Welcome! This new year brings optimism that the UK mobility market is poised for further growth, especially with our ageing population helping to fuel an increasing demand for mobility and assistive devices. But as last year proved, new fiscal challenges may force some businesses to explore new ways of working. Find out what retailers think about this topic on page 37. If you're planning on a prosperous year of business then your dreams may need to be anchored in reality, virtual reality that is… Turn to page 16 for advice on how embracing AI can help your business (p16). Meanwhile, 3D printing is a technological possibility for suppliers looking to offer customised solutions for end users who can’t find what they’re looking for ‘off-theshelf’. On page 42 find out how this technology is helping to produce customisable adaptive seating. Elsewhere this issue, read about Access at Last, a Lancashire-based retailer that supplies products for customers with limited mobility (p21). As it looks ahead to opening a larger showroom this year, the retailer discusses its plans to increase its product offering and boost its website accessibility. With a new addition to its product range on the horizon, find out how specialist seating provider Tri-Chair is looking to boost the visibility of its product offering to mobility retailers and healthcare professionals (p31). Plus, don’t miss the Retailers’ Choice (p10) and Buyers’ Guide (p46) features to read about the best manual wheelchairs on the market. A round-up of the key trade stories for business leaders to digest

Getting down to business at Rehasense UK

Scooterpac turns up the heat The new Ignite Mini Sport from Scooterpac claims to have a feature that has never been seen before on a mobility scooter – heated handlebars with three adjustable warmth settings. This innovation offers real-world comfort for riders, keeping their hands warm on early morning outings in the colder months, while helping them to maintain better grip, control, and enjoyment all year round. It is a concept which builds on an earlier milestone in 2021 when Scooterpac introduced the heated seat to its original Ignite 8mph model. That same heated seat technology now features on the Mini Sport, delivering lasting warmth and comfort without adding bulk to its compact frame. The easily manoeuvrable 8mph scooter is equipped with auto headlights that activate when it senses low light and auto indicators that trigger simply by steering left or right making it more convenient for the customer when riding their scooter. Other features include keyless start technology, so the user can simply push a button to start, as well as a full-colour digital display, daytime running lights for extra safety, and a rear storage box, which are all included as standard.

Independent living solutions supplier Rehasense UK has announced the appointment of two new business development managers – Craig Vernon and Paul Groves. Craig will be responsible for the power add-on and active wheelchair portfolios and will be working closely with retailers in the Midlands and the north. Craig brings with him 16 years of industry experience, having started out as an engineer before moving onto the dealer side after four years. Paul will be managing existing retailers and generating new business opportunities in the Midlands and the south east with a focus on Rehasense UK's range of rollators and manual wheelchairs. Paul has a wealth of industry experience, having spent 12 years in various sales roles working with retailers, NHS trusts and healthcare organisations.

in brief... DISABILITY SMART IMPACT AWARDS' NOMINATIONS

Championing inclusivity National mobility retailer CareCo has announced that its new brand ambassador is Paralympic gold medallist Charlotte Henshaw MBE. The world-class paracanoeist and Paralympic swimmer will be working with CareCo to raise awareness of the mobility issues that people face, and the solutions available to help them live more comfortably, regardless of their age or ability. Charlotte, who overcame having her legs amputated above the knee when she was 18 months-old, has never allowed her disability to hold her back. Throughout the long-term partnership, Charlotte will be an advocate for CareCo, using social media and content to promote awareness of mobility issues across the UK. Charlotte says: “Health affects everyone in different ways, and by shining a spotlight on mobility issues, many people will realise they’re not alone and that independence is achievable.” CareCo recently celebrated opening its 37th showroom in the historic city of York, its sixth retail opening in 2025, with customers able to take advantage of free parking and WiFi.

Scaling new heights Portable mobility specialist eFOLDi has introduced a new accessory option for its Navigator powerchair, the Navigator Attendant Height Extension Bar. Designed to make guiding and manoeuvring the Navigator more comfortable for taller carers and attendants, the new Attendant Height Extension Bar raises the height of the Navigator’s handles to create a more natural, ergonomic hand position when driving the chair from behind. With three adjustable height levels, attendants can quickly set the bar to match their height and preferred driving position,

Business Disability Forum’s Disability Smart Impact Awards 2026 are open for nominations, marking a new chapter in recognising the importance of disability inclusion and the organisations driving positive change. This year’s awards have been renamed to focus on impact, reflecting the difference that inclusive business practice can make for disabled employees and consumers. Enter via businessdisabilityforum.org.uk before 21 January 2026. ROLLZ TO DISTRIBUTE TOPRO ROLLATORS Dutch mobility aids manufacturer Rollz International has confirmed that Rollz Mobility UK is taking over distribution of TOPRO’s range of rollators in the UK. Retailers will now have one central point of contact for both Rollz and TOPRO products. Rollz Mobility UK will manage orders and deliveries, service and warranty, spare parts and aftersales for all TOPRO products. The full range remains available and existing service commitments remain unchanged. DRIVE MEDICAL BRAND TO MAKE ITS MARK

encouraging a more upright stance and helping to reduce strain on their back, shoulders and wrists, particularly over longer journeys or prolonged periods of use. The Navigator’s existing moveable attendant control attaches directly to the extension bar and operates exactly as it would without the accessory, ensuring the chair remains easy to use with no compromise in responsiveness or control.

Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare has announced that it is returning to its original Drive Medical brand across all markets. The firm states that the move reflects both a return to the company’s roots and a brand platform designed to support continued leadership, future acquisitions, and global partnerships. The rebrand will be phased across all communications, products, and corporate materials to ensure a seamless transition for customers.

Giving mobility aids a second life PhysioNet has a simple but powerful mission: to provide surplus physiotherapy and mobility equipment to children and adults with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries... What began in 2005 as a small operation founded by Peter Thompson has grown into a nationwide volunteer-led network supplying life-changing equipment to communities that would otherwise go without. Working solely through volunteers, UK-based charity PhysioNet now operates three main depots in Yorkshire, Essex and Gloucestershire. These hubs are the heart of the charity’s operations, where donated equipment is received, cleaned, checked, repaired and prepared for shipment overseas. The pace of activity has increased dramatically in recent years. In the last 12 months alone, the team has dispatched the equivalent of 20 40-foot containers packed with mobility aids and physiotherapy equipment. Across its 182 shipments to date – including 23 specifically to Ukraine

6 | News, deals & people | thiis.co.uk

– PhysioNet, in partnership with the Wheelchair Foundation, has delivered equipment to 46 countries worldwide. The scale of support is impressive. It has included donating over 20,000 wheelchairs, along with 58,000 other mobility aids, from crutches and walking sticks to commodes and shower chairs. Its donations represent an estimated value of over £25 million – resources that would otherwise have gone to waste. INVITING DONATIONS One of the biggest obstacles PhysioNet faces is that donated items are often incomplete. Wheelchairs frequently arrive without footrests, and specialist paediatric equipment may be missing essential components. These items are usually donated because of age or wear, but many could be restored to full working order if the right spare parts were available. This is where the charity hopes the mobility and access trade community can step in. Many companies hold old or obsolete spare parts – no longer commercially useful, but potentially invaluable to PhysioNet. A simple footplate, bracket or clip may be all that stands between a wheelchair being scrapped or being shipped overseas to drastically improve someone’s quality of life. PhysioNet collects donations from across the UK and can often arrange pick-ups of small but important parts while travelling through different regions. The charity also has additional collection hubs in places such

as Inverness, the Isle of Man and Norwich, helping volunteers gather and consolidate equipment from more remote areas. Once donations reach a depot, they are inspected by teams of experienced specialists – technicians, engineers, physiotherapists and electricians – who ensure items are safe, functional and appropriate for reuse. Nothing goes to waste: even equipment that cannot be repaired is carefully stripped for salvageable parts that may complete or restore another item. IMPROVING LIVES The charity also recognises that providing equipment is only part of the solution. Its website hosts a wide range of equipment manuals for partner organisations to reference, and volunteers have undertaken training visits to many countries to ensure that donated items are properly prescribed and adjusted to the needs of each user. When used correctly, mobility equipment can be life-changing, but poorly prescribed or fitted equipment can cause harm. PhysioNet is committed to ensuring its donations truly improve lives. As PhysioNet continues to grow, so does its need for volunteers to support depot work in North Yorkshire, the South East and the South West, as well as physios and OTs able to travel overseas, with expenses paid. Manual CHOICE wheelchairs THE RETAILERS’

Wondering which manual wheelchairs are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight a product that stands out for them…

Quickie QS5 X by Sunrise Medical “The Quickie QS5 X is an ultra-lightweight folding wheelchair designed for users who want a strong, practical, and easy-to-manage chair for everyday use. "Built from high-strength aluminium, it offers an excellent balance of durability and low weight, making it particularly well suited to frequent lifting, folding, and transport in a car. “A key feature of the QS5 X is its FreeFold folding technology, which reduces the effort required to fold and

unfold the wheelchair. This makes daily handling simpler and less physically demanding, especially for users or carers who need to store or transport the chair regularly. When folded, the chair remains compact and easy to manage. “Despite its lightweight construction, the QS5 X delivers a stable and efficient ride. The frame design helps maintain rigidity, supporting confident self-propulsion and smooth handling both indoors and outdoors. It is available with a range of configuration options, including different seat sizes and footrest styles, allowing it to be set up to suit individual needs and preferences. “The Quickie QS5 X is also designed with safety and reliability in mind, offering a robust build suitable for everyday use. Its thoughtful engineering ensures long-term performance while remaining simple to maintain. “A versatile and dependable folding wheelchair, the Quickie QS5 X is an excellent choice for users seeking a lightweight, easy-to-transport chair that does not compromise on strength, comfort, or everyday usability.”

Escape Lite Wheelchair by Performance Health “The Escape Lite Wheelchair continues to stand out as one of our best-rated wheelchairs and has done over many years. It has earned the trust of customers looking for a dependable, versatile, and welldesigned mobility solution that meets a wide range of needs. “One of the key reasons we rate the Escape Lite so highly is its excellent range of size options. It is available in three different seat widths – narrow, standard, and wide – allowing users to choose a wheelchair that offers the right balance of comfort, support, and manoeuvrability. This makes it suitable for a broad spectrum of users, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach as with many other wheelchairs on the market. “The Escape Lite also offers flexibility in how it is used. Customers can choose between attendant-propelled models for assisted use, or self-propelled versions for those who want greater independence and control. “This adaptability makes it a practical long-term choice, whether mobility needs are temporary or ongoing. The brakes are simple to use on both models and the wheelchair folds up neatly and quickly when transporting or storing. "The Escape Lite is available in a range of modern colours, helping users select a wheelchair that reflects their personal style rather than settling for a purely clinical/grey look. “Reliable, adaptable, and thoughtfully designed, the Escape Lite Wheelchair combines comfort, choice, and practicality. Its popularity with customers speaks for itself, making it a well-deserved favourite.” Julia Phipps Director of The Ability Superstore www.ability superstore. com

Invacare Action 2 NG Wheelchair by Invacare UK “At TPG DisableAids we stock a full range of manual and powered wheelchairs which range from very inexpensive occasional use manual chairs through to highly specific chairs costing several thousands of pounds. “Our favourite chair in the manual mid range is the Invacare Action 2NG. Whilst it may not be the lightest or the least expensive, it is a really reliable mid-range chair that can be specified and adapted to suit many, many clients. “The range of sizes and accessories allow us to tailor it to many that are starting to spend longer in the chair than just occasional trips out. “The positioning and adjustability along with the ability to accommodate high quality pressure care seating make it a firm favourite with staff and

Alastair Gibbs Managing Director at TPG DisableAids tpgdisableaids. co.uk customers alike. “This is of course backed up by the massive range of spares and technical support that Invacare offer, all of which is based in the UK. The support of a clinical territory manager that can assist on the more technical assessments helps too.”

Agile Wheelchair by Karma Mobility “The Karma Agile wheelchair is a lightweight, stylish and highly adaptable wheelchair designed to give users greater freedom and comfort every day. It offers a choice of seat widths, 16”, 18” and 20”, and two choices of depths, 410mm and 460mm, allowing the user to find the perfect fit. “The chair frame is compatible with 14”, 22” and 24” rear wheel sizes. The user can go from a transport chair to a self-propelled wheelchair by adjusting the conversion plate and switching the rear wheels. Its quick-release rear wheels make folding, lifting and storing exceptionally easy, making it ideal for travel or compact living spaces. “The standard flip-back armrests make moving from side to side easy and quick. Meanwhile, the 80-degree removable footrests ensure a safe transfer into and out of the wheelchair. Despite its lightweight frame, it offers impressive durability with a 125kg user weight capacity. This manual wheelchair also offers crash-tested safety for use in vehicles. “Besides the standard single layer upholstery, a double layer upholstery with the tension-adjustable backrest is also available. It uses velcro straps to change the curve of the backrest according to user’s Karen Sheppard body curve. The Karma Agile is the perfect choice for Managing anyone seeking a dependable, easy-to-use wheelchair Director of People that enhances mobility and independence. Optional First Mobility upgrades include the flip-back, height adjustable peoplefirst armrests and elevating footrests.” mobility.com

It features a lightweight aluminium frame at 11.6kg which makes transportation and storage extremely easy for the end user. It comes with a half-folding backrest and quick-release footrests on the self-propel model. The grey two-tone wipeable upholstery offers a stylish finish and also makes it easy to wipe clean. “The chair features handy rear pocket for storing small items and desk-style armrests to allow easy access to work surfaces. “One of the great features of this chair is the long-reach brakes on rear tyres which can be easily activated by user or attendant for stable parking. “The 17” seat width version takes a maximum user weight of 18 stone whilst the 20” seat width model take up to 20 stone user weight. “We sell both the attendant and self-propel models in our showroom as it is a great entry level chair for customers looking to use it occasionally.”

Plan for 2026 success! Find out how your vision for a successful retail business this year is anchored in reality – of the AI kind… Imagine this… It’s January 2027, and you’ve just celebrated the New Year like never before. This is because, in 2026, something shifted. You didn’t just hit your goals, you smashed them. You exceeded what you thought possible and now you’re standing in a moment of triumph. But that future doesn’t manifest from hope. It shows up because you planned for it. Because you acted differently. Because you saw what was coming – and responded. Below, we build backwards from that future. But first, let’s ground ourselves in what’s already true today – especially when it comes to AI – because denying that reality is the most significant risk of all. HOW AI IS RESHAPING WORK To treat AI as a distant possibility is to ignore the signs all around us. Multiple

16 | Insight | thiis.co.uk

sources show that AI is not coming, it has arrived. A Sky News report recently highlighted how roles in sales, customer service, financial advice, and content creation are already under serious threat. AI’s reach is not limited to low‑skill or repetitive jobs. Even roles often considered ‘creative’ or ‘strategic’ are on that list of exposure. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that nearly 40 per cent of all jobs could be affected by AI, with some roles profoundly transformed or displaced entirely. A recent UK academic measure, the Generative AI Susceptibility Index (GAISI), shows that almost all jobs have at least some exposure to AI already — meaning even if your role seems ‘safe’ parts of what you do can be done by AI. These aren’t speculative warnings. They are signals and trends being lived

through today. So, when we envision January 2027 as transformative – it’s not unrealistic or naïve, it’s necessary. REVISIT THAT JANUARY 2027 VISION If in January 2027 you’re celebrating the best year your business has ever had, what had to shift in the preceding 13 months, especially given the AI currents already in motion? If AI is powering search, content filtering, and recommendation engines, your business must speak the language of algorithms and human desire. Being ‘findable’ now means simultaneously ranking in intelligent systems and emotionally resonating with your ideal customers. You’ll need to build content, signals, and relationships that satisfy both the machine (search, AI assistants) and the human (trust, story).

Your prospects in 2026 will already be using AI tools themselves – to help them research, narrow options, ask questions, predict pricing and compare solutions. That changes acquisition. It means that you’ll compete not just against other human businesses, but against AI that pre-vets your offer. To counteract this your messaging needs to anticipate AI‑led comparisons. Your onboarding must also stand out amid algorithmic decision-support assistants. Acquisition becomes a dance with both your human audience and the AI they consult. HOW CUSTOMERS BUY FROM YOU Imagine your customer is in conversation with their AI assistant – or has already asked ChatGPT about your product… Your buying process has to integrate seamlessly with that. Try to offer AI‑friendly tools: use product configurators, chat assistants, and summary interfaces that AI can analyse. Your customers’ purchasing decisions need to be ‘AI‑friendly’, with structured data, clearly defined benefits and transparent logic. If you enable AI-assisted pathways you will allow prospects to hand off to a human when needed, but let the AI carry much of the load. The retention of your customers in 2026 will be about using AI to surface signals of churn, upsell opportunities, and content gaps, and then having a human respond. The business that wins is the one that uses AI to predict who’s slipping away and uses automation to deliver timely interventions. It also needs to maintain the human touch. Systems will increasingly manage loyalty, but they’ll be won by the human heart. Your reputation isn’t just reviews and referrals. In 2026, AI engines will be scoring you – taking user feedback, sentiment, signals, social proof, and building proxy reputations. If your brand isn’t generating positive signals for AI systems, the algorithms may demote or ignore you – no matter how strong your product is. So, try to invest in trust, transparency, consistent service, and third‑party validation. You’re building a reputation for both machines and people.

“The business that wins is the one that uses AI to predict who’s slipping away and uses automation to deliver timely interventions” HOW AI INFLUENCES DECISION-MAKING By 2026, every major business decision you make in marketing, operations, pricing and hiring will be augmented or challenged by AI insight. Try not to treat AI as optional or peripheral – it needs to become your second brain. The question isn’t ‘Will I use AI?’ it should be about how you use it, how you train it and how you guard it. You have to choose your three wishes – intentionally, strategically, ethically. If you ignore AI, you risk falling behind and being irrelevant. To move from where you are today towards success in January 2027, there are a few steps you can take which are grounded in the reality of AI’s march. Tools like GAISI (or equivalent models) can help you to estimate how many of your business functions are already within AI reach. You also need to map out which tasks in content creation, customer service, reporting, and marketing are most exposed. Start with low‑risk, high-impact uses for AI, such as automating your admin, drafting content and summarising data). Try to experiment publicly, gather feedback, and refine. Your team needs to be trained how not to fear AI, and to instead use it. ‘AI literacy’ and ‘prompt engineering’ should be regarded as core competencies, so try to reward those who embed AI into workflows. Encourage public reviews, testimonials, and case studies and then try to create content that aligns with how AI scans and values authority. It is also worth monitoring AIgenerated content about your brand (e.g. how ChatGPT or search assistants talk about you) so you can work on shaping it. Try to anticipate the AI touchpoints in your buyer’s journey. You can provide structured pathways that AI systems can parse. By all means you should allow for “call a human” paths, but

make AI‑driven paths delightful too. Work on evaluating the roles people perform in your business. You need to ask yourself if they are better replaced, supplemented, or reimagined? You need to automate repetitive tasks to free human energy for high-value work. AI can help with forecasting, resource allocation, and identifying bottlenecks. Try to set KPIs that reflect your AI health. ‘How often does ChatGPT mention me?’ isn’t silly as a metric anymore. WHY THIS MATTERS FOR SURVIVAL AI isn’t a passing phase. There is a shift in how decisions are made, and how value is created and captured. The organisations that ignore it risk being bypassed, while the organisations that lean into it — combining human values, creativity, and empathy with AI’s scale, speed, and insight — will redefine what’s possible. So yes — when you imagine January 2027 as your celebration moment, make sure your foundation reflects the truth we already see. Growth is painful; change is painful, but nothing is as painful as staying stuck – and the truth of it is that it’s up to you. 2027, here we go!

A passion for making a difference At the heart of Access at Last lies a passion for empowering individuals to live fulfilling lives… Access at Last (AAL) is a Lancashire-based business that supplies services and products designd to enhance the quality of life and independence of customers with limited mobility. “Our passion is our customers – we want to support them for as long as they need us,” says Stephen Pritchard, managing director of AAL. Stephen originally ran a website, www.accessatlast.com, that arranged

accessible holidays and that is where his passion for helping people with moving and handling and living with the challenges associated with reduced mobility began. He explains: “I came up with the idea of enableliving.com as a one-stopshop in 2018 but I didn’t have the time to really focus on it. The dream was to have one place for people to come when their situation changes due to an injury or illness.”

Stephen knows, from his own experience as a wheelchair user, the value of a one-stop-shop that supplies solutions for accessing the house and carrying out day-to-day activities. He continues: “When the Covid pandemic came, everything literally stopped and that gave us the opportunity to focus on enableliving. com and we created what we have today, a great place that gives people the options they need.”

“I love helping people and I am very lucky to be able to do that every day at work” HELPING PEOPLE As managing director, Stephen oversees the day-to-day operations of the business. “One minute I can be talking to a supplier, the next, I am demonstrating a product in our showroom, and then perhaps seeing a customer in the afternoon,” he explains. “One of the things that I truly believe sets AAL apart from many similar businesses is that as a wheelchair user myself I can really empathise with many of the people that contact us every day. “I love helping people and I am very lucky to be able to do that every day at work. We have an amazing team who all share my passion for helping people live as independently as possible and take the time to offer expert advice on everything from hoists and ramps to wheelchairs and beds.” Robert Wilson, AAL’s sales and marketing manager, has been with the firm since 2018 and Stephen regards him as his “right-hand man”. They work closely together to oversee the general business and marketing strategy while also working with different departments to increase sales and traffic to the website. Stephen recalls: “Robert first came to me for some interview practice and as he puts it, “Stephen sold me the dream, and I’ve never looked back!”” Angela Townsley is one of the longest-serving members of the team, having been with AAL for over nine years. As logistics manager, Angela has a varied role which includes being responsible for overseeing packaging, national and international deliveries, palletising items for delivery, monitoring stock control, updating customers on delivery times and raising purchase orders. Service manager, Stephanie Lunt, is responsible for a range of duties which all combine to ensure the smooth running of the office. On a day-to-day basis, these can include processing orders and quotes, answering customer enquiries, planning equipment servicing and managing the service reports, raising LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment

Regulations) certificates and booking engineer visits. ACCESSIBLE SHOWROOM AAL’s showroom opened in the town of Burscough last year as Stephen felt that customers wanted to see a selection of products for themselves, especially the hoists. It seemed that not many businesses were offering a showroom environment for moving and handling equipment in the northwest and he wanted to show how these systems could benefit customers in their own home. Stephen comments: “When I first had my accident, I had no idea what I needed in terms of help with moving and handling and had I been able to actually see the products for myself in such a showroom it would have certainly helped and removed some of the stress.” One of the main reasons for the showroom’s location was that it was accessible. Stephen says that it is not always easy to find commercial property that is already accessible and he did not want to spend a small fortune on adaptations. Thankfully,

there were no real challenges in getting the showroom ready as it was already ideal in terms of location and accessibility As the showroom is not based on a high street there may be little in the way of passing trade but most customers will come to the showroom specifically to see it. They can either book an appointment or just come along for a coffee and a chat. “We are not into the hard sell and will happily offer advice without obligation,” says Stephen. The business has been flourishing and Stephen is already looking to expand into a new unit next spring that will have more showroom space and storage facilities. Having a physical showroom is important for people who want to see, touch, feel and test the products, says Stephen. “We welcome that and are happy to go through all the options available. For example, they might turn up thinking they need product ‘A’ but by learning more about them it may well be that product ‘B’ is a better solution. “I think when people see that I am a wheelchair user they relax as they have the added peace of mind in knowing

that I have a degree of understanding and can truly empathise with what they are going through and the daily challenges they have to face, as does Robert, as he has known me for so long and this makes conversations easier.” Many customers that come to the showroom are looking for a rollator, shower chair or a hoist for the home. Most are quite local, and often from the Ormskirk, Southport and Preston areas, but the showroom has also had people drive from as far as Hull to visit. The website, on the other hand, attracts customers nationwide. Fortunately, the business is well equipped to help with repairs and servicing for all of its customers regardless of where they might live. Stephen says: “We have a national network of engineers that we vet and are trained on all the equipment we supply, and this national coverage provides us with greater flexibility to get out to remote locations. We also work together with our suppliers and to support all our customers.” PASSION FOR HELPING PEOPLE There’s an amazing depth of knowledge within the business and Stephen says that he and his staff can resolve almost any challenge that is presented

Staff are dedicated to helping customers find the right solution for them

to them to help a person live more independently. “I know how frustrating it can be when you call a business and no one picks up the phone, so we have a three-ring pick-up policy,” he adds. Stephen says he encourages his team to try to understand why people can sometimes be stressed or upset on the phone. “When you understand how simple tasks such as getting out of bed, getting into your wheelchair or just how daily life is more of a challenge if you have a disability you can empathise with the person you are talking to. “I encourage staff to listen to the customer, and let them finish what they are saying. By doing this that gives us a full understanding of their situation, which in turn helps us to recommend the correct solution.” BESTSELLING SOLUTIONS Moving and handling is a particular passion, Stephen says, as there are a lot of people doing it badly by supplying the wrong solution, such as a straight rail ceiling hoist for someone that wants to use the whole room. He continues: “If you don’t get the ceiling hoist installed correctly first time, there is more upheaval to modify it. The hoist needs to be operational 24/7, so our aim is to ensure we take

“We have a national network of engineers that are trained on all the equipment we supply” the time to understand the customer’s needs before installation to ensure we get the job done correctly, first time.” It seems to be a formula that works. AAL gets a lot of referral business from customers as well as from suppliers, and Stephen says, that with many customers becoming friends over the years they must be doing something right! Adjustable beds and rollators have evolved a lot over the last couple of years and continue to be popular with customers, Stephen says. Meanwhile, innovative lifting devices, such as those from GoLift, a Canadian firm, have also impressed. Stephen explains that these devices can lift from shallow ceilings, making them perfect for listed buildings with low ceilings. Glide sheets and turning mattresses have also evolved in recent years and

make a real difference to bariatric users, Stephen says. While the showroom is thriving, the website has a vital role to play, says Stephen. “The reason you need an online presence is because people with disabilities aren’t always able to type and may not be confident on the phone. So, if they can contact you electronically and easily you are giving them a place for a safe conversation without being under the mental stress about how they sound or what they say, all those sorts of things.” When AAL is not helping customers find the perfect mobility solution, it supports a team of people in Edinburgh that collect trainers for children in Africa by paying for the container that they use to ship them over there. Stephen explains: “I got involved with this charity as I used to watch rugby with the guy that runs it and wanted to help him. “We are also involved with a group called 60MT Crafters who knit blankets and clothing for children in third world countries. My first wife was involved in this charity before she passed away so this is important to me personally.”

LOOKING AHEAD Stephen sees a few challenges facing the mobility sector at the moment, including supply, inflation, high living costs and global turmoil with trade deals, which he thinks will all contribute to prices in the sector going up across the board. He says: “Materials will go up in costs, and with the increase in the minimum wage and rise in national insurance employing people is getting more expensive – all that is not sustainable without incurring costs.” As for the future, AAL is looking to hold more stock, hence the move to new larger premises this year. Stephen adds: “We will be investing in marketing which will in turn generate more business. We will undoubtably have to recruit more people and this could involve an increase of up to 30 per cent in staff. We will also be looking to develop our website.” AAL’s relationship with its suppliers is important, says Stephen. “It is a partnership as without them we have no business, it is that simple. We may need information from them such as images, documentation, deals on bulk

orders, and all that doesn’t happen with someone you don’t have a relationship with. When there is a problem, they will support us and vice versa, so I am proud to say that I think of all my suppliers as friends.” Stephen is thankful for all of its suppliers for their continued support and he is looking forward to working with them in 2026. www.enableliving.com

Sitting comfortably

Specialist seating consultant, Billy Trusler, with a customer

Tri-Chair works closely with its partners to ensure its customers receive perfectly fitted specialist seating… With a new addition to its product range on the horizon, specialist seating provider Tri-Chair is looking to boost the visibility of its product offering to mobility retailers and healthcare professionals. Shaun McCluskey, Managing Director at Tri-Chair, tells us more… HOW DID TRI-CHAIR COME TO BE ESTABLISHED? SM: “Tri-Chair was established three years ago in response to a clear market need for modular, easy-to-use specialist seating designed with client comfort at its core. Since then, we have partnered with a nationwide network of dealers who work closely with us

to ensure clients receive perfectly fitted specialist seating, supported by same-day dispatch and comprehensive national aftercare. “Over the past three years, we have gathered invaluable client feedback and developed numerous case studies, including that of [former rugby league player] Rob Burrows CBE, that have shaped our continued innovation. “The Tri-Chair team brings together more than 35 years of combined experience in specialist seating, from leading sales at Kirton Healthcare to hands-on expertise in leadership for national seating retail. "Our leadership and business development teams are united by a shared passion for supporting clients

and occupational therapists, and for delivering exceptional seating solutions.” HOW IS TRI-CHAIR LOOKING TO BOOST ITS VISIBILITY TO POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS? SM: “Our sister company, Channel Healthcare, recently launched an updated website – a major project designed to better showcase how Channel Healthcare and Tri-Chair support both occupational therapists (OTs) and end users. "The site caters to OTs as well as domestic customers and aims to make the world of seating more accessible. Seating solutions can often be complex

thiis.co.uk | Supplier Spotlight | 31

and confusing, but our new Chair Selector chair-finding tool, which focuses on symptoms and conditions, helps simplify this process. “Additionally, Channel Healthcare approaches every assessment with independence, drawing from across the industry to ensure that each client receives the best product for their needs, every time.” WERE THERE ANY KEY HIGHLIGHTS FOR TRI-CHAIR FROM 2025? SM: “2025 was a year of significant investment across all three companies within the group. "Some of the highlights include the appointment of Matt Farrar as our new commercial director, the relocation and streamlining of our offices and new state-of-the-art warehouse facility in Goole, and a restructure of our internal business development team. “These investments position us to better serve our dealer community, providing hands-on, in-person support wherever it’s needed. And this is just the beginning.” CAN YOU DESCRIBE ONE OF TWO PRODUCTS TO HAVE BEEN LAUNCHED RECENTLY? SM: “In 2026, we are excited to launch a new wave of products, beginning with the Tri-Chair 7: an adjustable, SaraSteady–friendly portering riser recliner. "As one of the first of its kind on the market, the Tri-Chair 7 will be

available with same-day dispatch and delivers exceptional quality without compromise. “Launching this month, the Tri-Chair 7 is inspired by our work with Rob Burrows CBE during his motor neurone disease journey. "The Tri-Chair 7 addresses a need Rob highlighted: a portering chair that is supportive, comfortable, and adjustable as his needs evolved, while also maintaining a non-medical aesthetic suitable for his family home. Previously, we were able to provide support through the Tri-Chair 3 and a riser recliner, but this specific requirement led to the development of the brand-new Tri-Chair 7. “The Tri-Chair 7 is available with dual- or triple-motor mechanisms, a Sara Steady–friendly frame, adjustable width, and full portering capability, making it a versatile addition to our dealers’ offerings. "In support of the cause, we will also donate £50 to the MND Association for every order placed on behalf of our dealers.” HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY TRENDS WITH REGARDS WHAT CUSTOMERS ARE SEEKING? SM: “It’s clear that customer and client expectations are evolving, often seeking more value for less – something that can present challenges for a manufacturer working with trusted partners. “While we always strive to remain cost-effective and competitive,

“The Tri-Chair 7 is inspired by our work with Rob Burrows CBE” we carefully balance this with our commitment to never compromise on quality. One of the advantages of our core product range – Tri-Chair 1, Tri-Chair 2, and Tri-Chair 3 – is their full adjustability, allowing them to meet the needs of around 90 per cent of assessments in a single solution, thereby enhancing the perceived value of the product.” WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BEST-SELLING PRODUCT IN THE RANGE CURRENTLY? SM: “Our best-selling range is currently the Tri-Chair 2, which addresses around 80 per cent of conditions. The range is designed to increase in support and flexibility, from the Tri-Chair 1, which provides basic support, to the Tri-Chair 3, offering full adjustability and comprehensive support. “The Tri-Chair 2 is particularly popular with our dealers as a natural next step from the standard riser recliner set-up. "With pressure care included as standard, it serves as an excellent preventative solution while also helping to manage existing conditions and prevent them from worsening.”

“By investing heavily in our team, we ensure we can provide hands-on support” HOW IMPORTANT IS TRI-CHAIR’S RELATIONSHIP WITH ITS PARTNERS? SM: “We view our relationships with dealers as true partnerships – when they succeed, we succeed. As we move through 2026, our approach is evolving to better support their business growth by collaborating closely and complementing their strategies wherever possible. To provide tangible commercial benefits, we offer attractive quarterly rebates based on volume and even a managed service where we can conduct assessments on their behalf for a reduced discount. “We’re extremely proud of the partnerships we have and are excited about the plans for 2026, including more events, exhibitions, and talks. Kicking things off, our amazing partner Dani Base, managing director of Pearce Bros, recently showcased the Tri-Chair 2 to a group of 30 Ots – this is just the beginning!” ARE YOU SEEKING ANY MORE DEALERS FOR TRI-CHAIR PRODUCTS? SM: “We’re always seeking like-minded dealer partners for Tri-Chair, no matter where they are in the UK. We don’t view our dealers as mere distributers and aren’t interested in purely transactional relationships. “By investing heavily in our team, we ensure we can provide handson support, creating partnerships that drive healthy, organic growth for both parties in the year ahead. If this opportunity appeals to you as a dealer, we’d love to hear from you!” CAN YOU SHARE ANY RECRUITMENT NEWS AT TRI-CHAIR? SM: “2025 has been a year of investment and we’re lucky to have invested and brought in the colleagues

that we have, bolstering our already amazing core team. We appointed Matt Farrar as commercial director in June 2025, who has brought with him a strong path to take the DNA of our very special businesses, and make them bigger and more accessible to more people; clients, OTs and dealer alike. “Equally, we strengthened our business development team with the appointment of Andy Fieldwick as business development manager for the south, who brings with him a wealth of experience in pressure care, paediatrics, seating and retail.” WHAT’S NEXT FOR TRI-CHAIR HEALTHCARE IN 2026? SM: “We have a year of events planned in partnership with OTAC, and are proud to be a key sponsor over 2026. We’re also looking at a few additional events which we feel will add value to OTs, dealers and our businesses, so watch this space! “As for new products, we have something truly special up our sleeves which is based on all the learnings from our existing Tri-Chair range. We’re hoping to roll this out in April 2026, so again, stay tuned!” tri-chair.co.uk

The new Tri-Chair 7, launching this month

What is the Tri-Chair? The Tri-Chair offers a choice of three seating models each with its own design and configuration options and underpinned by a modular linked chair frame. The models are designed to be adapted to the user’s body shape to ensure they are sitting in an ergonomically-sound sitting posture with optimal body support, resulting in increased comfort, enhanced function, and reduced pain. This is achieved by each of the three models offering dynamic positioning, seat height, seat depth, seat width and arm height adjustability.

Trade thoughts What is your forecast for what 2026 might hold for the industry? THIIS asked mobility retailers for their thoughts…

“New products at more sensible prices are supporting sales” “It’s certainly going to be another challenge for the industry and country as we go forward into 2026. However, as the Government continues to hit businesses and our customer base in various ways, we are lucky enough to be in a trade where our products, in the main, are a need rather than a want. We as always, will be optimistic going forward, that trade will increase for the coming year, for ourselves along with our trade generally. “It’s good to see so many new

products coming through at some more sensible prices, certainly on the lightweight ranges, along with some brighter colours and better specification, which are certainly supporting sales. “However, it will be tough as the country falls more and more reminiscent of the 1970’s, so I hope we don’t repeat the national strikes and the three-day week, which I still remember well! “Mind you, whilst a lot of companies fell in those years a lot went from strength to strength. I was at Block & Quayle, which at the time was a fledgling company with only a handful of stores, however the firm prospered in that period as the public went away from hiring builders and doing it themselves. "We are not that far distant with the principle that the government continues to tighten up the support for our public, however the need is certainly there and increasing for our product ranges.

“From Ableworld’s situation, our financial year, started in September, 2024/2025 wasn’t good for us, mainly because of the high increase to minimum wage plus the ridiculous national insurance increases, so we ended the year on disappointing single figure sales increases. “So, we are certainly looking for a, much improved year in 2025/2026. It’s started off reasonably well with a 13 per cent like-for-like increase in the first quarter, however a lot of challenges are to come, along with, I believe, some very choppy waters for the country!” www.ableworld.co.uk

“Retailers must open up to new ways of working” “Sheer passion for the industry and belief in our team and their attitude and willingness to embrace 2026 with positivity to grow the business instils great confidence that Mobility Scotland will anticipate the challenges and continue to diversify and increase, albeit modestly, revenue and margin whilst adding customer value. “The industry in general is predicted to grow in mid-single digits in 2026 however the slight negative here is retail facing showroom sales sliding back due to price sensitivity and a general weakening in consumer confidence. There we believe lies the opportunity to further develop our hybrid sales model by increasing the product range of hire and lease equipment, as well as scaling up the existing servicing opportunities and extended warranty package sales. “In general this could be a great opportunity for businesses to demonstrate flexibility and versatility and embrace the attractive rental and

Technology is playing an increasingly influential role

service revenues which will be looking much more attractive to the consumer in 2026. Depending on their ambitions many retailers will have an awesome opportunity to grow revenue within their existing customer base. It offers an opportunity to attract new business, while safeguarding and future-proofing their business if retailers open up to new ways of working whilst tapping into the new wave of savvy consumers who are likely to be attracted to these options. “Mobility Scotland has a template in place which we are very happy to share for those who want to reach out. We have based it on robust research and evidential information from both ONS and GfK indices which both reported that retail sales and card spending

were underperforming in late-2025. This, coupled with extremely weak Black Friday sales in 2025, suggests showroom conversion rates and average order values for non-urgent mobility purchases could be under pressure in 2026. "Growth in 2026 may not be explosive but should be damn good if we play to consumer, market and economic drivers.” mobilityscotlandltd.co.uk

Billy Finnie Operations Manager at Mobility Scotland

“All is not rosy in the world of mobility retail online” “As we look ahead to 2026, I believe the UK mobility market is poised for continued growth and transformation. There is increasing demand for mobility and assistive devices driven by our ageing population and a lack of funds available in the NHS. “Market research anticipates sustained expansion across the personal mobility and assistive devices sector, with market value projections showing robust growth in key segments such as wheelchairs, scooters, and walking aids. “Technology will play an increasingly influential role in shaping the mobility landscape in 2026. We expect to see greater adoption of smart and connected mobility aids, including AI-enhanced

38 | Trade Thoughts | thiis.co.uk

devices, sensors for safety and fall prevention, and products designed with improved ergonomics and user customisation. “However, all is not rosy, particularly in the world of mobility retail online. Amazon’s continued growth in this sector and the influx of many Chinese companies importing their goods directly into Amazon warehouses and using fulfilment by Amazon to ship to customers is an ever-increasing threat. Their prices are low and many UK sellers struggle to compete with standard websites, finding it difficult to stand up to the might and dominance of Amazon. "Furthermore Google’s introduction of AI within results is pushing websites further and further down the page rankings.

“We, at Ability Superstore, will continue our focus on introducing new product ranges and adding to our library of helpful advice and guides, ideal for those researching products they require for themselves or a loved one. By continuing to prioritise customer service, competitive pricing, and a wide product range, Ability Superstore is forecast to strengthen its market presence in 2026 and beyond.” www.abilitysuperstore.com

Customised seating As an individual’s seating needs become more complex, the greater the need for that individual’s seating to be customised to meet their needs. What do new technologies such as 3D printing offer? We are all individual, but the ‘80:20 rule’ suggests that 80 per cent of us will be suited by off-the-shelf equipment. However, there is a smaller percentage of individuals where their comfort, safety, health, positioning, and optimised functionality needs require adaptive seating customised to meet these more complex ends. How can we go about this best, and what are the options available to us from newer technologies? Early and appropriate intervention should prevent complex skeletal deformities occurring, but in their absence gravity has exerted its effects on the shape of the body, and in many cases it’s too late to correct these deformities either through equipment or surgery. So how best to accommodate them? What is available ‘off the shelf’ and what needs to be bespoke? MODULAR SYSTEMS At the simplest level there are off-theshelf cushion solutions, such as the Varilite ProForm, where sections of the internal structures and foams can be cut away to accommodate different leg lengths, sensitive tissue areas, etc, or pieces of foam added to accommodate

other anatomical discrepancies, all hidden beneath a stretch cover (Figure 1). At the next level, there are seat cushion and back support offerings in the marketplace, such as some Jay, Spex, and other manufacturers’ offerings, which have off-the-shelf removable or adjustable components which can be rearranged between a solid backing and a flexible cover, to accommodate the individual’s body shape or tissue integrity needs. These components can also be adjusted over time as the individual’s needs change.

Moulded seating is needed by people with more complex physical disabilities, chronic conditions, or asymmetrical body shapes which require significant postural support, pressure relief, and comfort that standard seating systems and products cannot provide. This includes those individuals with conditions like cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, or severe posture issues, with needs to help prevent pressure injuries, improve respiration, or manage spasms. It’s for anyone who spends long hours seated and who needs tailored support for health, function, and independence, often involving detailed clinical assessment to create a custom fit. A relatively easy and fast solution, providing a close match to the body’s shape can be achieved with the process of Foam-In-Place (FIP). FIP is a custom moulding process where liquid foam chemicals are mixed and poured into a bag or mould around a person’s body (often while they are in their wheelchair), creating an instant, perfectly contoured seat or back support for superior pressure relief, posture control, and comfort (Figure 2). A more adjustable system uses polyurethane bags filled with small

foam beads (Figure 3). The bag is formed around the individual, and then the air removed to maintain the impression of the person’s body. This system has the advantage that it can have the air let back in, and the shape adjusted as the person’s needs change. More complex moulded seating is the next level, where an external orthosis in the form of a shell is created. A custom mould (impression) of the person’s body is taken using materials like FIP or beanbags, as described above, but these are used to provide the 3D shape from which a long-term mould can be produced.

Figure 3. A Jonvac polystyrene bead filled mouldable back support

Alternatively a 3D scan of the body can be used. This allows creation of a precise, unique seat shell that distributes pressure evenly, supports natural curves, and offers specific support where needed, improving overall function and comfort. The shells have been created from fibreglass, and more recently from polyethylene skins. These were originally known as Derby moulds, having been developed at the Orthotics and Disability Research Centre in Derby and made available commercially by Specialised Orthotic Services, now part of Drive Medical (Figure 4). These

structures were found to be too rigid for many clients, and provided little scope for movement or growth. Carved foam has been a popular alternative where a 3D scan of the body provides the data from which a block of foam can be carved to fit the individual (Figure 5). NEW MATERIALS The hard shell and the carved foam solutions have limitations in that they are both bulky and relatively heavy. They are also difficult to clean or disinfect. The advent of 3D spun elastomer materials has opened up a whole new choice of seating materials. They are lightweight and they are eminently breathable, providing enhanced microclimate management. They also present better hygiene in that they do not absorb unwanted materials – rather, they are washable and can be disinfected at high temperatures. They are durable. They can provide beneficial energy return or energy dampening. On the sustainability front, they have limited amounts of waste materials from the manufacturing process. Off the shelf you can get these benefits from spun elastomer cushions such as the

IN CONCLUSION

Figure 6. The NEST spun elastomer cushion

Nest (Figure 6): the plastic used in these cushions can be chopped up and recycled, highlighting additional sustainability benefits. The same elastomers can also be applied to custom-fitted cushions and seating. A scan of a body shape fed into a 3D printer can provide, a few hours later, a bespoke cushion (Figure 7) printed out for an individual to provide all the benefits outlined above. The beauty of this system is that the programmer can select different densities and properties of the elastomer in different areas of the product, to accommodate specific requirements such as pressure-injury sensitive areas such as near bony prominences. These products are currently relatively expensive to acquire, and also still take quite some time to print, but as the costs of printers are falling quickly, and speeds are improving, this approach is likely to displace carved foam over time.

client’s needs may have changed or will change, and so the products have a limited life until they need to be replaced. To meet these challenges, many years ago the Matrix seating system, followed by the Lynx system were developed. These principles have evolved into the FreeForm seating system as the most recent manifestation (Figure 8). These systems have been based on a modular adjustable network of linked connected components, each of which can be adjusted to fit the threedimensional shape of the individual, and in most cases the complete system can be delivered on the day. The open lattice provides for good breathability and therefore microclimate management. On the sustainability front, rather than being discarded when outgrown, the system can be adjusted over time to meet the client’s changing needs, and so can be updated and upgraded month by month, and year by year, as needed.

Seating systems can be customised for individual specialist needs by a range of methods depending on the complexity of the needs. These adaptations can be achieved through minor adjustments to the inside materials of a cushion or the arrangement of discrete internal pads at the simpler level. As requirements become more complex one-off customised moulded supports may provide the answer: current computer modelling and 3D printing can provide bespoke solutions which are lighter in weight, and provide better microclimate conditions than techniques and materials of old. Adjustable individual shell components can also provide a precise fit, with the benefit that the adjustments can be carried on over time as the person’s needs change.

ADJUSTABLE CUSTOMISATION While providing a good fit to the body shape at the time of assessment, these moulded/printed approaches have the disadvantage that the product takes time to produce, and the client has to wait for delivery. With time, the

A critical element of any seating system will be the cover placed onto the system. With the more complex shapes, a good degree of stretch will be needed in the materials to avoid bridging or hammocking. The stretchiness can also offer benefits of shear stress reduction. With the breathability of the elastomer products or of the FreeForm, it’s important that the cover will not negate these skin microclimate benefits. To this end, Symmetric Designs uses a Supracor Stimulite open honeycomb filling which permits enhanced air flow through the cover.
