Art-Led Digital Displays Transforming Guest Experience in Hospitality - VI EUNI TE As hotels continue to refine how they communicate with guests, many are turning to digital solutions that elevate ambience as much as they improve operational efficiency. As Los Angeles prepares for an overall unprecedented influx of global travel in the coming year and beyond, the hotel’s updated design and proximity to both the airport and major venues will position it as a premier destination for international travelers, business travelers, families, sports fans, concertgoers, and media.

Guest accommodations will be fully refreshed, with all two-double-bed rooms converted to two-queenbed configurations. The refreshed design combines modern minimalism with mid-century influences, emphasizing clean lines, neutral tones, and natural textures. Queen room types will feature warm orange accents for a vibrant touch, while king rooms will incorporate deep teal tones for a refined, calming atmosphere. Each room will include contemporary furnishings, redesigned bathrooms with a standing shower or shower/tub combination, new mattresses, mini-refrigerators, enhanced lighting, and upgraded connectivity with USB and USB-C charging outlets.

Accessible rooms will also feature automated curtain controls and other ADA-compliant enhancements.

For more than a decade, our industry has been shaped by consolidation. Big brands, big data and even bigger operating systems have dominated the landscape. But the momentum is shifting, and quickly. Across the UK, independent hotels, especially those rooted in rural settings like ours, are outperforming their corporate counterparts in guest loyalty, spend and sentiment.

From where I stand, the reason is simple: guests aren’t looking for perfection anymore. They’re looking for presence. They want places that feel alive, not engineered. And independents are uniquely placed to offer that.

Walk into a global chain, and the experience is reliably consistent. But consistency has tipped into homogeneity. I’ve lost count of the number of hotels where the lobby, the coffee and even the lighting feel identical, no matter the country or context.

People are actively seeking individuality and authenticity - a change I’ve also experienced along the way, during my work with some of the world’s most iconic luxury destinations.

The data backs this up: design-led, independent hotels have grown their market share over the last three years, despite inflationary pressures and rising operating costs. The differentiator isn’t scale. It’s soul.

Guests can feel the people behind an independent hotel. They can sense the authorship.

At The Highfield, this ethos guides every decision we make. One of the biggest shifts I’ve observed is the rise of what I call humanised design: an approach that prioritises emotional comfort over corporate polish. For us, that means using materials that age naturally, designing lighting that diffuses rather than dazzles, and shaping landscapes that guide the guest experience just as meaningfully as any menu or amenity.

The next phase is integrated sustainability: buildings that heat efficiently, landscapes that regenerate, local supply chains that prioritise provenance, and operations that genuinely reduce waste.

True sustainability is something guests feel, not something they’re told to feel.

We’re designing for the nervous system as much as for the eye. People want softness, warmth, atmosphere… spaces that help them exhale. And this aligns with a far bigger cultural change: the mainstreaming of wellness.

The wider forces shaping our industry - climate pressures, wellness culture, design evolution and a backlash against algorithmic standardisation - are pushing hospitality into a new era. And this is where independents have a structural advantage. We can adapt at speed. We can respond overnight to a seasonal ingredient, collaborate with a local maker, or adjust our spaces to reflect cultural shifts. I don’t need a sign-off from a brand guardian in another country to redesign a room or rethink an experience.

Guests aren’t just looking for a change of scenery; they’re looking for renewal. This is where rural hospitality has a genuine advantage. Natural England’s research shows that 87% of people * say time in the countryside improves their wellbeing. The health benefits of outdoor exercise alone are valued at £8.4 billion annually.**

This agility shows up in the guest journey too: hyperlocal menus, personalised touches, evolving interiors, and spaces that feel authored rather than mandated.

Hospitality is, at its core, a human business. The places that lead with humanity will be the ones that thrive.

The countryside gives us a head start. Fresh air, natural light, big skies and the psychology of open space are assets that no hotel brand can fabricate. Independent rural hotels are using this advantage to create stays centred on recalibration rather than escape: dawn meadow walks, nature-based programming, repurposed heritage buildings, wildflower meadows and kitchen gardens. These experiences aren’t trends for us; they’re the foundations of how our guests want to live while they’re with us.

If the last era of hospitality was defined by scale, the next will be defined by intimacy. Luxury is becoming quieter, more emotional, more connected to place and story. People want to feel known. They want to step into a space with a heartbeat.

The future of hospitality won’t belong to the biggest brands. It will belong to the most human spaces.

Sustainability, too, has moved into a new phase.

“Eco-luxury” has become so widespread that it’s now part of the baseline: reclaimed timbers, organic cotton bedding, refillable products. All positive steps, but I think we’re entering a moment of reckoning.

Guests are increasingly able to distinguish between meaningful sustainability and what I’d call ecotheatre.

And in that future, independents will be the benchmark rather than the alternative.

Brewin Design Office Unveils Design for Its First Hotel in Japan: Capella Kyoto - BR E WI N D ESI GN A Contemporary Machiya Shaped by Craft, Culture, and the Poetry of Space

and unexpected. The site’s past is not erased; rather it is reinterpreted. Incorporating reclaimed timber and select artefacts from the former school grounds, the hotel retains a connection to its history, offering an authenticity and sense of continuity unique within Kyoto’s luxury landscape.

Singapore-based Brewin Design Office has crafted the interior design of Capella Kyoto, opening in Spring 2026 in the city’s historic Gion district. Working alongside architects Kengo Kuma and Associates, the design draws on Kyoto’s cultural heritage and Brewin’s contemporary approach to luxury to establish a clear interplay of craft, materiality, and atmosphere. The property presents a modern-day machiya, reflecting the city’s architectural sensibilities through a sequence of considered spaces, expressed alongside a quiet composition of light, texture, and refined detailing.

A Choreographed Arrival Guests enter through a narrow Gion-style passageway lined with shoji screens that soften the sound of a hidden waterfall. The approach is intentionally prolonged — unfolding through a series of gentle intervals that naturally slow one’s pace and heighten awareness of the surroundings. This calibrated progression echoes the neighbourhood’s pattern of discovery, where movement through slender alleyways gives way to moments of quiet reveal.

This journey carries a gentle sense of anticipation, culminating in a modern airlock framing a sculptural reimagination of the shimenawa, a sacred rope marking the transition from the everyday and the contemplative.

Capella Kyoto is located in Miyagawa-cho and is built on the grounds of a former elementary school. Steps from Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple, Kenninji, and the historic Kaburenjo Theatre, the property draws on the neighbourhood’s deep cultural lineage, embodying a spirit of learning and artistry, articulated through a contemporary Kyoto vernacular that is both familiar

Beyond this threshold, the hotel opens into a cloistered tsuboniwa courtyard garden, which is the heart of the property. The courtyard integrates a meditative water feature and an open-air performance platform, establishing a spatial calm that guides the entire project and echoes Kyoto’s reverence for nature as architecture’s equal.

A Curated Dialogue of Art and Architecture Capella Kyoto is the result of a collaboration between Brewin Design Office, Capella Hotel Group, and Kengo Kuma & Associates – a collaboration that brings together architecture, interiors, and hospitality through a shared belief in quiet luxury and cultural continuity.

Craft as a Structure Kyoto’s craftsmanship forms the backbone of the interior design. Rather than using traditional materials as decorative accents, Brewin Design Office employs them as architectural building blocks. Hand-applied earthen plaster walls, carved timber joinery influenced by chõba tansu merchant chests, and authentic shoji panels composed with precision and restraint.

Lacquer, bronze, ceramic and handmade washi paper appear throughout, their tactility creating a rhythm of surfaces that reward close observation.

While Kengo Kuma & Associates led the architectural design, Brewin Design Office shaped the interior narrative, from guestrooms and suites to restaurants and the spa, translating the architectural rhythm into a layered, sensory experience that unites proportion, texture, and light.

“Kyoto’s mastery lies in its restraint,” says Robert Cheng, Founder of Brewin Design Office. “Our ambition was to express its invisible qualities – stillness, rhythm, material intelligence – through the language of design rather than decoration.”

“Rather than replicating tradition, we sought to evolve its essence through a contemporary lens,” Cheng explains. “It’s about carrying forward Kyoto’s spirit of discretion and intimacy, not merely referencing its past.”

Guestrooms as Private Retreats

Capella Kyoto’s interiors extend beyond spatial design into a curated dialogue between art and architecture. The hotel houses a permanent art collection featuring contemporary Japanese artists, curated by the property’s full-time Art Curator. This ongoing narrative of renewal is reinforced by the Artist-in-Residence programme, where traditional artisans and modern creatives intersect in the hotel’s public and private spaces.

Guestrooms and suites act as private sanctuaries, centering the Japanese ritual of bathing. Deep stone tubs anchor each room, framed by muted surfaces and tactile finishes that invite slowness and contemplation.

The design prioritises sensory quiet — a distilled interpretation of Kyoto’s aesthetic of simplicity.

This new retail area, located beside the original shop, was conceived to complement the historic space and respond to the ever-growing number of visitors who travel from around the world to experience this national treasure. Designed by Gracinha Viterbo, the project reflects her signature balance between timeless elegance and modern sensibility, while honoring the brand’s deep heritage and identity.

The new interior evokes the artisanal essence of Portuguese tradition, while introducing a contemporary architectural language that feels both familiar and refreshing. Light oak woods, handmade tiles, and textured lime plaster walls were combined to create a space that feels warm, authentic, and timeless. The lighting concept was carefully developed

The forthcoming redesign aims to preserve the charm and authenticity of the original shop while enhancing its functionality, flow, and aesthetic coherence with the new retail space.

The layout was meticulously planned to optimize flow, ensuring visitors can enjoy a smoother experience as they purchase their pastries or coffee while remaining connected to the charm of the original space. The design creates a dialogue between eras — a conversation between the heritage of the past and the creativity of the present.

Rockwell Group Unveils Redesign of W New York – Union Square - ROCK WELL GROUP 25 years on, the studio returns to reimagine the landmark hotel and introduce the next chapter of the W Hotels brand

Living Room Rockwell Group, the award-winning architecture and design practice, has revealed the transformation of W New York – Union Square, celebrating both the 25-year anniversary of the hotel’s opening and the launch of the brand’s new global design direction.

Originally launched in 2000 and located within the historic Beaux-Arts Guardian Life Building, W New York – Union Square is a symbol of modern hospitality in New York. Its distinctive four-storey mansard roof links the building to the elegance of French Second Empire and late-19th-century Parisian architecture.

For Rockwell Group, the project signifies a homecoming. The studio designed the first W Hotel on Lexington Avenue in 1998, followed by W New

York – Union Square two years later, just steps from its own offices. Now, a quarter of a century on, Rockwell Group has returned to fully reimagine the property as the flagship for a multi-year global rebrand of W Hotels commissioned by Marriott International.

Lobby “W New York – Union Square was a milestone in our history when we first designed it 25 years ago,” says David Rockwell, Founder and President of Rockwell Group. “Revisiting the property today has allowed us to create a design that reflects both the brand’s evolution and the vibrancy of the Union Square neighbourhood. It’s about honouring the past whilst introducing an experience that feels fresh, dynamic, and attuned to a new generation of guests.”

Living Room

Union Square Park, the cultural and social centre of the neighbourhood, inspires the redesign. It is a tale of contrasts – geometric landmarks and contemporary art, historic mansard roofs, and lively farmers’ markets all inform a material and colour palette that changes with the seasons. As guests cross the threshold into the hotel, the arrival area serves as a smooth transition from street to hotel. The energy and bustle of urban life is reflected in the contrasting black and white of the houndstooth fabric banquette, veined marble floors, and a commissioned mural by artist Shantell Martin, whose empowerment-focused pieces make an entryway impact.

A showstopping, asymmetrical, curved feature staircase with polished metal contours features a bespoke rug that appears to flow down the stairs like swirls of paint. Inspired by the Faig Ahmed artwork “Doubts,” the rug uses an abstraction of the hotel’s collective colours, swirling into a larger pool at the check-in area, where it catches the eye; drawing people to the second floor.

At the heart of the hotel is the Living Room. Originally a ballroom, the double-height space has been energised with a palette of blue and orange. Marble

columns and ornate ceilings are preserved, while a resin bar embedded with botanicals and a dramatic double-height back bar adds subtle Art Deco flair.

A set of doors in the Living Room opens to the The Living Room Café, a lounge and casual workspace defined by a sophisticated, monochromatic palette of greens that bring the foliage and seasonality of the park inside. The space offers Devoción coffee by day and cocktails by night.

In guestrooms and suites, the colour palette shifts from autumnal warmth to spring freshness, expressed through botanical carpets, ombré wall coverings, and lacquered finishes. Each room is divided into zones for work and leisure, anchored by a bold checkerboard minibar. How Contract Furniture Group Helped Redefine a Classic Venue

Marble quartz tabletops, alongside Zeus and Atlas table bases with gold finishes, enhanced the opulence, while casual dining areas incorporated durable laminate tops with Aldeburgh Table Bases.

Moving from Business to Pleasure Located near Windsor, The Runnymede on Thames Hotel and Spa is known for its classic style and picturesque riverside views. In late 2023, Warner Leisure Hotels acquired the site, aiming to transform it from a business-focused venue into a countryside retreat. The multi-million-pound refurbishment began in early 2024 and was completed by late September.

Style with Sustainability A key service was the Refresh, Rejuvenate, Refurbish offering. Many existing furniture pieces were reupholstered and refinished, extending their lifespan.

Fixed seating in the Market Kitchen was refreshed to match the new design. Additionally, custom joinery, including lobby desks with marble tops and wall cladding for the Holiday Hub, added a refined touch.

A Study in Form and Function The ambitious transformation included updates to 250 rooms, restaurants, and entertainment spaces.

Having previously worked with Warner Leisure Hotels on projects like Heythrop Hall, Contract Furniture Group was initially tasked with refurbishing the bedrooms, including 25 new rooms. However, after delivering an exceptional sample room, the firm expanded its role to include public areas such as Market Kitchen, Brasserie32, and the Live Lounge.

A Grand Reopening The Runnymede Hotel’s reopening in September was a resounding success. Now a stylish adult-only retreat, the transformed venue has received glowing feedback.

The collaboration between Warner Leisure Hotels, Virserius Studio, and Contract Furniture Group has created a standout destination, seamlessly blending style, comfort, and functionality.

breathing new life into a Kraków landmark. Partnering with INTEX GROUP SPZ OO, VIYAR FURNITURE restored and furnished five floors of the historic hotel, transforming it into a modern hospitality space with 30 fully equipped apartments.

This residential complex project in central London showcases our capability to deliver comprehensive, high-spec furniture solutions in one of the world’s most demanding markets. The building comprises 37 apartments, each with its own unique layout and aesthetic requirements.

Each apartment includes a kitchen, bedroom, and ample storage, designed to offer guests the warmth of home combined with the sophistication of a boutique hotel. Natural colour palettes, ergonomic layouts, and soft lighting create a welcoming atmosphere, while materials were chosen for their strength and resilience – essential in high-traffic environments.

Partnering with MIB Construction LTD, VIYAR FURNITURE handled the full process – from developing furniture concepts and selecting materials to production and coordination of installation.

The project’s interior aesthetic blends timeless charm with contemporary design. We used a mix of materials such as chipboard, metal, and stone, each carefully selected for its texture, tone, and durability. The result is a space that feels both modern and enduring – a reflection of VIYAR FURNITURE’s philosophy that great design should stand the test of time.

Project Spotlight: The NinetyThird by Qatar Airways - o2 Arena After five years of meticulous planning and overcoming pandemic challenges, the latest commercial project by Chaplins Trade - the ‘NinetyThird by Qatar Airways’ Lounge at The O2 is finally live.

Tasked with curating a luxurious furniture and fabric collection that complements each room’s unique aesthetic while supporting large-scale events, the Chaplins team, led by Darren Smith, successfully delivered a space offering the “ best seat in the house.”

The project, initiated by AEG Europe and designed by Platform Group, sought a consultative furniture supplier to bring the project to life, while meeting durability and fire regulations. Despite the complexity, Darren and those at Chaplins Trade embraced the challenge, collaborating seamlessly with numerous brands. Where Folklore Breathes Through the Walls: Inside Ardbeg House on Islay - A B ERG H OUSE In the village of Port Ellen on the Isle of Islay, where legends drift through the air like peat smoke, something extraordinary has emerged. A kaleidoscopic fantasia of local folklore and whisky culture, Ardbeg House is Russell Sage’s latest offering in Scottish hospitality design.

Fromental, the renowned London-based atelier celebrated for its hand-painted wallcoverings, is delighted to highlight its central role in the design of Ardbeg House. Created in collaboration with Russell Sage Studio, the hotel’s 12 suites and bedrooms are rich in storytelling, folklore, and craftsmanship, with over 24 bespoke Fromental wallcoverings at their heart.

A close friend and collaborator of Fromental’s, the company has long admired Russell’s ability to capture the essence of place in every detail. Previous joint projects for Glenmorangie House saw wildlifeinspired wallcoverings climb from walls to ceilings,

enveloping guests in the Highland landscape. For The Goring, an array of exotic animals offered tongue in cheek references to founding family members. This time, Russell challenged Fromental’s artists to capture something more elusive - the myths, landscape and elemental forces of Islay across 15 spaces.

Russell Sage’s interiors are at once exuberant, eccentric and occasionally surreal. His vision for “luxury with a laugh” at Ardbeg House gave Fromental’s team licence to push boundaries, layering metaphor with sensory details that made the walls themselves essential to the story.

Highlights: Standout Suites The Feis Suite Taking its name from the Gaelic word for festival, the Feis suite features a bespoke rendition of the Ponti wallcovering in Appogia. Multicoloured panels of hand-painted Travertine - a carnivalesque medley of reds, blues, greens, and oranges - splice together in jubilant celebration. The en-suite features a fully custom design that evokes tempestuous Hebridean skies, achieved through digital manipulation of Fromental’s unique saltwood technique. Here, salt draws paint into evocative shapes and textures, printed on metallic silver voile.

The Rebel Suite Crashing around the walls of the Rebel Suite like storm-driven waves, this custom Fromental design originated from an archival tapestry. Replicated through hand-painting and dramatically scaled up, it was printed on gilded paper, creating an abstract interpretation of turbulent waters beating against Islay’s rugged shores.

The Monsters and Beasties Suites Paying tribute to the land and its legends, Russell drew inspiration from the skins of legendary creatures.

The Monster Suite features an original mosaic design adapted as a textured effect on gilded paper, evoking crocodile skin - a playful wink to the island’s more fantastical lore. In the Wee Beastie Suite, referencing Robert Burns’ poem “To a Mouse,” a textured snakeskin pattern was scaled up dramatically by 200% and finished with a high-gloss treatment.

The Legend Suite The Legend Suite’s Rockpool wallcovering, initially hand-painted by co-founder, Lizzie Deshayes, pays tribute to the island’s intimate relationship with the sea and the ever-changing moods of coastal waters.

Flowing into the bathroom, an inverted iteration of the Willow wallcovering design evokes swaying sea grass, immersing guests in an underwater reverie.

Where contemporary luxury hotels often whisper in hushed tones, Ardbeg House sings - of Russell’s daring vision, of patient craftsmanship and of Islay’s distinctive character. Salt crystals become storm clouds, mosaic fragments become monster skin, and tapestry archives become crashing waves.

The result transports guests to another world entirely – one where folklore breathes through the walls and every surface holds a story. In embracing the riotous, the unexpected, the smile-inducing, Ardbeg House proves that luxury needn’t take itself too seriously to take your breath away.

The growing fire safety industry body Fire Aware has a number of specialist members who also act as technical guidance experts for members who need help around the new challenges of legislation.
