on the Research Workshop Program, including the workshop on Quebec’s Resource Recovery Potential hosted by Dr. Grimberg, is described below.

Visiting Professor Dr. Mark O’Malley, Professor, University College Dublin James M. Flaherty Visiting Professorship Visiting from April to September 2017

Dr. Mark O’Malley, a recognized world authority in Energy System Integration (ESI) and Grid Integration of Renewable Energy, assumed a James M. Flaherty Visiting Professorship hosted at TISED. The Professorship was made possible with support and an inkind contribution from TISED, and was awarded to Dr. O’Malley and TISED by the Ireland Canada University Foundation (ICUF). Dr. O’Malley’s expertise, which has already informed ESI programs in Europe, the United States, and China, will help Quebec’s energy sector make a smooth transition to renewable energy.

Dr. O’Malley is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at University College Dublin and the founding Director of the Electricity Research Centre, a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, industry-supported research activity. He is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and has received two Fulbright Fellowships. He has active research collaborations in the United States (Department of Energy National Renewable Energy Laboratory) and China (Tsinghua University and State Grid China) and is Director and Cofounder of the International Institute for Energy Systems Integration and Coordinator of the European Energy Research Alliance Joint Programme in Energy Systems Integration.

From April to September 2017, Dr. O’Malley worked closely with TISED members Dr. François Bouffard and Dr. Geza Joos and other Canadian experts to research topics around Electricity Systems Integration (ESI). TISED facilitating the research collaborations, and hosted a one‐week intensive course with leading energy institutions as well as an ‘ICUF James M. Flaherty Lecture’ called “Energy Systems Integration: a multidisciplinary global imperative for a low carbon society”.

Research Workshop Program Our Research Workshop Program (RWP) facilitates discussions on cutting-edge advances in technology and design as well as policy frameworks and interventions required to advance sustainability.

Each RWP includes a specialized research workshop and a public seminar. During the research workshop, focussed discussions support the development of a timely and topical publication and/or a research funding proposal. The public seminar features external and McGill speakers with distinguished research track-records.

TISED invites its members to submit RWP proposals aligned with their research areas. TISED Scholars-in-Residence also deliver a RWP in collaboration with a group of TISED members and external participants.

Event Highlight: Annual Trottier Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy and Design How can our cities be more resilient to climate change? What is resilience, and how do we achieve it? Engineering and design for sustainability are an essential part of a multi-faceted response to climate change particularly in urban centres, which includes robust solutions for increasing our resiliency in the face of extreme weather events, changing our water management practices, or adapting our cities and infrastructure to an unpredictable future.

Planning for Resiliency in the Face of Climate Change was the theme of the 5th Annual Trottier Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy, and Design, hosted by TISED on April 4th and 5th 2018. The symposium featured 5 speakers over two evenings who presented the latest research and solutions for making our cities, buildings, and infrastructure resilient to the threats of climate change. The symposium was also an opportunity for graduate students to display posters of their sustainability-related research and projects, and for other students to volunteer with event logistics. The event attracted our largest audience yet!

Hosted by TISED and our partner IET (Institut de l'ĂŠnergie Trottier) on alternate years and made possible by a generous gift from the Lorne Trottier Family Foundation, the symposium is a forum for students, professors, government and industry professionals to connect with the general public on advancements for sustainability through engineering and design.

Symposium Speakers & Presentations Guy Nordenson, Professor of Structural Engineering and Architecture, Princeton University School of Architecture CLIMATE ADAPTATION BY DESIGN Guy Nordenson was the structural engineer for the Santa Fe Opera House, the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC and over 200 other projects. He was Commissioner of the NYC Public Design Commission and is a member of the NYC Panel on Climate Change.

Pippa Brashear, Director of Planning and Resilience, SCAPE DESIGNING FOR RESILIENCE: ECOLOGY + ENGINEERING + ENGAGEMENT Translating the ideas of resilience into realizable actions and implementable designs is challenging. Ms. Brashear’s presentation explores the process taken by an innovative coastal resilience project and the lessons learned about integrating and implementing physical, ecological, and social resilience.

Alan De Sousa, Borough Mayor of St-Laurent CHARTING A COURSE TO RESILIENCE IN MONTREAL A member of the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities network, Montreal is charting a course to resilience by anticipating, preventing and adapting to the problems and risks that could affect all Montrealers.

Karen Seto, Professor of Geography and Urbanization Science, Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies HOTTER, WETTER, DRIER: GLOBAL TRENDS IN URBANIZATION AND CHALLENGES FOR CLIMATE RESILIENCE The overarching objective of Dr. Seto’s research is to understand how urbanization will affect the planet. She highlights extreme climate events—bomb cyclones, wildfires, floods, droughts—and how future urbanization may increase risk and vulnerability to these hazards.

Philippe Gourbesville, Professor Hydroinformatics and Water Engineering, University of Nice Sophia Antipolis RESILIENCE: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR CITIES The increasing size of cities and vulnerability to extreme weather requires engineers to rethink current concepts and approaches. Dr. Gourbesville addresses a diversity of situations and resilience solutions for engineering and design.

Symposium’s Impact on Research, Policy, and Outreach The symposium began by outlining climate change as a ‘wicked problem’ - one that is difficult to solve because of its complexity, unpredictability, and the need to constantly find new, systems-level solutions to address it.

The five speakers listed on the previous page presented us with both a theoretical understanding of the nature of climate change resilience, as well as concrete solutions.

We were taken on a trip through time to ancient civilizations that, through the evidence left in their archaeological record, were shown to have developed early climate resilient solutions in the world’s first urban areas. As modern urban centres do not exist in isolation but as parts of larger complex systems, we were introduced to the concept of systems thinking as a paradigm on which to build resilience-based solutions. We were also made aware of the need to understand human behavior as we develop and design technological solutions, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary collaborations to build resilience.

The speakers described in detail the resilience projects they had led and been a part of, including major coastal resilience projects in New York City, other resilient infrastructure projects around the United States, local resilience projects in Montreal, modelling urbanization trends, and modelling climate change-related flood risks. The above infrastructure and modelling projects were described in depth, from both the theoretical and practical perspectives.

While the solutions discussed at the symposium are unique, they all have one key point in common: they require collaborative, interdisciplinary efforts between different stakeholders, including researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and the public. They require input from engineers, architects, urban planners, geographers, ecologists, economists, social scientists, the public and private sectors, and decision-makers at every level of government, among others.

Climate change may be a global, wicked problem, but the symposium is evidence that our understanding of climate change is growing, the science-policy gap is closing, and bold new resilience-based solutions are being imagined, developed, tested, and implemented. TISED is well positioned to play a role in addressing climate change through adaption and resilience by contributing to reimagining and redesigning urban systems.

The work of TISED and our collaborators in this research area will ultimately impact our future in the face of climate change.

Education and Training TISED educates future engineers, urban planners, and architects by offering training opportunities, new courses, integrating sustainability into programs, and enhancing education 'outside the classroom'. Teaching focusses on effective, practical, cutting-edge theories and strategies relevant to the development of sustainable engineers, architects, and planners' career paths. TISED offers a growing catalogue of interdisciplinary sustainability-focused courses, and a master’s program in Sustainability in Engineering and Design is under development.

TISED Course Offerings

In 2017-2018, TISED offered three courses to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty of Engineering. Two of these courses, ‘Energy Analysis’ and ‘Sustainable Urban Communities’, were offered for the second time. A new course, ‘Life Cycle-Based Environmental Footprinting’, was offered for the first time this year, and more courses are planned for the upcoming academic year. These courses will eventually become part of the master’s program.

TISED promotes interdisciplinary education through its course offerings, seeking to enroll students across academic units. Students from seven Faculty of Engineering departments and schools, as well as students in the Faculty of Science, enrolled in TISED courses this past academic year.

Energy Analysis

“Energy Analysis” (listed as FACC 510: Selected topics in the Faculty of Engineering) was sponsored by Fondation 3E and offered by TISED in Fall 2017. Professor Jeffrey Bergthorson, TISED Associate Director and recent teaching award recipient, taught this course in 2016 and continued to inspire his students again this year.

The course lays out the economic and environmental challenges that our society faces due to our rapid consumption of fossil fuels. Students assess their energy use and environmental footprint and recognize that the challenge ahead is serious. The course provides students with the knowledge and problem-analysis skills to investigate different solutions for primary clean electricity generation, transport, and backup power generation. To identify and assess potential clean energy options, the course covers the key aspects of energy literacy, including fundamental thermodynamics, energy concepts, and various energy metrics. Students critically analyze and discuss traditional and alternative energy and power systems and why their proposed clean energy solutions are, or are not, viable commercial options. The analysis of alternative power systems uses a multidisciplinary and integrated design approach that includes life-cycle and economic analyses. Students develop their ability to think critically, apply rigorous methodology to complex design problems, and supplement technical design with economic analysis.

Sustainable Urban Communities

“Sustainable Urban Communities” (listed as FACC 511: Selected topics in the Faculty of Engineering) is sponsored by Fondation 3E and was offered by TISED again in Winter 2018. The course is a logical sequel to the “Energy Analysis” course above. It was Professor Michael Jemtrud’s first time teaching the course. Prof. Jemtrud is a TISED member from the School of Architecture.

The course addresses sustainable design theory and applications in the built environment with students from a variety of fields (architecture, urban planning, engineering, sociology, environmental studies, economics, and international studies). Architecture provides the focus for environmental, socio-cultural and economic issues. The course investigates a holistic interpretation of sustainability and resilience by interrogating the potential of architecture and urban design to affect real change in environmental practice.

By the end of the course, students learned how to: • • • • •

Life Cycle-Based Environmental Footprinting

“Life Cycle-Based Environmental Footprinting” (listed as FACC 510: Selected topics in the Faculty of Engineering) was offered by TISED for the first time in Winter 2018 and taught by Anne-Marie Boulay.

Rooted in engineering and looking at the entire life cycle (from cradle to grave), environmental footprints quantify potential environmental impacts associated with the use of a product, process or service. The course covers the concept of footprint and the different types of footprints which have emerged over time, leading to the lifecycle based environmental footprints: carbon footprint, water footprint, and a complete environmental life-cycle analysis (LCA). The course also explores the political applications and implications of the environmental footprints and the related ISO standards. Environmental footprint communication is also covered, including labels,

product declaration, and the different rules that apply. Finally, the concept of planetary boundaries and its link with environmental footprints is introduced.

By the end of the course, students learned to: • • • • •

Understand such essential concepts as life cycle, inventory, impact assessment, water footprint, carbon footprint Be able to understand and assess the relevance of environmental information communicated in a paper, label or website Understand the implications that environmental information can have on policies and the directions in which international governance may be going Understand the key concepts associated with sustainable products and manufacturing Reflect on the impacts of his/her decisions as both an engineer and consumer

Education highlight: SEDTALKS! In 2016, TISED launched ‘SEDTalks!’, a platform for student researchers to share their sustainability research, develop professional skills in public-speaking and communication, expand their academic and industrial networks, and work with other researchers to make an impact on sustainability through engineering and design. In the pilot program, three of the student applicants were selected to receive specialized training.

In 2017-2018, we made changes to SEDTalks and increased the number of students benefitting from the program. Nine graduate students, all working on sustainability-related research in different disciplines across the Faculty of Engineering, applied to the program and participated in a series of training sessions aimed at improving their research presentation skills. The applicants were then invited to participate in a mock 3 minute thesis competition in front of a Selection Committee panel. The competition required students to present their research in non-technical terms. From these competitors, three were selected by the Committee to move on to the second phase of the SEDTalks program and receive personalized and intensive training. The three selected students, or ‘ChangeMakers’, turned their 3 minute thesis competition presentations into 18 minute ‘SEDtalks’.

The ChangeMakers worked with trainers, who included professional coaches and TISED Associate Director Jeff Bergthorson, to develop talks that would showcase their great work on sustainability and reach a diverse audience. The program culminated with an event where each ChangeMaker gave an engaging talk about their sustainability-related research to a captivated audience, followed by a networking cocktail. Invited guests included industry professionals, faculty members, students, alumni, and others.

In addition to training, the ChangeMakers receive in-laboratory portraits, networking materials, and a bursary award.

PhD candidate in Mining and Materials Engineering Supervised by Richard R. Chromik Clean Manufacturing: Cold Spraying High Performance Surfaces

From improving the performance of surfaces to expanding the use of ceramics in advanced technologies; metal/ceramic interfaces are the answer. Unfortunately, joining metals and ceramics typically involves expensive reaction joining techniques. Cold spray is a clean additive process with promising potential for production of protective metal/ceramic coatings and ceramic metallization. Sara’s research investigates the key factors involved in adhesion of these cold sprayed interfaces. The applications are endless, ranging from aerospace and automotive, to biomedical and electrical industries.

PhD candidate in Mining and Materials Engineering Supervised by Kirk H. Bevan Designing Energy Materials From The Atomic Scale: The Role Of Polarons

Advanced materials are essential to delivering high-performance clean energy technologies. In many energy materials, such as LiAir batteries, low conductivity is caused by the formation of polarons and this limits battery performance. Shuaishuai’s research explores the initial stages of polaron formation in the operation of Li-Air batteries down to the atomic scale using state-of-the-art simulation methods. Atomic-scale engineering studies of polaron formation are a necessary step to improve the electronic or optoelectronic properties of different energy materials and their entry into the energy marketplace.

PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering Supervised by Jeffrey Bergthorson & David Frost Replacing Fossil Fuels: Metal-Water Reactions for Clean Power

In the fight against climate change, new fuels are needed to replace fossil fuels. Metals store energy during the refining process and are a novel way of transporting and stockpiling renewable energy. Keena’s research is focused on releasing that stored energy, in the form of heat and hydrogen, by reacting the metal with water. The result is instant access to clean power with no release of greenhouse gasses.

A Look Ahead Research and Policy

TISED will continue to move forward on becoming a nationally and internationally recognized institute in sustainability research and policy implications. We will likely recruit more TISED Scholars-in-Residence this coming year. They will collaborate with our researchers, as well as partners in public outreach and policy, all while interacting with McGill students and the university community at large. We will be announcing the first recipient of the John M. Bishop and family Faculty Scholar Award in the year ahead.

We also continue to build partnerships and collaborative initiatives with key institutions locally, across Canada, and abroad.

Our thematic priorities, which include Sustainable Infrastructure and Urban Development, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, and Sustainable Industrial Processes and Manufacturing, have been expanded to add Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience. There is no denying that addressing climate change through adaptation projects and improving resilience has become front of mind for many researchers, engineers, designers, urban planners, and policymakers. Several TISED members work on this important topic, including our new Trottier Chair in Sustainability in Engineering and Design, Dr. Laxmi Sushama. The 5th Annual Trottier Symposium on Sustainability in Engineering, Energy, and Design brought in 5 speakers who shared their expertise on the topic, including 2 professionals, 2 researchers, and municipal policymakers. TISED looks forward to advancing both research and policy on climate change adaptation and resilience in the coming years. In addition, TISED will continue to lead research and inform policy in our other priority areas.

Outreach

In 2018-2019, we look forward to again hosting a number of educational events, many open to the public, including our Distinguished Visitor Speaker Series. All our public events are advertised on social media and our website so keep an eye open for announcements!

Education and Training

We plan to launch the third installment of SEDTalks by early fall 2018, and aim to attract even more graduate student applicants and expand our training session offerings to continue maximizing the benefit of this program. With every installment of SEDTalks, TISED is helping graduate student researchers develop communication skills and increase the visibility of their sustainability-related research with key stakeholders.

We are increasing the number of courses offered in the upcoming academic year. In Fall 2018, we are again offering “FACC 510: Energy Analysis”. In Winter 2019, we will begin listing our courses as SEAD (Sustainability in Engineering and Design) instead of FACC (Selected topics in the Faculty of Engineering). We will be offering “SEAD 515: Climate Change Adaptation and Engineering Infrastructure”, “SEAD 520: Life Cyclebased Environmental Footprinting”, and “SEAD 540: Industrial Ecology and Systems”.
