specific requirements, the free Wheelchair Home Assessment begins with a telephone consultation to determine which manual or powered wheelchair is most appropriate. For a powered wheelchair, an in-home visit is arranged with an experienced Healthcare Pro Wheelchair Specialist. There is no obligation to buy a chair, according to Healthcare Pro, and the customer is left with a quote for them to decide in their own time if they wish to proceed. As well as supporting customers directly, Healthcare Pro’s wheelchair specialists also work with occupational therapists and clinicians on referral, joint assessment or as part of a fully tailored service.

ABLEWORLD RUNCORN SET TO OPEN ITS DOORS Mobility retailer Ableworld is opening a new mobility and stairlift superstore in Cheshire this month. Ableworld Runcorn will be a company-owned superstore, joining its Ableworld St Helens and Ableworld Northwich stores in the thriving North West region. Innovative new smart watch for Permobil wheelchairs An integrated smartwatch solution has been launched that gives manual wheelchair users powerful tracking, monitoring and power assist capabilities. Users of the Permobil SmartDrive PushTracker E3 manual wheelchair can now use Mobvoi’s TicWatch E3 smartwatch for helpful fitness and health insights. When the smartwatch connects with Permobil’s manual wheelchair, individuals can drive hands-free. Through gesture-activated controls, users can start the SmartDrive feature with a tap on their TicWatch E3, which connects to the wheelchair wirelessly via Bluetooth.

Wheelchair users can track their daily activities with the SmartDrive and PushTracker app on the watch and on their phones. The SmartDrive app tracks wearers’ distance and battery usage, while the smartwatch counts pushes as the PushTracker. TicWatch E3 boasts advanced heart rate sensors that monitor heart rate in real-time when active and resting that are logged into a weekly graph. When the smartwatch detects any unusual heart rate changes, the user is alerted. Additionally, the sensors also monitor and record blood oxygen level at regular intervals throughout the day and night and track light, deep and REM sleep.

MIP UK launches continence care range Healthcare textile firm MIP UK, which provides products for hospitals and long-term care facilities throughout the UK, has launched its new washable Aurorra Chairpads and Floorpad range for a durable solution to help manage continence care. The range has high-level stainrelease properties, according to the provider, which makes it more energy efficient when laundered. The chairpads and floorpads are designed to blend with the user’s

furniture for a discrete continence solution. The Aurorra Chairpads and Floorpad products consist of three layers. The top layer is made of a comfortable quilted Aurorra material that possesses “excellent” stain-release properties. The core layer is an absorbent soaker, which combined with the resilient PVC fluid-proof barrier layer protects the client’s furniture; and the textured bottom surface helps the pad stay in place.

AKW LAUNCHES ACCESSIBLE SHOWER TRAY Bathroom specialist AKW has launched a shower tray that creates a level-access showering area to help customers with visual impairments. The Mullen shower tray comes with an intergrip clamping strip which grips and seals vinyl flooring in the tray, creating a watertight seal. Due to the flexibility of the clamping strip, flooring can also be fitted or changed after the tray and shower screen have been installed. End-users can maintain level-access showering when using floor tiles, and these fit under the clamping strip, with built-in tiling upstands for all-round integrity of the water seals.

TRADE TALK

Trade Talk Vuelift is the latest addition to Handicare’s portfolio of quality accessibility solutions offered to its network of business partners. THIIS meets one of the original inventors of the innovative Vuelift design to discuss the importance of luxury accessibility solutions such as this… Demand for homelifts across Europe is skyrocketing, with more people appreciating the life-enhancing Jesse Simmons impact of investing in a lift for their existing home compared to the cost of moving and all its associated disruption. The Savaria Vuelift is now available from Handicare Accessibility in the UK. This luxury glass homelift – Savaria’s flagship elevator – is making a bold style statement while creating accessible homes for customers to age in place in style. Vuelift is the latest addition to Handicare’s portfolio of quality accessibility solutions offered to its network of business partners. Since its acquisition by the Savaria

Corporation last year Handicare has increased its offering with products from across the Savaria family. HELPING PEOPLE STAY AT HOME Jesse Simmons, Savaria Special Projects Manager and one of the original inventors of the innovative Vuelift design, believes luxury accessibility solutions have an important part to play in changing people’s perceptions about what their later life could look like. The world’s ageing population wants to stay at home safely and independently in later life. And more of them want to do it in luxurious surroundings. He explains: “Our aim was to help people stay at home by providing an option that was affordable in comparison to moving. We wanted to create something desirable that

people would love, that was also easy to install into existing homes. A benchmark for future residential lift design. “Over the years, the design has evolved. We continue to out-engineer the competition so that the Vuelift is always one step ahead.” Vuelift models are self-contained solutions that include a fully integrated lift shaft so they fit seamlessly with existing architecture. For a trained lift installation crew, it’s almost hassle-free with very limited construction work needed. A win-win for both installer and homeowner. “The cost of building a lift shaft in older buildings can be prohibitively expensive. The Vuelift includes a standalone, integrated lift shaft with a steel frame that provides all the structural strength and stability

required without the need for a loadbearing wall. It’s an absolute gamechanger,” says Jesse. THE UK’S FIRST SAVARIA SHOWROOM Following Savaria’s acquisition of the Handicare Group last year, it’s now even easier for UK-based architects and luxury home developers to incorporate the extraordinary Vuelift into their designs for clients in search of the ultimate statement feature. As part of Savaria, Handicare expects to broaden its range of solutions that increase the independence of people in later life or those with disabilities. Its upcoming Savaria showroom in the West Midlands offers visitors the chance to experience these products first-hand. The latest addition is a Vuelift Mini. The Vuelift Mini’s versatile and efficient design fits against a wall, in a corner, in the middle of an openconcept living space or centred in a spiral staircase. It takes up 70cm2 less space than a traditional residential lift using only a 127cm diameter footprint so it’s perfect for any renovation projects with limited floorspace. The UK’s very first Savaria showroom will include a full suite of Vuelift information, plus working demonstration models of Handicare’s market-leading curved and straight stairlifts as well as the custom solutions provided by Garaventa Lift. Handicare Partners can contact their BDM to find out more about adding the Savaria Vuelift to their product portfolio.

CASE STUDY Adding a residential lift to a narrow terraced home The Vuelift Octagonal, installed in a terraced home in downtown Chicago, elegantly ascends through the centre of the open plan layout. The lift (pictured above) blends seamlessly with the design, becoming an architectural element in its own right. Glass elements are key to providing a more open and light-filled feeling for this smaller property, so the crystal-clear cabin and shaft of the Vuelift complement the aesthetic beautifully. The brief: add a residential lift to a narrow property while maintaining the open plan layout. The architect and builder working on this property faced an increasingly common design challenge in urban locations: maximising the living space in a smaller home. Usually this requires clever use of multiple levels, meaning that a home lift becomes a sought-after feature, particularly as people prepare their home for ‘ageing in place’. With a total width of less than eight metres, space was at an absolute premium for this building project. To ensure the lift was accessible to all areas and from all floors of the property, the lift needed to be located centrally in the layout. A traditional home lift would have been a visual barrier, breaking up the otherwise clear and open concept of the designs. The Vuelift, on the other hand, provided the ideal solution. As a prime example of how

a residential lift can provide accessibility and convenience with no compromise to the aesthetic vision of the designers, this installation was named ‘project of the year’ in Elevator World magazine. The Vuelift featured is the Octagonal acrylic model, using both through the floor and balcony attachment configurations, stopping on three levels, and spanning a total travel distance of around 6.8 metres. The freedom to place the Vuelift in any area of the home without concern for the structural integrity of older properties means builders can incorporate a personal house lift without compromising an open plan design. The free-standing lift shaft has a minimal footprint area while maximising cabin space, and transfers the weight directly to the ground floor, requiring a pit only 10cm deep. Thanks to the Vuelift’s simple design, installation in this narrow property was easy. Each component weighs less than 45kg and easily fits through standard doorways, through narrow halls, and up staircases without the need for specialist equipment. The lift was simply assembled within the property. The unique effect of including a Vuelift in the finished project provides a real benefit for this luxury property, but without the complexity of installing a custom lift. The Vuelift solution was a perfect finishing touch to this contemporary home.

Trade Thoughts What support can suppliers give to retailers when they release new products? With many manufacturers set to launch new products this year, including at this year’s RISE @ THIIS event, THIIS asked some mobility industry insiders to share their thoughts on the most effective methods for showcasing these…

34 / www.thiis.co.uk

Billy Finnie

Alastair Gibbs

One of the key objectives for suppliers when they bring a new product to market is raising awareness within the industry, and there is no better way we believe than for suppliers/manufacturers to help retailers by launching their new products or services at industry trade shows or through trade publications. “Having the opportunity to meet directly with suppliers is second to none. Speaking to the designers, the sales teams and the product managers; listening to what they have to say about their new products, how and where they see them fitting into the market, where they believe it will give you a competitive edge and how they will benefit your customer goes such a long way in the decisionmaking process as to whether you will work with the supplier. “Retailers attend these events fully committed to buying new products and forging new buying partnerships. The trade shows are of enormous benefit as it brings together a focused and interested audience whose main motivation is to find our what’s new to market, who’s doing what and to do some amazing networking. “As well as trade shows, trade publications also deliver fresh ideas, new products, and services right to our desks. The suppliers who invest in these platforms know they have a captive audience, and it helps us retailers so much by again improving brand and product awareness. “Another fantastic benefit of the trade show is the opportunity to promote your visit on yours and the supplier’s social media platforms, jointly increasing activity, interest and raising profiles.

As an established retailer I am amazed by the lack of understanding from many manufacturers and importers/ distributors when it comes to knowing what retailers want. “If we are a retailer of Product A with a proven track record and significant sales turnover, we do not want the manufacturer of that product advertising in the trade press and exhibiting at trade-only shows. The only possible reason for doing so is to attract more trade accounts to compete against me. “That often has a significant negative impact in so far as the existing dealer fears that the account may be removed. Or, more likely, the existing dealer will not wish to compete with another close neighbour using the same product and will therefore look elsewhere for a replacement product. “The product itself may be perfectly adequate, but no one wants to see their long-time investment and loyalty be subject to increased margin pressure when the only differentiator will be selling price. “What we want is closer partnership working that allows us to identify market potential and work together to maximise that potential. New products to a manufacturers range are a perfect opportunity to do a soft launch, with one-on-one time with existing dealers to get it to the front line. “Additionally, exhibiting at shows that are open to the buying public and end users or advisers is a great way to stimulate interest that is then channelled to the retailers in any given geographical area.

A manufacturer needs to provide a number of things to their retailers when they release new products. “Firstly, a representative turning up with samples to show the team is always welcome. This allows the team to get a good idea of what they are going to be selling, how it works, what the key features are and to see and touch the product – you cannot beat a hands-on experience. “If required, suppliers should also provide training, so retailers are able to talk knowledgeably about the product and can extoll and promote the product’s benefits when customers ring up, or call in asking for information. “The quality of the product images really matters. Robust and highresolution pictures that retailers can download quickly and easily are a must-have for any eCommerce business. “It also helps having images that show the product in use, as well as showing it from various angles. High-quality photos make products look more enticing, which also means (potentially) increased sales. “Point-of-sale display material is an important part of any retail business. It is the means by which a retailer can convince customers to purchase products. Having an attractive and well-organised point of sale display, increases the possibility of sales. “Pre Covid we used to receive a lot of product information directly from visiting sales reps, however, this has changed and, even now, with the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions almost gone, we are still not seeing many, if any reps.

Having weathered the impact of Covid many retailers are back to a fully operational status, so what does that mean now as trading is picking up and lost ground needs to be made up? Wellell UK, as a manufacturer and supplier into this sector, are introducing new products into those stores within the Wellell Partner Programme but we understand that simply supplying new product is not enough. “Showcasing products at trade shows and within relevant publications is a sure-fire way for retailers to be aware of new product innovation and the opportunities they present. “The next stage is the training and support that retailers desire to confidently present our products to their loyal customer base. So it’s paramount that as a manufacturer we offer the training, education and aftersales support to those retailers in their quest to confidently present our new products. “At Wellell UK Limited we have taken a further step by introducing two roadshows in 2022 to support our retail partners, taking our message out to them in their home town and showcasing the very products that they can introduce to their customers with a fully liveried demo-bus. “It’s been a great success, permitting us to showcase not only our products but also the launch and promotion of our new brand – Wellell UK Limited. “Working in this way with current and future retail partners will enable both them and their customers to benefit from what we offer.

A dedicated trade magazine helps get information out into the market without bombarding retailers with leaflets, e-mails, and phone calls. “It also helps me keep up-to-date with the latest developments and new product releases. “I am sure I am not alone in finding it a valuable resource. Reading how other people see the market and their approach to meeting the opportunities and challenges in it is fascinating. There is always something going on and not always what you expected. “I think retailers need to be able to see the product to assess whether it is something they can add to their product range. “It is very difficult to make a judgement on the suitability of a product without seeing it first. Personally, I believe most people, either trade buyers or end users, would prefer to see a product before deciding. “A trade show is an ideal venue to get suppliers and retailers together in one location to allow this to happen very efficiently. “We are looking forward to meeting retailers at the upcoming RISE @ THIIS show. If you are coming, please come and see us on our stand. “Among the products we will be showcasing at the upcoming RISE @ THIIS event is the new Blazer powerchair, which has been very well received by retailers so far.

The new store is more than double the size of the previous store

World of Mobility: Moving on up Family-owned mobility retailer World of Mobility moved to larger new premises in Brierley Hill in the West Midlands in March. The store used to be located in nearby Amblecote in Stourbridge, but after 19 years there was a need for more space to accommodate the growing business, so Richard Hulme, Owner of World of Mobility, made the decision to move to new premises. World of Mobility was established in 2003 by Richard’s uncle David Hulme and his brother-in-law, Trevor Lewis. Richard explains: “They both had a background in the mobility sector and I remember from a young age being introduced to some of the products,

like mobility scooters. I was able to ‘try them out’ when they were brought home for demo.” When the two men retired the business was passed to Richard and his father. In 2020, Richard’s father retired due to ill health, leaving Richard as the sole owner. NEW STORE Finding new premises was quite a difficult process, explains Richard. “We needed to stay local for our loyal customers but also find somewhere large enough for expansion. “It took approximately six months from finding a new premises to moving in including the renovation work.”

After moving to spacious new store premises in West Midlands recently Richard Hulme, Owner of World of Mobility, is excited to expand on his product range further and boost the oneto-one service it offers customers…

Richard adds: “The new store is more than double the size of the previous store. Customers can walk around freely and we have more space for demonstrations and stock. “The biggest advantage is that we have our own parking at the front of the shop and the site is a prime location as an army tank close by is a local landmark.” The new store, which is located at Unit 1a Delph Industrial Estate on Delph Road in Brierley Hill, stocks a large range of products from major suppliers, including Pride, Kymco, Electric Mobility, Sunrise and TGA Mobility. The store is best known for mobility scooters, explains Richard, both

new and reconditioned, but it also has a “well-stocked” shop featuring self-propelled wheelchairs, transport chairs, walkers, riser recliner chairs, stairlifts, footwear and mobility aids. Richard adds: “We have a local supplier for many of our living aids, most of which can be collected within a few hours if we haven’t got the stock or correct item.” With a bigger store premises, the store is able to showcase a range of riser recliner chairs for customers to try. It stocks brands such as Regency and Repose, local British companies that supply handmade bespoke chairs to customer specifications, with a wide range of fabrics and styles to choose from. It also stocks Pride and

which can be fitted at the customer’s home or in the shop and staff are able to provide assistance in the event of a breakdown. Stairlifts are supplied by Acorn, Brooks and Companion, and the store offers customers a free survey where by one of its engineers will come to a customer’s property to measure and assess a potential installation. As an accredited partner of Companion, which also offers a range of bathroom solutions, the store is able to offer customers the option of spreading the cost of an installation over a set term. A lot of repairs and maintenance are carried out in the store’s wellequipped workshop, with staff trained to complete servicing and maintenance on mobility products. The aim is to help get the customer back on the road as quickly as possible, explains Richard. Richard says that World of Mobility has a varied customer base and that the typical customer is over the age of 50 and looking for help with independence. The store also works with a local charity which helps out with supplying a young person with a wheelchair or powerchair three or four times a year, where perhaps a family, for example, do not have the

spare cash to purchase what they need. Richard comments: “We help facilitate this by finding a young person, funding the chair through the charity then holding a presentation night where the family and fundraisers attend.” Now that he has more store space, Richard has begun venturing into the electric bike market and he keeps a range in store for customer to demo or take away on the same day. He believes this will provide some

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES As with most retailers, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a “massive impact” on the business, explains Richard. “Being a family business we have no corporate backing so savings were used to keep the doors open. “During the pandemic we helped as much as we could while keeping everyone safe. We offered a call-and-collect service so that customers could get their essential items, ensuring they still had some independence.” Fortunately footfall has since picked up, says Richard. “We have

noticed more people coming back into store, especially with the restrictions having being lifted.” The biggest hurdle, he says though, is getting customers back on the high street as they have become more reliant on online shopping rather than store based. Richard adds: “While internet shopping has its place I still believe we need the high street shops offering one-to-one personal service, especially with some of the mobility products on sale.” An e-commerce website is something that Richard is considering and was also partly a reason for relocating, so that he has the warehouse space for storage. At the moment though he says that his main focus is with the store and “offering the one-to-one personal service” to customers, which he thinks is needed in this industry. The mobility sector still faces some challenges over the next 12 months, explains Richard. “As a country we are facing some financial challenges. The cost of importing goods is always rising and its hitting suppliers hard with price increases. This in turn has an impact on retail prices and, in most cases, it’s a cost we cannot absorb.”

40 / www.thiis.co.uk

Richard thinks that the biggest challenge is in being able to offer customers competitive prices for the items they require. He says: “The cost of raw materials, components and shipping is constantly rising which has an impact on our sales.” STAYING COMPETITIVE Despite the global challenges, Richard remains focused on keeping his business as competitive as possible and providing excellent customer service. His store offers a free local delivery service on all large products with staff available to demonstrate the item and help get it into the customer’s house. Richard is also aiming to ensure that his business is stocking the best mobility products on the market going forward and expanding on the products that it currently supplies. He believes that the biggest step forward in the mobility sector is

lithium batteries, which help to make powered mobility products much easier to manage. Aluminium chassis scooters, like the Pride Alumalite, have been selling particularly well, he says. “We had a customer recently who could not manage any boot scooter and was in tears thinking she was losing her freedom. “We demonstrated the Alumalite and she managed it perfectly. She was overjoyed that she was able to maintain her independence.” Another scooter Richard has been impressed with is the Pride Endurance, which is based on the Apex Rapid, and comes with two lithium battery options. As for the future, Richard has “no immediate plans” for more stores but he will be looking to employ more staff when the time is right. worldofmobility.wixsite.com/ worldofmobility

LET’S GET IT CLEAR

What makes a good positioning belt? 4. Wheelchair attachments The previous articles in this series covered the anatomy of a pelvic positioning belt; choosing and adjusting a pelvic positioning belt; and the features and benefits of different belt closures. However, to achieve optimal positioning, it is important that the belt is attached to the wheelchair in such a place as the biomechanical forces on the occupant’s body are providing the best anatomical positioning of the occupant while providing optimal functional opportunities. The restrictions that we need to work around are that many wheelchair manufacturers do not supply any predrilled holes in the ideal places; often the chairs have accessories attached to the framework exactly where you wish to attach the belt; the manufacturers do not normally allow you to drill into the framework of the wheelchair without affecting the warranty; and, importantly, a fixed attachment point

does not allow for changing positions as the occupant’s needs change. CORRECT BELT ATTACHMENT POINTS Fixing a pelvic positioning belt in the correct position for that occupant is absolutely critical for the safety and optimum functionality of the occupant. Wheelchairs (as delivered by their manufacturers) may well have a simple belt fitted at the junction between the back support and the seat cushion support structure. This is not guidance as to where the belt should be placed when the occupant is in the chair. Since the manufacturer does not know where the positioning belt is to be positioned correctly for each occupant, this is just an easy place to fix the belt for transport from the factory. The belt itself also may be insufficient for the client’s needs (see earlier articles in this series1).

Figure 1 – Common examples of seating and wheelchair tubing

42 / www.thiis.co.uk

In previous issues of THIIS in the Let’s Get it Clear series1, we have covered ‘What makes a good cushion?’ over seven parts. An equally important component of many seating systems is the array of postural support devices (PSDs) provided with the seating to complement the cushion and back support elements. This is the fourth in a series covering PSDs, where we look at the means to attach positioning belts in the position you require them to be fixed to provide the desired results, despite the presence of in-the-way ‘furniture’ on a chair, and without needing to drill into the framework.

Dr ter Haar has been involved in seating and mobility for over 30 years, including lecturing internationally and developing international seating standards.

Sadly, wheelchair users around the world have died from suffocation due to slipping (submarining) under their positioning belts, sometimes due to these belts having been left at the back support-seat junction giving a 45o angle across the pelvis, in the position where you might expect transport safety belt (restraint). This was the reason that BS 86252 was produced, to give guidance and instruction as to the optimum placement of belts and harnesses to

Figure 2 – Circular clamp

cover a client’s positioning needs, and, importantly, reducing the risks of harm to the wheelchair occupant. This article summarises the material in Annex D of BS 8625, which suggests various options to address the challenges of getting the pelvic positioning belt in the right position. WHAT TO ATTACH TO The first challenge is the variety of tubing and extrusions used by different wheelchair manufacturers, as illustrated in Figure 1. It would appear that most wheelchair manufacturers select the materials for their chair frameworks for structural support of the occupant, for the wheelchair accessories such as wheels and casters, and, presumably, for aesthetics. Too few seem to bear in mind the range of positions and functions required for the different postural support devices which will be mounted on the chair. WHAT TO ATTACH WITH There are various commercially available accessories that cover the options listed in Annex D of BS 8625, and these are outlined below. There are YouTube videos available (courtesy of Bodypoint) to give guidance as how to mount the Bodypoint versions of these accessories, if you are unsure around how to go about it. The relevant link is indicated for each accessory, and is marked videox, and the actual link is listed in the reference list at the end of the article. Clamps Most manual wheelchairs have circular tubing (Figure 1 Type A), and the simplest way to get around these is with a circular clamp with a threaded bolt to hold them in place

(Figure 2). These are usually designed for 25 mm (1”) tubing, and have shims for use with 19 or 22 mm tubing. (Video3). Where there is circular tubing that it is not possible for the clamp to get all the way around the tubing (e.g. there’s the seat canvas or an arm

on a wide variety of frames. The clamp splits into two parts, and is adjusted by a bolt with a hollow centre to join the two parts. The hollow centre is threaded to take a bolt to fasten the support to the clamp. It is suitable for tubing Types A and B in Figure 1. (Video5).

Figure 3 – Frame clamp

support in the way), a frame clamp (Figure 3) or a band clamp (Figure 4) are good options. A frame clamp has an open-jaw: The clamp splits into two parts and is adjusted by a bolt with a hollow centre to join the two parts. The hollow centre is threaded to take a bolt to fasten the support to the clamp (Video4). A band clamp is a flexible stainless spring steel that fits into tight gaps under attachments (e.g. seat canvas)

Mounting brackets A seat tube mounting bracket is a mounting solution for chairs with sling seat upholstery with pre-existing threaded holes (e.g. Type C and D in Figure 1), or a solid seat base (see Figure 5). Elongated holes allow for fine adjustment of the position for attaching the support, and holes are positioned to bolt the wheelchair webbing attachments onto the bracket. The brackets illustrated

provide for a snug fit around the sides of a cushion, and can help to keep it in place. (Video6). T-slot fastener kits Many power wheelchairs are supplied with a single- or double-slotted extrusion at the side of the seat frame, which will accept a T bolt. A T-slot fastener kit provides a means to mount supports directly to slotted seat rails (see Figure 6). They are suitable for use with Type E and F frameworks shown in Figure 1. (Video7). MEASURING THE FRAME As we have seen in Figure 1, wheelchair tubing can come in a wide range of tubing sizes, and you will need to know the diameter of the tubing, or the track widths for the extrusions, to ensure that you have the right mounting hardware.

Figure 7 – Hardware Gauge

44 / www.thiis.co.uk

Bodypoint has created a useful gauge for measuring these variables (Figure 7) if you do not have the wheelchair manufacturer’s paperwork at hand.
