The Woodlands 2013 Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest
Join in the fun of the annual Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest! Each village association coordinates their own contest, including dates and publicity, with support from The Woodlands Township and The Woodlands Fire Department. There are usually two categories: Best Home in the village and Best Neighborhood in the village. A neighborhood is broadly defined as a few homes located in close proximity, or an entire cul-de-sac or subdivision. Best Home prizes include a yard sign and plaque. A yard sign and Ice Rink passes will be awarded to Best Neighborhood. Members of each village association serve as contest judges. Selection of winners is left to the sole discretion of the judges. Please check your village association’s Web site for more details about your respective village.

DECEMBER 2013 THE WOODLANDS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE 17
NEWS FROM THE VILLAGES OF THE WOODLANDS
Alden Bridge
Alden Bridge wishes you a happy holiday season! We hope that everyone has a safe and joyous December! Keep it a safe holiday season by being aware of your surroundings while you’re out and about. Keep your home and car doors locked, don’t leave any of those holiday packages visible in the car when you go shopping, and don’t forget to utilize Vacation Watch if you’re planning to be out of town during the holidays.
Due to the holiday season, we skip our monthly residents meeting in December. Our next meeting is scheduled for January 14, 2014, at 7 p.m. at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. We’ll have a speaker from the Montgomery County Food Bank.
It’s time to trim your home and yard for this year’s Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest! Judges will visit all Alden Bridge homes December 9-16, so turn on your lights every night during that period. We’ll choose one best home and one best neighborhood or group of homes in Alden Bridge. Winning homes will be awarded on Tuesday, December 17, between 6 and 8 p.m.
Have you ever thought of serving our village through a position on our village association board? Filing for board election begins on December 26 for the election in February. Alden Bridge will elect nine at-large Area Representatives for two-year terms, plus five Residential Design Review Committee members for one-year terms. You can obtain the pertinent information and filing forms from the Township Web site.
We continue to welcome additions to our electronic mailing list. Please send your email address to info@aldenbridge.org. Your address will not be shared and will be used only to distribute village news. Also please visit our Web site, www.aldenbridge.org, and our Facebook page.
Thanks again to everyone who contributed to our village association in any way during 2013. Special thanks to all of our event and program sponsors! Your support is very much appreciated!

Cochran’s Crossing
December is the only month without a Cochran’s Crossing Village Association board meeting. However this is an opportunity to discuss some aspects of Cochran’s Crossing Village Association that have remained constant over the years.
Although all the villages of The Woodlands play an active role in our community, Cochran’s Crossing Village Association has more members on its board (18) than any of the other village boards. That is a good feature since it provides a core group of Cochran’s Crossing residents for support of Township and Village-based activities. It is also a challenge since board positions must be filled with Cochran’s Crossing residents who will be active and participate as board members. In fact, the bylaws state official business can only be conducted when a majority of the board is present. Even if there is a vacancy on the board it is still necessary to have at least 10 board members at a meeting.
We have been fortunate. Rarely has there been a need to postpone any matter due to a lack of quorum. When vacancies have occurred on the board, there have been interested, well qualified individuals ready to fill those positions. This fall, for example, two of our board members resigned due to work or family priorities. This would have made it somewhat difficult to assure quorums for meetings. In both cases, Cochran’s Crossing Village Association residents expressed a desire to serve on the board. New to the board are Ned Chapman, an attorney, and Dilyn Loveless, who moved to
The Woodlands this past year with her husband and their family (which includes 18-month-old triplets).
Board activities for 2013 will be detailed in the February 2014 community magazine. That list will include the ways Cochran’s Crossing Village Association has supported Township-wide events and worked with community organizations including Scout groups, elementary schools, The Woodlands and College Park High Schools as well as businesses such as Kroger and PhysiciansER.
Although there is not a board meeting this month, a good example of our activities is the annual Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest. All villages participate in the contest, but timing, judging and awarding are up to the board of each village.
Last year, the best home in Cochran’s Crossing was awarded to The Lyon Family on Driftoak, and the best neighborhood (for the 10th consecutive year) was Edgmire Place.
If you are a Cochran’s Crossing resident and want to get involved as a volunteer or to learn more about the village association board, please come to a village board meeting. They are held at 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month

Indian Springs
2013 Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest
The Indian Springs Village Association, along with support from The Woodlands Township and The Woodlands Fire Department, is pleased to announce the 2013 Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest. Indian Springs Village Assocation judges will be out in neighborhoods December 6 through 8.
The Best Home 2012 in Peaceful Canyon, always on the lookout for creative decorating ideas, added a movie of Santa checking his list that could be seen in an upstairs window.
The Best Neighborhood 2012, Mirror Ridge, used billboards or lawn signs, one for each of the 12 Days of Christmas according to the popular holiday song. Another resident, high school student Andy Martinez, produced the design of the 12 billboards. He then recruited more than a dozen
neighborhood kids to help him paint the signs. One little painter was only five years old! Signs were spread throughout the neighborhood as a nice addition to the beautiful, coordinated decorating efforts of the homeowners.
CERT Emergency Kit
With professional administration from The Woodlands CERT, the Indian Springs Village Association has provided support for The Village Team Kit for Emergency Response to be made available to our village. With the numerous CERT members living in our village, this program will assist with ready access to emergency materials, if needed, for our trained resident volunteers. The Woodlands Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is hosted by The Woodlands Fire Department and the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management. The CERT program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event

Panther Creek
The 40th annual National Night Out was a big success again with a 43 percent increase in participation this year. Panther Creek residents were major participants as we held 30 block parties, getting to visit with neighbors new and old and meeting the law enforcement teams that help protect us. We, the citizens of The Woodlands, are our own first line of defense, so remember to report suspicious activities that you see by calling 281-354-5511 and let your highly trained deputies take it from there. To meet the deputies who patrol your streets in person, attend any of our monthly village association meetings that are held the second Thursday of the month. See page 19.
We had a full bus of residents join the party as we were comfortably driven to watch the Houston Astros play the New York Yankees on our annual fall sports outing. The Astros were even winning, well if only for the first part of the game.
Volunteers from across Panther Creek also turned out to make the Fall Flea Market event a big success. Residents and vendors from across the state brought thousands of bargains for Woodlands residents to browse and buy.
Start stringing those Christmas lights and putting up the decorations.
It is time again for the Panther Creek Village Association Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest. Every resident of the village is automatically entered. You have two categories in which to win, the Neighborhood category and the Individual Home Category. Our expert judges will be coming by early to mid-December to marvel at your spirit and creativity. After scoring and comparing their picks, they will be awarding prizes and recognition. To give everyone a real chance, last year’s winners are not eligible to win this year. Panther Creek is not only the festive place to be in December, but it is also the caring place. In cooperation with Interfaith, we will identify a Panther Creek family to receive a little extra help at this time of year as we thoughtfully select and carefully wrap gifts to brighten their holiday. Your board members will also be visiting various senior living centers to distribute decorations and gifts.
Your Panther Creek Village Association meets the second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in The Woodlands Township building at 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. Come learn about community activities and share your concerns and ideas. You can also visit us online at www.PantherCreekVillageAssociation.org.

mistletoe the connection
By Kathie Gilmore Herrick
Mistletoe often goes unnoticed until winter when it can make a deciduous hardwood host appear evergreen.
beyond a kiss
Tis’ the season to think fondly of mistletoe, perhaps recalling— in keeping with the yuletide tradition— when we connected beneath a sprig and stole a kiss! Mistletoe is intricately connected to the forest ecosystem. Because the plant provides essential food, cover and nesting sites for a broad spectrum of animal life, including birds, bees, butterflies and mammals, it has been characterized as a keystone species.
“A keystone species, is one whose impact on its community or ecosystem is disproportionately large relative to its abundance.”
~ Robert T. Paine, University of Washington, 1969
Since all mistletoes, the American (Phoradendron sp.) included, are partial parasites of trees and shrubs, some view the plant unfavorably. While possessing chlorophyll and capable of manufacturing food via photosynthesis, mistletoe roots invade its host for water and minerals. In fact, the scientific name of the American mistletoe, Phoradendron, means
“thief of tree” in Greek. Spreading slowly, less than two feet per year, ecologists believe the extraordinary benefits to native wildlife in the natural ecosystem far outweigh mistletoe’s reputation in the timber industry as a tree pest.
Numerous animals depend upon mistletoe for their survival. Birds, among them grouse, mourning doves, bluebirds, evening grosbeaks and robins, consume the white berries, transporting the seed from their beaks and in their droppings to new branches or other host trees. The fruit is a winter staple, high in protein for mammals, but highly toxic to humans. The leaves are a forage crop.
For honeybees, a species in decline and valued pollinators, mistletoe flowers provide the first pollen of the season. Mistletoe is also central to a courtship ritual of another kind when the Great Purple Hairstreak butterfly mates in the treetops and lays her eggs on the mistletoe. The leaves ensure food for her larvae to develop into another generation of winged beauties. It is indeed all connected!

JUST DO ONE THING
By Ed Commender
FIRST AID
This month, make sure that you are prepared to give first aid while waiting for an ambulance. An emergency can happen at any time and any place. Many public places have a first aid kit, oxygen, or an AED (automated external defibrillator) to treat people. These items can only save lives if someone knows how to use them. Actions you take in the first few minutes after an injury or other medical incident may save someone’s life.
Choose
One Of The Following Things To Do This Month To Become Better Prepared:
• Know what to do while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.
Call 911 instead of trying to take an injured or ill person to the hospital yourself. It seems like waiting for an ambulance will make it take longer to get help, but ambulance crews can start providing care as soon as they arrive. They can get the patient to hospital quickly, legally and more safely.
1. Stay on the line with 911 and follow emergency instructions.
2. Stay calm and try to keep the patient calm.
3. Don’t move a patient who was injured in an automobile accident or fall, or who was found unconscious.
4. If the patient is cold, cover them with a blanket.
5. Don’t give an injured person anything to eat or drink (unless instructed by the 911 dispatcher).
6. Have someone watch for the ambulance and show the crew how to get to the patient. (This is especially important in an apartment or office building, or if your address is hard to see from the street).
• Make or buy first aid kits for your home and car.
Ready-made first aid kits are available at most department stores or your local American Red Cross chapter. These kits come in a variety of sizes and prices. You can also make your own kit from supplies you probably already have around the house.
Some items that should be included in a basic first aid kit are:
– Adhesive tape
– Antiseptic ointment
– Band-aids (assorted sizes)
– Blanket(s)
– Cold pack(s)
– Disposable gloves
– Gauze pads and roller gauze (assorted sizes)
– Hand sanitizer (liquid or wipes)
– Plastic bags
– Scissors and tweezers
– Small flashlight and extra batteries
– Triangular bandage
• Take training in first aid, CPR, AED or pet first aid.
Helping others in a medical emergency isn’t as hard to learn as you might think. Knowing how to apply a bandage, identify the signs and symptoms of shock, perform CPR or
use an automatic external defibrillator (AED) can save a life.
First responders may not be on the scene immediately. It is up to individuals like you to be ready to help someone who is injured. The person whose life you save may be someone that you love.
Many American Red Cross chapters now offer training in pet first aid. Training may also be available through your local humane society, kennel club or pet store. Check with your veterinarian to see what special items you may need to include in a first aid kit for your pets. If you travel with your pet, or if they are service or hunting animals, you may want to make a travel-sized pet first aid kit as well. Contact your local fire department or American Red Cross chapter to learn what first aid classes are available in your area. Ask your employer if they will sponsor a class for your workplace, or take a class with your family or on your own. Many classes are offered free of charge. Courses may also be offered at your place of worship, school or community organization. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training also includes first aid training.
Remember, emergency preparedness doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. We encourage you to follow the plan throughout the year and to “stay informed and be ready” by following us on the web (www.twcert.com), Facebook or Twitter. Resources are also available at www.do1thing.com.

Beat the traffic lane closures By
Riding Your Bike
By Heather Cherry
There is something in your garage right now that could help you beat the traffic, get more fit and save gas and money! If you live and work in The Woodlands, or if you are just running an errand close to home, consider riding your bike.
Many company dress codes may allow for riding your bike in khakis or exercise pants with a camisole or tank, then putting on your company shirt or making a quick change upon arrival. Consider wrinkle-free skirts or pants, light sweaters, etc., that you could roll up and put in a backpack. Some companies have shower facilities that make bike commuting even more manageable.
The more pleasant temperatures in fall make it even easier. And riding early in the day and late in the afternoon are surprisingly comfortable. Ample shade on most bike paths is also a plus. Check out the pathway map on the Township Web site to plan your route. Be extra aware of car traffic, construction and others using the pathways. And remember to bring insect repellent if needed!
Some moms working at the Township have recently found that it works for them. One working mom said, “I drive my seventh- grader to Knox, park my car in my garage and then jump on my bike. It takes me under 30 minutes! It gives me quiet time and a bit of exercise before I start my work day and begin my busy evening with the kids. It makes me appreciate where I work and live even more!”

Time for Your Annual Sprinkler Check
By Bob Dailey
W.I.S.E. guys check a sprinkler system to make sure it is operating properly.
Now that cooler weather is here, it’s the ideal time for residents to inspect outdoor irrigation systems for problems that may have cropped up during peak usage months. Schedule a free sprinkler system checkup with a licensed irrigation expert through The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency. This program, known as The Woodlands Irrigation System Evaluation (W.I.S.E.), pays for professionals to guide residents through their sprinkler systems and also helps residents evaluate the efficiency of the system. Residents can sign up for this service at The Woodlands Joint Power Agency Web site (www.wjpa.org).
The free evaluation will assist the homeowner to:
• Find and repair minor breaks in sprinkler heads.
• Adjust sprinkler heads for proper zone coverage.
• Check the system for leaks.
• Adjust your controller to conform to the Defined Irrigation Schedule now in effect in The Woodlands.
• Increase outdoor water efficiency through retro-fit devices.
The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency also offers a 50 percent rebate for expenses up to $150 on the purchase of a rain sensor, an ET Smart Controller, a drip irrigation system, rain water harvesting system, or other water-saving device for your irrigation system. Call 855-h2o-SAVE for more information on the rebate.
Some winter chores for your lawn:
• St. Augustine grass goes dormant in the winter. Very little or no irrigation is needed from October to April.
• Use a mulching lawnmower to mulch fallen leaves back into your lawn to provide added nutrition.
• Remove debris from ornamental beds. A quick way to do this is to use a leaf blower, then mulch the debris into the lawn.
• Add good organic mulch to flower beds.

The
Fall
By Katerina Graham
COMPOSTING
Fall is an exciting time of the year to a gardener. Why? Because of all the leaves!
Tomost people these leaves might appear as trash or nuisance, but to the gardener who understands the need to replenish the soil, a bag of leaves is a mine of carbon... Why do we need carbon? The answer: so we can compost! Composting is the deliberate act by humans of facilitating the decay of plant material with the purpose of creating a new type of material that is full of life-giving nutrients. Decomposition, the natural process at work, takes place thanks to bacterial and fungal activity, and it is constantly taking place in nature. Thanks to decomposition, natural areas are not littered with dead animal and old plant matter. Whether it’s a natural or a deliberate process, both soils and plants are the direct beneficiaries of this continuous renewal.

The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department offers compost classes annually, October through March. “When it was time to find help for Dad I made the best decision for all the right reasons.”
“I wanted a caring and friendly environment for Dad, with personal attention and a great quality of life. I found it all right here, where Assisted Living is designed individually for those who need some help with the activities of daily living. People like my Dad. Since he moved in, he’s discovered a renewed sense of energy. I couldn’t ask for anything more – and neither could Dad.”
