Holiday Safety Tips

Now is a great time to review holiday safety tips. The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, District 6 and Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 4 hope that these tips will help you to have a safer and more enjoyable holiday season!

Safety At Home

• Lock your doors to your home, vehicles and garage, whether you are at home or away. Remove valuables from your vehicle. Set your alarm, if you have one.

• Avoid making your home look unlived in. If you will be away:

– Sign up for Vacation Watch Montgomery County –www.mocosheriff.com, click on Crime Prevention, then on the Vacation Watch icon, or call 936-442-7797, option 3, if you don’t have Internet access.

Harris County – www.cd4.hctx.net, click on Online Services, then on Vacation Watch; select Creekside (Woodlands) from the drop down list for Contract Name, or call 281-367-3472, if you don’t have Internet access.

– Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to pick up newspapers and packages, as well as notices left by your door.

– Use light timers to make it appear that someone is home.

• Report suspicious activity to law enforcement when it is happening (call the phone numbers above). A person looking in your neighbors’ home windows, trying to open car door handles, going around to the back of an unoccupied home or picking up packages off a porch is suspicious; call

law enforcement when you see it and let law enforcement determine if the person should be there or not.

• Don’t post your vacation plans on social media or leave the information on your answering machine while you are gone.

• Don’t leave a window or garage door cracked, since a burglar may use it to help gain access to your home.

• Lock your backyard gates.

• Don’t open your door to anyone you do not know, including solicitors. Join The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch to get your No Solicitor window decal and find out more about what to do when a solicitor comes to your door.

Safety While Shopping or Away From Home

• When you go shopping, it is much safer to place your packages in the trunk of your vehicle when you leave a store, instead of when you arrive at a store, to help keep a burglar from seeing your packages. Keep all valuables out of sight.

• Lock your vehicle at all times, including while filling your vehicle with gas, to avoid someone taking items out of your vehicle when you aren’t looking.

• Never leave your children or pets unattended in a locked or unlocked vehicle, even for a short time. Don’t leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running.

• Have your keys in your hand before exiting a store or business.

• Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If for some reason you feel uncomfortable leaving a store or business, ask for their security staff to escort you.

• Park in well-lit areas of the parking lot. If the parking lot has angled parking, it is safer to park in the lanes where normal traffic flow is going away from the building. Make a note or take a photo of where you parked your car, including the light pole number, color or name closest to your vehicle. If you should need to call for assistance, provide that information to the dispatcher.

• Avoid carrying large sums of cash when shopping. Take only the checks, cash, credit cards or debit card that you will need.

• Anytime you have to present your I.D. or credit cards, such as at a store or doctor’s office, be sure to get them back before you leave.

Please take time to review and practice these tips. For more crime prevention tips from The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch, call 281-210-3800, email neighbor@ thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov or visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ neighborhoodwatch.

Show Your True Colors at the 3R BAZAAR An America Recycles Day Event!

Did you know America Recycles Day began as Texas Recycles Day in 1994? Join The Woodlands Township at the 3R Bazaar, Saturday, November 14, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 8203 Millennium Forest Drive and celebrate Green as the New Red, White and Blue! According to organizers, America Recycles Day “is one day to educate, one day to motivate and one day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year.”

RE-CYCLE

Attendees can support their village by bringing old toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes and floss containers for the new Village Challenge, the Terracycle Oral Care Brigade®! The 3R Bazaar is also the annual opportunity to recycle single-use alkaline batteries and learn about the effort to establish a comprehensive battery recycling solution. And yes, even flip flops can have a new life! Bring yours to recycle.

Learn how to get recycling right! Booth displays will dispel the mysteries behind plastic bag recycling, textile recovery, labeling and recycling on the go. Explore the next recycling frontiers as well as opportunities for schools and single and multi-family homes.

For the convenience of residents, Southern Shred will provide on-site shredding of personal papers and documents. The suggested donation of five canned goods or $5 per bank box or bag will benefit Interfaith Food Pantry.

RE-PURPOSE

Booths will also demonstrate how to repurpose discards into decorative items and wearable art. Bring an old T-shirt and learn how to create fashion accessories and dog toys at the No-Sew Boutique.

Discover the ingenuity of Creekside Forest Elementary students who are creating art mosaics with plastic caps!

RE-USE

The annual event offers expanded collection opportunities to reuse and recycle commodities beyond curbside and highlights local businesses and charitable organizations that recycle more. Residents are invited to donate clothing and textiles to The Salvation Army and eyeglasses to the Lions Recycle for Sight program.

RE-BUY

See how “what’s old becomes new again” at the award-winning Buy Recycled Boutique. “The 3R Bazaar is unique among America Recycles Day events because it goes beyond recycling collections,” notes Lynne Aldrich, manager of Environmental Services for The Woodlands Township. Now in its 15th year, the Township’s partnership with The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. features products created from recycled or sustainable materials. Gleaned from studios of artisans and small manufacturers, the trunk show offers innovative and trendy gift items. From Green Toys™ to jewelry, view the current lines from new and favorite manufacturers. All products are made in the United States or certified Fair Trade. Every product has a story.

The 3R Bazaar is brought to you by The Woodlands Township with sponsorship from The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N., The Woodlands Development Company, H-E-B and Waste Management. Contact the Township’s Environmental Services Department at 281-210-3800 or visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov for details.

The leaves of this gem “shine” in autumn but the coarse, deep venation and broad shape of the foliage makes swamp chestnut oak distinguishable in other seasons as well. It is a priceless addition to a landscape for its wildlife value. Besides providing excellent cover and acorns as food, the leaves are a larval source for at least four species of butterflies. NEWS FROM THE VILLAGES OF THE WOODLANDS

Alden Bridge

November is the traditional month for being thankful, so we’d like to honor everyone who has donated their valuable time, talents, goods and services this year in support of the Alden Bridge Village Association. So many people and organizations deserve recognition for assisting with our events and programs, and thanks to everyone who attended our events. Thanks to all!

Please don’t forget to vote in The Woodlands Township election November 3, 2015. Three director positions will be filled based on your votes.

The monthly Alden Bridge Village Association board/residents’ meeting is scheduled for the second Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. No guest speaker has been confirmed at this writing, so please see our newsletter and Facebook page for an announcement closer to the meeting date. Please join us!

Please help us collect for this year’s Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. Village Challenge. We’re recycling any brand of dental care materials, including empty toothpaste tubes/caps, floss containers, toothbrushes, and exterior packaging for these items. The village that collects the most wins. At the same time, you can recycle batteries and donate clothing for the Salvation Army and used eyeglasses for the Lions Club.

We finished our Yard of the Month program with the awarding of the Spookiest House in the Village. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners and thanks to everyone who provided nominations! We’ll begin again next April. Next month we’ll have the annual Holiday Lighting and Decorating contest, and there should be plenty of lights and decorations in the stores right now to help you prepare! We always have beautiful decorations in our village.

We’re always grateful for additions to our electronic mailing list for village news. Please send your email address to info@aldenbridge.org. Your address will not be shared and will be used only to distribute village news. Also please visit our website, www.aldenbridge.org, which is updated continuously, and connect with us on Facebook!

Don’t forget to take advantage of the holiday festivities that begin this month. The Lighting of the Doves and International Winter on the Waterway events will be held November 21 from 3 to 9 p.m. at Town Green Park. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

College Park

College Park welcomed our newest board member, Cherish Cahoon, at the August meeting. We also said goodbye to board members Scott and Cori Singletary and with thanks for their many years of serving the community of College Park. Scott served as vice president for many years and Cori often chaired neighborhood events.

College Park will participate in the Holiday Lighting Contest. Board members plan to be out and about in the neighborhoods of College Park in the early part of December to find the best light display in our village. Start planning and get out your holiday decorations soon. See page 20.

Township elections are this month, but remember that the elections for the village association representatives are in February. Filing begins in December for positions on the Residential Design Review Committee and the College Park Village Association board. Plus, we currently have two board member positions open if you are an interested resident. For filing information, go to The Woodlands Township website in early January.

We hope you have been saving your oral care packaging and saving empty

toothpaste tubes. Our next Village Challenge is to save toothpaste tubes and caps, old toothbrushes, outer packaging for these items and empty floss containers. How many of these items can your family recycle? Start saving and stay tuned for more details on this new recycling challenge.

Grogan’s Mill

The Grogan’s Mill Village Association’s mission is to serve as a liaison to the residents of Grogan’s Mill Village and The Woodlands Township and other governmental entities for the purpose of enhancing the quality of life of the residents of the Village of Grogan’s Mill. It includes establishing two-way communications through proactive leadership. Our vision is that Grogan’s Mill Village will be a well-maintained village that represents the original vision for The Woodlands. The village association’s values are to:

• Maintain a natural environment with quality parks and pathways

• Promote a safe environment

• Enhance property values by encouraging pride in residences

• Be active in the growth of the Grogan’s Mill Village Center

• Encourage involved, informed residents

It has come to our attention that a few homeowners, either for financial reasons, health issues, or lack of interest, have not been maintaining their properties up to neighborhood standards and the association’s values. If you are aware of such a property, please bring it to our attention so that we may make an effort to work with the homeowner and The Woodlands Township to correct the problem.

Work continues on developing an aging-in place community in Grogan’s Mill and surrounding areas. We congratulate Bruce Cunningham on

Indian Springs

Warm wishes to all for a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. The Indian Springs Village Association gives thanks for all those who have served and continue to serve in our community. We welcome residents to attend our monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at the Township offices.

Indian Springs will once again be participating in The Woodlands annual Holiday Lighting and Decorating contest. See page 7 for more information. Judges will be in the area December 4 to 6, 2015. They will be awarding prizes for Best House and Best Neighborhood (or group of homes). Winners will be contacted on December 8 and will be announced on our website, www.indianspringsvillage.com.

Panther Creek

Volunteers from across Panther Creek turned out in October to make the Fall Flea Market event a big success. Residents

and vendors from across the state brought thousands of bargains for Woodlands residents to browse through and buy.

Before you know it, it will be time to start stringing those Christmas lights and putting up the decorations. It is time again for the Panther Creek Village Association Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest. Every resident of the village is automatically entered. You have two categories in which to win—the Neighborhood category and the Individual Home Category. Our expert judges will be coming by in December to marvel at your spirit and creativity. After scoring and comparing their picks, they will be awarding prizes and recognition. To give everyone a real chance, last year’s winners are not eligible to win this year.

Panther Creek is not only the festive place to be in December, but it is also the caring place. In cooperation with Interfaith, we will identify a Panther Creek family to receive a little extra help at this time of year as we thoughtfully select and carefully gift wrap items to brighten their holiday. Your board members will also be visiting various senior living centers to distribute decorations and gifts. You are invited to bring a gift to the fifth annual Toys for Tots Christmas Party 2015, hosted by our County Commissioner, James Noack. Call 281-367-3977 for details.

If you are going to be gone for a few days during the upcoming holiday season, you can have the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputies give your home special attention while you are gone for two to 30 days. Since the program began years ago, no home on the Vacation Watch List has been broken into while the residents were gone. How often do you see a 100-percent effective anti-crime program? Way to go, deputies! Take advantage of this free service by filling out the form on the Crime continued on page 20

We hope you were able to attend our ninth annual Sterling Ridge Challenge and Festival last month. We want to give a big shout out to our major sponsors of the event, which included platinum sponsor Patrick Graham State Farm, gold sponsor Kroger grocery store, and bronze sponsors The Woodlands Development Company and Ivan Arjona RE/MAX The Woodlands and Spring. Of course, this special event couldn’t be held each year without all the support of our wonderful volunteers and the many other local

businesses that contributed their resources.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s time to dust off those holiday decorations and enter Sterling Ridge’s annual Holiday Lighting Contest sponsored by your Sterling Ridge Village Association. Winners will be awarded for Best Home and Best Neighborhood. Judging will start as early as December, so be sure to have your lights on each night between 6 and 10 p.m. Last year’s winning neighborhood was Player Vista. Can your neighborhood string together a victory this holiday season?

A reminder to please drive safely through our beautiful neighborhoods, especially with daylight saving time having ended at the start of this month. With sunset an hour earlier, be on the alert for pedestrians, in particular teens coming home from after-school activities that may now end at dusk.

Join in the fun of the annual Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest! Each village association coordinates their own contest, including dates and publicity, with support from The Woodlands Township and The Woodlands Fire Department. There are usually two categories: Best Home in the village and Best Neighborhood in the village. A neighborhood is broadly defined as a few homes located in close proximity, or an entire cul-de-sac or subdivision. Best Home prizes include a yard sign and plaque. A yard sign and Ice Rink passes will be awarded to Best Neighborhood. Members of each village association serve as contest judges. The selection of winners is left to the sole discretion of the judges.

Please check your village association’s website for more details about your respective village.

COMPOSTING: A Hidden Treasure

Acompost bin is one of the most valuable tools you can add to your property. Composting is a natural process that turns organic matter into a rich, dark substance (compost or humus). Grass clippings, leaves, vegetable scraps, egg shells, and shredded paper are examples.

Composting saves time and money. Rather than bagging leaves and yard waste, add them to your compost bin. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that over four pounds of waste is produced daily per person. Composting supports the production of a rich soil amendment while reducing the amount of yard and food waste. Adding compost to the soil saves water, reduces fertilizing costs and increases plant and soil health.

Compost has unique properties that benefit soil: improving fertility, structure, water-holding capacity, reducing erosion and irrigation runoff, and decreasing pathogens, insects and weeds. Sprinkling about one inch of compost on your lawn in the fall and spring helps to maintain a dense mat of grass roots that prevents the spread of weeds, improves the soil and decreases the amount of water required by your lawn. In the garden, compost also cools the soil and provides a fine covering for seeds. Starting seeds in compost is an economical method of growing your own garden vegetables. Container plants benefit from a layer of compost. New plants can be planted directly into compost.

To learn how to make your own compost, attend one of the composting classes offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 7, or December 5, 2015, and Saturday, January 2, February 6, or March 5, 2016. Classes are held at The Woodlands Township Parks and Environmental Services Department, 8203 Millennium Forest, The Woodlands, 77381. Compost bins are available for sale at a reduced price for class participants.

EMERGENCY SUPPLIES

Any emergency is easier to handle when you’ve prepared ahead of time. Put together an emergency kit with important items to keep at home and a Go Bag with items you will need in a disaster. Your Go Bag can be part of your emergency kit, just make sure it is in a bag or easy-to-carry container and that it is easy to get to.

www.facebook.com/TheWoodlandsCERT

Items for your Go Bag:

• Battery-powered radio and extra batteries

• Flashlight with extra batteries

• Lightweight blankets

• Emergency information, including insurance policies

• A list of medications, correct dosage and doctor’s names

• Personal items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, extra glasses, etc.

• First aid kit

• Whistle

• Change of clothing

• Nonperishable snacks

• Books, cards or magazines to pass the time

www.twitter.com/WoodlandsCERT

Additional items for your Go Bag:

For infants and children:

– Baby formula and food

– Diapers

– Baby wipes

– Blanket or toy

For medical conditions:

– Empty pill bottle(s) or a list of current meds (Make sure you update your Go Bag when your medications change)

– Your doctor’s phone number

For pets:

– Pet food and water

– Collar with ID tags

– Pet medication(s)

– Pet carriers and leashes

www.pinterest.com/twcert

– Medical records from vet

– Photos of your pet

– Microchip information

Create an emergency supply kit for your pet, your car and your workplace or school.

If your office or school does not have an emergency kit, offer to help make one. The kit should include:

• First aid supplies

• Flashlights or light sticks

• Building emergency procedures

• Building maps showing evacuation and shelter areas

• Pens or pencils

• Signs with the words “Need Help” and “All Clear”

• Clipboard with class/staff names

Stash some cash in case ATMs and credit card machines are not useable in a disaster. ATM machines may not work. Grocery stores and other businesses may not be able to accept your credit or debit card. Cash could be the only acceptable means to make a purchase. Some experts say you should have at minimum $150 in cash stashed away. Realizing this may not be possible for everyone, so any amount is good to start with. Take $1 a week and place it in an envelope in your emergency kit. In just a little time, you will have some cash stashed away for use in emergencies.

2016 DADDY DAUGHTER DINNER DANCE GOES

HOLLYWOOD GLAM

“The (2015) event was great and gets better each year…thanks!”
“Thank you for continuing this tradition. My daughter and I look forward to it every year.”

For 16 years, the Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance has been a tradition that brings fathers and daughters together for a night of fun, games, and dancing. This is a great opportunity for some special time together before Valentine’s Day weekend. This year’s event takes place from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 2016, at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott. This tradition has created lasting memories for dads and daughters, and this year’s theme plays up the fantasy of movie star lifestyles on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Now in its 17th year, The Woodlands Township is aiming to bring dads and daughters together for a show-stopping night on the red carpet to pose for photos and dance the night away.

The event is open to all ages and will have games and activities in the Hollywood Glam theme. Every daughter will receive a special gift and prizes. For large groups of dads and daughters who want to all sit together at the same table, it is recommended to reserve a table for 10. Assigned seating can also be requested during registration. The best thing about memories is making them—and the 17th Annual Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance can give dads and daughters a lifetime of unforgettable memories!

Registration for this event opens November 9, 2015, and ticket prices are $125/pair and $50 for each additional sibling, until January 11, 2016. After January 11, 2016, the price will increase to $150/pair and $55 for each additional sibling. This event does fill up quickly, so those attending should register as soon as possible. Reservations for a table of 10 are an additional $50 per table.

26 THE WOODLANDS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2015
Celebrating its 17th year, the extremely popular Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance will celebrate a Hollywood Glam theme for 2016.

HURRICANE SEASON WRAP-UP

Although hurricane season officially ends in November, and this year has been particularly quiet along the Gulf Coast, it’s always necessary to be prepared for any emergency that may arise. Residents of The Woodlands are reminded that emergency information specific to The Woodlands can be found on K-STAR/KVST 99.7 FM on your radio dial.

Complete emergency information and important phone numbers can also be found on the Township website at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.

10 REASONS

NOT TO PLANT A

WINTER LAWN

As St. Augustine grass goes dormant in the fall, many homeowners overseed their lawns with winter rye. While winter rye does add a lush greenness to an otherwise dull lawn, homeowners may want to rethink this habit.

1. Save water.

Winter rye needs watering three times a day for the seed to germinate. Once established, ryegrass needs watering every three to four days. Dormant St. Augustine needs little or no water.

2. Save money.

In The Woodlands areas served by The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency (WJPA), annual sewer rates are determined by the amount of water used during the winter months of December, January and February. This is typically when the least amount of water is used. The watering requirements for winter rye increases the amount of water used dung that period, thus raising sewer bills for the rest of the year. Additional costs include mowing, labor and cost of seed.

3. Prevent fungal diseases. Although damage from take-all patch and brown patch becomes evident in late spring and summer, these diseases actually attack St. Augustine in the winter. Other fungal diseases like rust and

powdery mildew are common in winter rye. Winter rye seed may be infected with one or more of these fungal diseases. Irrigation during the winter actually encourages these to infect and damage the lawn.

4. Save on fertilizers. St. Augustine does not require fertilization in the winter. Winter rye usually does.

5. Prevent pests from infecting St. Augustine. Rye grass attracts army worms, wireworms and aphids, all of which can wreak havoc with St. Augustine. Many of these insects can overwinter in the topsoil and return in spring to re-infest the lawn.

6. No need to scalp lawns. Planting winter rye usually means scalping the lawn first. The problem here is that St. Augustine should NEVER be scalped. St. Augustine spreads by above-ground stolons. Scalping severely damages the plant.

7. Decrease noise pollution. While some enjoy the droning of mowers and blowers, these noises

may not be the most welcome sound while sitting in the backyard on a mild winter day.

8. Preserve the quality of water.

We don’t live in a vacuum. Foregoing the planting of winter rye means less fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides will be used. A significant portion of water pollution of our streams and waterways comes from runoff of these products.

9. Give your St. Augustine a break!

Overseeding with winter rye can be very stressful for St. Augustine. Scalping the lawn to plant ryegrass stresses it. In spring, rye competes with St. Augustine for water and nutrients, further weakening it.

10. Save time and frustration. Seed germination problems, diseases, irrigation, fertilizing, noise, stress to the grass and to the homeowner are additional reasons to forego winter rye.
