Talented individuals are engaged in our progress to date and future ahead through research, education, policy, and outreach. Our fifty TISED members include distinguished scholars who work in interdisciplinary teams on technological and policy dimensions of critical environmental and sustainability issues. We are grateful to be actively engaged with engineering, architecture, and urban planning students (among others) in activities related to sustainability research and learning. We are building new and solid partnerships with other institutes, organizations, and companies year over year. Over the past year, TISED continued its Research Workshop Program, providing funding to members to bring together experts from academia, industry and government to advance cuttingedge and emerging technological and policy solutions implementing sustainability. Our research workshop entitled ‘Nanomaterials: Implications for Human Health and Environment’ was held in January in partnership with Pollution Probe. Comprised of over 80 participants from industry, academia and the government and NGO sectors, stakeholders from 35 national and international organizations explored challenging questions and solutions for today and tomorrow, reflecting a widely-felt need for a national dialogue on nanotechnology in the context of human and environmental health. TISED’s research and organizational capacity was significantly enhanced by the launch of our Scholar-in-Residence program, which will likely bring on board more than one esteemed external scholar in the 2016-2017 academic year. Professor Jeffrey Bergthorson, TISED’s Panda Faculty Scholar in Sustainable Engineering and Design, continued a second year of research excellence using this award. As part of TISED’s student engagement and education, as we offered a for-credit course (Design and Analysis of Sustainable Neighbourhoods) as well as multiple training workshops on energy analysis and life cycle analysis. This was a very active year for hosting public events geared to educating communities of practice and the general public. We hosted 14 large forums with hundreds of people at most events. As well, TISED and Institut de l’energie Trottier co-hosted the Third Annual Symposium on Sustainable Engineering and Design on “Renewables: What holds us back? PARTNERS HIGHLIGHT: TISED MEMBER ON PANEL AT CLIMATE CHANGE TECH CONFERENCE (CCTC) The Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) hosted the 4th Climate Change Technology Conference (CCTC) in May 2015 and explored emerging techniques and technologies for the mitigation of, and adaptation to, the impacts of climate change. TISED member François Bouffard was a plenary speaker for the "Quebec-based initiatives" panel. The description here explains what this plenary was about. “Energy Storage Systems for Carbon Footprint Reduction in Remote Communities” Given its vastly hydroelectric power generation mix, carbon footprint reduction potential in Quebec's power industry remains limited. This, however, neglects Quebec's large number of off-grid remote communities which are powered locally by diesel-fired generators. The power generation needs of these communities represent a non-negligible quantity of fuel contributing to the province’s carbon footprint when both burnt and hauled. There are carbon footprint and global generation cost reduction opportunities arising in the coupling of diesel generation systems with local renewable generation. Nonetheless, the greatest benefits of these renewable/diesel couplings can only be realized with the support of energy storage systems. In this talk, we argue the case for energy storage as the cornerstone of more efficient and low carbon off-grid communities.

COURSE: SUSTAINABLE URBAN NEIGHBORHOODS FOR FOOD, WATER, AND ENERGY INDEPENDENCE Organized by TISED and sponsored by Fondation 3E, this course entitled “Design and Analysis of Sustainable Urban Neighbourhoods for Energy, Water and Food Independence” was offered in fall 2015. The course took a multidisciplinary and integrated design approach. Students developed their ability to think critically, apply rigorous methodology to complex design problems, and perform technical and modelling analyses of energy and water systems as applied to the built environment. “Design” in this course encompassed a comprehensive approach— enhancing people’s lives by shaping the built-environment based on a profound understanding of local and global forces, physical and social structures, and the impacts of various design strategies, morphologies, and materials, on life-cycle impacts, neighborhood resilience and the environment. By the end of the course, students learned: 

Methodologies for achieving highperformance buildings and neighbourhoods; Design strategies at both the building- and neighbourhood-scales for achieving highperformance; Modelling and spreadsheet software to test design hypotheses (RETscreen, HOT2000, HomerPro); and Effective ways of communicating design ideas through graphic and visual methods.

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHT: SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION CASE COMPETITION PROMOTES CROSS-FACULTY COLLABORATION Each year, TISED, the Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM), and the NSERC CREATE in Green Chemistry program, partner to offer a “Sustainable Innovation through Green Chemistry” workshop and case competition. Green chemistry is a rapidly growing area for industry as companies grapple with increased regulatory requirements, supply constraints, and consumer demands for sustainable products. Business innovation is a powerful means to achieve sustainable development, but challenges associated with marketability of clean technologies must be considered for effective implementation. This event brings academic and thought leaders together to impart their knowledge to the students and the local community through a series of seminars in their respective fields of expertise. A real time case competition is also held where graduate students from Engineering, Chemistry and Management are invited to apply their learning towards a strong business case introducing more sustainable products or create substitutions to phase out riskier alternatives. In January 2016’s edition of this event, leading expert Dr. Amy Cannon (Executive Director, Beyond Benign Foundation and recipient of the world’s first PhD in Green Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts in 2004) gave a talk on "Green Chemistry and Biomimicry: Towards More Sustainable Products through Inspiration from Nature and Innovation in the Laboratory". This talk highlighted several examples of how disciplines can complement each other to address global problems by incorporating green chemistry. Watch Dr. Amy Cannon’s keynote lecture Following the public lecture, graduate-level participants from the Faculties of Science, Management, and Engineering, attended interdisciplinary seminars led by academic and industry representatives. The following day, graduate students from management,

26

chemistry, and engineering, participated in a full-day case competition. The teams, composed of students from McGill and Queen’s, worked together in five interdisciplinary teams. This mixed team composition allowed students to practice working alongside teammates with different knowledge backgrounds and skillsets while building their network of potential future collaborators. This year's case featured sustainability opportunities and challenges related to polylactide (PLA). Background materials relating to PLA, life-cycle analysis, and case specific company information were distributed to students to review in advance. After researching, preparing materials, and conducting practice runs, each student team presented in front of a judging panel. Presentations were evaluated on the basis of integration of technical and business information, demonstrated mastery of concepts, strength of presentation, and overall quality of the teams’ responses and recommendations. The event highlighted the continued interest and need for cross-Faculty collaboration and opportunities for students from different faculties to work together in supportive learning environments. This case competition encourages students to have sustainability as a key driver (while giving them tools to do so!) when they are innovating and developing new projects in the future.

WORKSHOP ON LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA) WITH DR. BULLE TISED held a two-day Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) workshop in May 2015 in order that fifty students learned basic LCA methods and applications. This workshop was open to McGill students in departments and Schools in the Faculty of Engineering that met certain eligibility criteria (and signed up early!). We asked the fundamental question: What is a “green product”? We discussed the fact that many green solutions finally lead to unexpected burden shifting and a holistic approach is needed to really strive toward sustainability. LCA was explained as a fundamental method for assessing the environmental impacts of products and technologies from a "cradle to grave" systems perspective and as an essential tool for anyone who performs environmental analyses or uses the results of such analyses for decision making avoiding burden shifting. This workshop provided an introduction to LCA methods and applications. Students gained an understanding of why an LCA systems perspective is important, basic skills for sound application of the LCA method and proper interpretation of its results, and an appreciation for the strengths and limitations of LCA in practice. We covered the four

27

major steps in LCA: (1) goal definition and scope; (2) life-cycle inventory compilation; (3) life-cycle impact assessment; and (4) interpretation and management and will include a hands-on modeling exercise, which the students will perform in parallel to lectures to reinforce learning objectives and to gain experience in LCA application. WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR, CÉCILE BULLE This workshop was given by Cecile Bulle, Professor at Universite du Quebec a Montreal (UQAM) in the department of Strategy, Social and Environmental Responsibility. Bulle teaches both (future) LCA practitioners and researchers on how to conduct life cycle assessment and environmental modelling, and also teaches managers about how to use life cycle assessment in decision-making, particularly in the building and real estate field.

WORKSHOP ON LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA) WITH DR. BAKSHI This workshop covered the basic principles, applications and tools associated with some of the most popular methods for assessing the sustainability of human activities. We then focused on the theoretical framework for modeling the life cycle of a selected system. Using this framework as the basis, we learned about the approaches of carbon and water foot printing, energy analysis, and life cycle assessment. Examples were used to demonstrate the characteristics of each approach. Hands-on experience in these methods was available with the help of free software such as OpenLCA, EIO-LCA and EcoLCA. We finished by focusing on the pros and cons of current methods and directions and opportunities for further research. WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR, BHAVIK BAKSHI Bhavik Bakshi is a Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Ohio State University (OSU). He also holds appointments in Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering at OSU and as a Visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai, India. His research involves developing methods and applications for assessing and designing sustainable systems that respect nature's limits and reduce the chance of unintended harm. He received his chemical engineering degrees from the University of Bombay and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with a minor in technology and environmental policy from MIT and Harvard.

WORKSHOP ON ECODESIGN & LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS (LCA) WITH SUSTAINABLE MINDS In March 2016, TISED member Fiona Zhao initiated a workshop on “Ecodesign and LCA” with Sustainable Minds and supported by TISED. LCA is a fundamental method for assessing the environmental impacts of products and technologies from a "cradle to grave" systems perspective. It is an essential tool for anyone who performs environmental analyses or uses the results of such analyses for decision-making to avoid "burden shifting". This workshop was designed to deliver fundamental knowledge and hands-on experience. Students learned about eco-concept modeling, how to benchmark products and gain insights about integrating environmental performance into product development. They gained an appreciated of what it takes to design 'greener' products right, from the start as well as innovation through ecodesign strategies, how to identify hot-spots and opportunities for environmental performance improvement.

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHT: FONDATION 3E GIFT ENHANCES ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION This past May, TISED was pleased to announce a three-year gift from Fondation 3E supporting student training in energy literacy and sustainability! There is widespread public consensus that aggressive steps have to be taken to prevent catastrophic climate change and that we must save our planet’s resources and environment for future generations. This requires a trained workforce of engineers, architects, urban planners to help the transition to energy and urban infrastructure that drastically reduces GHG emissions while fostering robust cities and communities.

support for new courses offered by TISED, “Energy Analysis” and “Sustainable Urban Communities”, Fondation 3E is helping to lay the foundation for a planned Master’s program in Sustainable Engineering and Design. Enhancing education in the area of sustainability and engineering a priority of the Faculty of Engineering at McGill University – the Master’s program is an integral part of the action plan.

Fondation 3E, committed to energy literacy, has made a substantial contribution to this effort. By providing

These new courses tackle life cycle analysis for energy and materials, fuel cycles for conventional and non-

29

conventional resources, system and process efficiency, storage, emerging energy conversion technologies, energy and materials use and savings, emissions reductions from the building sector, electrification of transportation, and more!
