She says: “It represents the freedom to plan ahead and ensure my mobility is supported on my terms.” Inspiring words indeed. Fashion icon puts the chic into stairlifts

Fashion and design icon Dame Zandra Rhodes is proving that accessibility is en vogue by starring as the face of the new design-first stairlift from Stannah.

She rewrote the style rulebook, dressing rock stars and royalty, from Freddy Mercury to Diana, Princess of Wales. Now, she’s redefining mobility. Zandra states: “With its design-first, contemporary style, the Stannah 158 challenges outdated perceptions of what a stairlift should look like. Its luxe black and tan leather touches complement modern interiors beautifully.”

Stannah’s latest offering blends

seamlessly into Zandra’s London home – more specifically, her maximalist stairwell which leads up to a vibrant open-plan living space complete with mannequins draped in her gorgeous garments, bedazzled upcycled mirrors and abundant floral sprays.

interior spaces. “We’re challenging the outdated notion that accessibility means compromise,” said Kate Sheehan, Occupational Therapist at Uplifts. “This partnership with Ayisha proves that mobility aids are changing – they can be both functional and beautiful, fitting seamlessly into any home’s aesthetic.”

THE RETAILERS’ CHOICE

Wondering which seating and cushion products are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight a product that stands out for them…

Hybrid

Power 18" Cushion from Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare

“The Hybrid Power 18" Cushion is a seating solution designed for people who spend long periods sitting, such as wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.

"While it looks like a standard cushion, it offers much more. It is a dual-purpose pressure care solution combining high-quality foam with built-in air cells to help prevent pressure sores and provide longlasting comfort. This ‘step-up, step-down’ approach means users don’t need to be moved to change cushions, reducing disruption and risk

“This cushion has a dual-function design. On its own, the soft, foam helps spread weight evenly to relieve pressure, ideal for everyday use or for those at low to medium risk. When connected to the Theia Digital Pump, the cushion becomes active: gently inflating and deflating its air cells in a cycle. This movement improves blood flow and takes pressure off vulnerable areas.

“The cushion also includes features like low-pressure alerts, a safety auto-lock, 10-minute alternating cycle and is easy to clean, making it suitable for both home and clinical environments. It's part of a modular system, meaning the same pump can be used with other pressure care products from the range, great for carers and care homes.

“The Hybrid Power Cushion is a smart, flexible way to combine comfort, skin protection, and peace of mind in one easy-to-use product.”

"HIGHEST RATED BATTERY ON THE MARKET "

Pre-inflated Seat Cushion from Ehob

“The Pre-Inflated Seat Cushion by Ehob provides exceptional comfort and reliable pressure injury prevention for users at risk of developing pressure ulcers.

“This lightweight, ready-to-use cushion delivers instant support without the need for pumps or adjustments. Each cushion is pre-inflated and sealed, ensuring consistent performance straight out of the package. Its unique air-cell design evenly distributes body weight, reducing pressure on vulnerable areas such as the coccyx and ischial tuberosities. This helps to maintain healthy skin integrity, particularly during extended periods of sitting.

“Constructed from durable, softtouch vinyl, the cushion conforms gently to the body’s contours for improved comfort and stability. It’s easy to clean and maintain, supporting infection control protocols across a wide range of care settings.

“The cushion’s non-slip base and lightweight portability make it ideal for wheelchairs, general chairs, and transport use, offering users both protection and dignity wherever they sit. It also represents an affordable, simple solution for preventing pressure injuries before they start.

“With no complex set-up, moving parts, or maintenance required, the Ehob Pre-Inflated Seat Cushion combines clinical performance with everyday practicality.”

Recliners Chair from Seminar Group

“We have always sold a wide range of riser recliners in both of our showrooms since opening in 2007.

"Over the years we have had many different suppliers and we recently introduced another company to our range – Recliners, part of the Seminar Group. This range of chairs, now available in our showrooms, is proving very popular with our customers. The chairs have a very modern look to them and come in various different fabric colour choices.

“There are two different backs available, three-tier and lateral, giving the customer a choice of what is more comfortable for them. They come in different sizes, including petite, compact, medium and large.

“One of the main selling features of this range of chairs is that the five-year warranty covers everything, including the fabric, which is very unusual as most manufacturers only cover one year warranty on the fabric.

“There are additional accessories available for the range of chairs including head, seat and arm covers, head roll and head pillow for added comfort. The customer can also upgrade and have heat & massage built in, a reading light, gliders or a USB port for an additional cost.

“We believe these chairs are going to do really well in our showrooms as the quality of them are really nice and our team like the comfort of them compared to some other chairs available.”

Brecon Rise & Recliner from Primacare

“The Brecon range of rise & recliner chairs are built on a super strong metal framework that passes the test of time and stays smooth and stable for many years.

“The interface surface of the seat is often the only thing considered by the client, and in this case it is supremely comfortable yet properly supportive to assist in correct posture and movement. This chair can come in a variety of coverings and colours to match existing furniture or can come as part of a suite to fully furnish a room.

“It is just one of a range of styles from Primacare, all of which can be tailored to suit individual customer requirements. As a British made product it certainly has the quality to match the style.”

Vicair Vector O2 Wheelchair Cushion from Invacare

“The Vicair Vector O2 Wheelchair Cushion uses hundreds of small, air-filled SmartCells that adapt to the user’s shape, distributing pressure evenly and helping to prevent skin breakdown.

"Its intelligent design ensures both softness and stability, while the compartmental layout keeps the user securely positioned, particularly around the pelvis and thighs. This promotes balanced sitting and helps to maintain correct posture, whether used at home, work, or outdoors.

“The Vicair Multifunctional O2 Flex Back complements the cushion perfectly, offering adaptable lateral and lumbar support that adjusts to the user’s individual needs. It helps stabilise the upper body, improves comfort, and reduces fatigue over longer periods of sitting. Like the cushion, it is fully machine washable and designed for optimal airflow, maintaining hygiene and comfort with minimal maintenance.

“Both products are lightweight, easy to adjust, and require no air pumps or regular pressure checks. Available in a range of sizes, they provide a dependable, low-maintenance solution for wheelchair users.

“Highly recommended by Ability Plus, we have also found that occupational therapists favour this combination for its excellent pressure care performance, postural support, and long-term user comfort.”

Supershape Back Cushion by Spex Seating

“As someone who assesses and prescribes wheelchair and powerchair seating for clients with a wide range of needs, I look for products that are comfortable, adaptable, and clinically effective. The Supershape Back Cushion is one of my go-to solutions.

“What I really value about the Supershape is its versatility. It provides a soft, supportive surface while allowing for detailed contouring to accommodate or correct postural asymmetries. It can be fitted with additional lateral supports or headrests

and is easily adjusted as a client’s needs evolve – it is particularly useful for those with progressive conditions.

“At Unique Mobility, we take a clientcentred approach. There’s no one-sizefits-all, and we often combine products from multiple suppliers to achieve the best outcome.

“The Supershape stands out for its compatibility with a wide range of wheelchair and powerchair bases and its adaptability over time. It’s a reliable, versatile backrest that helps me provide my clients with the comfort, postural support, and long-term flexibility they need. I keep one in my van for assessments – it’s a trusted, readyto-go option I know will deliver great results.”

Trade Talk

As Scooterpac unveils its latest new product, THIIS talks to Scott Lawrence, Sales Director, to find out more about how the firm has been evolving…

REFLECTING ON 2025, WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR SCOOTERPAC IN TERMS OF THE NEW PRODUCTS THAT IT LAUNCHED INTO THE MARKET?

“The new product highlight for 2025 has to be the Atom Fold. Earlier this year we added even more value to this product by reducing the weight to just 14.2kg.

“Since its launch the Fold has been incredibly popular with all our dealers.

Customers have particularly praised the affordable dual battery option, chassis stability, it’s feature rich offering and product reliability.”

THE CABIN SCOOTER IS AN ICONIC SCOOTERPAC PRODUCT – CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY NEW UPDATES RELATING TO THIS PRODUCT?

“The Cabin Car has always been a standout in the Scooterpac range. We

have recently made some exciting developments. By strengthening our supply chain, we have been able to reduce the overall cost of the product, making it more accessible for dealers without compromising on quality.

“The introduction of new standard colour options has also proved hugely popular, giving customers even more opportunity to personalise their Cabin Car to their style.

“Behind the scenes, we are continually refining our internal Quality

Scooterpac exhibiting at Rehacare 2025

Management System to make sure every single Cabin Car leaves us in perfect condition. It’s all part of our commitment to raising the bar and delivering the premium mobility experience.”

HOW HAS THE FIRM ITSELF BEEN EVOLVING OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS IN TERMS OF RECRUITMENT?

“There has been lots of onboarding and training over the last few months. We are delighted to welcome Dan Thaxter to the team as International Sales Manager. Bringing a wealth of industry experience, Dan has already strengthened our relationships with

our current European distributors, represented the firm at Rehacare, and is welcoming new customers into the Scooterpac family.

“As the growth journey continues, we are aware of how important a reliable and responsive customer support team is to our partners. Recently, our sales support team has welcomed recruit, Jack Smith and team member Scott Pinkney, looking after the north and east UK areas respectively.”

DOES SCOOTERPAC HAVE ANY PLANS TO RECRUIT FOR ANY FURTHER ROLES?

“Last month we announced changes to our sales areas. Previously spilt into two, the UK now has three areas: north, south and east. Each team is comprised of three team members, an area sales manager, account manager and sales support administrator. The reason we have added extra resource is to keep pace with our growth and make sure our partners receive the quick, dedicated service they deserve.

“We have plans to recruit for further roles into 2026. Currently, we are

expanding our marketing team with new roles such as content creator and market research data analyst.

“Our marketing team growth is to ensure Scooterpac is best positioned to raise product awareness, empower dealers with tailored marketing support and drive growth through research and business intelligence.

“Anyone interested in these roles or those with a sales or account management background are encouraged to express their interest by emailing careers@scooterpac.com.”

HOW DOES SCOOTERPAC HELP TO SUPPORT ITS DEALER NETWORK? AND CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT YOUR NEW DEALER DAYS?

“So far this year we have organised several Dealer Days – a chance for customers to have a great day out, visit the Scooterpac factory and to meet other members of the team. ‘The Inside Track’ event has provided dealers with an opportunity to get hands on with the company’s journey so far, and our vision for 2026 and beyond.

“The fun-packed day includes being involved in new product development discussions, marketing and technical training, product testing on the rugged off-road track, all paired with some brilliant refreshments and hospitality. Previous attendees have described the day as, ‘fresh’, ‘innovative’, ‘encouraging’, ‘exciting’ and ‘driven’.

“We do have plans to organise more Dealer Days into 2026. If you feel this would benefit you and your team, and would be interested in attending, please email sales@scooterpac.com

ARE YOU SEEKING TO RECRUIT DEALERS IN ANY PARTICULAR AREAS? ALSO, HOW CAN RETAILERS INTERESTED IN BECOMING A DEALER GET IN TOUCH?

“We look forward to hearing from any existing or new mobility retailers across the UK. The best way to contact us to discuss partnerships opportunities and book product demonstrations would be to email sales@scooterpac.com or call 0330 124 1733.”

big product. What I can reveal, is that over the next few months we will be launching new products within the popular and affordable Savvy range.

"We’re incredibly excited to introduce the Savvy Defender (see below) to the UK market — the response from retailers has been overwhelmingly positive.

the design process, and their feedback played a key role in shaping the final product, ensuring it meets real-world needs for both users and the trade.

“We will also be refreshing the premium Ignite models offering a more modern look and feel. And several other models that will be revealed shortly.

“2025 has already been an incredible year here at Scooterpac, and we’re always looking for ways to raise the bar in how we support our partners.

"It’s an exciting time to be working with Scooterpac as we look to grow our product offering, implement business support systems and strengthen customer care."

Family values in the Fens

The new owner of Fen Mobility Centre, a long-running mobility retailer in Cambridgeshire, has plans to enhance her showroom’s product range to meet an even wider variety of needs…

Fen Mobility Centre offers a comprehensive array of mobility solutions, alongside daily living aids, gadgets, and walking supports.

THIIS recently caught up with Sara Cunnington, director and occupational therapist at Fen Mobility Centre, to learn more about how her clinical background has influenced her new role as director of Fen Mobility Centre.

Having long admired the positive impact of Fen Mobility Centre within the community, Sara purchased the

business alongside her husband earlier this year. Sara had previously worked as an occupational therapist for 17 years across Cambridgeshire and Fenland, primarily within community settings, and her hope was that the

new venture would gave her the opportunity to bring her clinical expertise into the mobility sector. She wanted to ensure that customers were benefiting not only from high-quality products but also from the insight and support of someone who understands their needs from a healthcare perspective.

She says: “I am proud to work alongside our excellent team to continue developing our service, expanding our product range, and ensuring that Fen Mobility Centre remains a trusted source of independence and support for our customers.

“Throughout my career, I have enjoyed every element of OT practice— from leading teams and supporting professional development to working directly with patients and helping them live more independently. My passion has always been about making

a meaningful difference in people’s everyday lives, whether through tailored advice, practical solutions, or compassionate care.”

MOBILITY SOLUTIONS

Fen Mobility Centre offers a comprehensive array of mobility solutions – from mobility scooters and powerchairs to riser-recliner furniture, profiling beds, and home adaptations like stairlifts and ramps – alongside wheelchairs, rollators, daily living aids, gadgets, and walking aids.

“Our services are as much about people as products,” emphasises Sara. “We provide test drives, home and showroom assessments, same-day collection or next-day delivery, set-up services, equipment hire, insurance, servicing and repairs, all underpinned by a ‘zero pressure guarantee’ and excellent aftercare. With over three decades of experience, VAT-free pricing, and an onsite occupational therapist, our ethos centres on compassionate, professional support tailored to individual needs.”

Sara says that the business’s recent strategic partnerships have expanded its selection of travel-friendly mobility

items, enhancing its ability to meet diverse customer requirements across Cambridgeshire and Fenland. She continues: “More important than anything for us is the personal service, care, compassion and time. We are never in a rush.”

It is a personal customer service which is enhanced by a team of friendly and experienced members of staff. These include Sonia, the Centre manager, customer advisors Jo, Lucinda and Amanda, and engineers Kevin and Dave.

The showroom and repair centre was moved to a new location on Lancaster Way Business Park between Ely and Witchford in April 2025. Sara says the move was so important and they put a lot of time and attention into getting the newly located site right.

The new showroom is handily located alongside other amenities, including a coffee shop and the RAF Witchford museum. There is accessible parking located right in front of the showroom which offers level entry into the showroom.

“Our accessible toilet has been described by one customer as the best public toilet they’ve ever seen,” Sara adds, who says that their customers are

A wide selection of mobility scooters

Back Options

Lateral backs on recliners offer extra side support, gently cradling the body for comfort, stability, and better posture.

Waterfall chair backs feature layered cushions that follow the spine’s curve, enhancing lumbar support and reducing lower-back pressure for lasting comfort.

Cascade chair backs have a smooth, tiered cushion design that contours down the backrest, delivering targeted support to the shoulders, lumbar area, and lower back for ergonomic comfort.

Letterbox chair backs feature horizontal cushions for a sleek look and targeted back support.

Horizon chair backs offer a wide, low-profile design that provides balanced support and a modern, open feel.

incredibly warm and friendly.

“The great thing about our customer base is how broad it is. We see different people every day and we also get lots and lots of repeat business. Word of mouth drives most of our custom.”

This year, Sara says that she has seen customers become increasingly interest in all things lightweight.

“We have seen very strong interest and sales in foldable scooters, boot scooters and the move to lithium batteries.

"We know that there is a fine balance between compact and light on the one hand, and usage on the other hand, but we are seeing a swing towards convenience and weight.”

SUPPLIER SUPPORT

Fen Mobility Centre offers a large range of market leading suppliers and Sara says that they are doing well with all of their mobility scooters and wheelchairs, as the range they offer meets the differing needs of their customers.

“Our suppliers have been incredible since we took over the business earlier this year,” comments Sara. “We are incredibly grateful for the help and support we have experienced. Supply and price consistency is incredibly important to us, as is great product innovation.

“But we have learned very quickly that it is the support when things go wrong that really counts. We never want to let a customer down, so when there are problems, supplier support and agility can make a huge difference

to putting things right and getting the customer back in good position quickly.”

Fen Mobility Centre have two engineers at present and Sara says that they are considering taking on an apprentice. They are kept busy both in the retailer’s own workshop and visiting customer homes.

She adds: “We have been investing heavily in new equipment including hydraulic tables, battery testers, diagnostic equipment and tooling to ensure that we provide the best possible service.”

The website is incredibly important for the business, says Sara, as it is an opportunity for customers and potential customers to get an understanding of what they sell and who they are.

“We engage more and more with customers online. That said, I feel strongly that in-person demonstrations, fittings and assessments are essential to ensure that the customer leaves with the right solution for their needs.

“Perhaps it is all my years as an

occupational therapist and wanting to parensure that every customer leaves with confidence!”

THRIVING SECTOR

Sara says that she personally feels very positive about the mobility sector. “As we all live longer, the market will not shrink. I do have some concerns about some low cost imported products that sell online but do not have a support infrastructure and parts available in the UK.

“These products may appear cheap at the outset but when things go wrong, there are few avenues to resolve them. It is not good for customers and not representative of the industry as a whole.”

In the short term, Sara says that the focus is on enhancing and broadening their product range to meet an even wider variety of needs.

“Alongside our core mobility and daily living equipment, we are placing greater emphasis on sensory products – items that support comfort, wellbeing, and independence not only through physical solutions but also through sensory engagement. This reflects our ongoing commitment to understanding the whole person and tailoring support that truly improves quality of life.”

Looking further ahead, Sara says that her ambition is to expand Fen Mobility Centre beyond the single showroom, making their trusted service and ethos accessible to more communities. “By opening additional locations, we aim to provide the same compassionate, professional care and high-quality product offering to a broader customer base, while maintaining the familycentred values that define us.”

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW BENTECH MEDICAL CAME TO BE ESTABLISHED IN THE UK?

“We established our own brand Eezychair in April 2022, and our innovative product, the Eezy-Roller, which allows individuals to switch seamlessly from a regular rollator to an electric wheelchair.

"Being a completely new product with no comparable alternatives on the

market, it quickly gained traction with trade mobility dealers.

“This success led us to expand our product range in November 2022, focusing on lightweight mobility solutions at competitive pricing.

“Eezychair was founded on the current CEO’s extensive knowledge and first-hand experience with mobility products and their users.

"Frustrated by the low quality and high prices of many options on the market, the aim was to supply products

that are durable, affordable, and allow traders to maintain healthy resale margins.

“Our top-selling product, the EezyCarbon, weighs just 13kg and includes a wireless attendant controller. We also offer a new range of foldable, compact scooters, available in five vibrant colours.”

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE XSTO M4 POWERCHAIR?

“Bentech Medical announced the arrival of the XSTO M4 powerchair earlier this year.

“Utilizing advanced gyroscopic sensors, the M4 automatically adjusts the seat angle to maintain stability on slopes up to 15 degrees, uneven terrain, and when navigating obstacles. This feature ensures a safe and steady ride without constant manual adjustments.

“The M4 offers a dynamic seating system that allows users to adjust both the seat height and tilt angle with ease. These adjustments promote proper posture, improve pressure distribution, and make everyday transfers and positioning more convenient.

“Equipped with Mecanum wheels, the M4 provides seamless 360 degree movement, allowing users to navigate tight spaces and perform precise turns effortlessly.

“The wheelchair features a one-key folding system and a modular design that allows it to be disassembled into three parts, making it easy to transport and store. Its lightweight construction ensures convenience for users on the go.

“Users can control the M4 via a dedicated mobile app, offering features such as remote operation, speed adjustment, and battery monitoring. This smart control enhances user experience and accessibility.

“Designed for versatility, the M4 performs well on various surfaces, including indoor floors, outdoor paths, park visits, and even shopping trips. Its rugged design ensures reliable performance in diverse environments.

“The M4 is available in eight vibrant colours: Magic Black, Superior Purple, Burgundy Red, Blue Enamel, Pearl White, Barbie Pink, Tiffany Blue, and Sparkling Yellow, allowing users to choose a style that suits their personality.”

“The aim was to supply products that are durable, affordable, and allow traders to maintain healthy resale margins”

HOW DID THE M4 COME TO BE ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED? DO YOU KNOW HOW WELL IT HAD BEEN RECEIVED IN OTHER COUNTRIES?

“The M4 was originally developed by the founder of XSTO, an engineer who graduated from one of China’s leading universities of science and engineering.

“In 2020, he began leading a specialist team at the prestigious Guangzhou R&D Centre to bring the M4 to life. Drawing on XSTO’s decadelong expertise in elevator motor control and precision climbing technology, the team spent four years conducting extensive testing and optimisation before launching the M4 in 2024.

“Even before its UK debut, the M4 had already gained strong recognition among users and government medical departments in Germany and France. It received full medical reimbursement approval from the German government, allowing users to obtain the M4 completely free of charge, and was also added to France’s LPPR list – a government-recognised product reimbursement scheme.”

THE M4 APPEARS TO HAVE PICKED UP A COUPLE OF BIG AWARDS ALONG THE WAY. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THESE? HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS TYPE OF RECOGNITION?

Is it safe to touch?

An MDR checklist will include the biocompatibility properties of any materials which might come into contact with the skin or other parts of the body. Things are about to get easier.

This month’s article covers a rather dry subject, but, for users of equipment it is important for their safety considerations. For manufacturers there are important cost implications relating to whether they end up having to incur added costs and delays.

What we will be looking at is the need for testing for biocompatibility of the materials used in the manufacture of a product where the product may come into contact with the user’s skin (or internal organs). The key ISO set of standards is the ISO 10993 series: the starting point of these is Part 1, for which a revision is about to be published1, and the good news is that the new edition takes a more pragmatic (and therefore less expensive) approach to managing the risks.

ISO 10993 is a series of international standards for the biological evaluation of medical devices to ensure they are safe for patient contact. It uses a risk-based approach to assess biocompatibility, which is the “ability of a medical device or material to perform with an appropriate host response in a specific application”.

This involves creating a Biological Evaluation Plan (BEP) to identify potential risks and determine necessary testing for endpoints like cytotoxicity, sensitization, and irritation.

EVALUATION OF SAFETY

The international working group responsible for the ISO 10993 standards, ISO TC194 WG1, has taken the pragmatic approach in revising ISO 10993-1 to align the biological evaluation of medical devices with the structured risk management principles of ISO 14971 7 .

The update reflects evolving regulatory expectations and promotes

scientifically justified, ethically responsible evaluations. The new edition de-emphasizes the use of in vitro or in vivo testing, while presenting a broader perspective of consideration of all evidence of biological safety.

Before this revision, manufacturers were repeatedly having to go down the identical path, where there was considered to be any risk from the materials used in their products, of having to go through a series of laboratory tests as prescribed in Part 5 of the series, and then the possibility of having to go onto in vivo (i.e. animal testing) as described for example in Part 10. Further, a recent report has indicated that data from Part 5 tests has been determined to be unreliable2 .

KEY ASPECTS OF THE NEW EDITION OF ISO 10993

Risk-based approach: The standard has shifted to a risk-based strategy, where manufacturers first perform a risk assessment to understand the materials and processes involved before determining which tests are necessary.

Biological evaluation plan (BEP): Manufacturers must develop a BEP, which involves reviewing all available data and identifying any gaps that require further investigation or testing.

Contact duration: Devices are categorized by how long they will be in contact with the patient (limited, prolonged, or long-term exposure), which helps determine the extent of the required evaluation.

Endpoints for evaluation: The standards guide testing for various biological endpoints, including most importantly:

• Cytotoxicity

• Sensitization

• Irritation  and also

• Systemic toxicity

• Genotoxicity

• Pyrogenicity

• Haemocompatibility

WHAT’S NEW?

The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

• the document has been completely reorganised and the title has been aligned with the risk management framework described in ISO 14971

• additional content has been added to provide more guidance and clarification of calculation of exposure duration

• additional content has been added to provide more guidance on characterization of the device and identification of biological hazards

• the identification of biological effects (previously referred to as biological end points) has been modified

• the term “externally communicating” has been replaced by language which reflects the specific tissue contact of device components

• the term “effects after implantation” has been changed to “local effects after tissue contact” as some nonimplanted devices also will need this type of assessment

• Annex A has been revised to provide only guidance on materials characterization, the rest of its former content has been incorporated into the main text

• Annex B has been added to explain the rationale for the changes to biological effects listed in Table 1 to Table 4.

Table 1 covers biological effects for medical devices in contact with intact skin (Figure 1), Table 2 to 4 each add

further boxes to be considered for devices respectively in contact with: intact mucosal membranes; either breached or compromised surfaces (skin or mucosal membranes) or internal tissues other than circulating blood; and circulating blood.

TYPES OF ACCEPTABLE EVIDENCE BEYOND TESTING

What are the alternatives that are now acceptable? ISO 10993-1:2025 encourages the use of diverse, scientifically valid evidence to support biological safety, including:

• Chemical characterization and toxicological risk assessments

• Material and process knowledge, including historical biocompatibility data.

• Clinical experience and postmarket surveillance.

• Published literature and peerreviewed studies.

• Biological equivalence to predicate devices.

• Structured gap analysis to identify cost-effective data needs. These sources should be evaluated for evidential value, and testing should only be performed if the risk management process identifies a biological hazard that cannot be addressed through existing data.

STRUCTURED RISK MANAGEMENT INTEGRATION

Biological evaluation is now explicitly

Dr Barend ter Haar has been involved in seating and mobility for over 35 yeas, including lecturing internationally, and developing international seating standards. For further information on the topic contact barend@beshealthcare.net www.beshealthcare.net

embedded within the ISO 14971 process:

• Risk estimation guides the need for testing.

• Evaluation must be planned, justified, and documented by qualified professionals.

• The goal is to demonstrate that residual biological risk is acceptable, and that no hazardous situation remains requiring further control.

SOURCES OF ACCEPTABLE EVIDENCE

There are listings in different parts of the world of chemicals that experience and existing testing have been shown to be biologically safe.

This includes, for example, Annex A from the FDA GSA guidance3 (see Figure 2 for listed safe materials); EMEA REACH compliance, indicating absence of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC)4,5; or Oeko-Tex compliance of textiles6, indicating over 1000 substances that have been tested and the textiles

Poly butylene terephthalate (PBT)

Polycarbonate (PC)

Polychloroprene, such as neoprene

that are certified as harmless to human health.

Beyond this, the manufacturer can use: a history of safe use from the supplier; published literature; industry reportable events; EU MDR clinical evaluation reports; and/or other registration or post-market surveillance evidence.
