Annual Report 2018-2019

IGEE Summer School 2018 TISED is a regular sponsor of the IGEE Summer School since its debut in 2016. This year, the 3rd edition of the event was held on May 7-9, 2018 in the Lorne M. Trottier Building on McGill’s downtown campus. Since the event was held at McGill, TISED gave an in-kind contribution of logistical support and manpower to help in the setup of the event. The IGEE, or L’ Institut en Génie de l’Énergie Électrique, was created in 2001 as a partnership between Hydro-Quebec, industry members, and university institutions to create high-quality training programs in the field of electrical energy engineering. The original mission of the IGEE was to have such programs that would both meet the needs of the industry and would facilitate research collaboration between universities by pooling their resources in this field. IGEE currently offers a program with a concentration in Power Engineering that consists of ten courses taught at the four Montreal-area universities. The IGEE Summer School is a promotional tool that is designed to attract students to the main IGEE program. Each year, the IGEE Summer School presents a different aspect of electrical energy engineering and tries to simplify the technical aspects of the topic for its students who are currently enrolled in undergraduate engineering programs, including students from McGill Engineering. This year, the focus was on the role of buildings in the sustainable development and decarbonisation of society. Over the three days of the Summer School, the planned activities aim to develop among the students an appreciation of the technological challenges involved in the design and engineering of the energy systems that are found in our buildings. Several TISED members are participants of this year’s edition of the Summer School. As the host institution, Dr. Jim Nicell, the Dean of McGill’s Faculty of Engineering, gave the welcoming speech to participants on the first morning. The entire three-day event ran smoothly afterwards under the supervision of Dr. François Bouffard (Electrical Engineering), the main organizer and moderator of multiple panels and round table discussions at IGEE Summer School 2018. Professors Michael Jemtrud and Nik Luka, both from the School of Architecture, also participated in multiple round table talks on topics such as the design of highperformance buildings and the human being at the centre of high-performance buildings. Other members of the McGill sustainability community also participated at the Summer School 2018. Michael Jemtrud was joined by other members of TeamMTL, a joint McGillConcordia group of engineering and architecture students, who talked about the experience of designing and building a solar house in preparation for their upcoming Solar Decathlon China 2018 competition starting in July 2018. Jérôme Conraud and Philippe St-Jean, from McGill’s Facilities Management and Ancillary Services, presented a case study of the renovations of the McGill School of Environment.
