City sees drop in crime rate for 2018 BY CAROLYN DRYER Peoria Times Editor

Before Peoria Police Chief Arthur Miller began updating the council on his department, City Manager Jeff Tyne told the mayor and council the report would help them with their review in advance of the city’s yearly budget process. Overall crime decreased by 4.5 percent, response times have decreased slightly and are trending, and a new policing approach has been implemented, Miller said.

A man accused of killing a Peoria resident was arrested February 21 after claiming he was in a relationship with the victim. Christopher Jones, 26, was arrested after a woman called police and said she had found her brother deceased in his home after not hearing from him for several weeks. According to Peoria Police, they received a 911 call from a female stating that she entered her brother’s home in the 7300 block of West Montgomery Road to check on him since he had not been heard from for several weeks. When she entered the home, she said she found a man deceased on the second floor of the residence. She told police she exited the house and called 911. When officers arrived on scene and located the victim, a 59-year-old male who was

Miller referred to the department’s 2018 report, showing response times and personnel distribution at that time. “One suggestion was to realign, from 18 to 14 patrol beats with three officers in the purple area instead of one,” Miller said, pointing to a map of the city on an overhead screen. In the northern part of the city, above Bell Road, there was a large area where much of the land is not developed and two smaller purple-colored areas of central and southern Peoria are more densely populated.

“We hope to have faster response times,” Miller added. Hours per matrix have also been adjusted, Miller said, with officers going two hours later to provide overlapping of shifts. In addition, two more detectives have been reassigned to the Enhanced Fraud Investigation Unit. The department has eight police officer vacancies, Miller said.
