“The part can never be well unless the whole is well.”–Plato
Traditional Western medicine and its doctors are the finest in the world for dealing with acute care such as the diagnosis and treatment of trauma or short-duration illnesses in need of urgent care– for example, a traumatic car accident, appendicitis or a broken leg. For such harrowing situations, I want traditional medicine in my corner!
However in order to stave off chronic problems or diseases, to better control or even reverse disease states and debilitation, functional medicine is better suited for developing and maintaining a higher quality of life, youth and vitality through the aging process, well into one’s senior years. It is better suited to train people in the art and science of wellness and self-healing.
Functional medicine is personally tailored medicine. It deals with primary prevention and underlying causes of chronic disease rather than simply removing or masking symptoms once they arise.
Functional medicine emphasizes true healing, treatment of the person rather than managing a disease. It is a partnership of joint responsibility between doctor and patient. The patient is motivated and mentored to health by
the physician. It embraces the most current science in diagnosing early abnormalities that eventually lead to chronic illness.
Functional medicine uses botanicals, nutritional supplementation and natural hormone replacement rather than pharmaceutical agents to treat the patients and their deficiencies. Many traditional pharmaceutical agents can cause nutrient depletion and high levels of stress on the body. Under the influence of functional medicine, “old age” is not what it used to be; anti-aging is now a science, and optimized living is the “new normal” for people of every age.
In light of these points, I view functional medicine as a complement to traditional medicine and not an alternative. Systems of health protection should work together where possible. One approach cannot serve all of “heaven and earth.”
Chronic disease, as a rule, is slow to develop. Examples are diabetes, cardiovascular damage, hypertension, low thyroid, cancer, mental illness, autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, and back problems. Longterm predictions for such chronic diseases keep rising because the physical, emotional,
and mental effects of stress are overwhelming us. This stress comes from poor diet, a toxic environment, drugs, accidents, nervous system impairments, emotional reactions to life, mental overload, lack of exercise, and insufficient sleep. Even falling in love is stressful!
Functional medicine works to keep you from becoming a high-risk disease candidate in the first place. The rule is simple: Prevent disease states from developing now so there’s nothing to treat later.
Most patients at the age of 30 start to experience a health decline. If you already happen to be riding this roller coaster, now is the time to start reversing the accumulated stress that is preventing your body from healing itself. This is very different from suppressing disease signs or symptoms with drugs, as is done with statins or thyroid medications to make lab measurements look better and to make their health appear better than it really is.
Dr. Minni Malhotra MD, FAARM, is a Functional Medicine practitioner. She is Board Certified in Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine as well as Family Medicine. She has been practicing traditional medicine for over twenty years. Her wellness practice includes nutrition, anti-aging, hormone balancing, fitness, appearance/body rejuvenation, and permanent weight management. She is the clinical director of Anchor Wellness Center in The Woodlands.

Using the Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan as its guide, The Woodlands Township prepares an annual budget and five-year plan in preparation for setting the property tax rate each year. A number of budget planning workshops and meetings were held in August to review and discuss the proposed budget for next year.
The Township views its planning and operational activities in a strategic manner. Accordingly, each year’s budget is prepared with the goal of achieving certain key objectives, including:
• Develop a budget and financial plan that meets the short-term and long-term needs of the Township.
• Continue to provide high-quality, cost-effective services and amenities.
• Provide enhancements to services as needed and appropriate.
• Maintain and replace capital assets and facilities as necessary.
• Create financial flexibility for changing conditions and opportunities.
Through sound fiscal management, the Township has positioned itself well to cope with growth, create a positive atmosphere for economic development, and provide flexibility on budgetary issues. The Township continues to balance revenues and expenditures, maintain or enhance services, have an excellent bond rating and low debt per capita ratio, and maintain appropriate levels of operating, capital replacement, economic development and debt service reserves.

Hello again from Alden Bridge! September is usually one of our hottest months, and you can continue to keep cool in our community pools for a while longer. In our village, Lakeside Pool, next to Buckalew Elementary, will be open on weekends through September 25, 2016.
The monthly Alden Bridge Village Association board meeting will be held Tuesday, September 13, 2016, 7 p.m. at The Woodlands Township Town Hall, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. We won’t have a guest speaker that night, but save the date for Dr. Ed Robb, chairman of The Woodlands Township Board, October 11, 2016, and Dr. Don Stockton, superintendent of Conroe Independent School District, November 8. Residents are encouraged to attend our meetings. Please bring us your questions, your praise and your problems! Stop by and say hello to our newest area representatives — Paul Phelps, John Robertson, Greg Sherlock and Carey Yeager. You can also send your concerns to info@aldenbridge.org.
We’ve awarded our last Yard of the Month winner for 2016. Dave McFadden and John Rubalcaba (above) of Wren’s Song Place were honored as of this writing. However, you don’t get off that easily. At the end of October, we’ll award the Spookiest House (best Halloween decorations) and, before you know it, it will be time to look for the best holiday decorations in our village.
Volunteers will be needed to represent Alden Bridge at The Woodlands
Fall Flea Market. All village associations share in the profits if we meet our quota of volunteers, and our share goes directly to our scholarship fund. Please contact info@aldenbridge.org for additional information. We don’t have the date yet, but this is a Saturday morning event. It still gives you all afternoon for your own use, plus you get first look at all the goodies being offered for sale!
There’s a slim chance that we might have a few tickets left for the bus-to-theball-game outing, Saturday, September 24, 2016, so contact info@aldenbridge.org if you’re interested in joining us. Tickets are $22 each and that covers admission to Minute Maid Park and a roundtrip bus ride from our village center. What a deal! The Astros will be playing the LA Angels that evening.
We continue to publish our monthly electronic newsletter of village news. Please send your email address to info@aldenbridge.org to join the mailing list. We won’t share your email address; it will be used only to distribute news about Alden Bridge. You can also find us on Facebook and at our website, www.aldenbridge.org.
Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend and a September to remember!

Did the summer go by fast for you?
It did for the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association. Not long ago, we were celebrating the start of summer with our annual pool party. Of course, attendance at the pool party was down due to some light rain storms. We may have thought they were a bother, but by mid-summer we were wishing they would come back on a reasonable basis.
And now, we are giving notice that our fall festival will be held October 16, 2016, at Shadowbend Park. This year, the fall festival features even greater and more
games sure to appeal to all ages, food from Kroger, and support from Rotary Interact Clubs representing area high schools. Jennifer Graff, Dabney Wisenbaker, Brian Creighton, Steve Perry, and Stuart Schroeder have been significantly involved in the festival planning.
Certainly, the flooding earlier this year was not reasonable. In fact, it was greater than a 100-year flood level. Some of the flooded homes and nonresidential structures were in the Cochran’s Crossing area. As mentioned last month, to give Cochran’s Crossing residents a chance to have their questions answered, we scheduled Jim Stinson, general manager of The Woodlands Joint Power Agency, to meet with the board and residents.
Jim did a very effective update. That 100-year flood benchmark actually means there is a one percent chance in any year of exceeding the capacity of the drainage system. The floods this year did exceed the 100-year mark. For example, at one point water reached 3-feet above the bridge on Kuykendahl heading toward Creekside. As a result, an intense review was carried out, including The Woodlands Joint Power Agency, Mud Districts, and the Township. Priorities were assigned and, where possible, quick action taken. Township Director Mike Bass also reported that the effect of the Dell Webb construction north of Research Forest has been closely reviewed. The developers have designed a plan with retention ponds that should successfully manage the drainage.
Also during the summer, Cochran’s Crossing was represented in the Fourth Tom Buffa and Don Wisenbaker carried the banner for Cochran’s Crossing in the Fourth of July parade.
of July parade. Marching in the parade were board members and members of their families as well as other Cochran’s Crossing residents. Also marching with us were visitors from San Antonio and Iowa. The overall parade went smoothly and seems to grow each year. It is partially due to careful planning. For the second year, Cochran’s Crossing Village Association President Stuart Schroeder was in charge of staging the event.
The board also supported a community spirit event that featured a bike rodeo in Capstone. In addition, National Night Out parties were encouraged beginning this year in August.
Cochran’s Crossing Vice President Brandon Creighton has been working to coordinate an upgrade and expand the Facebook page. President Schroeder has been active on Facebook, and followers have increased significantly. Board Member Beverly Fennessy has taken on the task of keeping our communications up to date. If you have something you believe will be of interest to other Cochran’s Crossing residents, contact Beverly at bfennessy1@hotmail.com
Remember, board meetings are open to all. Typically, board meetings are the fourth Tuesday of every month (except December) at 7 p.m. in the Township meeting rooms. However, the October meeting date has changed to Tuesday, October 11, 2016.
Submitted by Gary ConwellAt our monthly meeting in July, one of our board members asked Deputy Jason Hopper of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office just what it means to request a Vacation Watch of one’s home. He explained that an officer during each of three shifts over a 24-hour period is assigned to check on each home requesting a watch. Daily, the residence is checked, including doors, backyard and driveway
area. This is a very nice service that our officers provide. Next time you are out of town, request a Vacation Watch for your home. It is also prudent to ask neighbors to report any suspicious activity. Homeowners should cancel newspaper delivery and mail service when gone for extended periods. We are also reminded to lock vehicles and remove any items of value.
Next month, we will host the Halloween Spooktacular during the afternoon of Saturday, October 29, 2016, in Harper’s Landing Park. This is a favorite event for residents of College Park Village. It includes games, a Halloween costume contest, inflatable, and the highlight is the Trick or Treat Trail.
We continue to remind our residents to save oral care packaging and to recycle old toothbrushes for the Oral Care Village Challenge in November during the America Recycles celebration. We would also like our College Park families to save the date of March 25, 2017, and plan to participate with our village in the annual Earth Day GreenUp. More information will be forthcoming about this familyoriented event.

We are pleased to announce that the winner for our June Yard of the
Month is Larry Ainsworth of Ellwood Street in Grogan’s Mill Village. After retiring from the navy and ExxonMobile, Larry’s passion for gardening developed to become his hobby. He does all of the work himself, and he picks the native plants that thrive in our climate and soil. He transplanted one smallish agave plant from his parent’s home in Kingsville, Texas, when he moved to The Woodlands in 1997 and let it multiply into the four huge well-kept plants that line his front yard. The angry spikes of soft blue-green color are like a friendly fortress. Larry also has many cactuses and succulents and other interesting, native plants in his front garden, including Spanish daggers. Both sides of the house feature fragrant archways covered with star jasmine. There are a few knock out roses for a pop of red color. Larry generously donated his $50 Randall’s gift certificate to the Conroe Animal Shelter.
With the hot summer days soon coming to an end, there is always something new at The Woodlands Farmer’s Market. The farmer’s market is held every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until noon, rain or shine, at the Grogan’s Mill Shopping Center. There are over 40 active vendors selling fresh vegetables, meats, seafood from the Gulf, coffee, breads, honey, salad dressings, gifts, Mexican foods, and much more — all locally produced or packaged. Vendors scheduled to set up are listed on our website at www.grogansmillvillage.com, where you can also sign up for our weekly e-blast of what’s coming each Saturday.

I regret to report that longtime village association board member, Mary Bootz, unexpectedly passed away in July. Her dedication and service to Panther Creek residents will be sorely missed. Mary was a great organizer of many village events, including the Flag Day Picnic, the flea market, Christmas gifts for seniors, the annual board dinner, our yearly trip to watch the Astros, and much more. She was truly an irreplaceable person. Our prayers are with her husband, Bill.
Summer may finally be winding down, but the residents of Panther Creek are winding up for an event-filled fall. Our annual outing to watch the Astros will be held September 23, 2016. Hurry, there are only a few seats left, so call Hartley Mackintosh at 281-367-7222 for tickets. One low price includes game tickets and a custom coach ride to and from the ballpark.
Do you use car seats for children or grandchildren in your car? Be sure you are correctly securing those seats. Certified technicians will check the installation of your car seats for free, Saturday, October 1, 2016, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the YMCA parking lot, 6464 Creekside Forest Drive.
The fall flea market is also fast approaching, so check www. woodlandsfleamarket.org for the semiannual event date and time. Twice a year, buyers, sellers, browsers and bargain hunters flock from near and far to the covered garage between The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and the Waterway Marriott for this event. Whether you are looking for that unique piece of furniture, a rare craft find, or are simply getting an early start on your Christmas shopping, don’t miss the fun.
Panther Creek residents were leaders again this August for holding National Night Out neighborhood parties. This is a great way to meet new neighbors and work with each other to promote neighborhood safety and the real hometown feeling that The Woodlands is famous for. If you missed it, watch for next year’s event.
Whether it’s joining in at events like the flea market, National Night Out and the safety expo or volunteering to be a Neighborhood Watch coordinator, there is a place for you to be part of it all. Every resident of Panther Creek is invited to our monthly board meetings to hear reports about public safety, parks, events and much more. It is a great place to find out the best resources for solutions to problems that are of concern to you. We are easy to find online, Facebook or Twitter, and by subscribing to our free newsletter. Check us out at www.panthercreekvillageassociation.org.

All the inner Bobby Flay chefs in Sterling Ridge are in final preparations for our 10th Annual Sterling Ridge Village BBQ Challenge and Kids Festival.
Resident teams from Sterling Ridge neighborhoods will compete for trophies and bragging rights Saturday, September, 24, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Attendees can enjoy barbecue samples from the beef brisket, ribs and pork provided to the teams by the Sterling Ridge Village Association.
This event at Cranebrook Park, 11800 Crane Brooke Drive next to Coulson Tough Elementary School, is very popular and offers plenty for the entire family to do. Enjoy activities ranging from a rock wall and bounce houses to face painting. Last year, we drew nearly 2,000 people to the BBQ Challenge and Kids Festival.
We are still looking for local business sponsors with opportunities ranging from $150 to $1,000. Each sponsor can set up a booth! Your sponsorship will help the association pay for the event, give you an opportunity to reach out to prospective customers, and help us provide grants to local elementary school PTOs. Please contact K. Shaw at klynda@gmail.com for more sponsorship information.

You understand the reason for water awareness and conservation. You are diligently following the Defined Irrigation Schedule adopted in 2013 for the 10 Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs) served by The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency. You receive the The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency’s weekly irrigation recommendations, and you want to follow those, too. If you don’t receive the weekly email, you can sign up at wjpa.org. But, the question remains: How long should I water to put one inch of water on my lawn? How long will it take to put a half of an inch? After all, water pressure may vary, different types of sprinkler and rotor heads put out different volumes of water, and other factors may contribute to variations from household to household.
There are some sophisticated logarithms available, but unless you are an engineer, you might have trouble applying them. Don’t despair. There is an easy way to find out how much you are watering.
• Evenly space six or more straightsided food containers (tuna cans, cat food cans, even small rain gauges) across a zone.
• Run your sprinkler system for 15 minutes.
• Measure the water in each can with a ruler.
• Add up all the measurements and divide that number by the number of cans. This will give you an average amount of water the system is putting out for 15 minutes.
By Bob Dailey• Multiply the average by 2 (15 minutes X 2 = 30 minutes). Round the final number out to the nearest half-inch.
• This will give you an idea of how much water your sprinkler system is emitting in 30 minutes.
How to comply with the recommendations and still have a healthy lawn:
• If the recommendation is one inch per week, water a half of an inch on each of your Defined Irrigation Days.
• If the recommendation is a half of an inch, water a quarter of an inch on each of your Defined Irrigation Days.
• If you have a programmable controller, water each zone twice (cycle and soak method) each prescribed day for the same amount of time as shown in the chart.
Here are some quick tips to help you maintain your property after the long, hot summer:
ü Mow and edge the lawn.
ü Edge, weed and mulch all landscape beds.
ü Repair and replace broken fences.*
ü Remove mildew and algae from brick, siding, fences and driveway. Helpful hint: Periodic cleaning with a power washer containing water only may help prevent mildew and algae growth.
ü Repair and repaint damaged or faded siding.*
ü Remove pine needles, leaves and debris from roof. Remember, removing debris will improve the longevity of the roof, reduce fire hazard and discourage pests.
ü Remove all loose trash, debris and yard waste from the property. Visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/environment and click “Garbage, Recycling and Yard Trimmings” for information about garbage and yard trimming pickup.
ü Make sure trash and recycling carts are stored out of view.**
ü Winterize or turn off irrigation systems. Lean more about water conservation in The Woodlands at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/waterconservation.
*Color changes, roof replacement and fence replacement may need a permit. Please contact The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3800 or visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ covenants for more information.
**All trash, refuse or recycling containers may be placed near the street edge no earlier than one day before waste collection. Emptied containers must be removed from the street, front yard or driveway by the end of the collection day. Containers must be stored on the owner’s property at all times. All trash and refuse containers must be stored out of public view at ground level from the street or alley or adjacent and surrounding properties at all times except during waste collection.

Dead, brown or yellow twigs at the tips of tree branches flagging may be caused by the black twig borer, a tiny nonnative pest introduced from Asia in the 1940s. Spreading into Texas, the black twig borer is capable of infesting many species of healthy trees, including magnolia, red bay, sweet gum, oak and dogwood. This insect was positively identified in The Woodlands by U.S. Forest Service entomologists.
Adult female black twig borers enter healthy trees through pin-hole size openings that are bored into twigs at the tips of branches. The female insect creates an “ambrosia” fungus inside the twig. This causes the twig to die, resulting in noticeable flagging. Larvae then feed on the ambrosia fungus. While the damage created by the black twig borer does not result in tree death, it does affect the appearance of infested trees.
In contrast with a healthy magnolia tree, one infested with the black twig borer displays flagging, a condition where scattered twigs throughout the tree’s crown wilt and die. Black twig borers are less than 2 mm long and almost impossible to see. Their presence may be detected by cutting a dead twig and checking it for tiny borer entry holes (about 1/32-inch in diameter) to confirm presence of the insect. Splitting the twig at the hole will reveal dark staining of the twig interior. Since no chemical control is currently available, the most effective control of black twig borers is pruning affected twigs below the dead area. For more information, please visit the booth, Troubleshooting Trees and learn how to fortify trees from disease and insect damage at Woodlands Landscaping Solutions, September 24, 2016, 9 a.m. to noon, 8203 Millennium Forest Drive. Please see page 12 for more information on this event.
Pollution Prevention is simply source reduction. It is easier to prevent pollution than to clean it up afterward. To observe Pollution Prevention Week, pledge this year to take one action to improve water quality by picking up after your pet, minimizing the use of pesticides and herbicides in your yard, or by choosing compost or organic fertilizers as soil amendments instead of inorganic fertilizer.
For more information about how you can observe Pollution Prevention Week at home, at school and at work, please visit www.p2.org Also, don’t miss Woodlands Landscaping Solutions. Please see page 12 for more information.

Forest dwellers, broad-winged hawks are often sighted along the Texas coast during migration in a swirling flock. This juvenile and adult pair can be easily identified in flight by the thin black outline around short, broad wings. Photo by
In a captivating display, the spectacle of hawk migration plays out on the Texas coast each fall. Kettles of hawks and other raptors, numbering over 52,000 in recent years, follow a topographic path to Smith Point on the Bolivar Peninsula in the journey to Central and South America. The site, not so far from The Woodlands, boasts one of the best hawk watches in the country.
Dr. Susan Heath, avian conservation biologist, shares the wonder and beauty of hawks at the first program in the fall lineup for Walk in the Woods Nature Lecture Series, Thursday, September 8, 2016, 7:30 p.m., hosted in the L.G.I. Lecture Hall at McCullough Junior High School, 3800 S. Panther Creek Drive.
Amazing flyers, hawks are strikingly beautiful. With stunning photography, Dr. Heath will cover 20 species, revealing identifying characteristics, adaptations for survival and natural history.
Breeding in eastern woodlands in summer, broad-winged hawks are not very noticeable until migration when flocks or kettles containing thousands of circling birds appear at Smith Point. It is the single
most numerous species recorded in the Smith Point Hawk Watch, a conservation effort coordinated by Dr. Heath for Gulf Coast Bird Observatory with program partners, Texas Parks and Wildlife and Hawk Watch International.

appeal to nature enthusiasts of all ages. For more information, please call 281-210-3900 or visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx. gov/wildlife. This month, make sure everyone in your household can receive, understand, and act on information received in an emergency. Choose one of the following to become better prepared for an emergency:
Make sure everyone in your household can communicate in a disaster.
The way emergency information is sent out in your community may not work for everyone. If you don’t speak English well, or if you use an assistive device to speak or hear, make a plan now. Make sure you can get and give information in a disaster.
If you think you may not be able to understand emergency information, identify someone (or more than one person) that you can contact for help in
an emergency. Have more than one way to get in touch with them. Keep their contact information with you.
Weather can change very quickly. Severe weather may strike when people are sleeping or unaware of the forecast. This can be deadly if people do not seek a safe shelter. A NOAA emergency alert radio, sometimes called a weather radio, can turn itself on when an emergency alert is issued and warn you day or night.
www.facebook.com/TheWoodlandsCERT
Emergency alert radios can also be used to warn about other emergencies, such as a chemical spill. With the Emergency Alert Radio, you will be warned about dangerous situations in time to take shelter or other safe action.
Every home should have an emergency alert radio, just the way all homes should have a smoke detector. Prices start at about $20 and can be purchased at stores that sell electronics. Most run on batteries or have battery backup.
