TheMaids tagline, “Nobody Outcleans The Maids,” says it all. According to owner German Ochoa, The Maids, a residential cleaning service, does more than just clean off the surface dirt and dust. They clean for health — which is how they can provide the healthiest, most thorough housecleaning ever.
So, what does “the healthiest, most thorough housecleaning” mean?
First, a bonded, insured and highly trained cleaning team cleans each home. A team leader not only works to keep employees on task but also double-checks all work for quality assurance.
Teams clean following a comprehensive cleaning system, the 22-Step Healthy Touch® Deep Cleaning System. The system is
comprised of three main components — state-of-the-art equipment, environmentally preferable products and a systematically engineered cleaning method.
The Maids uses a professional Back Pack Vac with HEPA filtration that can capture up to 99% of all dust and allergens. Then, for the safety and well-being of you and your family, as well as their employees, The Maids
uses environmentally preferable cleaning products. This eliminates any concern of toxic or harsh solutions being used in your home.
With The Maids Home Services, it is about not only what they clean, but also how they clean. Every aspect of The Maids’ system is designed so team members work together to clean a home as efficiently and thoroughly as possible, to ensure quality and guarantee customer satisfaction.
For a free, no-obligation estimate or more information about The Maids Home Services call 832-934-1112 or visit their website at www.maids.com.

OnThursday, november 12, at 7:30 p m , Walk in the Woods nature Lecture Series presents From Crakes to Cranes—Waterbirds of Our Area with Woody Woodrow, wildlife biologist with the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
Representing the smallest of waterbirds, crakes or black rails are only five inches while the whooping crane can stand five feet tall.
Due to their typically large size, waterbirds have a charismatic appeal, according to Mr. Woodrow. “We like water and to be next to water,” he said. “People have a close affinity to waterbirds because we share that love of habitat.”
A forested wetland, The Woodlands provides an attractive environment for many species of waterbirds. According to Mr. Woodrow, waders, such as kingfishers, ducks, loons and white pelicans, and wanderers, such as wood storks, forage in local waterways.
The Woodlands provides prime habitat for waterbirds, great and small. On Thursday, November 12, at 7:30 P M , enjoy a close-up view of the intriguing species that forage and nest in our area with Woody Woodrow, a wildlife biologist with a passion for photography. Photo by Dawn Pando continued on page 12
Waterbirds of Our Area continued from page 10
Surprisingly, the community’s largest body of water, Lake Woodlands, provides only a mediocre habitat for waterbirds. “The bird population is conditional on having water that is the right depth,” Mr. Woodrow explained. A vegetative shoreline and shallow water is ideal— creek bottoms, flood plain, Bear Branch reservoir, isolated woodland ponds and the area’s network of drainage ditches.
“Wading bird populations are most abundant where the distribution of crayfish is highest,” said Mr. Woodrow. “Crayfish, frogs and fish are favored fare for wading birds like the great egret and big blue heron. Smaller birds feed on insects, minnows, larvae or vegetation.”
From reclusive kingfishers to native species that have gone urban, learn more about the waterbirds that breed and forage in our region with Woody Woodrow. The evening is a free program of Community Associations of The Woodlands, held at McCullough Jr. High School, 3800 S. Panther Creek Drive.
Sponsors include The Pineywoods nursery, Waste Management and The Woodlands G.R.e.e.n. For more information, call the environmental Services Department at 281.210.3900 or visit www.thewoodlandsassociations.org, click Environmental Services.
The great egret is a large bird with allwhite plumage that is 32 inches long and has a wingspan of 55 inches. It can be distinguished from other white egrets by its yellow bill and black legs and feet, though the bill may become darker and the lower legs lighter during the breeding season. The great egret feeds in shallow water and drier habitats, feeding mainly on fish, frogs, small mammals and occasionally small birds and reptiles.
Annually, egrets begin looking for nesting and breeding colonies (heronries/rookeries) in tall trees; they prefer to return to an existing site to breed. For the last few years, a colony has been in The Woodlands. Though egrets are beautiful birds, when egrets choose a site in a residential area, it can present problems, such as noise, damage to the vegetation and potential health risks due to their droppings. Fortunately, The Woodlands is verdant with more than 3,000 acres of open space reserves and an 1,800-acre preserve, where the birds are welcome and are viewed for their beauty.
These birds are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act which means that these birds and their young (including eggs) and current active nests cannot be killed or destroyed.

The passing of our friend and colleague Jim Perryman, leaves a vacancy on the Cochran’s Crossing village Association Board that won’t easily be refilled. More than that, his passing leaves an emptiness in the hearts of all who knew and worked with him. For an unprecedented 21 years Jim served the Cochran’s Crossing village Association Board as a tireless worker dedicated to the betterment of the community and to the preservation of its basic principles and covenants. Jim was also a dedicated environmentalist whose work helped protect and preserve the natural beauty and bounty of our lands and forests. What greater tribute can we express for a life that really made a difference than to simply say, “Thanks, Jim Perryman, for making Cochran’s Crossing and The Woodlands a better place to live.”

Meet your Sterling Ridge Board member Todd Bloomfield. Getting the word out – that is where Todd Bloomfield fits in. Todd moved to The Woodlands two years ago from Louisiana. He lives in Montfair with his wife and children and works in The Woodlands for Huntsman. Todd is our public relations committee chairman for Sterling Ridge village
Association. He helps Sterling Ridge communicate with our local Parent Teacher Organizations as well as secures speakers for our monthly meetings. We communicate with the Parent Teacher Organizations to advertise our events as well as to gather interest and support for volunteer efforts that support our scholarship fund. Sterling Ridge village Association hopes to give more money to our local elementary schools this year. Todd is serving as a Sterling Ridge board member for a two-year term. Thanks, Todd, for your service!
Check out our Web site at www.sterling-ridge.org to get more information about current events or to volunteer for events within the village of Sterling Ridge. The Web site also has dates and times for future meetings as well as a listing of speakers for those meetings. Meetings are typically held at 7 p m on the fourth Monday of the month at the Mitchell Library. Check the calendar on the Web site to verify dates, times and locations of meetings.

In the fall of 2007, The Woodlands voters overwhelmingly voted in favor of expanding Town Center Improvement District (TCID) to cover all of The Woodlands, to change the makeup of its Board of Directors to a fully elected board and to authorize the governmental entity to collect an ad valorem property tax. TCID changed its name to The Woodlands Township, and the Community Associations entered into a Transition Agreement that would transfer services and operations to the Township.
Benefits for residents
The Transition Agreement ultimately provides a seamless consolidation of the governmental services provided to residents of The Woodlands into a single, communitywide, governmental organization.
Residents will experience benefits from the transition, including:
• Continuation of quality services and amenities.
• Consolidated operations and one place to call for service.
• One board of directors, fully elected by mid-2010.
• More services funded through sales taxes.
• Tax-deductible property tax.
• Ability for The Woodlands to determine its future governance options.
The Community Associations of The Woodlands, Texas, have ceased billing for the annual assessment fees due on January 1 of each year.
Instead, the services provided to the community will be funded through a new The Woodlands Township Property Tax which was included on the county tax statement residents received from J.R. Moore, Jr., Montgomery County Tax Assessor-Collector, in October 2009. Beginning with the current bill, residents’ 2009 Montgomery County tax bills include
continued from page 3
the new Township ad valorem property tax that will be used to fund 2010 community services in The Woodlands Township. This change will not affect condo association fees or neighborhoods with additional homeowner’s association fees separate from those billed by The Woodlands Community Association, Inc., The Woodlands Association, Inc. or The Woodlands Commercial Owners Association, Inc.
Do you have a transition question?
visit The Woodlands Township Web site at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov and click Ask the Township. Questions may also be sent to The Woodlands Township, 10001 Woodloch Forest Drive, Suite 600, The Woodlands, Texas 77380. Watch for more information about the transition in upcoming issues of this magazine.
1999 Houston and The Woodlands MUDs sign a Moratorium Agreement, which prevents the City of Houston from annexing The Woodlands and prevents The Woodlands from incorporating as a city for at least 12 years.
2000 Community Associations of The Woodlands begin to draft a plan to educate community leaders and residents about existing governance as well as options for future community governance.
2002-06 Joint Ad-Hoc Governance Process Committee and later The Woodlands Governance Steering Committee study and evaluate governance options with resident feedback.
December 7, 2006 City of Houston and The Woodlands announce historic agreement allowing The Woodlands to determine their future as they contribute toward important regional projects.
Spring 2007 Legislation provides the authority to enter into the Regional Participation Agreements (SB 1012) with the City of Houston and the City of Conroe and to establish, with voter approval, a new governance body for The Woodlands (HB 4109).
Fall 2007 Community Associations initiate The Woodlands Decides Committee to provide educational information to residents on the upcoming election.
November 2007 Election
Three propositions pass, authorizing the expansion of the former Town Center Improvement District (TCID) to cover The Woodlands (86 percent in favor), the reorganization of TCID’s Board of Directors to a seven-member residentelected board (86 percent in favor), and to allow the entity to assess an ad valorem property tax (78 percent in favor). TCID changes its name to The Woodlands Township.
January/February 2008 Community Associations and The Woodlands Township unanimously approve the Transition Agreement that outlines the transition of service delivery from the Associations to the Township.
continued on page 24
May 10, 2008 The Woodlands voters elect first five at-large representatives to The Woodlands Township. Six members of the existing Township board continue in office until May 2010.
2008 – 2009 Associations and Township continue to carry out customary roles and responsibilities.
Mid 2009 Township considers budget and capital plan and creates Vision 2034 for consolidated Township operations.
September 2009 Township Board adopts budget and sets property tax levy for The Woodlands at 32.8 cents per $100 assessed value. This replaces the Community Associations assessments.
January 1, 2010 Township assumes full responsibility for Association services.
May 2010 Election Township board transitions to fully resident-elected board with seven members.
May 2014 The Woodlands voters may decide if they want to change the governance structure, including consideration of incorporation.
TSigners to the Transition Agreement were (l to r) The Woodlands Community Association President Jeff Long, The Woodlands Association President and The Woodlands Commercial Owners Association President Joel Deretchin, The Woodlands Township Chairman Nelda Blair, The Woodlands Community Service Corporation Chair and The Woodlands Fire Department President Bruce Tough.

The Woodlands Professional Firefighters Association, along with support from The Woodlands Fire Department, The Woodlands Township and community contributions, collected more than $32,000 in donations by participating in the Fill-theBoot campaign benefitting the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The donations were collected during a three-day effort by
firefighters at various intersections throughout The Woodlands.
One hundred percent of these collections will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association to fund research, medical clinics, support groups and summer camps, as well as financial assistance for the purchase of wheelchairs, leg braces and communication devices.

holidays are such a wonderful and busy time of year! neighbors and friends may stop by with baskets of freshly baked goodies. Parties, shopping and travel mean many of us are often away from home. In the midst of all this joyous activity, it’s important to remember that the holidays are also a busy time for thieves. Here are some tips on how to celebrate safely this holiday season.
• Be alert and aware of what’s going on around you.
• Park in a well-lighted space, and always lock your vehicle.
• If possible, remove shopping bags and gifts from your vehicle. If you must keep them in the vehicle, make sure they are stored in the trunk. never leave personal items such as purses and cell phones in view.
• Keep your purse closed and carry it near your body, not dangling by the straps.
• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; pay with a check or credit card whenever possible.
If you are out for the evening:
• Turn on lights and a radio or Tv so it appears that someone is home.
• Lock all doors and windows when you leave, even it it’s just for a few minutes.
• Turn on your security alarm.
• Don’t display gifts where they can be seen from outside.
If you are traveling:
• Get an automatic timer for your lights.
• Make sure at least one neighbor knows how to reach you. Ask this neighbor to watch your home and park in the driveway from time to time.
• Stop mail and newspaper delivery. newspapers piled up on the driveway are a sure sign that no one is home.
• Request a vacation Watch from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office/ Woodlands Division at 936.442.7797 or Harris County Constable Precinct 4 at 281.376.3472.
On trash collection day:
• Don’t put uncut boxes in the recycling that advertise your new gifts, especially items such as Tvs and computers. Cut up the cardboard first so it is not so easy to see from the street what items are now inside your house.
Beware if a stranger comes to the door
Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts or go door-todoor requesting charitable donations when there is no charity involved. never open the door unless you know who the person is. If you want to donate to a charity, directly contact an organization you know and trust instead.
Take a holiday update
The holidays are a good time to update – or create – your home inventory. Take photos or make videos of valuable items, including Tvs, DvD players, stereo equipment, cameras, jewelry, silver, computers and home office equipment. note descriptions and serial numbers. If your home is burglarized, having a detailed inventory can help identify stolen items and make insurance claims easier to file. Law enforcement recommends engraving your Texas driver’s license number on valuable items. you can borrow an engraving kit for free from the neighborhood Services Department of the Community Associations.
By taking a few simple precautions, you can say, “Bah, humbug!” to crooks and ensure that the holiday is a safe and happy one.
For more information on how you can keep your neighborhood safe during the holidays and throughout the year, including information about vacation Watch, contact Community Associations of The Woodlands, neighborhood Services Department, at 281.210.3800.

~Ralph Waldo EmersonThisyear is tougher for everyone, and that especially includes Interfaith of The Woodlands and the families it serves. Supplies have been unusually depleted, so many children and elderly folks will see a dimmer Christmas season without our help. Join us in helping Interfaith serve our needy neighbors and friends in our community.
What you can do:
• Find a place in your pocketbook and your heart to purchase a child’s toy or comfort item for a senior adult.
• Drop it off at The Blair Law Firm (#7 Grogan’s Park Drive, Redbud Building 3, near Amerigo’s restaurant), drop it off at Interfaith, 4242 Interfaith Way in the village of Panther Creek, or call 281.363.3632 for pickup!
• Do it in november and again in December.
