Message from TISED’s Director I am pleased to present the 2018-19 TISED Annual Report. My thanks and gratitude to all our TISED members and staff for their contributions towards another successful year. This past year, TISED has made considerable progress on many fronts. TISED has been working towards the creation of a Master’s Program in Sustainability in Engineering and Design. The proposed program has reached many milestones including final approval from the McGill Senate in February 2019. The proposal for the program is currently being reviewed internally and it should be submitted to external reviewers by the end of 2019. As part of the future Master’s Program, TISED has been continually developing its Sustainability in Engineering and Design (SEAD) courses. In the past year, a new SEAD course was debuted, SEAD 515: Climate Change Adaptation and Engineering Infrastructure, bringing the total up to three SEAD courses. More new SEAD courses are scheduled to be taught in the upcoming 2019-20 academic year. The latest edition of SEDTalks!, our highly successful communications skills-building training and workshop series for graduate students, was held in front of a full capacity audience in March at the McGill Faculty Club. With the support of our partners from McGill’s SKILLSETS and the SEDTalks! Selection Committee, the final event showcased research on sustainability of our three finalist ChangeMakers. Fourteen graduate students were trained through the program on communication skills to promote sustainability research. TISED continues to grow its research capacity. TISED Chair in Sustainable Engineering and Design, Dr. Laxmi Sushama, has worked hard on establishing a collaborative research program for climate change adaptation in the Arctic, while developing and delivering SEAD 515. TISED also received two Scholars-in-Residence, Drs. Joel Pedersen (University of Wisconsin – Madison) and Thilo Hofmann (University of Vienna) in early 2019. Both scholars worked intensively with TISED members towards two cutting-edge research workshops on technology for sustainable energy and sustainable agriculture. Finally, we want to stress the importance of our partnerships. Thanks to our collaboration with many partners, TISED is able to expand its impact. In the past year, we co-hosted outreach events and research programs with our McGill partners at the Bensadoun School of Retail Management, the Global Health Programs and Sustainability in Engineering at McGill. We also collaborated with our external partners Fondation 3E, Institut en Génie de l’Énergie Électrique and the Institut de l’énergie Trottier. We thank all our donors for their continued support of TISED and our mission. We are deeply grateful for their support to all of our initiatives. To a successful 2019-20 for all,

Subhasis Ghoshal Professor and Director, Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design
