Voorwoord Dit is het Werkboek B1 sector Handel N3-4 van de herziene methode 20/20 Business English. Je gebruikt dit werkboek in combinatie met het eveneens herziene Handboek sector Economie N3-4. Het Handboek is een uitgebreid naslagwerk waarvan je vaak gebruik zult maken tijdens, en misschien ook wel na je studie.

In dit werkboek word je regelmatig verwezen naar paragrafen in het handboek. Om een oefening te kunnen maken moet je bijvoorbeeld eerst theorie bestuderen of achtergrondinformatie lezen. Voorbeeld: in Exercise 8 (bladzijde 12) staat: Study your handbook, A11, to learn the pronunciation of the English alphabet. Als je het handboek erbij pakt, zie je dat je bij A11 informatie over de uitspraak krijgt. Dit werkboek is verdeeld in tien units die allemaal gaan over min of meer vertrouwde onderwerpen.

De antwoorden op de vragen en de uitwerkingen van de opdrachten kun je het boek zelf schrijven, zodat je altijd je werk bij de hand hebt. Na elke unit volgt een case, waarin je kunt laten zien dat je de geleerde stof beheerst en dat je communicatief vaardiger bent geworden.

De methode 20/20 Business English is bedoeld om zelfstandig leren en werken te vergemakkelijken. Als je de aanwijzingen in dit werkboek volgt en de opdrachten naar behoren uitvoert, zul je merken dat je veel vragen over Engels zelf kunt beantwoorden en problemen zelf kunt oplossen. Je docent heeft alle uitwerkingen. Bespreek met haar/hem of je over deze uitwerkingen mag beschikken. Working in a shop sometimes involves dealing with customers who do not speak Dutch. In such cases you will often be expected to use English as the language of communication.

It may be the case that you have English-speaking colleagues working with you. Who knows what the future has in store for you? You may find yourself working in shop in Great Britain or the USA in five or ten years from now!

In all these situations you want to be able to speak and understand English.

As you heard in exercise 7, Heather McPherson spelled her name. When you call people yourself, you will often be asked to spell your name, the name of the shop you work for and sometimes a complete address.

1 Listen to your teacher and write down the five names you hear spelled.

2 Work in pairs. Spell your own family name and the family name of one of your friends. If you see your classmate making a mistake, correct him or her in English as in the example.

Introducing yourself Americans are often more informal than the British when they introduce themselves. With American business people you will notice that they often use first names right from the start.

It is quite normal to introduce yourself as: ‘I’m Simon van Kasteren’ or ‘My name’s Marjolein Brands’. Never use the word ‘mister’ (Mr) or Mrs / Ms / Miss to introduce yourself. You can, however, use it to introduce others. When you introduce yourself, you may add that you come from the Netherlands / from Holland: ‘I’m Nick Vernooij from the Netherlands.’

Another useful expression is ‘I don’t think we’ve met. My name is Edwin Ong. I work for Parabrella in Amsterdam.

Or you can say: ‘Stephanie, have you met Martin Heyd, from Bielefeld, Germany?

How an Electronic Purse Works For more than a decade, prepaid cards have been used in the United States in a variety of single-purpose and limited-purpose applications. The mass transit systems of New York, San Francisco and Washington all use prepaid cards.

Prepaid cards are common on college campuses, where students use them for 5

copying machines and at cafeteria checkout lines.

Many regional telephone companies have begun selling prepaid calling cards. Applications such as these, which offer only one or a few possible uses, are known as ‘closed systems.’ An ‘open system’, by contrast, allows consumers to use a single card in a variety of locations for a broad range of purchases. When used in an open system, a prepaid card is commonly known as either an electronic purse or a stored value card.

An electronic purse system might work as follows. A bank issues stored value cards to its customers, who then transfer value from their accounts to the cards at an ATM, a personal computer, or a specially equipped telephone. The electronic purse card might also function as an ATM card or a credit card.

When making purchases, customers pass their cards through a vendor’s point of sale terminal. No credit check or signature is needed; validation, when required, is by personal identification number. Funds are

deducted directly from the cards and transferred to the vendor’s terminal. Merchants can transfer the value of accumulated transactions to their bank accounts by telephone as frequently as they choose. When the value on a card is spent, consumers can load additional funds from their accounts to the card.

What the Electronic Purse Offers To succeed, an electronic purse system will need to offer enough features of value to its three constituencies

— consumers, merchants, and issuers — to induce them to bear its costs.

In several market studies, consumers have expressed enthusiasm for the electronic purse concept and a general willingness to pay either a per transaction fee of 2 to 5 cents or annual user fees. The major attraction for consumers is convenience: using the card for small-ticket purchases such as newspapers, coffee, and various vending machine items would reduce the need to carry loose change and would speed transactions

because consumers would always have ‘exact change.’ The electronic purse would also be more convenient than checks or debit cards for smaller transactions. Because it functions independently of a bank account, the electronic purse would afford users both greater privacy and freedom from the need to record expenditures in a checkbook. The electronic purse could even promote budgeting because a user can spend only the amount on the card.
