Legislative District 21 candidates for Arizona state Senate and House of Representatives gave their views on what they feel is best for residents at a candidate forum Oct. 4 at Peoria City Council Chambers moderated by Arizona Clean Elections Commission. Above are Republican Sen. Rick Gray, running for re-election; independent candidate Kathy Knecht, challenging Gray; and two Democrats, Bradley Hughes and Gilbert Romero, who seek to unseat Republicans Tony Rivero and Kevin Payne in the House.

A veteran Republican legislator, a 12-year veteran of Peoria Unified School District Governing Board and two Democratic newcomers to the election process sat in front of a Peoria City Council Chambers audience Oct. 4 to give their reasons why they should be voted into office. All four are running in Legislative District
21. Two legislative veterans — Republican Reps. Kevin Payne and Tony Rivero — did not attend the candidate forum hosted by the Arizona Clean Elections Commission. Commissioner Natalie Sayer served as moderator. Sen. Rick Gray is seeking re-election, while independent Kathy Knecht, who is serving out her 12th year on the PUSD Governing Board, hopes to unseat him. Democrats
Bradley Hughes and Gilbert Romero are hoping to win the seats held by Payne and Rivero. Gray served three terms in the House and was appointed by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in January to finish Debbie Lesko’s term in the Senate. Payne was appointed to finish Gray’s term in the House. Rivero is seeking his third term in the House. In her opening state-
ment, Knecht said she was disappointed in the trajectory of the Legislature and said until there is a change in that body, there will be no change. “I’m ready to fulfill a collaborative effort going forward,” Knecht said. Hughes was born in Kentucky, lived there until after college at Louisville and has spent the last eight years in Arizona. He is a physician with two sons. Hughes said health-
Old Town Peoria has busy fall schedule The city of Peoria is hosting a series of events, food, theater, and live music in the heart of Old Town Peoria. Events are held indoors and outdoors at Peoria Center for the Performing Arts (PCPA), in Osuna Park, and on Washington Street in front of Fire Station No. 1 — Lucidi’s Distillery. Old Town is developing as a center for culture and arts as more programming and events are offered in that location. Every weekend this fall and winter, catch a variety of entertainment and food options: Listen to live music performances, eat locally, have a drink and enjoy the night. With plenty of space to run around, and pop-up games to play, the venue could be a great place for the entire family. Here are many options for active weekends as well as select weeknight evenings.
Upcoming events include:
• Music on the Plaza from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 outside the PCPA • Linda Ronstadt Tribute and Taco Tuesday 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 16 on the Plaza at PCPA • Food Trucks 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Distillery near 83rd and Grand avenues These new, family-friendly events will bring a variety of entertainment options to the Old Town area. care, public education and taking care of decades old corruption at the state Capitol are the reasons he is running for office. Romero called himself a community organizer, a labor activist and lifelong resident of LD 21. He voiced disappointment in Payne and Rivero and the sharp decline in education funding the past 10 years. All of the candidates placed education at the top of the list of their constitu-
ents’ three main concerns. Knecht said the reason for that is almost every part of our quality of life depends on education. Next on the list was healthcare. Hughes said corruption was third because of its presence, in his opinion it is around charter school funding. “Legislators are lining their own pockets with laws they’re passing,” Hughes said.
