10
Dr. Chris Marnay, Principal, Microgrid Design of Mendocino In residence at TISED: December 2016 to May 2017
Over the last 15 years, Dr. Chris Marnay’s work and research has focused on microgrids and he has become an influential researcher in this area. Dr. Marnay brought his experience to bear, working with TISED and others on exploring the benefits of microgrids and their role in smart grid deployment and sustainable resilient communities. Dr. Marnay is a retired Staff Scientist currently affiliated with the China Energy Group. He worked at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for 29 years. He models economicenvironmental problems related to likely future adoption patterns of small-scale distributed energy resources (DER), especially when clustered in microgrids exercising local semiautonomous control and able to island. He was a member of the Consortium of Electric Reliability Solutions (CERTS) team that proposed the CERTS Microgrid concept, and has published a large body of research on microgrid principles, economics, and applications. Microgrids are seen as one of the key building block technologies that can permit communityscale integrated energy systems for small-scale renewables. Dr. Marnay’s work at TISED explores how we might develop multilevel energy systems based on microgrids, including how systems of different scales should be chosen to achieve optimum. His work helps to develop and extend optimization at various scales, and considers economic, technical, and policy factors. In April 2017, Dr. Marnay moderated the discussion at a public seminar during the two-day Research Workshop Program event hosted by TISED. This year’s theme was titled "Is there a role for microgrids in the energy future of Quebec?”.
11
Dr. Stefan Grimberg, Professor, Clarkson University In residence at TISED: January to June 2017 Anaerobic digestion researcher, Dr. Stefan Grimberg, collaborated with TISED and others to study the environmental, economic and associated policy implications of diverting source-separated organic waste from landfills to wastewater treatment plants. Additionally, Dr. Grimberg worked with TISED to assess and develop policies that minimize impact on the environment while realizing their energy and nutrient recovery potential. Dr. Grimberg is a Professor and former Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Clarkson University. He has published more than 50 journal articles, conference proceedings, and reports and has delivered more than 90 professional talks at academic conferences or universities around the world. Dr. Grimberg has been the investigator on research grants from the National Science Foundation, United States Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy, NYSERDA and other funding agencies. His research most recently has focused on anaerobic digestion of agricultural or other high-strength wastes for the generation of energy. In particular, his research group investigated the anaerobic digestion of sand-laden dairy manure for a midsize dairy farm in Northern New York. Dr. Grimberg also has been actively involved in the New York Water Environment Association as the Chair of the university committee and the Advisor to student chapters. At an upcoming TISED seminar in June 2017, Dr. Grimberg will be speaking about organic solid and municipal waste, including how share resource recovery processes can lead to a more circular resource economy, reducing environmental impact and using resources from waste.

POLICY HIGHLIGHT: IS THERE A ROLE FOR MICROGRIDS IN QUEBEC? On April 25th and 26th 2017, TISED hosted a two-day Research Workshop Program convening various stakeholders to on the topic of microgrids. TISED also held a public event on April 25th: "Is there a role for microgrids in the energy future of Quebec?”. The event was moderated by TISED Scholar-in-residence Dr. Chris Marnay. Microgrids are locally controlled power systems, such as university campuses, usually grid connected, but able to operate as electrical islands. They have become an increasingly familiar power sector feature in recent years, representing one of the three legs of the smart grid stool, together with enhanced megagrid operations and grid-customer interaction. Development of microgrids has followed a convoluted path that has led to high interest and significant activity in the U.S. and Japan, but with much less dynamism elsewhere, and with different drivers. Where Québec lies in the microgrid landscape is an open question. Dr. Marnay opened the event by providing an introduction to microgrids, reporting on the research and development that took place during the first decade of the century, and describing alternative future pathways the electricity supply sector may follow.

EVENT HIGHLIGHT: FOURTH ANNUAL TROTTIER SYMPOSIUM ON SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING, ENERGY AND DESIGN A large fraction of fossil fuels is consumed – quite inefficiently – in the transportation of goods and people. Consequently, reaching GHG reduction goals will require major transformations in th is sector of activity. The Annual Trottier Symposium series contributed to this mandatory energy transition by dedicating its fourth symposium to the transportation industry and the challenges it faces by exploring a number of possible futures, knowing that many upcoming technologies make the transition to a low-carbon society more likely every day. Technology alone will not be enough, however, and the introduction of new, disruptive technologies is a ripe opportunity to re-evaluate our portfolio of transit tools. And if we take advantage of this opportunity to revisit the goals of transportation, urban design, and the public and private vision, not only can we obtain environmental benefits, but also economic and social ones. SPEAKER | Hervé Levifve: Communities and businesses today are innovating to find solutions to metropolitan passenger mobility: toughening up access regulations, mobilizing property to serve logistics in urban areas, new forms of organization, calls for innovation, pooling of flows, inte lligent solutions to the delivery of parcels to individuals. There is no single solution, but a set of avenues that take into account the diversity of urban fabrics and are tailored to the fifty or so economic sectors that are present in cities. Somewhere between rusticity and innovation, we put forward a panorama of ecological economic solutions for consideration. SPEAKER | Marie-Hélène Massot: Shuttling between the demands of hypermodernity, the evolution of the territory of daily life, the identification of behavioural rationalities and the observation of strategies deployed by actors provides the foundation for our reflections on how tomorrow’s mobility will be thought out and organized. SPEAKER | Peter Norton: Technological innovation gives us new choices and new means to pursue them, but it doesn’t tell us what we should seek. Yet strangely we often find technology itself cast as the answer. The proffered high-tech solutions are “data driven,” as if no one need ask which data matter or what they really tell us. Asking such questions does not make you a Luddite. It means you appreciate the best that technology has to offer: new means to pursue ends of humans’ choosing. It’s to recognize that we have a spectrum of choices —high-tech, low-tech, and no-tech. SPEAKER | Anthony Perl: This presentation assessed the legacy of urban mobility infrastructure development in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver to identify each city’s point of departure for a
19
post-carbon mobility transition. Options for expanding electri c mobility infrastructure were considered, along with urban development strategies that encourage accessibility by nonmotorised travel. Lastly, the role of disruptive mobility agents from autonomous vehicle producers to ride sharing organizations was examined.

EVENT HIGHLIGHT: GREEN ROOFS FOR STORMWATER RETENTION AND FLOWRATE ATTENUATION This seminar by Denis M. O’Carroll, Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW Australia, provided an important introduction to green roofs. Green roofs are becoming popular in North America as they are effective tools for managing stormwater runoff in urban areas. However, the implementation of green roofs in North American urban environments remains underused, in part due to a lack of climate appropriate green roof design guidelines. A greater understanding of how green roofs perform with respect to fundamental stormwater management processes, such as stormwater retention and peak flow attenuation, is required. This study investigated the impact that differing climates have on the retention performance of three green roofs in three distinct Canadian climates (i.e., London, Calgary, and Halifax). Data were collected over 2.5 growing seasons. The impact of climate on stormwater retention will be discussed in addition to the extent to which green roofs attenuate stormwater peak flow.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING TISED COURSE ON "ENERGY ANALYSIS" Offered by TISED and sponsored by Fondation 3E, “Energy Analysis” (FACC 510: Selected topics in the Faculty of Engineering), was offered in fall 2016 to students from various Faculty of Engineering programs. Professor Jeffrey Bergthorson did a great job teaching the course, or so say his course evaluations and the teaching award he won this year! The course lays out the economic and environmental challenges that our society faces due to our rapid consumption of fossil fuels. Students assess their energy use and environmental footprint and recognized that the challenge ahead is serious. The course provides students with the knowledge and problem-analysis skills to investigate different solutions for primary clean electricity generation, as well for transport or backup power generation. To identify and assess potential clean energy options, the course covers the key aspects of energy literacy, including fundamental thermodynamics, energy concepts, and various energy metrics. Students critical analyze and discuss traditional and alternative energy and power systems and why their proposed clean energy solutions are, or are not, viable commercial options. The analysis of alternative power systems uses a multidiscipli nary and integrated design approach that includes life-cycle and economic analyses. Students developed their ability to think critically, apply rigorous methodology to complex design problems, and to supplement technical design with economic analysis. By the end of the course, students learned:
Energy: now and in future Energy metrics Alternative Primary Power-Generation Systems Alternative Energy-Storage and Secondary Power-Generation Critical Analysis and Application of Theory

TISED COURSE ON "SUSTAINABLE URBAN COMMUNITIES" Offered by TISED and sponsored by Fondation 3E, “Sustainable Urban Communities” (FACC 511: Selected topics in the Faculty of Engineering) in winter 2017 is for senior undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty of Engineering as a logical sequel to FACC 510, the “Energy Analysis” course. Professor Stefan Grimberg from Clarkson University (a TISED Scholar-inResidence) taught the course, which examines the application of energy analysis in re-designed and re-developed plans for sustainable urban communities with a distinct focus on energy and materials use and savings. The course includes considerations of emissions reductions from the building and transportation sectors, and commercial off-the-shelf technologies (COTS) for energy management and emissions reductions. The course emphasizes critical thinking through solving complex design problems on real sites, technical and modelling analyses of energy systems, and the physical, economical and societal constraints and effects of design strategies on the sustainability of urban environments. Students applied their newfound tools in sustainable community building to execute the design projects throughout the course in such areas as wastewater, recycling, green buildings, traffic, community development, and energy efficiency. By the end of the course, students learned:

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHT: SEDTALKS! In 2016, we launched ‘SEDTalks!’, a platform for student researchers to share their sustainability science and engineering research, develop professional skills in public-speaking and communication, expand their academic and industrial networks, and work with other researchers to make an impact on sustainability through engineering and design. As an educational and skills-building series, SEDTalks! allow graduate students in McGill's Faculty of Engineering to learn, make connections, and advance sustainability through stateof-the-art McGill research in one of these three areas:
Sustainable Industrial Processes & Manufacturing Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency
Sustainable Urban Infrastructure
We received many great applications from interested graduate students and three were selected to participate in the program. These three "SEDTalks! ChangeMakers" received coaching from researchers and trainers to showcase their great work in sustainability at the SEDTalks! networking event. Invited event guests included donors who support SEDTalks!, industry members, faculty members, students, alumni, and others. As part of the program, we also hosted a networking cocktail, giving our ChangeMakers a chance to further their connections with TISED's academic and industrial partners. After many hours of professional coaching and practice sessions, each ChangeMaker gave an engaging 18-minutes talk about their sustainability-related research to a captivated audience at the SEDTalk event. Watch the SEDTalks! videos on our YouTube channel.

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHT: SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION CASE COMPETITION PROMOTES CROSS-FACULTY COLLABORATION Green chemistry is a rapidly growing area for industry as companies grapple with increased regulatory requirements, supply constraints, and consumer demands for sustainable products. Challenges associated with the marketability of clean technologies must be considered for effective implementation. Each year, TISED, the Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM), and the NSERC CREATE in Green Chemistry program, partner to offer a “Sustainable Innovation through Green Chemistry” workshop and case competition. This event brings academic and thought leaders together to impart their knowledge on the innovative potential Green Chemistry holds in guiding product design and business decisions through a series of interdisciplinary seminars. A case competition is also held where mixed teams of graduate students from Engineering, Chemistry, and Management build a strong business case for introducing sustainable products and phasing out riskier alternatives.
Two public lectures were featured at this year’s event: Commercializing Green Chemistry: New Ideas with Old Concepts By Howie Honeyman, CEO of Forward Water Technologies Commercializing green chemistry, materials, or engineering processes adds new dimensions to some of the established frameworks for advancing new technologies into the market place, but not without significant hurdles. Investing in Safer Chemistry By Adrian Horotan, Partner at Safer Made As the science on the health effects of harmful chemicals continues to develop, so does public awareness, influencing purchasing decisions, and leading brand manufacturers and retailers are taking notice.

FINANCIAL REVIEW SUPPORT FOR INTELLECTUAL LEADERSHIP: This year, TISED received a generous gift from the Bishop family to recognize and support interdisciplinary research excellence in the area of sustainability in engineering and design. The gift led to the creation of the John M. Bishop and Family Faculty Scholar Award in Sustainability in Engineering and Design intended for research that will reduce society’s dependency on non-renewable resources. We will be appointing our first recipient, a professor with an outstanding track record in research and scholarly activities, next year. In addition, alumnus Ram Panda continued his generous support to the Faculty of Engineering by financially supporting TISED’s Panda Faculty Scholar in Sustainability in Engineering and Design.
ADVANCING SCHOLARLY RESEARCH EXCELLENCE: TISED extended our commitment to collaborative research efforts through our continued investment in our Scholars-in-Residence program. This program brings renowned researchers and scholars from around the globe to share and enrich TISED’s and the Faculty of Engineering’s research and teaching endeavours. Our scholarscontinue to advance TISED’s goals for sustainability in engineering and design by conducting collaborative research with faculty, teaching courses and presenting guest lectures, and engaging in discussions with graduate and post-grad researchers. We also actively invite our visiting scholars to deliver public seminars, sharing their expertise as part of our research workshop program, with the ultimate goal of drafting a white paper on sustainability policy in collaboration with various experts from academia, industry and government. This year we hosted two scholars -inresidence as well as a visiting scholar, and already have another confirmed for next year.
ENCOURAGING STUDENT RESEARCH: TISED was also active in sponsoring student research events, including conferences and symposiums like the McGill Engineering Research Showcase (MERS), and hosting the poster showcase integrated into our Research Workshop Program and featuring research from many students in the Faculties of Engineering and Science. TISED also provided funding and awards for twelve SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering) projects as part of our commitment to fostering sustainability research to students of all levels.
30
STUDENT TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT: This year, TISED developed and offered two sustainability-related courses to select students across the Faculty of Engineering, “Energy Analysis” in Fall 2016, and “Sustainable Urban Communities” in Winter 2017, with financial support from Fondation 3E. These classes were designed to lay out and examine existing challenges relating to sustainability and provide the knowledge and problem-solving skills to enable students to engineer comprehensive solutions. Workshops for students were supported through TISED again this past year, allowing many students to receive direct training relating to sustainable engineering and design.
AUGMENTING THE STUDENT MATCHING FUNDS PROGRAM: Donor support of the matching funds program has been very positive and is presented in the student support section of this report.
PROMOTING OUTREACH AND PUBLIC INTERACTION: TISED collaborated with various McGill units, and other groups, on events, workshops and conferences over the past year. In partnership with McGill’s School of Architecture, TISED cohosted a public lecture by Claire Weisz (Principal-in-charge, WXY architecture + urban design) on November 14, 2016. Additionally, TISED partnered with The Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM) and McGill department of Chemistry (NSERC CREATE) for the 5th Annual Public Lecture on Sustainable Innovation through Green Chemistry in February, 2017. In 2016, TISED launched ‘SEDTalks!’, a platform for graduate student researchers to share their sustainability-related research with academia, industrial partners and the public. We created this opportunity to allow these researchers to develop their communication skills with professional coaching, expand their academic and industrial networks, and work with other researchers to make an impact on sustainable engineering and design. As part of the program, we also hosted a networking cocktail, giving our SEDTalks ChangeMakers a chance to connect with TISED’s academic and industrial partners. TISED also supported and collaborated on various events with its partner l’Institut de l'énergie Trottier, particularly, the annual Trottier Symposium on Sustainable Engineering, Energy and Design. Collaborating with these units is beneficial in further developing a culture and community of sustainability experts while also engaging decision-makers and the public.
