Woodlands Township Fire Department reminds all residents that The Woodlands Covenants strictly prohibit the sale or use of fireworks and sparklers of any kind in The Woodlands neighborhoods and parks. The Woodlands is situated in a beautiful forest, and with dry weather conditions and so many trees, one errant spark could severely damage our hometown. Do not put your own property and safety, or that of your friends and neighbors, at risk. 23

Township to Conduct Resident Survey in July
TheWoodlands Township traditionally conducts a survey of The Woodlands residents approximately every two years. The purpose of this research is to obtain resident opinions on various issues related to living in The Woodlands, including Township services and issues of priority. The Township Resident Survey was scheduled to take place in 2020; however, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Woodlands Township expects to conduct the 2022 Residential Survey during the month of July utilizing Great Lakes Marketing Research (GLM). GLM will randomly select 7,500 households to receive a mail survey packet. The packet includes a cover letter with directions on how to return the survey by mail, take the survey online or call a live operator.
Results from the survey will be used as the Board plans for its 2023 budget. The survey does not contain any questions related to bank accounts or credit cards, and there are no phone calls initiated by the survey company to households. If you should receive a packet, the Township encourages you to share your opinions by responding promptly to GLM.
For additional questions about the survey, please contact The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3800 or online at www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.

Residents and visitors of The Woodlands Township gathered to remember and honor lives lost in service to the United States during a special Memorial Day event held at Town Green Park. Keynote Speaker Lt. Col. Dean A. Smith, Commander U.S. Air Force 341st Recruiting Squadron, and “Our Community Salutes” Chairwoman, Liza Garza, recognized high school graduates who have enlisted in different branches of the United States military. Together, they told the story of the Challenge Coin and issued a coin to all the new recruits as well as administered the oath of service of serving the United States. The event featured a moment of silence to remember and celebrate the lives of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom. These courageous men and women will forever be remembered for their bravery and valor, who gave their all so that we can enjoy our freedoms here at home.

Water Safety Tips for a Great Day on the Water
The Woodlands Township offers two prime locations for public boat rentals on Lake Woodlands. Riva Row Boat House, located on the waterway near Town Green Park and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, offers eight exciting watercraft options: single kayaks, single pedal kayaks, tandem (two-seater) kayaks, tandem pedal kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, elliptical paddle boards, water bikes and swan pedal boats. Lakes Edge Boat House, located in the Hughes Landing district, offers single kayaks, tandem kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and water bikes. Below are some tips to help you prepare for your time out on the water.
CHECK WEATHER CONDITIONS.
Proper planning for the weather can make, or break, any trip. If there is a good chance of thunderstorms or

lightning in the area, it is suggested that you reschedule your adventure. If extreme high temperatures are forecasted, it may be advisable to plan your trip for another day – especially if traveling with children, pets or the elderly.
DRESS APPROPRIATELY.
Kayaking is a water sport, so plan on getting wet when you go out on the water. Jeans are not recommended for boating because the fabric does not dry very fast. If sunny weather is forecasted, it is recommended that you bring a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.
WEAR A LIFEJACKET.
At Riva Row and Lakes Edge, it is mandatory that all guests wear lifejackets (personal flotation devices). We have several sizes available and will

help choose the best fit for you should you require assistance. Your lifejacket should fit snugly and should always be worn while on the water.
STAY HYDRATED.
Hydration is exceptionally important, particularly during Texas summers. While on the water, plan on drinking half to one liter of water per hour on a normal summer day. Riva Row and Lakes Edge have cold, healthy beverages available for purchase if you forget to bring your own.
KNOW YOUR ROUTE.
Be sure to plan a route before you head out. Estimate how far you want to go and how long it will take to go there. There is a map of Lake Woodlands on our website, and at each boat house dock, with estimated paddling times to help plan your trip.

The Woodlands Township Earns Beautify Texas Award for Recycling Program
The Woodlands Township has earned the prestigious 2022 Outstanding Public Education and Outreach Award by Keep Texas Beautiful for The Township’s Recycle Right program.
The Recycle Right program is led by Township Environmental Services with the goal of keeping the recycling stream clear of contaminants. The program, launched in 2020, has reduced contamination of curbside recyclables by
30 percent (24.5 percent in 2019 to 17.2 percent in 2021). Recycle Right provides simple, straightforward guidelines for residents of The Woodlands, clarifying what belongs in curbside recycle carts and, more importantly, what does not. A critical component of the Recycle Right program is the education tag placed on all residential curbside carts. Residents are encouraged to save the tag and refer to it when questioning whether an item
belongs in their cart. The golden rule: if it is not on the tag, it does not belong in the cart.
Keep Texas Beautiful is a 501(c)3 nonprofit with more than 50 years of experience deploying resources for local clean-up, recycling and youth engagement efforts. The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department was honored at the Keep Texas Beautiful Annual Conference in June.

Happy Fourth of July from Alden Bridge! Our July board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. All are welcome to attend, especially if you have a concern or would like to make a public comment. Feel free to send us an email at abvainfo@gmail.com.
Kudos to our May winners of the Yard of the Month Program: Jim and Jean Baker at 14 Millport Drive. The couple takes great care of their “centerpiece” front yard, providing not only color, but also edible plants, like Swiss chard!
The Alden Bridge Yard of the Month program continues through this summer. Please look around the village and send your nominations for the best front yard in Alden Bridge to abvainfo@gmail.com no later than Wednesday, July 20, 2022, and we’ll award on August 1, 2022. Nominate your neighbors (or yourself, it’s ok!). While you’re out walking, just make note of that neighbor’s address and they could be a winner.
Interested in more Alden Bridge news? We continue to publish our monthly electronic village newsletter. To join our subscriber list of more than
1,000 households, please send your email address to abvainfo@gmail.com. Your email address will never be shared and will be used only to share news of our village. In addition, you can always visit our Facebook page and our website, www.aldenbridge.org, for additional updates.
Stay cool, Alden Bridge!

Cochran’s Crossing
Cochran’s Crossing Village Association celebrated our teachers on Independence Day, dedicating our participation in the South County Fourth of July Parade to the many teachers who live and work in our community. Teachers were also invited to participate in the parade.
Many teachers continue to purchase classroom supplies from their own household budgets. To help alleviate those costs, the village association has kicked off an effort to help collect donations from residents for teachers who live or teach in Cochran’s Crossing. Donations will be added to the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association Education Fund and used to supplement the small grants already provided to teachers by the association. Please visit our website below for more information.
Our June pool party at Bear Branch Park was a huge success! Many thanks to all who helped us kick off the start of summer, including local businesses and talented local musicians.
Save the date for our annual Fall Festival at Shadowbend Park on October 23, 2022, from noon to 4 p.m. If you have a local business or organization and are interested in being a vendor and renting a table for the event, please reach out to Tricia Danto at triciadanto@gmail.com. All proceeds will benefit the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association Education Fund, which provides student scholarships and teacher grants.
All residents are invited to attend our village association board meetings, which occur on the fourth Tuesday of
each month at 7 p.m. at 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. The July and August meetings are scheduled for July 26, 2022, and August 23, 2022.

Indian Springs
Indian Springs Village Association is proud to once again support our outstanding public schools after a hiatus in 2021. The funds raised through village association events, such as Taste of the Village, Water-Wise Village Challenge, Pollinator Gardens and 3R Bazaar, are used for scholarships to our Indian Springs high school seniors and grants to our neighborhood schools.
This year, Indian Springs Village Association made three donations to the public elementary schools serving our community. A $500 donation was made to Glen Loch Elementary for the accelerated reading program. Based on several reports on these programs, students have exhibited improved vocabulary and increased reading comprehension on a variety of books. A $250 donation was made to Galatas Elementary School, which has entered its fourth year as a CISD Literacy Cohort Campus. Galatas Principal Denae Wilker writes, “Through community donations of gently used books, we have made great strides, but we are still in need of additional titles to fill in the gaps.” With the donation from Indian Springs, those gaps in their classroom libraries are greatly diminished. In addition, a $250 donation was made to Coulson Tough K-6 School.

Township Provides Fishing Line Recycling at Several Parks
Some of our younger residents have taken up the cause to protect our waterways and aquatic wildlife through a new recycling program. Thanks to the hard work of two local Eagle Scout candidates, 12 Township parks now have monofilament recycling stations (MRS) available for the public to use. Discarded monofilament line, or single-strand nylon fishing line, entangles birds, turtles and fish, causing injury or mortality that could easily be prevented when properly discarded.
Daniel Verachtert first approached The Woodlands Township with his proposed project to install an MRS at Northshore Park, Lake Paloma and Rob Fleming Park. Daniel’s project was well received and laid the groundwork for another Eagle Scout candidate, Colton Moore, to build and install eight additional MRS at parks throughout The Woodlands.
An MRS not only provides a place to safely dispose of unwanted fishing line, but the line is also collected, cleaned of hooks, weights and trash and then shipped out for recycling where is it melted down and made into other plastic products. Next time you’re casting a line at a local pond, collect your broken, tangled or unwanted line and drop it off for recycling at one of these 12 parks with a monofilament recycling station: Capstone, The Cove, Reedy Pond, Creekwood, Cypress Lake, Shadow Lake, Deepdale Pond, Mystic Lake, Alden Bridge, Northshore, Lake Paloma and Rob Fleming Park.
“I’ve always loved fishing, and I fish a lot at the ponds in The Woodlands,” said Colton Moore, pictured. “I really enjoyed carrying out an Eagle Scout project that aligned with my personal interests so well, and I’ve committed to collecting fishing line from the recycling stations for the next three years until I go to college.”
Did you know The Woodlands Township manages more than 40 ponds throughout its parks system?
Many are stocked with bass, catfish and more, making our area ponds and lakes a great place to fish this summer. Most bodies of water are catch and release, meaning you must remove the hook and toss your catch back into the water, except for Bear Branch Reservoir, Lake Paloma
By Amber Barnes
and Lake Woodlands, where you can keep the fish you catch. The Township Environmental Services Department offers year-round programs to educate residents on the health of our waterways and provide opportunities to get involved. Visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx. gov/environment for a list of programs including the storm water drain marking project, the pet waste project and the invasives task force program, all of which take action to protect our waterways.
A fishing license is required for all residents and non-residents to fish in public waters of Texas for almost everyone over the age of 17. Besides Bear Branch Reservoir, Lake Paloma and Lake Woodlands, all other small lakes and ponds are strictly catch and release, and in private waters which do NOT require a fishing license. The upper portion of The Woodlands Waterway and Lake Robbins are the only bodies of water in The Woodlands that DO NOT allow fishing.

Bicycle Safety is a Two-Way Street
By Susan Martin
As bicycling increases, safety is of primary importance. Whether you are a car driver or a bike rider, safety requires focus and attunement to traffic and other surroundings. By driving and riding defensively, you remain vigilant and improve your ability to prevent potential accidents. www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/neighborhoodwatch
There are two main types of crashes while biking: the most common are falls, and the most serious are with cars. Regardless of the reason for the crash, prevention is the name of the game. There are things you can do as a rider or a driver to decrease the risk of a crash. Rule one for avoiding a serious head injury is to wear a properly fitting bicycle helmet. Some additional tips for motorists and cyclists are included below.
RIDERS
Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as automobile drivers. A bicycle is a vehicle, and the cyclist is a driver. When you ride in the street, you are required to obey all traffic signs, signals and lane markings and yield to pedestrians as a car would yield.
• Ride predictably so motorists can get a sense of your intentions and react accordingly.
• Drive with the flow and in the same direction as traffic.
• Ride single file when traveling in a group.
• Always make eye contact with drivers before crossing into their line of travel.
• Obey street signs, signals and road markings, just like a car.
• Look ahead for falling hazards such as toys, pebbles, potholes, grates, etc.
• Put away electronics that may distract you and take your eyes, ears or mind off the road and traffic. Headphones can limit your ability to hear an oncoming vehicle.
• Use hand signals to communicate your intentions. Look over your shoulder before changing lane position or turning.
• Do not ride between vehicles. Watch for parked cars and doors opening.
• Cross only at intersections.
• If a bicycle lane is not present, ride as close to the right side of the road as possible.
• Plan to be seen! Wear light-colored or reflective clothing, especially at night. A light on the front and a red reflector or light on the back of your bike is required by state law when riding at night.
• Alert pedestrians verbally that you are approaching.
DRIVERS
As a driver, plan to share the road with bicyclists. Increased speeds on roads and the increase in driver distractions have led to an increase in cyclist injuries and deaths. Remember to:
• Yield to bicyclists as you would for other motorists, and do not underestimate their speed to avoid turning into a cyclist traveling toward you.
• Remember, bicycles are vehicles and cyclists are allowed to take the entire lane when necessary.
• Scan for bicyclists and give them the appropriate right of way.
• Drivers turning right on red should look to the right and behind to avoid hitting a bicyclist approaching from the right rear. Stop completely and look left-right-left and behind before turning right on red.
• Obey the speed limit, reduce speed for road conditions and drive defensively to avoid a crash with a cyclist.
• Give bicyclists room. Do not pass too closely. Pass bicyclists as you would any other vehicle—when it’s safe to move over into an adjacent lane.
• If you’re passing a cyclist, move to another lane if possible and give them plenty of room.
• Watch for cyclists who may need to maneuver around potholes and debris.
• Children and novice riders can be unpredictable, so expect the unexpected.
• When passing a bicyclist, pass as you would a slow-moving car. Do not tailgate. Wait until traffic conditions allow you to safely pass.
• Allow at least three feet of distance when passing. Do not use your horn in the near vicinity of the cyclist.
20 THE WOODLANDS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE JULY 2022
The use of hand signals lets others know when you’re turning, changing lanes or stopping. Signaling your intentions gives drivers notice of your movements and time to react. Look over your shoulder and up ahead (scan), then signal your turn and make your move.
Register Your Bicycle Via Township Neighborhood Watch
Bicycle registration is a free service offered by The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch. Almost half of all stolen bicycles are eventually recovered by law enforcement, but only a small portion of these bicycles are ever returned to the owners because of a lack of identification such as registration.
Simply scan the QR code below and enter your contact information, make, model and serial number, and any other characteristics unique to your bicycle. All bicycles have a unique serial number which is usually engraved at the bottom of the frame. The serial number can also be found beneath the handlebars or on the frame next to the rear wheel.
By Susan Martin
The serial numbers of your family’s bicycles are an important piece of information to have in your home files. It is recommended to also include receipts, photographs and other unique information about your bikes in your home file. In case of theft, the documentation in this file will be invaluable in filing a report with law enforcement. Additionally, this information also serves as sufficient proof of ownership should your bicycle be recovered.
Once the bicycle registration is processed, you will receive a copy of your original report and a decal with a unique number associated with this information. The decal should be placed on the frame of the bicycle in a visible location. If your bicycle is recovered, The Woodlands Township will be able to retrieve this information to share with
law enforcement, increasing the chances of returning it to you.
Your information will remain in the system until you notify the Township that your bicycle has been discarded or sold. If you sell or dispose of your bicycles in any way, please update your report via the QR code. When adding a supplement to the registration, you will need to re-enter the personal information.
If your bicycle is stolen, it is important to report it to law enforcement right away.
• Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office: 936-442-7797 (option 3)
• Harris County Constable’s Office Precinct 4: 281-376-3472

A Summer Checklist to MosquitoProof Your Patio
Simple Tips to Enjoy the Outdoors
By Megan McNairn
Take a minute this weekend to check off these five easy steps and make your patio mosquito-free this summer.
Toss the plant saucers.
Saucers provide the perfect dark, wet environment for mosquitoes to lay eggs, barely visible to the naked eye. Instead, opt for plant stands, pot trivets or pot feet that elevate the container and do a better job of not staining your deck.
Clean the gutters.
It doesn’t take many leaves to retain enough water to breed mosquitoes even without clogging the gutter entirely. Take a quick peek and scoop out any debris. If your downspout ends in a rain barrel, ensure the screens are in good shape to repel mosquitoes or keep reading for a simple preventative treatment.
Pull out the floor fan.
Overhead fans are nice, but they don’t combat mosquitoes. Use physics to your advantage and set up a big oscillating fan to blow a breeze across your favorite lounger. That gentle breeze is around 10 mph, much more than a mosquito’s top speed of 2 mph.
Use good bacteria.
Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water – so whether it’s a bird bath, rain barrel or a French drain, the most effective tool to treat water is with
microscopic bacteria known as Bti. Mosquito larvae eat the Bti and it binds to specific receptors in their gut and kills them. Bti is harmless to fish, frogs, birds, pets and people and approved by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI), the organization that certifies products for use in organic production.
Guard the perimeter.
Containing 99 percent garlic, Garlic Barrier is used in agriculture to keep insects off crops as an alternative to chemical pesticides. Follow the dilution directions and apply with a pump sprayer to plants and structures around the perimeter of your yard. It lasts about a month but needs to be reapplied after rain. This can be a great tool to use ahead of a pool party or family barbeque – after you’ve tossed anything holding water.
Still having a problem with mosquitoes? The Woodlands Township Mosquito Surveillance Team is here to help! Please call 281-210-3800 or email enviro@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov to request a free site assessment. Better yet, host a gathering with your neighbors and we’ll help you fight the bite together.

Tips to Prevent Heat Exhaustion
Source: https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/heattips.html
Schedule Outdoor Activities Carefully
Try to limit your outdoor activity to when it’s coolest, like morning and evening hours. Rest often in shady areas so that your body has a chance to recover.
Pace Yourself
Cut down on exercise during the heat. If you’re not accustomed to working or exercising in a hot environment, start slowly and pick up the pace gradually. If exertion in the heat makes your heart pound and leaves you gasping for breath, STOP all activity. Get into a cool area or into the shade, and rest, especially if you become lightheaded, confused, weak, or faint.
Wear Sunscreen
Sunburn affects your body’s ability to cool down and can make you dehydrated. If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes prior to going out. Continue to reapply it according to
the package directions. TIP: Look for sunscreens that say broad spectrum or UVA/UVB protection. These products work best.
Stay Hydrated by Drinking Plenty of Fluids
Drink more fluids, regardless of how active you are. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Stay away from very sugary or alcoholic drinks—these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.
Warning: If your doctor limits the amount you drink or has you on water pills, ask how much you should drink while the weather is hot.
Replace Salt and Minerals
Heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from the body that need to be replaced. A sports drink can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. If you are on a low-salt diet, have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other chronic conditions, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage or taking salt tablets.
Keep Your Pets Hydrated
Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets, and the water in a shady area.

Best Practices for All Times
• Remove all valuables from your vehicle, including documents with personal information and firearms. Burglars have ways of seeing through tinted windows and detecting electronic signals from within your vehicle.
• Ensure your windows and doors are securely closed; lock your vehicle.
• Activate your vehicle alarm and/or security system.
• Park in well-lighted areas and check your surroundings.
• If you must leave valuables inside your vehicle, do not leave any items in plain view.
• It is best not to leave a gun in a vehicle at any time, but if you must do so temporarily, use a gunlock, and store the gun in a secure location.
Help Prevent Burglary of Motor Vehicles
By Holly Steinke
Did you know that you could prevent crime by taking away the opportunity for a crime to occur? Burglary of Motor Vehicles is a common crime, but one that you can help to prevent by taking some simple steps each time you drive and while parked at home.
• Report suspicious activity to law enforcement when it is happening.
9-1-1 – for an emergency
936-442-7797, option 3 –Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, non-emergency
281-376-3472 – Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 4, non-emergency
Best Practices at Home
• Park in your locked garage, if possible.
• If you park in the driveway, install motion sensor lighting in that area.
• Remove your garage door opener if parked in the driveway.
• Secure your key fob to keep it from accidentally unlocking or starting your car.
• If you have exterior security cameras, aim them where you can see vehicles in your driveway.
• Avoid parking on the street to have your vehicle in a more secure location and allow emergency vehicles, buses and other large vehicles to pass safely.
Best Practices While Out
• Hide valuables and packages in your trunk before you park or reach your next destination.
• Avoid parking in remote areas.
• If you observe suspicious activity, notify law enforcement or security personnel at the business.
• Ensure that no one is following you, especially when leaving from a bank, store or gun range.
To help prevent catalytic converter thefts, park in well-lighted areas and/or in your garage. Please report suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately. Do not approach your vehicle if you witness something suspicious.
