New podcast delivering unfiltered mobility talk

Anthony Mitchell, Director of Leedsbased Independence Mobility, has teamed up with Aussie assistive technology professional Justin Boulos to launch a new mobility podcast, Wheel Chat.

Designed to be unfiltered, unbiased and honest, Wheel Chat explores the world of mobility equipment, sharing real-life experiences, opinions, and plenty of humour along the way.

New episodes air every Tuesday morning, offering listeners a mix of insightful conversation, practical advice, and candid industry chat.

Anthony says: “Wheel Chat was born out of the chats we were already having, usually full of laughs, the

odd rant, and a lot of honesty. We just thought, why not turn those real conversations into something people can actually listen to?

“There’s so much happening in the mobility world, but not many places where people talk openly about it, what works, what doesn’t, and what it’s really like day to day.”

The podcast features an exciting line-up of upcoming special guests, featuring mobility industry disruptors and leading occupational therapists. Watch episodes of Wheel Chat on YouTube at: www.youtube.com/@ WheelChatPodcast with updates about new releases available on Instagram and TikTok.

Evac+Chair sets new benchmark in evacuation planning

Evacuation chair manufacturer Evac+Chair has set a new benchmark in evacuation planning with the launch of its new online product consultant.

A pioneer in emergency evacuation solutions for different types of venues, the firm works closely with organisations to ensure the most appropriate Evac+Chair solution is selected based on a building’s layout and specific requirements through its complimentary Evacuation Assessment.

To advance this expert-led service, Evac+Chair has now unveiled Evac Xpert – a cutting-edge virtual assistant to support the completion of this assessment online.

Using intelligent decision-making to provide fast, accurate and tailored product recommendations based on the unique characteristics of each building and stairwell the Evac Xpert consultant helps organisations source the right Evac+Chair to protect their people and safeguard their premises. Visit www.evacchair.co.uk/ evac-xpert for more information.

Invacare and Direct Healthcare Group to partner up

Transatlantic private equity firm Rhône has stated its intention to acquire a majority shareholding in Invacare and Direct Healthcare Group (DHG).

The strategic combination is expected to bring together two complementary companies – each with established reputations for quality, clinical performance. Together, Invacare and DHG will operate with an expanded global footprint and a broader product and service offering across mobility, pressure care, and rehabilitation, forming one of Europe’s leading providers in the post-acute mobility care sector.

Customers and end-users across Europe will benefit from broader access to a comprehensive, high-quality product offering, combining Invacare’s strengths in manual and powered wheelchairs, including complex rehabilitation needs, with DHG’s expertise in pressure care and safe patient handling solutions.

Cornwall

Mobility opens new showroom

Truro-based Cornwall Mobility has opened a new mobility equipment showroom which will operate from the charity’s purpose-built centre in Cornwall.

Customers can explore a wide range of mobility equipment before purchasing, including powered wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and manual wheelchairs.

The showroom features a diverse selection of small aids to support daily living and independent living at

home. Specialist assessments can also be offered for seating, posture, and pressure relief.

Customers can get assessments and expert advice on driving, wheelchairs (manual and powered), and mobility scooter use.

Vehicle adaptations and driving tuition can also be given for customers with specific mobility needs.

MHRA MEDICAL DEVICE CONSULTATION

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced its intention to consult later this year on the indefinite recognition of CEmarked medical devices.

In parallel, new international reliance routes will be introduced to allow swifter access to medical devices from trusted regulators in Australia, Canada, and the United States. This will allow eligible products to follow a streamlined pathway to market, helping bring the latest technologies to patients more quickly.

The MHRA will support removing the requirement for physical UKCA markings on products and packaging once unique device identification (UDI) requirements are in place. This will reduce barriers to entry to the market while strengthening traceability and safety monitoring.

RHEALTHCARE PARTNERS WITH NHS

RHealthcare has announced that its wheelchair products and accessories are now available through the NHS Supply Chain: Rehabilitation and CommunityWheelchairs, Specialist Seating and Related Services Framework.

Awarded products include two heavy-duty manual wheelchairs –the Dash 200 HD and Dash Super HD; several lightweight aluminium frame options from the Dash Lite range; two general purpose folding back wheelchairs; and a steel modular chair in three weight options.

The assisted power drive, Todo drive, is also available from RHealthcare via this framework. Under the framework agreement, the products and spares can be used in acute hospitals, mental health and community settings.

STANNAH

CHAMPIONS

BRITISH MANUFACTURING

Mobility solutions provider Stannah has announced that its core stairlift product range has been officially awarded the Made in Britain accreditation – a prestigious mark that recognises excellence in British manufacturing.

The announcement comes at a special time for the business, as 2025 marks 50 years since Stannah began manufacturing stairlifts. Since launching its first model in 1975, the company has gone on to sell over one million stairlifts worldwide – a testament to five decades of innovation, engineering excellence and customer trust.

The accreditation confirms that Stannah stairlifts manufactured at its UK production facilities are designed and built in Great Britain, highlighting the company’s ongoing investment in British engineering, local talent, and sustainable manufacturing practices.

JENX CLOSES IN-HOUSE MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS

Jenx, a provider of life-enhancing products for children and young people with complex disabilities, has begun a formal consultation process regarding a proposal to close its manufacturing operations.

The proposed closure follows a sustained period of financial pressure on manufacturing, which has been echoed in UK manufacturing businesses supplying all sectors in recent months.

Rising costs, reduced public sector funding and a challenging market environment are placing unsustainable pressure on manufacturing operations, the firm states. Despite efforts to improve sustainability and explore alternative options, the company has not found a viable long-term future for in-house manufacturing under its current model. The proposal would see the business refocus entirely on its UK distribution arm, Jiraffe.

Handicare opens new refurbishment centre

Global accessibility manufacturer Handicare has opened a dedicated refurbishment centre at its manufacturing facility in Kingswinford in the West Midlands. Used stairlift components will undergo a rigorous reconditioning process, extending product life, reducing waste, and supporting a more circular approach to stairlift production. The reconditioned stairlifts will be available for local authorities to purchase for their service users.

The refurbished lifts will contain reconditioned packs and motors that

Taskforce calls for disability training in the aviation sector

have been restored to an ‘as new’ condition, providing a cost effective and sustainable option for local councils.

The refurbished option is available on Handicare’s best-selling 1100 straight stairlift.

The refurbishment programme aligns with Handicare’s latest Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report, which emphasises waste reduction and resource efficiency. By choosing refurbished solutions, partners can contribute directly to environmental goals while maintaining the high standards their customers rely on.

The expert Aviation Accessibility Task and Finish Group, led by former Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and set up by the Department for Transport, has unveiled a suite of recommendations advising on how to make flying more accessible for disabled people through airport and onboard aircraft.

The crossbench peer said the 19 key actions put forward by her taskforce should be “turned into action” which puts accessibility at the heart of aviation.

Disability awareness training, developed with input from disabled people themselves, should, it states, be rolled out across all aviation roles, including airline crew, assistance providers, ground services, security and hospitality staff.

Clearer passenger information is also highlighted as a necessity, ensuring people can easily access information about their travel, including how they can request and book assistance, where they can find in-airport support services and detailed guidance on how their mobility aids will be transported along the way. Passengers should also have easy access to transparent and straightforward information on complaint procedures.

Sign up for the Trusted Assessor course!

Mobility retailers can access the Trusted Assessor course through a series of three two-hour occupational therapist (OT)-led webinars to be held this autumn.

Trusted Assessor: Assessing in a Retail Environment is an accredited course, approved by OCN London at level three.

Trusted Assessors are qualified to handle simple assessments and to know when to refer more complex cases to an OT. Once qualified as Trusted Assessors, staff can be integrated into local health and social care pathways, growing the network of people qualified to support older and disabled people to live independently in the community.

Course dates include Wednesday 10th September, Thursday 25th September & Wednesday 8th October

or Wednesday 22nd October, Thursday 6th November & Friday 21st November.

The course can also be delivered as a one-day course face-to-face.

Alastair Gibbs, Director of TPG DisableAids, commented: “For TPG DisableAids the Trusted Assessor scheme has been a real boost. We have various staff trained from Level 2 to Level 4 and it has given us some real

credibility with a number of housing associations and local authorities.”

TACT’s trainers are on hand for support throughout and its monthly webinar programme tops up knowledge for newly qualified Trusted Assessors for 12 months after qualification. For more information call 01626 879528 or email info@trustedassessing.com.

Stairlifts, homelifts & access

Wondering which stairlifts, homelifts & access items are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight a product that stands out for them…

Uplifts homelift from Stannah

“Stannah Uplifts is an exciting addition for Higher Elevation to offer its customers because it represents a new standard in homelift technology, combining style, versatility, and user-friendly innovation.

“Its sleek, contemporary design ensures it blends seamlessly into any home environment, while the choice between the compact S2 and the spacious S3 models means it can suit a wide range of property sizes and layouts.

“The Uplift stands out with its light-filled cabin, customisable finishes, and discreet rail system, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits.

“Advanced safety features, including emergency backup systems and intuitive controls, provide users with confidence and independence. The straightforward installation process, requiring minimal structural changes, makes it accessible to more homeowners.

“By offering the Stannah Uplift, Higher Elevation can provide customers with a premium, future-proof solution that enhances daily living and enables greater freedom within their own homes.”

Doorline Threshold Ramp from Enable Access

“The Doorline Threshold Ramp is a brilliantly simple yet highly effective solution for tackling steps and thresholds with confidence.

“Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, this lightweight ramp provides a safe and secure way to improve access for wheelchair, powerchair, and scooter users, as well as those using walking frames.

With a durable, all-weather grip surface, it’s built to perform whatever the conditions.

“Available in three handy sizes – 3”, 4”, and 5” – the Doorline Threshold Ramp is quick to position, easy to handle, and offers a sturdy alternative to heavier fibreglass wedge ramps. It’s a great choice for improving accessibility at home, in care settings, or for community-based services.

“Whether you’re supporting customers with day to day access needs or looking for a reliable product to recommend, the ramp is a simple win – combining safety, ease of use, and practicality.”

Trio+ homelift from Stiltz

“Mobility Scotland’s home access division collaborates closely with some of the industry's leading manufacturers, and over the past few years, we have proudly gone to market promoting the Stiltz Homelift range.

“These products are exceptional, not only the products but the trade business team at Stiltz are super impressive. Its commitment to helping us develop as a dealer has been encouraging, and their input helping us to devise a value adding, go-to-market proposition and strategy has been invaluable.

“The Stiltz lifts are remarkable, a combination of modern aesthetically pleasing design coupled to innovative technology offering a lift for everyone’s needs. Each model delivers a high-impact, value-adding solution within the home, characterised nicely by style and substance.

“The lifts are comfortable, yet compact and unobtrusive. They operate quietly on electric technology, making them economical to run. There is no need for external, clunky, bulky hydraulics or pumps, as all the necessary technology is housed within the lift car. This is a significant selling point for our customers and ensures an uncompromised customer experience, every time.

“The Trio+ is the perfect wheelchair lift. It works well for individuals with reduced mobility. The lift occupies a very neat footprint, maximising living space. It also offers numerous emotional benefits, including the psychological advantage of being able to remain in the cherished family home. There is no need to move or downsize, allowing individuals to retain their emotional attachments and memories while also avoiding the costs associated with moving.”

HomeGlide Straight Stairlift from Access BDD

“At 1st Choice Stairlifts, we’re pleased to showcase the Access BDD HomeGlide Straight Stairlift – a reliable and thoughtfully designed solution for customers with straight staircases.

“The HomeGlide offers a slimline foldaway design, allowing the seat, armrests, and footrest to be tucked away neatly when not in use, helping to keep the stairs accessible for other users. Its manual swivel seat allows safe and easy transfer at the top of the stairs, while the easy-to-use joystick control ensures smooth operation with minimal effort.

“Its safety features are comprehensive and compliant with the latest standards. These include an armrest detection system, a seatbelt with sensor, safety edges that stop the lift if it encounters an obstruction, and an emergency stop button. The stairlift is battery-powered, allowing continued use even during a power cut, and comes with remote controls to call or send the lift from either end of the stairs.

“The HomeGlide also offers practical optional features such as a powered hinge rail for hallways with limited space at the bottom, and a call device for added peace of mind if assistance is ever needed during use.

“Access BDD continues to be a supportive manufacturer, and the HomeGlide remains a consistent and well-regarded product among our customers.”

Handicare 1100

Stairlift from Handicare Stairlifts

“TPG DisableAids is a major supplier and installer of stairlifts, homelifts and access products, all of which we install ourselves and provide ongoing service and repair services.

“To be able to offer a truly independent service we use products from most major brands and we can then match the customers requirements to the most suitable product.

“One of our most popular brands is the Handicare range from Savaria. To pick out a single product from that range we would choose the 1100 as it is the most popular straight stairlift we supply.

“It can be configured in many differing specifications with options such as powered swivel, powered footplate, slide track, zero intrusion, etc. which makes it a very versatile stairlift, not just for the first sale, but also for the used product market or for use on hire.

“Backed up by an extremely helpful business development manager from the company it makes the Handicare 1100 a very popular choice.

“It has had teething troubles in the past, but the sign of a quality supplier is their willingness to address those issues and apply resources to improve the product and move forward.”

Altura homelift from Access BDD

“At Anglian Lifts, we’ve seen a notable rise in demand for the Altura range of home lifts manufactured by Access BDD — and it’s easy to see why. Combining elegant design with cutting-edge engineering, the Altura has quickly become one of our top-selling products, offering homeowners a stylish, practical solution for improving accessibility within their properties.

“The Altura range stands out for its sleek, self-supporting or masonry shaft abilities, which allows for seamless integration into both new builds and existing homes. It offers exceptional flexibility in design, with a variety of cabin sizes, finishes, and door configurations to suit a wide array of architectural styles and user needs. Whether installed as a functional necessity or as a lifestyle upgrade, the Altura never compromises on safety, comfort, or aesthetics.

“Customers often remark on how quietly the lift operates and how little space it requires, making it an ideal choice for residential settings. Its reliability and user-friendly controls make it particularly popular among families looking for long-term access solutions.

“With energy-efficient technology and a smooth ride experience, the Altura range continues to set the standard for modern home lifts.

“As a retailer, it’s a pleasure to supply a product that not only meets but exceeds customer expectations. The Altura is a standout option for anyone looking to enhance independence and mobility at home.”

Freecurve stairlift from Handicare

“One of the most versatile curved stairlift solutions available is the Handicare Freecurve, a stylish and space-saving option designed to meet the needs of users with more complex staircase layouts. At Ability Plus, we regularly recommend the Freecurve to customers looking for a reliable, tailored stairlift that offers comfort, customisation, and aesthetic appeal in equal measure.

“The Freecurve is specifically engineered for narrow, winding, or steep staircases, where standard stairlifts may not be suitable.

"Its single-rail design follows the exact contours of the staircase, maximising space and ensuring a smooth, secure ride. The compact rail and slimline seat help preserve hallway space, making it ideal for homes with limited clearance.

“One of the most innovative features is the two-way swivel seat, which allows taller users to use the stairlift comfortably on narrow staircases. This function enables safe and natural

dismounting at the top landing without needing to twist the body awkwardly.

“The Freecurve also offers a wide range of customisable options, including several seat styles, colours, and upholstery finishes to complement the home environment. The optional Active Seat helps users stand and sit more easily by gently lifting and lowering the seat.

“Safety and convenience are built in as standard, with obstruction sensors, a secure seatbelt, battery backup, and intuitive toggle or remote control.

“Lead times for the Freecurve are now just one week, and installation takes only 2–3 hours, minimising disruption and allowing customers to regain independence quickly.

“At Ability Plus, we value the Handicare Freecurve for its engineering precision, flexibility, and focus on user comfort. It remains one of the most adaptable and elegant stairlift solutions available, helping users stay safe, independent, and confident in their own homes.”

STILTZ HOMELIFTS IS RUMOURED TO BE LAUNCHING A NEW PRODUCT IN SEPTEMBER, CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE PRODUCT?

“Stiltz Homelifts continues to make significant investments in research and development. We recognise ongoing innovation is essential for the longevity and sustained growth of any business. As part of this commitment, we’ve been developing a new, advanced drive system for our lifts to support global expansion. To date, over 200 units featuring this innovative system have been successfully installed.

“One of the key benefits of the new drive system is its remote diagnostic capability. This allows engineers to monitor lift status in real time, enabling quicker fault identification and proactive support over the phone. This, in turn, reduces the need for onsite visits and gives customers greater peace of mind.

“Over a year ago, we also launched the Trio Classic L — a new wheelchair lift designed specifically for larger wheelchairs. This model has been primarily installed by our local authority team and selected premier partners. As with any new product, we’ve refined and enhanced its design over the past

year based on customer feedback, ensuring the best possible experience for users.

“We’ve demonstrated both new solutions to a number of UK and

international dealers, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

“What truly excites us about these developments is the direct impact they have on our end users. With these innovations, Stiltz and our dealer network can now serve even more homes — including those with lower ceilings — helping us provide safe, reliable, and life-changing through-floor travel to those who need it most.

“It’s not just about new products, either. Our existing lift ranges remain highly successful and we continue to make regular and incremental improvements to these models as well.

Officer

ARE THERE ANY PLANS IN PLACE IN TERMS OF PROMOTING THE PRODUCT – AND ANY OTHER UPDATES – TO YOUR UK DEALER NETWORK?

“Stiltz will be actively engaging with premier partner dealers soon, as we are planning an exciting Dealer Day at our West Midlands Head Office!

“The day will consist of dynamic product presentation sessions, an opportunity to meet representatives from teams such as R&D, product management, customer service, marketing and communications, training, and tech support to learn how each supports premier partner dealers.

“Naturally, the business development team, plus Trade Director Gino Farruggio, CEO Mike Lord, and other senior colleagues will be available for dealers to meet and speak with.

“There will an opportunity to get a sneak peek at technology developments and to see the impressive head office facilities which includes a warehouse packed to the rafters with homelifts.

“Dealers will be able to hear about our strategy of holding sufficient inventory in the UK to provide fast and efficient product delivery to our customers and trade partners.”

WHAT DO YOU REGARD AS THE BESTSELLING PRODUCT IN THE STILTZ RANGE CURRENTLY?

“Our best-selling product is our Duo+ Homelift. This is one of the most compact domestic lifts on the market and, as we’re now the largest provider of homelifts in the UK, arguably the best-looking too!

“It’s standout feature has to be the size. It might be hard to believe when we say the Duo+ footprint is similar in size to a small armchair, but once a paper template is unfolded and the small size is revealed, there is a sense of wonder when people realise just how genuinely compact it really is.”

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT ANY UPDATES TO STILTZ’ EXISTING PRODUCTS? HAS IT NEEDED TO MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS RELATING TO MEDICAL DEVICE REGULATIONS?

“Due to market demand, we have added a new colour to our popular Duo+ and Trio+ Homelifts. Both are now available in a fresh, white finish. We feel this is an important development as anecdotal feedback, both in the UK and in overseas markets, tells us this is a

“Our factory is currently manufacturing these new lifts for stock, and we will be holding inventory of these in our UK warehouse in the very near future.

“Stiltz Homelifts lifts are not classified under the Medical Device Regulations (MDR); instead our approval is primarily against the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.”

HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY PARTICULAR CUSTOMER TRENDS WITH REGARDS TO HOMELIFTS IN THE UK?

“Understanding our consumers has been core to Stiltz success from the outset. We were clear the market wasn’t entirely satisfied with the provision for moving between floors and set about providing an alternative.

“The end user informs everything we do, and we are committed to investing in understanding them, their motivations and pain points.

“There continues to be a push for building 2+ storey homes in urban and suburban areas in the UK. At the same time, apartment living is quickly becoming the niche of younger people, and the ever-growing cohort of older homeowners simply don’t want to abandon their homes of many years to retirement complexes.

“We speak to customers regularly. Through this we learn they are

With a focus on ‘feel good furniture’ that utilises occupational therapy expertise to provide products that support the neck, back, and hips, the retailer certainly seems to have hit the right note with customers, garnering over 23,000 reviews on Trustpilot.

Boasting 55 accessible showrooms

HSL Chairs recently boosted its retail footprint further by investing in a larger showroom in Ipswich where it hopes to offer an “enhanced experience” for customers.

The newly updated showroom

located within a retail centre in Ravenswood features the latest styles and showcases a range of riser recliners, adjustable beds, fireside chairs, and complementary sofas.

Customers can explore a diverse selection of chairs and sofas with staff on hand to help them find the perfect fit for ultimate comfort.

Ben Waters, who was appointed to the role of CEO at HSL Chairs earlier this year, said. “We’re really pleased to

be opening our new Ipswich store in such a great location. It’s almost twice the size of our previous showroom, which means we can offer a much wider range of our specialist chairs as well as offering an even better shopping experience for our customers.

“The new showroom will feature new furniture collections from European brands Himolla and Nicoletti, offering beautifully made pieces that combine modern style with true comfort and

support. They’re designed to look great at home, but just as importantly, they feel good and are built with everyday wellbeing in mind which delivers the HSL values.”

Ben says that one of HSL’s most popular products is the Burrows Relax Chair, named in honour of its founders. He continues: “It combines beautiful design with exceptional support, tailored to the customer’s posture and comfort needs.

“The rise and recliner with this collection has been awarded a Which? Best Buy, a testament to the comfort and support it provides. Another bestseller is the Ripley Riser Recliner, which offers gentle assisted rising and reclining, making everyday life easier and more comfortable for those with mobility challenges.”

As well as being able to explore the new showroom and products, customers can experience HSL’s chair assessment service.

HSL’s ‘comfort specialists’ are trained by an independent occupational therapist to perform a personalised seven-point seating assessment to ensure the right size and fit chair for the best support of the customer’s neck, back and hips.

Specialists also offer a full product demonstration along with tailored advice to ensure each chair, sofa or bed meets every need of the customer.

EXPANDING BUSINESS

Relocating the store’s Ipswich showroom to this new, larger site represents a strategic step in the ongoing development of HSL’s retail footprint. Ben adds: “The new location not only offers greater visibility and convenience for customers, but also allows us to enhance the in-store experience.

“This move forms part of a broader plan to strengthen our presence in key markets, ensuring our retail spaces reflect the quality, care, and customer focus that define our brand.”

HSL Chairs boasts more than 55 years of experience in posture support and supplying handmade furniture to the nation.

Originally founded as High Seat Limited in 1968 by Jeffrey and Patricia Burrows in Batley, West Yorkshire, HSL began with a small factory producing supportive chairs tailored to individual requirements.

Over the decades since, HSL has grown into a trusted name in wellbeing-centred furniture, while remaining family owned.

Ben first joined HSL in his summer breaks in high school, assisting in many areas of the business. He comments: “As a third-generation family member, I was very involved in HSL even before formally entering

the workforce. I formally joined the business in September 2015 as a management trainee, evolving into Head of Logistics in the first couple of years and Operations Director in early 2023 before progressing to my current role as CEO in April 2025.”

The retailer now has over 500 employees nationwide. Ben adds: “HSL currently has 55 showrooms across the UK, offering a relaxed and supportive environment where customers can explore our collections with guidance from our trained comfort specialists.

“Our products also feature in the LivHome showroom, located in Aintree Liverpool. This is the flagship for the LivHome brand, a sister brand to HSL chairs offering a unique furniture shopping experience.”

HSL Chairs is also looking for opportunities to expand and make its “wellbeing-first” furniture accessible to more of its customers around the country, explains Ben.

“This move forms part of a broader plan to strengthen our presence in key markets”
The Burrows Relax Chair was named in honour of HSL' s founders
“There’s increasing demand for customisation and in-home services, especially among older generations”

“Our ‘home demonstration service’ currently allows us to offer our customer service in the areas we do not have a showroom; however we appreciate how valuable our in-store experience can be.

“In addition, we are looking for opportunities to improve our service and showroom experience by relocating some existing showroom locations into more accessible retail spaces. This presents the opportunity to open showrooms with larger footfall and therefore the opportunity to present more product than their predecessors.”

AWARD RECOGNITION

HSL was recently awarded ‘Manufacturing Family Business of the Year’. The awards, hosted by Family Business United, recognised HSL as a family business with a rich heritage

and strong values, demonstrating a clear purpose in both business and community initiatives.

Ben states: “We’re incredibly proud to have been recognised with this award. It’s a true testament to the hard work, craftsmanship, and family spirit that runs through every part of our business, from our factory team and comfort specialists to our head office staff.

"We believe it’s our unwavering commitment to wellbeing, quality British manufacturing, and putting our people first that helped us stand out.

“We enjoy working with a number of respected furniture brands that share our values, especially those focused on wellbeing, design, and high levels of manufacturing standards.

"Our partnerships often focus on enhancing the customer experience, whether through comfort accessories, collaborations, or service-led innovations.”

One of the main challenges in the mobility furniture retail sector, Ben explains, is changing perceptions. He says: “It is about helping people see that supportive furniture can be both stylish and deeply comfortable. There’s also increasing demand for customisation and in-home services, especially among older generations.”

Asked what is making HSL Chairs so successful in achieving this aim, he states: “HSL has succeeded by staying close to our customers’ needs, investing in clinical research with independent experts, and blending function with contemporary design.

“Our in-home assessment service, excellent customer service in our showrooms and tailored solutions have made us a trusted brand for those seeking comfort, style, and independence in their homes.”

I'm picking up good vibrations

For all of us, wheelchair occupants included, some vibrations are good, but there’s also some that are bad and need to be dampened down.

Good vibrations include those that carry sounds to our ears, light to our eyes, or signals to our phones. There are some vibration frequencies that are used by the medical profession to our advantage - for example, in treatment of osteoporosis or around therapeutic ultrasound. However, there are also ‘bad’ vibrations, such as those that lead to spasms, cause pain, tire us out, deafen us, or blind us. ‘Bad’ vibrations can be detrimental to our equipment and to our health. In this article we will look at the benefits of good vibrations, and, for wheelchairs and their occupants, how we can moderate the bad vibrations.

SOUND

Our ears are important organs –obviously for hearing, in the first place, but also for our sense of balance and for spatial awareness. The sound that we hear is a combination of vibrations which our brains interpret into information from our environment, music, words, etc. There are times when the noises are too loud, and are painful. Other times they are too quiet and indistinct, and as we get older this challenge increases, and we combat this with hearing aids to amplify the frequencies we have problems with. But how do our ears provide spatial awareness? This is accomplished by the pinnae, or ear flaps. The corrugations in these distort the sound waves as they arrive at the ears by varying amounts depending on the angles at which the sound waves arrive.

We get to learn what these distortions mean, to convert the distortions into information as to the directions from which the sound has arrived. Therefore, we should be aware of the importance of the pinnae with anything that we may place on a person’s head, and ensure that they do not interfere with them, either by pinning them back or covering them up.

ULTRASOUND

Sound wavelengths outside our auditory range can also be beneficial. Therapeutic ultrasound devices use a handheld probe that can emit sound waves into the body in a continuous or pulsed mode. Continuous ultrasound creates a heating effect in the tissues, which can help to increase blood flow and flexibility. Pulsed ultrasound, on the other hand, is used to promote tissue healing without significantly increasing the temperature.

On the other hand, ultrasound is being used for the treatment of cancer of soft tissues: high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) uses high-frequency

sound waves to generate heat at a specific focal point within the body to heat and destroy it, while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue. It’s a non-invasive procedure, meaning it doesn’t involve incisions or needles, and can be used to treat various types of cancer, including prostate, liver, or brain tumours, and other conditions like uterine fibroids.

LOW FREQUENCY VIBRATIONS

At the Victoria and Albert Museum there is currently an exhibition called Design and Disability that is open until February 2026, and is well worth visiting. This is both a celebration and a call to action that showcases the radical contributions of disabled, deaf, and neurodivergent people and communities to design history and contemporary culture, from the 1940s to now.

The Living section features a film from Canada of a blind person being guided by a brass band and the music gives him clues as to where to turn and what obstacles might be in his way. While sitting on the bench to watch this film, the seat provides regular vibrations – this and other means of providing ‘haptic feedback’ are tools to help neurodivergent individuals keep ‘grounded’ while carrying out an activity that needs concentration, such as watching a film.

HAPTIC FEEDBACK

The term haptic is derived from the Greek word ἁπτικός (haptikos)

meaning ‘pertaining to the sense of touch’ . In essence, haptikos refers to anything related to the tactile senses, including the perception, sensation, and manipulation of objects through touch. This concept is relevant to both the biological sense of touch and the technological application of haptic feedback in devices and systems.

The mechanisms behind haptic feedback vary, but typically involve a combination of motors or piezoelectric actuators to create pressure or vibration. Tactile feedback can also be triggered by surface textures or changes in temperature.

In the same section in the V&A exhibition is a Woojer jacket (Figure 2) – this jacket, originally designed for gamers to get additional sensory inputs while playing video games, has found a wider application for deaf people giving them ‘haptic feedback’ from the music at an event, even if they cannot hear it.

Low frequency physical vibrations have been used for well-being benefits for some time. Back in the 1950s and 60s’, magazines promoted vibrating bands to stretch across the stomach, buttocks, legs or arms, where the vibrations were claimed to help improve muscle tone and lose weight.

Similar technologies are available today in vibration plates, which can offer several potential benefits, including increased muscle activation, improved circulation, and enhanced flexibility. They may also aid in weight loss, improve balance and coordination, and boost bone density. Furthermore, vibration plates can help with muscle recovery after exercise by reducing soreness and stiffness.

BAD VIBRATIONS

While vibration plates may convey benefits to some users, excessive use can cause both acute and chronic injury to a range of physiologic systems, including musculoskeletal, circulatory and nervous systems.

For wheelchair occupants, the vibrations transmitted through their wheelchairs to their bodies can increase fatigue, and accentuate pain. As one occupant pointed out at a symposium at this year’s International Seating Symposium (ISS) in Pittsburgh, even a sharp jolt from a caster hitting an object could make him go into a spasm.

‘Bad’ vibrations can also cause wheelchair components to work loose or break. So what is currently available that we can apply to a chair to reduce vibrations? We’ll look briefly at different elements of a chair: its casters, wheels, frame materials, and seating.

CASTERS

Frog Legs have had their shockabsorbing caster mounts around for a number of years – its new Whisper casters additionally offer energyabsorbent tyres (Figure 3).

Energy-absorbent tyres for the main wheels are also important: in the early days of cycling and motoring pneumatic tyres made a world of difference to the operators, but punctures to these have always presented problems. These days, different infills have got around this challenge, while still offering some degree of shock-absorption.

WHEELS

For the main wheels, Loopwheels provide a great solution. Wheelchair users are exposed to levels of Whole Body Vibration (WBV) (vibration and shock) which are likely to be detrimental to their health: in particular the evidence links to increased back

pain, neck pain and fatigue. 60 per cent of manual wheelchair users report neck and/or back pain and 40 per cent modify daily activities as a result.

Research carried out at the University of Pittsburgh, presented at ISS, studied a group of 24 manual wheelchair users trialling Loopwheels. The users reported reduced neck pain, a decrease in pain interference in daily life, and fewer overall pain problems. Vibrations from daily wheelchair use were reduced by 35 per cent, while shock exposure dropped by 50 per cent compared with previous community-based studies.

Participants propelled on average about two hours a day, which is twice as long using Loopwheels than other community based studies. WBV levels fell to levels fell below hazardous thresholds defined in the ISO 2631 series of international standards focused on evaluating human exposure to mechanical vibration and shock - manual wheelchair users using Loopwheels should be able to propel up to 14-16 hours per day before being exposed to a harmful amount of vibration and shock (WBV).

Loopwheel springs are made from a composite of layers of different materials, including carbon, developed with the help of specialist bow-makers KG Archery. The rim remains rigid and, while the hub ‘floats’ within the rim, adjusting constantly as shocks from an uneven road hit the rim of the wheel. The system has been developed and tested to give optimum compression and lateral stability as well as strength and durability.

WHEELCHAIR FRAME

There are many areas where investment in technological

improvements in bicycle design and materials have benefitted wheelchair occupants. One example is the use of carbon fibre which can absorb vibrations due to its unique material properties. Its ability to deform and recover under stress, combined with its viscoelastic behaviour (where it dissipates energy through internal friction), allows it to dampen vibrations effectively, particularly those of higher frequencies. Carbon fibre also has the benefit of being light weight.

CUSHIONS

The materials from which a seat cushion or back support can make

a difference with regard to vibration absorption. Air-filled cushioning can be very absorptive, but another study from the University of Pittsburgh showed that the air-foam mix used in Varilite cushions gave the best results.

Current cushion testing is carried out as detailed in Clause 9 of ISO 16840-2 – see Figure 5.

CONCLUSION

Vibrations are all around us at a wide range of frequencies and amplitudes: most are good or useful, while others are detrimental and should be avoided where possible. Our sensitivities and our reactions to all the different types

“Over the next year, we’ll be launching new products, attending key industry exhibitions, and continuing to invest in production and automation. We also plan to grow our international presence through new dealer partnerships and expand our Bradford facility’s capabilities further.

“We’re also looking to further increase our customer support network by giving our dealers everything they need to make our products their first choice.

“I mentioned earlier the ‘Seven Pillars of Performance’, our commitment to customers and a set of core standards that guide everything we do to ensure exceptional product quality and service delivery. These pillars are the foundation of our success and reflect our promise to deliver not just stairlifts, but confidence, independence, and trust.”

HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY TRENDS WITH REGARDS TO WHAT UK CUSTOMERS ARE LOOKING FOR IN A STAIRLIFT?

“UK customers are increasingly looking for stairlifts that are compact, customisable, and aesthetically pleasing - blending in with the home rather than standing out. There’s also a growing demand for quick installation and user-friendly features, such as remote controls, safety sensors, and comfortable seating.

“Of course, customers are always looking for that combination of quality

and value for money, and here at Bespoke we’ve responded by refining our design process and offering more tailored solutions.

“Customers not only expect the highest in product quality, but the whole package, or complete satisfaction and support at every stage. This expectation has led us to introduce our own ‘Seven pillars of performance’ - underlining our commitment to customer requirements and standards of service.

“These ‘pillars’ outline everything from our meticulous testing procedures and maximising customer profitability, right through to our promise of reliability and dedication to providing top-tier training and support.”

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON HOW THE STAIRLIFT MARKET IS EVOLVING IN THE UK?

“The UK stairlift market is becoming more sophisticated, with customers expecting greater comfort, better design, and quicker service.

“There’s also more emphasis on maintaining independence at home, which is driving demand. Bespoke Stairlifts is well positioned to meet these evolving needs, thanks to our agile manufacturing, UK-based production, and customer-focused innovation.

“We have an incredible team here at Bespoke and every single member of the team is committed to making mobility simple and accessible for everyone.”
