L’attrazione e l’empatia dei mammiferi verso i cuccioli è insita nei loro geni e imprescindibile per tutte le specie. L’aspetto degli immaturi suscita tenerezza, protezione, tutela, inibisce ogni violenza e provoca istintiva simpatia. Testa grossa rispetto al viso piccolo, occhi grandi e rotondi, orecchie piccole, corporatura paffuta, vocalità particolare e una certa goffaggine sono caratteristiche comuni a tutti placentati e riconoscibili immediatamente in tutte le specie. Una conformazione morfologica e etologica biologicamente adattata alla riproduzione della specie. Gli esseri che presentano livelli di complessità cerebrale mediamente superiore a quelli degli altri taxa animali hanno necessità di un periodo di sviluppo maggiore e di un periodo in cui formare la propria esperienza. Inoltre, fisicamente devono uscire da un utero materno che non è proporzionato alla mole dell’adulto: necessariamente devono nascere più piccoli, immaturi e quindi indifesi. Necessariamente hanno bisogno di cure parentali per periodi più o meno lunghi a secondo della grandezza e della complessità del loro cervello. I caratteri infantili servono proprio a questo: a stimolare la protezione e le cure della madre e degli altri membri della specie. L’uomo non sfugge a questa condizione, anzi, l’ha evoluta al più alto grado di sofisticazione poiché si protrae per molto più tempo rispetto alle altre specie. I caratteri infantili sono comuni a tutti i mammiferi. È per questo che l’uomo riconosce il cucciolo delle altre specie e ne è attratto come ne fosse un genitore.

È un riflesso quasi condizionato e inevitabile.

The attraction and empathy of mammals for young animals is inherent in their genes and essential for all species. The appearance of the immature animal arouses a sense of tenderness, protection, guardianship and inhibits all violence, while evoking instinctive sympathy. The large head compared to the small face, big, round eyes, small ears, chubby build, an unsual vocality and a certain clumsiness are characteristics common to the young of all placental mammals and immediately recognizable in all species. This is a morphological and ethological conformation biologically adapted to the reproduction of the species. Beings that have levels of cerebral complexity on average higher than those of other animal taxa need a longer period of development and a period in which to form their own experience. Furthermore, physically they must come out of a maternal womb which is not proportionate to the size of the adult and thus they must necessarily be born smaller, more immature and therefore defenceless. They therefore need parental care for periods of varying length according to the size and complexity of their brains. This is exactly what infantile characters do, stimulating the protection and care from the mother and other members of the species. Humans do not escape this condition. On the contrary, we have evolved it to the highest degree of sophistication since our dependence lasts for much longer than other species. Infantile characters are common to all mammals. This is why humans recognize the youngsters of other species and are attracted to them as if they were a parent. This is an almost conditioned and inevitable reflex.

Ovid - in the Metamorphoses - states that when the a bear cub is born in the den it is a shapeless creature and the mother bear gives it shape by licking it. Science confirms the bear’s premature birth, but you have to add the poetry of a mother's love.

Può avere molti fratellini, fino a 12 per giocare e contendersi le morbide mammelle della madre. E’ una preda molto gradita da lupi e linci, ma il suo mantello a strisce lo confonde con la vegetazione, e poi c’è sempre la mamma con la sua furia

She may have many siblings, up to 12 to play and compete with for her mother's soft teats. She is a very welcome prey for wolf and lynx, but her striped coat blends in with the vegetation, and then there is always her mother with all her fury to protect her.

Nascono ciechi e inetti, solo dopo un mese mangiano cibi solidi, la madre li nasconde in anfratti e tane, badando a non lasciare tracce di loro. Solo a 10 mesi sono forti abbastanza per diventare temibili predatori

Lynx are born blind and helpless, and only after a month do they eat solid foods. The mother hides them in hollows and dens, taking care not to leave any traces of them. Only at 10 months are they strong enough to become fearsome predators.

Settembre September

Appena nati se ne stanno un mese al sicuro all’interno della tana, senza il folto pelo che crescerà fulvo e morbido quando saranno svezzati. Giocheranno con i fratelli e sorelle imparando le furbizie che contraddistinguo i genitori e tutta la sua specie. E già, un volpacchiotto è un piccolo furbetto.

When newborn, she stays safe in the den for a month, without the thick hair which will grow soft and reddish when she is weaned. She will play with her brothers and sisters learning the tricks that distinguish their parents and all others of its species. And yes, a little fox cub is sneaky!

Nasce con il pelo scuro e la criniera diritta, sembra venuto da un’altra era. A sorvegliarlo c’è la madre con il mantello candido che acquisirà crescendo. Su di loro vigila lo stallone, una statua di marmo vivo

Born with dark hair and an erect mane, she seems to have come from another era. Watching her is her mother with the white coat that she will acquire as she grows up. The stallion, a living marble statue, watches over them.

Quando nascono sono bianchi e non si chiudono…a riccio, ma se ne stanno nascosti nella tana, come piccoli cioccolatini. Il muso fuori lo metteranno dopo un mese, ma di notte, per cacciare insetti con la madre. A otto settimane gli aculei sono pronti e loro sono indipendenti

When they are born they are white and are unable to curl up like a hedgehog, but they stay hidden in the den, like small chocolates. They will put out their muzzles after a month, but only at night, to hunt insects with their mother. At eight weeks of age their quills are ready and they are independent.
