What I'm Hearing...

Here are some of the latest topics of discussion among my professional associates and what I'm reading in the business media.

1. "UNDERSTAND THE CHALLENGES OF YOUR EMPLOYEES" - What keeps your employees coming back, or what keeps them from being able to show up? The more you understand their challenges, the more responsive you can be in supporting them. If you have good employees that have the skills and talents you need, it is more than worth it to understand their challenges and work with them.

2. "CHECK YOUR OWN BEHAVIOR" If you're the boss, check in with yourself and those who report to you. Determine if there is something that you may be doing or saying that is sending a message that is contradictory to what you intend. It is well worth it to make these adjustments.

3. "PAY ATTENTION TO THOSE WHO ARE REMOTE" - Your remote employees need specific attention in order to feel part of the team. They may feel left out since they feel that those in charge may not be able to fully judge their performance. Many fear they will miss out on promotions or chances for salary increases. They often feel they are "out of sight, out of mind". It is important to let them know how they can illustrate their performance and you will be ensuring it will be fairly judged.

Developing Executive Presence Once we are propelled into an executive role, or when we wish to promote one of our people into one, the game changes.

The behaviors and skills that got us to this point are not the same as those that will help us excel in a new, higherlevel executive role.

One of the key areas of focus is the ability to operate more strategically and interface with others that are peers at this new higher level. What does it take to get there?

Everyone thinks they are ready until they realize they are not. It's about building confidence to step up into a new role without fear of failure. Missteps often teach us lessons and this is how we grow into a new role.

Creating opportunities for your most talented performers to experience interaction with more senior leaders while still under your guidance is an invaluable development step.

Training yourself or those who report to you to provide high-level communications and updates (while having the details available when questioned is a trademark of senior level communications).

"Reading between the lines" is a critical skill as well. Learning how to translate vague directions or guidance - always keeping the big picture in mind, and using that to guide your actions creates outcomes aligned with the strategy.

Always stay focused on developing others. You need to have your replacement ready when you are ready to move up. They may not wind up as the heir apparent for your role, but they can certainly be one of the candidates for consideration.

Be a mentor or find a mentor they can be invaluable in helping someone successfully navigate new opportunities. Check in with mentors/mentees through regularly scheduled sessions to check progress.

And finally, never shortchange yourself or talk yourself out of your aspirations. Work hard, learn all you can and don't be afraid to step into the unknown. The payoff is so worth it!

Executive Coaching Tip SPRING: YOUR SEASON OF RENEWAL For some, spring feels like a new chance or an opportunity to start over. For others, the overwhelm and dread they are feeling simply continues. How can we tune into Spring as simply a change in season, and then mirror that in our own lives. Let's make it a time to transition from one state of mind to another - giving ourselves some grace along the way.

The change in season is an automatic positive energy transition for some. The longer days and more hours of sunlight help us produce more serotonin - the "feel good" chemical.

For others, the change is not automatic. There can be a feeling of disappointment over what they haven't gotten done. Or maybe the "feel good" chemical doesn't work the same for them.

How can you use this change of season as a catalyst for your own Season of Renewal?

Here are some ideas: 1. Try to use the beginning of a month to re-calibrate your schedule and commitments.

Schedule more time for yourself - no matter how small the block of time might be.

2. Operate with more discernment around your "to do" list. Get real about what MUST get done and what is simply NICE TO DO. Get the "Must Do's" done and simply monitor the "Nice to do's". You might be surprised when the "Nice to do's" can actually fall off your radar with no negative impact.

3. Change your environment. Plan time outside. Take breaks and walk away from your tasks. Look up from your screen and notice what's around you. Make a shift...

4. Does the concept of "spring cleaning" make you more overwhelmed? If spring is not your time to make those kinds of adjustments, don't feel obligated. Maybe focusing on resetting yourself will make you feel better than organizing your things.

5. Change your sleep routine if you don't sleep well. Keep tweaking it until you find something that works. Deep sleep can be a great source of new energy.

Just remember, experiencing this sense of renewal takes energy and a commitment to make changes to things that are not working. Illustrate your resilience and don't wait for anyone to give you permission - just take it!

Books I Recommend THE HAPPINESS ADVANTAGE

HOW THE WORLD SEES YOU

The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor is a book based on Shawn's research while at Harvard Business School. His premise is based on flipping the paradigm regarding the source of our happiness. It is widely believed that it comes from our careers, jobs, or money. His research indicates that Happiness comes first before everything else.

He has taken the results of his research into other universities as well as Fortune 500 companies. He has measured his results before and after training those employees and has been able to illustrate positive outcomes regarding the participants' Happiness!

I LOVE this book. It was quite eye-opening for me! It helped me understand how my instinctive style could be used to my advantage. It also clued me in on why I resisted other roles and/or tasks - and how resisting these tasks brought me to a place of reduced self-confidence. There is an assessment and a report through Sally Hogshead that details your results relative to her research in the science of Fascination. It is a perfect recommendation for my Women's Renewal Issue!

I hope this April, 2022 edition of my magazine can be part of your Spring Renewal theme...

This is what I've been up to: On Friday, March 18th, I attended the New Orleans Chamber Power Up Women's Leadership Conference. It was sponsored by several companies with a local presence, but the lead sponsor was Fidelity Bank. They view this conference as an extension of their commitment to business women in our community. They have just hit 1500 members in the P.O.W.E.R. program (Power of Women Entrepreneurs Realized) I was involved in the magic of 550 other fantastic and smart women - all sharing their wisdom, friendship, support, and their own vulnerability. THIS was the inspiration for my April magazine becoming the Women's Renewal Issue. We all need to feel recharged and supported, and learn something new that we can immediately apply in a positive way. The photo above is from one of the breakout sessions. I'm in the middle of the photo with a big smile - arms around my neighbor!

I hope my magazine and my other published content gives you those same feelings of support and belonging! I approach all of my writing, video, training, and interactions with this intention...
