Knowing when to start preparing for college can make a world of difference in parents’ and students’ anxiety. Early high school years are a crucial time for parents to help their kids ease the transition into adulthood. Working as a counselor at Great Hearts Glendale Preparatory Academy, the below fundamental tips will assist in keeping your child on track for college and future career success.
Freshman year

Have a conversation with your children about their passions and encourage extracurricular activities that align with those interests. It’s important to help your child make a good impression by allowing them to introduce themselves to college counselors early. Set quality time aside to go on tours of prospective colleges. This is important all four years, so try to fit one into each vacation. Help your children develop a love of learning so they are well prepared for college. School must be their “job,” so why not love it?

Junior year At Great Hearts, we discuss SAT test strategy with our students. If this service is not available at your school, you can research the tests that are best to take. It’s best to get 11th- and 12th-grade teachers for recommendation letters, so building those relationships now is important. This is a good time to start having conversations with students as to why they want to go to college. This line of questioning will also help determine what they are looking for in

Senior year Help your high schoolers research the various scholarships available and apply. Encourage them to send thank-you letters to all teachers who wrote recommendation letters. Make sure the child’s personal statement is complete and concise. Finalize a college list and start applying. The recommendation is for all families to complete the FAFSA by January 1. There are merit-based scholarships (not dependent on need) that cannot be awarded by some schools without a FAFSA on file.
