NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

GIVE CRIME AND DRUGS

A GOING-AWAY PARTY

The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch invites everyone to join together with their neighbors and public safety personnel on Sunday, October 8, 2017, for a night out against crime.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer. National Night Out creates a sense of community by bringing residents and the public safety agencies that serve The Woodlands Township together under positive circumstances.

Participating in National Night Out since 1990, The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch, public safety and the community have won numerous awards for the way we unite and celebrate our police-community partnerships. On Sunday, October 8, 2017, from 3 to 5 p.m., residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and gather with neighbors. When your neighborhood participates in National Night Out it accomplishes one of the first steps in crime prevention, “neighbor knowing neighbor.”

Hosting a National Night Out party is just the way to bring your neighbors together!

Take this opportunity to send a message that your neighborhood is united against crime. How you celebrate is up to you. It can be as simple as providing popsicles, or as elaborate as playing games and hosting a barbecue. All you need to do is gather your neighbors and participate! Local law enforcement and The Woodlands Fire Department will briefly visit with many of the neighborhoods that register their parties with The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch.

Step #1: Party registration is easy! In 2016, over 100 public safety personnel visited parties throughout The Woodlands. To join in on the fun and receive a public safety visit, your neighborhood must fill out the registration form.

To register, just visit www. thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ nationalnightout. There, you can find the National Night Out Party Guide and frequently asked questions. You can also call The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch at 281-210-3800 and ask for the program specialist assigned to your village.

Even if you want to keep it simple and don’t need supplies or a visit from the various public safety agencies, we still encourage you to register your party. It’s important for us to know how many neighborhoods participate in this community-building event.

Once you’ve filled out the party registration form, a program specialist with Neighborhood Watch will contact you to make sure we have all the details needed.

The final day to register and to receive a public safety visit is Friday, September 22, 2017.

I.D. the Burglar Village Challenge

This fun contest is designed to promote neighborhood cooperation, crime prevention awareness, and to test a person’s skill and accuracy in identifying a suspect. One party from each village will be drawn from the parties registered to participate in the challenge. A “burglar,” along with a “good guy” will be escorted by a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputy to the party chosen from each village. The neighborhood must work together as a team to help identify the burglar! See the National Night Out Party Guide for more information. Theme

HOME POOL SAFETY

There is an abundance of home pools in The Woodlands. If you, your neighbors, or your kids’ friends from school have a home pool, here are some tips to keep in mind for family safety!

What can you do to prevent a home tragedy? Most people teach their children the basic rules of the pool: Never swim alone, don’t run or play dangerous games, and call 9-1-1 in an emergency. But does your family know these important tips?

Lock the Doors and Gates

Babies and toddlers probably cannot open a locked door or gate. But as all parents know, leave one open and they will find it! Teach older kids and teens the importance of shutting and locking gates. Do some research on what might be right for your home, including a four-foot tall secondary fence around the pool that is strongly recommended. Products are available that will even sound an alarm if a pool gate is opened or the water is disturbed.

Keep the Pool Deck Free of Clutter and Toys

Keeping the kids’ floats, balls and other toys put away when not in use dramatically reduces the appeal of the pool to a young child. Place a storage bin outside the pool fence (not against the pool fence) and do your best to keep the toys out of sight when not in use.

“Reach or Throw, Don’t Go!”

You might have heard or seen this one in a public service announcement. Why? People who are actively drowning just want to keep their head out of the water; they really do not care how they do it. Teach your children that if someone is in trouble in the water, give them some THING to grab onto – not some ONE. Large white ring buoys and fiberglass reaching poles are perfect for helping in an emergency if they are kept close to the water.

Sadly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (or CDC) estimates that there are approximately 10 drowning-related deaths in the United States every single day. One in five of those people are under the age of 14. For each child who dies from drowning, another five children receive emergency care for nonfatal submersion injuries. Among children under the age of four years old, more than 50 percent of those drownings occurred in the home pool.*

Limiting access to the pool is the best way to prevent non-swimmers from getting hurt. But overall, the better thing to do for your family’s safety when it comes to a home pool is to teach them all how to swim! Start with basic survival floating and treading water, and build skills from there. If you are interested in more advanced lessons, or just need some help getting these basic moves down, the Township offers private swim lessons in all seasons. See the Fall 2017 Action Guide in this issue for more information.

NEWS FROM THE VILLAGES OF THE WOODLANDS

Alden Bridge

Hello again from Alden Bridge! September is usually one of our hottest months, but you can continue to keep cool in our community pools for a little while longer. In our Village, Lakeside Park pool (next to Buckalew Elementary) will be open on weekends through September 10, 2017.

Our September Alden Bridge Village Association board meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at 7 p.m. at the Township building, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. Residents are encouraged to attend our meetings. Please watch our Facebook page and email newsletter for updates. Please bring us your questions, your praise and your problems! You can also send your concerns to info@aldenbridge.org.

The Savage family of Doeskin Place was awarded our July Yard of the Month award, and we awarded the last of these honors for 2017 on September 1. However, at the end of October we’ll have a competition for the highly coveted Spookiest House in the Village award (best Halloween decorations) and, before you know it, it will be time to look for Alden Bridge’s best Christmas holiday decorations.

Coming up next is the fall Flea Market, and volunteers are needed to pitch in for Alden Bridge at this semiannual event. This giant garage sale (really in a garage at the Pavilion!) gives Woodlands residents a chance to sell outgrown and

redundant treasures, since garage sales are prohibited by Township covenants. All Village Associations share in the profits if we meet our quota of volunteers, and our share goes directly to our scholarship fund. Please contact info@aldenbridge.org for additional information. We don’t have the date yet, but this is an early Saturday morning event, so you have all afternoon for your own pursuits — plus you get first look at all the goodies being offered for sale!

There’s a slim chance that we might have a couple of tickets left for the bus-to-the-ball-game outing on Saturday, September 16, 2017, so contact us at info@aldenbridge.org if you’re interested in joining us. Tickets are $26 each and that covers admission to Minute Maid Park and a round-trip bus ride from our Village center. What a deal! The Astros will be playing the Seattle Mariners that evening.

We continue to publish our monthly electronic newsletter of Village news. If you aren’t on the distribution list, please send your email address to info@aldenbridge.org so you can receive our latest news. We won’t share your email address; it will be used only to distribute news of Alden Bridge. You can also find us on Facebook and at our website, www.aldenbridge.org.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend and a September to remember!

Cochran’s Crossing

The Cochran’s Crossing Village Association focus has moved on from baseball to the annual Fall Festival. We are announcing the Festival in this issue of the community magazine, and there will be more details next month. Mark your calendars now. This free event, October 15, 2017, from 1 to 4 p.m., is for all who live in The Woodlands, not just those in Cochran’s Crossing.

Once again, the Fall Festival will be at Shadowbend Park on Lake Woodlands Drive near the intersection with Gosling. The format is similar to past years, but in 2017 it has been expanded. The event will include interactive games, prizes, drawings for some special items, bounce houses, pony rides, petting zoo, and food and bottled water from the Kroger’s located at the Cochran’s Crossing Shopping Center. Cochran’s Crossing will also be counting on the Rotary Interact Clubs from The Woodlands and College Park high schools to help staff those activities.

We previously announced that we are implementing opportunities for businesses to participate in our Digital Sponsorship program. This includes our website, newsletter and Facebook, as well as onsite recognition at events. Of course, one of those events is the Fall Festival, and you can have your business included. Beverly Fennessy, a member of our Village Association board, will be able to provide the details. Contact her at bfennessy1@hotmail.com.

The Village Association is continuing to provide opportunities for organizations with an impact on our community to bring their message to those impacted by their actions. For example, Bob Dailey with The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency presented an update on water quality and pointed out that water use in The Woodlands has dropped considerably. A water conservation effort is also being promoted through Terrilynn MacArthur

with the Township’s Environmental Services Department. Labeled the “WaterWise Challenge,” the objective will be to turn off automated sprinkler systems from October 15, 2017 to April 15, 2018.

Remember, each month at the village meetings there are opportunities for citizen participation as well as more in-depth discussion of topics with various community organizations. All village meetings are open, and the village board specifically sets aside a time for resident comments. Those meetings are the fourth Tuesday of every month (except December) at 7 p.m. in the Township meeting rooms. For additional information about the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association board, contact Gary Conwell at gconwell1@gmail.com, or call him at 281-387-6986.

Creekside Park

Greetings Creekside residents! September is here, and summer is winding down; however, there are still plenty of things to do in Creekside Park Village and The Woodlands.

The summer was full of great events held in our community. The Village Association board held its annual board appreciation dinner; thanks to The Refuge Steakhouse and Bourbon Bar for the hospitality and the great food. The event is a great way for your board to get to know each other on a more personal level, as well as discuss opportunities to make our community the best that it can be for the residents. The Refuge Steakhouse and Bourbon Bar has also committed to a new Creekside Park Village community event. A “Pub Run” has been established on Monday evenings; check in between 5 and 6:30 p.m. through December 18, 2017, for residents of all ages. Bring the kids and/or dog, strollers and bikes and get out and enjoy the outdoors and meet some new neighbors. There is no charge to join

the Pub Run so run on down and enjoy menu specials and raffles. Check out all the details at www.refugeinthewoodlands. com/pub-run

In July we celebrated the Fourth of July in style. The Woodlands Township offered several fireworks viewing locations, including one in Creekside Park Village. The fireworks were amazing and there were many residents who got out and biked or walked to the festivities held at Rob Fleming.

Safety is important at all times of the year; however on Sunday, October 8, 2017, between 3 and 5 p.m., The Woodlands will be celebrating National Night Out. This is a night to lock your doors, turn on your outside lights and celebrate the evening with your friends and neighbors to establish ownership of your neighborhood. Knowing your neighbors is not only fun, it is a great way to increase the safety of your neighborhood by knowing who belongs and who doesn’t. Start planning your event/party now. For timelines and contest ideas, please visit The Woodlands Township site at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/ nationalnightout

Look for events and Village meeting information on the Creekside Park Village Association Facebook page and on our website at www.creeksideparkvillage. com. Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 10, 2017, 1 to 4 p.m. to attend the rescheduled Creekside Park Village Association Annual Picnic and Pool Party at Wendtwoods Pool.

We look forward to seeing you at our next association meeting on the first Tuesday of the month unless otherwise communicated. Till next time!

A special shout-out to our own creative genius, Richard Stromatt, for his leadership and inspiration behind Indian Springs’ entry into the South County Fourth of July parade. Focusing on the

theme, “Let Freedom Ring,” Richard invited the talented Hand Bell Choir from Christ Church United Methodist to perform patriotic melodies. The choir was conducted by David Tumulty. In addition, volunteers distributed 2,000 copies of the Bill of Rights. The judges rewarded the effort with the Best Use of Theme award.

Panther Creek

Summer may finally be winding down, but the residents of Panther Creek are rewinding for an event-filled fall. Our annual outing to watch the red hot Astros will be held on September 22, 2017. Kimber Lewis has done a great job in getting tickets to all who acted early.

Does your car use infant seats for children or grandchildren? Be sure you are correctly securing those seats. On Saturday, September 9, 2017, certified technicians will check them for you for free between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at The Woodlands United Methodist Church parking lot.

Both Panther Creek Village and the entire Woodlands have been national leaders in holding National Night Out Neighborhood Parties. Join the fun, meet your neighbors and learn safety tips. This year, we have moved the event to a Sunday afternoon, October 8, 2017, from 3 to 5 p.m. so more families can attend. Check with your Neighborhood Watch contact person or check with The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3800. If a party is not scheduled in your area, you can host it. The Township will provide signs, invitations and other things to help your party be a success.

THE BASICS OF WATER-WISE LANDSCAPING

Water-wise gardening simply means using good common sense.

Water-wise landscaping reduces irrigation needs, lowers water bills, lowers maintenance and provides a much higher quality and worry-free landscape. Here are some general guidelines for establishing one:

PLANNING AND DESIGN

Take some time to look at your yard. You may even want to make a drawing of it. What would you like to change? Less lawn and more ornamental beds? More native plants?

APPROPRIATE PLANT SELECTION

Use native and adapted plants which do well in our area whenever you can. The Woodlands Township’s Environmental Services Department has produced a large number of brochures on plants.

Take advantage of this valuable service.

ANALYZE AND AMEND SOIL

Without good fertile soil, you cannot have an attractive, water-wise landscape. Texas A&M Soil Science Laboratory in College Station will test your soil for a small fee. You can also contact the local Texas Agrilife Extension Service in Conroe (936-539-7824) to find out how to do this, then follow the instructions on the subsequent report and amend your soil accordingly.

EFFICIENT IRRIGATION

Use the cycle and soak method to irrigate your landscape. If you have ornamental beds, install drip irrigation in them. It saves an amazing amount of water, creates little or no evaporation, and the water goes directly to the roots of the plants.

MULCH

Mulch keeps plant roots cool, prevents soil from crusting, minimizes evaporation and reduces weed growth. Apply two to four inches deep on ornamentals and trees.

PRACTICAL LAWN AREAS

Many homeowners realize that they don’t need large expanses of turf grass and are decreasing the sizes of their grassy lawns. Some have switched over to grasses with lower water needs (such as zoysia).

PROPER MAINTENANCE

Have your irrigation system checked by The Woodlands Water Irrigation System Evaluation team, a free service offered by The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency (WJPA). Register for a free inspection at www.wjpa.org

Parking On Public Streets In The Woodlands Neighborhoods

With continued growth in The Woodlands over the last several years, there has been a drastic increase in calls to The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch and law enforcement in relation to parking issues. The most common complaint received is that some residents do not utilize their private driveway to park their vehicles on a daily basis. In many of the neighborhoods, vehicles are parked on the street across from a neighbor’s driveway, in front of the cluster mailboxes, too close to an intersection or stop sign, parked facing the wrong direction (into traffic) and parked in a way that prohibits the safe movement of traffic. While some of these parking habits may not be illegal, they can contribute to an unsafe environment in the neighborhood.

Most streets in The Woodlands are wide enough to accommodate a vehicle or vehicles parking on one side of the street, however, the problem occurs when vehicles are parked on both sides of the street, which causes impeded sight lines and makes movement of vehicles slow and difficult. It also can inhibit the safe movement of fire apparatus, ambulances, law enforcement vehicles, school buses, U.S. Mail and utility vehicles. Additionally, it causes an unsafe environment for pedestrians to move freely around their neighborhood, especially small children.

Law enforcement strongly encourages residents to park in their

private driveway, even though in most cases it is not illegal to park on neighborhood streets. All violations of traffic laws will be strictly enforced by law enforcement, and if your vehicle is deemed to be a traffic hazard or violates traffic laws, it can be ticketed or moved at the owner’s expense.

Specific Texas Parking Laws

Texas parking laws are listed under the state’s Transportation Code Section 545.301. Law enforcement appreciates your attention to these state laws and just as importantly your consideration of a safe neighborhood. Here is a summary:

SECTION 545.302

a) An operator may not park a vehicle:

– On the roadway side of a vehicle stopped or parked at the edge or curb of a street.

– On a sidewalk.

– In an intersection.

– On a crosswalk.

– Between safety zone and the adjacent curb or within 30 feet on the curb opposite of the safety zone.

– Where an official sign or other Texas parking law prohibits parking.

b) An operator may not, except briefly to pick up or discharge a passenger, park an occupied or unoccupied vehicle:

– In front of a public or private driveway.

– Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.

– Within 20 feet of a crosswalk.

– Within 30 feet of a flashing signal, stop sign, yield sign, or trafficcontrol signal located at the side of the roadway.

– Where an official sign prohibits standing or other Texas parking law prohibits parking.

SECTION 545.303

Additional Parking Regulations

– A vehicle must be parked parallel to a curb and be parked within 18 inches of the curb.

SECTION 683.002

Abandoned Motor Vehicle : A motor vehicle is abandoned if the motor vehicle:

– Is inoperable, is more than five years old, and has been left unattended on public property more than 48 hours.

– Has remained illegally on public property for more than 48 hours.

– Has remained on private property without consent of the owner or person in charge of the property for more than 48 hours.

– Has been left unattended on the rightof-way of a designated county, state or federal highway more than 48 hours.

For Texas Parking Law Violations

– Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at 936-442-7797, choose option #3.

– Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 4, at 281-376-3472.

The Woodlands Covenants Parking

The Woodlands Township Covenants and Standards address boat, trailer and automobile parking and storage:

– Boats, trailers, trailer houses, recreational vehicles, truck campers, semi-truck tractors or mobile homes may not be parked 48 consecutive hours or more on any street or any lot, where visible at ground level from a street or adjacent property.

– Parking on lawns, ditches, open space areas or other dirt, gravel or grassy areas is not allowed.

For Covenant Parking Violations

– The Woodlands Township Covenant Administration Department at 281-210-3800.

laughing. Along with improving health, whenever teamwork is involved, there’s the added benefit of being connected to others. The sport of dragon boating is over 2,000 years old with its origins steeped in tradition. The pageantry, the

colors, the mechanics of dragon boating are educational and present a view into the past.

The YMCA makes it very easy to participate. The Y organizes and facilitates all team activities, provides all the equipment, rules and instructions as well as a team tent, water and ice and event T-shirt. The Y also provides professional staff, volunteers and safety/ security agencies to create a positive, safe and fun environment.

Rowing for a CAUSE. YMCA Dragon Boat is a charity event benefitting the Y’s Annual Campaign. Funds raised ensure the YMCA can continue to strengthen our community through the programs we offer and provide financial assistance to families in need.

FALL IS COMING

The Water-Wise Village Challenge

HAS ALREADY BEGUN!

Did you know that by being a water saver you could help your village receive a cash donation? The Water-Wise Village Challenge to save water starts with a pledge. The opportunity to make that pledge to turn off your automated sprinkler system began on August 15, 2017. Here’s how it works: Households that pledge to turn off the irrigation system for the winter, or to stop watering their turf grass during the cool months, earn at least one point for their village. Villages accumulate those points throughout the pledge period, and the three villages with the most points receive donations for their scholarship funds from The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N.

The time period to stop watering turf grass is mid-October through mid-April in our region. It allows the grass to go dormant and turn brown on top while the root system grows deeper and stronger. The result is a healthier yard in the spring!

For this fall, the stakes have been raised! The earlier you pledge, the more points you earn for your village!

AUGUST 15 TO OCTOBER 31, 2017 Pledging at this time earns triple points.

NOVEMBER 1 TO DECEMBER 31, 2017 Each pledge earns double points.

JANUARY 1 TO APRIL 15, 2018 Villages earn a single point for each pledge.

Start thinking now about the benefits of the challenge, and help increase the number of participants! The dual advantages are 1) water savings and 2) greater opportunities for scholarship fund donations for the most active villages.

DON’T FEEDTHE BEARS!

Join us Thursday, September 14, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. at McCullough Jr. High School, 3800 S. Panther Creek Drive, for Walk in the Woods Nature Lecture, Black Bears of East Texas: Return of a Texas Native with Dr. Christopher Comer, professor at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Bears capture the imagination, fascinating both children and adults. “Charismatic, mega fauna,” Dr. Comer fondly calls the species. Intelligent, shy and adaptable, black bears were once plentiful throughout the state. “When we look back at the cultural history of Texas, black bears figured prominently,” notes Dr. Comer. “They were the top of the food chain.” Vital to the native population and early settlers, bears provided a food source, hides and tallow. Like the buffalo, black bears succumbed to unregulated hunting and were eradicated from Texas by the 1940s.

Louisiana black bears are a subspecies of the American black bear. On March 11, 2016, the species was removed from the lists of threatened and endangered wildlife. Louisiana black bears are now wandering

more frequently into remote areas of East Texas. Each year, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department documents three to 10 credible sightings. Wildlife enthusiasts and hunters welcome the reports, while others greet the news with trepidation. “Some people see bears as dangerous and predatory,” Dr. Comer says. An omnivore, the black bear is 90 percent vegetarian, dining primarily on berries, nuts and honey; insects and animal carrion provide protein. “The bear is like a 200-pound raccoon—super intelligent in the animal realm—but not as dexterous.”

Dr. Comer will explore the wonder of black bears, their habits, range and challenges. Attendees will also be able to participate in hands-on activities.

A free program of The Woodlands Township, Walk in the Woods Nature Lecture Series receives support from The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N., Waste Management and Nature’s Way Resources. Talk about an oxymoron — our fast-paced lifestyle has led to a life of idling! When running errands, we hurry up and wait in the drive-through lanes at the bank, pharmacy, fast food restaurants or the carpool lane at school. While you are waiting, do your turn off your engine? If not, you are idling. Idling increases the amount of air pollutants coming from your vehicle’s

tailpipe. Prevent adding to air pollution simply by turning off your engine in settings where you will be idling. Being cognizant of your idling habit is especially critical when the air quality index ( https://airnow.gov) is in an unhealthy range (common from March through November).

Pollution Prevention Week, September 18-24, 2017, is all about

source reduction. This year, take this one simple action to improve air quality: stop idling! Reducing vehicle idling will cut pollution and save you money. Two minutes spent idling are equal to one mile of driving. Nearly four million gallons of fuel are wasted every day as a result of vehicles idling in the United States, according to www.sustainableamerica.org.
