As winter begins to take hold across much of the world, here on Kaua‘i, the season unfolds in its own unique rhythm. The air grows softer, the ocean shifts to deeper shades of blue, and warm trade winds carry the scent of plumeria through the palms. It’s a time when the island slows, inviting us all to linger longer on the lanai, to listen to the waves roll in along Kalapaki Bay, and to rediscover the quiet joy that comes with being surrounded by nature’s beauty. Winter on Kaua‘i is not a season of retreat, but of renewal—a chance to reconnect, recharge, and be fully present in this extraordinary place we call home.
This season also marks the beginning of Makahiki, an ancient Hawaiian celebration that honors Lono, the god of peace, agriculture, and abundance. Traditionally, Makahiki was a time when the islands paused from labor and conflict to give thanks for the year’s harvest and to prepare for the blessings ahead. Feasts, games, and music filled the days, while offerings were made to ensure prosperity for the coming season. Here at Timbers Kaua‘i, we embrace that same spirit—of gratitude, reflection, and joy in community—as we welcome both familiar faces and new arrivals to our ‘‘ohana during these months of renewal.
Whether you’re watching the sun rise over the bay, walking along the trails of Hōkūala, or simply enjoying time with family and friends beneath the winter stars, I hope you feel the essence of Makahiki all around you: peace, abundance, and connection. On behalf of our entire team, I wish you a season filled with warmth, relaxation, and discovery. We look forward to sharing another beautiful winter together here at Timbers Kaua‘i.
Once again, we welcome Kūpīo Koholā (humpback whales) back to Hawaiian waters. While several whale species can be seen here year-round, Kūpīo Koholā make the incredible 3,000-mile journey from colder northern seas to our warm, shallow waters each year to give birth and mate, typically from November through May.
Some of the best places to watch the Koholā are from the Kaiholo Pool Deck, the Lobby Lānai, or the Owner-exclusive Hōkū Observation Deck on the fourth floor of the Maili‘ula Building.

Fall marks a special and critical time for two of Hawaiʻi’s most iconic native birds — the Nēnē (Hawaiʻi’s state bird) and the Newell’s shearwater (‘A‘o) and wedge-tailed shearwater (‘Ua‘u kani) — as they enter their respective breeding and fledging seasons.
From October through March, the endangered Nēnē begin their nesting season. Hōkūala is home to many geese and established mating pairs that you may see during your visit. Once a suitable partner is found, Nēnē mate for life, returning year after year to the same nesting areas. Their lively honking and gentle head-bobbing displays are a delight to witness. Pairs typically return in large numbers beginning in October, with nesting peaking between November and January. Females lay two to five eggs in shallow, down-lined nests. The eggs hatch after about 30 days, during which the female remains dedicated to incubation, leaving briefly only to eat or drink. Before each short break, she carefully covers the eggs with down to keep them warm and hidden from predators. The male remains close, guarding his mate and their nest until the goslings hatch — after which the family ventures out to the ponds and grassy areas to forage together.

Around the same time, young ‘A‘o (Newell’s shearwaters) and ‘Ua‘u kani (wedge-tailed shearwaters) make their first journey from their burrows to the ocean, guided by the moon and stars. This remarkable flight marks the beginning of their independent lives at sea. The ‘A‘o is an endangered species, while the ‘Ua‘u kani, though more numerous, faces threats from predation by feral cats and dogs — pressures that have placed both species on the protected list.
At Hōkūala, biologists Alan Silva and Diana Butler work closely with federal and state agencies to monitor, count, tag, and rescue stranded or downed birds. Wildlife protection is a year-round commitment, and fall is an especially active time as multiple protected and endangered species nest, fledge, and soar above our special place at Hōkūala.

Our wine dinner series has evolved into something truly special, an experience that brings together great wine selections, delicious food, and even better company. The feedback from owners, resort guests, and locals has been overwhelmingly positive, with many sharing how these evenings have created cherished memories and new friendships.
Under the expert direction of Cory Dotario, Food and Beverage Director, and Executive Chef Alex Amorin, each event is thoughtfully curated to pair exceptional wines with perfectly matched culinary offerings. Their collaboration continues to elevate owner and guest experiences with every pour and plate.
Our first dinner for 2026 will be on January 20th. Once again, we will welcome Jackson Family Wines. Some of you will remember that the Jackson Family Wines were featured during our first wine dinner in this series.
In addition to our elegant wine dinners, we are excited to introduce a new series of fun and engaging wine mixers. The first event in our Kalapaki Wine Mixer series will take place on March 4, 2026, featuring the acclaimed Duckhorn Portfolio of Wines. Each Kalapaki Wine Mixer will offer a lively, station-style tasting experience, inviting Owners and guests to sample a variety of Duckhorn’s finest selections paired with thoughtfully crafted bites. Our goal is to create a relaxed, social atmosphere where wine and food come together beautifully in the inspired setting of Timbers Kauaʻi.

Three years ago, Hurricane Ian brought devastation to Captiva Island and much of Southwest Florida. South Seas—at the very heart of Captiva and acquired by Timbers only months earlier—was among the hardest hit. The storm swept away guest areas that generations of families had treasured, leaving behind both physical and emotional loss. In the aftermath, Timbers moved swiftly, meeting an unforeseen challenge with urgency and resolve. The focus was not only on rebuilding what was lost, but also on strengthening the resort to withstand the storms of the future.
Through the hard work, dedication, and countless late nights of the Timbers team, every area damaged by Ian has now been restored. While the main hotel was destroyed, residential units are fully back, and plans are in motion to rebuild hotel accommodations with even more luxury, serenity, and longevity than before. In the meantime, two new additions are opening this year: Beach House, a restaurant on Sunset Beach with sweeping Gulf views, and Captiva Landing, a lively water play area designed for families. Both honor the resort’s legacy while infusing the island with fresh energy and new experiences.
For owners and guests alike, Captiva remains a rare place where time slows, charm endures, and sunsets turn each evening into a celebration. Looking ahead, Timbers is preparing an exciting new project for the luxury market—one that will resonate with those who feel at home at destinations like Timbers Kaua‘i and Timbers Kiawah. The spirit of Captiva, defined by its natural beauty and a rhythm that invites reflection, continues to offer new ways to experience everything that makes this island extraordinary.
