Pizza Hut Restaurants calls on industry to protect employee mental wellbeing Research commissioned as part of Pizza Hut Restaurants’ new partnership with Mental Health UK reveals that only 7% of hospitality workers would feel comfortable talking to their employer about their mental health. Additionally, 44% said they wouldn’t talk to anyone at all, not even family or friends. Encouragingly, four out of five people who did ask for support from their employer said that they received it. However, the research revealed there is still a stigma attached to mental health problems and over half (56%) said they received adverse treatment at work as a result. This suggests that more needs to be done to ensure employees experiencing problems with their mental health feel comfortable speaking to their employer. Pizza Hut Restaurants is committed to taking a leading role when it comes to mental health problems in the hospitality industry, encouraging other businesses to support their own staff, and thereby helping to attract and retain more people in the sector.

Founded five years ago, by entrepreneur David Abrahamovitch and musician Kaz James, Shoreditch Grind was designed to bring the ultra high-quality coffee experience of Kaz’s hometown, Melbourne, to East London. Since then, Grind has grown to six locations across London that serve coffee, cocktails and food from day to night. When Grind launched its crowdfunding campaign in summer 2015, they promised to build a state of the art coffee roastery to supply coffee to their locations around London. After storming through their £750k target to raise a total of £1.3m, one year later Grind has now delivered on that promise, with a state of the art roastery in an incredible converted warehouse –alongside a barista training lab and space for the growing Grind team. Remarkably, the building has a long history with coffee – it was originally built for coffee storagein 1895. The new Grind HQ is in the heart of Shoreditch, a few minutes walk from the original Shoreditch Grind locationon Old Street Roundabout. Grind open their very own roastery this September 5 From here, new Head Roaster Howard works with Grind Head of Coffee Sam to taste, select, and roast the coffee before it’s packed and shipped around London, twice a week. Afternoon Tea Re-Examined At Claridge’s Famous for this most English of institutions for almost 150 years, Claridge’s elevates the ritual of afternoon tea to a new level with an unprecedented amount of detail and gastronomic attention. The unrivalled experience features a menu of over twenty carefully sourced teas, expertly complemented by delicious finger sandwiches, warm scones and sweet pastries. The centrepiece of the afternoon tea is, of course, the drink itself. Tea connoisseur, Henrietta Lovell of the Rare Tea Company has scoured the globe to find a selection of exquisite tea from small, little known producers, which all use sustainable farming practices. Working hand in hand with Claridge’s Executive Chef,

Martyn Nail, Lovell has painstakingly selected teas that will complement the food on offer. The skilfully curated selection has been sourced from some of the oldest tea plantations in China, Sri Lanka, Africa, India and even the UK. The teas are all natural containing no additives, preservatives or flavourings. Lovell has also developed a delicious Claridge’s Blend, which is re-blended every season, much like a fine wine. Among the highlights of the menu are a White Silver Tip from the mountains of Fujian in far eastern China and one of the most prized teas in the world; the rare Malawi Antler which is made from the shoots of the

tea plant and cannot be found anywhere else in the UK, and an Earl Grey from Tregothnan, a walled tea garden in Cornwall that has been producing beautiful teas since the 14th century. Following special training all Claridge’s waiters are adept at the correct way to prepare the perfect cup of tea. The exact amount of tea is weighed before being brought to the table along with water at the optimum temperature, which is used to steep the tea to the guest’s preferred strength. Once served, the remaining water is drained off the leaves ready for a second infusion – which experts regard as being even better than the first.

Commenting on the collaboration, Lovell says: “It’s so wonderful to be working with somewhere that is synonymous with this culinary tradition and so exciting to know that Claridge’s serves it with a unique focus on the tea itself.” Executive chef, Martyn Nail, comments: “Building on Claridge’s afternoon tea heritage, we’re pleased to be once again setting the standards and raising the bar of this quintessentially British institution with an amount of detail and gastronomic attention, thus far unheard of in hotels.”

Tea is accompanied by a delicious selection of finger sandwiches and chic pastries. The pastries which change every week according to the availability of the very finest seasonal ingredients and are made fresh each day by a dedicated team of pastry chefs headed by Ross Sneddon and are complemented by freshly baked plain and raisin scones. The latter are served with Marco-Polo jelly – the popular tea-infused jam and traditional Cornish, clotted cream. Humbert & Poyet Unveils The Beef bar In Hong Kong Following in the footsteps of Monaco and Mexico, Beefbar is continuing to conquer the world and this time it’s set its sights on the very heart of the Chinese metropolis that is Hong Kong. The signature concept from the Monaco Restaurant Group serves top quality meat that has brought the restaurant world renown and put it among the best meat restaurants in the world in specialist press. The Humbert & Poyet architecture firm has unveiled an interior inspired by gentlemen’s and wine tasting clubs with premium features in the new site. The materials are opulent, raw and luxurious: black wood panels, leather fittings, burnished bronze and a marble bar. The lighting is designed and custom-made by the architecture firm to create an intimate and cosy atmosphere. The openwork ceiling made up of dyed wood panels alternates with gaps to create depth and a bold design feature. The new restaurant’s unique feature is a scarlet wall that marks out a private and social space. Nuances of warm colours combined with refined raw features

craft a masculine, chic and modern setting. A world away from hectic Hong Kong, the cosy bar and terrace heighten the sense of timeless luxury and the peaceful atmosphere designed by the architects Emil Humbert & Christophe Poyet. Each design feature created by Emil Humbert & Christophe Poyet echoes Beefbar’s culinary world: excellent, bold and pure. With over 20 years of experience as a chef, Andrea Spagoni puts these values into his dishes to create a unique culinary experience. This new project has seen the Humbert & Poyet architecture firm once again amaze and reach an international audience with a new address that’s already a must-visit!

Paris, the former as a state-qualified architect (ParisBelleville National School of Architecture graduate) and the latter as a CFAI interior designer (Académie Charpentier graduate). It all began in 2007 when Emil Humbert, from Paris, opened his architecture firm and Christophe Poyet, from Monaco, had just graduated. Humbert & Poyet was founded a year after they first met: “It was natural, I instantly knew we’d work together,” says Emil Humbert. Their projects focus on elegant and meticulous designs to create timeless spaces using premium materials such as stone, wood and bronze. Naturally, the most important thing is to reflect the client’s personality and respect the soul of the site.

LOW-KEY LUXURY ARCHITECTURE Two architects, Emil Humbert and Christophe Poyet, joined forces to form Humbert & Poyet. The design and fashion enthusiasts decided to pool their skills to provide a full range of services from construction to interior design. They both studied in Website:

Humbert & Poyet put their stamp on public work sites with their expert choice of materials, lighting design or their ability to showcase a space and set the scene for the client to take centre stage. “We communicate constantly throughout a project. Our symbiosis forms the foundations of our projects and ensures the space that we’ve imagined works,” says Christophe Poyet.

Ibis Styles & Pullman hotels in Roissypôle Paris, France In Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle, the Roissypôle business district offers more than 230,000 m² of offices and 2,200 hotel rooms available by the end of 2014. As air traffic keeps growing and the construction of a fourth terminal was planned, Roissypôle’s development is in full swing. Winner of a March 2011 competition hosted by the Paris Airports, on a 4,102 m² space, Arte Charpentier Architectes has designed two distinct hotels for the ACCOR group: a building housing an

IBIS STYLES (308 rooms) hotel on the corner of the Lisbon and New York streets and a building for the prestigious PULLMAN (305 rooms) chain implanted along the la Haye street - that has also been designed according to its angle with the New York street. The hotel project was designed to seamlessly integrate within its nearby environment, in articulation with the “Dome” and the future nearby tramway terminal. Right in front of the train exit, the two IBIS STYLES and PULLMAN hotels share the same kind of outline

and their frame are innovative. Despite its thin silhouette and irregular facade in front of the Dome, the hotel center creates a strong visual impact, making those buildings appear as doors to the city. The gap between the hotels creates a convivial space that is partially protected by a glassing in the form of flower petals; a true catalyst for city life, a place to drink, to share moments or just go through. The street level is lively. The activities offered generate commercial activity. The two hotels’ reception areas

city and its passersby. The two buildings’ facades have been treated in the same way: - The color and materials have been picked for their brightness - Silk-screened glass partially covers the glassing, drawing an aesthetic and modern checker board pattern. An optical illusion is thus created along the buildings’ frames. - Thousands of LEDs create lines along the facades; they light the buildings up day and night. The Fine bedding company

Luxury and Ethically Sourced Bedding To Launch at The Independent Hotel Show 2016 Nimbus Emporium will be launching its new natural range of ethically soured bedding at the Independent Hotel Show in London in October 2016 and The Fine Bedding Company Hotel Division will be showcasing its complete range of high quality and luxurious synthetic bedding, also on stand 221. Responding to the increasing demand for luxury natural bedding in the exclusive hotel sector, the new Nimbus Emporium collection, which includes pillows, duvets, mattress protectors and mattress toppers, sets new standards in all-natural quality bedding. It is also one of the first brands in the UK to carry the prestigious Downpass Seal which certifies that products are responsibly and ethically sourced, have incurred no live plucking, are fully traceable and by-products of the food industry, much like leather and wool. The Gold collection is unsurpassed in quality and uses 100% A1 certified Hungarian Goose Down – universally acknowledged as one of the best fillings in the world. Encased in a luxurious 420 thread count pure cotton cover, it is flawlessly hand-finished in champagne piping.

Soft and luxurious, the Silver collection contains a 90% Hungarian goose down filling that surpasses most of what is currently available on the market in quality. A 300 thread count cotton cover completes the sumptuous experience, with beautiful hand-finished silver piped edges. The Bronze collection has a 90% premium Goose down filling encased in an exquisite 280 thread count cotton cambric, hand finished with beautiful piping. The Fine Bedding Company Hotel Division’s synthetic bedding is still hugely popular. It is easier to keep bedding squeaky clean for each and every guest while also being more cost-effective to manage. Daniel Fido, The Fine Bedding Company Hotel Division, said: “We know how important cleanliness is for hotel guests so it’s important that bedding withstands the test of repeated washing at high temperatures, which can reduce the life cycle of bedding, making it less cost-effective over time. The results from a recent independent test gave us peace of mind that we are exceeding the industry standard and the needs of customers.”

Tel: 0161 864 5632

The washability test used an independent lab to test its hotel bedding range against the industry’s leading competitors, the range of duvets, pillows, mattress protectors and mattress enhancers outperformed competitors when washed at 60° and dried over 20 washes. Duvets and pillows were tested for cleanliness, ability to reform and revive their shape. The test also offered reassurance of the durability of our products and that this is more than feasible with what we currently offer. Featuring Smartfil®, a unique next generation fibre technology that offers superior thermal performance and maximum air flow, the Fine Bedding Company Hotel Division synthetic range ensures guests keep warm and comfortable as they sleep. The bedding is practical, functional and hypo allergenic. Products are also ultra-light for faster room turnover and quick drying so freshly laundered duvets can be returned to a bed within a matter of hours.

million people annually, expected to rise to 15 million by 2017, and is one of the most popular destinations in the city.

Hakkasan Group, the global hospitality company, today announced plans to open its Ling Ling restaurant in Oslo, Norway in April 2017 in partnership with Fursetgruppen Restaurant Group and Norwegian Property. With significant investment in the site it demonstrates a continuation of Hakkasan Group’s business strategy of taking its brand portfolio into new high-growth markets across the world.

Ling Ling Oslo will launch in the newly renovated Aker Brygge Marina on the Oslo Fjord waterfront and will feature indoor dining as well as a stunning bar and rooftop terrace. Aker Brygge is visited by 12

Luxury Hotels Group

Luxury Hotels Group welcomes one of Spain’s most distinctive five star stays (London, June 2015) Luxury Hotels Group is delighted to announce the latest addition to its growing portfolio. In the heart of Bilbao, one of Spain’s most exciting cities, Hotel Carlton is a five star hotel with a story to tell. Bilbao is synonymous with the iconic Guggenheim Museum thanks to world- renowned architect Frank Gehry, but the Hotel Carlton was an icon long before this modernist masterpiece. With an imposing beaux arts façade and equally alluring interiors, it’s seen everyone from Albert Einstein to Ava Gardner stay in its rooms and suites since it opened in 1926, and was the base of the Basque government during the Spanish Civil War. The first hotel in Spain to boast en suite bathrooms, the Carlton’s high ceilings, marble floors, plush fabrics and natural silk duvets exude elegance, complemented by

bold contemporary styling. Rooms and suites combine a real sense of history with every modern comfort, making the hotel ideal for discerning travellers looking for an authentic, upscale experience. The unique appeal also extends to twelve versatile event spaces, ranging from the sweeping Azul room for up to 200 theatre-style to the atmospheric La Cristalera – an elliptical hall illuminated by a stunning stained glass dome – a memorable setting for cocktail receptions, press conferences or product presentations. The Salón Aránzazu, which harboured the government during Civil War bombardments, now hosts smaller meetings and intimate private dining experiences. The Basque Country is renowned as one of Europe’s new culinary hotspots, and appropriately enough the hotel’s restaurant reinterprets traditional Basque cuisine with flair, while Bar Americano serves legendary cocktails. With world-class art at the Website:

Guggenheim minutes away – and the beautiful Basque coastline a metro ride away, Hotel Carlton is the ideal base for a weekend break from the norm. Ms. Bernadette Koltai, Luxury Hotels Group’s Vice President, said: “Luxury Hotels Group is all about individuality, and they don’t come much more individual than the Hotel Carlton. It’s the antithesis of formulaic branded hotels typically found in provincial cities and has a genuinely interesting story. We’re delighted to strengthen our presence in Spain by working with such a distinguished hotel.” Sales Manager of Hotel Carlton, Ms. Silvia Varea, said: “The Carlton Hotel is proud to be partnering with such a dynamic, forward-thinking British company as Luxury Hotels Group and we trust that it’s the beginning of a successful business relationship”

Costa Express

Costa Express Installs 6000th Self-Serve Coffee Bar Costa Express, the UK’s leading on-the-go coffee brand, today announces the installation of its 6,000th self-serve coffee bar in Tesco High Wycombe. The milestone puts Costa Express on track to achieve its target of over 8,000 machines by 2020. Following the £59.5 million acquisition of Coffee Nation in March 2011 and after extensive re-branding and technological developments, Costa Express has grown at an average of 70 new self-serve coffee bars every month. The strength of the Costa brand combined with the convenience of the self-serve format has proved a winning combination with the machines easily accessed in a variety of locations including forecourts, convenience stores and workplaces.

Using leading technology, Costa Express expertly serves barista-style coffee by combining fresh milk with Costa’s famous freshly ground Mocha Italia blend – the same blend enjoyed in our stores by coffee lovers around the world. The self-serve machine provides customers with an interactive experience that appeals to all five senses: an elegant and sophisticated design, touch screen menu for easy use, the gentle soundtrack of a Costa store, the aroma from freshly made coffee and the taste of Costa’s delicious Mocha Italia blend. Murray McGowan, Costa Express Managing Director, comments; ‘Costa Express has enjoyed tremendous growth from 877 machines in 2011 to 6,000 today. We’ve always been confident that we can deliver an unbeatable coffee experience to on-the-go customers

by using interactive technology, great Costa Coffee and fresh milk. ‘This 6000th install milestone only continues to demonstrate that there is clear appetite for our awardwinning coffee brand. We’ve also been able to export the intelligent concept to international markets and are encouraged by the results, signifying the appeal of the brand overseas and potential for further growth.’ If you’d like further information on partnership opportunities with the Costa Express brand please contact the sales team on 0845 450 5757 or visit

Provide A 24/7 Hot Food Service For Hotel Guests & Staff Reducing Costs & Extending The Reach Hotels are a 24/7 operation and with budgets under increasing pressure, the focus is firmly on controlling the cost of catering by reviewing restaurant hours to fit new budgets. But, there is an additional challenge to consider as there is an increasing need to provide a hot food service for guests & staff outside of conventional catering hours. Bon Appetit’s award winning service is designed to satisfy both these needs as it can save the hotelier money on catering costs AND allow them to extend their hot food service to 24/7. A good example is the Holiday Inn Express in Crawley, where the Bon Appetit service has been in operation for over 2 years now providing their guests & staff with a 24/7 out of hours hot food service. Guests can now simply relax in their rooms after a long day with a tasty bite and a cup of coffee. There is no need to go in search of

an eatery or order a pizza. Their vending machine is stocked with breakfast butties, paninis, meatball subs, chicken nuggets and ice creams, but we can also supply an extensive range of meals, burgers and breakfast muffins as well. The feedback from staff and guests is that this service differentiates the Holiday Inn Express from its budget competitors. Selling prices, which are typically less than a takeaway, are set by the hotel. The hotel retains the profit on food sales. Bon Appetit provide a self managed service, with hotel staff managing the restocking of the vending machine and ordering of food. The equipment set up of a branded vending machine, microwave cabinet and microwaves requires liitle space as the footprint is only 2 metres wide x 1 metre deep. The power requirement is only 4 standard wall sockets.

But it is important that the food offer meets what staff & guests are looking for. Bon Appetit’s research over 12 years of trading is that the need is for a service that provides: • A speedy service that is available 24/7 • Tasty food that is of a good quality and is enjoyable • Provides healthy options for the health conscious • Good variety and choice in the food offering Go to to request your FREE ’11 Top Tips On How Hot Food Vending Can Benefit Your Workplace’ or simply phone 01293 426688 to discuss your needs Follow Bon Appetit on Twitter: @hotfoodending, Facebook: Bon Appetit and LinkedIn: Keith Pordum

Innovative bespoke lighting stuns the hospitality industry Chantelle Lighting is shaping the hospitality industry in terms of creating and manufacturing stunning lighting products. The company was born some two and a half decades ago, as Anthony Holly, managing director, focused on a vision to offer a personal service from inception, through to implementation and completion. Chantelle Lighting is approached regularly with requests for the relatively straightforward, to the weird and wonderful and every project undertaken is done so with commitment, creativity and a desire to produce the very best product for every customer. Chantelle is particularly proud of its bespoke capabilities, taking a design brief and creating light fittings which complement the interior design of a bar, restaurant or hotel setting. Anthony Holly, managing director said: “With over 27 years’ experience in the lighting industry, our team of experts understand exactly what is required to bring a design brief to life. “Our wide variety of products work wonderfully within the hospitality industry, adding ambience and creating a certain mood within a room. And our bespoke light fittings are great for designers who have an idea in mind, and want to create this from scratch. “Whatever the project, we are fully committed to offering high end products, but also a high end service to ensure the customer’s needs are met and the lighting transforms a room, as it should.”

Bright Goods Led Filament Lamps Recreate Bavarian Schloss In Manchester An installation of Bright Goods LED filament lamps has helped recreate the atmosphere of a traditional Bavarian schloss, or country house, within Manchester’s newest music and entertainments venue. Albert’s Schloss, which is located in Peter Street beneath the city’s Albert Hall, is a popular daytime destination for business and social meetings. However, as dusk approaches, it transforms seamlessly into an energetic, live music beer hall where Bright Goods LED filament lamps complement the overall ambience and experience. One of the UK’s foremost lighting design specialists, The Light Corporation (TLC), was commissioned to design a spectacular lighting system that not only achieved the performance of incandescent bulbs but also ensured flexibility, versatility and energy efficiency. At the heart of TLC’s innovation design is an imaginative installation of Bright Goods Josephine LED filament lamps augmented by an impressive array of George LED filament globe lamps.

The Josephine and George, which are amongst the most popular and best-selling models from the Bright Goods range of LED filament lamps, feature a unique crown-shaped filament and lattice filament respectively to ensure a beautiful, warm and welcoming light. Installed within a striking network of industrial copper pipework, the Josephine and George LED lamps provide excellent illumination that is fully dimmable to capture the magic, the mood and the moment. Designed to provide a timeless vintage feel, the Bright Goods LED product range includes a wide selection of popular shapes, including globes, squirrel cages, candles, long tubes and traditional GLS bulbs to create the designer-induced decorative glow, previously only the territory of energy-hungry incandescents. Where a filament bulb consistently in use over 10 hours a day would require replacing in less than a year, all lamps in the Bright Goods LED range are fully dimmable and provide a high-performance lifespan

of 30,000 hours which is around ten times that of a conventional filament bulb. “The lighting design brief we received for the Albert’s Schloss project was very wide which made the job challenging but also gave us the opportunity and freedom to demonstrate our creativity,” says Michael Wake of The Light Corporation. “That’s where the Bright Goods Josephine and George LED filament lamps were ideal first choices to bring our cutting edge design to life. Offering a perfect combination of elegance, style and energy efficiency, the Josephine and George enabled us to create the atmosphere of a traditional Bavarian schloss in the pulsing heart of Manchester. Although initially sceptical about using LED lamps to create the desired ambience, our client was blown away with what we were able to achieve and he’s delighted that we’ve helped to meet the overall goal - a customer experience that’s second to none. In fact, I now use Albert’s Schloss to demonstrate to other clients what we can achieve with LED filament lamps.”

Grounds for expansion with luxury garden rooms Savvy hospitality managers are seeing the benefits of additional (and quirky) suites in their grounds via the burgeoning luxury garden room sector. With the high end ‘glamping’ market very much on trend, discerning customers are willing to pay a premium for stand out accommodation that is suitably different – and Midlands-based Garden Hideouts are experiencing a surge of interest from the likes of boutique hotels, wedding venues and gastro pubs across the UK. They’re utilising the small space specialism that sister business The New & Used Boat Company has cornered the luxury canal boat market with. Space optimisation design skills, plus a top quality product that stands up to all the elements can throw at it, have helped position their ultra sleek pods, nostalgic shepherd huts and opulent Arca garden rooms at the top end of a market that is increasingly aspirational.

Finest Finnish structural plywood for the frames, premium Western Redwood Cedar cladding for a stunning and durable exterior finish, plus a very robust method of construction common to the Canadian house building industry (which together with 100mm wall and floor insulation means toasty warm winters and cool summers) makes for a sound, all-year-round and lasting investment. A particular USP is each inner is created by a specialist interior designer and comes ready fitted and furnished for all sorts of uses – even guest and staff rooms. The brand new ‘Luxe’ pods start at a generous 4 metres wide and 4.75 metres deep and are like nothing else on the market – they can even come with extra self catering facilities. This designer bedroom (with luxury en suite) will have guests fighting over it, plus it’s the ultimate bridal suite, while the interior design scheme wouldn’t look out of place in the choicest boutique hotel.

With fitted modern luxuries as standard and a host of optional extras too, these unique garden rooms are expertly hand crafted for (and put together in) the garden with no planning permission to worry about, tricky access issues, messy disruption or costly building works required. It’s very much a turnkey operation. Garden Hideouts also provide a no obligation and free site survey, which takes into consideration ground conditions, drainage and tree roots, foundation requirements, how much space it will take up, plus an idea of what it will look like in situ, the permanence of the structure and any mixed developments opportunities. With his proven history within the architectural antique trade, being the proprietor of “The Cast Iron Reclamation Company” which has been a supplier of architectural antiques and salvaged building materials to the retail and hospitality trade for over 20 years, he used his contacts worldwide to begin his search for original ice boxes and timber refrigerators. He was initially led to France and southern Europe, but a chance meeting led him further afield to South America and in particular Brazil and Argentina. Here he found some of the most beautifully made ice boxes

Joining 25 other Sheraton Grand properties worldwide, Sheraton Grand Krakow is the first Sheraton Grand property in Poland, ideally located on the bank of Vistula River and a foot away from the famous Wawel Castle. The hotel is undergoing a major restoration which will be

completed at the beginning of 2017. Sheraton Grand is one of many initiatives currently underway for Sheraton 2020, a comprehensive plan designed to solidify Sheraton as a leading global hotel brand of choice, everywhere. “We are thrilled to build on the brand’s proud heritage in East and Central Europe by launching our first Sheraton Grand in Poland” said Michael Wale, President, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Europe, Africa and Middle East. “The Sheraton Grand Krakow highlights our commitment to the Polish market where we already have six successful hotels and plan to further grow our portfolio.”

Lighting was also key to the design creating several atmosphere setting possibilities including making the room brighter or moodier depending on the time of day.

Sheraton Hotels & Resorts

The Sheraton Grand Krakow also features refreshed meeting facilities ideal for social gatherings and galas and offers four restaurants and bars including the famous Roof Top Terrace Bar & Lounge. “The entire management team and hotel associates have been gearing up for this special designation which is a great recognition of the memorable service experiences that we provide to our guests. Chalk One Up For Technology The Writing Is On The Badge Identifying staff is a perennial problem and in catering a high turnover of personnel often results in lost badges or expensive replacements at short notice. Fortunately a new range of rewritable badges from ChalkyWipe should put an end to this issue. Using the latest technology, new chalkable and drywipe materials are shaped by laser and personalised (if required) using digital full-colour vibrant printing, creating a robust re-usable badge that can be updated by the wearer using either standard chalks or the supplied liquid chalk and dry-wipe pens. Chalk boards and badges are not new in the catering sector, but until now the surfaces would inevitably wear quickly and ghost images would build up making new text tricky to read. These new materials, when combined with the Posterman pens, clean completely leaving a perfect surface for the next name.

Several sizes and shapes are available off-the-shelf and can ordered through the webshop, but ChalkyWipe also offer an in house personalisation service that will add your logo or other information direct to the badge. Different fixings can be ordered to suit specific uses and a neat magnetic fitting is ideal to avoid damage to the wearers clothing. The convenience, economy and eco-credentials make these badges an ideal solution for situations where names are frequently changed, eliminating the need for inserting fiddly bits of printed paper into slots. The retro hand-written feel of a chalked badge also fits in nicely with many restaurant and bar themes giving a more personal look for servers.

and hospitality sector for several years. These range from dish identifiers and bottle tags to self-standing chalkboards and place names. “Recent investment in new state-of-the-art equipment has enabled us to take full control of the production process from design to despatch and now gives us the facility to produce bespoke items competitively with minimal delay” “The full colour digital print facility is a fantastic advantage for badges and similar items since we no longer have to limit the complexity of designs and can if needed produce production quality samples which identically match the finished item.”

In addition to the rewritable badges, ChalkyWipe produce a varied range of innovative chalkable products that have been supplied to the catering

Hilton Hotel

Goddard Littlefair mastermind major transformation of the Hilton Hotel, Budapest Luxury interior designers Goddard Littlefair have completed the first phase of an extensive

‘Budapest is a stunning city and one I have been lucky enough to work in on several occasions’, commented

refurbishment of the Hilton Hotel, Budapest, encompassing the principal public areas - the reception, lounge, lobby bar and executive lounge, along with three sample bedroom treatments and linking corridor areas.

Goddard Littlefair Director and Co-founder Martin Goddard. ‘Being able to work here once again has made this project a real pleasure. It was also very professionally satisfying; it’s rare to get a chance to help accomplish a design transformation on this scale of such a premier European hotel.’

The hotel, which is part of the Danubius Hotels Group, is located on a stunning site at the centre of the Hungarian capital, directly alongside St Matthias Church. The new interior – representing the first full revamp of the hotel since 1977, when it was originally opened – brings a new light and elegant contemporaneity to the common parts via a palette of refined silvers and golds with accent colours, together with dark timber; brass inlays; black and white granite; a wide range of bespoke furniture and fabrics - a hallmark of Goddard Littlefair schemes – as well as a number of stunning art installations, speciallycommissioned for the project from local Hungarian artists and specialist maker studios.

The Hilton Hotel, Budapest is sited on the western, ‘Buda’ side of the Danube, which bisects the city and separates the mainly medieval, hilly ‘Castle Quarter’ of ‘Buda’ from the ‘Pest’ side of the city, where the architecture dates more from the period of the AustroHungarian empire, including many fine neo-classical, baroque and art nouveau buildings. The hotel was originally designed and constructed in the late 1970s by the Danubius Hotels & Spa Co, which was then a state-run entity and was built around and partly incorporates both a 13th-century Dominican cloister and the baroque façade of a 16th- century Jesuit College. In 1992, the Danubius Hotels & Spa Co was listed on the Budapest Stock Exchange and it is now a

major hospitality specialist operating across the region, with upwards of 20 hotels in Hungary and a portfolio that also includes major hotels in Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, as well as one in London. ‘From a business point of view’, Martin Goddard explained, ‘the existing hotel was mostly used by large tour parties from the States and the Far East and was a popular destination on the conference circuit. The brief was to maintain this strong appeal, but also to appeal to more transient leisure guests, who were increasing in numbers as the appeal of the Buda side of the city continued to grow for a new generation of tourists, thanks to a burgeoning new restaurant scene and a number of boutique hotels.’ The brief to Goddard Littlefair was to redesign the hotel completely, including all public areas (except for the ‘Icon’ restaurant, which had been refurbished just prior to commission). The works were to be phased, so that the hotel could stay open throughout. The first phase is now complete. Phase two, to complete later this spring, is comprised of 136 bedrooms on

the north side of the hotel, along with a new separate, lower ground floor entrance for group check-in, whilst a final phase will encompass the ballroom, gym, meeting rooms and the remaining 264 bedrooms on the hotel’s south side, together with the presidential suite.

larger feature panels directly behind each desk, which were hand-painted in an art nouveau style with a wisteria illustration by Hungarian specialists Rákosy Glass in an art nouveau style. The dark timber and gold metal combination is repeated in a plainer rectangular configuration for the wall treatment to the right hand side of the reception hall.

‘We spent considerable time at the beginning of the project ensuring that we understood both the client vision and the existing and potential customer demographic’ commented Martin Goddard. ‘We knew the client was keen to express strong links to the city itself, so whilst the overall concept and positioning is contemporary classic, with a luxury, layered treatment, we also sought to incorporate the work of local artists and makers throughout to ensure we created a uniquely Budapest feel, integrated with the quality touchpoints that reassure international customers they are in safe Hilton hands.’

The reception space is lit by a series of large, tripletiered, scallop-edged chandeliers, set into ceiling troughs. Flooring is in highly-polished white granite, with a thin frame surround in antiqued black granite, matching that of the desks, along with a taupe and fawn rug, bespoke-designed by Goddard Littlefair in a geometric pattern, located in the seating area to the front of the space, where the silvered glass wall panels are to be found again, along with a number of retail display units. The furniture here is a mix of 3-seater sofas, armchairs and wing-back chairs, arranged around incidental tables.

Design Walk-through: Although the original location of the main entrance has been maintained, the space-planning of the new reception area was completely changed. To prevent bottle-necks, the single monolithic desk which previously sat directly opposite the entrance has been replaced by three smaller desks, set over the right of the space on timber bases, with surrounds in antiqued black granite and frontispieces in halo-lit dark timber with a geometric-pattern gold metal inlay, along with white desk lamps on right-angled brass stands at each end. The wall behind reception is inlaid with a series of vertical panels in silvered glass, interspersed with

‘Pretty much every item of furniture the eye can see beyond the art installations is a bespoke Goddard Littlefair design’, explained the project’s lead designer and Goddard Littlefair Associate Kristy Unger. ‘That’s very much the Goddard Littlefair ethos and ensures that our interiors schemes not only look unique, but have that un-placeable quality we believe is a key element of luxury.’ The over-arching colour scheme for the public areas is made up of a neutral base with layers of gold and silver plus accent colours for different areas, ranging from blues and greens to mustards and pale purples,

the World Of Hospitality

whilst the remaining material palette includes granite, dark timber, walnut and verre eglomisé. The colours in the reception are slightly more restrained, with punchier blues and plusher velvets used to distinguish the lounge area. To aid circulation, the group check-in has been moved to the other side of the reception space and is now located against the left-hand wall. To overcome an existing floor level change immediately beyond this area, a series of bulky ramps was removed and has been replaced by a hoist, which can be used both for wheelchair access and in order to aid deliveries to the lobby bar, located directly behind. The lobby bar features fabric-wrapped walls and a geometric blue and green patterned carpet, with the bar itself clad in leather with timber and glass detailing. The lounge effectively forms a direct continuation of the reception and is located at the top left of the open-plan L-shaped entrance area. The stunning, double-height space features a halo-lit leather screen to rear, bespoke-made by a London maker, which draws the eye through and is inset into a timber wall with gold metal inlay, as in reception. The space is visually dominated, however, by a striking gold and silver glass sculpture that hangs from the ceiling and is made up of dozens of individual glass pieces, designed by Hungarian artist Sándor Oláh and fabricated by local glass specialists Belight. The striking carpet here is again in a bespoke geometric pattern in grey and white, also designed inhouse by Goddard Littlefair, with stand-out armchairs

in teal velvet along the left wall of the space. Standard lamps have a right-angled brass base and are largerscale versions of those used on the reception desks. Above and to the right of the space, a mezzanine area is discreetly announced by its gold-patterned metal balcony, which delineates the business level quiet zone, with the pattern linking both to a series of screens directly below and the pattern used for the reception desks. A bespoke water-pattern carpet in this mezzanine section was inspired by the River Danube. To the rear of the lounge area an existing stair has been dramatically-reworked and features new cladding in bevel-edged white glass around the central column, together with a new gold metal balustrade, echoing the mezzanine business area. The stair treads themselves have been re-clad in a bespoke carpet, with the underside painted white to match the column. Drama is added by two woven panels (created by András Gönci of Arax), set against the existing stone walls, with one reaching more than 9m in height. Executive members of Hilton Hotels are allowed access to a special executive lounge on the hotel’s third floor, which is made up of a reception, dining area, buffet and pantry, plus a series of soft-dining tables and seats arranged alongside the window, with stunning views back over the Danube towards the Hungarian parliament building.

Hilton Hotel

A seating area at the centre is visible to other hotel guests from above. Glass, sculptural lighting and screens add drama. ‘Ceilings were quite low in this area’, Kristy Unger added ‘and we didn’t want to use downlights, but we did need to maximise translucency’. Wall mirrors added extra light through reflectivity, whilst furnishing, in velvets and textured leather, is subtly colourful in greens, smokey blues and mustard-yellow. The curtains feature a pattern that subtly reflects the stained glass window. The executive lounge also extends into a nook area located within the hotel’s tower (which has medieval sections, but is mainly part of the original 1977

For the mock-up bedrooms, the approach was to create a classic modern look that took on the colours of the public space interiors palette, but used them in a simple, elegant and slightly softer way. Flooring is in timber-effect ceramic, along with carpeted areas, whilst fabric panels are used for the bed headboard and the television wall. Mirrors reflect light back into the space, which also features dark timber and faux leather wall panels, with doors in a textured timber-effect laminate. Oval bedside tables with wall lamps are bracketed to the walls with an antique metal effect around the top and real metal edges around the joinery work.

building, with stained-glass window treatments referring both to this and the St Matthias Church alongside). It features double-height timber bookshelves with verre eglomisé mirroring at the back and a carpet inspired not only by the Danube on this occasion, but by the particular way the river parts and flows around Margaret Island at its centre.

The bathroom treatment includes stone and ceramic walls with paint above and a granite-topped vanity unit. The entire wall behind the vanity unit is mirrored and a feature, halo-lit metal framed mirror above.

‘As well as forming part of the tower area’ Kristy Unger explained, ‘the majority of the remaining Dominican cloister and cloister grounds are located within the open-air public conference area. The beautiful medieval stone walls and caves left behind from the 13th century are located alongside – and inspiring our treatment for - the new, lower-level group check-in that will form part of the second phase of the project.’

‘We know our guests want extraordinary public spaces that still feel like home and have real cosmopolitan flair’ said Zoltan Arvai, General Manager, Hilton Hotel, Budapest, adding ‘I feel absolutely passionate about the new designs inspired by Goddard Littlefair and Hilton Worldwide’.

The approach corridor was also part of the bedroom scheme, with new carpets and artwork.

Located on the top floors, the 913-square-metre three-bedroom suite displays paintings and art from the Churchill archives, special courtesy of the Churchill Heritage Ltd. 13 April, 2016, Dubai, UAE: The St. Regis Dubai at Al Habtoor City has announced the official launch of the hotel’s Sir Winston Churchill Suite. The spacious two-storey suite was formally debuted in the presence of Mr. Randolph Churchill, the great grandson of the inspirational statesman, writer, orator and Prime Minister who led Britain to victory in the Second World War and Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, Chairman of Al Habtoor Group. Fittingly designed to meet the discerning eye of Sir Winston Churchill, the three-bedroom suite holds a meticulous attention to quality and detail, housing a collection of 15 paintings and art pieces from the Churchill archives that include portraits and photographs of the legendary statesman, paintings he mastered himself, and a well maintained Cuban cigar that once belonged to him from the private collection of Chairman Khalaf Al Habtoor. Spread across 913-square-metres, the sprawling suite is the largest of the hotel’s 52 luxurious suites and even bigger than the 800-square-metre Astor Ballroom.

Head Sommelier at Royal China Club Shares Wine Pairing Tips for Chinese Food London Wine Week will be taking place from 23-29 May 2016 and will encompass a week-long celebration of the Capital’s thriving wine scene. To celebrate the occasion, Head Sommelier of Royal China Club, Peter Chan, has lent his expertise to recommend how best to complement the rich oriental flavours of a traditional Chinese dish at Royal China. Wine pairings take into consideration the sugar, acid, alcohol and tannins of the wine to evaluate how they can be accentuated or minimized when paired with certain types of food. However, with Dim Sum and Sweet & Sour Chicken to contend with, Chinese cuisine is arguably one of the most difficult foods to

wine pair with. Fortunately, Royal China Club’s Head Sommelier, Peter Chan, has shared his wine pairing tips below. Dish: Peking Duck - £45 Pair with: Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir Dish: Buddha Jump over the Wall (slow cooked soup with mixed wind-dried seafood & smoked ham) - £34 Pair with: A dry sherry Dish: Pan-fried King Scallop with Foie Gras - £22.80 Pair with: Red Wine Southern Right Pinotage Dish: Steamed Fresh Spider Crab (seasonal price) Pair with: St Clair Sauvignon Reserve
