Fairmont Pacific Rim

Botanist Restaurant to Open its Doors in Vancouver, BC Fairmont Pacific Rim Botanist, Vancouver’s highly anticipated new restaurant inside Fairmont Pacific Rim, officially opened on Monday, April 24, 2017, beginning with breakfast service. The restaurant will present a collection of four diverse spaces -a dining room, cocktail bar and lab, garden, and a champagne lounge. Executive Chef Hector Laguna’s menu depicts the culinary abundance of the region - produce rooted from the soil of the northwest, sustainably sourced seafood; and organic agricultural methods from

backyard suppliers. Signature items include root vegetables, oven-roasted halibut with spring vegetables and crab emulsion, and herb crusted lamb rack with green garlic panisse, fava and shallots. The menu is accompanied by wine director Jill Spoor’s boutique terroir-driven wine program that supports sustainable, organic and biodynamic farming and winemaking practices. Designed by award-winning Ste. Marie Design with brand and identity developed by Glasfurd & Walker, the collection of venues begins with the Champagne

Lounge. Overlooking The Lobby Lounge on the second floor, it’s surrounded by glass and planters filled with greenery indigenous to British Columbia. The Champagne Lounge is open daily from 4:00pm and offers global sparkling wines and exclusive and rare offerings from both Champagne and internationally, complemented by a menu of small plates including oysters, caviar, seasonal crudités, and local artisanal cheese platters. In contrast the Cocktail Bar, with a dark palette of Italian Terrazzo and dramatic curved glass,

is dedicated to the creative science of cocktails. Led by Grant Sceney, the hotel’s creative beverage director, and David Wolowidnyk, Botanist head bartender, the international award-winning duo created a list of whimsical yet sophisticated cocktails. The elevated beverage experience is enhanced by the Cocktail Lab with commercial kitchen elements such as a centrifuge, band saw, and roto-vaporizer. Select libations give a nod to its chemistry inspired roots and botanical background. The Deep Cove for example uses Island Gin, sea buckthorn, and blue algae and is served in a bespoke glass molded onto a log of driftwood. The adjacent Garden invites guests to linger in a glasswalled space filled with greenery, a trellis and more than 50 different types of plant species that include rare fruit bushes, and edible species such as green tea camellia, cardamom and ginger.

The sensory experience culminates in the Dining Room, a place intended to be active and engaging morning to night. A mixture of various limestone, whitewashed woods and ornate metalwork sets its foundation with pops of plant material found throughout. The layout invites guests to engage with one another, best illustrated by a series of tables that connect via a flowing ‘S’ curve banquette. The private dining room, with seating for 20 maintains interplay with the main room through its glass doors. Located at 1038 Canada Place, the dining room and garden will be open seven days per week for breakfast, lunch and dinner service, and the bar opens daily from 11:00am. Reservations can be made by visiting the website at botanistrestaurant.com or calling 604-695-5500.

Today’s guests expect quality, comfort and style at each part of their hotel experience, from a welcoming lobby or lounge, comfortable bar or restaurant and vibrant cafÊ. Wine Ayutthaya Bangkok

the World Of Hospitality

The Wine Ayutthaya Bangkok Project Studio Situated on a bank of the Chao Phraya River in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, The Wine Ayutthaya is a new leisure place for wine drinkers. The building was constructed to become a new tourist attraction in hopes of stimulating the economy of local communities surrounding this world heritage site, which was the capital city of Thailand 400 years ago. The building is a product of architectural creativity and environmental context molded into a magnet for tourists. A single story building blends in with existing large trees with carefully designed landscape. The building is 9 meters in height and 11 meters equally in width and length made entirely from steel-reinforced plywood. The interior of the wine house is divided into 4 platforms, each with its own height that serves as a vantage point for visitors to absorb the beautiful view of the river from different angles, contrasting the interior with the exterior spaces. There are 5 sets of spiral stairs attached to each platforms. The ground floor is occupied by a wine bar, and seats are placed between the staircases. The platforms and staircases are scenic viewpoints. The locally found wooden houses are the inspiration to create this steel-reinforced plywood structure. The knock-down waffle structure system which is visually light but structurally strong is being exposed by the design of floor, wall and roof. The waffle walls can be a

British Ceramic Tile Specification

New and Varied Styles In New Additions to British Ceramic Tile Specification Ranges The newest additions to British Ceramic Tile Specification ranges are fantastically diverse in their styles. From the uber modern Geode Structured Quartz (pictured, below), to the rustic Feature Tile Anthology and, in a suprising direction for the tile manufacturer, Reclaimed Wood. Refracting light from its many facets, Geode looks as crisp as a freshly cut stone. Just as in nature no two crystals take exactly the same shape, no two facets of this tile are alike. Made from a high-tech quartz based material, with a built-in hygienic armour present at surface level and throughout, this range

has unique properties of outstanding resistance to scratches, stains and heat whilst being easy to maintain. Patchwork forms part of the British Ceramic Tile Specification Feature Tile Anthology. A mix of floor and wall multiuse tiles, Patchwork gives a varied feature area. The rectified, ceramic wall tiles have 8 mini-designs in a geometric styling. The R10 porcelain Patchwork multiuse tiles are a selection of 5 very different designs; each box contains a random selection of these.

Website: www.britishceramictile.com

Reclaimed Wood is truly unique. Each piece is carefully handcrafted from the wooden hulls of antique ships. Retired long ago, the ships are pulled from the harbour and carefully dismantled by hand. The wood pieces are slowly heat-cured over 60 days before being skillfully handcrafted into statement mosaic pieces that fit perfectly together to form a beautifully varnished wall space. Complete with nail holes, knots, and with no two pieces the same, Reclaimed Wood is a perfect choice for buildings and designs that focus on natural, reclaimed materials that deserve an individualistic look.

red deer

Red Deer, A Tribe Of Makers Recreating The Art of Design and Architecture Three Architects, Designers and Friends… Red Deer is a tribe of makers formed by three friends who offer an accessible narrative to the world’s architecture and design needs. In a structure that is rarely seen in architecture, Red Deer reinvents the concept of a design practice, treating it much more fluidly by positioning itself firmly in the ever-growing digital sphere of the mobile office. Working as digital nomads provides the opportunity to explore and better engage with the world, constantly drawing inspiration from their international experiences along the way. From creating an experiential narrative with East London’s Martello Hall to developing the most intimate spaces for residential clients in Notting Hill, the team aims to always explore new forms of creation and share their skills and learnings with those they work with. Lead by Lionel Real de Azúa, Ciarán O’Brien and Lucas Che Tizard, Red Deer develops spaces and visuals to express a brand or individual’s personal story, striving to always be creators of true experience by inciting emotional connection and reflection. Inspired by the trio’s personal and continued exploration of the world, the team treat each project as a blank canvas and their love for the unexpected often forms a starting point in their work, be it stumbling

across a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture at an early morning market to finding the perfect colour in the background of a film still. What is most crucial to this is the emphasis on forming lasting relationships with their close network of suppliers and fabricators, who bring their vision to life. Building upon their clients’ aspirations, memories and personal tastes, the team draws from their own design and architectural prowess to kickstart the design process, ensuring their client is part of each idea, creation and development phase. Red Deer’s passion for storytelling through architecture and design is reiterated through the strong provenance of the sourced materials specified for each project, and underpinning this passion is the understanding behind the ethos and process of making. From detailed architectural drawings to designing bespoke furniture and tiles, they put the creative vision at the centre of each project and see it through from start to finish. According to Rem Koolhaas, 85% of buildings do not involve the input of an architect, so it’s no surprise so much ofmodern architecture has little or no skill, design integrity or ingenuity. Lionel, Ciarán and Lucas continually strive to change this by widening their reach. They seek out like-minded Website: www.reddeer.co.uk

collaborators and creative practitioners to fill in the gaps in their knowledge and skill sets. Whilst Red Deer has been creating as a collective for four years, the team maintain a childlike wonder towards the ever-evolving world of design. Lionel, Ciarán and Lucas are also heavily involved in nurturing and indeed, learning from, the next generation of designers through their teaching at the London School of Architecture, the Royal College of Art and Oxford Brookes; it is through this that they can actively be both educator and student. Their ethos is to ‘pour out, and start over’, which means a dedication to ensuring the entire design process never becomes repetitive or stale, and each venture is an opportunity for something new and exciting. 2017 will be a year of growth for Red Deer, developing and designing many new restaurants, bars and retail sites including Michelin-star chef James Ramsden’s latest venture, Magpie in London’s Mayfair. The team also seeks to extend their reach into the expanding world of boutique hotel design, whilst continuing further development of furniture and product, theatre and set design, all of which are at the forefront of their ongoing quest to better engage with the world around them.

Chu Chih-Kang Space Design

Transferring A Hotel Into A Modern Art Gallery Chu Chih-Kang Space Design Designer Chu Chih-Kang expressed the concept, “Chengdu is a cultural city. Kuanzhai Alley is integrated with present and past of Chengdu. The concept is to transfer the hotel into a modern art gallery. To make people see the history of this area, we let them to walk into the art show.”

the lobby as art works. Every room was decorated in monotone. Pictures on the wall are street views in blackand-white color, furniture in black, white or grey are in retro style. The room looks like a pop-up photo. If guests take photos in the room, they will find out they are the only colourful object in a black-and-white photo. To use the power of social media to publicize the new image of City Inn Kuanzhai Alley, when guests share these photos of staying the hotel, it would be an efficient and free advertisement for City Inn Kuanzhai Alley.

History is the main element of the gallery. Photos and products of the old good times were displayed in

In the restaurant, the characteristic plant of Sichuan - bamboo was used to decorate the ceiling and wall.

City Inn is located on the opposite site of historical attraction area - Kuanzhai Alley in Chengdu. The client wanted to renovate it with limited budget.

Outside the window, green bamboo was also plant to shelter the view to the parking lot. When the sun goes in through the green bamboo leaves, it brings a sense of freshness and delight to the monotone contemporary gallery. The designer does want to avoid the heavy atmosphere that old stuff would bring up; instead of it the designer decorated the historical objects as art pieces in the hotel. When you walk in hotel, you sense Kuanzhai Alley’s present and past, see the mixture of old and new artwork and the accommodation experience is a contemporary art sensory journey

Treves & Hyde

the World Of Hospitality

Treves & Hyde Grzywinski+Pons Treves & Hyde is a new restaurant and bar that we designed near Whitechapel in East London. The environment is also intended to accommodate both formal and casual occupation, staying open for interstitial use between meal service. It was also important to us and our client that the space could function without compromise from early morning through late night while maintaining its functional variability. So we provided ample and flexible seating, power points and areas geared equally towards both privacy and the happenstance run-ins increasingly found in modern workspaces or a cafe. We postulated that while guests might feel comfortable working or socializing in a space seemingly appropriate for dining, they could feel less at ease dining in an environment geared towards co-working. Accordingly the aesthetic typology is unabashedly that of a restaurant. The space is heavily glazed and washed in sunlight throughout the day so we were conscious of creating texture and relief in many of the surfaces while mixing materials with a sheen or luster and those that were soft and matte to augment the kinetic quality of the light while providing comfort. We designed the restaurant to be as warm, welcoming and happy (and even appetizing) at night as it is during the day, and

created the joinery and furnishings to look better with some wear and tear after heavy use. Natural stone, ceramic, brass, timber, concrete and blackened steel feature heavily in a bold but limited palette and we designed in a lot of room to accommodate generous amounts of vegetation in aged terra cotta. Website: www.gp-arch.com

Whether enjoying a casual solo breakfast over a laptop, having a cocktail at the bar, or dining formally in a party of eight, our design decisions for Treves & Hyde were predicated on inclusivity and flexibility without concession.

Managing Hotel Housekeeping In The 21st Century If you asked the General Manager of a large hotel what takes up the majority of their time, they would likely say housekeeping management, as this is at the core of their operation and its success or failure will have a direct impact on profitability. At the top of their list would be ensuring the cleanliness and orderliness of the rooms, and ensuring they are sufficiently stocked with supplies. A key activity for any General Manager is the planning of daily work schedules and the assignment of housekeepers to different tasks. From the plan, there is then the supervision of housekeeping staff to ensure that they perform their duties to the exacting hotel standards. This will include a range of activity such as room checks, cleaning and re-ordering of rooms once guests leave, scheduled deep cleans and checking public areas, all of which can be very challenging in a busy hotel. Gathering information from the housekeeping staff on maintenance issues and utilisation of supplies is often

paper-based or by word of mouth, so in practice, some things fall down the cracks which can lead to customer complaints. If you do receive a complaint, how can you check if housekeeping performed against the expected plan? What evidence do you have to aid with performance reviews of housekeeping staff? What you need is a cost-effective, easy-to-use, cloudbased software solution that can be easily deployed across a single hotel or a complete group. This should include a simple scheduling system, which can capture daily work routines and simplify the staff assignment process. In addition, integrated time and attendance recording will ensure you have a complete record of when and where housekeeping staff attended work, while a simple drag and drop tool will help you plan the daily activities and communicate them to your housekeeping staff on their Smartphones. What is more, there should be a simple means of gathering evidence that the tasks were performed as planned, along with additional capabilities to

electronically notify the maintenance team of any remedial work required; monitor utilisation and procurement of supplies; and manage potentially chargeable damage. The consumer world is awash with technology advances such as AI, voice assistants, big data and self-driving cars, so why are hotel managers in many cases still using paper for much of the above? Well, you no longer have to, by using a Facilities Workforce Management solutions like SmartTask you can automate much of the above which will provide a rapid return on investment by saving many hours of management time and ensuring improved customer service. Once implemented such a system can deliver “push of the button visibility of housekeeping staffs performance against planned activities, providing management data for employee performance reviews, along with trend analysis of key activity such as room turnaround time, cleaning duration and room checks.

Star Micronics revolutionises POS Terminal Device Choice with DIRECT iPad Receipt Printing via standard iPad / iPhone / iPod USB lightening cable Today restaurateurs have the choice of the traditional POS terminal or new and innovative tablet POS which has taken great strides in recent years to provide the flexibility and mobility increasingly required within hospitality environments. However, it has been hindered by concern for communication and connectivity issues with cable-free communication being affected by obstacles such as brick walls and even fridges and microwaves.

Faced with these issues, multisite operators have been reticent to take advantage of the flexibility and cost-savings associated with mobile tablet POS. Blanket decisions could not be taken across estates in terms of POS solutions with each venue having to be tailored according to the location, type of venue and volume of transactions. Managing an estate of multiple tablets and paired Bluetooth devices means that it can be operationally difficult to maintain the right connection between the right peripherals and devices.

From modern restaurants to 17th century country pubs, retail technology has to operate in often very diverse and challenging environments and, as a result, more traditional cabled POS terminals have been the preferred option resulting in more expensive installations.

However, the undeniable advantages of tablet POS are too attractive to ignore:

This situation is further compounded by the fact that tablet POS receipt printers need network connections and cabling for reliable printer connection and tablet charging when cable-free communication is not considered suitable.

t

Lower cost hardware

t

Lower cost software

t

Use of consumer devices meaning less training and a familiarity for employees

t

More compact footprint combined with lower costs will allow for a higher number of POS stations with shorter transaction times

t

More modern, stylish design of hardware for today’s restaurateurs

t

All the known advantages of mobile POS Cloud-based software

t

Mobility to carry out the transaction / order

t

Ability for customers to use their own devices

t

Pre-order on retailers’ apps possible

So how can restaurateurs successfully combine the advantages of tablet POS with the reliability of cabled POS terminals? Star Micronics has always led where others have followed when it comes to mobile tablet POS, partnering in 2009 with Square who famously started the move in the US towards greater flexible card payment technology with credit card payment simplification. Since then, Star has pioneered change within the POS printing industry partnering with undoubtedly the largest selection of tablet POS software houses and integrators today.

It goes without saying that in recent years, software houses and restaurateurs of all sizes have increasingly veered towards Apple iOS POS solutions due principally to aesthetic and perceived quality. With this in mind, Star has introduced the new TSP143IIIU with a unique key feature - the printer can communicate and charge simultaneously and directly with an iPad or iPhone.

The key benefits of the printer are:

As well as working with a traditional POS terminal, the Star TSP143IIIU USB printer can connect directly to an iPad or iPhone using the Apple supplied lightning cable for reliable USB communication as opposed to previous iOS wireless only technologies. As a result, the usual Bluetooth or WiFi / wired LAN set-up issues around pairing, network infrastructure, connectivity etc are eliminated from a hardware perspective. No other stand-alone POS printer can achieve this today. Simplicity itself, the iPad / iPhone can talk directly to the printer just as a USB printer talks to a traditional terminal, providing restaurant chains with the reliability required in high volume transactions or environments where wireless communication is difficult. This unique printer will now allow multisite operators to make blanket decisions across their estates by successfully combining the flexibility of tablet POS with the reliability of cabled POS terminals.

t

The option for a (mobile) tablet to be used as a fixed countertop solution

t

Zero set-up costs - literally plug-in & print with only 1 mains cable required

t

The restaurateur’s choice of operating systems is now complete with Apple iOS being as practical as Windows or Android

t

No extra cable is required as the iPad / iPhone lightning cable for charging and for handling data can be used

t

Restaurateurs can experience a reduction in hardware costs given that a USB printer is less costly than a LAN, WiFi or Bluetooth printer and tablets are lower cost than traditional POS terminals

t

Tablet charging issues are avoided with Star’s TSP143IIIU providing 2.4A

t

Lower operating costs thanks to more stations with ensured printer connection stability

t

Connection to a cash drawer as standard

SDKs and documentation enabling easy integration. Star’s experience is that many software solutions already work with the TSP143IIIU whilst others can easily integrate with the new SDK, knowing that it covers all products in the renowned TSP100 range. The TSP100 series will remain the principal tablet POS printer series of choice due to its vast connectivity models including Bluetooth and WLAN, while the TSP143IIIU is the only USB printer on the market today that can communicate directly with Apple devices. Further supported Operating Systems as well as iOS include Windows, MAC, Android, Linux, etc The new TSP143IIIU will be available from the end of May 2017 - talk to your solution provider now to book the first demo units!

How can the Tevalis system work efficiently in Casinos? Tevalis EPOS solutions are a key component in the casino technology environment, offering flexible FnB technology solutions for servicing all areas of the casino, from restaurant and bars to slots and gaming rooms. This year, Leeds saw the opening of the new Super Casino of the North – Victoria Gate Casino. Boasting 51,000 square feet over four floors, visitors can expect to find a 100+ seated poker area, 140 slot machines, 24 table live gaming zone and 80 electronic gaming terminals. Alongside this, a VIP area, valet service, three bars surrounded by HD screens and its own restaurant serving Yorkshire sourced produce. For a fast-paced venue like this, Tevalis understood how important it was for both the team and visitors to have a system in place that would work efficiently during service whilst also offering tools for management capable of monitoring and managing all business activities. This includes everything from Sales, CashUp and Service reports to having the ability

to manage end to end stock control including delivery tracking, recipe and menu engineering, supplier management, stock movements and par level and auto order facilities. To ensure the customers journey and experience was maximized to its full potential, Victoria Gate Casino decided on 10 of our 8 handhelds to service food and beverage orders across all floors and all gaming areas. The Tevalis handheld solution provides a state of the art hand held terminal with all the functionalities you would receive from a standard POS terminal, thus giving huge flexibility to the business. Operating seamlessly in conjunction with the POS, the handhelds allow staff to easily and quickly locate product keys, input orders at the customers table and transmit the order directly to the kitchen order printers, without having to visit a bar or the kitchen. This allows the ordering processing time to be much quicker, ensuring the customer is served in a fast and efficient manner.

As Victoria Gate Casino offer a loyalty card system for different levels of players, it was also important for them to have an integration that would allow them to manage this. With our EPOS integration to Playtechs Intelligent Gaming software, we were able to meet this requirement. The integration means that the connection to the casinos player tracking system is enabled, allowing authorized staff to redeem, monitor and control comps, redeem loyalty and provide secure access to real time details on guest expenditure. This provides management with the key information to ensure they are maximizing on customer service and retention levels, optimizing guest spend at all times. Using Tevalis technology across the business has enabled Victoria Gate Casino to very quickly gain insight into operational information across all departments, ensuring the business grows from strength to strength as the foundation of our technology partnership strengthens.

Perro Libre Tap Room Tellini Vontobel Arquitetura Perro Libre produce craft beers and have called us to create an innovative design with a system of 10 taps integrated with ipads and card reader. The customer arrives, checks in and credits a value, thereby releasing the chopp taps. The concept we created was to make a cool space, creative and different. The challenge was to design a place for the chopp barrels. We had the idea of showing, inside a super stainless steel freezer, with

glass doors and internal lighting. All furniture, except the internal banquettes, was designed by us. We mix stainless steel with plywood, and black metallic structures. To create a warmth with the right foot, we created a system of metal beams to support the industrial luminaires and focal black spots. The walls are covered with 20x20 white tile from Eliane, so we can integrate the kitchen part with the taps.

In the kitchen area, we use those ancient menus, of plastic letters. The staff of the Perro asked us for a place to sell products (shirts, glasses). So we created a pine frame with glass for the T-shirts and shelves at the bottom of the counter for the other items. In the outdoor area, with deck, we created a furniture, also of pine, in a style of stacked cubes, and we draw loose benches. To give safety, we put a black metal structure leaked on the side to climb creepers. On the front, Texas grass was used.

Sottini

Beauty And Strength – Sottini’s New Ellero Vessel Range Combines Ultra-Thin, High End Design Aesthetics With Extreme Durability Thin Ceramics is an exceptional new range of vessels from bathroom ceramics specialist Sottini. The highend, ultra-thin design of this choice product range was made possible through the creation of an extremely durable ceramic material, Diamatec. Drawing on their two hundred years of ceramic expertise, combined with an unsurpassed quality in craftsmanship, designers at Sottini investigated best practices across the industry. The result of their research and development was a new material, Diamatec, whose exceptional robustness allows designers to achieve the near impossible: Extremely thin, straight edges that are extremely robust and durable—a highly challenging and complex combination.

Diamatec was developed using a unique blend of specially refined materials. Thorough research and development was conducted to reach the ideal combination of finely ground alumina— a versatile ceramic material known for its strength— pre-fired clays, and the perfect blend of sodium and potassium. The result: Unprecedented strength and durability, even in the most thin and precise designs. A new glazing system was developed to complement this innovation, ensuring its tight radius was maintained. Diamatec was born. Products in the Ellero range are especially well suited for demanding environments, such as hotels, where an effective combination of aesthetics and durability is of paramount importance. The design maximises available vessel space resulting in an enhanced user experience. Website: www.sottini.co.uk

The Ellero range of vessels is supplied in three configurations: a vessel without overflow, which maximises internal volume; and for hotel applications both a vessel with overflow, and a deck and vessel with overflow. The overflow in these vessels has been thoughtfully integrated into the design. The result is a discreet, slotted design that does not compromise the clean lines and minimalism of the piece. Previewed at ISH 2017, these stylish vessels will be available in white and five pastel colour tones, inspired by ‘the perfect storm’, a meteorological phenomenon in which warm and cold fronts merge to create beautiful colour tones in greys, blues and dusty pinks. The Ellero vessel range will launch summer 2017.

The Standard Café

The Standard Café Materiality of the 4th Wave Café Jean de Lessard - Designers Créatifs has designed for Westmount’s café The Standard, a space of symmetry where the minimalistic narrative blends in subtly with the sophisticated look of a period café, thus redefining the codes of such a venue where varieties of Grand Cru coffee and gourmet pastries are served.

In this deep ebony shell at the heart of which stark lighting enhances the luster of brass, the interior design firm wanted to shake the prevailing order a bit; the slight displacement of the imposing white quartz worktop, a strong element in the project, thus gives rhythm to this refined place smoothly.

After an intense drawing phase, as a result, the design is focused on the straight line, the balance of proportions and the alignment of the architectural elements with the brass finish wall profiles. These profiles are creating the illusion of wainscoting and the false beams of the ceiling, that of caissons. Such a subterfuge brings a sense of spaciousness and classicism to the small café. Positioning of the custom furniture including the seemingly free-floating pastry showcase is keeping with the notions of horizontality and verticality. There is also similarity in the degree of angularity that both the armrests of the armchairs and the coffee tables present. For an even more stylish effect, a pony hair-like fabric has been mixed with the ever classic herringbone pattern of the fabric on the low-legged armchairs and that of the hickory floor.

A STEAMY PROBLEM SOLVED WITH demista™ Why use a demista heated mirror pad? Over 26 years ago, the innovators of demista™, spotted an obvious gap in the market, and developed the idea for a product that was unknown at that time. After extensive travelling they had noticed that hotels they were staying in had steamed up mirrors after bathing or showering. So the idea of the heated mirror pad came up. These pads can be used behind mirrors on bathroom walls or on bathroom cabinets. They are easy to fit, have no maintenance requirements and cost a minimal amount to run. No more wiping, and smearing the surface. Just a clear view almost instantaneously once the pad is switched on. demista™ heated mirror pads are the first choice of anyone installing or refurbishing a bathroom, whether it be in private homes and apartments, or hotel developments around the world. The pads are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, and multiples can be used for extremely large surfaces. They can also be fitted on bathroom cabinets. OPTIMISE SHARE OF £14BILLION MARKET Under British Standards(1), many hotels are failing in their access provision. Yet making just one bedroom accessible opens a venue’s doors to a greater share of 20% of overnight trips. New and recent Regulations, Parliamentary committee reports and “ best practice” guidelines mean there is greater public awareness on the need to improve access for disabled people and their families, carers. To help understand the core elements, at least regarding toilet provision, Clos-o-Mat has published a white paper: Provision of Accessible Toilets for the Hotel Industry. The white paper provides a simplified reference to achieve compliance for venues where people can stay overnight. It clarifies what is needed under the latest Building Regulations (Approved Document M), plus the Equality Act (which replaced the Disability Discrimination Act) and BS8300:2009, to enable visitors with a visible or invisible disability to access appropriate toilets, both in public areas and in bedrooms. The white paper can be obtained, free of charge, from the downloads section of Clos-o-Mat’s website www.clos-o-mat.com. It is available alongside a raft of support material including CAD blocks, technical specifications, video, renders, and considerations for a trouble-free installation.

Kane World Food Studio

Kane World Food Studio Bogdan Ciocodeic Located in an upcoming neighborhood of the city, the restaurant aims to be a landmark for the regeneration of the old distressed urban tissue. It’s approach is simple and clear, using natural materials and mixing them with the abundant greenery. Both architect and client agreed upon using design as a tool for reaching a particular atmosphere rather than aiming to enhance a certain type of image. The space is designed as an urban oasis, a lush jungle enclosed in a concrete and steel frame. The green, vegetal component of the design comes to complete the concept of the restaurant, that serves a unique, exotic, round the world, fusion cuisine. The plants create a strong outdoor connection, at the same time defining a few private, secluded areas.

The materials used are raw, direct and uncomplicated. Concrete on the floor and the pillars, glazed ceramic tiles for the colored background layer, mirror on the walls and brass details all make up a perfect background for the marble and wooden furniture. All the different areas are the direct result of the functional scheme, a delicate balance between the higher, more strict perimetral sitting area and the middle , softer, more organic, fluid occupancy. The space is treated uniformly with various different focal points, starting with the eight meter long marble bar with a mirror in the background and a light mint ceramic frame and continuing with the delicate exotic wall painting, that balances the fine constructed lines with the strong and abundent theme of the luxurious jungle. For more depth and perspective a mirror has been added next to the painting extending the artwork.

The technical ceiling is apparent, continuing the straightforward, exposed approach of the entire design, painted in a rich, dark, deep green that ties the elements together. The light is soft, and focused on the tables, with a few exceptions that highlight various focal points. The entire atmosphere is constructed to complete the culinary experience and to help immerse into the green, lush urban oasis. The restaurant stretches on a surface of 180 sqm, with 74 seating places and it features, custom made furniture as well as ready to use pieces from brands such as Normann Copenhagen, Bolia, HK Living, Seletti and Hubsch. The open plan space allowed for a layered and sequential perspective, that creates depth and consistence.

Craven Dunnill Jackfield

Craven Dunnill Jackfield Expands Feasibility of Design-Led Ceramic Tile Installations Craven Dunnill Jackfield has an enviable portfolio of successfully completed, bespoke tile projects to its name. These include period restoration work, such as that for The Palace of Westminster and London Underground, plus a growing number of hospitality projects, including The Blues Bar at Shoreditch and Brixton, Newcastle Theatre, St. George’s Hall in Liverpool, and the Crown Bar Liquor Saloon which is a National Trust property. The most recently completed project is the new Barbecoa restaurant, Piccadilly, London. The 285 cover dining area is located on the lower ground floor and features a striking 2.8 metres high by 11 metres long faience tiled wall on either side, created in jewel-green and white tiles, interspersed with thirteen imposing, ornately decorated, tiled columns. Each column is crowned with a 500 x 600mm, intricately moulded fleur-de-lys, likewise made in ceramic. The

final moulds when filled with the liquid casting slip weighed more than 100kgs and required technical trials to successfully fire. The practicality and design scope for featuring ceramics in a hospitality environment is likewise illustrated at the Blues Kitchen, Brixton. Craven Dunnill Jackfield designed and hand-manufactured the flamboyant faience-fronted, ceramic tiled bar for the venue. It stretches 10 metres long and is set off against a back-drop of white and blue brick shaped ceramic tiles and amber dados, which define arched recessed areas. There are five different designs of tile, which clad both the bar and five floor-to-ceiling pillars. Each of the central, large green tiles measure 245x 600mm and are convex, weighing around 10kg each. The deeply textured relief design dates to the late 19th century and features a repeating urn motif; these tiles are bordered by four styles of decorative Website: www.cravendunnill-jackfield.co.uk

blue and amber coloured dado tiles. The same designs are featured on the 2.5m tall pillars, which are capped with deep capital tiles, decorated with an acanthus leaf design. The relief tiles were made using hand carved plaster moulds and decorated with metal oxide glazes, which craze upon firing to create an authentic aged effect. For the large tiles, featuring the urns, each required 200g of glaze to achieve the desired depth of colour. Craven Dunnill Jackfield’s technical knowledge and expertise in the field of bespoke ceramic tiles is unparalleled. Its unique design and manufacturing capabilities, combined with practical project management skills, is significantly expanding the scope for featuring ceramic tiles as part of even the most complex of design-led installations.

Garden Azovskiy&Pahomova Architects The decision about stylistic direction of the gastrobar came to us, when the name and the concept had been confirmed. The customer wanted us to create light and bright space with sophisticated shades. The main goal was to arrange seating places on 49 sq.m. and to embody the concept of the green garden. That’s why we used a lot of ivy pots, which will be complemented by other plants. The main salt is a big amount of daylight, which permeates into the space. Every detail of the design, from the lightning to wall decoration, complements the style of this location. The main material is a floor tile. We really like it. It became a starting point of the design concept. The drawing of the tile gave a pace for whole interior. And it is a beautiful decoration of the restobar Garden.Â

Bespoke Art Wall Coverings Bespoke Art Wall Coverings are changing the way people can experience original art by moving it beyond the limits of the frame and canvas. Gracing the walls of any interior area with the beauty and originality of artwork by Susan Walsh provides a dramatic statement that can change the feel of a space instantly. Walsh is truly an innovator in her exploration of colour and form, creating sensitive and unique images containing surprising depth and detail. This depth is truly apparent when the images become large scale, allowing the viewer to be drawn into the mesmerising energies they contain. Bespoke Art Wall Coverings arose not only from Walsh’s desire to reach a wider audience for her work, but from the idea of wanting clients to become involved in the creative process and build a personal relationship with the images.

On the company website, Walsh “invites you to take a creative journey” where her unique idea of allowing her work to be cropped into, gives us an incredible gift of creating bespoke art for our own enjoyment but also allowing us to immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of the professional artist behind the company. It is important to Walsh that she still spends as much time in her Staffordshire studio as possible, continually developing her techniques to create images that can stir emotional responses and bring a fresh energy to the spaces they occupy. The result is Bespoke Art Wall Covering’s range of wonderful images to choose from, with new images constantly becoming available as original paintings, canvas prints or wall coverings in paper or vinyl. It is Walsh’s unique painting style that makes it possible to choose either the whole image or a selected area,

providing a multitude of options from just one painting. The likelihood of the exact same image being reproduced by different designers, therefore, becomes increasingly rare. Researching reliable methods of production has been a key aspect in developing the company, so whilst Bespoke Art Wall Coverings may be relatively new to the market, Walsh has been working hard for some time to ensure that the quality of the product reflects the emotion and skill she imbues in each image. A recent public launch at a large trade fair in the UK showed an encouraging amount of interest from interior designers and Bespoke Art Wall Coverings are set to make a real impact on an exciting new market.

Bright Goods

the World Of Hospitality

Bright Goods LED Filament Lamps Illuminate Fuller’s Pubs LED Eco Lights today announced that Bright Goods LED filament lamps are being installed throughout the Fuller’s managed pub estate to reduce energy and maintenance costs. The project has been designed, managed and delivered by the Light Corporation. Bright Goods LED filament lamps from LED Eco Lights were first installed in The Sail Loft, a newly built Fuller’s pub in Greenwich, in a lighting scheme created by the Light Corporation. The Sail Loft is part of the new Greenwich Reach development, with floor-toceiling glass windows on three sides and a large terrace facing the Thames with views of Canary Wharf, Cutty Sark and the O2 Arena. Its interior takes inspiration from its location, and features nautical touches and maritime bric-a-brac adorning the walls. Tim Henderson, Director of The Light Corporation, said. “We gave the lighting a nautical spin, locating the Bright Goods lamps within basket-style lampshades for example. Bright Goods LED filament lamps are

in a class of their own for this kind of setting, offering energy efficient LED technology in a warm, retro style that perfectly suited the ambiance of the pub. The Sail Loft is a large open plan site able to seat 300 people – yet the lighting makes it feel intimate especially in the evening.” Fuller’s was impressed with both the appearance of the lights and the energy efficiencies achieved, and contracted The Light Corporation to survey a substantial part of its managed estate of just under 200 pubs, and recommend low energy Bright Goods LED replacements for each light on the premises. Bright Goods LED lamps are also being fitted into existing Fuller’s pubs as they are refurbished and to other new pubs as they are built. Pubs completed include The Tea Merchant, Canary Wharf; The Pilot, Chiswick; The Queen’s Head, Hammersmith; The Hydrant, Monument; The Pilgrim Inn, Southampton; The White Hart Hotel, Hampton and The William Walker, Winchester.

Commenting, Peter Turner, Property Director at Fuller’s said: “We were very impressed with the appearance of Bright Goods LED lights. They provide illumination that is as warm and welcoming as a filament bulb, maintaining the all-important ambience of the pub in the evening. It is also highly controllable, and can be dimmed as required. It allows us to maintain a traditional feel while reducing our carbon footprint.” Saima Shafi, Sales and Marketing Director of LED Eco Lights added, “Bright Goods LED lamps can in many cases be slotted directly into a fitting to replace the existing filament, fluorescent or halogen lamp, reducing the replacement cost and enhancing the return on investment. In some cases, the energy saving can be as much as 75% - reducing carbon emissions by over 40 tonnes per year.”

The Forks Market Food Hall

Number TEN Architectural Group The Forks Market Food Hall breathes new life in to one of Winnipeg’s most important and beloved public spaces. The market acts as the city’s living room, a place for people to gather and relax with their friends and loved ones. The design aims to re-define the aging interior as a modern food hall and event space. While developing the design, it was important to support both the evolving functions of the public space and the site’s rich history. For hundreds of years The Forks has been a place for both gathering and trade. From the late nineteenth century onward the site was used as a rail yard. The two brick structures that today form the market were once machine shops for freight car and coach repair, and later stables for the rail companies. An atrium space was constructed in the late 1980s linking the two historic structures to create The Forks Market building, establishing a shopping and dining destination.

The Forks’ industrial past inspired the direction of the interior design. Raw steel, hand forged blacksmith work and natural wood detailing are all used to reinforce the character of the historic architecture. An exposed steel structure stretching over the craft beer and wine kiosk, composed of exposed c-channels and bent i-beams, was inspired by the architectural language of Canada’s rail history. Its hand forged steel detailing by a local blacksmith references a traditional industrial art. The existing teal structure was painted dark grey and new lighting was added to enhance the character and material of the original stable buildings. Former horse stalls, which act as food kiosks are outfitted with new tile and steel front counters, consistent signage, and a flexible assortment of equipment to accommodate a variety of food and beverage vendors. New tables with steel bases and swinging circular seats reflect factory plant benches, further

relating to The Forks as a place of turn of the century industry. The design aims to enhance the sense of community in The Forks Market’s central court. Smaller wood tables with hinged drop leaves can transform in to an 80-person harvest table, allowing for large communal gatherings. Arched structures with counter seating and upholstered banquettes define the edge of the hall, creating more intimate seating areas within the larger volume of the space. Suspended above, large metal drum pendants with glowing LED Edison bulbs contribute visual warmth and further define The Forks has acted as a space for gathering and commerce throughout its rich history. Our hope is that the refreshed food hall will breathe new energy into the space, helping this tradition to continue long in to the future.
