VOLUNTEER
Run for a Residential Design Review Committee or Village Association Office
By Karen DempseyEachyear, elections are held for more than 100 volunteer leadership positions within our community. Volunteers are critical to The Woodlands, as thousands of volunteer hours are necessary to carry out the governance of our community. As in the past, elections will continue to be held in February for the Residential Design Review Committees (RDRCs) and the Village Associations. The Woodlands Township Board of Directors election is held in November and follows a different process.
Residential Design Review Committee
The majority of properties in The Woodlands Township are encumbered with either The Woodlands Community Association Covenants or The Woodlands Association Covenants (both herein referred to as the Covenants). In 2010, these community associations transferred responsibility for Covenant administration to the Township as part of the governance transition, and the Covenants continue to be encumbered on property throughout The Woodlands. As prescribed by the Covenants, five-member resident-elected committees serve to facilitate property improvements of their peers. Elected to one-year terms, residents dedicate several hours each month to review the applications submitted by their neighbors for improvements to their property. Residents interested in ensuring that design standards are maintained in The Woodlands may be interested in filing for Residential Design Review Committee candidacy in their village.
The following Residential Design Review Committee positions are up for election in February 2015:
All Villages
• Up to five Residential Design Review Committee members to be elected for each village, all serving one-year terms. This includes two committees for villages such as Indian Springs and Grogan’s Mill, which are divided into two geographic areas based on Covenant imposition.
Village Associations
Each of the villages has an association which facilitates activities specific to their village. Each village will have officer positions and/or area (neighborhood) representative positions open for the 2015 election. While officer duties may vary by position and/or specific village (refer to each village’s bylaws on-line at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov), all villages seek enthusiastic residents looking to volunteer their service and leadership for their closest Woodlands neighbors.
The following village association positions are up for election in February 2015:
Alden Bridge Village Association
• 10 At-Large Area Representatives (two-year terms)
Cochran’s Crossing Village Association
• 18 At-Large Area Representatives (one-year terms)
College Park Village Association
• President (two-year term)
• Secretary (two-year term)
• Nine At-Large Area Representatives (one-year terms)
Creekside Park Village Association
• President (two-year term)
• Secretary (two-year term)
• Events Chair (one-year term)
• 10 At-Large Area Representatives (one-year terms)
Grogan’s Mill Village Association
• Seven At-Large Area Representatives (two-year terms)
Indian Springs Village Association
• President (two-year term)
• Secretary (two-year term)
• Six At-Large Area Representatives (two-year terms)
Panther Creek Village Association
• Vice President (two-year term)
• Secretary (two-year term)
• Six At-Large Area Representatives (two-year terms)
Sterling Ridge Village Association
• Eight At-Large Village Directors (two-year terms)
Filing for Office
Filing packets and related information can be found on The Woodlands Township website, www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov, at Residential Design Review Committee meetings and through the Village Association presidents. Filing for all community positions begins January 2, 2015, and continues through January 22, 2015, at 5 p.m. In accordance with the current election procedures, candidates who are interested in running, but do not file by the deadline will be able to run as a write-in candidate only if they file as such by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2015.
Cancellation of Uncontested Elections
In the February 2015 election, for any Residential Design Review Committee or Village Association that does not have a contested race as of 5 p.m. on January 28, the entity’s election will be cancelled and the seating and/ or filling of vacancies will proceed in accordance with the entity’s bylaws.

GARDENING 101:
Water-Wise for a Lush Lawn & Garden
By Lucinda ValdesWinter—when
lawns and plants are dormant—is the best time to think about managing landscape for the heat of summer. Noted turf and gardening experts, Michael Potter and Debbie Banfield, team up to share water-thrifty trends and techniques at the free Gardening 101 Seminar: Water-Wise in Your Landscape on Saturday, February 7, 2015, from 9 a.m. to noon. Montgomery County AgriLife Extension Agent Michael Potter is on a mission to help homeowners have beautiful, healthy grass. “Loving it to death,” he says, is the biggest mistake made when caring for lawns. In an entertaining, fast-paced presentation, Mr. Potter will reveal how to wean grass off water.
Promoting the latest research from Texas A&M, Mr. Potter champions best practices to manage lawns with proper fertilizing, mowing and irrigation to control weeds, diseases and pests. “Reduction of weeds,” he explains, “boils down to proper maintenance and watering.” Debbie Banfield, Landscape for Life facilitator, will reveal how to use natural systems to create a healthy, beautiful home landscape while conserving water. Two techniques, rain gardens and bio swales, harness water that falls naturally on the landscape. From design techniques to plant selection, Ms. Banfield will provide the basics of siting and developing a rain garden or bio swale. Learn how to utilize rain that pours from roofs and other surfaces, direct drainage and increase permeable surfaces to reduce runoff.
Space is limited. The free seminar will be held at The Woodlands Township Board Chambers, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. To reserve a seat or register for this or any upcoming gardening event, please visit www.thewoodlandstownshiptx.gov/gardeningevents. PLEASE REMEMBER
The Woodlands Covenants require that trash and recycling carts must be stored out of public view. Leaving trash carts out longer than necessary detracts from the curb appeal of neighborhoods and becomes an eyesore. Trash and recycling receptacles may be placed at the curb on the day prior to trash pickup and should be removed from the curb by the end of the day of trash pickup.
NEWS FROM THE VILLAGES OF THE WOODLANDS
Alden Bridge
Happy New Year from Alden Bridge! Thanks to all who decorated your homes so beautifully this festive season. It was very hard to choose winners of the Holiday Lighting & Decorating contest!
The first 2015 village association board/residents’ meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at 7 p.m. at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd., and residents are definitely encouraged to join us. This month’s guest speaker will be Gil Staley, CEO of The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership. Gil will provide an informative update on commercial development in The Woodlands.
Make the most of living in The Woodlands by becoming involved in your village in 2015! Attend our meetings, volunteer for village events, perhaps even run for a position on our village association board. We’ll elect 10 at-large area representatives and five members of our Residential Design Review Committee in February. You can learn more about the upcoming election on the Township website. Filing ends this month.
As usual, we have a lot planned this year for Alden Bridge residents. We’re already planning our largest event, the annual Spring Festival on the Saturday before Easter. We’ll award scholarships to Alden Bridge students and prizes to winners of our Yard of the Month and Halloween’s Spookiest House contests. We’ll participate in the Fourth of July Parade, Villages’ Flea Markets, our annual Astros baseball game outing, and other events during the year. You’ll find information about our activities on our website, www.aldenbridge.org, and by subscribing to our monthly newsletter (send your e-mail address to info@ aldenbridge.org). We’ll need volunteers for all of these activities, so please contact us to sign up. It’s rewarding and it’s fun!
Please contact your village board members with any issues or concerns. We’re looking forward to meeting residents and being of assistance in this new year.

Cochran’s Crossing
As the new year begins, it is a good time to look back at some activities that kept Cochran’s Crossing Village Association busy in 2014. From the end of the year back, here are highlights:
• Christmas lighting judging – categories include the outstanding neighborhood as well as individual home.
• Coinciding in 2014 with the 40th anniversary was the Cochran’s Crossing Fall Festival which has been a free annual event with games, food, petting zoo, pony rides, and fun in the newly renovated Shadowbend Park. This Festival has been held for more than 20 years. Planning for this and many of the activities mentioned is carried out over a number of months.
• The association provided funding for The Woodlands High School and College Park students to attend live videos of the Metropolitan Opera at Cinemark Theater in Market Street.
• Cochran’s Crossing provided funding and awarding of scholarships for

deserving students as well as financial support to help elementary teachers in Cochran’s Crossing Elementary Schools fund special projects.
• Significant attention was also given to environmental and beautification concerns in The Woodlands.
• Village association board members and other others interested in keeping The Woodlands clean participated in the GreenUp event sponsored by the Township.
• Candidates for Township, state, county, and school board offices presented their positions at village meetings.
There are 18 village board positions on the Cochran’s Crossing village association board. Elections will be held next month. If you are interested in participating, stop by the Township on Technology Forest Drive and pick up an information packet. Board meetings are held at the Township offices at 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month except December. Cochran’s Crossing residents are welcome to attend the meetings and provide comments, questions, or concerns on matters affecting The Woodlands.

College Park
From all of the village of College Park, we wish all of our residents of The Woodlands a very happy and prosperous 2015! The holidays are such a wonderful time of year for family and friends to share their gift of love and enjoy activities together. Our community makes it a joy to live in, no matter what time of year.
In November, our village of College Park participated in the 3R Bazaar, which is the annual recycling endeavor that allows all residents to bring their wine corks and plastic caps they diligently saved all year. The poundage of all that is brought in and weighed, and each
MEETING INFORMATION

village earns money for their scholarship fund. The volunteers are also considered in this event, as credit for the funds.
We are very pleased to see the construction of Highway 242 flyovers near completion. It has been very challenging for the residents of our village to commute around Highway 242 with Interstate 45 being closed on weekends and different areas around the construction being closed nightly. Thank you all for being patient, and we must think positively that it will alleviate traffic for our residents in the long run. Our thanks go out to all of the law enforcement that helped with traffic, and the most thanks go to the construction employees who worked through the long hours and challenging weather to build it all.
Also, new to our village is Costco. This is a great addition to our village and has brought all residents of The Woodlands over our way. Two new hospitals, along with St. Luke’s already in place, will bring more and more residents into College Park.
Our monthly meeting will be the third Monday of January 2015. We hope the residents of College Park consider attending our meetings in 2015. There is an event happening almost every month during the year which needs volunteers and fresh ideas. Please refer to our website and newsletter for updates and times and dates of activities. In closing, make your New Year’s resolutions come true, and stay safe and healthy!

As you put away your holiday decorations and start into the new year, it’s a great time to think about chili –specifically, the Creekside Park Annual Chili Cookoff and Winter Festival on January 17, 2015, from noon to 4 p.m. at Rob Fleming Park.
Why should you go? Let’s start with the chili. If you’ve got the best chili recipe in town, jump over to the Creekside Park village website (www.creeksideparkvillage.com) and see if there’s still room for an entry. We are limiting the number of teams, and you don’t want to miss your chance to vie for the coveted People’s Choice awards for best chili and best decorated tent. And if you don’t want to cook, you definitely want to help judge our top chili-cooking teams.
Don’t like chili? We’ll have hot dogs and soda, the DJ from our summertime pool party, a train around the park, and if you haven’t had enough of the cold, a snow hill so our Texas kids can get a little taste of winter fun. You do not want to miss this chance to experience the neighborliness and fun of living in Creekside Park!

Panther Creek
Your Panther Creek Village Association again this year provided Christmas gifts to a family selected for us by Interfaith of The Woodlands.
Keeping Panther Creek a beautiful place to live is a big job, and it takes all of us to get it done. Whether it is mowing and raking your own yard, or caring for the little island in your cul-de-sac, or keeping our many pathways trash free, there are many ways for you to help keep our hometown a great place to live. Special thanks go out to families and groups in Panther Creek that have volunteered to be Adopt-a-Path stewards. They include the Grimes-Hanlin and Klein families, plus the Rowing Club of The Woodlands and students and teachers of the Sally K. Ride Elementary School. Contact The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3800 for information on how you can join in.
After the holidays, another way we all can help keep Panther Creek an inviting community is to follow the rules for trash disposal. Trash carts must be returned to an out-of-sight location after pickup. Special pickups of bulky and oversized items can be requested from Waste Management at no additional cost by calling 800-800-5804 at least two days beforehand.
Your Panther Creek Village Association meets the second Thursday of each month at The Woodlands Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd, at 7 p.m. All residents are welcome to come and hear reports from local law enforcement, community events, and community leaders as they address the issues that affect you. These meetings are also a great place to get your neighborhood and Woodlands-wide questions answered and problems and issues addressed.

We’d like to start out the new year by wishing all a healthy, safe, and prosperous 2015! Congratulations to the winners of the Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest in Sterling Ridge, and thank you to all who decorated to make Sterling Ridge even more beautiful for the holiday season.
We’ll be busy in 2015, with plans to participate in The Woodlands Marathon Cheer Challenge, Earth Day GreenUp, the 3R Bazaar, and of course, the ninth annual Sterling Ridge BBQ Challenge and Kids Festival and the 2015 Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest. We also hope to again provide funding to the PTOs of area elementary schools, as we did in 2014 for Coulson Tough and Cedric Smith Elementary Schools. We need plenty of volunteers to make all this happen, so if you would like to get involved, please read the next paragraph.
Filing is under way now for the village association board and Residential Design and Review Committee (RDRC) members. The village association board has eight positions on the ballot, and if you would like to participate in the operations of the village association or the RDRC, you can sign up for the election at The Woodlands Township office at 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. To file for village association board you must be at least 18 years of age, and your principal place of residence must be within the Village of Sterling Ridge. The same requirements apply to voting, which will be February 21, 2015, also at The Woodlands Township office. Additional details will be on The Woodlands Township’s website at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov, as well as the newly improved Sterling Ridge website at www.sterling-ridge.org
Even if you are not on the board, you can still help with the events. You can contact us via the Sterling Ridge website.

Disasters change things. When an emergency happens you may have to decide what to do very quickly, while you are worrying about what might happen. By planning ahead, it will be easier to make the right decisions when the worst happens. Once you know which disasters could happen in your community, there are things you can do to lower your risk of injury or property damage. Here are some suggestions:
TORNADO Add a tornado-safe room to your home, or add extra protection to an existing room to keep your family safe in a tornado. Look for FEMA publication 320 for more information.
HURRICANE Install hurricane shutters. Keep trees around your house trimmed to

prevent damage from falling branches. Secure your soffits to make sure that they won’t provide a way for wind and water to get into your home. Make sure entryway doors have three hinges and a deadbolt lock.
WILDFIRE Use fire-resistant building materials like shingles and siding. Cut back branches and brush within 30 feet of your home. Keep firewood at least 30 feet away. Check into the National Fire Protection Association’s Firewise program for more ideas.

adequate flood venting. Use flood-resistant building materials when you build or remodel. Taking steps like these can lower your flood insurance rates.
EARTHQUAKE Secure your furniture, appliances, and water heater to walls and floors. Install safety catches on cabinets and cupboard doors. Make sure your appliances are connected with flexible connections. Consider using a safety film on your windows or installing laminated glass to prevent injuries from broken glass.

TEXTILES
A New Recycling Frontier Textiles are not waste; they are a resource. Donate today!
Whathappens to the outgrown, outdated, unwanted clothing, shoes and accessories languishing in closets and dressers? Consider these statistics from the EPA and Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles:
• Goodwill started providing bins for donation of clothing as early as the 1940s.
• Americans now buy five times more clothing than they did in 1980.
• Between 1999 and 2009, the volume of textile trash rose by 40 percent.
• The average person discards 70 pounds of clothing a year.
Recycling textiles in The Woodlands is easy. Charitable organizations provide convenient drop-off and pick-up options. One of the organizations, such as the Salvation Army, is able to resell only about 20 percent of clothing donations. Benefitting the non-profits, a burgeoning new industry of entrepreneurs purchases unsellable textiles for redistribution and recycling.
Clean textiles have a future beyond the landfill. Wearable clothing is sorted; vintage and collectibles are sold; some is bailed and shipped overseas. Damaged, yet clean, materials are reprocessed into new fabric, padding or wiping clothes. For additional donation opportunities, please visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/recycling.

It’s not a trash can, you know! Some paper products and wipes are advertised as ‘flushable’ but they aren’t. Sure, they will flush down, but they won’t flush OUT. Wipes won’t decompose…they get caught up in wastewater treatment plant screens and filters – and that costs money to clear and repair!

Arbor Day Celebration

Mark your calendars for The Woodlands’ annual Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, January 24, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the award-winning Rob Fleming Park in The Woodlands’ Village of Creekside Park. The annual Arbor Day Celebration is sponsored by The Woodlands Development Company, a whollyowned subsidiary of The Howard Hughes Corporation®, The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau, Repsol, The Woodlands Township and The Brickman Group, Ltd.
Since 1977, The Woodlands Development Company and its sponsors have given away more than 1.2 million tree seedlings at Arbor Day. For the third year, The Woodlands Township will donate an additional 91,000 tree seedlings to be distributed at the event to enhance the forested setting of The Woodlands. This brings the total amount of tree seedlings to be handed out to 121,000 this year. “The Woodlands Township knows the importance of Arbor Day and is proud to sponsor this community tradition. The trees given away at the Arbor Day Celebration help long-lasting efforts to add thousands of trees in residential yards, roadways, commercial properties, parks and open spaces,” said The Woodlands Township Chairman Bruce Tough. “Arbor Day helps to highlight the natural beauty of The Woodlands — its trees.” Eight different varieties of free tree seedlings
will be available, continuing a 39-year tradition. The selections of trees include Eastern Redbud, Flowering Dogwood, Loblolly Pine, River Birch, Southern Wax Myrtle, Sweetbay Magnolia, Shumard Oak and Water Oak. In addition to receiving free tree seedlings, guests may register at the event to win one of five, seven-gallon native trees. The drawings will take place hourly, and guests must be present to win.

Residents are encouraged to collect their free tree seedlings at the Arbor Day Celebration and plant them on their property, in community open space reserves and in forest preserves. “We are honored to be able to present free tree seedlings to visitors at the annual Arbor Day Celebration,” said Gordy Bunch, chairman of The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The Woodlands is known for its trees and green space within the 28,000 forested acres that encompass the master planned community. Trees are a vital part of making The Woodlands a true destination.”
Since 1977, more than 1.2 million trees have been given away at The Woodlands Arbor Day Celebration.
“Throughout the years at the Arbor Day Celebration, the developer and sponsors have given away more than one million tree seedlings to help perpetuate the forested environment in The Woodlands,” said Tim Welbes, co-president of The Woodlands Development Company. “We are grateful to all of the sponsors who make this a wonderful, free community event. The Water-Wise Village Challenge

Take the pledge this winter to turn off the sprinkler system. Pledging is easy! Simply submit your pledge:
•
By Paula PaciorekIn the last five years, there has been a great deal of conversation about water conservation in Texas as persistent acute droughts, rapid population growth and groundwater extraction continue to strain the availability of freshwater resources. Recent research on the state of water supply forecasts that a significant portion of the water available to Texans in the future will need to be derived from current water conservation strategies and practices. Particularly in The Woodlands, conservation efforts have focused on outdoor irrigation as the most successful strategy to achieve current and future water conservation goals. On an annual average, approximately 50 percent of the total residential water use in The Woodlands is utilized for outdoor irrigation purposes.
During the spring and summer months, outdoor irrigation can peak to 80 percent of the total water use for an average household in The Woodlands. From this percentage, as much as 50 percent is often wasted to runoff and evaporation. So, when it comes to water conservation, outdoor irrigation reduction offers a tremendous opportunity to achieve our current water conservation goals. It is one of the easiest and most efficient ways to increase water savings. During winter, this goal can be achieved almost effortlessly. Turf, particularly St. Augustine grass, widely adopted in The Woodlands, goes dormant during winter and does not require any watering during this season. By turning off the automated sprinkler system and avoiding watering the lawn during winter, residents can significantly contribute to conserving the water supply while the grass naturally discolors and hibernates.
This winter, The Woodlands Township invites residents to participate in the Water-Wise Village Challenge to help conserve our water supply. Residents will have the opportunity to pledge to conserve water while earning contest points for their villages. For more information on this challenge, please visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/waterpledge or contact The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department at 281-210-3800.
