Riding high on performance

Welcome!

Maintaining a high-quality, personalised service in an increasingly competitive market can be a challenge for many mobility retailers, but Bedfordshire-based Comfort Homecare has managed to navigate this well. Turn to page 23 to find out how a focus on care and community has served this growing mobility retailer well over the years, and kept its customers coming back.

Retailers and suppliers also need to stay ahead of the game by supplying innovative products of course. Dr Barend ter Haar of BES Healthcare discusses this theme in more detail on page 34.

Also hot on the innovation trail is AAT GB, which has been supplying products for individuals with diverse mobility needs for over 20 years – its popular Sella stairclimber offers a budget-friendly alternative to stairlifts. Find out more about AAT GB's story on page 29.

This month’s issue draws attention to daily living aids, which cover a wide range of products from clothing aids to handy reachers, often helping to enhance, or make safer, a user’s everyday routine. Check out our Retailers’ Choice (p10) and Buyers’ Guide features (p42) to discover the latest daily living aids on the market.

Keeping to the same theme, THIIS chats to Mitch Preedy, Commercial Manager at The Helping Hand Company, which specialises in an array of pressure care products and daily living aids, to discuss its exciting new rebrand.

It's got the power!

Sunrise Medical has unveiled an ultra-lightweight folding powerchair with new comfort options which are designed to provide a smootherthan-ever riding experience..

The Quickie Q50 R Carbon Comfort builds on the success of the previous model which was introduced in 2023.

The updated model retains its predecessor’s low 14.5kg weight, while incorporating a thick pressure-relieving comfort cushion.

In addition to the new comfortenhancing innovations, the Q50 R

Carbon Comfort also comes with a range of functionalities for extra convenience.

Its handy attendant control mount allows family members and carers to control the chair, making it ideal to take on long journeys and to help manage fatigue.

The joystick can be seamlessly swapped between user control and attendant control without the need for additional modules, allowing users to switch in seconds. A sleek new battery travel bag is also available.

A round-up of the key trade stories for business leaders to digest

Making the connection

Curtiss-Wright has added a new range of connected controllers to its Powerchair Manager ecosystem, the firm’s end-to-end digital solution for powerchairs.

The R-net PM2-C is designed to deliver advanced data-logging, powerful connectivity, and customisation. Its enhanced data-logging capabilities includes six independent logs that record powerchairspecific events, including battery charge and discharge cycles, configuration changes, and error occurrences, with each event date and timestamped using the integrated real-time clock, providing a detailed record for analysis and warranty support.

With built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, the R-net PM2-C allows powerchair data to be sent securely to the cloud or Curtiss-Wright’s My Powerchair app, a connectivity that supports remote diagnostics, user notifications, and easy access to service information.

High on style

Stairlift manufacturer Stannah says that its latest stairlift model challenges what a stairlift can be. The new 158 model combines design excellence with advanced engineering, while offering comfort, style, safety and movement.

A limited-edition early production run of just 158 units is available of the stairlift which features a smart black rail and carriage paired with a sculpted chair.

Finished with two-tone upholstery in warm, neutral tones, the 158 stairlift has been designed from the outset to be a statement piece that enhances the home, according to Stannah.

The stairlift is packed with smart features and powered functions as well as easyto-use controls. It has a forward-facing seat which can be folded to create a neat profile, while a deep seat with inclined backrest enhances user comfort. The stairlift also features gentle audio responses to provide reassuring feedback for the user.

The chair introduces the ability to programme the powered fold, swivel and footrest on installation to suit the user’s needs.

Smirthwaite bolsters its sales team

Smirthwaite, a designer and manufacturer of bespoke equipment for children and young adults with additional needs, has announced the appointment of Jane Earl who will be taking on the role of Technical Product Advisor, Midlands. Jane has had a long career as a product specialist with various companies in the industry, including Smirthwaite itself from 2007 to 2017. Her most recent role was Product Specialist at Schuchmann LLP.

WHIZZ KIDZ HALTS NEW PATIENT REFERRALS

For the first time in its 35-year history, Whizz Kidz, the UK charity which provides customised mobility equipment for children and young people, has been forced to stop taking new patients due to a surge in demand. It says that escalating costs and squeezed NHS budgets are creating a “huge demand” for its service, leading to long delays. It has launched the Childhood Can’t Wait appeal (www. whizz-kidz.org.uk/childhood-cantwait/), to raise £750,000 to reopen the waitlist and cut waiting times.

UK DISTRIBUTOR FOR BLIND SPOT SENSORS

Braze Mobility, a Canadian firm which provides assistive technology for wheelchairs, has announced its new distribution partnership with Beyond Mobility, a South West England-based mobility solutions provider.

Braze Blind Spot Sensors can be added to any manual or powered wheelchair, transforming it into a ‘smart’ mobility device that detects obstacles and provides real-time feedback through lights, sounds, and vibrations, empowering users with increased spatial awareness.

in brief...

Jenx has confirmed that following a full consultation process it will proceed with the closure of its manufacturing operations.

This decision comes after a sustained period of financial pressure on manufacturing, reflecting broader challenges across the UK sector. Despite extensive efforts to identify alternatives, no viable long-term solution was found to maintain in-house production.

The closure will sadly result in the redundancy of 47 roles. Jenx is working closely with all affected employees to ensure they are well supported through this significant transition.

SUNRISE MEDICAL COURSES

Assistive mobility solutions provider Sunrise Medical is offering a new series of courses to support retail providers and other healthcare professionals in assessing, prescribing and fitting mobility and seating technology for their clients.

Education in Motion (EIM)

STEPS courses are a series of free clinical and technical courses which focus on wheelchair maintenance, programming and mechanical topics. The courses, which are available to view at www. sunrisemedical.co.uk/steps-training, are run by occupational therapists

Freedom on three wheels

European tricycle manufacturer Jorvik Tricycles has unveiled a three-in-one tricycle which aims to bridge the gap in the market between a standard tricycle and mobility scooter.

Jorvik’s new tricycle provides a cross between a recumbent tricycle, electric bike and a mobility scooter, combining power with stability and support. Boasting 16-inch tyres, two air springs, and a rear drive Bafang motor, Jorvik Freedom is a hybrid model for both onand off-road cycling.

With more than a third of Brits reported to feel a social stigma attached to mobility scooters Jorvik Freedom hopes that its model will offer an alternative option for users with limited mobility. Available in black and green, the tricycle comes with a 48-volt battery.

Fold up and go

Mobility equipment manufacturer Drive

DeVilbiss Healthcare has launched the AeroCarbon Scooter, a carbon fibre folding mobility scooter. Engineered for effortless modern lifestyles, the scooter combines a high-end design with advanced functionality. The firm states that this latest addition is its lightest mobility scooter yet with a weight of 13kg. Standout features include a compact folding mechanism, rear suspension, integrated LED lighting, and an intuitive LCD display. The LCD display features self-diagnostics for trouble shooting as well as battery capacity, range, speed and NFC keyless start up.

Compact, with a folding size of 69x52x38cm, the AeroCarbon is air travel safe and comes with a lightweight lithium-ion battery.

Easing the pressure

Wheelchair manufacturer Meyra UK has announced the launch of Netti Precision, a seating solution designed to elevate skin protection, postural support, and user comfort for wheelchair users. Netti Precision is built on ‘ergomise technology’, a clinically driven innovation that combines digital modelling and multi-hardness materials to deliver tailored support and pressure relief.

Unlike traditional 3D-printed cushions, it is engineered to deliver measurable outcomes in immersion, stability, and skin integrity.

The range includes two models. The Netti Precision 1 is designed for users at risk of pressure injuries and offers pressure distribution and pelvic support, while the Netti Precision 2 is tailored for users with sensitive skin or existing skin damage.

THE RETAILERS’

CHOICE

Daily living aids

Wondering which daily living aids are grabbing mobility companies’ attention?

This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight a product that stands out for them…

Derby Tap Turner from Langham

“We’re always on the lookout for simple, affordable products that can make a real difference in daily living. For October, we’re highlighting the Derby Tap Turner – a long-standing favourite that continues to prove its value for customers who struggle with grip and dexterity.

“The Derby Tap Turner is designed to slot over existing crosshead and crystal style taps, instantly providing extra leverage and grip. This makes it particularly useful for customers living with arthritis, limited hand strength, or joint pain, who may otherwise find standard taps difficult to use.

“One of the key reasons we recommend the Derby Tap Turner is its ease of use and practicality. With no installation required, it can be fitted in seconds and removed just as quickly – making it a cost-effective alternative to replacing taps altogether. The red and blue colour coding also helps users easily distinguish between hot and cold taps, reducing confusion and improving safety.

“In our stores, we find customers appreciate solutions like this that offer independence without a big financial outlay. It’s a great example of how small, well-designed products can have a significant impact on day-to-day living.”

Buckingham Bra Angel Dressing Aid from Buckingham Healthcare

“The Bra Angel combines simplicity with innovation. It is versatile and designed to fit most bra types and easily adjusts to a wide variety of sizes. The telescopic action allows it to be compacted, making it easy to carry. It is also latex free for anyone with sensitive skin.

“This aid promotes independence among less mobile users and is a very useful aid for women. For women with limited mobility – whether due to arthritis, stroke, injury, or surgery –putting on a bra can be a frustrating and often impossible task without assistance. The difficulty of bringing both ends of a bra together, especially with reduced strength or dexterity in one arm, can make a daily routine feel like a major hurdle.

“Designed by occupational therapist Chris Clarke, the Buckingham Bra Angel Dressing Aid offers an elegant and empowering solution. This clever device allows women to put on a bra using just one hand – no need for help, no loss of independence.

“The Bra Angel works by holding one end of the bra in place, giving the user the freedom to bring the other end around the body and fasten it securely. A soft chin pad helps keeps the Bra Angel comfortably in position, while still allowing a clear view of the fastenings.”

Extended

StairSteady from StairSteady Products

“Those customers that are a little unsteady on their feet and perhaps use a walking stick, a walking frame or a rollator on level ground would benefit from the use of a StairSteady on the stairs.

“It is installed just like a traditional handrail with substantial fixings and carries a support rail across the stairs which glides easily as you push it but

locks solid when you bear weight against it. The rail is covered with a wipeable non-slip cover and folds flat against the wall at either end of the stairs. It is a popular solution for those that still see the benefit in taking a small amount of exercise and are not yet ready to give in to a fully powered stairlift. Added to that, as a non-powered solution it has no regular

Bigfoot Half Step from Gordon Ellis

“One of our most popular products, the Bigfoot Half Step from Gordon Ellis, has earned its place as a best-seller thanks to its simplicity, reliability, and the real difference it makes in everyday life.

“Designed to reduce the height of an entrance step, it creates a stable “halfway” platform between the door threshold and the ground. For many people, especially those with limited mobility, arthritis, or balance concerns, that single high step in or out of the home can feel like a barrier. The Bigfoot Half Step turns that tricky manoeuvre into a safe, manageable movement. The platform itself is generously sized, with a non-slip surface that provides security even in wet conditions.

“Its sturdy design ensures

durability and peace of mind, whether used at the front door, back door, or even at a patio entrance. Where additional support is required, the step is available with one or two handles which are easily fitted to the step. These provide a reliable handhold, giving users extra stability and confidence as the user steps in and out of their home.

“What makes the Bigfoot Half Step so appealing is how straightforward it is – no complicated installation, no structural changes, just a practical solution that can be placed exactly where it is needed. For family members and carers, it offers reassurance that loved ones are safer at home.

“For users, it restores independence and helps reduce

maintenance requirement and is a less expensive option to purchase.”

the risk of falls. It is this winning combination of safety, simplicity, and effectiveness that makes it one of our topselling products year after year.”

Shopping Trolley

from Able2

“When I think of a shopping trolley, I think of the old fashioned type my gran used back in the day with two wheels. However, they have come a long way since the 80’s and now sport a comfortable seat like this shopping trolley from Able2.

“This trolley is the perfect development from the traditional pullalong shopping trolley we all remember. By changing the mode of action from pull to push, it offers better control and stability. The padded handle gives the user all-day comfort when pushing for long periods of time. The brake handle is a single mechanism that runs in line with the handle. It enables the user to apply the brakes to the rear wheels with one hand or both hands from anywhere on the handle.

“The double front wheels can be set as forward facing, or released to turn through 180 or 360 degrees. This allows complete control over the manoeuvrability of the cart. The brakes on the rear wheels can also be locked in place to allow the user to use the padded bag lid and back strap as a comfortable seat. This is an important feature on the trolley as our customers want something that is practical but can also be used for a rest if need be.

“It is easy to fold and lock in place and will stand independently. It is however, not designed to be used as a walking aid. It has a maximum user weight of 13 stone. It comes in either black or tartan. We prefer the black model at Thistle Help but the most popular with our customers is the tartan model.”

Let’s Go

Indoor Rollator from Able2

“The Let’s Go Indoor Rollator is a light, flexible and beautifully designed mobility aid, perfect for use in the home, hospital, or care home. Its slim frame makes it easy to manoeuvre in narrow spaces such as toilets and bathrooms, while its smooth-running wheels provide comfortable movement over carpets and household thresholds.

“It is designed with practicality and ease of use in mind. The ergonomically shaped handle can be adjusted to suit the user’s height, providing comfort and control. The hand-operated brakes are simple to apply and can also be used as parking brakes for added safety. As the brakes are linked, they can be controlled with just one hand, offering reassurance and convenience for those with limited strength or dexterity.

“The Let’s Go Indoor Rollator includes a removable clip-on tray and a useful carry bag, making it ideal for transporting drinks, plates, or other lightweight items between rooms. These thoughtful features allow users to remain independent and confident in their daily routines.

“When not in use, the rollator can be folded neatly away or transported easily in a car. Its aluminium frame is complemented by a stylish beech finish on the rear legs, giving it a modern and attractive appearance that blends seamlessly into any environment.

“Highly recommended by Ability Plus, the Let’s Go Indoor Rollator combines safety, convenience, and Scandinavianinspired design, offering a dependable solution for those seeking support and independence indoors.”

Trade Talk

THIIS talks to Mitch Preedy, Commercial Manager at The Helping Hand Company, to find out the latest on its innovative range of pressure care products and daily living aids…

CAN YOU DESCRIBE ONE OR TWO OF THE NEWEST ADDITIONS TO THE HELPING HAND RANGE?

“The newest addition to our ADL (activities of daily living) range is the Ezy-Fit Raised Toilet Seat. To have a seat that now fits a square toilet as well as a standard one at a competitive price is making a great stride in this market.

“When developing this we also identified that all CES (community equipment services) contracts and retail have a range of 2”,4” or 6” to

supply depending on the user’s range of mobility, which is why our innovative design of three heights in one modular item is already popular – this item covers them all.”

SUNRISE MEDICAL ACQUIRED HELPING HAND COMPANY IN 2022 – WHAT HAVE BEEN THE MAIN BENEFITS OF THIS ACQUISITION IN TERMS OF HOW YOUR FIRM OPERATES?

“We are so much more efficient with our resources and support,

“To have a wider, stronger team and colleagues who are experts in their fields has been such a positive change”

commercially as well as in the back office, with our key teams in R&D, customer service, marketing, finance, production, etc. working together, which I am sure the market has noticed.

“To have a wider, stronger team and colleagues who are experts in their fields compared to when we were a smaller team doing lots of roles has been such a positive change. It has enabled my team, and myself, to be so much more customer focused across Helping Hand and Symmetrikit.”

DOES HELPING HAND COMPANY CONTINUE TO SHOWCASE ITS PRODUCTS ON THE QVC SHOPPING CHANNEL?

“We haven’t done anything for a while as we operate this through a third party

The SymmetriSeat 50 postural support chair features a patented ‘sleep back’ design and comes with a range of options

who supports mobility aids on QVC. The products showcased on QVC certainly saw an increase in sales, not just that day but continued over the following 4-6 weeks.”

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE MAIN CHALLENGE AFFECTING THE INDEPENDENT LIVING AIDS SECTOR AT THE MOMENT, PARTICULARLY GIVEN THE RECENT CLOSURE OF COMMUNITY EQUIPMENT SUPPLIER NRS HEALTHCARE?

“As you have mentioned, the impact from the NRS situation is difficult in some areas for sourcing products and running existing contracts, but it seems other parties and local authorities have acted quickly in supporting community equipment.

“Community equipment, however, will still be impacting ADL provision as they supply less smaller aids, and the responsibility is on the public to support themselves for those items. That is why we also run our online business through HelpingHand.co.uk and Amazon, which is proving a key part of our business and growth with the added resource of our new ecommerce manager.

“Our rebrand is on the way. It will be much cleaner and fresher”

“We are very lucky being a UK manufacturer for our ADL, pressure care and postural care (Symmetrikit) items alongside seamless sourcing for our Coopers range that we are confident in our stock levels, product development and quick turnaround for our customers in retail or in the community.”

IN TERMS OF INNOVATING PRODUCTS IN THE FUTURE, WHAT IS THE HELPING HAND COMPANY’S FOCUS AT THE MOMENT?

“Across the company we are developing in all areas. In terms of postural care the Acheeva learning station will see some significant upgrades. SymmetriSleep has some exciting improvements and additions in the pipeline as well as further developments to our seating range since the launch of the SymmetriSeat50 adaptive chair earlier this year.

“In the pressure care division, our immediate issue air range, EquaZone, will be expanding with at least two new additions. The other move is the supply of our wheelchair cushions, which will be moving under the Sunrise Medical NHS Wheelchair Team. This makes us easier to work with again by giving the wheelchair service a key contact point for field and customer support.

“In our Coopers and ADL divisions we will be introducing a wider range of patient aids to support the current requirement across retail and community equipment services

contracts as we have identified current shortfalls.”

WHAT IS COMING NEXT FOR THE HELPING HAND COMPANY OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS?

“You will see that our rebrand is on the way. It will be much cleaner and fresher and show that we at Helping Hand are one team offering pressure care, ADL and postural care.

“A lot of people don’t know that Symmetrikit has always been part of The Helping Hand Company – but it has been for 30 years.

“Our key message to customers is that nothing changes – they will access the same quality products and service but under our new complete brand of Helping Hand.

“We are busy planning for The OT Show (26-27 November 2025 at Birmingham’s NEC) across all of our Helping Hand areas to ensure we have a clear message across ADL, pressure care and postural care. We have confirmed what seminars we will be delivering and the key products for the stand – which we are going even bigger with this year.

“In November it is also ‘Stop the Pressure’, a national awareness campaign from 17-21 November focused on pressure ulcer prevention, for which we support a large number of district nursing and Society of Tissue Viability Days, specifically pressure care. The logistics around that are in full swing.”

Community trail-blazer

A

television advertising campaign has been helping put Bedfordshire-based Comfort Homecare on the map in terms of the support it offers customers with mobility needs…

Established as a small independent business in 2007, Comfort Homecare has flourished into a popular independent mobility superstore in the market town of Shefford in Bedfordshire.

Bob Martindale, Sales Manager for Comfort Homecare, says that the family-run business has just grown “year on year” in both size and staff since then. It has also seen a big increase in customers each year as well, which Bob says is thanks to its commitment to quality service and trusted products.

In store, customers can view a range of over 30 in-stock mobility scooters which are available to test drive. There is also an extensive range of rise & recline chairs in various sizes and styles to sample, as well as wheelchairs, daily living aids, and bathroom adaptations. Customers are encouraged to try out

the products in a relaxed environment with expert guidance on hand.

As well as offering an extensive range of products to help its customers with mobility needs, the store boasts an onsite workshop, offering servicing and repairs of mobility scooters and powered mobility aids.

CLOSE-KNIT TEAM

Bob has been working at Comfort Homecare since November 2015. “I was drawn to the sector after seeing first-hand how much of a difference the right equipment can make to someone’s independence and quality

“We really take the time to understand each customer’s needs”

of life,” he says. “That’s what continues to drive me today. “

Comfort Homecare has a close-knit and passionate team, says Bob, with every team member playing a vital role.

These include the managing director Steve Mundy who oversees the day-to-day running of the business.

Other family members include Jo Roberts-Mundy, who is a director, Grace Roberts-Mundy, who manages the store’s social media and marketing campaigns, and Kate Roberts-Mundy, who works in sales and administration.

Gary Chamberlain, who is fully qualified and experienced in prescriptive equipment, is the store’s senior engineer, and he covers all mobile servicing and repairs, both in store and through home visits. “This is a key part of our aftercare service and something our customers really value,” says Bob.

Lisa Cunningham is one of the store’s valued salespeople, says Bob. “The sales team are face-to-face with our customers and enjoy providing a personal approach to finding the right solution for everyone.”

Chris Parker is the workshop manager, responsible for bookings, the workshop team and organising deliveries and collections.

Bob says that offering an extra special personal service has been key to Comfort Homecare’s success so far.

He says: “We really take the time to understand each customer’s needs. This, combined with honest advice, a wide range of quality products, and ongoing support, has built a strong reputation and loyal customer base for us.“

The store generally serves customers within a 40-mile radius but sometimes the store will travel a lot further. It helps that the store is easily accessible with parking spaces available outside the showroom.

There is plenty of footfall into the store with many customers coming in via word of mouth such as through the recommendation of a family member.

Comfort Homecare

“Smaller, familyrun businesses prioritise care and community over volume”
The Nitron folding powerchair
The store has a wide range of mobility scooters for customers to test-drive

promotes itself in the local community too, through events and partnerships. The store recently boosted its profile by featuring in a local ITV advertising campaign. “This gave us fantastic exposure and helped raise awareness of the support available for those with mobility needs,” enthuses Bob.

BESTSELLING PRODUCTS

Mobility scooters and rise-&-recline chairs are both in high demand at the moment, says Bob. Specifically, the Motion Healthcare range of products is popular, says Bob, due to their extended five-year warranty. “These products offer independence and comfort, and customers really appreciate being able to try them out before buying,” says Bob.

Comfort Homecare recently started stocking the Nitron, a lightweight folding powerchair from Motion Healthcare, that has been a hit with customers. “It’s compact, easy to transport, and ideal for those wanting more freedom without the bulk of a traditional chair,” says Bob.

Strong supplier relationships are essential in the running of a successful business. “We look for reliability, fair pricing, and excellent aftersales support. If we can trust the supplier, our customers can trust us.”

As with most mobility retailers, Comfort Homecare’s website is a “key touchpoint” in the customer journey.

The store recognises how websites are increasingly important for helping people with researching their options before coming into store.

Offering a face-to-face service with customers is the store’s priority though. “While e-commerce has its place, we believe that mobility products are best experienced in person,” he says. “Customers need to be properly assessed, try the equipment for themselves, and receive tailored advice – something that can’t be replicated online.”

ENTERING A NEW ERA

Looking ahead to 2026, Bob says Comfort Homecare is committed to expanding its product range, as well as increasing its online presence, and improving accessibility in-store. It is also planning to run more community outreach initiatives.

One major challenge for the retailer is keeping products affordable while maintaining quality. “There’s also growing demand for innovation, which puts pressure on suppliers and retailers to adapt quickly.”

Another ongoing challenge is maintaining high-quality, personalised service in an increasingly competitive market, he comments. “We believe it’s important to support smaller, familyrun businesses that prioritise care and community over volume. Large corporate chains can’t always offer

the same level of tailored advice and aftercare that independent retailers provide.”

The store is entering an “exciting new era” with the launch of its fully equipped mobile servicing van, allowing it to offer on-site repairs and support with even greater convenience for its customers.

Bob adds: “We’re also looking to place a strong focus on prescriptive seating, wheelchairs, and powerchairs to better meet complex mobility needs." Alongside this, Comfort Homecare is investing in more TV and leaflet drop advertising to further raise awareness and reach more people in the community.

With a focus on introducing products to the sector that help disabled people in their daily life, AAT GB’s

mission has always been to bring something different to the table…

AAT GB has been supplying products designed to empower individuals with diverse mobility needs for over 20 years.

The firm's range of products include mobility wheelchairs, stairclimbers, and tailored solutions for people with conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, motor neurone disease, and others, helping to enhance independence, comfort, and safety whether at home, school, or out and about.

THIIS chats to Peter Wingrave, Director and co-founder of AAT GB, about the firm’s bestselling products and its plans for the future…

CAN YOU PROVIDE SOME BACKGROUND ABOUT AAT GB, AS WELL AS WHO ESTABLISHED THE FIRM?

“AAT stands for Alber Antriebstechnik. Alber was the family name of the founder, while ‘antriebstechnik’ means drive technology in German.

“AAT GB originally only distributed AAT GmbH products, hence why that name was chosen, being initially the UK sales division, albeit independently owned and operated. I founded AAT GB some 20 years ago.

“I saw the Sella stairclimber in use in Germany and realised it had potential in the UK. At the time in the UK the only real technological solution for anyone with impaired mobility to get up and down stairs was a stairlift:

“There are numerous scenarios where a stairlift is not suitable”

hence why stairlifts are the generic solution for inter-stairway access. Even through-floor lifts have really only come to the fore as an alternative in the last decade or so.

“Stairlifts require the user to have a high degree of control over their body but all of us in the disability sector know that is not always – even often –the case. There are numerous scenarios where a stairlift is not suitable, be it the design of the stairway or the particular issues affecting the passenger etc. Most UK homes have stairs, so the market opportunity I saw was huge –and I have not been disappointed!”

CAN YOU DESCRIBE A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE SELLA STAIRCLIMBER WAS DEVELOPED?

“The Sella was primarily developed in Germany, using its renowned engineering expertise. The concept was established there. We felt that the UK could also benefit. Europe has very

The S-Max Powered Stairclimber
“Almost every local authority has at least one Sella”

different approaches to supporting its disabled population, and funding that support. The biggest challenge wasn’t so much with the product but explaining the niceties of the UK social care system with its equipment provision structure.”

CAN YOU DESCRIBE HOW THE STAIRCLIMBER ACTUALLY WORKS?

“A stairclimber is a portable, batterypowered device that carries someone who can’t navigate stairs on their own up and down the stairs. The battery powers two ‘feet’ which extend or retract depending on the direction of travel from one stair riser to the next. It also features wheels to move the device to the correct point on the riser and provide smooth movement at the end of the stairway.

“It removes the potential danger of a transfer at the top of the stairs – often a risk with a stairlift. The operator controls the speed of movement and can pause the process at any stage. Our S-Max and Sella stairclimbers feature a patented auto braking mechanism which holds the unit on the lip of each riser, allowing the operator time to adjust their position in line with the stairclimber as it traverses the stairway.

“A stairclimber further differs from a stairlift in that it is not attached to the structure in any way, and can continue on from the staircase – into other rooms, up additional flights in a townhouse or block of flats, or outside!

An

The Sella unit features an integral seat. The S-Max variant does not but attaches to a wheelchair via special brackets.”

WHAT

DO YOU THINK HAS BEEN

KEY TO AAT GB’S SUCCESS SO FAR?

“AAT’s success has been its ability to bring unique products to the market. ‘Unique’ may be a strong word, but there was nothing like the stairclimber when we first introduced it, and similarly with the vacuum posture cushions. Our focus is to always bring to the sector products that help disabled people in their daily life, that bring something different to the table.”

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE VACUUM POSTURE CUSHIONS – HOW DO THESE WORK?

“Stabilo vacuum posture cushions are in essence bean-filled cushions of diverse shapes and sizes. The vacuum technology removes the air between the “beans” thereby fixing and stabilising the shape. It means that the cushions – from our mattresssized Grande and chair-shaped Chilli Bean through to a small arm pad – can be perfectly contoured to alleviate pressure and support as needed without the regular re-adjustment inherent with conventional cushions.

“It’s easy to form even complex shapes such as pommels, or address asymmetry. And it’s easy to adjust: just let a little air back into the cushion via the valve, reshape, and use the pump to extract the air and fix the shape again. They were originally developed in Poland by a family who

struggled to keep their disabled son sat comfortably. We all know the issues with conventional cushions – having to re-plump, reshape. The result was Stabilo.

“With Chilli Bean, the alternative is usually a fixed mould for a bean chair: as the child grows and changes shape a new mould would have to be cast, involving time in re-assessment and cost. Because the carer can adjust the vacuum posture cushion themselves, that cost and delay is avoided, and the child’s comfort assured 24/7.

“Aqua Liberty, our supported bathing system, we developed here in the UK, basing it around a Stabilo product and devising a mechanism for fixing it within the bath to securely support the bather whilst still being easy to remove for other members of the household. Stabilo has now taken it and added Aqua Liberty to the product range.”

WHAT STANDS OUT FOR YOU AS A HIGHLIGHT AT AAT GB?

“Our re-issue capability is a standout opportunity, for us and for occupational therapists (OTs). Our market penetration today is such that almost every local authority has at least one Sella. With the pressure on social care and adaptation budgets, it means OTs can make best use of resources by reallocating our kit to someone else when the previous recipient no longer needs it and managing the risk.”

HOW ARE YOUR PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED?

“Our product range is extensive, with some elements manufactured in the UK and some in Europe.”

WHAT IS THE BEST-SELLING PRODUCT FOR AAT GB?

“The Sella stairclimbing wheelchair is our top seller, and the biggest selling stairclimber for disabled people in the UK. Its success is due to its suitability for almost every staircase design, ease of use, our speed of response and our personal touch. We personally visit every recipient, assess them, their caregiver and environment to ensure everything is correct and safe, and then set up the stairclimber for each user and train their carer in its safe use.”

CAN YOU DESCRIBE ONE OR TWO OF THE NEWEST PRODUCTS IN THE AAT GB RANGE?

“Our newest product is our bespoke Universal Seating System. Developed for the Sella, it means one core accessory can evolve with the user to ensure their constant and correct safety and support even as their disability progresses.”

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT HOW YOUR PRODUCTS ARE DISTRIBUTED IN THE UK?

“We have a few select distributors but specialise in selling direct to the customer – usually the local authority or NHS trust.

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS EXPORTED TO OTHER COUNTRIES?

“AAT and Stabilo products are exported worldwide by the parent companies as far afield as Australia. But there is

potential to gain greater penetration in Europe and AAT GB is spear-heading the drive. AAT GB is always on the look-out for potential partners.”

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE MAIN CHALLENGE IN THE SOCIAL SECTOR AT THE MOMENT?

“Budget constraints among the sector are the biggest challenge. It’s why we have seen such a big uptake of our re-issue offering. Our reissue package means OTs can ensure someone can access all levels of their home, safely, for less than £1,500.”

HOW DO YOU SEE THE BUSINESS DEVELOPING IN THE FUTURE?

“The stairclimber market will only continue to grow, with our housing stock and increasingly ageing population. But we are always watching for new opportunities that enable people to remain in their homes, and

prevent hospital admissions.

“There are already one or two products we are particularly appraising with a view to introducing them in the coming months, that are associated with our core market but take it beyond, so watch this space!”

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT 12 MONTHS FOR THE BUSINESS?

“We are trialling OTAC (Occupational Therapy Adaptations Conference) and will be at The OT Show (taking place from 26-27 November at the NEC in Birmingham), showcasing the Sella and our other key innovations – the vacuum posture cushions and Aqua Liberty supported bathing system.”

The Sella Universal Seating System

Innovation – how do we get ‘better’?

Innovation comes in many guises. How can we make the most of them?

Under the heading of innovation in healthcare we see the process of developing and adopting new or improved therapies, technologies, products, services, and processes to improve patient outcomes, increase access to care, and enhance overall healthcare system performance. Innovation encompasses everything from major breakthroughs like new drugs and treatments to smaller, incremental changes like redesigned workflows or digital tools, with the ultimate goal of meeting personal and public healthcare needs more effectively and efficiently.

There can be considered to be four types of innovation – disruptive (e.g. AirBnB, Uber, film or music streaming), incremental (e.g. camera enhancements from one version of an iPhone to the next), sustaining (e.g. each new model of a car has a new benefit to keep it ahead of the competition), and radical (e.g. cell phones). In healthcare, each type offers distinct pathways to solving market challenges and each has a contribution to make to healthcare. In assistive technology, the majority of innovations are incremental, and most of the examples covered in this article fall into this category. For example, this might entail more sophisticated electronics on a powerchair that give the occupant a smoother ride or more access to a wider selection of devices. Many of the innovations ‘on show’ at exhibitions like Naidex, Posture & Mobility Group, Rehacare, etc., will not be obvious to the naked eye, and so a quick glance and walk by will mean that you’ve missed the hidden gem. So do take the

time to ask what’s new, and what are the advantages and benefits of each innovation.

DRIVERS FOR INNOVATION

There are various drivers behind the innovations we have enjoyed in the realm of assistive products. Some of these have arrived on the back of new legislation, new product ISO, EN or BS standards, or even geo-political changes. Some have come from the advantages that modern electronics, or new materials can offer. Some from a creative or lateral thinking approach to solving a clinical challenge, or directly from user experience. There are also commercial drivers to keep ahead of the competition, and to keep products up-to-date, both physically and aesthetically, in the eye of a product’s user.

MATERIAL DIFFERENCES

For assessing individuals’ postures and risks of skin tissue injury, I have seen over the years the radical innovations in pressure mapping technologies with the progress from a ‘clinic-based’ small array of expensive and fragile individual sensors that took a one-off reading from each sensor, to portable

systems with materials, technology and software that give continuous arrays of data very quickly – and at a price that is affordable for nurses in the community to be able to take out with them routinely, and that are so simple to use that the fear of new technology factor has been taken away.

On the geopolitical front, the NHS has been introducing increasingly strict requirements on suppliers relating to carbon footprints and zero-carbon policies. This initiative has been concentrating on manufacturers and manufacturing processes. There is hope that they may take this through into the actual products procured, with more emphasis on a circular economy1

A good candidate in the latter category has been the introduction of 3D spun thermoplastic elastomers - of the type to be found in the NEST pressure care products (Figure 2).

For skin health, the NEST can provide comparable pressure care to a foam cushion or mattress, but also the 3D random loop structure of the polymer web absorbs various of the shear strains under the skin tissues. The open structure allows for heat and water vapour dissipation. The structure is maintained in use and provides a ‘springiness’ which facilitates movement, enabling turning in bed or movement on a cushion, thereby offering further pressure redistribution properties and aiding independence. From the carers’ point

I DRIVE HEAD CONTROL SYSTEMS

of view, the light weight means that NEST mattresses can be lifted and turned by a single person, providing a major manual handling advantage. Unlike polyurethane foam, the NEST core material can be washed and disinfected whenever necessary, and also unlike foam, the material can be chopped up and melted down to be reused in new product – also avoiding the need of disposal in landfill, or incineration, which are both expensive and damaging to the environment.

RADICAL CHANGES

In recent years we have seen some ‘radical’ changes in the wheelchair seating world. One example of where modern electronics can make a large difference was the introduction of the iDrive by Stealth (Figure 3), wherein a person who cannot use a joystick to drive a powerchair, but could use alternative controls, can now drive their chair just as smoothly, thanks to the speed and algorithms incorporated into the software.

Other radical changes have come from products which match the person’s biomechanical function. One

example is Bodypoint’s Dynamic Arm Support (Figure 4), which supports the arm in an anatomically correct position at the shoulder joint and forearm, enabling improved function and reducing the risk of pain and shoulder subluxation for the user (in contrast with what an ‘arm rest’ on a standard chair does).

Another example is the EpiC seating system (Figure 5), again from Stealth, which facilitates the back support to move in parallel with changes of angle at the hip joint, removing shear forces from the back and keeping the accessories around the torso and head in constant alignment with the trunk as the upper body moves.

INCREMENTAL CHANGES

The Tripp Trapp children’s chair is a feature in many homes around the world. It was originally designed in 1972 by Peter Opsvik, for his son Tor, and millions have been sold since. A Tripp Trapp is on the ‘wall of fame’ in the Design Museum in London displaying what people have voted as design icons.

Around 40 years ago, Jon Prout in the UK saw the benefits of the chair’s ability to grow with a child, but found that the basic design had shortcomings for use with children with behavioural and physical challenges, and so he created the Breezi, which had an extended footprint at the front

to reduce the risk of tipping over, and accessories to accommodate the more special needs of the challenged youngsters. He broadened the range as well, into three sizes to accommodate the needs of different markets. The innovation was to adapt something that existed for a general audience to make it accessible to a wider market. Other manufacturers have designed their own variations on a height adjustable chair, but the Breezi is the only one with the DNA of a Tripp Trapp.

Nearly 10 years ago Jon’s company was merged into BES Healthcare in Bristol, and BES has been working on incremental changes to meet the subtle changes that have evolved in the Breezi’s marketplace. One example was the early modification of the slots in the seat plates for placement of the pelvic positioning belts to meet initially BS 8625 and latterly ISO 16840-15, where the belts needed to be able to be placed across the thighs and in front of the greater trochanters – an example where new standards have driven change.

The knock-on from this was the child’s pelvic belt was now positioning them properly and they did not need a fixed pommel to stop them sliding out of their seat, and instead the quick release alternative could be used appropriately as a medial knee support. The positioning benefit was supported further by the introduction of an optional preischial pad under the seat pad, which also helped to reduce the tendency of the child to slide forward.

Some of the incremental changes have been more subtle. Slight variations in the back rail dimensions between the larger and smaller versions meant that it was difficult to put a wider width seating system into the medium height version. These have all been standardised so that customers can have full interchangeable modularity between the original three heights and the three

widths, and that if, for example, over time the height is still right but the width is now too small, they can just upgrade the width-related items.

SUSTAINING CHANGES

Earlier this year, BES introduced a smaller height model to the Breezi range, in the form of the Teeni (Figure 7). This ‘innovation’ fits in the ‘sustaining’ category. This model uses the same components as the other versions in the Breezi range, and it’s only the ‘z-legs’ which differ. The height has been designed for a nursery or other environments with toddler height tables. For greater flexibility the foot plates can be mounted at standard incremental heights from the floor upwards.

RESISTANCE TO INNOVATION

‘Innovation’ implies change. Change can take us out of our comfort zones. But, apart from taking people out of their comfort zones, why is it so difficult to get any innovation taken up within the NHS?

There is the adage that “no-one has ever been sacked within the NHS for doing what has always been done”. This inertia has also been exacerbated by juniors learning at the feet of their seniors, and so local and older ways are passed on. However, if the senior has invented a new way of doing something, that will be included. Which leads us to the ever-present NIH (Not Invented Here) syndrome. There

have been many pilot studies carried out in individual trusts or communities, with great clinical or financial benefits established, but these seldom lead to adoption elsewhere. Even a positive NICE report does not often lead to broadened take up.

A change in regulatory aspects will often be overlooked if the institution thinks there is no oversight and they can get away with it, with the driver being the avoidance for as long as possible in incurring an additional cost to meet the legislation. An example of this is that is it implicit in the MDD, and explicit in the EU MDR, that reusable medical devices must be processed (washed and disinfected) by or within devices that are themselves registered as medical devices. As a minimum a washer has to be a Class I device, and a washer-disinfector or disinfectant a Class IIa device. But how many bodies that are reprocessing medical devices are actually currently compliant?

PROCUREMENT INHIBITORS

Another uptake inhibitor is that procurement policies are often restrictive and fail the system by only allowing the tendering of existing equipment and technologies, with the only guideline, in reality, being how low a price can be achieved on day one. It’s easiest just to buy the same items as we bought before, and it’s easiest to write a tender around products rather than the outcomes or benefits that a tenderer’s offered products might provide.

There tends to be nothing built into tender scoring around incorporating any elements of a circular economy. There is little regard as to what a little extra cost today might have on long term savings in both costs or patient well-being. Sometimes the inherent silo-thinking around “why should I

spend a bit more in my department when it only saves another department some costs”, blocks the adoption of innovation, or even cost-effective procurement.

In conclusion then, it’s inertia within the colossus that is our health and social provision structures that will continue to block innovation. Until government starts to lead from the top and direct local procurement to change their ways: by doing what we have always done, we will get what we’ve always got!
