Mr Dean De Santis
After a quiet chat with Dean and two of the boys over a pizza at Last Hoot, your Ed submitted a couple of questions to Dean to help this paper do the introductions. As a result, Dean has kindly supplied the following which provides a great insight.
1/. Birthplace, Family location and schooling
I was born in Dandenong (Vic), my father, an Italian migrant and my mother, an Australian. At the age of five, I then moved to the family farm at Nar Nar Goon (Vic) in 1984. I am the youngest of three siblings. My parents still live and run the farm where I grew up and it is always great to go back there to unwind with my kids. Schooling was interesting at Nar Nar Goon, there were a total of about 15 kids at the primary school, not to dissimilar to Falls Creek Primary
School. Education is something that I have always valued as a growth tool, one of the most valuable courses that I completed while working in Singapore was Human Synergistics training, the understanding of how to navigate a person’s individual perception of themselves and other people is something that I utilise daily.
2/. Career choices
Growing up on a farm, I initially leaned towards machinery operation and farming practices which led me to the horticulture and specialised turf/stadium industry. Although my real passion was in business and the idea of taking a service and maximising its potential from both a product and staffing perspective. After 20 years in the Elite Sportsturf Industry, I started my own Specialised Civil Construction company, providing many s

ervices like civil construction works, project management and consulting services. This civil company grew quite large very quickly to become an internationally operating entity within three years. I eventually sold the civil company to have more time with my young children. My career path going forward was planned around lifestyle choices for my family which inevitably led me to the best place on earth to raise three active boys, Falls Creek Alpine Resort and the wider North East Victoria area.

3/. Work opportunities and different positions – overseas and in Aus I have had many jobs and career changes over the years. Some of these were, working at a broiler farm at the age of 15 during the school holidays to earn some pocket money, steel fixing at the Olympic Dam Uranium Mine in central Australia, completing construction work at the MCG, consulting to the Qatar government for stadium and training pitches for the FIFA World Cup, consulting to World Rugby for the Rugby World Cup held in Japan, operating and consulting to the Singapore Government on the management of the Singapore National Stadium. The consulting work has led me to operate in many countries, predominantly throughout Asia and the Middle East as well as the USA and New Zealand.
4/. Family Life
I am currently living in resort full time with my three boys aged 10, 13 and 15. We absolutely love being in Falls Creek and the transition from Mansfield has been great with the support and engagement of the local community.
5/. Lake Mountain and the transition to Falls Creek
After a successful tenure as General Manager at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort, where I led operational enhancements and environmental initiatives, including infrastructure upgrades and snow play modernisation, I transitioned to the role of General Manager at Falls Creek Alpine Resort in January 2025. This move
reflected both a professional evolution and a personal alignment with the broader scope and strategic complexity of Falls Creek. After learning to ski here in Falls Creek in 1992, I have a great sense of pride that I am able to help shape the future for the next version of me (my boys) that may learn to ski in Falls Creek.
6/. Your thoughts on Falls Creek and possible improvements
Falls Creek is an incredible alpine destination with a strong community spirit and a unique year-round offering, but like any resort, there are opportunities to evolve. I see real potential in enhancing our infrastructure and refining how we deliver services, particularly around village access and seasonal operations, to better meet the expectations of both visitors and locals. Strengthening communication with stakeholders and embedding Alpine Resorts Victoria’s values of positivity, respect, safety, and environmental care into every aspect of our operations is a priority. I’m also focused on progressing strategic initiatives like the Lakeside Trailhead redevelopment, which is key to ensuring Falls Creek remains resilient, sustainable, and welcoming for generations to come. •
On behalf of the community Dean, we say welcome, and we all look forward to a productive future in what could be described as Victoria’s number one resort. Ed.

Can you help? We are looking for volunteers to cover a four hour shift, 12noon to 4pm on a designated day throughout the season. We would love to offer the Falls Creek story to more people throughout the week and on Sundays, especially during school holidays. Volunteer opportunities for "FC Museum 2024 Winter Volunteering" are now open. Like last few years, we've gone all high tech with our signup sheet. Click on the below web link & it will take you to the online signup sheet: https://volunteersignup.org/events/ share/644300
If you want to chat to someone about opportunities, responsibilities, expectations, please send an email and someone will get back to you. •
The first Legends Lunch benefitting the Falls Creek Museum was held on Sunday 8th June 2025 and was a roaring success. The event sold out and the indomitable Kerry Lee Dodd who was the event MC had to use her teachers voice to ask people who hadn't bought a ticket to please vacate seats at tables
to enable those who had purchased tickets to take part in the event.
The lunch and associated activities raised $788 for the Falls Creek Historical Society: $686 in tickets sales, $102 from donations and approximately $200 in the sale of Museum merchandise. Rosy from Traverse Alpine Group is already talking about hosting the 2026 event at a bigger venue!
Well done to all involved and thank you to all attendees for helping to make this fundraiser such a success. We even had some wonderful models showing off some of the fabulous vintage ski suits supplied by retail shop ‘I Dream Of Snow’ on the day for the fashion parade. •
This Week with DWA
The snow is well and truly here and the Disabled Wintersport team are ready to go here at Falls Creek. Our gear has had a great spring service with all of our adaptive equipment serviced, skis waxed and ready, any needed repairs have been made and new parts installed.
Our First DWA Experience for 2025 Bobby Bajram, no stranger to Falls Creek, kicked off the season for us with some time on snow last weekend, while he is here training for his Everest ascent. Bobby started out with some independent skiing on Saturday and then enjoyed some quality sit-ski time on Sunday. The Dynamique sit-ski is an ideal ski to enjoy some cruising around the mountain and the terrain in the Drovers and Towers areas was perfectly matched to the weather. Snowsports School again join DWA in partnership this season to ensure our members can progress their skills, increase their enjoyment and continue to enhance their snow experience.
DWA presents Falls Creek Fridays
Today Friday 27th, we kick-off our season long “Falls Creek Friday” program for everyone who has an interest in working with, supporting or just learning more about DWA. Remember, there are many ways to support DWA who play a vital role in making snow sports accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities. Even two or three days across the season is valuable to support this mission. Volunteering with DWA can be as simple as marshalling people during our camps program to be sure everybody is clear on where they need to be, up to working with an individual towards independent skiing or boarding.
The “Falls Creek Fridays” program will help in many ways by having DWA trainers and equipment available for learning and practice.
• Want to know little more about becoming a
volunteer, come and have a chat.
• Need some more time practising your sit ski technique, come and join a live practice.
• Need to understand more about adaptive snow sports dynamics, get on the snow with equipment and be supported by experienced guides.
• Want to practice more with adaptive equipment, this is the place.
The program will allow existing Guides to practice their skills in a safe manner and to
further qualify their skills from Secondary to Primary guide.
See you at the DWA Hub in Slalom Plaza next to Slides at 10.30 am, 2.00pm or both. Don’t forget the Meat Tray and Vegie Tray Raffle.
Everyone is welcome to join us at PowderKeg, after the “Falls Creek Fridays” session every Friday for the season. A time for a social chat, a cold drink, and to participate in the famous DWA Meat and Vegie tray raffles. Join us from 4.30pm on Fridays, enjoy some tunes and tell some stories. The raffle will be drawn around 6.00pm. We would love your support. For more information, visit disabledwintersport.com.au or drop by the DWA office in the Slalom Plaza. You can also reach out to Zac at fallscreek_camps@ disabledwintersport.com.au or Paul at paul. lamb@disabledwintersport.com.au.

On June 30th, Glenyse Peacock (from Rocky Valley Bikes & Snowsports) and I (Meredith Iaria from Vegitation) embarked on an epic ride from Airlie Beach to Port Douglas in far North Queensland - a journey spanning over 1,000 kilometres - to raise funds and awareness for Tour de Cure Australia.
The Tour de Cure Signature tour 2025 is more than just a cycling event. It’s part of an extraordinary organisation that funds pioneering cancer research, prevention initiatives, and support programs that directly improve lives. Being part of that purpose was an honour - but the journey began long before our wheels hit the road. Nearly a year earlier, after encouragement from friends and family, Glenyse and I made the decision to sign up. From that moment, we committed ourselves to an intensive training regime. Over the following twelve months, we cycled thousands of kilometres,

built resilience, and found ourselves part of an inspiring community of like-minded people all connected by a common cause. Together, we raised an extraordinary $30,838 - a figure we never anticipated when we first started. The generosity from individuals, local businesses, and organisations was humbling. A heartfelt thank you goes to Pretty Valley Lodge at Falls Creek and the Community Bank Mount Beauty and District for their incredible support - their generosity made a significant impact on our campaign.
I share this story from a place of deep gratitude. Grateful for the people we met along the way - riders, volunteers, supporters. Grateful for the stories courageously shared with us - of those fighting cancer, survivors, and those grieving loved ones lost. Grateful to the community that rallied behind us, and to family and friends who encouraged us, understood the early mornings, and forgave the missed events. Grateful for my body - for its strength, perseverance, and ability to keep going even when I wasn’t sure I could. And I am especially grateful for Glenyse. She
was my rock throughout the entire adventure - my emotional support, voice of reason, and steady presence during the most difficult moments. I truly could not have imagined doing this without her.
The energy started to build on day zero, as we picked up our riding kits and found our room allocations. Excitement mixed with nerves as we sat down to our first team dinner, surrounded by hundreds of riders and volunteers. As first-time riders entering the 2025 Signature Tour “bubble,” we were
stepping into the unknown.
On Friday, June 30th, our first official ride day began. As we clicked into our pedals and rolled out of the motel carpark, the reality of the next eight days began to unfold. We quickly immersed ourselves in the rhythm: breakfast, lunch, and dinner with our new lycra-clad teammates, ride briefings, snack stops, mechanicals, and plenty of laughs. For two riders used to mountainous terrain, the flat roads were unexpectedly challengingriding 100km+ on flat ground is its own test of endurance.
We learned how to ride in a pelotonhandlebar to handlebar, maintaining a straight line with trust in those around us. The volunteers and support crew were phenomenal. Their organisation and communication kept us safe, informed, and confident each day. Along the road, the toots, waves, and cheers from truckies, car drivers and passersby were a constant reminder of the goodwill surrounding our cause.
We knew this journey would be physically demanding - but for me, the emotional challenge was far greater. Each day brought reflection. Stories shared by fellow riders
reminded me of how cancer has touched my life, and the lives of so many others. In those moments, I reminded myself: I chose this “hard.” Those battling cancer don’t get to choose theirs. They don’t get to put a foot down when it gets tough or soothe sore muscles at the end of the day. That perspective kept me pedalling, no matter how difficult things got.
Rolling into Port Douglas and seeing my husband Frank, Glenyse’s daughter Erin, and the loved ones of our fellow riders waiting for us - it was almost overwhelming. Tears flowed. We did it. We set a goal, we trained, we fundraised, we rode, and we made it.
I am beyond proud of what Glenyse and I achieved - and I’m grateful beyond words for everyone who was part of this incredible experience. Tour de Cure wasn’t just a bike ride — it was a life-changing journey of hope, resilience, and unity in the fight against
cancer.
If this story has inspired you to support Tour De Cure by participating an event or ride additional information can be found at www. tourdecure.com.au •
A special thanks to Meredith Iaria for this very personal and emotive article and thanks to the two ladies Meredith and Glenyse Peacock for such a brilliant effort for this very worthy cause. A sincere well done from the whole community. Ed
With cold temperatures and regular snowfalls over the past week, Falls Creek is in fantastic shape right now. Groomers have been working their magic, and the trails are holding up, great conditions for everything from easy classic laps to big-volume skate sessions. Whether you're getting out there for the first time, logging some training hours, or just out for a social ski, it’s a great time to be on snow. Catching Up with Local Athlete Jayden Spring
This week, we caught up with national team skier and part-time Mount Beauty local Jayden Spring to hear about his recent European racing season and what he’s most looking forward to this Aussie winter. You’ve just wrapped up another European season. How did it go for you this year? Any standout moments?
“This European season was filled with highs and lows,” Jayden reflects. “I dealt with illness and fatigue, which taught me some valuable lessons about what my body can handle training-wise.” But through the challenges came a real highlight: an impressive 18th
on in
place in the sprint time trial at World Juniors in Schilpario, Italy. “That result definitely made the tough parts worth it.”
How has the start of the season been at Falls Creek so far?
“It’s been amazing to be back,” Jayden says. “The grooming at Falls has been excellent, and I’ve been loving my long sessions out on the trails, just soaking up the views and the great weather.”
You spend a lot of time training here. What do you love most about skiing at Falls Creek?
“Definitely the views and snow quality,” he says. “I’ve skied all over the world, and honestly, on a good day, Falls Creek is impossible to beat.”
What’s your all-time favourite session up here?
“A three-hour easy skate with mates, up around McKay Loop, down into Pretty Valley and along the High Plains. It’s low intensity, so I can just relax, chat, and smell the roses.”
What are you most looking forward to this winter?
“Hands down, the Kangaroo Hoppet,” he says. “It hasn’t run in a few years due to poor snow, and I, along with so many others am absolutely itching to race again. It’s such a great event and a really fun social weekend up at Falls.”
Finally, any advice for fellow skiers heading into the season?
Jayden’s advice is simple and heartfelt: “Don’t take racing or training so seriously that it takes
the fun out of it. This sport is meant to be fun, so enjoy it!”
Wise words indeed. Best of luck to Jayden for the season ahead!

Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre recently co-hosted a heartwarming Biggest Morning Tea event alongside the local Red Cross branch, bringing the community together in support of cancer research. The event was a resounding success, raising over $300 for the Cancer Council through generous donations and enthusiastic participation.
Held in a welcoming and festive atmosphere, the morning tea featured a delightful spread of homemade treats, hot beverages, and friendly conversation. Community members gathered to share stories, enjoy the refreshments, and contribute to a meaningful cause.
A highlight of the event was the raffle, which drew significant interest thanks to a range of fantastic prizes donated by local businesses including Mount Beauty Real Estate, Lilli Pilli, Quaff, and Sassy Road who all contributed vouchers and products and prizes included a beautiful painting by local artist Shirley Hall, a handmade quilt from Lyn Hams, and a warm blanket donated by board member Janet Grealy. These generous contributions added excitement to the day and helped boost fundraising efforts. The raffle not only raised additional funds but also showcased the strong support and spirit of collaboration within the Mount Beauty community.

Last Thursday, Tawonga Primary School launched its first crosscountry ski trip for the season with perfect conditions - clear skies, beautiful weather, and freshly groomed tracks ideal for introducing beginners to the sport. The day marked the beginning of our sixday cross-country ski program, which runs throughout the season for all students in Years three to six. This all-inclusive program is designed to support skiers of all levels, from first-timers to experienced snow lovers. In addition to cross-country skiing, students also get the chance to participate in a downhill skiing program, further broadening their alpine experience.
Before heading up to the snow, students take part in a comprehensive ski preparation session at school. These lessons include ski safety, an introduction to the Snow Responsibility Code, hands-on practice with ski boots and equipment, learning the new vocabulary of skiing, and understanding how to check and interpret alpine weather conditions.
We were fortunate to have expert guidance on the day from Jacob Huseby, National Cross Country Team Coach from Snow Australia, who shared his top tips and techniques with the students. We also welcomed back Rosie Franzke, a former Tawonga Primary student and current member of the Australian Biathlon Team, who inspired our young skiers with her experience and encouragement.
