Cochran’s Crossing

The Cochran’s Crossing Village Association meets at the Township Town Hall, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd., the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Participation by residents of Cochran’s Crossing is encouraged. The Cochran’s Crossing Village Association welcomes questions, concerns and ideas on ways to improve our community. The village association board is looking for additional ways to communicate with residents. Among the events that will be mentioned with more details in the August issue of this magazine will be the Cochran’s Crossing fall festival in October. One of the best ways to keep up to date and also find some helpful links is through your internet connection. An easy first step is to check out the village homepage at www.cochranscrossing.com. If you are on the Cochran’s Crossing Village Association Facebook page, scroll down and click on

village connection. Right now there are 143 who “like” Cochran’s Crossing Village Association on Facebook.

Concerns expressed by residents at the April meeting included encouraging dog owners to keep pathways clean. Excessive barking was also mentioned and the only solution to that problem was to make sure the dog owner was aware of the problem, and if it is extremely disruptive to have the county handle it as a nuisance issue. Guest speaker for the April meeting was Buck Driggers, The Woodlands Development Company’s vice president for residential sales. He reported on the positive statistics of The Woodlands and commented that development was beginning on the final area available for new homes.

Water Conservation

Everyone needs to be mindful of using water wisely. Grogan’s Mill Village Association officers frequently observe sprinkler systems running during the heat of the day, water running in the streets and sprinklers running during or after a good rain. The Woodlands is facing many serious issues regarding increased demand for water. Water conservation (and lower monthly water bills!) begins with each of us.

Yard of the Month

Mac and Judy Bennett, on Box Oak Place, are the June winners of Grogan’s Mill Village Association’s Yard of the Month. Mac and Judy have lived in The Woodlands for 15 years, with 14 of those years in this house.

Please contact us with your nominations for outstanding yards in Grogan’s Mill. Through October, the selected winner will receive the coveted Grogan’s Mill “Yard of the Month” sign to display plus a $50 gift certificate to a store of their choice in the Grogan’s

On the same Web site, you can also subscribe to a weekly Farmer’s Market e-blast newsletter.

Congratulations to Scholarship Winners

The Grogan’s Mill Village Association (GMVA) is extremely pleased to announce the recipients of the 2012 GMVA Scholarship. Originally, the GMVA was to award one $1,000 scholarship, but due to the high quality of the applications received, the board unanimously voted to award a second $1,000 scholarship.

All applicants were evaluated based on financial need, community involvement and citizenship, extracurricular activities and accomplishments, as well as letters

of recommendation. Miss Katarina Jones and Miss Ashley Sparks, both residents of Grogan’s Mill and seniors at The Woodlands College Park High School, met and exceeded all criteria.

Congratulations to these hard working and very deserving young ladies!

Panther Creek

This year is the 50th anniversary of Major League Baseball in Houston. The first game was on April 10, 1962, when Houston’s Colt .45s, later to be called the Astros, played the Chicago Cubs. The game was in Colt Stadium, a temporary outdoor stadium built next to where the Astrodome was being built. Can you imagine watching or playing baseball in the humidity and heat of Houston? When the Astrodome was finished, the team played in the first indoor air conditioned stadium in the country. The Astrodome was said by promoters to be the eighth Wonder of the World. For fans and players, playing in air-conditioned comfort was truly a wonder.

Even before the Colt .45s or the Astros, Houston had the Houston Buffaloes. The Houston Buffaloes, or Buffs, was an American minor league baseball team founded in 1888. The team played in the Texas League in 1888-90, 1892, 1895-99 and 1907-1958 (excluding 1943-45 when the league suspended operations during World War II); in the South Texas League in the years 1903-06; and in the American Association from 1959-61. The Buffaloes was a farm team of the St. Louis Cardinals and provided many great ballplayers to the Cardinals’ success in the 1930s and 1940s.

Baseball is a Houston tradition since 1888, so take advantage of the annual Panther Creek Village Associations baseball outing on August 11 when the continued on page 21

Saving Energy This Summer

• Install a programmable thermostat to set the air conditioning at a higher temperature when you’re out of the house or during late night hours. I have found very affordable ones online or simply call your air conditioning service company to get a recommendation for one that is best for your unit(s).

• Keep curtains and blinds closed in bedrooms during daylight hours to prevent your air conditioning unit from working harder than it needs to.

• Operate home appliances (washer and dryers, dishwasher, etc.) during offpeak (non-daylight) hours, if possible.

I have learned following the above simple tips have saved me hundreds of dollars every summer season!

KEEP COOl IN THE SHADE WITH

In northern climes, gardeners and plant enthusiasts are accustomed to referring to the cold hardiness map based on average minimum temperature when selecting the best plants for their region. On the Gulf Coast, the reliable guide to plant performance is provided by the heat zone map developed by the American Horticultural Society to reflect the number of days warmer than 86 degrees.

In East Texas, nothing challenges a landscape like the searing heat, humidity and seasonal drought of summer. Many plants that relish hot days have difficulty handling our nighttime temperatures and unpredictable rainfall that varies from sparse to heavy. Pigeonberry (Rivina humilis), an uncommon native ground cover,

24 THE WOODLANDS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE JULY 2012
www.woodlandswellness.com

is the exception. A perennial charmer for partial to dappled shade, pigeonberry is one tough Texas plant!

A good choice under trees, on a shady slope or sprawling over a border, pigeonberry visually cools summer with bright green, wavy-edged leaves that turn burgundy-red in fall. Growing from 12 to 18 inches with a casual, mounding habit, pigeonberry also makes a good choice for a hanging basket or patio container.

From March through October, delicate pink and white flower spikes produce translucent red berries at the same time as the blooms. Butterflies and beneficial insects visit the flowers, while birds quickly consume the berries as soon as they ripen. Poisonous to humans, berries and leaves are distasteful to small mammals. Several sources suggest that pigeonberry is deer resistant as well.

Find pigeonberry at plant sales and nurseries specializing in natives, or propagate from seed. When selecting a location in the landscape, moist soil is preferred, but a well-drained site is a must! Pigeonberry is water thrifty. Even during summer drought, only occasional irrigation is needed to prevent the ground cover from going dormant. Add carefree pigeonberry to your wish list for planting when temperatures cool!

A well-mannered ground cover, pigeonberry adds charm to a woodland or shady setting with wavy-edged leaves, delicate blooms and red berries. The delightful native combines well with Turk’s cap, chile pequin, American beautyberry, coralberry or tropical sage.

For more information, visit the American Horticultural Society’s Web page at www.ahs.org/publications/heat_zone_ map.htm. To request a free Plant Focus brochure featuring more ground covers for woodland landscapes, contact The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3800.

Weeklystreet spraying to control mosquitoes, as was the custom for many years, is not effective in The Woodlands because heavy vegetation and privacy fences keep the pesticide hanging in the street instead of drifting into backyards where most mosquitoes are.

For spraying to be effective, wind speeds have to be just right. Too high and the pesticide dissipates too quickly to effectively kill mosquitoes; too low and the pesticide sits in the street and chases mosquitoes into backyards. In fact, surveillance in The Woodlands demonstrates in most cases the number of mosquitoes in backyards increases the night after street spraying.

Just like overuse of antibiotics creates resistant bacteria, overuse of pesticide creates resistant mosquitoes. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services

what happened to

WEEKLY STREET S PRAYING

(TDSHS) and the Texas Mosquito Control Association (TMCA), “The safest most effective mosquito control targets mosquitoes before they fly! The reduction, elimination or treatment of mosquito breeding areas is the best and most cost effective technique for mosquito control.”

For these reasons, The Woodlands/ Precinct 3 Mosquito Abatement program, the joint mosquito abatement program provided by The Woodlands Township and Montgomery County Precinct 3 for the areas of Township within Precinct 3, has adopted Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM). This protocol, recommended by the TDSHS, TMCA and the Center for Diseases Control (CDC), involves a step-by-step approach that employs:

1. Surveillance by sampling –trapping and testing for disease

2. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites

3. Biological control

4. Chemical treatment when disease is present

5. Public education about personal protective measures How can you enjoy the outdoors?

1. Work with your neighbors to eliminate breeding sites in your neighborhood.

2. Avoid being outside between dusk and dawn when disease-carrying mosquitoes are active.

3. Wear long, loose, light-colored clothing.

4. Use repellent. Considering exposure time, choose the least toxic product that works for you, apply as labeled and remove as directed. CDC has tested and endorsed several non-Deet products as effective, including products with active ingredients picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

5. An oscillating fan can be very effective at keeping mosquitoes away.

Neighborhood and community groups can request a presentation on how to work together to dramatically reduce mosquitoes; and residents can schedule trapping and surveillance by calling The Woodlands Township at 281-210-3800.

IN THE WOODLANDS

Frost Bake Shoppe

Terese Yates and her husband moved to The Woodlands five years ago with their children. With three active boys, the miles of hike and bike trails immediately attracted them to our area. “Our boys are very involved in sports. They play baseball, football and basketball. There are so many wonderful sports programs in the area and we are so happy we settled here,” says Terese. After living here for a few years, Terese decided it was time to fulfill a dream that she had for quite some time. Terese loves to bake and always wanted to have a bakery. She decided that cupcakes would be a great way to start and began baking for all her friends. Once

she perfected her recipes, she rented space and as they say…the rest is history! All you have to do is walk into the shoppe in Indian Springs or the one on the Waterway to see how much love goes into her baking. The delicious smells conjure up wonderful memories of kitchens filled with love! “We feel so blessed to be part of such a tight-knit community that cares about each other, and we hope that our cupcakes, cakes, cookies and other treats add to all your special occasions,” says Terese.

The Woodlands Strykers

Baseball fans no longer have to drive to Minute Maid Park to watch quality baseball. The Strykers, a minor league collegiate team, is now in our own backyard. The inaugural season began on June 1 as owner Ramiro Lozano threw out the first pitch.

Lozano purchased the Texas Collegiate League baseball franchise in The Woodlands in January. The league is seven years old, features seven teams and allows collegiate players, including top local prospects, to play over the summer to attract major league scouts. More than 150 league players have been drafted by Major League Baseball, including Hunter Pence, Clay Buckholz and Brandon Belt. “It’s exciting for the community and for the local players. They can come home during the summer to play ball,” Lozano said.

The team will play home games at Stryker Stadium located at The Woodlands Christian Academy. “When we were looking for a home field, I immediately thought of The Woodlands Christian Academy. My older son graduated from TWCA, and my younger son will be a senior this year. I was thrilled to be able to give back to the school by making premium enhancements to a field that was already well maintained. Since we play in the summer and the school uses it in the spring, it was the perfect scenario,” says Lozano.

Lozano believes that playing baseball aids in teaching our sons to become productive and successful men in whatever endeavor they choose after baseball. Visit www.woodlandsstrykers.com.

Excess lawn watering is known to contribute to this problem. Take charge of your irrigation controller and remove the automatic setting. All residents should water only as needed. Despite The Woodlands MUDs lifting irrigation restrictions and the amount of spring rains, be mindful of the amount of water being used. Apply irrigation water sparingly to promote deep root growth for droughtresistant plants and grasses. Please continue to help. For more information, please visit www.wjpa.org.
